ccording to a new survey by the National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA), 96 per cent of organisers are suffering from staff shortages. It’s an issue that NOEA says will plague the events industry in 2022.

It’s a concern, as next year is a big year for our industry. The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are just two examples of large events taking place.

This is on top of all the other amazing events and festivals that are to make a return, some of which have been absent for two years.

So, what are your plans for making sure that you have enough resource to staff your projects over the next 12 months? For instance, have you increased wages or introduced incentives?

Or have you considered talking to events professionals, new Mums that want to return to work, about how you can support their needs? In this issue, we have had an incredibly open and honest chat with Chrissie Gilbert, a freelance event manager, who returned to festival sites this summer. With her six-month-old daughter Marlow in tow. Chrissie is breastfeeding Marlow.

So, what measures did organisers put in place to assist Chrissie? Turn to page 15 and you can hear from LS Events, Massive and Method about their experiences of supporting a new Mum, returning to work and what they had to do support “the best person for the job”.

Chrissie has worked in the live events industry for 17 years. Her career began at university as a stage manager at her Student Union, before moving on to become an assistant technical manager at the O2 Academy in Sheffield. Whilst there, she used her annual leave to work on festivals, gaining enough experience to move on. Despite stints with LS Events and Newcastle Arena, Chrissie is now freelancing, working in ELT/ event control rooms and site managing festivals. She currently works across festivals, tours, and special temporary projects in both a site management and event management capacity. Hannah Bows is an associate professor in criminal law at Durham Law School and deputy director of the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA). She is associate editor of the British Journal of Social Work. Over the last ten years, she has conducted research on domestic violence, sexual violence, and homicide. Her current projects include a study on sexual violence at music festivals and an examination of police and prosecution decision making in crimes involving older victims. Bolesworth Events cancels Liverpool International Horse Show Bolesworth Events, organiser of the Voltaire Design Liverpool International Horse Show, has cancelled the event. It was due to take place at the M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool from December 31, 2021, to January 3, 2022.

With the ever-changing COVID-19 environment and with the recent announcements made by the Government and The Liverpool Health Protection Board, the organiser stated that the risk associated with responsibly staging an indoor event of this kind after Christmas was “just too high”.

Nina Barbour, founder of the Liverpool International Horse Show and Bolesworth Events, said: “We are naturally devastated to be making this decision and can only

hope that our loyal supporters understand our genuine reasons for being forced to cancel this year’s event. The reality of the situation is that we have to measure the risks of moving forward with an indoor event in early January, with the facts and concerns that we currently face whilst having to carefully negotiate the ongoing uncertainty relating to this pandemic.

“We feel that the only responsible thing to do is to make this decision now, and it goes without saying that we remain fully committed to supporting equestrian sport moving forwards and we will be throwing our energy into making all the exciting events that we have planned for 2022 truly the best experiences that we can for everyone involved.”

Music Venues Trust: 23 per cent drop in attendance since Plan B announcements According to new figures by Music Venues Trust, a catastrophic drop in attendance, advance ticket sales and spend per head has hit Grassroots Music Venues since the Government announced the implementation of the Plan B restrictions (December 8, 2021), placing the entire sector back on red alert for the risk of permanent closures.

Losses across the sector in this first week of this new phase of the COVID crisis hit nearly £2 million, with 86 per cent of Grassroots Music Venues reporting negative impacts and 61 per cent having to cancel at least one event in the week of December 6-13. The biggest causes of cancellations were performer/member

of the touring party testing positive for COVID-19 (35.6 per cent), private hire bookings cancelled by the organiser (31.3 per cent) and poor sales performance (23.6 per cent).

A survey of the sector conducted in the last 24 hours shows attendance at shows dropped by 23 per cent, with more than 140,000 “no shows” from ticketholders resulting in a 27 per cent decline in gross income. Future income from ticket sales also declined by 27 per cent, as gig goers’ confidence was shattered by a series of Government announcements on the Omicron variant.

Music Venue Trust has called for a stabilisation fund to protect the sector.

Staff shortages to “plague” events in 2022 Ninety-six per cent of event organisers are suffering from staff shortages, according to a survey by the National Outdoor Events Association (NOEA), on behalf of the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). The report also found that, of this number, 51 per cent said they struggled to find staff, with a further 38 per cent reporting that trained staff was the primary issue.

This survey was undertaken by NOEA following requests from Government departments to understand the nature of difficulty the industry is currently experiencing when it comes to staffing. As well as struggling with existing shortages, 83 per cent of respondents also predict that the issues will plague the whole of 2022.

These shortages will also have a fundamental impact on the productivity of the industry. The survey showed that 72 per cent of respondents have had to turn away

business. This is worrying news for the industry with 2022 a big year for events, including the Queen’s Jubilee and the Commonwealth Games.

“We’re pleased to be submitting this report to Government and hope that it provides them with the intelligence they need to support our industry,” said Tom Clements, president of NOEA. “Talent has been a massive part of our association’s focus from the outset of this pandemic and the report underlines why we have been so concerned.”

On a more positive note, the report also showed that 58 per cent of those surveyed are seeing talent returning to their businesses. However, this will be at a higher cost. Increases in wages will be a factor of concern for organisers, with more than 53 per cent reporting that staff costs had gone up by ten per cent with the remainder experiencing higher increases.

Human Race, organiser of the Therme Manchester Marathon and Manchester Half, has reported that the sporting events added £7.4 million to the local economy when they returned to the city this autumn.

The Opening Ceremony of Paris 2024 will take place outside of an athletics stadium. The organising committee of the Games has confirmed that the ceremony will take place on the Seine.

This year’s AJ Bell Tour of Britain and Women’s Tour cycle races delivered a net economic impact of more than £34 million for the UK economy.

North Star Famous landmarks in the North East of England received a touch of Durham Lumiere magic, as the light festival extended its reach beyond Durham city centre for the first time

urham Lumiere transformed Durham and historical landmarks across the North East of England when it returned to the city (November 18-21).

The light festival has been illuminating historical buildings and landmarks since 2009; this year, the event attracted six major new light installations, which dazzled the city and the surrounding countryside and coast. It was the first time that the festival has extended its reach across County Durham as well as the city centre.

visitors to the city since its inception. Despite event costs rising by 46 per cent – due to changes necessitated by COVID-19 and issues relating to Brexit – the festival remained free to attend, with more than 150,000 people registering to attend the festival over four days.

The six large installations – A Telling of Light, Solitude, Hymn to the Big Wheel, Castle of Light, Apollo 50, and With/Against – were lit up on November 21, alongside 31 other artworks across Durham city centre.

Unusual Rigging, IPS and QED provided kit and services to the light festival, which comprised eight riggers, 13 projectionists, 28 crew, 11 cabins, six welfare units, 1,382 pieces

of fencing, 11,000 litres of eco-diesel, 10,000 metres of cabling, 200 metres of cable ramp, 280 radios, and 400 volunteers.

Helen Marriage, CEO of Artichoke and artistic director of Durham Lumiere, said: “The numbers alone show the incredible scale and reach of this festival.

There is really nothing else like it. From the hundreds of local participants and volunteers to the artists, technicians, riggers, projectionists, security, and crew, Lumiere is a massive operation. We have gone through so much uncertainty in the last 18 months, I can’t tell you how delighted we are to have been able to produce Lumiere in Durham once again.”

Breast is best Is it possible to work on an event site and breastfeed your baby at the same time? Chrissie Gilbert, a live events freelancer, shares her experiences of working with LS Events, Method and Massive this summer, whilst breastfeeding her baby girl

L

abour MP Stella Creasy’s recent appearance in the House of Commons with her three-month-old son in a sling, sparked a huge debate as to whether it is appropriate to take young children to work.

The MP for Walthamstow faced a backlash for complaining about being censured by Parliamentary authorities for taking part in a Commons debate whilst holding Pip, her baby boy. Pip, who is breastfed, has regularly attended the Commons, as has Creasy’s daughter, Hettie, when she was a baby.

The MP’s experience has raised questions about how businesses and organisations can support breastfeeding mothers who want to return to work. Furthermore, Creasy’s comments have received huge media attention, with many people commenting on the lack of family-friendly measures and facilities for new parents, a need for better parental rights, and whether babies should be allowed in workplaces.

RETURN TO WORK

This summer, the events industry faced huge resource issues; staff challenges are not expected to disappear in 2022. So, is there anything that the events industry can do to support flexible working and experienced events professionals that want to return to work after they have had a child, and in particular, breastfeeding mums?

Chrissie Gilbert has worked in the live events industry for 17 years. In February, Gilbert gave birth prematurely to Marlow, a baby girl, who is combination fed [meaning she takes breast milk, expressed breast milk (EBM) in a bottle and formula from a bottle].

But has breastfeeding stopped Gilbert from returning to festival sites? In a word, no.

Since August, Gilbert has been facilitated

by LS Events, Method, LFX Events, and Massive, which have worked with Gilbert to support her return to work on festival sites.

Gilbert explained: “My daughter Marlow was born in February. She was seven weeks early. Marlow had a short stay in the newborn intensive care unit and then we both spent a month in hospital together. She was born before she had the suck, swallow, breath reflex needed for breastfeeding so needed to be NG (nasogastric) tube fed for 24 days whilst I recovered, and she learned how to breastfeed! There was a lot of emphasis put on the importance of breastfeeding Marlow, as she was premature, so it became something I was keen to do to help her.”

Gilbert knew she wanted to return to work.

Equally, she knew she would have to express [pump] milk whilst on an event site. She continued: “Pumping/expressing breast milk isn’t as easy as turning on a tap. You must be in the right head space, milk production is all linked to hormones, feeling happy and safe.

In hospital I was advised to find a nice warm, comfy space, have photos of my baby and videos to watch whilst I pumped.”

REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS

Gilbert is an experienced events professional, with a background in touring and site/event management. This year, however, all Gilbert’s roles saw her taking positions within event control rooms as event controller/manager; roles which fitted her needs perfectly as a new mum. So, how did organisers and production companies

“This is the first time we’ve had the opportunity to support a mum on site in this way,” commented Steve Reynolds, operations director at LS Events. “We have great people working for us and it’s important that whether they are working for us on a permanent, fixed-term or freelancer contract they are comfortable to have families. We want to ensure we retain the amazing people in this industry so it’s important we make reasonable adjustments to support our team.”

BREASTFEEDING MARLOW AT TRAMLINES

BREAST MILK STORAGE Gilbert worked for LS Events on All Points East (APE) and Mighty Hoopla. The live event management specialist talked to Gilbert about her specific needs and provided Gilbert with an accommodation buy out so that Gilbert could bring her mum and Marlow to London, provided site passes for her mum and Marlow so that Marlow could have her mid-day feed, supplied a fridge for storing expressed milk, provided a clean space for washing up breast pump equipment, provided a comfortable chair for feeding Marlow when she came to site and gave Gilbert access to a private space to put breast pumps in.

Gilbert explained further: “My main requests for working on site this year have always been to have access to a fridge and facilities to wash my breast pump.

“Because Marlow is combi-fed, I can be away from Marlow at length, but what that means is I need to express for comfort and to keep my milk supply in for when I return home. On site, I would aim to express roughly every four hours whilst I was separated from her.

“I chose to invest in a set of Elvie Breast Pumps, which were central to my ability to return to work with minimal changes. These pumps slot into your bra and are almost silent. I’ve expressed during ELT meetings, egress and even an aftershow! But not all pumps are like this. The pumps I chose to use for work meant I only needed a space to pop them in and take them out.”

HASSLE-FREE

Gilbert talked to all her clients before going on site and made a few requests; maximum 14-hour days, accommodation buyouts, site passes for her mum and Marlow, a comfortable space to feed Marlow in, support in ensuring she got fed regularly [breastfeeding burns a lot of calories], and plenty of drinking water.

John Tasker, a partner at Massive, the mass participation specialist, also worked with Gilbert this summer on the Great North Run. He said: “We’ve provided breast feeding facilities at lots of events, but Chrissie was our first breastfeeding mum working in our on-site team. Looking at the age profile of the people in the teams we work with, it’s something we’re expecting to see a bit more of.

The experience just reinforced what we suspected – it was a simple, hassle-free way to support one of the team and selfishly meant we could keep working with the best person for the job.”

Massive had to make few changes to Gilbert’s working arrangements. Some flexibility was required to start times on “non-live” days. Tasker continued: “We wanted to work with Chrissie and to make that possible we had to make it work for her. It wasn’t a big deal. We don’t have any issue with supporting people to perform any other natural bodily functions at work, so I don’t see that breastfeeding should be any different.”

Gilbert concurred: “Most normal bodily functions are supported – eating, drinking, and going to the toilet – expressing breast milk shouldn’t be a big deal, nor should you be embarrassed or feel guilty for the accommodations you might need to make this happen!”

ASK QUESTIONS

James Dutton, director of Method, employed Gilbert to work on a series of shows at The Drumsheds. He said: “This is the first time we’ve had a breastfeeding mum as part of our core delivery team. We had not considered that breastfeeding could be a barrier to work in our industry for new mums, but we have learnt it’s not difficult to offer the facilities and support required to make it happen. It’s been a new area of staff accessibility and welfare that we are keen to learn from.

“Chrissie is a real asset to our event management team. It’s her skillset and experience that make her so great for the role. We didn’t want the fact that she’s breastfeeding to hold her back.”

All Points East was Gilbert’s first event after giving birth. LS Events supported her by carrying out a risk assessment and minimising manual tasks, ensured catering and water were delivered to her in event control, minimised shift length, and minimised time on her feet. But what advice would Reynolds give to other event and festival organisers, or production companies, that are looking to support breastfeeding mums?

He said: “Talk to them. They know their situation best and everyone will be unique. If you talk regularly and make them feel comfortable then any issues get ironed out.”

Tasker agreed: “I think it’s like anything else when it comes to supporting the people you work with when their situations change – ask the questions, have the conversation, and be prepared to adapt or make small changes to how things work or have always been done.

That way you ensure people can still do the jobs they love to do and still be brilliant at doing them.”

GREAT SUPPORT

According to Gilbert, breastfeeding Marlow and returning to work on site was much harder than she ever expected.

She commented: “It’s possibly one of the hardest things I’ve done this year and I’ve had a pretty challenging 2021!

“I think the biggest thing is how little people know about breastfeeding. I thought I knew what to expect but there was so much I didn’t know. I’d had a lot of support when Marlow first arrived and felt confident around breastfeeding and all the potential complications, but to be on the

safe side I engaged a lactation consultant for some support before returning to work.

“When I go too long between pumping, my whole body lets me know. I get pins and needles down my entire back, and if I’ve really gone too long, I end up feeling sick. One day, I went too long but the medical team at APE were great. I sent my partner [Ash Whitehead], who also worked on APE, to ask for some ice packs. As soon as he turned up and asked for them, they sent him away with enough for that day and the next! Walking around with two ice packs shoved down my top wasn’t the most successful look I’ve had but I know more now. I am confident in the teams around me, supporting me, as it means I can do the work I want to do.”

LISTEN AND LEARN

At APE, Gilbert’s mum brought Marlow in for a mid-afternoon feed. This was scheduled to work around the regular ELT meetings and the event director was aware of the time frame, so if Gilbert was busy in ELT, the event director would be present. It meant that Gilbert could step out and feed Marlow. By communicating, Gilbert was able to balance both roles, her role as a new mum and her role as a freelancer.

“We only took our daughter on site if I needed to be on site, and feeding was desirable or preferable, and we tried to keep it to a minimum. My mum is used to the rules of site after having come to jobs with me over the years. She did her homework, did a site induction, was shown where she could and couldn’t go and wore a hi-vis, so did Marlow. We tried to limit her time on site as much as possible. At the end of the day, a festival site is a construction site, and is not designed for children.”

So, how should organisers manage specific childcare requests? “Having a safe space where children and their care givers can access would be ideal,” commented Gilbert. “If there were more children on site with somewhere to go would, I’m sure, mean more new parents stayed in work.”

According to Dutton, organisers should listen, learn, and do anything possible to ensure that breastfeeding mums are able to undertake roles at events. Tasker agreed and concluded: “Would we do it again?

BBC COUNTRYFILE CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK

Country Christmas Tim Etchells, managing director of SME London, talks all things BBC Countryfile Christmas in the Park

F

or four years, BBC Countryfile Live, the four-day outdoor event, has been wowing fans of the hit BBC television programme with its own blend of outdoor activities, countryside education, and interactive content. Its absence from the summer events calendar in 2020 and 2021 was noted. The event – delivered by SME London – had big plans. Since 2020, it has been waiting to relocate from Blenheim Palace to Great Windsor Park, but COVID has twice applied the brakes on the largescale event’s big move.

Until that day comes, Tim Etchells, managing director of SME London, has chosen to concentrate his efforts on delivering BBC Countryfile Christmas in the Park, a smaller, festive affair at Charlton Park, Malmesbury, home to WOMAD and the Earl of Suffolk. It’s an idea that he had around nine months ago when he realised that a summer show was out of the question.

“We couldn’t do the summer show,” Etchells explained. “It’s so big that it is very difficult to scale down and if we did then people would have only compared it to previous years.

“The BBC loved the idea of a festive event and they trusted us with the brand. They immediately got our ideas and the talent got it too – they said count us in.”

WALK IN THE PARK

Etchells and SME London looked at several grand locations to host BBC Countryfile Christmas in the Park, including Bowood House, Wiltshire. Initially, the estate said that it would host the event but changed its mind. The Earl of Suffolk stepped in and “kindly agreed” for Etchells and his team to use Charlton Park for a family-friendly festive event from December 10-12.

Etchells contracted Rupert Bassadone, founder of Event Site Design and Ops People, to support SME with site design, the exhibitor manual, operations, site management, licensing, and some elements of production and exhibitor management. Bassadone, who is also head of operations at WOMAD, understands the site more than anyone. However, at just seven acres, compared to WOMAD’s 350, BBC Countryfile Christmas in the Park was a walk in the park. In fact, the site is so small, and to preserve the estate, the decision was made to walk everywhere and have access to only one buggy.

Mark out began on December 2 and Bassadone delivered the site alongside Rosie Lamb, freelance senior operations manager, and a site crew of six.

“It’s the way to go. When you’re running events, you must be lean and mean. You can also change your team about; not that I am not happy with who we have working with us.”

Etchells outsourced trader sales to Noelle Walsh. He continued: “We had to pick when we ran the event very carefully.

Our traders were already confirmed to attend other festive events such as Country Living and Spirit of Christmas, which is why BBC Countryfile Christmas in the Park is so late in the calendar. Also, some traders couldn’t commit to the event until they knew how much stock they had left so we had traders book at the last minute.”

The shopping village was just one of the elements that comprised the three-day event.

It also featured woodland walks, a Christmas stage with six live shows each day, a Christmas kitchen, sponsored by NEFF and Bosch, the Merry Baking Tent, a Deck the Halls Christmas crafts demo area, Carol-oke, and a food market and wine bar.

Almost 14,000 people trekked to Charlton Park in Wiltshire to check out the event. But whether it returns to Charlton Park has yet to be decided.

“I do have plans to continue with BBC Countryfile Christmas in the Park but whether we bring it back here, I don’t know.

There is potential to move it to another site and perhaps closer to London, and maybe have it slightly earlier in the year.

“BBC Countryfile Live won’t be back until 2023,” Etchells confirmed. “You need £2 million in sales and sponsorship to underwrite the event and the big marketing budgets are still struggling. I might be being cautious, but I don’t want to put on a poor relation to what we created or do what I call an apology show.”

COVID ROULETTE

According to Etchells, organising Christmas in the Park has been one of the most stressful events he has ever done. It’s his first in the UK in “COVID times”.

With two days to go before gates, Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, revealed “Plan B”, which meant that all attendees had to wear a face mask in the event’s shopping village. Etchells says

it’s like playing “COVID roulette” but the good thing is that BBC Countryfile Christmas in the Park is completely outdoors.

Etchells concluded: “It’s a shame that the BBC have not been able to make it to site to film the event. It would have been the Countryfile Boxing Day Special, but COVID stopped that.

Still, it’s nice to do something special and in the winter. I have plans for the event, but I want to get this one right first.”

NEW ARENA TAKES SHAPE

Taking the reins

The London International Horse Show moved to ExCeL London, giving the revered equestrian event the opportunity to make major changes. H Power chats do you do when you find out W hat that the venue which has been your

home for the last 49 years brings its redevelopment schedule forward and tells you that you can no longer hold your event there? That was the exact scenario faced by the organisers of the London International Horse Show when COVID accelerated Olympia London’s new build schedule. The revised construction programme restricted the use of the venue, leaving Clarion, which own the show, and H Power, which manage the show, with no option but to find new digs.

“We didn’t have many options,” explained Jo Peck, marketing and communications director at H Power. “It had to be in London, and it had to be big.”

Clarion secured the space – ExCeL London – and H Power rallied the troops, a team of event delivery experts that could scramble new site designs together,

including a new-look arena that would work with ExCeL’s low ceiling height.

“It’s been a sea change for us,” continued Peck. “We have been at Olympia for 49 years. Most of us who have worked on the show have been on it for more than 20 years. A change like this makes you think; you consider the customers even more and you have this opportunity to change things.”

SHAKE THINGS UP

And things have changed considerably. “At Olympia, we used every square inch of space.

ExCeL gives us so much more space [from N4 to N11 on the north side and N8 to N11 on the south]. Even the horses have more space. Before, they would enter the arena from one large combined warm up ring and collecting ring. At ExCeL, we have one warm up ring and one collecting ring, and we have given the public access to both rings, with a Champagne bar and garden on one side.”

NICK BROOKS-WARD AND JO PECK Whilst the move has enabled Clarion and H Power to “shake things up”, more than 90,000 fans still can experience the best international competition, including FEI World Cup qualifiers in jumping, dressage and driving, alongside the usual mix of equestrian displays. However, to accommodate large crowds of equestrian fans, the creation of a new main arena has been central.

Peck added: “At Olympia, our hospitality boxes would sit on the gallery level of the Grand Hall. At ExCeL, there’s no gallery and a 10-metre ceiling height so as well as a new arena, we have had to build a platform to house the hospitality boxes.”

NOD TO OLYMPIA

Martin Clark, project director at Arena Seating, has worked closely with H Power’s Nick Brooks-Ward, operations director, and Marisa Beckman, operations consultant, to design a new arena, including 19 hospitality boxes and a Royal Box. More than 60 crew and 50 artics of kit have been needed to create the arena, which has acknowledged its roots with a nod to Olympia in terms of design.

“It’s been a complicated build,” Clark said.

“We started planning it in February. I was given carte blanche to design it and it is based on Olympia to a degree. But trying to fit an arena into this hall has been tight. We needed to maximise capacity and keep it feeling intimate.”

The show’s main ring has increased in size – it is ten metres longer – and capacity has increased. The arena can now accommodate almost 9,000 people compared to 7,500 at Olympia London. It means that H Power only need to manage 11 live performances and not 12 because of the arena’s increased seating capacity.

“It’s been a big build,” continued Clark.

“Once we had the design, we had to look at the build and how much time we had to build it. Initially, we had seven days but that was impossible. We tried to factor in overnight builds but that was not effective. It was decided between the client and ExCeL that we would be given more time.”

Clark and his team – Nathan May, project manager, and Dan Butler, site manager – have tweaked the arena design even whilst on site. It has been imperative to tweak

sightlines, move staircases, and adjust the height of seats.

Interestingly, each grandstand has been built independently of each other and out of sequence. Arena engaged a surveyor, who visited ExCeL with Clark and plotted points.

It has meant that the arena build has been able to be started anywhere. Plotting the site was crucial as there is just eight to ten inches between each grandstand.

CHANGES FOR THE BETTER

Clark called the arena “impressive” and is already looking ahead to 2022, where he can see that efficiencies can be made with regards to logistics and build.

Peck added: “The move wasn’t one we anticipated but it challenged us and has allowed us to make some pretty major changes and changes for the better. We have an emotional attachment to Olympia but if this works, will we want to go back? It’s not an answer we know the answer to yet.

“I do know that our move is going to make the experience for our participants better.

values and the fact that they can access backstage and look at the collecting ring and warm up ring.”

According to Peck, with six days until the doors open to guests, ticket sales are performing well. Three performances have sold out and the rest have sold 70 per cent of tickets. Two other performances are close to selling out and there will be profitability.

This is great news for Clarion and H Power as tickets did not go on sale until May [usually April] as the show’s new layout and licensing had to be agreed.

It’s the result of teamwork and for H Power, the team includes Simon Brooks-Ward, event director, Jonathan Gould, commercial director, Madeleine Marston, operations, Harry Guthrie, production, Andy Paul, in charge of floor

management, and Andy Reid, who is looking after the show’s broadcast element.

“We already know when our wash up meeting will be,” commented Peck. “I don’t suppose we will be back in Olympia next year. We’ll definitely have a show. I have never worked so hard on a show in all my life, and I can’t wait to see people walking into ExCeL, with the venue looking all Christmassy.”

ED screens play a huge role in how attendees experience an event. They display vital messaging, allow crystal clear communication, and draw the audience in, by displaying the best content that your guests do not want to miss.

Currently, in Dubai, guests are in awe of the UK’s Pavilion at Expo 2020; a 25-metre-high façade, integrated into a wooden structure that uses artificial intelligence to allow visitors to add words to a continuously changing “collective message” to the universe.

The messages are displayed on LED modules, supplied by PRG, which was appointed by Pico to deliver the engineering of 2,000 customised LED tiles. PRG’s Projects team sourced the tech from PRG China and a customised immersive audio system, which was then installed by PRG in Dubai.

Whilst the 2,000 tiles are small, collectively they have a huge impact, engaging visitors, who want to interact with the experience, created by designer Es Devlin.

PRG Projects’ Frederic Opsomer, general manager, described the project as a “beautiful challenge” and one of the most remarkable projects of his entire career.

Next year, ADI will be working on some of the biggest events to take place in the UK and across Europe, including the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the re-launch of the Women’s Tour de France and The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

These will be alongside annual occasions like Royal Ascot, the Great North Run, Goodwood Festival of Speed, and many more that it is contracted to supply.

Similarly, Lightmedia Displays has a busy order book for next year. Eddie ElliottSmith, managing director of the Leedsbased business, said: “2022 is looking very healthy. Forward bookings are great – clients who had to postpone their events in the pandemic have now confirmed their events in 2022. There are a number of large events planned for 2022 - the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June, Rugby World Cup, and Commonwealth Games, as well as all the other regional events… so let’s keep our fingers crossed it carries on like this.”

Next year, Lightmedia Displays will be supplying screens to several event, marking the Queen’s Jubilee

celebrations. In fact, Lightmedia Displays has no screen availability for the extended Bank Holiday weekend.

Elliott-Smith continued: “Event organisers are still very cautious; artists fees are rising so budgets are tighter than ever. Organisers appreciate that 2022 is going to be a busy year for the events industry and we have found that companies/organisers are booking their equipment earlier than usual.”

INVESTING IN KIT

Lightmedia Displays recently supplied big screens to Gateways Festival, Skipton. It was a challenging site. Lightmedia supplied 2 x 45sqm 5mm pixel trailer screens, one 12sqm demount screen, full production with four cameras and a Jimmy Jib, all encased in a weekend of monsoon weather.

Elliott-Smith added: “It was one of the best family events I have seen in years with something for everyone. Friday saw a film festival with films for the children in the afternoon and then one for the parents later in the evening on our massive LED screens.

“For the team, it was just fantastic to be back out and working in live events, seeing the crowds. It was a reminder of why we do this job.”

To cope with demand, Lightmedia Displays has purchased more 12sqm truck mounted LED screens to add to its portfolio.

ADI has added to its suite of kit too.

Taylor concluded: “We are continually investing in our modular LED products and our fleet of iCONIC mobile screens, but this year we’ve chosen to significantly broaden our live event services, offering complete event production solutions. orward-thinking. Professional.

Relevant. Valuable. Beneficial. The best trade event. Fun. These are just some of the words used by events professionals to describe their experience at Event Buyers Live (EBL) 2021.

Since its launch in 2014, the industry event has been hailed a resounding success by organisers and suppliers, who gathered at De Vere Orchard Hotel and EMCC for three days of pre-arranged meetings and networking.

EBL reconnected the live events industry, with data suggesting that more than 4,700 unique connections were made, and more than 700 pre-arranged meetings took place.

Neil Fagg, event director of EBL, said: “It was amazing to see so many events professionals, back in a room, connecting, networking and just looking happy to see old colleagues and make new contacts.

“We wanted the event to be the most sustainable one yet, so we engaged Blendology, a digital badging company. It meant that our guests could ‘tap’ badges and digitally exchange details. The data shows that attendees made 23 unique connections (on average). Our guests loved the new badge; it facilitated an easy exchange of contact details so that events professionals could remain connected post-event and it assisted with our social distancing measures.

This, coupled with more than 700 prearranged meetings, just shows the value of the EBL format. The event was created to facilitate conversation and introductions and I am proud to say that we have done that.”

Hardy said: “I’ve attended the past two Event Buyers Lives. The wide variety of industry peers who attend, across all forms of organisers and suppliers, allows for a great knowledge sharing and networking experience. I have left each event with deeper, more valuable relationships – with existing and new contacts – that have really made the difference on the event sites we operate on.”

Steve Cunningham, director of 20-20 Events, concurred: “EBL has hit on a concept that is a stroke of genius. It’s a very efficient use of everyone’s time and continues to be a very beneficial way of meeting suppliers, other organisers, and industry professionals.

I particularly enjoy the roundtable discussions and on top of all that, it’s great fun.”

Cuffe and Taylor’s Joe Robinson, senior event manager and ambassador, praised the event as the pre-arranged meetings “cut out millions of emails” and Catherine Bishop, operations director at The Game Fair, found EBL incredibly productive. She said: “This was my first year attending Event Buyers Live and I loved every minute of it. Event Buyers Live is a must for an event organiser. It is educational and productive, and I am already looking forward to next year.”

Sarah Greene, project director at TBI Media, said that EBL was “the best professional/ trade event I’ve ever been to”. She continued: “I really enjoyed connecting with past colleagues and making interesting new connections across both organisers and suppliers. The meetings, roundtables and presentations were all top class and the event organisation second to none.”

Events professionals from the Lawn Tennis Association, Goose Live, WOMAD, SC Productions, LS Events, Wasserman, Formula E, and Culture Liverpool attended the respected event, which facilitates prearranged one-on-one meetings between organisers and suppliers. It gives events professionals the chance to sit down with each other and discuss project and procurement requirements.

Jason Baris, managing director of Blade Rigg, was just one of the many suppliers supporting the event. A previous attendee of EBL, Baris said: “Event Buyers Live is a unique event like no other. The concept ensures that suppliers and organisers both wish to meet and that cuts out a lot of ‘cold pitches’ and chasing people at conferences.

You get to sit down and talk business straight away and most times with specific projects or events in mind. It is fantastic

and we will attend again next year. Neil and his team are so attentive and supportive throughout this complex event, they really ensure you get the most out of it.”

Likewise, Amy Gilbert, director of Site Equip, agreed with Baris. It was Site Equip’s first time at EBL – it used the event to meet new contacts. She said: “We have done plenty of exhibitions and I have to say it has been the slickest and most well-organised one we have ever been to.

We had a hugely successful time at the event, we were fully booked over the two days and then had six or seven additional meetings with new event organisers – which was very intense but very enjoyable!

I don’t know why it took us so long to be there! Wish we did it sooner!”

Tim Cook, managing director of Versatile Venues, has supported Event Buyers Live since its inception. He said of Event Buyers Live 2021: “Having attended all of the EBL events, despite the challenges of the past 18 months, the team staged, for us, the most valuable event to date. Both suppliers and organisers were of great quality and there to network with genuine interest and place business.”

Similarly, Ben Crawford, production and operations director at Wasserman, congratulated the team for “another great event”. He explained: “Yet again, Event Buyers Live provides a great environment for organisers to connect with suppliers and make meaningful and worthwhile connections, as well as a great place for the events community to network, especially in a time where we’ve been craving human connection for so long.”

Fagg concluded: “We know that everyone has been eager to get together, and network and we know that time out of the office is still precious, so I want to say a massive thank you to everyone that attended and supported Event Buyers Live 2021, who made it so special. Spooky business Bedford played host to LPH Concerts’ inaugural Halloween Town Festival. Greg Costa, senior project manager, reveals all

ombie ticket collectors, ghoulish ghosts and killer clowns were just some of the characters greeting festivalgoers at LPH Concerts and Events’ latest new venture when Halloween Town Festival took over The Great Meadow, Bedford, in October.

Craig David presents TS5 headlined the opening night of Halloween Town Festival (October 29-31), a new threeday event for 2021, which also saw David Rodigan, Shy FX, The Levellers, and Peter Hook and The Light play to 5,000-strong audiences.

All the acts took to a custom-built, three-story stage with a giant 40ft LED screen, flanked by Halloween-themed performers and walkabouts.

It was the first time that Halloween Town Festival had graced the town; it was a brave move to launch an event in a year where there has been so much event uncertainty.

However, LPH Concerts’ Greg Costa, Halloween Town Festival’s senior project manager, was certain that the time of year – Halloween – was the right time for a new event: “I’ve

been toying with the idea for about seven years,” Costa said.

“I come from a club promoter background, and I was finding that Halloween was busier than any bank holiday or New Year’s Eve. Sometimes, I’d have two or three Halloween events going off at the same time because of their popularity.”

He continued: “The event needed to be indoors because of the time of year and the weather but I wanted the event to have a festival feel. I almost produced an event in Milton Keynes in 2018 but couldn’t get the licence sorted in time.”

Costa partnered with Mark Harrison, managing director of LPH Concerts and Events.

Harrison found The Great Meadow in Bedford. The venue was eery with plenty of space for multiple stages.

“We applied for a licence in May 2020. We thought COVID would have blown over by then, but it became more apparent that it wasn’t going to happen.

Then we applied again for our licence, and it was granted in January. But we still gave it another month. Every month, we’d ask the question: ‘do we put our balls on the line and risk it, or wait?’

“It was now or never.

Halloween comes only once a year, so I booked the acts for Friday and Saturday and Mark booked the Sunday.”

In April, Costa and the LPH team started to promote the show, which was scaled down slightly because of COVID. “We originally planned for more than one stage with a 10,000 capacity,” explained Costa. “We took the advice of the council and planned for one stage and 4,000 people.

For year one, in a small town like Bedford, and considering what we were up against, we were happy with that.

“But when we went on sale, ticket sales were not as quick as we would have liked. We sat down and basically said ‘would you buy a Christmas hamper in April?’. Consumer confidence was low, we were still in a pandemic, it was a new event – we did not panic but changed our marketing strategy to focus on Halloween and the artists. From August, we saw consistent sales.”

Costa described the event as probably one of the most stressful that he has organised, but it was worthwhile.

Supply chain issues were managed by Harrison’s “black book of contacts” and there was nothing that could not be overcome.

“I had forgotten what it was like to start a brand from scratch, when you have nothing to go on from the year before,” Costa added. “We had to sell the show based on our line-up. That wasn’t easy because some of the DJs we had booked had 30 to 40 shows before ours. But Halloween is that one night of the year where you can dress up and have some fun; it’s not your average night out.”

“We’re looking at a second stage and we hope to push our numbers up to 8,000,” Costa explained. “Our main goal is to top what we did this year.

“We’re busy working on the line-up, we’re busy looking at the logistics of adding a second room and we’re talking to sponsors and partners to grow Halloween Town Festival.

“Perhaps promoting a Halloween festival in April was too early but without sounding too cliché, this event really was a team effort to make it what it was.

“I haven’t seen anything like this before, in terms of production, in a small town like Bedford. It wasn’t an event in a big top with one stage and some lasers. The attention to detail was second to none and that’s why people are now talking about us,” Costa concluded.

SEXUAL VIOLENCE AT MUSIC FESTIVALS

Time for action Dr Hannah Bows, associate professor in criminal law at Durham Law School and deputy director of the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse, discusses her latest study on sexual violence at music festivals. What can organisers do to tackle the problem? the last few years, there has O ver been increasing attention on safety

at music festivals after several headlines reported one or more rapes or sexual assaults. In 2015, Kate Lloyd wrote a piece for Vice on the “rape problem” at music festivals and industry-wide ambivalence.

In 2016, several women reported being sexually assaulted at a music and arts festival in Tasmania, Australia.

Sweden’s Bravalla festival announced in 2017 that it would be cancelling the festival the following year due to several rapes and sexual assaults over the fourday event. In 2018, the Statement Festival was held in Gothenburg, Sweden – the first festival exclusively for women, transgender, and nonbinary people. In other words, everyone but (cis) men. Similar headlines appeared in the UK in 2017, and a survey

by YouGov that same year reported that

almost half of female festivalgoers under the age of 40 faced unwanted sexual behaviour at music festivals. However, as we know one in three women and one in six men experience some form of sexual or physical violence in their lifetime and almost all experience harassment or assault in a public place, it is likely that these media reports and surveys reveal only a fraction of the sexual violence that occurs at festivals.

In response, several festivals and industry bodies in the UK (and beyond) began to speak up about the issue and commit to improving prevention and support for victims. The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) led a “black-out” campaign where 28 festivals blacked out their websites to raise awareness of sexual violence and confirm their commitment to addressing it. AIF

also produced a charter that outlines what festivals should be doing and what festivalgoers should expect from them in tackling sexual violence. Many grassroot organisations had already been campaigning for several years to raise awareness and improve policy and practice at festivals, including Safe Gigs for Women, White Ribbon UK, Good Night Out Campaign, and Rape Crisis.

It was during this time, and in response to the increased media coverage and industry awareness, that we launched our research project examining sexual violence at music festivals, funded by the British Academy. We wanted to know more about what was happening at festivals – who was carrying out sexual assaults, where were they happening and how were festivals responding operationally and strategically?

SEXUAL VIOLENCE AT MUSIC FESTIVALS said they had experienced one or more incidents at a festival. Overall, a third of women said they had been sexually harassed and eight per cent had been sexually assaulted. Very few disclosed the experiences and for those who did, friends were the most common source.

SAFETY CONCERNS

We designed a survey which collected information on festivalgoer perceptions of safety, the features of festivals that increase or reduce their feelings of safety, experiences of physical and sexual violence, disclosures, and responses. We took that survey to three festivals during 2018 and published an online version, yielding 450 responses. This gave us some insight into experiences at festivals.

As recently reported in the Journal of Gender Based Violence, most festivalgoers told us they felt safe at festivals. Several environmental, personal, and social features of festivals increased feelings of safety for women, men, and differently gendered respondents – lighting, presence of security, presence of welfare and medical services, festival staff/volunteers and friends. Conversely,

crowds, poor lighting and the behaviour of security staff were the most common environmental features reducing feelings of safety, as well as police presence and Police behaviour. Other festivalgoers being intoxicated through alcohol or drugs, and groups of men, also reduced feelings of safety. Perhaps unsurprisingly, respondents said they felt unsafe in some spaces at festivals, particularly campsites, walkways, stage areas and woodlands.

Women were more likely than men to feel unsafe in these areas.

Despite reporting feeling generally safe at festivals, respondents also disclosed high levels of concern about physical violence, sexual harassment, and sexual assault. Unsurprisingly, women were more concerned about sexual harassment and assault than men, and a higher proportion of women

We wanted to know more about the nature of sexual violence at festivals – in what contexts it has happened, the behaviour of perpetrators and bystanders, and the responses victims have received when disclosing. We interviewed 13 women with experience of sexual violence at a UK music festival. They told us that what they experienced was an extension of the harassment and assault that they experienced daily in public, and private, spaces. As such, the women felt complaisant (though still angry); they had come to expect sexual violence at festivals in the same way they did in other spaces. They described experiences of groping, rubbing, and touching – often in the crowded areas near the stage – as well as been followed, verbally harassed, catcalled, and raped.

All the harassment and assaults were perpetrated by men – typically strangers or “relative” strangers – someone they had only recently met. Most women had experienced this as a festivalgoer, but some had also been assaulted or harassed while working at a festival.

They told us they felt shocked, scared, violated and often the experience had ruined the festival. Some said they had stopped attending events or undertook a variety of precautionary tactics to try and reduce the risk of sexual violence.

This included avoiding certain spaces, always remaining with friends and, in some cases, ensuring they had male chaperones to “protect” them. Some women had directly challenged the perpetrator, and this had prevented further assault, but other women described the behaviour escalating, highlighting the potential risk women face when responding to sexual violence.

“ANYTHING GOES”

Although the women in our study said sexual violence at festivals was an extension of everyday sexual violence, they also felt several characteristics of festivals contributed to the existence and impeded prevention efforts and appropriate responses. This included the size and scale of festivals, providing ideal opportunities for perpetrators to harass and assault with anonymity. One woman described it as “drive by misogyny”. This in turn made prevention efforts difficult and meant the responses from many staff at festivals were limited as the women often could not describe how the perpetrator looked in detail and/or finding someone to report behaviour to in a crowded space could be challenging. Our participants

also felt the culture of festivals contributed to the normalisation of sexual violence at festivals. Women described festivals as having an “anything goes” culture of freedom, where normal rules do not apply and “sexual experimentation” is encouraged, becoming a thinly veiled excuse for sexual violence. This made it difficult to report sexual violence, as many peers and professionals had an expectation that sexual violence would happen, leading to a culture of normalisation.

They also felt there was a wider apathy in the industry to acknowledging and taking responsibility for addressing sexual violence. One woman told us about her frustration that the increased awareness of, and commitment to, improving the environmental impact of festivals was not mirrored in relation to the safety of women. She wondered why plastic bottles were given higher priority than preventing women from being assaulted and raped.

For women who did disclose rape or sexual assaults to festival staff or security, responses were typically poor.

Several women said they were dismissed, judged, or blamed. Others said they were believed but staff said they couldn’t help, due to the size of the festival or other logistical challenges. In a couple of cases, the response was good, and the women were supported to make a disclosure which was recorded, and the perpetrator was identified and removed.

WHAT COULD BE DONE?

So, what can we learn from the data so far? Clearly, sexual violence at festivals happens and across the industry there is some recognition of this. However, many

festivals have remained silent on the issue, or have yet to make a commitment to addressing sexual violence. Many do not have policies in place, and we have not found any festivals so far that have made sexual violence training mandatory for staff or volunteers.

But there are a number of things festivals can do. In the same way that other aspects of safety are prioritised by festivals, there must be recognition of and commitment to making festivals safe for women. This means taking some responsibility for prevention and responses. Acknowledging it happens and accepting that responsibility is the first step. Awareness raising, training of staff on how to identify potential sexual violence (in all forms) and how to intervene, as well as how to respond to disclosures, should be mandatory and this alongside a wider policy on preventing sexual violence should be made a condition of an event licence.

Sexual violence is a personal violation but also a public health issue and should be approached as such, with a multi-agency strategy for preventing and responding to sexual violence. We also recommend that specialist organisations, such as Safe Gigs for Women and local Rape Crisis charities, are included in these efforts and, where possible, are on site to feed into security meetings, risk management and support for victims.

Disclosures should be recorded, even if only basic information is available, to ensure sexual violence at festivals can be monitored and to facilitate evidence in this area both for operational and research purposes. By recording

disclosures of incidents, important intelligence on sexual violence can be captured. Our interviews suggest that disclosures are not routinely recorded, and this evidence is lost. This makes understanding and responding to sexual violence at festivals more difficult.

Finally, a culture shift where sexual violence is not normalised, expected, and therefore minimised is critical. The above recommendations will help to build an environment where sexual violence is not tolerated but this requires commitment from everyone. This includes artists and bands, many of whom perform music that is inherently misogynistic. This should be completely banned. Moreover, we have seen great examples of bands taking a clear stance on sexual violence, calling out the behaviour and in some cases stopping a performance because they have witnessed or heard about sexual violence in the audience. Research in Australia indicates that bystanders could play an important role in challenging sexism, misogyny and sexual violence but may be reluctant to do so and need training and support to intervene safely. We also think there should be trained safety officers, ambassadors or “champions” who are positioned throughout the festival site – including on stage, where there is a vantage point for seeing what is going on in the crowd – to identify and respond to harassment and violence. It is important that everyone at festivals – organisers, staff, volunteers, security, festivalgoers and artists and performers – take an unequivocal stance on sexual violence and individually and collectively contribute to shaping a new culture.

Just the ticket How Tixel helped Bournemouth 7s, the sports and music festival, keep attendance up and refunds down

A

fter launching as a rugby festival in 2008 to a crowd of 8,000, Bournemouth 7s has quickly grown into one of the world’s largest sport and music festivals. Showcasing everything from netball and hockey to dodgeball and CrossFit, along with a music festival across 12 themed arenas, the event is now attended by 30,000 fans, including 4,000 campers and glampers, 2,000 VIPS and 400 sports teams.

In 2021, the Bournemouth 7s team partnered with Tixel, an online platform designed for safe ticket resale. It would be the festival’s first outing with COVID-19 restrictions in play.

NO-SHOWS AND REFUND REQUESTS

With the UK’s “Freedom Day” (July 19) taking place only one month prior to the event, the Bournemouth 7s team took on an astonishing feat – putting together a 30,000 capacity sports and music festival in just 42 days. With their work cut out for them, the last thing the team needed was a heavy workload for refund requests and resale enquiries.

Bournemouth 7s engaged Tixel and relaunched the sell-out

festival. With the UK coming out of lengthy lockdowns and restrictions on events, Bournemouth 7s 2021 required all attendees to show proof of their COVID-19 status — vaccination, a negative lateral flow test, or natural immunity.

Such proof is now a requirement to run a safe festival, but these measures can also increase the rate of no-shows and refund requests if a ticketholder can no longer attend the event/festival.

Thankfully for Bournemouth 7s, this wasn’t the case.

Callie Worth, commercial manager, explained: “If individuals unfortunately caught COVID-19 or simply couldn’t attend the new dates, they were directed towards Tixel. This was a great way for fans to essentially get their money back — while replacing the attendee with a new customer who could attend our event.”

EASING THE WORKLOAD

The Tixel partnership allowed Bournemouth 7s to do several things: • Successfully operate a norefunds policy by offering a safe place for fans to trade tickets if they were unwell, had a change

of plans, or didn’t meet the COVID-19 safety requirements in time for the event.

• Reduce the workload of event staff by redirecting all refund and resale ticketing enquiries to Tixel; and • Harness fresh audience data from a waitlist to run targeted ticket sales campaigns for the 2022 event.

Worth continued: “Our fans successfully traded more than 1,000 tickets, which is incredible and something we were very impressed with. By reselling these tickets, it saved us a number of no-shows and kept our festival atmosphere alive.

The site felt busy, particularly on the Saturday, which was really helped by the resale tickets.

BOURNEMOUTH 7S “Our Tixel partnership definitely helped with our workload. It was really easy for us to redirect customers to the Tixel website and encourage them to resell their ticket rather than offer a refund, as we operate a no refunds policy.

“Tixel was incredibly helpful, and customers found it easy to use which helped us hugely. It was also great for us to redirect individuals to Tixel to try and resell their ticket, so that we knew we weren’t completely losing out on a customer if it was being resold.”

FRESH AUDIENCE DATA

With COVID-19 restrictions in place, waitlists have become more important than ever to help sell-out festivals and events. By having a dynamic waitlist in place with Tixel, Bournemouth 7s fans could see the moment a ticket was listed for sale and secure it without having to wait for new release announcements or risk being caught out by ticket touts on unregulated marketplaces or Facebook event pages.

Not only that, but the data also collected by the Bournemouth 7s waitlist meant that the festival’s marketing team could now target customers it didn’t know it had. Now, by targeting people who missed out on tickets to the 2021 event, Bournemouth 7s has an audience of eager fans ready to buy tickets for 2022 – minimising the marketing spend they would have previously needed to reach these fans.

TRANSFER TICKETS

Tixel’s promoter tool enabled Bournemouth 7s to take control of its ticketing strategy and provided a fair and safe place for fans to transfer tickets. Worth concluded: “We would definitely recommend Tixel as a resale platform. Their amazing team was easy to contact, and any issues were dealt with immediately, which was hugely appreciated. The biggest benefit for us was the ease of re-directing people to Tixel for resale enquiries, taking away the workload from processing refunds. We are very much looking forward to working with Tixel again for the 2022 festival!”

FURNITURE Whilst the last 18 months has been tough on the sector, it is important that furniture experts remain on top of trends and provide organisers with furniture items that meet their requirements and match expectations.

Harvey added: “This last year has been so very different from normal, but it has given us a chance to be much more hands on with our suppliers. With no trade shows taking place, our suppliers have been very pro-active, setting up virtual tours enabling us to see their stock in showrooms from Italy to Indonesia and allowing us to make more interesting choices for the year ahead. It’s certainly been a challenging purchasing process though.

“This year we’ve had such a huge range of furniture to research, as two seasons worth of designs have given us a fantastic broad brush to paint with. We have seen a real resurgence in bright colours and soft velvets, which we love. Some of our new pieces have a fantastic 1970s retro vibe to them.”

Xpect Furniture, GL events’ furniture division, is planning to launch a sustainable chair and bar stool in 2022. According to Michelle Amer, sales director at Xpect Furniture, it is a theme a lot of organisers are asking for.

“Xpect Furniture is a business with sustainability at the forefront of their operations, hence they aim to develop this within their product range in 2022 and beyond,” said Amer.

In 2021, Xpect Furniture supplied furniture and floor coverings to several conferences and exhibitions, including COP26, The Labour Party Conference, Home Building and Renovating, Frieze London and Frieze Masters. In 2022, the company has been appointed as the priority furniture supplier for Farnborough Air Show, Eye Fair, Harrogate Fashion Week, and many more.

Amer commented: “Exhibition and conference organisers appear to be a lot more confident for 2022. Many organisers have already made bookings for 2022, from January through to the end of the year.

But what style of furniture are organisers and event planners requesting? Is there demand for products that promote social distancing? Harvey explained that Furniture on the Move has a “whole gamut” of items within its repertoire to suit a range of styles and designs.

and 2022 will be an interesting year. Harvey said: “From around May this year, it was absolutely fantastic to see the events industry rise from nothing at all to a tidal wave of work normally only reserved for that crazy part of the year where all festivals, brand experiences and launches are all happening at the same time.

“It was wonderful to see some old friends and familiar faces on site at the events we have been part of in the last six months. There have been some casualties and some new

start-ups, and some companies have risen from the ashes, but it seems we are all busy and all excited about the year ahead and the fantastic industry that we operate in.”

Jones concluded: “From January onwards, we are looking forward to once again continuing to provide furniture, lighting and bars to our exceptional repeat client base who continue to return month after month, year after year.

At the same time, enquiries for spring/summer 2022 have been off the scale.”

2021 has given us a flurry of activity focussed on sustainability in live events. The Tyndal Centre for Climate Change Research and Massive Attack launched their Super Low Carbon Live Music report, helping to provide some scientific context and targets for the sector. The LIVE Green declaration and charter followed, signed off by the live music industry’s 13 key associations, giving direction and a framework for action toward a net zero target by 2030. Coldplay launched their laudable 12-point plan approach to more sustainable touring. Music Declares Emergency (MDE) continued to engage the industry with a campaign pension divestment. Music EQ launched a dedicated carbon literacy course for music and there has been an acceleration of new tools and resources to support organisers, not least our very own Vision:2025 Resource Hub.

efore the traditional review of what has been a (thankfully) significant year for sustainability in live events, I’d like to lead with a key forward-facing initiative, to steer us towards reaching net zero in 2030.

A Vision:2025 initiative to develop an industry Green Code of Conduct could establish consistent, work-able sustainability standards for outdoor events. The code has been shaped

by Vision:2025 member associations,

including AIF, AFO, NOEA, and EIF, and organisations such as Festival Republic and Julie’s Bicycle.

Developing a code of conduct brings multiple benefits: It could provide standards that are credible, realistic, and crucially, workable, for all event organisers, bringing with it the clarity that stakeholders across the sector are asking for, as we take steps to reduce emissions and impacts, as part of the industry’s journey to net zero.

The annual Vision:2025 Industry Green Survey, published this month, shows that two thirds of events are measuring their carbon footprint, a 33 per cent increase compared to the 2020 survey. Whilst this is likely to be above the industry average, due to the survey participant profile, it indicates a representative increase. However, even amongst events already acting on climate, 70 per cent of organisations are yet to put a net zero strategy in place.

The DCMS is currently exploring the role local authorities might take in regulating the environmental performance of events. A key finding of this year’s Industry Green Survey is that local authority expectations are changing: 15 per cent of events reported that their local authority required information about sustainability in 2021, and a further 25 per cent said it has been indicated that this would be in place soon. This is why a Green Code of Conduct is now pertinent.

I feel positive that events can still make an important contribution towards the global ambition of 1.5°C and wish you seasonal greetings and hopes for a healthy, green 2022.
