Latest news and product round-up Dogs unleashed and cats miaow-ving up the charts

T

he Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) has released its 2019 pet population data, confirming a 400,000 rise in the dog population, which now stands at 9 million with 26% of households now own a dog. From the research, it is clear that a rise in dog ownership among families is the key driver. The number of households with children owning a dog has grown by 11% to 2.3 million, 230,000 more than last year. However, dogs are not the only pets to have moved up the charts. The cat population is at its highest for five years at 8 million. 18% of households own a cat, which equates to 140,000 more cats and 75,000 more households.

Key Findings: • 13 million households (45% of UK households) have a pet • 600,000 more households have a pet this year • 5 million households own a cat (75,000 more than last year) • 6.6 million households own a dog (300,000 more than last year) • 4.4 million (53%) households with children own a pet • 28% of UK households with children now own a dog, compared to 24% last year • 2.3 million families have a child and a dog compared to 2 million last year Michael Bellingham PFMA Chief Executive adds: “I was not surprised to read about the growth of the dog population among households with children as personally I have recently joined this movement. Tessa, a Schnoodle, is very much part of our family and I am delighted that 11% more families in the UK are benefitting from dog ownership. so much joy to children. With the demands of modern life and the pull of digital companions, we are so pleased that more children will benefits from the social, emotional and physical benefits of pet interaction.” “Dogs Trust Veterinary Director, Paula Boyden, said: “We have long known that dogs are man’s best friend and it is positive to see an increase in the number of households with children also sharing their lives with dogs. Owning a dog can have so many benefits for families and our hugely successful Be Dog Smart campaign is packed full of advice and information to ensure this harmonious relationship continues.” This year our Top Ten Pets is published as part of a detailed ‘Pet Data Report’, which includes regional data, pets per household, first pets, pet

nutrition research, UK market data and much more. The report can be viewed online: www.pfma.org.uk/statistics.

PFMA’s top ten pets for 2019 are: 9 million dogs 8 million cats 900,000 rabbits 500,000 indoor birds 500,000 domestic fowl 400,000 Guinea pigs 300,000 hamsters 300,000 tortoises and turtles 200,000 lizards 200,000 snakes There are 3 million indoor fish tanks, proving that fish are a very popular pet.

Latest news and product round-up Ninety per cent of small firms still not prepared for new data regulation, new research shows

• Hospitality and arts & entertainment businesses are the least prepared for GDPR • FSB campaign to help 5.7 million small businesses be data ready starts today Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) research, shows that over a third (33%) of small businesses have not yet started preparing for the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) while a further third (35%) are only in the early stages of preparations. Only eight per cent of small businesses have completed their preparations. In light of the findings, FSB is launching a GDPR awareness raising campaign, dubbed ‘BeDataReady’ in the run up to the 25 May deadline. A sector breakdown shows that hospitality and arts & entertainment firms are the least prepared. Over half of respondents in these industries have not yet started preparing for the changes. Small businesses in the financial services sector are the most prepared with 82 per cent of respondents having started or completed their GDPR preparations. 6 | Total Boarding Magazine

Mike Cherry, FSB National Chairman, said:“FSB is in a unique position to reach small businesses and so we’re going to step up efforts to help and support them get data ready, while continuing to make sure the Government implements the regulation in the fairest way for small firms. “The GDPR is the biggest shake-up in data protection to date and many small businesses will be concerned that the changes will be too much to handle. It’s clear that a large part of the small business community is still unaware of the steps that they need to take to comply and may be left playing catchup.” The FSB campaign is being welcomed by UK Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham, who said:“Research suggests the SME sector is less prepared than others for the changes. We know that many small businesses are keen to get it right, but with so much misinformation out there it’s difficult for them to know what’s right and what’s not. It is therefore very welcome that FSB is running this campaign.”

Vampire economy soars

M

ore and more consumers are shopping online late into the night, according to ecommerce delivery expert ParcelHero, which predicts this year will see the first 24-hour home deliveries, as retailers seek to make a killing in the late night ‘vampire economy’. One in three Brits admit to shopping late at night a lot more than they did five years ago; and many businesses are now working 24 hours a day. Yet retailers and delivery companies have been slow to respond to the fast-growing demand for night-time deliveries. “Night-time online browsing and purchasing has been dubbed by retail analysts the ‘vampire economy’. Our new study – A Monster Opportunity: Delivering the Vampire Economy – reveals why 2019 will be the year vampire economy deliveries finally take flight. “The new witching hour is not midnight, but 10.18pm. That’s the peak time for nocturnal purchases according to Barclaycard. But 10pm is also the time Amazon Prime Now, Argos and Tesco Now deliveries pack up for the night. Clearly there’s a gap between what consumers want, and what delivery options are now actually available.

Latest news and product round-up Charity launches stray cat campaign

PIF connects members to huge savings on exclusive telecom deals

T T

he UK’s first major study to track and help stray cats living on the streets has been started by charity Cats Protection. The Cat Watch scheme will combine a ‘cat census’ to track numbers of homeless moggies in selected cities with one of the UK’s biggest neutering drives to control numbers of stray cats. The project, which has so far been launched in Nottingham, Everton, Bradford and Luton, is being supported by more than 20 wide-ranging groups and organisations, including probation services and a leading veterinary college. Cats Protection’s head of neutering, Jane Clements, said: “There has never been a project of this scale dedicated to finding out more and helping stray cats. We know that across the UK, there are scores of homeless cats – both in rural and urban locations – but information about them is limited. Although cats are very adaptable, life as a stray street cat is incredibly tough, and we want to do all we can to help improve their lives. Large numbers of

8 | Total Boarding Magazine

unowned, unneutered cats can also be a nuisance to communities’’ Since its pilot launch last March, the project has so far: • Developed a free mobile phone app to enable cat lovers to quickly and easily report stray cats in their community • Worked with Everton in the Community’s Neighbourhood Team to track and help cats living around its Goodison Park stadium • Formed partnerships with probation services in Bradford and Nottingham to enable offenders serving Community Payback sentences to build cat shelters to keep strays safe and warm • Worked with the Liverpool Vet School to help meet the demand for neutering of stray cats • Formed partnerships with scores of community organisations, housing associations and local authorities to help communities deal with stray cat populations. • Received reports of more than 2,000 stray cats in three city wards alone.

he Pet Industry Federation (PIF), the UK’s largest trade association for the pet industry, is delighted to announce an exclusive new broadband and telephone package for PIF members from its telecoms partner, PIF Telecom. The new telecoms product is called ‘Business Complete’ and includes a whole host of features: • Telephone and broadband rental • A new business line number as well as your existing number • Unlimited calls within the UK including mobile • Top of the market cordless telephone including voicemail, mobile app and auto attendant. Do you own or work in Dog Kennels, Boarding Cattery, Dog Day Care or Dog Boarding? The new Animal Activities Licensing (AAL) regulations came into effect on 1 October 2018. With this brings a number of changes, including the requirement to have clear evidence of knowledge and experience or a minimum of an OFQUAL regulated level 2 qualification in a relevant subject.

T

he new regulations will replace a number of different pieces of animal establishment regulations, namely: Boarding Establishments Act 1963, Pet Animals Act 1951, Riding Establishments Act 1968, Dog Breeding Act 1991, Performing Animals Act 1925. From that date any businesses in England commercially trading live animals or boarding cats or dogs either during the day or overnight will need a licence issued under the new regulations, although existing licences issued under the Pet Animals Act 1951 or the Boarding Establishments Act 1963 will remain valid until they expire. The new regulations take effect on renewal or if your business is being brought into the scope of licensing for the first time. Activities such as Commercial Dog Boarding Kennels, Commercial Cat Boarding - Catteries, Commercial Home Boarding, Commercial Dog Daycare, Commercial Dog Breeding are covered by the new legislation. Under the new regulations, staff working for Dog Kennels, Boarding Catteries, Dog Day Care or Dog Boarding must have clear evidence of knowledge and experience or a minimum of an OFQUAL regulated level 2 qualification in a relevant subject. Or, to meet the newly introduced ‘’Higher Standard’’, a member of staff with a relevant OFQUAL regulated Level 3 qualification must be present

Should Kennels + Catteries use titre testing results as “proof of vaccination for boarding? In the second of a two part article, Vicki J Adams,BSc DVM MSc PhD MRCVS, summarises a presentation given at the 3rd ALiKC Conference 26 November 2018. What is titreing? To titre means to measure the levels of antibody to a specific pathogenic microorgansim/antigen

What exactly is an antibody titer? It is a measurement of the concentration of antibodies in the blood and is determined by a test involving repeatedly diluting a blood sample and exposing those dilutions to an antigen. The last dilution of the individual’s serum that produces the positive endpoint is used to determine the titre (and this will differ depending upon the type of assay used). The more one can dilute the serum and reach the appropriate endpoint reaction, the more antibody there is in the sample. There are two major questions that need to be considered by anyone considering using titre testing: What is the indication for using the test? And How should the test result be interpreted? Unfortunately, for all forms of antibody testing, it remains confusing and even controversial whether the results are a good measure of in vivo immunity. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, several associations backed the view that there was evidence to show that immunity from core vaccines in cats and dogs should last longer than one year (Table 2). The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVAMA), American Animal Hospital 12 | Total Boarding Magazine

Association (AAHA) and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) all published guidelines on vaccination suggesting that core vaccines have a duration of immunity of three years. The guidelines recommended vaccinating every three years and, at this time, many practices began measuring titres in an attempt to provide evidence to themselves that vaccinations were lasting longer than one year. One of the motivations for the guidelines was concern about the potential adverse effects of vaccines. How often titres should be tested is also open to debate as some veterinary surgeons recommend testing yearly whilst others every three years and still others every five to seven years. Challenge tests have shown that a successful primary course of vaccination against CPV and CAV-2 provides most dogs at least seven years of immunity and against CDV provides

immunity for at least five to seven years. These duration of immunity studies were conducted on over 1,000 dogs and they showed minimum duration of immunity based on challenge (exposure to the real virus) and serology (antibody titre) as they were limited by the duration of the studies rather than the duration of immunity. It is possible that some vaccines will provide lifelong immunity. It should be noted that CDV, CPV, CAV-2 and FPV core vaccines are modified-live virus vaccines that provide longer-term immunity than killed virus vaccines do.

Most would not argue that every kitten and puppy should receive a primary course of core vaccinations and also that, when protection is in doubt, antibody testing can assure us whether or not a cat or dog is actually protected by the vaccine(s) administered. Therefore, antibody testing can be a very useful tool for every small animal practitioner as this is the only practical method to be certain an animal has developed an immune response to a given core vaccine. To get an accurate test, one must wait at least 14 days after vaccination before testing. Having advocated about the usefulness of antibody testing, when we measure antibody, it is only part of the equation. Every animal will also respond to a vaccine with a cell-mediated immune response that is difficult to measure outside a research laboratory setting.

Table 2. Core feline and canine vaccine preventable diseases that can be used in titre testing.

So, To titre or not to titre … Is it more about ££ … and less about the science?

results as “proof ” of vaccination for boarding? Unfortunately, with regard to the core vaccines, it is often a matter of opinion rather than science and we are still left with what to do about vaccination against kennel cough and leptospirosis in dogs and cat flu (see box). In the end, it seems to be up to the interpretation of the model license conditions by the local authority/ inspector. Please accept my sincere apologies for the lack of a conclusive answer to this nagging question. Further reading: http://www.chippingnortonvets.co.uk/ uploads/Dog%20vaccination%20and%20 antibody%20titre%20testing.pdf http://www.petmd.com/blogs/ fullyvetted/2010/june/titering_or_ vaccines-10182 http://skeptvet.com/Blog/2014/12/ antibody-titer-testing-as-a-guide-forvaccination-in-dogs-and-cats/ Dr Vicki Adams MRCVS is a Veterinary Epidemiology Consultant, Editor of the Veterinary Record Open and Acting Chief Executive, Animal Cancer Trust. Vicki has recently joined the committee of ALiKC as Veterinary Advisor. For further information on ALIKC membership, benefits and details of the conference please visit: www.alikc.org.uk

Actually, it’s all about the interpretation of test results: if the antibody titre is low, then a vaccine booster is usually recommended but when there is a moderate to high antibody titre, then antibody levels are not likely to increase with a booster vaccination.

The final word … h percentage of animals.” Can or should catteries and kennels follow the World Small Animal Veterinary Association Guidelines, that take into account extended duration of immunity studies, and use titre testing

Why are cats always different? According to a report from the AAFP’s Feline Vaccination Advisory Panel, most cats that have a positive result on an antibody titre test for FPV/FPLV have highly effective immunity to the disease. However, titres for FHV and FCV may not necessarily be associated with protective immunity and should not be used to predict protection in the future. The FHC and FCV vaccines do not induce sterilising immunity; instead they have the effect of minimising the clinical signs of disease. In addition, titres for feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are not associated with immunity.

That Looks Familiar

Copyrights, patents and trademarks, oh my! Dean Hart MCFBA, AABCP shares his valuable advice on protecting your intellectual property.

S

o, you have your business up and running. Clients are contacting you and you are starting to make some money – fantastic! You have worked hard to get your web site up and running it looks great because you have been creative and introduced some fab downloadable documents for your clients to use and promoted your services by adding amazing photographs, descriptive and motivational text, Yes, it is all coming together because of your hard work, commitment and time taken. But just a moment, you have found one of your documents, or it is very similar, on one of your competitor’s web site and isn’t that one of your photographs? Your competitor has copied and slightly modified your work to use for their own business, surely that is not allowed? No, it’s not. But Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights are not as straight forward as they may seem. Any written work or photographs you produce for you and your business whether self-employed, or you own the business have automatic copyright protection, this is because ‘you created it’ and it is ‘your property’. Don’t expect the same if you have produced work when you are employed by somebody else, technically the Copyright belongs to your employers. Stealing or imitating somebody’s work is known as infringement, you have probably heard the phrase ‘Infringement of Copyright’. Every individual has automatic Intellectual Property Rights, in other words with some of your work you do not need to register them as Copyright. This applies to anything you write, literary works, art, your photographs, any films, TV, your music, your web content, and sound recordings. Automatic Copyright

16 | Total Boarding Magazine

also applies to the shape of anything you produce known as ‘Design Rights’. However, be aware that some Intellectual Property that you have produced is not covered by Copyright automatically, so it is sensible and good business practice to apply to protect your work and creations. For example, your product or trading name, any jingle you have produced, or your logo needs to be Trade Marked to protect you from others using or copying them. As with everything there is a cost and time involved, currently £170 for each online application (£200 if applying by post) and you need to wait for around 4 months for confirmation just in case there are any objections to your application.

Apply direct to Gov.Uk, avoid those advertising to apply for you, as costs will escalate! If you have produced the design for a product packaging, such as the colour or pattern then you can protect this by applying to Register your Design. If you have invented or produced something like a new lead or piece of dog grooming equipment, then you can apply for a Patent. Remember to take care if you need to discuss your ideas with anybody else even your bank manager. Don’t be emotional in who you think you can trust and who you can’t! Your ideas are special to you and need to be kept confidential, trust nobody. This may sound harsh, but all is not fair in ‘love and war’ and for some - business

is ‘war’. So, to help keep your ideas confidential and safe, always produce a ‘Non- Disclosure Agreement’ before you discuss your ideas with anybody – even your family! They may be surprised and impressed with how business savvy you are. Back to your website and your documents. Some people seem to believe that just because information is on the World Wide Web, it is in the public domain and can be freely used by all. This is not true; your creations are generally protected in any media they are produced. So, just what can you do to help protect your work in the first instance? Apart from applying for Trade Marks as mentioned above, always mark your web site pages with the international Copyright symbol ©, put your name or your business name and the date your work is produced with it. For example, this article could have © Dean Stuart Hart 2019, inserted at the bottom of the text. Although technically this should not be required in the UK, your website is ‘out there’ and visible to the world. The international symbol helps to inform people that your content is protected by Copyright Law and legally people must ask your permission if they want to ‘do’ anything with the contents. Having this symbol clearly displayed may also help your case should you need to pursue any copyright infringement of your work. In addition to this, you could

18 | Total Boarding Magazine

also mark each of your photographs with the same, this makes it far more difficult for people to cut and paste or download your photography to use elsewhere. You can also write a short statement on your web site that sets out what people can and can’t do with the material on your site. This is known as a Copyright Notice. An example of this may be ‘This website and its content is copyright of [business name] - © [business name] [year]. All rights reserved. Any redistribution

or reproduction of part or all of the contents in any form is prohibited’ As the copyright owner, only you have the authority to copy, issue copies, rent or lend, perform, show, play, communicate or adapt your work. So, an infringement of your copyright would be any of these actions carried out by somebody that does not have your permission. However, they could argue that their actions involved something known as ‘fair dealing’, but to do this they would have to prove their actions were for ‘personal research or study’, or for ‘criticism and review’ or for ‘reporting current events’ but even with this they would not have permission to use your photographs. Find all the information you need on Copyright Law, Trade Marks, Intellectual Property and how to apply online by visiting www.Gov.uk and entering Copyright Law in the search box. Copyright Law works both ways, so make sure that you are not infringing anybody else’s work too! Some weeks we are busy manufacturing enormous 30 pen catteries ready to be delivered and installed in Scotland, other days we will be putting together a bespoke garden run for a cat lover a couple of miles away. Whatever we are doing, we are doing it with the love, care and attention to detail that people have come to know and expect from a Lindee Lu building.

Whether you foster, breed or have been thinking about running a little business from home with a boarding cattery, we are here to help you make your dreams a reality. Why not give us a call for a chat? We don’t hard sell, we don’t insist you buy a minimum number of pens and it doesn’t matter how large or small your project is. Can’t All Small Mammals Eat the Same Food? Small animals, such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters are an important proportion of the pet population, but not all small mammals have the same nutritional needs. The PFMA explain

T

he pet food industry tends to refer to this group collectively as ‘small furries’ but this term encompasses a broad range of species also including ferrets, degus, gerbils, rats and mice. As a result, when speaking to pet owners, it can be tempting to group all these pets together, however, it’s very important to clarify that each pet type is different and they have their own distinctive nutritional and behavioural needs. So, in short, no, not all small mammals eat the same food. In the wild small mammals live in different climates and naturally eat different foods. In fact, food suitable for one species can be totally unsuitable for another. They also have different nutritional needs with some of them only feeding on plants and others relying on animal proteins in their diet. As a result, it is important for pet owners to get reliable nutritional advice, specific to their pet type. Vets, specialist pet food retailers, manufacturers and small animal nutritionists are best placed to provide tips on what to feed your pets.

Herbivores Herbivores such as rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas are animals that only eat grass and plant-based food. All herbivorous small mammals need plenty of good quality fresh hay and/ or grass on a daily basis. In fact this is an essential part of their diet to keep their digestive system and teeth healthy. Check our Hay Poster for more

information and as a handy reminder of the importance of hay. www.pfma.org. uk/the-importance-of-hay-poster Alongside their daily portion of good quality hay, which as a general rule should be a serving around the same size as their body, they should also be fed a portion of species-specific pet food. When fed alongside hay and/ or grass, a product designed for their species will ensure they are getting all of the vitamins and minerals they need. A small handful of suitable fresh herbs or leafy green vegetables can also be given occasionally to provide variety in their diet and behavioural enrichment.

Carnivores Carnivores are animals that eat mainly or exclusively animal-based food. Ferrets, for example, are obligate carnivores which means they 20 | Total Boarding Magazine

Omnivores Those animals that eat a variety of food sources including both plantbased and animal-based foods are called omnivores. Examples of omnivorous small pets are hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. In their natural habitat they eat grass, seeds, grains and insects. Although they are often mistaken as herbivores, they are omnivores and need a variety of plant and animal-based nutrients in their diet to stay healthy. Complete pet foods, specifically designed to help keep omnivores healthy, are available.

How important is water? Drinking water is incredibly important and a constant supply of clean fresh water should always be available to your pet. Specially designed bottles with metal spouts are a good option but some animals prefer to drink from a heavy bowl. So why not try offering your pet both and see which they prefer. Any water pillage should be cleared up so that your pet’s bedding stays clean and dry.

Fresh Drinking Water Should Always be Available THERE IS A PET OUT THERE FOR YOU! With the right care, small pets make great companions for children and adults alike. Encourage owners to do their research to see what different pets need and which pet type suits them and their lifestyle. PFMA’s Pet Care page is a great place to start: www.pfma.org.uk/pet-care

About Apprenticeships On the job training is considered by many employers to be the ideal introduction to the animal care industry. The UK government is encouraging businesses to take on youngsters and is offering funding as an incentive. We take a snapshot at how the scheme works.

A

pprentices are aged 16 or over and combine working with studying to gain skills and knowledge in a specific job. Apprentices can be new or current employees. You can get government funding to cover some of the cost of training and assessing an apprentice if you’re in England. You must pay the apprentice at least the minimum wage. Your apprentice must: • work with experienced staff • learn job-specific skills • study during their working week (for example, at a college or training organisation)

How long it lasts Apprenticeships must last for at least a year. They can last up to 5 years depending on the level the apprentice is studying.

Hiring your apprentice

Get funding

There are several steps to taking on an apprentice. 1. Choose an apprenticeships framework or standard for an apprenticeship in your industry and at a suitable level. 2. Find an organisation that offers training for the apprenticeship framework or standard you’ve chosen. 3. Check what funding is available. 4. Advertise your apprenticeship - your training organisation will do this for you through the find an apprenticeship service. 5. Select your apprentice and make an apprenticeship agreement and commitment statement with them. You can use an apprenticeship training agency if you want to employ an apprentice without the responsibility for running the apprenticeship scheme.

You can get help from the government to pay for apprenticeship training. The amount you get depends on whether you pay the apprenticeship levy or not. You pay the levy if you’re an employer with a pay bill over £3 million each year.

24 | Total Boarding Magazine

If you don’t need to pay the levy You pay 10% towards the cost of training and assessing your apprentice. You need to: • Agree a payment schedule with the training organisation • Pay them directly for the training The government will pay the rest (90%) up to the funding band maximum. They’ll pay it directly to the training organisation. You could be eligible for extra funding depending on both your and

your apprentice’s circumstances.

If you pay the levy You’ll receive funds to spend on training and assessing your apprentices. The government will add 10%. How you get your funds and pay for training depends on whether you’re in: • England • Scotland • Wales • Northern Ireland
