A warm welcome from Powerful Thinking Chris Johnson, chair of Powerful Thinking, explains why the industry think-tank is proud to be working with Stand Out on the inaugural Stand Out Power Guide – to highlight innovation in the supply chain, explore trends and insights with contributors to the guide and share best practice in energy management at events For those new to Powerful Thinking, our story started in 2009, when a group of event managers, temporary power providers and interested parties, such as the BBC and universities, gathered to discuss the future of energy in the sector. At this point in time there was the diesel generator, a few trailblazing innovators using solar on a small-scale at alternative festivals, and little else.

Such was the appetite to work together toward more sustainable approaches, that Powerful Thinking was created to provide a cross-industry forum that brings together event organisers, supply chain and industry bodies on the topic.

We need to think radically; we need legislation to change and to promote investment in new technology. Power to the people Dave Noble, managing director of Midas, reveals how European Union Stage V emissions regulations will transform the temporary power model Introduced in January this year, European Union Stage V emissions regulations will transform the temporary power model – starting with London and other big cities first, then across the country. And it’s Brexit-proof.

A telling step on from Stage 3A, in technical parlance the new standard establishes limits for engines of non-road mobile machinery’s “gaseous and particulate pollutants”. It affects products marketed from January 1 but provides for a “transition” period, in which equipment with engines manufactured in 2018, so not Stage V-approved, may be sold.

Know your stuff Hope Solutions and ZAP Concepts have produced a new action research report on diesel use across the UK events industry. Here, Luke Howell, founder and director of Hope Solutions, reveals all For the last two years, Hope Solutions and ZAP Concepts have been analysing data on diesel use at live events and festivals across the UK. Hundreds of events and partner organisations shared information that allowed us to build up a picture of the scale of diesel use across the whole UK events industry. Furthermore, in June 2019, we released our diesel use factsheet as an easy to digest snapshot of the current state of play.

The study and factsheet are the first of their kind to explore the level of diesel use and emissions from power generation across the wider industry, with data from sectors including music festivals, sporting events, country fairs, food festivals, fixed venues, showgrounds and concerts.

Based on our findings we have been able to calculate that our industry uses more than 380 million litres of diesel annually, creating a whopping carbon footprint of 1.2 million tonne. Shockingly, the study showed that event sites in green spaces have worse air quality than some inner-city areas, indicating a huge hidden contributor to the growing public health epidemic from air pollution…

Less is more One of the key ways an event can cut fuel consumption costs and emissions is to reduce the amount of power required in the first place, so says Chris Johnson, chair of Powerful Thinking As we inevitably transition over the next few years toward more use of new technologies, such as battery storage and renewables, there will likely be a necessity for energy demand to decrease to match lower output systems. With the rapid shift toward LED and lowenergy equipment generally, in areas such as lighting, appliances, sound systems etc., it means market developments are moving in a compatible direction.

There are various ways of reducing energy demand. Some may seem obvious, but it’s surprising how common it is for event and festival organisers not to pay attention to measures that can typically save up to 40 per cent on fuel costs.

The big issue Low emission fuels are important, but they should not detract from the real issue of reducing fuel consumption, so says Tim Benson, founder of Smart Power Over the last 10 years, the industry press has been rife with reports on the merits of alternative fuels, in particular the reductions they afford in CO2e emissions (CO2, NOx and PMs). In the early noughties, we saw a rise in the use of F.A.M.E fuels, most notably B100 biodiesel. However, concerns over reliability soon saw B100 supplanted with HVO products (hydro-treated vegetable oils).

These so called “drop in” fuels can run in all engines, including common rail units. Quick to capitalise on this stepchange, new HVO products began appearing, such as Green D+, which includes traces of cerium oxide to improve engine performance. Aquafuel then developed a glycerine product that claimed the lowest CO2e emissions rates of all biofuels, which it introduced to Formula E...
