very year, the summer season seems to be abruptly forgotten as the aisles fill with tubs of Celebrations and Christmas decorations, however seeing the festive spirit quickly creep in does seem to stir an abundance of excitement in me. I start looking at dates for my local Christmas market to pencil in my diary and find myself sub-consciously screenshotting presents for my wish list. It’s only when you take a step back, you realise the consumer influence and positive effect on business is the reason why shops start pushing Christmas so early. Salons should take a leaf out of their book, and that’s why our extensive Christmas section is advising you on how to take advantage of the holiday season to boost sales, the right time to sound your jingle bells to attract customers and the allimportant organisation before the rush. As the Christmas magic builds, clients are more inclined to treat themselves and others, so our extensive Nails feature explores how to create luxury treatments that work in line with this and increase revenue. We also invite you to come along with me to TOWNHOUSE Victoria, the nail salon chain on everyone’s lips right now as their popularity has led to further expansion outside of London! TikTok videos of consumers transforming their hair from frizz to bouncy curls have have led to a growing community seeking to enhance the natural texture of their hair, discovering new beauty in their natural hair when using the right products and guidance. With embracing natural curls on the rise, we explore how your salon can stand out with a specialist, offering expert advice to deliver the best results to a growing curly hair community. As ever, these trend-inspired features are accompanied by our much-sought after regular pieces, with Skin Loft starring as our Salon of the Month and Georgia Louise sharing her journey to success as our Rising Star. New Beginnings One of the leading lash and brow suppliers, Lash Factor, have officially rebranded to Lab Factor, and we’ve got all the details in an exclusive interview with the team!

Lash Factor is renowned as the UK’s premium lash and brow supplier. How did the brand grow to gain this recognition? We pride ourselves on staying at the forefront of the lash and brow industry and delivering an unbeatable service to our shoppers. For us, customer satisfaction is one of our top priorities, and we believe this is a key reason as to why we’ve built our reputation and gained such a wonderful, loyal customer base. We make sure to listen to our customers, which is why we’re always rolling out new products and stocking the latest brands. It’s not easy to find time in the day to research new

@thesalonmaguk

Salon Magazine

techniques and products, as well as find a supplier and that’s why we’re here; a one-stop shop for techs to purchase their supplies to save time and stay at the top of their game!

What inspired you to rebrand Lash Factor?

When our CEO, Angelina, started Lash Factor in 2016, she set it up with the intention of selling lash supplies to other lash extension techs. However, seven years later, we’ve not only massively expanded our lash range (incorporating lash lifts), we’ve also fully ventured into brows. So, despite the name Lash Factor, brow techs can purchase everything they need from us! This is why we realised it

PROMOTION

was time for a change; we love brows just as much as lashes and wanted to reflect this to our customers, so LAB Factor was born (with LAB standing for lash and brow).

For Lash Factor, why was it important to develop and keep up with the latest trends? We’re constantly thinking about how we can deliver the best service to our customers, which is why we’re always expanding our brand and product range and thinking of other ways that we, as a company, can support lash and brow techs. As well as sourcing new brands, we’re also fortunate enough to also be approached by many! For us, the whole shopping experience is just as important as the brands and products we sell. This is why a rebrand was necessary for us to truly reflect what we’re about. Not only that, but the rebrand comes along with a shiny new website for a better overall

user experience (restocking supplies shouldn’t be painful)!

How will the rebrand benefit customers?

Not only will the new website be more user-friendly, thanks to advanced filtering options and more comprehensive brand pages, but we’ve been working on some major perks! Our new customer loyalty programme means our shoppers can earn points on purchases, which can be redeemed on future orders. It’s one of the ways we can reward our customers for their incredible loyalty. We’ll also be rolling out an exclusive affiliate programme for selected lash and brow artists.

Will the rebrand change the products? Not at all! Another reason for this rebrand was to create more of a distinction between our own brands, Lash Factor and Brow Factor, and the Salon Magazine

website as a whole. We want it to be fully clear that we’re an online stockist of many, many brands, including our own. Therefore, while our name will be changing from Lash Factor, we’ll very much be keeping (and expanding) the Lash Factor range of products. Not to mention, customers can still expect a whole host of industry-leading brands!

Are there any other exciting developments that are working alongside the rebrand?

Yes! We recently held our first in-person event in Birmingham, The Lash and Brow Event, and we’re keen to hold more events in the future. We also have other exciting plans in the pipeline, but that’s all I can say right now, so watch this space! Visit labfactor.com for all your lash and brow supply needs and to shop exclusive brands, such as ÉLAN, Brow Code, Bronsun, Mayamy, Brow Bible and Perma Lift!

RISING STAR

A Bright Future Hair Stylist, Georgia Louise, features as this month’s Rising Star, sharing advice on overcoming obstacles, having your talent recognised and how to make the most out of Instagram marketing.

What inspired you to pursue a career in hair?

Before I started my career in hairdressing, I tried university and office jobs, but soon realised that my creative spark meant that I didn’t enjoy being sat in a 9-5 job. I’ve always enjoyed creating hair styles on my friends’ and family’s hair, which inspired me to kick-start a career in it. Colouring and styling came naturally to me, whereas cutting hair, especially shorter styles, was an area I needed to improve on. I’d never go back now; I am a hairdresser for life!

How did you find your style, and what are your tips for other professionals trying to stand out?

I think finding your style comes with time and you can’t rush it. Make sure you are always evolving your skillset as new trends emerge. For me, social media has had a huge impact on my education: from these platforms I’ve learnt new skills and trends. The majority of my clients ask for a balayage and I think this is majorly influenced by social media. Your style

also develops depending on who you are working with, as you constantly pick up new tricks from your peers. Most importantly, just make sure you are doing what you love, as no passion means no quality in your work.

What has been the biggest obstacle in your career so far and how did you overcome this? As I was finishing my Level 2

16

qualifications, we were just coming out of lockdown. Due to the pandemic, lots of small businesses had gone bust and the salon I was working at was in a really difficult situation with money. I had a meeting with the owner and we discussed what this meant for me. I could either carry on and pro-long my qualification, take a pay cut and work as a helper washing hair, or find a job in a different salon. At the time, with the impact of the financial crisis, I felt like I’d

RISING STAR

never make it in the hairdressing sector. I decided to message as many salons in the area as I could. This is where I found Avalily, who took me on as their Level 3 stylist. I overcame nearly leaving the hairdressing industry, built a portfolio and sold myself. I made sure the salon knew that I was driven, and how much I wanted this career.

How did you get your talent noticed, and what advice would you give to someone trying to grow their client base?

My talent was recognised through social media and always making sure that I had a good portfolio. To grow your client base, you have to be forward-thinking and unique in your area. Make use of the opportunities around you, like social media, email marketing, showcasing your

work on models and applying to work in popular salons. My client base grew as I was working in a really busy salon, which meant I got their backlog of clients. I was also constantly asking for models and taking photos to showcase my talent. One tip is to reuse photos, but make sure you are presenting them differently. From one model you can capture ten different Instagram posts; this will eventually grow your name in the area, leading to more bookings.

Instagram marketing is a vital tool for hair businesses, what content works best for you?

When I first startedI only used photos, but now most of my content is reels, which I find work best for getting reach on your Instagram profile. It is hard constantly thinking of new content ideas, Salon Magazine

and I’ve tried many videos that have failed, but this needs to happen to make one video that works. Many of my clients use my social media content to inspire their next cut or colour. It’s also a great marketing tool for new clients, as they get a glimpse at how much work moves and looks in real time.

What are your goals for the future and how do you plan on achieving them? Looking to the future, I want to become a specialist in my area. I have been researching new courses to expand my skillset, one being a colour specialist course. I plan to gain further recognition by creating a more effective marketing strategy. In the future, I do want my own salon, but currently I am more focused on growing myself. @georgialouisehair

The 7 Deadly Sins of Colour It’s tempting to put your faith in colour as the great redeemer of profits, but if costs spiral out of control undetected, it can lead to disaster. Wide variations in quantities dispensed per service and how much is charged mean no one has a clear picture of colour use or if the bill even covers the cost, but Vish can stop profit going astray by helping you to avoid these seven deadly sins of colour.

1. Confusion

Not all services are created equally, but that’s how they are often charged. Differences in length, thickness, and porosity can drive up colour costs, leaving the salon out of pocket or the short-haired clients subsidising those with longer, thicker hair. In Vish salons, additional colour can trigger additional service charges based on rules set by the owner; same goes for added treatments, so no more missed services.

18

thesalonmagazine.co.uk

2. Gluttony

The arrival of Vish in 2018 showed that one person could swallow up £9 worth of colour while another just £1.09 worth for the exact same service, without anyone being aware of the discrepancy. Then there is the variance in charges; inexperienced stylists often waste more but charge less. Fortunately, Vish is a beacon of light, guiding everyone to more precise mixes closer to the sanctioned amounts covered in the

@thesalonmaguk

Salon Magazine

charge. Vish recently published a free checklist based on data from millions of services to identify colour benchmarks.

3. Wastefulness

Left-over colour is the great devourer of profit, with as much as 40% of colour mixed thrown away. Salons are effectively using and paying for nearly double the quantities they need. Using technology to remember formulas and quantities means the team mixes only what they

PROMOTION

require, slashing waste. “The cold, hard cash that was being spent on waste we didn’t realise we had is now staying in the business thanks to Vish,” said Luke Ormsby, Owner of Luke Ormbsy salons in Pinner and Primrose Hill, London.

4. Forgetfulness

No matter how thorough a stylist is, often it’s just too frantic during the appointment to write down formulas or quantities. Lost formulas hinder waste reduction and risk inconsistent results. “Record-keeping is always a nightmare in salons which means most stylists are working to memory, but having a complete list of every formula on Vish you’ve mixed for every client makes life so much easier,” said Lucy Oliphant, Owner of The Bank Hairdressing in Brigg. “It also means if a stylist is off, a colleague can step in to ensure the client isn’t turned away and disappointed.”

5. Anxiety

There’s no need to play it safe when you have Vish. Using the Plan Ahead™ function of the latest release of the Vish Colour Bar App, you can create elaborate formulas on your mobile

before the client arrives. While for new clients, you can mix small amounts of colour then use the Mix More function to remix the precise formula in increments measured for you. Pamela Pretorius, Owner of All Shook Up in Clapham, London has seen a real change in her team: “Vish helps build confidence, especially in the younger stylists, as it does the maths for you. The All Shook Up team can mix elaborate formulas in smaller amounts, confident they can mix more without stressing over the maths. My team often get the assistants to remix using the Mix More function to save time.”

6. Disorder

Those rows of tube boxes might look tidy, but they represent money tied up in stock. Free your cash and team from the tedious chore of stock takes by letting Vish count the grams used for you. It will show the exact quantities of each shade needed for replenishment and which are the most popular ones. “Before Vish, we’d just repeat our order because we didn’t have time to check what we’d Salon Magazine

used and so would end up with the same unused colours. There was a lot of money tied up in stock that has been reinvested into the business,” said Luke. “Now we do a physical count once a month and we’ve no slippage.”

7. Doubt

Vish banishes uncertainty and, in its place delivers balance, harmony, and clarity. You know exactly how much money you have tied up in stock, what needs replenishment, how much is being saved by reduced waste and what every treatment and toner should and does deliver to the business. As well as providing in-depth data on each individual stylist to help set goals, it identifies training gaps and opportunities to reward efficiency. Vish also opens the door to transparent charging - when it captures additional colour or services, it costs it out so you have absolute clarity on what the bill should be, and so do your clients. CHRISTMAS

Step into Christmas With advice from salon owners and industry experts, we share an extensive guide on the steps to take to prepare for the festive season, with tips on everything from retailing to longer working hours.

C

hristmas can be a thriving period for salons, in terms of welcoming new clients, elevating your reputation, introducing new staff and, most importantly, unprecedented revenue. But, nothing good comes easy and, to have a successful Christmas in your salon, preparation and organisation are key. For most salons, Christmas is the busiest time of the year, as customers look to treat themselves and their loved ones ahead of the festivities, with booking systems starting to fill as early as September. Lea Shaw, Founder of Rural Fringe, sees a real influx of bookings during November, and towards the end of the month, but prefers earlier requests: “We really do push clients to book as far in advance as possible, to try to manage bookings efficiently and utilise our time as much as possible.” The increased bookings during the festive period are often unsustainable

24

thesalonmagazine.co.uk

in your day-to-day salon operations, so certain measures have to be introduced to stretch the salon and accommodate as many clients as possible. To deal with the Christmas rush, Brian MacMillan, Owner of F&M Hairdressing, relies on early organisation: “We are big on scheduling and begin prep in July, to then make sure we are in a good place by mid-August. We use social media to push out reminders, however, it doesn’t take too much pressure for us to see an uplift in bookings.” To help organise appointments, many salons make use of the latest technology on offer. Jordan Gourley, Remi Cachet Super Stylist and Owner of Jordan Charlotte Hair Lounge, uses a booking app which takes away the extra admin after salon hours and reduces no-shows. “Our app sends out reminders to the client seven days, 48 hours, 24 hours and two hours before their appointment, which are sent via text and email. Since having our booking app, cancellations

@thesalonmaguk

Salon Magazine

have reduced massively. We’ve gone from having two or three a week, to maybe one or two a month.” ROAR’s Owner, Brian Leo McCallum, also utilises technology for organisation and efficiency. The salon has their own app for clients to book in a few clicks, with additional information on the services available and times with their preferred stylist: “The benefit of our app is that clients can easily book in the comfort of their own home in minutes, without having to wait for the salon to respond to their messages on social media, or waiting for them to answer the phone.” As appointment demands rise, so does the demand for staff. Christmas temps are a great way to lessen the work load and meet potential permanent staff. Leisa Robert, Founder of Brow HQ, explained how she uses staff to help deal with increased bookings: “We start offering our self-employed members more hours in September. Holiday

CHRISTMAS requests need to be kept to a minimum, as we strive to help as many clients shine during one of the busiest times of the year.” In the lead up to Christmas, a salon management tool can be the key to successfully handling the rush. However, Robert Taracido Ruiz, Treatwell’s Country Manager in the UK and Ireland, reminds salon owners that: “…although hair and beauty bookings are sky-high during the festive season, that doesn’t automatically mean that calendars will stay full.” With such high competition in the industry, it’s important to stand out and, to do so, Robert recommends making use of innovative software such as Treatwell, their marketing tool to send targeted emails and their integrated ‘book now’ button, so clients can fall in love with your work on socials and book their Christmas appointment all in one place. Juanita Huber-Miller, Founder of Townhouse, also stresses the importance of still shouting about your services, so you don’t get left behind in the rush. At Townhouse, they have a festive season marketing strategy, which aims not to only increase sales, but also create a special experience for their customers. “Our festive plan includes lots of fun components: This year we are running our first Christmas giveaway with Twelve Days of Townhouse. We also love to team up with other brands to offer exciting collaborations and partnerships to our customers. We also work with local businesses on Christmas-themed cross-promotions. Customers can also purchase Townhouse gift cards, making it easy for everyone to give the gift of a Townhouse experience,” Juanita said. Throughout Christmas, the number of no-shows and missed appointments increases, so, to avoid disappointment and lost revenue, cancellation policies are popular amongst salon owners. OSMO Ambassador, Jake Nugent, has a deposit scheme in place, which means that if his clients don’t provide the correct cancellation notice, they lose their deposit, and he emphasised the importance of this: “I’m running a business and time equals money. I’d strongly advise hairdressers to put this in place, it protects your finances.” Brian from ROAR has initiated a similar cancellation policy, where if an appointment is cancelled with 24 hours’

CHRISTMAS

notice, 50% of the service is charged, if the guest cancels on the day, then 100% of the booked service is charged: “By taking a deposit and having this cancellation policy, we are able to minimise cancellations and no-shows, and also fill any last-minute cancellations as quickly as possible.” Leisa explained why a strict and transparent no-show policy is crucial in terms of business, due to the nature of her services: “As a business that has high value and long appointment times for my treatments, such as Microblading, we simply could not operate with high percentages of no-shows or last-minute cancellations. Jordan recommends inviting Christmas

We also relax the rules and get into the Christmas spirit with festive treats, and maybe a glass of fizz after a busy day.” Brian MacMillan, Owner of F&M Hairdressing, motivates staff with a break to look forward to after the rush: “After the Christmas season, our staff get a full three weeks off, a chance to relax and recharge ahead of the New Year. We also have competition and bonus structures in place, allowing opportunities for extra cash to be earned, which works really well for us.” There is no better time for retailing than Christmas, and it’s important to spend time creating a retail section that makes the most out of this opportunity. Jordan and her team enjoy designing their yearly Christmas retail with a glass of fizz, she explained how they subtly merge the gifts in with their décor: “We add products and gift vouchers to our tree, so that when the clients are admiring the decorations, they can see the retail throughout.” Jordan has lots of bookings for a fresh

CHRISTMAS set of hair extensions in December, and advises salons to always let their clients know about the aftercare products to enhance their results, and to offer a Christmas promotion as a great incentive to encourage sales. To effectively prepare for the Christmas season, Robert discusses the benefits of utilising Treatwell’s innovative digital warehouse, stock management tools and insightful analytics: “Monitor your inventory to avoid overstocking or understocking, and use insights to predict popular products and create enticing bundles and festive offers. With Treatwell as your salon’s little helper, you can elevate your retail efforts this Christmas, and make the most out of peak season to enhance your revenue.” Retail placement matters: you have to make sure that your clients can always see the products that you stock. Kirsten Hazell, Founder of London Grace, stresses the importance of this, and of the range: “The location for a retail section is key, you should place it either somewhere people dwell, or in a quiet spacious area where people can take their time to browse. Make sure the retail section has a good amount of choice, but not too much that it’s overwhelming.” Label products clearly with descriptions and prices, and, to elevate your retailing, give the area a festive feel to inspire clients for gifting opportunities. Kirsten advised salons to remember the current economic climate when stocking their Christmas retailing: “With the cost of living crisis, value for money is more important than ever. Stocking fillers are an easy win, so make sure your lower price point items are accessible at the till.” Personalisation is always popular for gifting. At London Grace, their polishes all have names, meaning many are purchased based on someone a client knows or, at Christmas, something particularly festive such as Ruby or Holly. To help the gifts fly off the shelf, Kirsten recommends some Christmas retailing training to reduce the fear of rejection that some therapists experience when they try sales skills: “Encourage your team to look at sales in a different way; almost every client has something they’d like to improve, so training should centre around identifying each client’s concern and recommending a product that solves

Make sure the retail section has a good amount of choice, but not so much that it’s overwhelming. that problem.” Adele Clark, Owner of Spectrum Hair, stated that Christmas retailing is ‘essential’ for a salon business, in line with the trend of supporting local establishments enhanced by shopping easily from the salon chair. “It’s the ideal opportunity to help your clients’ distress from the madness of shopping and, of course, they respect your product knowledge!” Adele added. This is the ideal time for your staff to boost their wages with extra commission. Adele stressed this: “Festive gift sets usually come with a savvy price tag, meaning you are gaining your team Salon Magazine

loyalty with the security that the extra income provides for them.” Stocking up on lots of Christmas gift sets can be daunting, but Adele reassures salon owners with this advice: “With the ability to split these packs up after the festive season, there really is nothing to lose and everything to gain.” This extensive guide should help your salon prepare in the lead up to Christmas. Make sure to utilise salon management tools to handle the rush, spread the Christmas cheer with your staff to maintain a positive working environment and take the opportunity to up your salon’s retail game.

CHRISTMAS – ESSENTIAL 5

Welcoming Winter As preparations for Christmas begin, capitalise on the festivities and attract new clients with your window display. In this editorial, we highlight five ways decorate your store front to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Strategic Retailing

Don’t let your business mindset slip amidst the fun and festivities; use your window space to showcase the popular gifts you have on offer. Group products of the same category together to create an easy-to-view format, so someone looking for skincare isn’t distracted by the various surrounding nail products. By making sure similar products are in close proximity, customers are encouraged to buy related products, increasing your sales!

Baubles and Branding

As you let the Christmas spirit flow, don’t forget to stay onbrand. Building a salon business is more competitive than ever, and consistent branding is vital to stand out from others on the market. Creating a strong brand identity will keep customers engaged and connected, so enhance the impact of your Christmas display by using colours and imagery that coincides with your branding. For example, if your salon is known for its neutral hues, keep in touch with this with wooden baubles and minimalistic Christmas bunting.

Salon-Worthy Gifts

You will be rushed off your feet throughout the months leading up to the big day, so send your clients to your website to fill up their Christmas stockings by marketing your e-shop with signage in your store front display. A simple sign beneath the retailing reading ‘Shop the full range at www.salonshop.com’ will help increase sales online, especially for passers-by who aren’t clients but are searching for salon-worthy gifting.

Social Survey

In today’s competitive climate, where social media plays a vital role of a business’s branding, your Christmas window display is an opportunity to captivate customers, taking them away from their phone screens. Create excitement in the lead up to your Christmas display by engaging with your followers and hosting an Instagram poll with options on how you’ll decide to decorate. Once the votes are in, begin the countdown, using this as a fun way to celebrate the season with your customers by including them in your decorating decisions.

Time to Decorate

In a busy salon environment, time flies, and it’s important to set a date to decorate your store front, so you don’t forget. The traditional set in stone date for Christmas decorations is 27th November, but, as Christmas fills the stores when the sun is still shining in September, you can decorate whenever you feel like it! Your salon chairs will fill with back-to-back appointments before you know it, so we’d recommend setting some time aside before the Christmas surge to plan your window display and effectively help your business.

BUSINESS

Education Station Welcome to our new regular feature with the NHBF. Visit the Education Station each month to hear unrivalled knowledge and expertise on the latest trends and discussions to elevate your business. In this edition, the focus is on creating extra revenue in your salon.

How to Create Extra Revenue in Your Salon

As a business, it’s important to constantly seek ways to increase profits. One effective approach is to enhance your existing business structure by adding value. For salons, this may involve including an extra treatment or training staff. However, it’s crucial to recognise that these processes are not always simple and require careful consideration.

Extra Treatments

When adding an extra treatment to your salon service list, ensure that the total cost of the treatment is laid out, and you know exactly how much each step of the treatment will cost. Calculate how much you’re paying for wages, stock, rent, rates, utility bills, and accounting costs. You’ll need to increase your prices if you are only just breaking even or making a loss.

32

thesalonmagazine.co.uk

Deciding how much you’ll charge is a crucial decision to get right. There are lots of factors to consider, for example: • Your location. • Your target markets. • The range and type of services you offer. • Whether you’re going for high-volume turnover or the luxury end of the market. You’ll need to keep your plan up to date; it should include details about every aspect of your plans, including realistic forecasts for cash flow, turnover, profit and loss, and expected sales for the next three to five years.

Training and Education

By investing in your staff, you are investing in the continued success of your business. Your employees are your greatest asset and a commitment to their ongoing training and development will encourage staff loyalty, help retain key

talent, and boost staff engagement in your business. Your employees will be better equipped to help you stay ahead of the competition. Salons should consider offering tiered pricing based on the level of experience each employee has. This will help increase your profits and provide a clear career path to help inspire and motivate your team.

eet Lindsey Watson, a former NHS nurse who decided to pursue a career in aesthetics at the age of 52. Three years later, she is now the proud owner of Elle Jay Aesthetics, employing a team of four amazing individuals who, together with Lindsey, contribute to the clinic’s thriving success. Following a visit to 3D Aesthetics HQ in early 2023, Lindsey decided to introduce their advanced technology into her business to add to her existing treatment offering, and within an impressive 60 days, she was able to pay off her initial investment with 3D Aesthetics. While working in private hospitals, Lindsey gained insight into the aesthetics sector and watched some

of her colleagues enter this industry. As the lockdown eased, she began her own journey. Lindsey went on to complete courses designed for medical professionals and rented a room in a clinic while still working for the NHS. She gradually built her presence through open days and social media, eventually

opening her very own clinic as she got busier, leading her to leave her full-time job as an advanced nurse practitioner. While researching new clinic equipment, Lindsey came across companies and devices that were in her words ‘way too expensive’ to offer affordable treatments to her clients;

PROMOTION she said: “Some of the machines were £100,000 each with costly consumables. As a result, the price point for the treatments was also very high. They also didn’t offer the scope of treatments that machines like 3D HydrO2 Facial or 3D lipo-ultimatepro offer.” After Lindsey visited the 3D Aesthetics head office and experienced the machines first hand, she decided to invest in the 3D lipo-ultimatepro, 3D HydrO2 facial and Dermalux® Flex MD - and soon after she found the introduction of the machines significantly impacted her clinic. The positive feedback from her clients and the remarkable results achieved through the treatments led to a surge in demand. Clients experienced incredible transformations, including substantial inch loss and boosted self-confidence. Lindsey said: “We have a lot of ladies with ‘mummy tummy’ and ‘menopause belly’. The 3D lipo-ultimatepro is fantastic for this. We tend to do a one-off treatment with cryolipolysis, followed by at least four sessions of a combination of cavitation, radio frequency and shockwave. One lady lost 20cm from her waist in 12 weeks after one cryo and four combination treatments. Another lady said she’s bought a bikini for the first time in years!” Commenting on her return on investment, Lindsey said: “I looked at my figures, and since I bought the machines five months ago, my turnover increased by £62k. I can now pay myself more than I was getting in the NHS, pay other people a decent wage, and still reinvest in the business.” Lindsey emphasised the impact of 3D Aesthetics, she said: “Don’t hesitate! The machines do exactly what you need them to do, are a good price, and treatments sell very well. This week alone, we’re doing 32 body sculpting treatments with 3D lipo-ultimatepro, six 3D HydrO2 facials, four radio frequency treatments using 3D HydrO2 facials, and six 3D Powersculpt treatments.” Lindsey’s partnership with 3D Aesthetics extended beyond the machines themselves. She’s happy with the after-sales support and guidance she’s received, including training, engineering support and marketing. CREATE THIS STYLE

Step one

Step two

Step three

It starts with innocent questions. The less you know, the more you learn. We recommend these two simple but oh-sopowerful questions: “Tell me about your hair (or for a returning client, ‘Tell me, how’s your hair been?’)” “What would you love your hair to be like?” It’s as simple as listening, advising and agreeing on a plan.

Shampoo Twice with Zero. (For normal, virgin, very curly, afro and resistant hair types leave on for five minutes with a cap). Rinse, towel-dry and comb through. Analyse the hair’s porosity and weakness, looking for weak and dry hair, the strength of curl and areas that are already drying out. Spray Regulate in 3-4cm sections, starting at the nape. Comb through. Concentrate on the most porous areas.

Apply Reset (or your Reset/Turbo mix) in 2-3cm sections, starting at the nape, close to the root but not on it. Cover with a plastic cap to make sure the hair stays damp while the treatment sinks in for 3045 minutes. Comb through after 20 or 30 minutes to redistribute the treatment.

Step four

Step five

Step six

Rinse for 20 seconds. (For white and light blonde hair, rinse for an extra minute). Gently towel dry, apply Lock, comb through, and leave for two minutes. Rinse for 30 seconds. Blow-dry the hair until it’s 100% dry. Blast it dry quickly before finishing with a brush.

Iron from the roots to the ends in one smooth motion. On the first pass, let each section cool for two seconds before continuing. Iron the hair slowly in 2-3cm sections. Ironing instructions: Weaker hair: 180-190°C 4-6 passes. Normal hair: 200-210°C 6-7 passes. Resistant/Textured hair: 220-230°C 7-10 passes. Finish with one final pass at 180°C in giant sections.

Hair can be shampooed from just 30 minutes after the treatment, (for maximum straightening power on the curliest hair, we recommend not shampooing for the first 48 hours). Hair must be rinsed with cool water for 3-5 minutes first. Clients will need to use Fabriq Shampoos and Conditioners to get maximum results from the treatment.

itamin C plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health, as the skin constitutes the body’s largest organ and is situated farthest from internal organs, making it the last recipient of nutrients from our dietary intake. Its significance lies in its ability to stimulate collagen production, a process that gradually declines by 1% annually starting at the age of 25 and further deteriorates, with an additional 30% loss in the first year after menopause. Incorporating Vitamin C into your clients’ skincare regimen offers numerous benefits, including skin brightening, pigmentation reduction, and bolstering the body’s natural defense mechanisms through its potent antioxidant properties. To harness the full potential of Vitamin C for your clients’ skin, topical application using concentrated skincare products is indispensable The VITAL C collection by IMAGE Skincare encompasses four distinct Vitamin C blends, imparting both potency and efficacy. These blends feature Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, an oil-soluble Vitamin C, L-Ascorbic Acid, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, all of which are water-soluble. Driven By Results In an exclusive interview with Dr. Valérie Enderlin, Founder of DECALYS Switzerland, we learn about how her career in medicine fuelled her drive to create a results-driven skincare brand.

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your background in medicine.

My career in medicine has been a remarkable voyage spanning over two decades, rooted in the pursuit of understanding and addressing the diverse aspects of skin health and its regenerative power. I have worked in various reputable medical institutions, and now lead my own practice in Zurich, where I have expanded my knowledge and skills in the field of dermatology. My passion for dermatology extends beyond the clinic. It has driven me to venture into the realm of skincare innovation, leading to the establishment of Decacel Laboratoires SA and the DECALYS Switzerland brand.

How has your medical expertise and entrepreneurial spirit inspired the range of products?

My journey as a skin surgeon has been instrumental in shaping my perspective on skincare. It all began when I realised that there was a significant gap in the market for

48

thesalonmagazine.co.uk

dermatological products aimed at scar treatment and prevention. Nothing available met the rigorous standards I hold for my practice and my patients. So, I embarked on an exciting journey of research and innovation. In 2021, this journey bore fruit with the birth of DECALYS Medical, our expert line for scar care. At the heart of this line lies the unique Alpha 3-Complex®—a trio of components designed to stimulate the skin’s cellular regeneration process. This innovative approach to promoting skin regeneration not only sets DECALYS Medical apart in the realm of scar treatment but also lays the foundation for the care of healthy skin. Building upon this principle, in 2023, we introduced DECALYS Dr. Enderlin, an innovative line of skincare products. The inspiration for these products emerged from the confluence of my medical expertise and my entrepreneurial spirit, driven by a commitment to redefine skincare standards.

A Flawless Festive Finish With the festive season just around the corner, and clients open to treat themselves or others, we look at ways to create luxury treatments with a higher price point, and how to market these effectively to your clients to increase sales.

C

hristmas is all about giving, and it’s the perfect time for your salon to create luxury treatments as clients search for gifts for others and themselves. Deciding how much to charge clients for nail treatments is always a challenge, so, with the help of industry experts, we explore how to differentiate luxury

NAILS treatments, and how to plan effective marketing strategies and festive treats for your client base to help build loyalty. To warrant a higher price point, your luxury nail service has to stand out from others on your service list. The Christmas period is filled with glitz and glamour, which urges consumers to splash the cash and pamper themselves. Nail Technician, Michaela Phillips, recommended updating your space so clients want to spend more time in the salon and, therefore, opt for the longer and more luxurious treatments: “Decorating your salon, and offering a Christmas-themed drinks menu, will help build an atmosphere where clients will be more inclined to treat themselves to a well-deserved pamper session. As we know, Christmas is the busiest time of year, so who wouldn’t want to take some time to recharge.” To make luxury treatments more appealing than others, you could add in an exfoliation treatment, massage, glass of fizz or use products from a well-known premium brand such as Chanel or Jo Malone. Nail art is an invaluable skill to teach your technicians. Not only does it entice new clients by marketing beautiful designs, the creativity and time taken to complete nail art warrants a higher price point with minimal extra product use. To price your nail art services, Beth Davis, Educator at The GelBottle, advised: “We would suggest either offering the nail art price based on the time it takes, for example £5 per 15 minutes, or base it on a tiered system. The tiered system would be priced per nail, with basic, advanced or extreme nail art, which you can advertise with examples on a clearly labelled Instagram Highlights for customers to reference.” Beth emphasised the impact that showcasing options to your clients on social media has: “Clients love inspiration. They might know they want nail art, or something more creative, but until they see it, they are unsure what it could look like.” By seeing previous designs, clients are swayed to opt for a more advanced style at a higher price point. Salon System Nail Expert and Owner of Sketched, Julie-Anne Larivière, agreed with the influence of previous designs: “If you want to convince your clientele to opt for a bolder choice this Christmas,

If you want to convince your clientele to opt for a bolder choice this Christmas, consider posting your designs on social media ahead of the festive rush to tempt them. consider posting your designs on social media ahead of the festive rush to tempt them. You could even have some inspiration photos on display in your salon!” Regarding pricing, Julie suggested considering any extras you use in the service: “If your regular hand painted nail art is priced at £1 per nail, but you’ve used multiple loose glitters, consider upping the price to £1.50 per nail. This will cover the cost of your extras, as well as giving you a little extra profit.” Grayce Durden, Owner of By Grayce, saves an inspiration album for her clients to browse when they can’t decide, which helps boost nail art sales by showing a variety of styles, some that aren’t overly festive: “Lots of clients are keen for festive vibes, but are conscious of going overboard on the Christmas art in case they have their nails on past the season and into January!” Setting higher price points can be daunting, but, if your nail art takes time and is noticeably intricate, your clientele will understand why they are spending extra on these services. To help Salon Magazine

negotiate pricing, Chantelle Tremain, Owner of Chantelle Tremain Nails and Beauty, offers a consultation service to help alleviate any miscommunication with the pricing of luxury treatments ahead of their booking: “For nail art that is intricate and full of detail, I will have a consultation with my client. This will be over Instagram direct message.” Michaela looks forward to the festive season to let her creative juices flow. She offers a variety of nail art to cater to every client’s taste. To make sure her nail art bookings over the festive period increase, she structures a specialised marketing strategy. “To effectively market my Christmas nail designs, I start posting my designs early on in November, so clients get a flavour of what’s to come. I have found that doing polls on my Instagram stories help gauge what designs will be popular for the season.” A seasonal nail art board is a great way to help your clients visualise different styles. Michaela starts prepping her board in September, so her clients are fully inspired for the Christmas period.

The board is especially helpful for indecisive clients and helps them choose something different. Townhouse Nail Salons are renowned for delivering a flawless treatment experience from beginning to end. They offer a range of classic and seasonal nail art designs, which are displayed by their digital look books at every mani station: clients can also browse the looks ahead of their appointment online, giving them time to consider trying something different. For customers looking for that something extra special, we offer our bespoke service - where customers can choose whatever they wish!” Over the festive season, salons often treat their client base; this helps maintain client loyalty as well as spreading Christmas cheer! Beth advised how this gift can be something genuine and thoughtful: “It doesn’t have to be something that puts the nail tech out of pocket financially, but can be as simple as a handwritten Christmas card or a free add-on such as a hand massage.” Christmas treats are a great way to show your clients appreciation for their loyalty throughout the year: Michaela gifts her returning clients with goodie

bags which include scratch cards and nail treats. “By offering small gifts, my clients are encouraged to continue using my services in the New Year,” she said. At Townhouse, they partner with fantastic brands to make their clients feel truly special: “We bring exclusive partnerships to our customers, and launch limited edition nail art designs to celebrate the magic and capture the essence of the festive season,” Juanita added. Over the festive period, you are sure to see an influx of customers. Ahead of the rush, prepare detailed nail art and treatments that you can offer at a higher price point to increase your revenue, as well as showcasing your talent. Make sure to market these designs on your social media platforms, and in-salon, to inspire your clients, and, of course, gift your loyal customers with some Christmas cheer to help maintain a loyal relationship into the New Year!

Editor’s Day Out Our Editor visited the Victoria branch of the popular premium nail salon chain, TOWNHOUSE. Equipped with a team of nail experts who are meticulously trained to deliver treatments ‘The Townhouse Way’ Brooke shares all the details on her experience!

A

flash of warm light and pink hues lit up the grey city street, with a bright billboard just outside which caught my attention reading ‘Manicures Here’ it was at this moment, I knew I had arrived at the popular pamper destination. As soon as you step through the glass doors, you are transported away from the city to a calm oasis, enclosed by the brand’s signature neutral interiors. The impact of the aesthetic highlighted the importance of consistent interior and branding for salon chains, as this aspect enhanced my overall experience and is a factor that would lead me to book at another TOWNHOUSE location. The salon entrance is lined with interactive check-in and booking pods which suits the busy city clientele surrounding, likely to squeeze their nail appointment in between meetings. The booking system showcases the prices and time allocated for each treatment, so

56

thesalonmagazine.co.uk

that clients can slot their nails into their day with ease. Central to the salon was a curved nail bar, the shape worked effectively as I watched clients engaging in conversation with one another across the curve, whilst others sat in-between and enjoyed their treatment with headphones in solitude. I was welcomed to my pedicure chair by Daisy and Rebecca who worked together to deliver the Simultaneous Mani-Pedi Treatment, made possible by the salons specially adapted table that stands across the arms of the chair. This treatment is, again, perfectly suited to the busy city client, who can get their nails and toes pampered all at once, not forgetting freeing up a space at the nail bar for extra bookings. As soon as I was seated, my bags were hidden in a small slot beside the chair, designed to maintain the beautiful salon aesthetic. The beverage menu elevated my experience, as I sipped on my Chai Latte,

@thesalonmaguk

Daisy passed me a QR code, in which I could scan to decide my colour. The QR code is available online, so that clients in a rush can decide on their colour prior to their appointment. The other benefit the virtual colours, is the opportunity to filter your choice; I wanted a gel colour so could easily differentiate this from the normal polish options. I noticed the attention to detail as the therapists spent a thorough ten minutes with a range of tools prepping my nails. I am writing this a week after my appointment and I can say that the preparation before the gel has made a huge difference to the longevity of the treatment, my nails still look fresh from the salon! My time at TOWNHOUSE flew by, even if I hadn’t enjoyed a treatment, simply talking to my therapists would’ve been a delightful experience. I left polished to perfection and recognise why the TOWNHOUSE chain is expanding.

CREATE THIS STYLE

Festive Abstract In this Create This Style, Halo VIP, Hari Hatfield, demonstrates how to create popular abstract nail art with a festive twist!

A

bstract nail art is a popular choice amongst clients looking for versatility and simplicity. This design can be worn throughout the year, in any colour, and on any nail length or shape. It provides a subtle pop of colour without being too overwhelming and is easy to create. One of the most requested abstract designs is the paint stroke technique. While this design is usually limited to two or three nails on each hand, for this look, the artist has decided to go all out. To create this abstract nail art, Hari has used Pure Nails products, including the new Christmas Sparkle Season collection.

This particular look is the perfect subtle nod to the festive season without being overwhelmingly Christmas themed. It’s the perfect cross over for Christmas to New Year, so your client can see in 2024, without having Santa on their nails! Hari explained how the paint stroke technique involves creating random brush strokes across the nail using different colours: “This technique provides a unique and abstract look, and the use of different colours allows for a range of customisation options. I’ve chosen to use the classic colours associated with Christmas, red gold and green.” Overall, this abstract nail art design is versatile, easy to create, and perfect for Christmas. The combination of festive colours and Sparkle Season glitters creates a subtle, yet glamorous vibe, that is sure to make a statement. So, whether your client is looking for a simple pop of @thesalonmaguk

colour, or a bold and bright look, abstract nail art is a great choice for any occasion.

Hari’s Top Tips

Choose your colour palette: Pick your preferred colours and glitter shades for your design. Consider using colours that complement each other to create a cohesive look. The right tools: Use a thin brush or a striping brush to create the paint strokes on your nails. Practice makes perfect: If you’re new to nail art, don’t worry if your first attempt isn’t perfect. Keep practicing and experimenting with different colours and techniques until you find your favourite style. By following these tips, you can create a beautiful abstract nail art look that is perfect for any occasion! purenails.co.uk

CREATE THIS STYLE

Step one

Step two

Step three

After you have completed your nail prep and applied your base coat, choose a nude base shade to apply to all the nails. For this look I have chosen to use the Halo EasiBuild in Cover Pink.

Using a thin liner brush, start applying brush strokes of gel polish using the shade French White. To create the brush stroke effect, paint an oblong of colour at the free edge of the nail, taking up approximately one quarter of the nail, and pull the paint down in thin lines of varying lengths towards the cuticle area. Once you’re happy with all of your coloured brush strokes, cure.

Again, using a thin liner brush, start applying brush strokes of gel polish using the shade Evergreen. To create the brush stroke effect, paint an oblong of colour at the free edge of the nail, taking up approximately one quarter of the nail, and pull the paint down in thin lines of varying lengths towards the cuticle area. Once you’re happy with all of your coloured brush strokes, cure.

Step four

Step five

Step six

Using the exact same brush stroke technique again, apply the gel polish in shade Dazzle. Ensure that the lengths of the brush strokes are varying to help with the abstract nature of the nail art; we don’t want it to look too neat! Once you’re happy, cure.

Once again using the exact same brush stroke technique, apply the gel polish in shade Party. Once you’re happy, cure.

Now we have got all of the colours on there we just need a little something to finish off this design! Using a dotting tool, apply black dots of varying sizes and in different places over the top of the brush stroke art you’ve just created. Black will stand out on any colour and the dots help soften up the design as the brush strokes alone can look a little too ridid. Once you’re happy with your black dots, cure. Finally, seal in your design using Halo No Wipe Top Coat and cure!

CURLY HAIR

Standing Out With a Specialist As the curly hair community continues to grow, we look at the importance of having a designated specialist and how to offer the best results to your curly clients.

A

s more and more clients are discovering and embracing their natural hair texture in line with the curly hair journey trend on social media, it’s important for your salon to evolve with the growing community to maintain and increase bookings. Trepadora’s Founder, Keisha Lawler, advises salons to prepare to cater to the growing client base: “The demand for more authentic spaces that cater for curly hair will only continue to grow and

64

thesalonmagazine.co.uk

@thesalonmaguk

salons who want to benefit from this demand should equip their stylists with in-depth training and knowledge before advertising to this consumer.” Salons should always aim to cater to all hair types, including curly hair textures. However, for salons to get the best results for curly hair, stylists have to be trained properly and be knowledgeable. Due to the intricacies required to help this hair type flourish, Keisha said: “Having qualified specialists who can truly listen and meet the needs of the

CURLY HAIR curly haired client should be standard in any salon due to the unique challenges this hair type faces.” Gina Conway’s salon offers this service, she explained how her designated specialist in curls, Jo Strugnell, brings curls back to life: “She spends the time that curls require to be styled and she teaches our clients how to look after their natural texture from home. This makes her clients incredibly loyal, they know that Jo understands their hair, so they won’t go anywhere else.” Rush Hair and Beauty also have a curl specialist, Delroy Davy, to work in line with the growing demand, he is proud of his position which is increasing in popularity and said: “I do everything I can to make sure that I cater to the needs of our clients and the wider market in the surrounding areas. This was a very important position to have in our salon as we have a large curly hair community and it was vital we had services and stylists who can deal with this hair type properly.” There are several strategies salons can implement to enhance their curly hair services. At Blue Tit salons, their stylists undergo extensive training in curly hair cutting and styling techniques to meet the unique needs of their clients. They also host events and workshops which are focused on educating their clients on the best care for their curls. Pashcan’el Mitchell, Blue Tit’s afro and textured hair specialist said: “Overall, our goal is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where individuals with curly hair feel understood and empowered.” In any hair category, the consultation is vital to understand the client’s needs and expectations to deliver their desired result. Keisha explained how as the same as any consultation, with curly hair you have to listen carefully and ask the client questions throughout. However, with this hair type a more in-depth consultation stage is required: “A curly hair consultation will take a bit longer than your average client, so it’s important to take the time to get a clear picture of what exactly they want. Asking the client for pictures that inspire their result is a great tip.” Kelly Shone-Adams, Owner of Technocracy, has partnered with OSMO who have launched a Curl Revival collection. The range is specially developed for waves, curls and coily hair

types, this means Kelly can proactively recommend the range to her curly haired clients. She advised salons to offer a consultation and aftercare for curly clients just like everyone else and explained the positive impact this will have on the overall salon service and experience. “Taking the time to hear what your client wants before you start cutting and being able to understand their needs when they leave the salon is paramount. It’s not just about them sitting in your chair, but how they’re going to care for their curls when they go home. Being able to confidently explain about the products you’re using, will enable your customer to get the best results at home.” Gina Conway detailed the in-depth consultation they have designed for curly textured hair in her salon: “During our consultations, we determine how the client styles their hair and what products they use at home, what their pain points are, how can we improve the condition and look of their hair and what techniques and products will really benefit them to bring out their curls.” Ultimately, to construct the detailed

This means that the consultation process should be a time for clients to detail their problems, and gain expert salon advice on resolving these issues. In regards to marketing these tailored services, Jenifer Covington-Bowers, Brand Ambassador for Hairstory said: “Salons should make it clear that they are ‘an all-texture capable salon’ via their website and social channels. This would need to be backed up by a list of products, treatments and skilled staff that meet the curly hair texture needs.” Rainbow Room International include all

of their curly hair services on their price lists. Their Artistic Director, Suzie McGill, explained how in her role she ensures that she showcases curly hair throughout the looks and collection shoots which helps to market these specialised services to the growing clientele. “These collection images are shared across our social media platforms, in our salon windows, on our website and also on all our marketing materials such as leaflets, flyers, brochures etc. We not only showcase curly hair styling, but also colour on curly hair. Colour looks beautiful on curly hair to enhance the natural hair texture and I always love to showcase this in my creative work that can be used for our Rainbow Room International branding.”

CURLY HAIR Equipped with specialised texture training for stylists, personalised services and a carefully curated product selection for curls, Blue Tit salon needed an effective marketing strategy to shout about their tailored offering. To do so, they touch on seven key marketing points: a dedicated section online for their curly services, regular social media content, blog posts with tips for styling, happy client testimonials, collaborating with industry experts who are influential in the community, workshops and email marketing. “By employing a combination of these strategies, we effectively reach and engage with our target audience of curly haired clients, ultimately building a strong and loyal customer base,” Pashcan’el said. In terms of products, to deliver the best results you have to introduce high performing stock for curls into your salon, by doing so you’ll also show a genuine commitment to meeting your client’s desired outcome, fostering a long-lasting relationship. ALTERNA Ambassador, Sabrina Dijkman, emphasised the importance of ensuring your salon has products that specifically cater to curly hair: “Clients truly appreciate their stylists being able

CURLY HAIR

Curl Protection Program Jim Shaw, Owner of Toni&Guy Billericay and Multi-Award Winning Hairdresser, shares his top tips to help your clients care for their curls this winter.

T

he weather is getting colder and this can cause client’s curls to lack moisture and look dry and frizzy. With that in mind, it’s important that we offer our clients advice to look after their curls as best as possible and use the correct products to keep their curls nourished, defined and free from frizz. Below are some of my top tips for caring for curls this season.

Deep Conditioning

This is an important tip to maintain your client’s curls and give them an extra hydration boost. You should recommend using a deep conditioning hair mask, treatment or leave in conditioner as often as their curls need it to replenish lost moisture in their hair and leave their curls looking strong and healthy.

Maintenance Trims

By booking in for regular trims your clients will prevent split ends, which is essential to keep their curls in their best, healthy and bouncy state.

Skip Heated Styling

The combination of cold weather outside and going indoors where you will have the heating on can cause hair to become dry and dull. Therefore, to avoid causing extra damage to your curls, try to avoid heated styling tools where possible.

Protective Styling

If you clients are stepping away from using heated styling tools in autumn/

68

winter, why not advise using some protective styling for their curls instead? Braids, twists and buns are great options and as well as being protective, look incredibly chic.

Hair Oil

Hair oils are a great product to give your clients hair extra moisture and can also be used to help seal split ends.

SIMPLY SOCIAL

Making Socials Simple In the world of hairdressing, making meaningful connections with clients through social media is a powerful way to secure bookings and foster trust. This month, SimplyHair’s social media expert Brad Williams, delves deeper into some specific content ideas, with a focus on the ‘Get Ready with Me’ TikTok trend, and other relatable content that hairdressers can create.

GRWM

Storytelling

‘Get Ready with Me’ also known as #GRWM videos are a fantastic way to connect with clients and showcase your expertise. In these videos, you take your audience on a journey as you prepare for the day. For a hairdresser, a GRWM video might look like an ‘Outfit of the Day tutorial’, a vlog of you travelling to the salon or a BTS video showcasing how you prep the salon for your first client. These videos make you super relatable by showing your daily routines and professional rituals.

Personal storytelling allows clients to connect with you on a deeper level, understanding the person behind the professional facade. If you are prepared to, people connect when those sharing a story are open to being vulnerable, so tapping into those more challenging times throughout your career could really pull in an engaged and invested audience.

Consultations

Styling Tutorials

Styling tutorials are a goldmine for hairdressers looking to connect with their clients on social media. Create short, snappy tutorials that focus on specific hairstyles or techniques that are your go-to’s for a busy salon day. Explain each step clearly, offer practical tips, and use visual aids to help your audience understand the process. This type of content not only showcases your skills but also positions you as an expert in your field.

Product Reviews

Give your clients insight into the products you use and love by creating honest product reviews. Test and review haircare products, styling tools, and accessories, sharing your thoughts on

70

their effectiveness, and the pros and cons. This not only demonstrates your knowledge but also helps clients make informed decisions about the products they use on their hair. Be authentic and unbiased in your reviews to build trust.

@thesalonmaguk

Salon Magazine

Showcasing your clients’ transformations is an amazing way to showcase your work, however, showing the consultation process is also a very effective way to show off your skills. Grabbing a mic for a willing client and talking through on camera what they are looking for and how you plan to achieve it will show potential clients you truly listen and can work with them to achieve the style they are looking for. In the world of social media, creating relatable content is the key to connecting with clients as a hairdresser. By offering ‘Get Ready with Me’ videos, story times, styling tutorials, and consultations, you can show that there’s a real person behind your brand. Your clients will appreciate the authenticity and expertise, ultimately leading to more bookings and stronger client relationships. www.simplyhair.co.uk

products and how it helps them achieve remarkable results for their clients. To achieve the best results for their clients Slunks use the SimplyHair foils, they explained how the thickness of the foil is a perfect deterrant from rips and the carefully selected material avoids sticking to the hair avoiding bleach bleeds. This attention to detail and quality is a testament to SimplyHair’s commitment to providing top-notch products that salon professionals can rely on. The other products the team rely on for top-tier salon results is their signature comb: “We also love the wide-tooth comb as it’s the perfect tool for combing

With a range of top-quality products from SimplyHair at their disposal, we were curious to know which ones stole the hearts of the Slunks team: “Our favourite SimplyHair product would be the foils because it doesn’t slip and catches clients’ attention, or the weaves due to their thickness and unbeatable quality.” It’s clear that the relationship between Slunks and SimplyHair is built on a foundation of trust in product quality and innovation. Curl Nation In this piece, Denman discuss how making the most of texture means getting comfortable with every kind of curl.

A

s a nation we are increasingly diverse and in fact, globally 55%* of the population has some form of textured hair, so why do curly clients strike fear into the hearts of so many hair professionals? Erica Liburd (@themusecurls) is a Cross Curl Specialist, Advocate and Educator plus a salon owner of The Muse Salon in Northampton, she said: “Existing hairstylists are less prepared to work with diverse clientele, limiting their skills and inclusivity. Clients are having to travel miles from where they live to source a professional that caters for their hair type. The lack of curly hair representation will continue to have an impact on the lack of diverse salons and team members that work in them.” It is a terrible cycle of ignorance that Erica is working hard to break. “Salon owners should consciously strive towards diversifying their staff’s training opportunities and networking. They should also consider product offerings, and services to ensure that they can effectively cater to clients with all hair

textures where possible,” Erica added. Thankfully, an increasing number of stylists are upping their game and ensuring that services for ALL textures are on offer. Often curly clients have had a terrible past experience and are wary of trying a new salon. Erica recommends reassuring curly clients by using social media to show diverse work on textured hair. Denman Ambassador, Brandon Messinger (@brandonmessingerhair), is an experienced curl stylist and is a past finalist of Afro Hairdresser of the Year at the BHA’s. His watch word for curly hair is ‘respect’. “You need to respect the curl. You can’t cut curly hair technically or you will end up with a horrible result. You need to take a visual approach and assess the head thoroughly before you begin. Consider: what is the density of the hair? What is the curl pattern and tightness? Are there areas of the

head where the curl is looser? I always start every curly cut by detangling and prepping the hair with Denman’s D38 Detangler. You want minimal tension when cutting, so use the fat side of the comb. You want to promote the curl, not suppress it. The tighter the curl, the less tension you use. When styling, I distribute moisture and styling products evenly through the hair with the Denman D3 Original Styler and then I diffuse gently before teasing out volume and shape with the Denman D17 Curl Volumiser as appropriate.” Diversifying your skills and embracing all textures means a diverse clientele too, yielding more opportunities and rewards and serving the whole community. Tool Takeover Beautyfor are renowned as the equipment brand developed by and for beauty professionals, offering the kit to start up a successful beauty business. In this piece, they discuss the importance of quality nail implement tools.

G

ood quality nail implement tools are essential for maintaining a successful nail business for several reasons:

Efficiency and Sharpness:

Good-quality tools are made from high-grade materials and are precisionengineered. This means they remain sharp and perform effectively for a longer time. Dull or low-quality tools can lead to rough edges, uneven nail surfaces, and more time spent on each client’s nails. Sharp tools ensure a smoother and faster process.

Better Prep and Finish:

Nail preparation is a crucial step in achieving a long-lasting and flawless nail finish. High-quality tools enable nail technicians to properly clean, shape, and prepare the nails, ensuring better adhesion for nail polish or extensions. A well-prepped nail surface also contributes to a more professional and aesthetically pleasing final result.

Durability:

Investing in good-quality tools may require a higher initial cost, but they tend to last longer. This means you won’t have to replace them as frequently, ultimately saving money in the long run. Quality tools are also less prone to breakage or damage during use. Now, let’s discuss what sets Beautyfor’s nail equipment range apart from the rest:

Precision and Craftsmanship:

Beautyfor places a strong emphasis on precision engineering and craftsmanship. Their tools are made from high-quality materials that are durable and maintain sharpness over time. This commitment to quality ensures consistent performance and excellent results.

78

thesalonmagazine.co.uk

Innovative Design:

Beautyfor continually innovates its product designs to meet the evolving needs of nail professionals. They incorporate ergonomic features to enhance comfort during use or develop tools with unique functionalities to simplify nail procedures.

Professional Endorsement: Many professional nail technicians and salons endorse Beautyfor’s range due to its reputation for quality and performance. This endorsement speaks to the trustworthiness of the brand within the industry. As for the hero product in the Beautyfor range, one popular choice among nail technicians is the ‘Precision Nail Clippers.’ These clippers are known for their sharp cutting edge, ergonomic design, and durability. They are designed to provide precise and clean nail cuts, making them a favourite among professionals.

@thesalonmaguk

Maintaining hygiene is paramount in the nail business. Beautyfor’s range includes a variety of disinfectant products designed specifically for nail tools and equipment. These disinfectants are crucial for preventing the spread of infections and ensuring the safety of both technicians and clients. Proper disinfection practices help build trust with clients and uphold the reputation of your salon. In summary, good quality nail tools are essential for efficiency, sharpness, better prep, and a professional finish. Beautyfor stands out in the market due to its commitment to precision, innovative design, and professional endorsement. Their hero product, the Precision Nail Clippers, is a top choice for many nail technicians. Additionally, Beautyfor’s range includes essential disinfectant products to prioritise hygiene and safety in your salon. www.beautyfor.co.uk
