EDITOR’S LETTER
A
SUMMER 2022
s I speak to more and more #eventprofs, the intensity of this “season” is evident. The events industry always has strived for perfection, to be bigger and better and to improve on previous incarnations. But I’m seeing the pressure; the pressure to come back with a bang, and you can sense the anxiety. After a two-year hiatus, more must be delivered. More buzz. More pizazz. Yet, in the current climate, “more” must be delivered for a lot more buck. Organisers are complaining about extortionate price increases, “tough shit” attitudes, and how suppliers have let them down at the last minute. But the supply chain is complaining too. They feel pressured to deliver a project at a loss, offer discounts, and swallow increasing material, fuel, and haulage costs because organisers do not want/can’t afford (delete as appropriate) to pay for infrastructure and last-minute extras. Pre-COVID, suppliers would have pandered to the client and done a few “extras” as a favour. However, our current landscape is different. What’s gone before is no longer relevant. It is tough out there. Whilst on-site I have heard people say: “You don’t know any joiners, do you? I need 12”. The lack of resource is terrifying. Organisers know this – has it stopped them asking for more? Previously, events professionals would have bought themselves out of a situation, but that’s no longer an option. Throwing money at a problem does not solve a problem. It offers short-term relief. Of course, the events industry is flexible – we’re problem solvers, and we make things happen. Events are being pushed over the line but that is because event builds are going to the wire. That’s not sustainable. Most people are being realistic and have acknowledged the extraordinary situation we’re in. However, it hasn’t stopped some events professionals from forgetting their manners and losing all sense of compassion. The stress is evident and as a result, ugly, awkward, and uncomfortable scenarios are unfolding. What’s abundantly clear is that event industry suppliers are absolutely busting their backsides “to fight other people’s fires” and deliver events for clients, who are desperate to make a statement. The pressure is real, but I am not sure how much more the elastic will stretch or who will snap first. Always happy to listen, Caroline @StandOutmag

INDUSTRY UPDATES EXCLUSIVE
PIC OF THE MONTH
Next generation of eventprofs still facing career barriers A survey of 200 students, graduates, and young people looking to build a career in the events industry are not confident about finding the right job. According to the Event People survey, the biggest barriers to entry are having enough event experience and finding the right opportunities to get valuable experience. Seventy per cent of respondents lack confidence in finding the right job and only 17 per cent of those questioned find it easy to find the right opportunities. A lack of good paid opportunities to work are holding back the next generation of events professionals that wish to work in major events, festivals and entertainment, and hospitality. In fact, event operations and production, project management, risk management, and event design are the most desired specialisms.
John Tasker, director of Massive, believes that the answer lies in extensive industry support and mentorship schemes and by creating opportunities for event students and young people to develop specific knowledge and skills. Tasker said: “Our industry needs to work harder to attract future talent and be more open to mentoring young people, supporting people to get experience, and welcoming the next generation of events professionals and future leaders. We must find a way to start conversations with these young people and welcome them into our businesses as we navigate our industry’s next exciting chapter.” If you would like to offer your support and can help a young person looking for a career in the events industry, email hello@weareeventpeople.co.uk
Gateways Festival forced to postpone after staging supplier ceases to trade Gateways Festival has been forced to postpone until next year because its staging supplier has ceased trading. StagedUK, based in Newark, has confirmed that it has ceased trading whilst it “tries to find the best solution for creditors and customers”. In a statement, Sarah and Eddie ElliottSmith, festival directors, said that they had paid StagedUK in full. Whilst every effort had been made to find an alternative provider, given the late notice, it was not possible. Gateways Festival and The Great Yorkshire Dales Proms, due to take place on July 23 and 24, will now take place on September 1-3, 2023. The statement read: “It is with deepest regret that the incredibly difficult decision has been made to postpone this year’s Gateways
Festival and The Great Yorkshire Dales Proms. As directors, we are heartbroken that a project, which ourselves and our dedicated team have worked tirelessly on, has come to this point. “Whilst we know this is extremely disappointing, a situation has arisen in which the stage supplier (StagedUK) has ceased trading even though they were paid in full for our event. Whilst every effort has been made in finding another stage company to provide one, we have failed to secure one due to being amidst the festival season. “It is with a great deal of sadness that this has become the ultimate outcome of months of hard work and can only apologise for those who were looking forward to attending Aireville Park.”
Bristol Light Festival 2022 attracted 170,000 visitors and brought an additional spend of £3.4m into city centre businesses. Of those 170,000 people, 115,000 chose to visit the city solely because the event was taking place. The event was so successful that Bristol City Centre BID, the festival’s organiser, has confirmed its return in 2023, and its expansion from a six-day show into a ten-day event. Bristol Light Festival will run from February 3-12.
TWEETS OF THE MONTH @PoliceAtGlasto @glastonbury just keeps getting safer and safer with fewer crimes recorded each year. Only 76 crimes have been reported to us over the entire five days and nights @Slater81 What the live events industry is currently pulling off is an absolute testament to the people we have working in the industry. Could have so easily been “events chaos” as well as “travel chaos”.
NEWS IN BRIEF Revelland has created a series of educational videos that gives artists ideas on how to add sensory effects to live shows, making them more immersive for audiences with disabilities. The DCMS Committee has launched an inquiry into spectator safety at football matches and major sporting events. Evidence is required by September 8. Ghostwriter Consultancy and Events has launched Pink Dot, a new independent national concert promoting division.
The Association of Independent Festivals has appointed Matthew Phillip, CEO of Notting Hill Carnival, as its new chair. Cube Modular has launched a pop-up sustainable ticket office solution that can be folded down and stacked for easy transportation. Tarren Production, organiser of Winter Glow, the festive experience and illuminated light trail, has signed a six-year agreement with Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire.

BST HYDE PARK
BST rocked Record audiences attended a new-look American Express presents BST Hyde Park
O and three weekends, American ver nine spectacular shows
Express presents BST Hyde Park demonstrated the power of live music as the event became the biggest BST Hyde Park event ever, selling 530,000 tickets across all the shows. Music fans flocked to Hyde Park to see some of the biggest artists on the planet headline; Adele, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Eagles, Pearl Jam, and Duran Duran were joined by an incredible line up of support artists, including Pixies, Stereophonics, Johnny Marr, and Nile Rodgers and Chic. “It felt amazing to be back after a three-year hiatus,” explained LS Events’ Steve Reynolds, BST Hyde Park’s event director. “Hyde Park is a really special place to put on an event and it felt good to be back and with a lot of familiar faces. American Express presents BST Hyde Park has a wonderfully inclusive, family feel to it and our team were delighted to return to doing what we do best.”
LS Events works alongside AEG Presents and provides operational project management, site management, and event management to the event. Reynolds continued: “LS Events has been fortunate to work on every show, an incredible 51 in total. We came back to this prestigious site with a mission to deliver this event to a level of excellence that has never been experienced by our audience and artists before. I believe we achieved that.”
BETTER EXPERIENCE
2022 was the first year that the event extended its run from two weekends to three weekends (from six shows to nine); this combined with the world-class artists that AEG Presents secured meant that the site-wide production was more sophisticated than ever before. Everything was bigger and better. The biggest change for the event was the introduction of a new Great
Oak stage – Star Live’s Titan stage – and new a larger hospitality offer. Laura Armstrong, senior project manager at LS Events, said: “We’ve worked closely with AEG Presents to uplift the hugely ambitious creative elements at the show. “This year saw a new creative design across the whole of the site in line with the new creative vision for the next few years. One of the most iconic areas at BST Hyde Park is the Great Oak Stage and utilising Star Live’s new Titan stage, Mark Ward and the Proper Productions Team worked to develop the next generation of this focal point of the event.” Armstrong continued: “The Grandstand Structure was another redesign, which provided additional premium viewing capacity and suites. The redesigned front of house towers reduced the size which improved the general admission view, whilst giving a better experience for technical production crews.”

BST HYDE PARK
SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT
Star Live has a long history of introducing new products at major shows in Hyde Park. The origins of the Titan can be traced back to the staging Star Live designed for Adele’s tour in 2017, which introduced the Ultra towers with their 100-ton capacity. Simon Broyd, chief commercial officer at Star Live, commented: “AEG Presents has a new contract in place with Royal Parks through to 2027, and Star Live has a new contract in place with AEG Presents for the same period. This long-term commitment from all parties allowed for significant investment into the event, the site, and the production. “The Ultra towers were incorporated into a concept design to support AEG Presents’ bid for the current Hyde Park contract. This design underwent multiple refinements during lockdown, based around a set of core requirements. It had to deal with the production requirements of all known potential festival headliners, provide best-in-class sightlines, provide a rigging loft with easy and safe access, built in catwalks and spreader trusses, and critically, 100 tons of rigging capacity in the main stage area. To achieve all the above, we developed from scratch a new folding (and/or flatpack) horizontal truss system, which at 2.1 metres high and weighing more than eight tons for a 30m span, seemed to suit being called Titan.” For BST Hyde Park, Titan was customised. The roof was able to support 74 tons of screens, plus the house audio and lighting rigs, and all the
18 n www.eventbuyerslive.com
artist packages without any issues. But it was not the only change. The event’s hospitality offer was also vastly increased. Broyd added: “The hospitality grandstand – known as the Accor Live Limitless Grandstand – had a significantly increased capacity this year. It was both wider and deeper than previous years but still had the same amazing views of the Great Oak stage. The key upgrade to the structure was using Star Live’s Viewbox units as the VIP hospitality suites.” Also new for 2022 were two highperformance front-of-house positions that Star Live created with its Viewbox units. Not only did this provide a perfect working space for engineers, but it also doubled as a viewing platform using the rooftop terrace.
GOOD TO BE BACK
Star Live was just one supplier contracted to BST Hyde Park, reporting into LS Events. Instant Marquees, Peppermint Bars, PTL, and Capital Sound, a Solotech company, provided event infrastructure and services to the large-scale event also. Solotech provided video and audio equipment across the entire site. The video screen measured almost 1,500 square metres and a total of 182 Martin Audio line array cabinets and 44 subs were used too. Capital Sound increased the number of cabinets it put in, putting in an additional four cabinets to each of the main hangs, and the cabinets on the rear six delays were upgraded too. According to Martin Connelly, senior project manager at Capital
Sound, the addition of the extra cabinets provided more control of the sound on-site. Connelly said: “What stood out for me on this project was the co-operation between all departments to get the show happening from two years of nothing.” Broyd agreed and concluded: “Titan was prominently designed with one thing in mind: to be the ultimate touring solution or festival focal point as well as the most advanced production facility for the world’s biggest artists. As BST Hyde Park attracts the biggest artists on the planet, the Titan stage couldn’t have had a better baptism than this event. The feedback received from everyone involved in the stage – from artists, management, designers, and riggers, through to technicians and engineers – was overwhelmingly fantastic.”

MASTERPIECE A NEPTUNUS STRUCTURE
Work of art Visitors to Masterpiece, the luxury art fair, were greeted by a refreshed layout. 20-20 Events’ Steve Cunningham, head of operations, walked StandOut through the new designs
I
t’s a boiling hot summer’s day when StandOut heads to Royal Hospital Chelsea to check out the build of Masterpiece London, the luxury art and collectibles fair. If StandOut had visited just two days earlier, we would have been greeted by Steve Cunningham, director of 20-20 Events, with his feet in a makeshift paddling pool – just one of the welfare measures deployed to make life during the build a little more comfortable as temperatures reached 32C. The pool, constructed from scaffolding boards and tarpaulin, made a huge difference to the crews working hard to deliver a “refreshed” Masterpiece. “We knew that we had to come back bigger and better with a fresh design and fresh thinking,” Cunningham explained, taking shelter in crew catering. Essentially, Masterpiece is housed within two huge Neptunus structures that previously ran east to west across the site. They now run north to south, and a huge fabric wrap helps the structures to blend in with the Christopher Wren building that sits proudly in the grounds. Cunningham has worked hard with the organiser of Masterpiece, Neptunus, the temporary structure provider, and Stabilo, the Dutch-based interior fit-out specialist, to come up with a complete re-design that would excite visitors after the show’s two-year hiatus. “What we’ve ended up with is amazing,” Cunningham continued. “We have a 65m-wide Evo and an extra
55m-wide Evo, built around an obelisk. We’ve got rid of the old Portico entrance and have a new entrance design. “We have one entrance in and a different exit to give a nicer flow through the space, but by moving the structures from east to west to north to south, we’ve got room to expand the space by another five metres, which would enable another dozen galleries to exhibit.”
LICENCE AND LOGISTICS
The new design has meant Cunningham and his team have had to carefully plan where to “hide” essential infrastructure, such as toilets and kitchens, and there’s the small issue of five soundproofed generator and HVAC compounds. The soundproofing is a condition of the event’s new planning permission/licence, which has specified noise limits. Hence, each compound is blanketed by an acoustic compound, created by Contract Scaffolding and Echo Barrier. In fact, there are 675 Echo Barriers on site. But it’s not the only change. Cunningham, assisted by Julia Wickham, event operations manager, Kelia Brooks, event administrator, Dan Barlow and Magdalena Dworczynska, both working on pass administration, David Watkins, health and safety manager, and Steve Bennett, health and safety officer, have implemented a new site induction system [contractors scan a QR code], sourced new suppliers, and have searched London for land to be used as exhibitor holding areas.
Cunningham continued: “We have a high security period where the art and exhibitors load in. There are hundreds of trucks, and we schedule them all. Previously, we’ve been able to hire land nearby to use as a holding area so that we don’t block roads or have carnage on site. We used to use land at Nine Elms but it is being redeveloped and so we have spent months searching for a new area.

MASTERPIECE MASTERPIECE PRESENTS
We managed to secure New Covent Garden Flower Market for the install, but we must use Battersea Park for the derig. Two locations are not ideal, and we’ll probably have members of staff at the market, directing people to Battersea Park, when it comes to the derig but it’s what we’ve had to do.”
PADDLING POOL
LOOKING AHEAD
In terms of supply chain, Brexit has caused a few issues and so Cunningham has had to source new furniture, carpet, and power suppliers. “We’ve changed a few contracts because of Brexit and without looking at the spreadsheet, our costs are up by 20 to 25
per cent,” said Cunningham, who explained that his team are also undertaking a full sustainability audit of the show. Lots of things are being measured with a view to implementing operational changes in 2023. But what is Cunningham looking forward to the most? “I
love it when the doors open,” he concluded. “That’s when our role changes. The big stress is getting the build done on time and to the right standard. Everyone is struggling with experience, so we’ve had a few moments where we have had to change our priorities, but things are going well, and it looks amazing.”

EVENT BUYERS LIVE
EBL: An inclusive event Events professionals will soon be able to register for Event Buyers Live. Discover when and how this year’s event aims to be the most inclusive yet
F
or eight years, StandOut Multimedia, organiser of Event Buyers Live, has worked hard to deliver the best industry event it possibly can. This year is no exception. Having listened to delegate feedback, Event Buyers Live has recruited several ambassadors, who will not only champion the event but also act as an extension of the organising team. Clare Goodchild, director of Organise Chaos, Tiffany Gaskell, event director of Victorious Festival, Andrew Smith, operations director at London Marathon Events, Gill Tee, festival director of Black Deer Festival, and James Fitzgerald, head of events and partnerships at GLA/Mayor of London are the first five ambassadors to be announced. Joining them will be Ben Whur, director of Proud Events, who will advise Event Buyers Live on diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI). Whur commented: “Event Buyers Live has built a great reputation for being a productive and thought-provoking
24 n www.eventbuyerslive.com
industry event that brings event organisers and suppliers together for pre-qualified business meetings and some amazing networking. I have attended the event and have seen the event grow, and I am pleased to report that the organising team always have listened to feedback and advice. “They recognise that DEI is a huge topic and like many other event organisers, want their event to be more diverse and inclusive.”
DEI STRATEGY
In 2014, Whur launched Proud Events; an event and festival production agency – its ethos as a business has been to embrace diversity, challenge exclusion, and to try and foster a culture of inclusion. Whur added: “I’m honoured and excited to be joining the Event Buyers Live team this year. I’m proud to have also been asked to assist the team in developing a diversity and inclusion strategy. Event
Buyers Live is a great event. With the support of industry colleagues and the team, we want to make it a diverse and inclusive place to do business.”
REGISTRATION OPEN
Following the successful introduction of event ambassadors at Event Buyers Live 2021, the 2022 event’s ambassadors will support everyone attending EBL – both organisers and suppliers – so that they can get the best experience from their time on site. Goodchild said: “I am honoured to have been asked to be an ambassador at Event Buyers Live. Last year, I had my first experience of the event and loved every minute. It’s been great to hear about some of the plans that the organising team have planned for 2022. DEI is a massively important topic and so I am pleased that EBL is trying to make the event more inclusive and that I will be playing an important role in that.”

THE PLACE TO DO BUSINESS
CLARE GOODCHILD
BEN WHUR
Goodchild continued: “We all know how hard everyone has been working this summer and the challenges that organisers have faced in terms of staff and supply chain. EBL not only allowed me to access some of the industry’s top suppliers, but it gave me a chance to network as an event organiser and discuss relevant and interesting topics through roundtables and panels. It was a great opportunity to build some strong partnerships for my business and the events I work on, so I recommend that people sign up for Event Buyers Live 2022.” Registration for the 2022 edition of Event Buyers Live [November 28-30] opens on August 1; it will be the event’s eighth outing and will welcome only 100 of the live event industry’s most respected organisers.
GILL TEE
Accompanying the 100 will be just 45 event suppliers and venues for networking and pre-qualified face-to-face meetings. Neil Fagg, co-founder of Event Buyers Live, said: “We are taking active steps to ensure Event Buyers Live is more inclusive. That means asking the right questions and finding out who our delegates represent; taking a snapshot of who is represented in the room but still delivering on our main goals. “The events industry is wonderfully welcoming, but I acknowledge that more can be done to increase diversity, and make people feel represented and included. Event Buyers Live was created to give events professionals the chance to sit down with each other and discuss project and procurement requirements. But
TIFFANY GASKELL it also provides events professionals with an opportunity to network and a platform for knowledge sharing in a professional and relaxed environment that encourages honesty and transparency.” Fagg continued: “I’m really excited for Event Buyers Live 2022. Having listened to audience feedback, we have some amazing new additions to the event that we will announce in the coming months. “For now, we encourage all events professionals with procurement needs for 2023 and beyond to register for the industry event of the year.” Registration for Event Buyers Live 2022 opens on August 1. Norway in the 2013 final in Sweden. However, this figure is likely to be beaten on July 31 when the 2022 final is played at Wembley Stadium. London is just one of nine locations chosen to host the football tournament, comprised of 31 games, with Manchester,
Milton Keynes, Brighton and Hove, Wigan and Leigh, Trafford, Southampton, Rotherham, and Sheffield also hosting matches. In fact, Sheffield’s Bramall Lane will host one semi-final on July 26 and MK Dons, Milton Keynes, will host the other semi-final on July 27.
In January 2022, Great Big Events won the contract to deliver the sport presentation and fan engagement programme of the UEFA Women’s Euro. The creative agency has been tasked with delivering full matchday experiences at each location, including activations on the “last kilometre” leading up to each stadium, as well as the spectator experience inside each venue. Ollie Hester, creative producer at Great Big Events, explained: “We’re delivering a far more holistic and integrated spectator experience for people in the stadium, right from when they step off the train.” Every element that Great Big Events produces – pre-match ceremonies, music, vision, and graphic content – must be “family friendly”, assuring the atmosphere is electric so that fans can get the most out of each match experience. Thousands of items are being given away on the “last kilometre” such as face paint sticks and clap banners and there are stilt walkers and live bands entertaining audiences too.

EVENT IMPACT
As StandOut writes, more than 500,000 tickets for the competition have been sold (compared to 240,000 tickets at UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 in the Netherlands), and all England games and the final are sold out. Prior to the tournament, The FA and UEFA released the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Pre-tournament Impact Report, confirming it’s on track to be the biggest women’s European sport event in history. The report, produced by EY, expects the competition to deliver £54 million in economic activity to the nine host cities. Furthermore, the host cities are expecting 96,000 international visitors from 95 territories and there will be engagement from fans from all over the world as the international broadcast audience could reach more than 250 million. Hester said that the public’s reaction to the FIFA Women’s World Cup was a huge catalyst and confirmed that UEFA has been proactively working to develop the game. EY intends to produce a “flash” report in the autumn of 2022 following the tournament to provide an initial indication of the impacts achieved and a full postevent impact study will be produced in the summer of 2023.
GROWING TRENDS
According to research by Statista, sport events revenue is projected to reach £4.91billion in 2022 and is expected to show an annual growth rate of 2.2 per cent, hitting £5.47 billion by 2027.
28 n www.glevents.co.uk
Deloitte’s 2022 Sports Industry Outlook highlights growing trends within the market, including the blending of real and digital worlds, non-fungible tokens (NFT), and the role that sport and sporting events can play in inspiring wellbeing, mental health, and sustainable choices. This opinion is bolstered by the University of South Pacific’s latest research [using the 2019 Pacific Games as an example] which concluded that large-scale sporting events can motivate attendees to live healthier and more environmentally sustainable lifestyles. Also, Hackney Moves, organised by LimeLight Sports Club, launched the first-ever half marathon NFT reward, and Wimbledon was recently immortalised in a new immersive 3D game, WimbleWorld on Roblox. These examples are demonstrative of the new moves being undertaken by organisers and event owners to engage fans and demonstrate innovation. However, it’s also clear that fans want to see event owners lead from the front by addressing sustainability.
SUSTAINABILITY
The Lawn Tennis Association’s (LTA) recently published Environmental Sustainability Plan states that 93 per cent of tennis fans want to see the LTA’s major events to demonstrate good sustainability practices and 85 per cent would like to see a reduction in waste and phase out of single use materials at LTA major events. The LTA, organiser of cinch Championships at The Queen’s Club, wishes to embed sustainability agreements into
contracts and would also like to eliminate the use of temporary power generators using fossil fuel by 2023 and reduce operational carbon emissions from major events by 75 per cent by 2030. Sustainability is a big issue being taken seriously by many organisers. For example, at The 150th Open, the contractor compound was powered by a solar farm and Bluewater installed a 16-metre-long hydration station, which housed 12 in-line water dispensers. Situated in the Spectator Village, it was designed to hydrate 290,000 golf fans attending the prestigious golf tournament. The “Wall of Water” alone had the capacity to purify and dispense more than 6,000 litres of water but it was supported on-site by an 18 additional, smaller hydration stations sited at strategic locations around the St Andrews venue. Bluewater was just one of the many contractors on-site at St Andrews, working on behalf of The R&A. Sunbelt Rentals, MTD, GL events UK, Secutix, Mitchell Bridges, Onsite Communications, Bunkabins, PTL, Mar-Key Group, PDQ Exhibitions, Production Bureau, G4S, and Arena Structures also provided extensive equipment and services to the tournament. For example, GL events UK provided 15,000 grandstand seats, 1,500 square metres of temporary structures, 39 television camera towers, and scaffold structures for two iconic yellow leaderboards, and Arena provided 93 temporary structures covering 36,500 square metres, including one tripledeck. In fact, Arena has delivered 30 per cent more kit to accommodate demand.

Arena’s triple-deck structure measures 15m x 85m and one of the double-deck structures is 145 metres in length. Ross Robertson, managing director (UK and Europe) of Arena Structures, explained: “The R&A has been building to this moment, The 150th Open, and there has been a huge demand for tickets. We’ve delivered 30 per cent more kit but the build time has remained the same. If you look across the course and what’s been achieved, it’s phenomenal.” Build began on April 25 and the project has required 53,000-man hours and 150 trucks of kit. As well as providing hospitality structures and entrances, Arena also created a huge shop, housed within a 30m x 70m structure and located within the Spectator Village. Previously, golf fans would visit the event for four days and perhaps, visit the shop once. Now, the event is balloted meaning that each day, a different set of golf fans attend The Open. Demand for merchandise has increased. Hence, the shop is 20 metres longer. Robertson continued: “Live engagement with sport is massive. The public demand, and crave, to be involved. Next year, will people be able to afford to go to highprofile sporting events? I think regular attendance at football matches will suffer but key events – such as The Open and Wimbledon – people want to be there.” Brian Martin, account director at Arena Structures, has project managed the delivery of Arena’s vast amount of infrastructure, reporting to Andy Duff, assistant director – championships at The R&A, organiser of the prestigious event.
30 n www.glevents.co.uk
ROSS ROBERTSON AND BRIAN MARTIN
St Andrews is a tricky site, open to the elements. Six days of the build were impacted by weather and whilst there were challenges during load in, Arena has delivered. Martin added: “We’re really good at delivering temporary structures. When you look at what we’ve built here, you just go ‘wow’. It’s too easy to look at the snagging list during the build and you’re thinking about a truck that hasn’t turned up yet. But
as events professionals, we forget to stop and look at what has been achieved in the same build time.” Robertson concluded: “I’m really proud to be putting structures out for The 150th Open and I am proud of what Arena has delivered. The Spectator Village is impressive, people will walk in the shop and never know they are in a tent, and the scale of the work and the timescale in which we have delivered is phenomenal.”

arFest, TRNSMT, LTA tennis at The Queen’s Club, Wireless, Creamfields, and The British Motor Show. They are all different events, but they have one thing in common. They are all sponsored by cinch, the online car marketplace, and many have adopted cinch’s colour palette and brand stamp. Is this demonstrative of good event branding or has cinch weakened these events’ identities? After a two-year hiatus, organisers are determined to make a statement and come back with a bang. But at what cost? Moving forward, will increasing production costs (which are showing no signs of waning) push organisers to consider non-traditional sponsorship deals next year or will organisers look to amplify their brand by investing in their event community and increasing customer engagement? According to both Charlie Busby, marketing manager at Visual Architects, and Rory Palmer Rowe, senior strategist at Mustard Media, events that connect to their audiences perform the strongest. Palmer Rowe said: “With the societal shift towards unique experiences and music festival line-ups becoming homogenised, branding is the only game left in town. It benefits promoters by creating a moat that protects them from the competition.
32 n www.eventbuyerslive.com
VISUAL ARCHITECTS Whilst for fans, the benefits are twofold. On a conscious level, branding is the creative platform that delivers these experiences they are seeking. Subconsciously, it speaks to our primal desire to belong.”
BOOST IMPACT
Event brands and owners are looking to engage their audience in new, visually spectacular ways and organisers are finding new ways to produce live events that surprise audiences, and that includes innovative event branding.
Visual Architects is seeing a higher demand for branded photo opportunities, and for bespoke interactive installations which include seating, lighting, and branded signage rather than simple backdrops. Busby said: “These photo opportunities are unique to the event, and can include foliage walls, swings, beach huts, and other structures, giving events the social media push they need to stand out against other brands.” Visual Architects is providing branding services to Kendal Calling. Imaginators is working
with Latitude, Reading and Leeds festivals, and InEvent Branding is now an official branding supplier to Great Run. Linzi King, managing director of InEvent Branding, commented: “We work alongside The Great Run Company’s marketing and operational teams on the start and finish line builds at all their major events. “This is the result of conversations and collaborations that have taken place over the last year. In May, we printed, built, installed, and delivered our first event start and finish lines for the Great Birmingham Run and Great Manchester Run, which was televised live on the BBC.” InEvent Branding was tasked with boosting the impact of the mass participation events’ start and finish gantries. Rob Pentland, event branding manager at The Great Run Company, explained: “InEvent’s professionalism and ability to deliver big projects has been critical in our ambition to improve the profile, look and feel of our events. Specifically, we tasked them with boosting the impact of the start and finish gantries at the Great Birmingham Run and Great Manchester Run and we have been very pleased with the end product. We look forward to working with InEvent for our flagship event, the Great North Run on September 11.”

BRANDING King said that organisers are looking for larger key pieces of branding. For example, at sporting events, larger structural and interactive elements are being introduced not just into the villages, start and finish lines but also onto courses. Scrim is slowly being replaced with barrier jackets at the start and finish line as they can be reused and offer a more aesthetically pleasing look for brands. Plus, important messaging can be seen on both sides. King continued: “Sustainability is becoming a major factor in the events industry and the two key words are recycle and reuse. We provide our clients with factual data sheets that show the true recycled values of substrates, their longevity and their footprint from raw material to recycle plant. We submit data sheets on request that show our energy use, product type, recycle value and carbon and energy footprint. We are actively looking for new facilities in the South to complement our existing facility in the North. This will help to reduce our carbon footprint and fuel costs.”
VISUAL ARCHITECTS
SUSTAINABILITY
Matt Tydeman, director of Imaginators, concurred. Sustainability is huge and is a key concern. Tydeman explained: “I’m encouraged to see sustainability and environmental impact are questions being asked more frequently and is a growing trend across both large and small events. During lockdown, we used the time wisely to research, develop and introduce new and exciting materials and now have a very wide range of environmentally friendly substrates and materials which are viable alternatives to the usual materials used within our industry. “We are always exploring new methods of production to improve our products and services. During 2022, we are expanding our LOOP Recycling Scheme – a unique recycling programme we introduced during 2019 to some key clients and we are now expanding this service to all clients. “After an event is finished and our branding is no longer required, in addition to Imaginators’ storage facility for future reuse, branded items produced and installed by Imaginators can be collected, pre-sorted, collated, and distributed for recycling as part of Imaginators LOOP Recycling Scheme.” Tydeman continued: “All our materials can be completely recycled and during 2022, we have already hit our target of 100 per cent landfill avoidance. We are understandably very proud of our scheme, which seems to have struck a chord and has been well received.” Tydeman said that he and his team are noticing how many live events, particularly music festivals, are hosting more than one event across multiple dates to take advantage of the infrastructure from
34 n www.eventbuyerslive.com
IMAGINATORS
INEVENT BRANDING one festival to be utilised by another. He added: “We’re used to this as we’ve often provided solutions which can switch from one event to another, but we are now providing branding solutions which are double rigged so that branding can be removed to reveal another set.” This is just one example of how event branding specialists are working with organisers to find solutions that make life easier, enable faster turnarounds, and extract value from infrastructure.
PLANNING
Tydeman described the current events marketplace as strong, driven by people wanting to return to normality and experience live events again. He added: “If I am honest, I was not expecting the
levels of work we have been experiencing – projects are large, complex, and often exploring new ideas and methods of production as live events and music festivals look to wow their audiences and engage with them in new, visually spectacular ways.” Like many event suppliers, Tydeman urged organisers to start their event branding planning early. He concluded: “You can’t start planning early enough, no matter what size your event. Working hard to keep in front of your plans for event branding is always important – sponsors, partners and brands often bring delays especially if left to the last minute. As an industry we seem to have become accustomed to solving problems at the last minute, but it needn’t be this way.”

LIVE AT THE PIECE HALL DURAN DURAN
Piece of my heart Cuffe and Taylor and The Piece Hall discuss Live at The Piece Hall, a new concert series that will put Halifax on the map
a local authority waxes lyrical W hen about a promoter and urges you
to have a conversation with them it’s wise to take their advice, right? Well, last summer, Nicky Chance-Thompson, CEO of The Piece Hall, visited Scarborough Open Air Theatre (SOAT) and did just that. Following a conversation with Scarborough Borough Council, ChanceThompson called Peter Taylor, co-founder of Cuffe and Taylor, which produces live events at SOAT. That meeting was last August, and now Cuffe and Taylor has entered into a five-year agreement with The Piece Hall to programme a series of live events that will put the heritage venue on the map. The first of eleven live shows took place on June 19 with the last one wowing audiences on July 10. What started out as a desire to create a series of concerts across four weekends soon grew, as high-profile artists confirmed mid-week availability. The opportunity to host Noel Gallagher and Duran Duran at The Piece Hall was too good to miss. “We got a call from Nicky in August last year,” explained Taylor, from the comfort of crew catering. “The venue wanted to do more gigs, had seen the work that we had done in Scarborough, and how did we feel about working together.
36 n www.eventbuyerslive.com
“I hopped in the car and drove to Halifax, and we did a deal the next day. We had to get on with it, it was August [2021]. I’d already booked most of my line up for 2022 and we had to hit the ground running.” Cuffe and Taylor waited until February to officially announce that it had secured an exclusive five-year deal to co-promote headline shows at The Piece Hall, a former Georgian cloth hall – which isn’t so much of a “hall” but a stunning Grade I listed courtyard flanked by independent shops and cafés. “We shared a vision,” said Chance-Thompson. “Cuffe and Taylor understood the space and understood that we’re a heritage venue with a strong tenant community. Gigs impact our tenants, but we had a meeting of minds.”
NO BRAINER
Just one week after the first meeting, Live at The Piece Hall’s first concert went on sale to the public. It was demonstrative of the trust that both parties had in each other. “There was no rhyme or reason, no planning, just a leap of faith,” continued Taylor. “They had trust that we were going to deliver.” But it wasn’t financially viable to do one gig. Cuffe and Taylor programmed eleven concerts. There was an aspiration to create a series.
Joe Robinson, director of operations at Cuffe and Taylor, said: “We knew that we wanted to create and build a summer series. The Piece Hall didn’t want to have mid-week gigs. They wanted shows from Thursday to Sunday but when Noel Gallagher was available but only on a Tuesday, they said: ‘OK, we’ll do a Tuesday’. When Duran Duran was available but only on a Tuesday, they said: ‘OK, we’ll do a Tuesday’. No shows on a Monday to Wednesday went out of the window; the calibre of artists was a no brainer.”
EASY AND GREEN
StandOut is sitting with Robinson, Taylor, and Daniel Cuffe, co-founder of Cuffe and Taylor, as Paul Weller prepares to wow crowds. It’s show seven and 5,500 people are entering the historic venue. It’s an intriguing site. “There are so many stakeholders in the building, we have to be sensitive to the fact that they have businesses to run,” Cuffe commented. “We had to get timings right – load-in times and sound checks – and because we had done that it enabled the trust to have proper conversations with stakeholders about the mid-week shows. Partnerships like this only work if everybody wins.”
LIVE AT THE PIECE HALL NICKY CHANCE-THOMPSON
DANIEL CUFFE, JOE ROBINSON AND PETER TAYLOR
The Piece Hall stays open to the public every day until 4.30pm and the site is managed by a team that includes Martin Clarke, production manager, and Ken Rankin, safety manager. Most of the infrastructure on site is permanent, so it’s one of the easiest to operate in terms of operations, and the lack of physical infrastructure that is required for this series means it is one of Cuffe and Taylor’s “greenest” shows. So, as the series hits show number seven, what lessons have been learned? “It’s seeing what the opportunities are rather than what lessons are to be learned,” commented Robinson. “Yes, there are always going to be things that come up that you navigate through, but we have lots of opportunity here. It’s more of a question of how we make the building shine more during the event.”
OPPORTUNITIES
According to Robinson, people love The Piece Hall and like coming to concerts because they are at The Piece Hall. And you can sort of tell that from the surrounding car parks. When the car parks are empty it means that everyone enjoying the gig is local. Only when the artist playing is more left field have the car parks been full, which demonstrates that people are willing to travel to this 5,500-capacity gig in Halifax.
Cuffe continued: “We’ve not made it easy for ourselves. We’ve got to take things up a level in 2023 and there is always going to be that expectation to deliver more. We may look at front of house designs for 2023 and leave the stage as it is, and in 2024, we may look at something else. We do know there are opportunities for hospitality, and we could offer pre and post-show packages.” Taylor added: “This year, we wanted to deliver a quality show for an audience, with a good line up and we now know we have a base, the audience will come, and we know the show works. The venue has been hands-on and have been great at event managing the shows, so we’ve been here in more of a promoter role.” Robinson said that The Piece Hall has a great event management structure and production manager in the shape of Clarke, which has allowed Cuffe and Taylor to be more “dynamic”. “We need to make it sound more dramatic,” Taylor laughs, as he ponders whether Live at The Piece Hall is one of the “easiest” shows it has produced. “Working on this event has been a huge contrast to everywhere else we’ve gone. This summer there have been some massive challenges in terms of supply chain. We came to some shows here last summer and had a great experience, so why change suppliers?”
SETTING THE BAR
NoNonsense Group, Digitall Comms, The Needs Group, HPSS, Controlled Spaces, and Blue Yonder have provided kit and services to the event, which is fully cashless. Clarke told StandOut that he only works with “nice people” because who you contract reflects on the final product. A successful event starts with that first introduction and that first conversation. “If you want to give your audience a good time, it starts with the artist. One level back from the artist, you have us and the welcome we give them. That’s also the people and contractors we fill this building with to deliver the shows.” Taylor has already booked eight of the artists for next year’s shows and discussions have started about the “opportunities” that could be pursued. Chance-Thompson concluded: “The Piece Hall is loved by the community, and it is owned by the community. I wanted to give them bands they wanted to see and not artists that promoters wanted to showcase. I think we have done that. “We’re all a bit tired by what we’ve produced but we’re energised by the reaction of our audience. This year will be hard to beat but we’ve set the bar high, and we’ll continue to deliver world-class artists in a world-class venue.”

LOVE SUPREME
Supreme moves Neapolitan Music’s Love Supreme increased capacity from 20,000 to 25,000, resulting in an expansion of the festival site
L
ove Supreme festival has grown in stature since it bounced onto the festival market in 2013. It has a loyal following; a discerning and returning audience of “real music fans” that value quality and have a certain level of expectation in terms of production. That’s why Mandy Johnson, U-Live’s head of operations, and Love Supreme’s head of production, has spent hours cherry picking kit that will work with the festival’s branding and colour palette. She is trying to raise the bar and come back with a bang, following the festival’s two-year hiatus. Johnson is talking to StandOut just days before gates open on the three-day jazz, funk, and soul festival. She’s “in the thick of it”. It’s raining but she is hard at work, perfecting the new site, which has an increased footprint (35 per cent larger) to accommodate an extra
“We’ve done a land grab,” Johnson continues. “The shape of the arena is the same but if you look at the GPS points, the stages and bars are not exactly in the same place but to our customers, it will feel familiar.”
ACHIEVING A BALANCE
5,000 guests and a huge glamping requirement. “Love Supreme is an intimate show,” Johnson says. “People like it. We attract experienced festivalgoers. Some other festivals sell themselves on the idea of exploration and that’s part of the festival experience and is critical to those kinds of events. Our customers like the
intimacy and accessibility of the site and that’s been a huge success factor for us.” Johnson has had to bear this in mind as the festival site has been developed to accommodate the increase in capacity. Love Supreme – owned by Neapolitan Music – has had to consider this point as it has grown.
Love Supreme 2022 benefits from a second Supremium glamping area – South Supremium now complements North Supremium. It houses 500 extra glamping tents, and the new area has direct access to Love Supreme’s main arena and South Downs stage. “I’m excited to see this work,” explains Johnson. “It’s been good to see demand for glamping go up so that we can introduce it. Plus, we’ve also been able to introduce more early morning wellbeing content. Before, we had yoga but now we have more of a programme.”
wwww.eventbuyerslive.com n 39
LOVE SUPREME
Johnson is mindful of the balance that Love Supreme must strike. It’s a camping festival that also sells lots of day tickets. However, what a camping customer and a day ticket customer want are different. Day ticket holders want buzz and to discover the entire festival in one day. Campers want space to breathe and have three days to explore the site. Therefore, important considerations have had to be given to the increased footprint and where key content is positioned. “Caburn Meadow is new for 2022,” Johnson continues. “It’s an area where campers can go for a walk and look at the amazing view that we have on the South Downs, especially for campers that might have had a late night and want to relax.
“Also, we have created a quiet campsite and placed it in a new field but to do that we have had to do some extensive groundworks to create two new access tracks; we put in some hard core and a load bearing culvert and we’ve used these tracks for the build.”
PRODUCTION VS CREATIVITY
Johnson is joined on-site by Heather McMillan, site manager, Charlotte Hammand, site coordinator, Emily Muirhead, technical production manager, Lizzie Lock, creative producer, and MC Hunter, event manager. The all-female operations team is working hard to deliver the festival, which has seen production costs increase by 40 per cent. Instead of

finding cheaper deals, the Love Supreme team has accepted the increased costs. No one requires the added pressure of finding new suppliers when there’s the added pressure of a redesigned and larger site. “We have given a lot of thought to the foundations of our festival, the things that make things easier for people; plenty of furniture to sit on, loos that are wellserviced, we have a strong food and retail offer, and good bar metreage,” Johnson concludes. “There must be attention to detail so that our customers can focus on the joy of being here. We’re very much a music festival and that’s why Love Supreme is well produced rather than overly creative and I can’t wait to see how guests react to the new changes.”

very year, Bournemouth 7s festival attracts 30,000 people and 400 sports teams to the south coast for a heady blend of sport and music. The festival is a mecca for rugby, netball, hockey, and dodgeball teams who travel to Chapel Gate for three days of sport and entertainment. “The medical injuries sustained at Bournemouth 7s are predominantly sportrelated but are sometimes quite severe simply due to the nature of contact sport and the eagerness of athletes to compete,” explained Paul Ashurst, event director of Bournemouth 7s. “Following the 2019 festival, we decided to go to market and do a full review of our medical provision. This was due to experiencing a couple of uneasy communications within our ELT meets from our previous provider, but mainly our desire to ensure that we provide the best our industry can offer and the finest medical care to our customers.” Bournemouth 7s appointed Enhanced Care Services, directed by Edward Langford, for the 2021 event. Ashurst continued: “ECS highlighted that there was room for
clinical improvements with a combined vision and drive. We worked together to essentially build a small hospital on site, with the shared objective to be able to deal with any major medical incident if required and reduce the impact on South Western Ambulance Service and local NHS services. “I think it’s also fair to say that having 2021 as the first year working together could have been overwhelming, but Ed and his team embraced the challenge and made it seem effortless. We all know how tough delivering events was last year, however coming in as a new supplier and delivering on all expectations is seriously impressive and why we were quick to partner with them for 2022.”
REDUCING PRESSURE
For 2022, Enhanced Care Services introduced a new system to B7s that had the ability to book patients directly into relevant treatment pathways directly from the Bournemouth 7s event site. Langford, managing director of Enhanced Care Services, explained: “On all large event sites, we install

a remote clinical advice line. It’s for all our first responders, paramedics, and clinicians to ring and get advice whilst they are on-site. For example, they could ring and say: ‘We have X patient, do you want us to take them to hospital or come back to the medical centre for a splint and extra care?” This year, Enhanced Care Services went one step further with medical care provision. Clinical staff had the option to book slots at urgent treatment centres and request x-rays/imaging. For example, if an attendee was injured on the pitch and had a suspected fractured/broken ankle, Langford or a member of his team could book an appointment at the hospital. The patient could be given pain relief and crutches, for instance, and could then get a taxi to the hospital in time for their appointment. Hospital appointments were made available to Enhanced Care Services, which had direct access to University Hospital Dorset’s system. Langdord said:“It meant we sent fewer people to the hospital and weren’t sending additional people to A&E, who would have to sit and wait until
they could be seen. It meant there were no extra queues at the hospital and the patient could continue to enjoy the festival before going to their appointment.” Ashurst continued: “The clinical level of cover that has been provided at Bournemouth 7s has been described by members of our core safety team as being better resourced than local A&E departments. As an organiser, it’s an amazing feeling having complete trust and being able to call upon professional guidance from experts that are truly passionate about providing the highest level of care.”
CHALLENGES
Enhanced Care Services’ system significantly reduced the festival’s impact on local NHS services, which remains under considerable pressure as COVID cases continue to rise. Dave Hawkins, CEO of MET Medical, told StandOut that the company is experiencing high demand for its services and there’s an increase in last minute requests, as some providers have over committed and event organisers are desperately trying to find cover for their event to go ahead.

EVENT MEDICAL COVER BOURNEMOUTH 7S
Hawkins said: “The pandemic has certainly changed the way we think about the risks of contamination and infectious diseases. Whilst we are learning to ‘live with COVID’, we are going to have further outbreaks and variants. We have taken the strategy to maintain the same controls at events that would be taken in hospital, and we have worked with our clients to consider all infectious diseases as part of a wider public health policy rather than just focussing on COVID. This has been brought to light recently with cases of monkeypox at an event.” The Government has recently issued monkeypox guidance relating to the planning of events and mass gatherings. This follows World Health Organisation and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control information given to public health authorities for use during summer events. It’s yet another pressure on the NHS. Hawkins commented: “Everyone is talking about challenges the NHS is facing in terms of increased pressures. The NHS Ambulance Service is under extreme pressure, meaning the likelihood of someone getting an ambulance in a reasonable amount of time, particularly where the individual is already being cared for is very low. “We have encouraged our customers to be proactive about this and our threshold to provide an ambulance conveying to hospital has shrunk. This has led to events which would only have had one paramedic present, for example, now needing two so that one can remain if a patient is conveyed. “The other key factor which indirectly affects the medical provision is the long handover delays being experienced at hospitals. When an ambulance takes a patient to A&E, they cannot leave until the patient’s care has been handed over to the hospital and if there aren’t any beds, that means the ambulance crew must stay and look after the patient in the
44 n www.enhancedcareservices.co.uk
MET MEDICAL
corridor or back of the ambulance. This might mean that where an event has one ambulance on standby to hospital and one or two patients conveyed a day, an additional ambulance would be justified as it is more than likely if the ambulance leaves, then the crew might not make it back before the end of their shifts. “By working closely with larger clients to ensure their large events or sporting events have considered these factors, we are finding the availability of access to care can end up being even better on an event than it is in the community.”
PLAN AHEAD
In October 2019, British Red Cross announced that it would no longer be providing medical cover at events. This has led other charitable organisations becoming overwhelmed. Furthermore, some first aid only providers, which are not regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) are no longer trading due to the impact COVID had on their businesses.
Currently, the delivery of medical provision at an event falls outside of regulation in the eyes of CQC. The only element which requires the provider to be regulated is the transport of patients to hospital. Some unregulated providers are still operating and can provide medical cover. However, they will either outsource the element of transport to a regulated provider or they will put ambulances at the event. It is only when a patient needs to go to hospital that they disclose to the event manager that they cannot convey beyond the gate. In a recent statement, the chief executive of the CQC remarked that he does intend for the events sector to become regulated, but no time indication was given. In the meantime, Hawkins urged organisers to heed the following advice: “Plan ahead. Lots of event organisers are leaving medical provision to the last minute and in the current market as well as a general shortage of healthcare professionals, you should be looking at planning at least 12 months ahead.”

HILLHEAD
Digging deep Harvey Sugden, event manager of Hillhead, walked StandOut through site developments just under 18,500 unique visitors, W ith Hillhead 2022 proved to be one of
the busiest and best-attended shows in the event’s 40-year history. After a four-year gap, it was important that QMJ Group, organiser of the quarrying, construction, and recycling trade show, blasted out the gates with new developments that would cement the event’s return. “Our last show was in 2018,” explained Harvey Sugden, Hillhead’s event manager. “We were well on with our planning for 2020 when COVID struck. We regrouped quickly and announced dates for 2021 and then that didn’t happen. In 2018, we knew that our 2020 show was going to be bigger, and so we continued with our plans, riding the wave of 2018, which was a bumper show.” Taking place in a limestone quarry in Derbyshire, Hillhead 2022 featured several site developments, including a larger show floor, a level show floor, larger
46 n www.eventbuyerslive.com
exhibitor and registration pavilions [a 20m x 80m structure and a 20m x 75m], new sustainability measures, and sitewide hard-wired fibre-optic broadband. The new solution delivered three times the bandwidth provided at the last event, increasing capacity from 300mb to more than a gigabit. The new moves were essential, especially as construction technology is a growing trend. Richard Bradbury, event director of Hillhead, said that application of digital tools in quarrying and construction was increasingly prevalent. Therefore, it was important that Hillhead enabled exhibitors to showcase the latest technology available to the industry. Hillhead’s investment in fibre allowed exhibitors to book more powerful Internet packages at a lower cost than before and free Wi-Fi hotspots were available around the site for visitors.
“It’s been a big job,” said Sugden. “In 2014, Max Wifi installed a satellite solution for us but then we discovered there was fibre optic in the village down the road. Now, we have fibre laid across the site and we’ve been digging ducts at a rate of knots so that the team could lay the fibre.”
COSTS AND CONTRACTORS
Most of Hillhead’s developments have been “cosmetic” – a reshaped and expanded site has required a new fenceline, and the quarry floor which had a gradient has been levelled. This has made the show’s build easier. Sugden continued: “I have been event manager at Hillhead since 2016 and I inherited a steady ship. We have lots of contractors in place and for a show of this size, you need continuity. Our contractors know our site well, so we don’t change them lightly or quickly but this year we have had to out of necessity.
HILLHEAD “For example, our cleaning contractor didn’t make it through the pandemic, so we have new cleaners and new caterers too.” Hillhead’s operations team is small. Sugden is assisted on-site by Bradbury and Abi Smith, assistant event manager. There’s a showground team and a quarry team, each taking responsibility for their section of the show, which includes 30,000 tonnes of quarry stone that was blasted for equipment demonstration purposes at this year’s event. To prep the site, Sugden has had a 75-tonne and a 35-tonne excavator on-site for three weeks; sometimes drinking 500 litres of fuel per day. It’s huge cost. “Fuel is a massive cost for us this time round,” Sugden added further. “Fuel for power is one thing but our biggest cost is fuel for the machines that prepare our site. It’s a lot of money.”
LOOKING AHEAD
HARVEY SUGDEN
Hillhead has tried to save money by powering the main indoor exhibition areas on HVO. It’s just one sustainability measure that has been implemented at the event. Single-use plastic is also off the menu at vending and catering areas, recycling points have been increased, and the organiser has promoted car sharing because the event site is not easily accessible via public transport. But it’s something that Sugden and Bradbury are looking at for 2024. “We’re always thinking ahead and we’re always looking to grow,” said Sugden. “We looked at providing shuttle buses this year from Buxton train station, but we just couldn’t make it work. But it’s on the radar and we’d like to do it for our next show and broaden our use of HVO. Also, we are looking at installing some electric charging points for cars in our car parks.” For the first time, this year’s show build was time-lapsed. The resulting footage will enable Sugden and the team to identify where efficiencies can be made for Hillhead 2024. Sugden concluded: “People who regularly visit Hillhead will notice the changes and the show’s size and scale. We’ve gone up a notch again and I am really pleased that we have been able to represent our industry and that we’re back after four years.” Hillhead will return on June 25-27, 2024.

Seeing red and turning green Event power experts discuss the current state of the marketplace, new products, contract wins, and best practices

n June, Festival Republic – the organiser of Download and Latitude – unveiled details of a research project with Music Declares Emergency. The research will look at the logistics of connecting more UK festivals to the national power grid, reducing the need to run generators on event and festival sites. Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, called the project a “game changer for outdoor live events”, reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and enabling promoters to produce more sustainable events. Festival Republic hopes that the research project will provide some answers so it can run fully renewably powered, grid-connected stages at three events in 2023. Plus, it wants to share the findings and help other organisers to follow suit. Grid power is a growing trend. Promoter Cuffe and Taylor is looking at grid power

solutions and Agrekko is working with the organising committee of Birmingham 2022 to adopt a “mains first” approach. Where temporary energy is needed, Aggreko is providing 117 Stage V generators from 30kVA up to 600kVa running on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
RENEWABLE POWER
MHM PLANT
Festival Republic has confirmed that this year’s Reading and Leeds will be powered by 100 per cent HVO biofuel – a renewable form of fuel that has 90 per cent less carbon equivalent emissions than regular diesel. All Points East will run on HVO too. Since the events industry was banned from using red diesel and rebated biofuels on April 1, organisers have been shocked by the impact that increasing fuel prices have had on their production costs. Therefore, more organisers are turning to alternative power sources.
www.stuartpower.co.uk n 49
POWER For example, the contractor compound at The 150th Open was powered by a solar farm and this year’s HebCelt was powered by locally produced green hydrogen. The Islands Stage in the main arena area used zero-emissions energy for three days and nights, powering 12 different acts. It was the first festival in Scotland to run a full stage consecutively for the duration of an event on green hydrogen, which was produced from surplus electricity produced by local onshore wind renewable power. PlusZero, a Harris-based clean power start-up, was the festival’s power provider and the evolution of the festival’s green power options was made possible through EventScotland’s National Events Programme. “HebCelt has always been committed to finding ways to lessen our carbon emissions and to have an environmentally sensitive event,” explained Caroline Maclennan, HebCelt’s festival director. “To be able to make this significant step, which saw truly green energy used for one of our stages throughout the festival, was very welcome. The fact that we can source the power from a local provider who in turn is using renewable energy in the production process made this development even more attractive.”
IDE SYSTEMS
HYBRID POWER SOLUTIONS
SEEING A SHIFT
This year, Glastonbury’s Pyramid, Other, Park and West Holts stages were powered by HVO, electric vehicles transported artists between stages and the festival’s office and some production areas were powered by a 1,500 square metre solar PV array and an anaerobic digester. It was not the only festival to adopt new moves. We Love Green used a mix of solar panels, green hydrogen generators, and biofuel generators to power the three-day event. Bradley Ireland, group sales director, at MHM Group, said that there is a desire within the events industry to become more eco-friendly. Bhavisha Fatania, marketing manager at IDE Systems, agreed. Fatania said: “The red diesel ban has led to increased fuel costs for event companies. The increased cost has refocussed events on reducing fuel consumption, which has led to enquiries on how Erica, our power monitoring and control tool, can assist events in reducing fuel consumption. “Event organisers are very focused on ensuring their event is sustainable. Electric vehicle chargers are amongst the many requests we receive. Event organisers have seen the shift to electric vehicles and wish to cater to this market.”
NEW TECH AND REDUCE USAGE
MHM Group has recently launched a 10kva Ultra-Silent Event Ready generator, which consumes less fuel. The Ultra-Silent range is available with Stage V engines in sizes from 10kva to 500kva and the company has also increased its Solar Hybrid Battery Diesel Generator range, which is now available with Stage V engines from 3.5kva all the way up
50 n www.stuartpower.co.uk
to 100kva and have the option of additional solar panel kits. Jim Brown, general manager of Pearce Hire, concurred that the deployment of battery systems is playing a bigger role this year, reducing generator run time via hybrid set ups. The temporary power provider is trying to find ways to help clients reduce pressure on budgets, but market conditions are tough. Brown explained: “With fuel having roughly doubled in cost, we have had to ask our clients for fuel deposits. In the past, when the cost was at a lower level, we could tolerate waiting to be paid but we can’t expose ourselves to that risk anymore. “Our clients are understandably looking to us to reduce usage as much as possible to try and reduce fuel costs for them. The upside with this is that the environmental improvements in generator provision, new and more sustainable technologies (and other aspects) which didn’t necessarily make economic sense to our clients a year or so ago, do make sense now. These reduce fuel use, and therefore emissions, and hopefully make fuel costs more manageable. Having said that it is disappointing, and frustrating for us, that there is no attempt to incentivise
HVO usage. We know that this is the quickest way of improving an existing diesel generator fleet’s environmental performance until new technology arrives.”
DRIVE RADICAL CHANGE
When the red diesel ban was introduced in April, Pearce Hire expected to see a push from organisers to reduce their fuel usage to try and minimise the increase in fuel costs, but no one could have foreseen how the market conditions have changed since then. The ban on red diesel and staggeringly high white diesel costs will drive radical change. “The ban couldn’t have come at a worse time for the events industry,” said Alex Macan, technical and operations director at Progen Power. “COVID all but decimated many events and required many companies to dip into their financial reserves to ensure their survival. To enforce a ban on red diesel that doubled the fuel bill of all events just at the time when these companies were just getting back on their feet wasn’t a welcome move. Fortunately, many of the clients we work alongside had been anticipating this for a while, and adequate planning had been made to enable us to work with them to roll out full HVO across their sites.”

POWER PROGEN POWER
Pearce Hire will be providing power services to All Points East, Deer Shed, and Cambridge Folk Festival this summer, and is currently on tour with Michael Buble. Progen, which provided power to Download Festival in June, is now prepping for MotoGP at Silverstone. Macan said: “Progen Power began operating properly in February this year. We didn’t want to go too wild in our first year. We began with a little-known festival in Leicestershire called Download! The team then moved on to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and in a few weeks’ time, we’re heading back to Silverstone to help power the MotoGP. “When we started out on this journey, we had no idea that we would end up being the main provider of temporary power solutions for some of the UK’s major events. We had weddings and parties in mind but the support from our clients has been fantastic.”
CHALLENGING MARKET
In April, Festival Republic approached Progen Power to work on Download, having found itself without a power supplier. Historically, power at the festival has been provided by one supplier but given the timescale, it was not possible to find one supplier which had enough kit or crew to deliver the project in its entirety. Progen Power worked alongside Sunbelt Rentals to ensure the site was fully covered. Sunbelt took the stages and arena infrastructure and Progen Power powered the bars, concessions, and campsites. Macan continued: “We have added some exciting products to our inventory over the last few months. We have a fleet of the very latest Stage V 18kVa generators, which can be linked together and used to provide a load on demand
52 n www.stuartpower.co.uk
system. We have also added more than 70 new custom distribution boards, which allow great flexibility to our customers in terms of socket outlets, and we continue to be well supported by JCB. We currently have some of their new Stage V products on test.” But what advice would Macan give to organisers that are struggling with power this year? “My main advice having seen the number of event organisers being let down is to do your due diligence. Ensure suppliers actually have the equipment they have promised. So many of the middlemen are being let down by their ‘trusted’ suppliers currently and it’s hugely important for the solvency of your business that you can ensure the availability of the equipment and the crew to undertake your project. “This is why we are positioning ourselves to rely on rehires as little as possible. It wouldn’t be good business practise to own absolutely everything, but equally it’s not good business practise to own barely anything and advertise yourself as a temporary power provider. “My second piece of advice is to be understanding that everyone is suffering the same shortages of equipment and personnel, lead times on new equipment are huge and many good people have moved into other jobs and industries. Everyone is doing their best under difficult circumstances, so be nice.” Brown concurred: “If you talk to us early and give us information early (even if it is only a starting point) we can design systems to ensure they are fitfor-purpose and as efficient as possible. This includes finding out what the actual power requirements are; making system recommendations to minimise demand and once we’ve done all that to correctly size our generators solutions to fit.
PEARCE HIRE “We will do everything we can to help clients reduce fuel bills. Reducing engine sizes and running times is key to this, sometimes the biggest win on a site can be a mains supply which either no-one has thought of using before, or which needs a relatively simple upgrade to meet some of the power requirements for the event.” Brown concluded: “At the end of the day, our clients expect us to turn up; ensure power is on at the right places and is safe; make sure the power stays on during the gig; and get it out of there without damaging anything. We’re not re-inventing the wheel – just trying to make it roll along a bit better every time we do it.”

Make a pledge Betternotstop’s new More Than Music report shines a spotlight on festival sustainability
H
ave you wondered what other organisers are doing to make their events more sustainable? Well, thanks to a new report from betternotstop, you can easily explore the social and environmental policies of 100 UK music festivals. The report – entitled More Than Music – identifies those festivals that are “leading the charge”. However, of those 100 sampled, only 25 per cent have public commitments to a sustainability policy, charity donations, and carbon balancing measures. It’s a surprising statistic because six out of ten festivalgoers believe that festivals have a duty to reduce their waste and nearly half of millennials think the primary objective of a business should be contributing positively to society (social and environmental). The More Than Music report is for anyone – whether you work in production or sit at board level. There’s information for everyone, so if you are interested in knowing exactly how Shambala’s food and drinks policy supports its climate reduction targets, or perhaps how Standon Calling is

supporting increased representation in the music industry, then it’s a must read. Wild Paths, Green Man, Lytham Festival, Victorious, Parklife, Boardmasters, Bluedot Festival and Kendal Calling were some of the festivals included in the research, which highlights best practice and provides food for thought. This year, betternotstop has partnered with Kendal Calling to deliver its new Sustainability Impact Strategy for 2022. The 35,000-capacity festival already supports numerous charities, both local and national, and has a huge impact in the community, and it is also committed to a range of sustainability measures, including banning single-use plastic bottles on site, and converting all lights to LEDs. However, From the Fields, organiser of Kendal Calling, wished to create an overarching strategy and develop an effective campsite and waste management action plan. Betternotstop has been working with Kendal Calling [July 28-31] on launching a Leave Nothing but Memories Campaign, recruiting a campsite crew team dedicated
to raising awareness of litter picking initiatives in the campsites and collecting data about audience behaviours, and empowering traders, suppliers, artists, and the audience to take more responsible, sustainable decisions and commit to a “Trader Pledge” to reduce their environmental impact. Kendal Calling is focused on reducing the total tonnage of tent and campsite waste left over after the festival. Andy Smith, director of Kendal Calling, said: “It’s been a great opportunity to work alongside betternotstop and develop an action-driven plan about how to improve our social and environmental impact at the festival. We are really excited to welcome our Kendal Callers back to the stunning surroundings of Lowther Deer Park for the first time in three years. We are certain that the initiatives betternotstop are helping us to deliver will create a lasting legacy for the festival.” To download a copy of the More Than Music report, visit www.betternotstop.com
