ith less than two months to go until Christmas Day, we’ve been working hard this month to find ways to help you achieve your most successful festive season to date.

For hair and beauty salons, November and December can be one of the busiest times of the year as consumers throw caution to the wind and spend cash on gifts and quick-fix party season services.

But with competition rife on the high street, businesses must be competitive in terms of product, value and service if they want to appeal to today’s cash-strapped consumers.

For that reason, this month we caught up with some of the industry’s leading business minds for some expert ideas on pulling in the crowds from now until spring in our feature, 10 ways to create a buzz this Christmas, on pages 52-54. Of course the month of November is now officially the time when men and women unite around the world to raise money and awareness for men’s health. Movember launched in 2003 and in the past ten years, it has become a major campaign underpinned by the idea that men grow moustaches in return for donations. But with so many ways to take part (women can even dedicate themselves to raising the spirit of participants while they grow their facial hair while anyone can host a Movember party) we report on the history of the campaign and also offer some additional tips on how to raise money over on page 30.

Elsewhere in the issue, we couldn’t fail to mention our recent milestone: this month marks the seventy-fifth edition of The Salon Magazine. In the five years that I’ve been the editor of this publication the industry has seen a whole manner of developments, changes and innovations – and we’ve been there to report on the latest the industry has to offer.

Global hairdressers unite in London for The Alternative hair Show 2013 raising £180,000 for Fighting Leukemia

A

nne Veck, Electric, Mahogany, TIGI, Sanrizz, Saco and Robert Masciave were among the global hairdressing teams taking part in this year’s spectacular Alternative Hair Show.

Held inside London’s Royal Albert Hall on the evening of the second day of Salon International, the event was hosted by Alternative Hair Show founder Tony Rizzo and Anthony Mascolo and raised over £180,000 for the Fighting Leukemia foundation.

Over 5,000 attendees watched 19 creative hair teams from the UK, Europe, Australia, Russia, Japan and America present a series of fast-paced hair shows all based on this year’s theme: Enigma. The word was re-interpreted in a completely different way by each team – from the ‘20s-inspired flapper girls created

by Anne Veck to the voodoo ladies

by Austria’s Fehringer. Other standout

collections included Dmitry Vinokurov of Russia, whose regal empresses wore crowns and tiaras made entirely from braids, and TIGI’s highly texturised monochromatic story that saw snowdrops falling on the stage.

In addition to the theatrical hair shows, the evening saw several top hairdressers receiving awards for their creativity and services to the industry. Legends John Frieda was awarded for his fundraising efforts; Toni Mascolo took home a trophy for Toni and Guy’s fiftieth anniversary while Denman International’s John Rainey received an award for the company’s 75year milestone.

Meanwhile, Misha Cadkova from the Czech Republic beat off competition from across the globe to be awarded with the International Visionary Award – earning her a place in next year’s show team line-up.

Also collecting awards on the evening was Angelo Seminara for the AIPP’s Best Commercial Image, Christoph Gaillet

for Best Avant-Garde Image, Frank Apostolopoulos for Best Photo, Rustram Mirasov for Best Men’s Image and Cyrill Hohl for Best Video.

The evening closed with a grand finale where all the hair teams and award winners joined Tony Rizzo and Anthony Mascolo on stage to present representatives from the Fighting Leukemia foundation with this year’s fundraising cheque.

The Alternative Hair Show was founded in 1983 after Sanrizz’s Tony Rizzo and his wife lost their son to leukaemia. To keep his memory alive and to raise money for other children suffering from the disease, the hairdresser organised a one-off charity show. However, its popularity led to more events and throughout its history it has seen many of the world’s greatest hairdressers taking to the stage. To date it has raised over £9 million in support of Leukaemia and Lymphoma research and was awarded charitable status in 2012.

INDUSTRY UPDATE Aveda raises $5.5 million for clean water organisations

Hair maestro Angelo Seminara puts weight behind Italian hairdryer

Aveda has raised $5.5 million (US dollars) this year to benefit more than 40 clean water organisations worldwide. The eco beauty pioneer collected the majority of the funding during April’s Earth Month – an initiative it has runs each year – via a global 24-hour hair-cutting marathon and sales of its Limited Edition Light the Way candle.

Stylists from over 900 salons in 15 countries around the world took part in its Cut-A-Thon, which raised over $75,000 – earning it a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the most money raised through charity haircuts in a 24-hour period.

Aveda professionals in more than 30 countries have collectively raised more than $32 million since 1999 to help support organisations that directly effect environmental change. More than $26 million of this amount has been designated for clean water-related causes.

A professional hair product can’t get a much better endorsement than from one of the best hairdressers in the world. Paul Mitchell hair care is awarded with ‘CoolBrand’ status Paul Mitchell hair care has become the latest professional salon range to be awarded with CoolBrand status. The company joins the likes of Aveda, Toni and Guy, WAH Nails, Tangle Teezer, Dermalogica and SkinCeuticals to make this year’s official list of the UK’s coolest brands – with companies from other industries including Aston Martin, Stella McCartney, Liberty and Sony Music.

Now in its twelve year, The CoolBrands list follows a vote by a combination of 3,000 consumers and a panel of 37 designers, style experts, media personalities and prominent figures from the worlds of television, fashion and music.

The results are published in a hardback coffee table book, which retails for £55.

H&M The British Barbers’ Association has joined forces with The Bluebeards Revenge brand to find the nation’s best wet-shaver.

The competition follows recent research, carried out by the partnership, that highlights the rising popularity of barbers and hairdressers performing traditional cut-throat shaves. According to it findings, 36 per cent (5,076) of the 14,100 barbershops in Britain are now offering the service – up from just 3,384 in August 2012. The stats also reveal that men are visiting their local barber for a wet-shave once a fortnight on average, and that the cost has risen to £17 (from £14 in August ’12). London barbers are most likely to offer wet-shaves (43 per cent) followed by those in the South East (38 per cent) and the North East (37 per cent).

Former TOWIE star Amy Childs has launched her own beauty academy offering therapists the chance to train using her sunless tanning line.

The courses, which will take place in venues around the UK, will cover all aspects of professional tanning – from application to trouble shooting and growing a business.

For anyone sceptical about Childs’ professional beauty credentials, the reality television star is fighting hard to silence her critics: “I’m a beauty therapist first, television personality second,” she says. “I’m passionate about beauty and have been since I first started working as a Saturday girl in a salon when 15 years old.”

So serious is her commitment to the trade that she has taken a hiatus from television for one year while she “builds her brand”, which now includes a full line of professional hair and beauty products ranging from Velcro rollers to strip lashes and salon uniforms.

A self confessed “beauty geek”, Childs says she always sat on the front row of every class at college and strived to be a straight A student.

“I already had that experience of working in a salon so that gave me a head start,” she says. This insider knowledge is something she believes is vital for young people training in Beauty Therapy. And she’s such a keen nurturer of fresh talent that she has recently taken on a schoolgirl to soak up the inner workings of her Brentwood-based salon – just like she did at that age: “My newest girl, Abby, was a real fan of mine and used to come into the salon all the time for beauty treatments,” she says. “I saw she had a real passion for the industry so I invited her to join the team.”

Opening her own academy then to inspire even more young girls to consider Beauty Therapy as a career path seems an obvious move. And with the first courses set to launch this month, more therapists will be able to learn her tricks of the trade nationwide.

The Alan d School of Hairdressing celebrates opening of new West Smithfield premises The Fellowship for British Hairdressing patron d’honneur and show coordinator Ann Herman officially opened Alan d School of Hairdressing’s new West Smithfield academy last month at a celebratory launch party.

Hosted by CEO Alan Hemmings and creative director Edward Hemmings, over 80 guests converged at the new 3,500sq ft premises in the City of London for champagne, canapés and speeches.

While cutting the ribbon, Herman said: “Thank you for coming to the opening of this education centre. I have been closely associated with Alan d for many years.

Education is paramount for the future of British Hairdressing and this school is a fine example.

I’m happy to say that Alan d has played a very important part within the Fellowship for British Hairdressing and I am very proud to declare this school well and truly open.”

Edward Hemmings also thanked guests before inviting HABB chairman Phillip Rogers onto the stage to accept a cheque for £5,000, which the school raised for the industry charity via donations from models.

Jamilla Paul Hair and Beauty marked its 15-year anniversary last month with a celebratory party. The business has won a clutch of awards since its launch in 1998 including Most Wanted’s Local Salon of the Year. Its owner will be thrust into the limelight this month when a new reality television show airs on MTV starring her as a mentor for would-be hair and beauty professionals.

Scotland’s Byron Hairdressing smashed all previous fundraising targets last month when its team collected £3,300 for Maggie’s cancer care charity. The salon has been raising money for the cause for 13 years and has now single-handedly amassed over £20K. This year its stylists dressed up in ‘20s-inspired attire, held a raffle and offered free haircuts in return for donations.

Over 30 team members from Marc Antoni took part in London’s largest charity cycle event last month to raise money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. The team has raised over £6,500 to help achieve 100 per cent survival and quality of life for all blood cancer patients since January.

Jazz hands How Jazz Smedley is making professional nail services appeal to younger fans

A

t 17 years old Jazz Smedley has already experienced career highs that many women can only dream of. Having cut her teeth working for her parents’ business Nail Harmony UK, the young industry star has amassed a dazzling portfolio having manicured a host of celebrity clients and assisted Marian Newman backstage at London Fashion Week.

Moreover, after completing two years of training followed by a rigorous four-day intensive programme in the US, she recently also made the grade as a Nail Harmony’s youngest ever educator – a feat that she describes as, “the best experience of my life.”

It seems fitting then, as a paragon of hard-working teenagers, that Jazz is heading up a unique nail brand created for 16 to 25 year olds.

This September saw the official launch of All That Jazz, as the range is called, which comprises 36 of the young tech’s own personally mixed nail lacquer shades alongside treatments and uniquely scented manicure products.

The full product range was first unveiled at Olympia Beauty inside an undercover burlesque-inspired stand created especially for the brand. There

it was met with “an amazing response” thanks to its unique colours, quality formulations and quirky packaging.

Central to the line are the nail lacquers, which can be used during professional manicures and pedicures or retailed to clients for £9.99 each. And while that pushes the product into a similar price band as brands targeted at an older market, Jazz says this was essential to reflect the quality: “We spent months working on the formulations and colours and the end product is really fantastic,” she says. “Our colours are animated and really standout while the polish itself is so hardwearing that I have personally worn it for four weeks without a single chip. The coverage is amazing too – even with one coat.”

Jazz is equally enthusiastic about the manicure product line. Comprising various skin and nail care products, clients can choose from three unique scents that set the system apart including Chocolate Orange, Apple and Cucumber and the botanical-based Captivate. “The manicure range is completely different to anything else on the market,” she says. “We really wanted to steer away from the traditional lavender and peppermint scented products to create something really unique.”

As the daughter of celebrated nail tech Geogie Smedley and her husband Jason – the driving force behind Nail Harmony UK – some might say that Jazz’s foray into the world of nails was written in the stars. The teenager herself, however, is the first to admit that she only truly saw its potential as career around four or five

years ago. “I wasn’t interested in nails at all until I was about 12 or 13 years old,” she says. “Then one day I just decided to give it a go and afterwards I just couldn’t put it down. I realised that nails are a really important part of a woman’s overall look and that really appealed to me.”

It is this side of the profession that inspires Jazz the most. As a keen follower of fashion, she is focused on offering both salons and clients the most in-demand nail colours available. This is also bolstered by her personal approach to customer service, which she continues tirelessly via social media. “I’m very fashion conscious and look at all the shows,” she says. “But I also speak to people on Facebook and Twitter to constantly find out what they are looking for in terms of nail polish and products. I think it’s important to give people exactly what they want.”

So with that in mind, what do Jazz and the Nail Harmony team hope to achieve with the brand? “When we’ve fully launched into the UK market we hope to go global,” she says. “I would love All That Jazz to be as big as the top end brands and be recognised in the same way one day. It’s a fantastic product and I think we have all the right ingredients, it’s just up to us now to spread the word.”

High brow Axiom’s Waxing for Barbers course promises to bring your brow and ear trim service to a whole new level

W

ith modern men only too aware that good grooming extends beyond the hair on top of their heads, it looks like the days of fluffy ears, nasal tufts and the monobrow are numbered.

Many barbers already offer customers a complimentary brow and ear trim at the end of a haircut, using either the scissors or clippers to tame unruly tendrils. But waxing is a quick and simple to learn alternative that gets cleaner, longer lasting results and is easy to up sell.

Salon owner and men’s waxing expert, Andy Rouillard, runs the treatment rooms at Axiom Bodyworks in Basingstoke and struck a deal with the barbershop upstairs: “Although waxing gives much better results than trimming, getting clients from

the barbers chair to the beauty couch was a battle we didn’t look set to win... so we decided to bring the wax pot onto the shop floor,” he says. “We trained all of our barbers in the use of peelable wax and have now added basic facial waxing to our list of in-chair services. The response has been phenomenal with customers and stylists alike. It takes less than three minutes at the end of a haircut, can be done on the spot, and adds an extra £5 to £10 to the stylists’ wage packet.”

It was so successful that Rouillard decided to offer other salons the opportunity to train in the technique themselves. The Axiom Waxing for Barbers course is aimed at modern barbershops and salons that wish to extend their in-chair male grooming

services beyond haircuts and wet shaves, to include nostril, ear, mid-brow and neck waxing.

All waxing is carried out using the latest generation of peelable waxes and can be performed in the chair without the need for any extra floor space or costly equipment. Set-up costs and ongoing product expenses are minimal and offer a high profit margin while training can be completed in less than half a day.

Inside our decorations are always very tasteful – our displays are all focused around the many Aveda gifting options – and with our proximity to Hampstead Heath, we tend to go with a woodland at Christmas theme with lots of big logs and lush greenery.”

Consumers want convenience and choice that online shopping provides, so keep up with the trends and don’t miss out on this opportunity.”

Run a competition incentive

Launch a quick-fix winter menu While some clients are looking for hair colour and gel manicures to last them through the season, others want help getting ready for specific events – so quick fix beautifying services can be a highly popular option. “Last Christmas we launched an autumn/winter service menu, which included treatment packages and a party menu offering nine hair styling choices at a set price of £25,” says Montague. “This proved hugely popular and it’s certainly something we’ll look to expand on this Christmas.”

of Facebook and Twitter because creating a buzz online can easily transfer to the salon too. Jonas Larsen, sales and marketing manager for Facebookbased booking system Book ‘n’ Bloom, believes social media is the best way to generate excitement around the busy Christmas period. “With Facebook, it’s all about engagement with your customers,” he says. “Working with both salons and social media we’ve learned that customers share your brand not because they like you, but because they like their friends. So aim to build on this by inviting your fans to post pictures of retail products from your salon that they’d like to give to one of their friends. You can then select one at random and gift their friend with the chosen item. This will increase online activity and provide free publicity for your business.”

Send an email Likewise, utilising your email database by sending out special promotions is a great way to fill up your appointment books and empty your retail areas come December. “An easy and effective way to promote Christmas offers is by creating a festive e-blast for your database,” says Chandler. “Send them a festive newsletter detailing all your Christmas offers and if possible, include an incentive to entice your customers further – even if it’s a glass of mulled wine when they visit in December.”

ith the threat of dermatitis affecting up to 70 per cent of hairdressers, investing in a preventative measure such as Reamin hand protection cream should be a business priority for all salon owners.

“Each salon professional should create this habit of regular skin protection,” says Hesse.

n such a fast-paced industry as the salon world, keeping one step ahead of the rest is vital if you want to be perceived as a forward-thinking brand.

With this in mind, continual education is key to help develop your staff so that your business can flourish from the inside out.

“Westrow has developed greatly over the last 26 years from a small city-centre salon to a group of seven across Yorkshire – with three more in the immediate pipeline. During this time the need for educational structure has also increased.

Training is at the heart of what we do.

“Education is key to our growth and strategy and an integral part of the business. Not only do we train our staff to understand and develop the Westrow way, but we also educate on platform and via courses outside of the business too. In 2011 we introduced a bespoke management training programme called ‘So you want to run Westrow?’ which was created for existing managers and franchisees.

Meanwhile, potential ones throughout the group are also cherry-picked accordingly.

Training is designed to foster an in-depth understanding of the business and is delivered as a series of days over the year by my business partner, Marc Westerman, as well as outside experts such as Nergish Wadia-Austin and Robert Soutar.

“We encourage our staff to be forward thinking in all areas. We train every

member on the importance of the brand and encourage imaginative thinking so that Westrow can flourish across all levels of the business. New recruits are continually supported to develop a practical understanding of the salon environment and the implementation of performance review forms covers all stages of the employee journey. receptionist and administration staff, through to monitoring performance across all of out stylists including weekly turnover averages, number of clients, number of technical services, spend per head, treatments, retail turnover and client retention over a three-month period. All of these encourage productive performance across each level of the business.

“As we have expanded the brand we have developed our business and

educational strategy to ensure that we are always at the forefront of innovation, which is why we’ve also opened our own academy, Westrow House.

“At present we have a separate training company that delivers NVQ Levels one to three, with nine assessors within the Westrow group qualified to sign off assistants in the workplace and three more undertaking training programmes to do so. We envisage education to be one of the major growth areas for Westrow in the future and opening the academy means that we’ll be able to deliver NVQ Levels one to three, teaching practical and theory skills in an amazing environment to both our own students as well as external ones undertaking apprenticeships from other salons.

“Our aim is to support our staff through each stage of their Westrow journey.

And with the launch of our educational academy, we hope to spread the Westrow word even further. Our aim is to focus heavily on developing our educational offerings to help raise standards in the hairdressing industry. air and Beauty Therapy is one of the few sectors within the UK where staff training and development is now imbedded, yet the way people learn is changing across all industries.
