rom this month hair and beauty professionals from around the country will descend on some of the UK’s biggest trade shows to discover the latest launches for AW13.

Kicking off the proceedings is Olympia Beauty (22-23 September), which has become a springboard for the new season and a reliable hotspot for finding the latest beauty innovations. From nailcare, sunless tanning and hair removal services to companies offering serious skincare breakthroughs, we reveal why it’s a mustattend event for all salon owners on page 36. Meanwhile, we’ve also shone the spotlight on some key brands and stands to look out for at this year’s show on page 44.

But this issue isn’t just about trade shows or events. As usual we’ve also been on the hunt for the latest in-salon services and treatments that promise to attract clients and yield a high profit at the same time.

Eyelash and eyebrow grooming services have become one the biggest rising beauty stars of the past few years. Since lash extensions hit the market almost a decade ago, consumers have been increasingly interested in enhancing their eyes. Moreover, since HD Brows landed on the scene in 2008, we’ve seen a surge in beauty brands offering unique treatments that lead to perfect lashes and eyebrows. In fact, many salon owners

have reported that both areas have joined nailcare and waxing to become one of their ‘bread and butter’ services. Goldwell names Color Zoom UK 2013 winners at celebratory party inside its London academy

G

oldwell announced the winners of its Color Zoom 2013 competition last month at a celebratory finalists awards party.

Held inside its recently opened Central London academy, the brand spruced up the venue to echo the competition’s ‘Beautify’ theme using ornate flower displays, pretty ice cream coloured furniture, a mint green ‘red carpet’ and well-dressed waiting staff who carried (and wore) eye-catching serveware.

Guests – which included those that had made the UK leg of Color Zoom 2013’s

final cut – sipped cocktails and tucked into canapés before the hair company announced the names of its UK winners.

This year entrants had to interpret the global brand’s SS13 Beautify Collection – which fuses unconventional colours combinations with unexpected cuts – by submitting their own photographic look. A handful of finalists for each category were then sent to an international judging panel in Germany, which selected the winners.

Those achieving first place in the competition’s three categories were Paul Scully from Scully Scully in Surrey for Partner Colorist UK Winner, Osman Yakubogullari of Maidstone’s So

Hairdressing for Creative Colorist, and Sarah Moore from Anthony John Salons in Lichfield for New Talent Colorist.

This year marks the second Color Zoom triumph for Osman Yakubogullari, who was also named New Talent Colourist in 2012. He comments: “The competition was extremely tough this year. I’m now excited for the finals and I’ll do anything to bring the global title back to the UK!” All three will join Goldwell’s international Color Zoom winners in Los Angeles next month for the Global Challenge for a chance to become a member of the International Color Zoom Creative Team 2014.

Salon social Joico’s European design team member Daniel Granger was selected to work alongside the Precious About Make-Up Team at last month’s International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) in London. The stylist demonstrated how Joico products could be used to create various screenworthy styles to the event’s attendees.

Royal Warrant holder Kent Brushes was one of 200 brands invited to exhibit at The Coronation Festival in Buckingham Palace Gardens.

During the four-day event, which was attended by the key members of the royal family, the brand showcased brushes created over its 236-year history alongside past images of the factory and team.

The Fellowship selected its new ClubStar Art Team last month at live auditions in London and Manchester. Twenty-four finalists battled it out for six places by presenting their work to a panel of judges.

The young stylists making the grade include Rom Sartipi from Percy and Reed and Tazmyn Dambrauskas of London’s Brooks and Brooks.

Hair by JFK raised £500 for The Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home recently after selling a calendar starring its clients’ four-legged friends. The initiative was such a success that the salon team ran a competition for the 2014 calendar to find the Next Top Dog Model. The new calendar will go on sale at the end of this year to raise more funds for the cause.

A 21-year-old beauty therapist from Cambridge was awared with a Medallion for Excellence at last month’s WorldSkills 2013 competition in Leipzig, Germany.

Katie Wright, who trained at Cambridge Regional College, missed out on the bronze medal by just four points beating 17 other countries around the world by as much as 100 points.

Face furniture Why professional lash and brow services have become must-have staples on the salon beauty menu

“T

he stronger brow is the new smoky eye,” heralded Terry Barber, director of MAC makeup artistry, after AW13’s fashion weeks.

And his declaration cemented something that us in the beauty trade have seen unfolding for the past few seasons: brows are huge now – and in more ways than one.

Back in 2008, HD Brows hit the market transforming the way that British consumers thought about their eyebrows.

And following their lead, a growing number of brands have introduced their own systems that cater for the growing demand for the power brow.

Forget over-plucking hangovers from the previous decade: today’s professional salon treatments promise to help clients fake their way into returning their natural brows to their former glory.

We have dedicated lash and brow salons cropping up on the high street in the same way that nail bars emerged in the ‘90s. Along with their manicures and pedicures, clients are booking in for instantly gratifying lash and brow treatments that aim to emulate the look of certain international models.

“I think the UK in recent years has seen a growing interest in overall grooming,” says Shavata Singh, founder of Shavata Brow Studios, which operates 21 branches nationwide. “Clients are getting regular manicures, pedicures and blowdrys, which are all becoming a part of people’s beauty routines. Brow grooming naturally falls into this, and 2013 has seen even more of an interest in brows in particular due to the popularity of Cara Delevingne and the trends on this year’s catwalks.”

The eyebrow entrepreneur has seen her business grow into a £3.5 million enterprise since launching her first concession in Harrods. She says the service is so popular because it offers results in a small amount of time. “I call it

the ‘brow wow’ factor,” she says. “For me, every client is my most important client, so all my staff are trained to the highest standard and customer service is one of the most important components to my business. I think it is this level of service that customers expect, and is what keeps them coming back.”

Likewise, Nilam Patel, co-founder of HD Brows, believes that savvier clients are shaping the industry of expertly grow eyebrows. “Gone are the days where clients came in looking for a quick wax and tint,” she says. “They’re now looking to learn how they can achieve the look for themselves as part of their daily routine.

The beauty industry is one that has always grown and that is because it has had to evolve and diversify to meet consumer needs.”

A love of lashes But it’s not only eyebrows that have

entered the spotlight in recent years. Just before that, eyelashes were taking over other treatments as the golden child of the beauty industry with the launch of extensions, new curling services and more recently, semi-permanent mascara.

“Years ago we had all heard of lash tinting and lash perming, but when the lash enhancements were developed to incorporate extensions, semi permanent mascara and express lashes, this segment really started booming,” says Britta Krueger, founder of Beautytrix, which offers a range of lashes brands including Flirties and Xaggerate. “Salons confirm that lashes and nails are now the bread earner when years ago it was nails, tanning and waxing.”

The blame game It’s vital that salon owners keep insurance policies up-to-date to avoid being faced with disastrous consequences, says The Business Octopus’s Leanda Hickman

T

he UK salon market is booming. With over 23,000 hair and beauty businesses employing over 135,000 staff, the industry is vital to the UK’s economy.

And as a result of the expanding range of treatments available and the continuing trend for both women and men to look after themselves, the future looks bright for the entire sector. However, one area of increasing complexity for all business owners including those working in the salon trade is that of insurance and protecting their growing business.

Taking some time to evaluate their current business insurance could be one of the best investments salon owners ever make. It is vital to keep insurance policies up-to-date so when you do have to make a claim, you are not faced with rejections and a significant claim or legal bill to pay, which could be disastrous.

Every business owner is presented with risks at every twist and turn they take and these can be both in and out of their hands. Think back to a few years ago and immediately we can highlight two instances that any business owner would have struggled to prevent – the riots of 2011 where £200 million of direct claims were made and in 2006 when flooding caused over £3 billion worth of damage.

However, there are other known risks that can be avoided. And ignoring these potential threats is at the peril of any salon owner.

There are certain instances that are obvious to any savvy business owner.

For example, ensuring all therapists and hairdressers are qualified in the services they are offering is essential for most policies to be valid, as is making sure that they’re the correct age to carry them out in the first place. However, even if they hold the right credentials, there can still be claims made against them in the salon.

One scenario is an insurance claim being made against a beauty salon after a customer received a bikini wax. The therapist was fully qualified and had 15 years’ experience with bikini waxing as an everyday part of her job. The customer had received a waxing treatment before

and in the same salon so they were aware of the procedure. While the therapist was completing the treatment, they noticed the customer’s skin was becoming tender and advised that it was best not to continue.

But the client was very insistent that the therapist did continue, and to avoid

BUSINESS upsetting the regular client, the bikini wax was finished to her requirements.

Unfortunately, the customer returned the next day to tell the salon that she had to visit the hospital that evening for stitches due to bleeding from the waxing treatment. The customer then proceeded to threaten the salon staff with a legal claim against its alleged professional negligence. The claim was settled two years later with approximately £7,000 compensation being awarded to the client.

On this occasion, the salon had the correct business insurance cover, which was designed to protect the salon owner or worker and/or the product being used.

However had the salon not been covered correctly, this would have been costly – and even detrimental – to the business.

Of course treatments are not the only area of risk. A simple issue like not displaying a sign to show there is a step inside the entrance to your salon is a AVEDA

hazard and could cause an accident. If this isn’t marked clearly, it could lead to any claim being refused by your insurer.

An example of such a claim being refused happened to one spa that had a single step leading from the reception area towards their treatment rooms. Over a period of three months, two customers tripped and fell. And although they both refused help at the time, the spa received a notice of court proceedings a few months later. Liability insurance cover is designed to help you in the event of a claim of this nature against your business, however you need to comply with the Health and Safety regulations and any policy wording and expectations.

If you are a business owner and want to protect your livelihood, checking your business insurance is essential for financial protection and peace of mind. Remember, a claim can be made against your business, yourself or your employees at

Look at everything you use to do your job and then check your policy to make sure they are covered should they be lost or stolen • Check your level of public liability cover, if you can afford to pay a little more on your insurance maybe it could be a good idea to increase the level of cover – it might not be as expensive as you think • Do you have the relevant health and safety signage displayed correctly within your working area for customers to see? A claim could be refused if you haven’t adhered to requirements in law or in your policy • Are your staff members covered for all eventualities and are they qualified in the treatments they are performing? Also, don’t forget that Employer’s Liability is a legal requirement even if you employ part time staff

any time, so having the right cover for the type of treatments you perform, the stock and equipment you use and any premises you may occupy all needs to be accurate.
