here’s one thing that most successful salon owners in the industry have in common: passion. And if we were to devise a list of the country’s very best hair and beauty businesses, it would undoubtedly be made up entirely of those with passionate teams behind them. In this industry, having a zealous desire to excel is what separates the average from the magnificent. And this month that sentiment is echoed throughout the entire contents of this issue. We were lucky enough to interview Scottish super stylist and salon owner Tracey Devine, who is among the few female hairdressers to reach the top of the hair game. While she hasn’t been nominated for the British Hairdresser of the Year title (yet), her 20year dedication to the industry has seen her amass a huge haul of awards, an aweinspiring portfolio and critical acclaim from her peers. Turn to page 46 to find out how she’s become one of the most successful female hairdressers in the country and prepare to be inspired. Entering industry competitions is always a hot topic inside industry circles. But this month, with the launch of the BHAs and BBAs as well as the results of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy regional finals, the subject seems all the more relevant than usual.

The David Beckham effect: Beautiful Britain report reveals boom in male grooming market

A

new report published by Salon Services has revealed that a boom in the male grooming market is leading overall industry growth – despite salons reducing their prices across the board. The second annual Beautiful Britain report, which contains figures taken from 2,618 nationwide respondents, reveals that over half of the country’s hair and beauty salons (53 per cent) have seen an increase in male clients walking through their doors in the past year. The burgeoning market is most resonant in London, the West Midlands, South West England and Wales, where business owners reported a 60 per cent increase. Driving the trend is men wanting to look good for themselves (65 per cent) while 19 per cent do it for their partners. David Beckham meanwhile is still the most popular grooming icon for most men (53 per cent) while former TOWIE star Mark Wright was cited by 20 per cent. While not all salons are tapping into the trend by offering men-friendly services

(36 per cent) just over a quarter plan to address this issue over the next 12 months by making additions to their menus. When it comes to the total hair and beauty market, average prices for both male and female treatments have gone down or remained the same, despite inflation. The overall price for a haircut – the UK’s most popular salon treatment – is an average £24 for women, down from £25 in 2011, and £16 for men (£3 less). Salons in the North East offer the cheapest in the country charging an average £19.10 and £12.30 respectively while London business rake in the most commanding an average £31.50 and £24 per service. While haircuts remain the UK’s top treatment for both sexes, the report shows that other beauty treatments are gaining popularity. Women are booking in for some services more often than they did in 2011 with the average time between facials and hair removal standing at 27 days instead of 36 and 32 respectively.

Meanwhile, they are visiting the salon for a manicure every 31 days instead of 36. However, they are now leaving longer between their tanning appointments (every 36 days compared to 26 in 2011) and pedicures (37 days as opposed to 27). Alan Revitt, Salon Services’ commercial and marketing director, comments: “This is undoubtedly a challenging period of time for our industry, but it’s remarkable to see the resilience and innovation that salons have shown in adapting to the new conditions. While some regions have struggled with reduced spend and custom, new trends and markets continue to present opportunities for entrepreneurial salons.” He adds: “Competition for custom is fiercer than ever so it’s crucial that salons stay abreast of the latest tastes and spending habits in their region so they can tailor their treatments and pricing structures accordingly. Cross-selling and offering add-ons can be a good revenue stream for salons that create the right packages.”

INDUSTRY UPDATE Industry insiders call for government to slash VAT rate following 2014 Budget The National Hairdressers’ Federation (NHF) says it welcomes several aspects of the government’s 2014 Budget but has voiced “disappointment” over its failure to reduce VAT. While it promised to waive the first £2,000 of the national insurance bill for all businesses in the country, raise personal allowance for income tax and reduce corporation tax for those making profits over £300,000, NHF president Mark Coray said reducing the VAT would help restore confidence on the high street. “At first assessment the new £2,000 employment allowance seems like a very positive measure – anything that reduces the cost of taking on staff is going to be welcomed especially by small and micro businesses,” he comments. “The chancellor’s further cut in Corporation Tax from 2015 is also welcome. INDUSTRY UPDATE Top hairdressers join ghd tour to launch new eclipse styler Zoe Irwin, Ken Picton, Kay McIntyre, Bruno Marc and Errol Douglas joined team ghd last month for a nationwide seven-day tour to introduce hairdressers to the brand’s new eclipse styler. The top stylists were given access to the new tool several months before its official launch and were present to unveil their styling secrets to packed auditoriums around the country. During each show the crowds were shown the styler’s capabilities – on even the most challenging hair – live on stage while the ghd art team also showcased a range of inspirational looks. “This has been an amazing tour,” says head of education, Jo Robertson. “I haven’t seen a reaction like this since ghd first launched twelve years ago. Saks A Team announced for 2013 Saks Hair and Beauty has announced the names of 10 chosen stylists that make up the salon group’s A Team 2013. Those making the final line-up include Kiran Bagha from Heston, Rachael Hall from Lytham and Scunthorpe’s Nick Waldron. Those selected will spend the next 12 months under the expert instruction of creative director Alison Dace and the Saks Art Team who will help nurture their skills. The stylists will also be immersed in photographic work, seminars and events and session hairdressing to boost their creativity. “The Saks A Team is all about creativity, cultivating skills and lots of hard work,” says Dace. “The opportunity to join is open to any stylist in the Saks salon network, but rigorous testing ensures only a few are granted a place in the exclusive team each year.”

Forty-two salons selected for L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final Over 455 salon teams battled it out across seven regional finals last month for a place in the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final. Now in its fifty-eighth year, the competition saw hairdressing super teams from across the length and breadth of the UK producing fashion-forward looks based on AW13 trends live on models. Hosted by television presenter Zoe Hardman, each regional final climaxed with the unveiling of four winners in the women’s L’Oréal Colour Trophy category and two for the Men’s Image Award, who will go on to compete in the national leg of the competition in London this June. One of the most hotly anticipated events was for London-based salons and took place in the capital’s Park Plaza hotel. Among the winners included Rush, Epsom; Toni and Guy, Regents Street; Toni and Guy, Chiswick; and Brooks and Brooks, London. Meanwhile, Jamie Stevens’ Kensington team and Elements in Hampstead triumphed in the men’s category. The high-energy event also awarded five of each region’s most talented young colourists who will compete for a place on the L’Oréal Colour Academy 2013 programme. Social media etiquette Post online images of clients without permission at your peril, warns Gemma Ward

A

rather unexpected thing happened to me last month when I visited a local beauty salon. A ‘before and after’ snap of my face in all its poorly lit glory ended up on Twitter. And this was posted without my consent and to my absolute horror in full view of thousands of followers. This may seem dramatic, but let me explain: I despise having my photograph taken at the best of times. So to suffer this intrusion in what should be one of the most private of private places (behind the closed door of the beauty room) was going beyond the pale. The entire incident got me thinking about social media etiquette and how salon owners should be treating their clients online. I’m all for helping local businesses promote their treatments and even I’ve overcome my photo phobia in the past to pose for requests (albeit from the back to show off a new hairstyle or from the wrist down after a manicure). I think using Facebook and Twitter as a real-time salon portfolio is quite a shrewd marketing strategy – particularly for services that yield dramatic results. However, it’s one thing for salon professionals to ask if they can take a client’s photo for their records and quite another to then post that image online without asking permission. The law about image copyright and

social media isn’t as black and white as one might expect. As a photographer in a public space, you have complete rights to any image you take. However, in a private space, such as the salon where a client is paying for your service, the area of posting their image (basically with advertising

intentions) becomes very grey indeed. So how do you ensure that your business doesn’t get into hot water? The best advice is to be absolutely sure that you have any client’s consent before you post anything about them online: “We ask

all clients to sign a medical consent form that informs them that images have to be taken for insurance purposes and may be used in marketing,” says Karen Betts, MD for Nouveau Contour. “However, we also always double check with the client before posting any images onto something like Twitter and we ask all clients to sign a personal release form.” It’s also imperative that staff managing social media accounts are fully aware of the salon’s online business policy. “We expect everyone who participates in online commentary to understand and follow some simple but essential guidelines,” says Steve Rowbottom, director for North England salon group Westrow. “It’s paramount to ask permission to publish or report on client conversations or images that are meant to be private. In any business, communication is a key aspect of its success, so simple steps such as these, which show that it has guidelines in place, ensures the confidence of your clients when using them in your promotions.” If you want my advice, avoid a similar scenario to the one aforementioned at all costs. Even if posting images without a client’s consent isn’t illegal, it is almost certainly unethical. I for one will not be visiting the said local salon ever again. I’ll also be hiding all the more whenever the camera comes out in future.

Art attack Why the UK’s trendiest salons are adding nail art to their menus

T

here was a time when many a stylish woman would not be seen in nail art. But five or six years ago edgy high fashion designers began requesting conceptual manicure designs for the catwalk. And now nail art looks that were once the reserve of black women and East End hipsters have become highly sought-after among the mainstream. The trend became a catalyst for a clutch of trendy nail bars, which began cropping up across the capital. At the forefront was WAH Nails. Realising that the nail art she’d been wearing for years was about to hit the mainstream, founder Sharmadean Reid opened the first salon in Dalston in August ‘09. It gained instant recognition from the consumer press and it now has branches in Topshop on Oxford Street and Dublin’s Harvey Nichols while its team of techs have become regular backstage fixtures at London Fashion Week. But it isn’t just WAH that has made a business purely from tiny nail art creations: techs from all over the country are making more money from bespoke designs than they ever could from standard file and paint jobs. “By introducing a couple of pieces of nail art, a manicure can be dramatically transformed from the ordinary

The nail sector itself is at the height of a boom. Ever since the launch of gel-polish products such as Gelish and Shellac, the consumer’s passion for enhancements has been reignited – albeit in a more natural nail-looking way. And that coupled with the rise of nail art has sparked the kind of demand from consumers that the rest of the beauty industry can only dream of. So if you haven’t already considered the benefits of offering the service, now is a good time to start. “As a salon working with nail art, your clients will certainly stand out from the crowd and naturally promote the reputation of your business for creative nail design – which is the hot-topic right now,” says Malik. “People love the freedom nail art gives to creating their own unique look and the flexibility to change the appearance of their nails.” Introducing nail art doesn’t need to be a huge step for the business either. Super summer services Salon owner Paul Falltrick shares his top tips on boosting business throughout the summer months

S

ummer can be a tricky time for salon owners as they tend to experience a peak in business at the start of the season followed by a lull while clients go on holiday. However, when planned and marketed correctly, there’s no reason why your business can’t thrive throughout...

Predict client patterns In order to tailor your summer plan to your clients, you need to first explore their habits and identify patterns in their routines. Look back at your figures from previous years and you should see trends emerging – of course there may be some changes, but it’ll give you a great indication as to what strategy might work for your salon throughout the season. As a general rule, salons can expect to see a peak at the start of summer – around May-time – followed by a decline in August and then another rise by autumn. Therefore you need to look at ways to raise the average customer spend before this quiet period whether that be recommending moisture treatments to prepare the hair for summer or the perfect retail products for clients heading away. Plus, always launch incentives for clients to return after their holiday.

Get prepared Once you’ve identified patterns in your client’s behaviour during the summer months it’s important to act upon your findings. At our salon we definitely see a pick-up in the colour market at the start of summer with clients opting for highlights to go lighter and brighter, so we make sure we stock up on our Matrix colours in preparation. We monitor the trends and shift our stock balance figure over to summer tones, minimising the darker and autumnal shades we’re holding. This month we’ll also begin to alter the entire mood of the salon, changing the music and updating our retail hotspots with the newest summer offerings – the whole business takes on a summer-like

feel-good vibe.

Top-up on training With the development of the internet, it’s so much easier for clients to find out about the latest products and treatments, so now it’s even more important for your team to be constantly training and clued-up on the most current launches. In order to guide clients through the summer season, ensure you book on top-up training sessions. Get a seasonal retail MOT Your retail displays should reflect the seasonal needs of clients’ hair, so before spring turns to summer, ensure you give your salon a retail MOT. Market your summer services Once pre-planning is complete, the next step in your summer strategy should be to shout about your offerings – there’s little point in predicting patterns and stocking

up if you’re not showcasing your seasonal services to clients. We’re fortunate to be located in a shopping centre, so we place posters around the interior to draw customers inside. Then in the salon itself we create seasonal displays and put up posters and leaflets to visually raise awareness of what’s on offer. Depending of course on whether it works for your salon, email marketing can be another great way to notify clients of your services. But if you go down this route, make sure your database is up-todate. The key is to always ask yourself whether the marketing techniques you’re using will resonate with your clientele. For example, if they’re not particularly computer savvy then an email blast may not get results whereas a personalised mail campaign might. Preparation and personalisation are vital for success. Simply Devine Gemma Ward meets Scotland’s most ambitious female hairdresser

T

racey Devine is on a mission to inspire female hairdressers. With a mountain of awards under her belt (she’s in the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year having won the award three years in a row), the hairdresser is among the most successful in the UK. But it hasn’t been easy. As many female hairdressers will attest, when stylists reach the very top of the hair game, it is almost entirely dominated by men. “We need to see more females up for the British Hairdresser of the Year title,” says Devine. “Someone told me that it takes a woman four years longer on average to become well-known in the industry and that’s so frustrating. We’re just as talented and it’s time we saw a change.” Despite being of the fairer sex, there’s absolutely no disputing the Scottish salon owner’s intrinsic flair for hairdressing. She’s a triple threat – meaning she can cut, colour and style to awe-inspiring proportions. But even more than that, she’s a successful salon owner with two lucrative businesses, global ambassador for Affinage, UK guest artist for Kevin Murphy and an inspirational speaker and educator. Devine can also create mesmerising photography, preferring editorial work to any other as she’s “instantly at home behind the camera”. Her images appear effortlessly cool – the result of a decade-long love affair with high fashion magazines (she admits to spending over £1,000 a year on “everything from ID to Another Magazine) – and they’ve not only helped earn her a raft of awards but a

place among hairdressing’s elite too. Of course there’s only one route to the top of the British hairdressing industry: hard work and determination. And Devine has bags of both. She’s a self-confessed

perfectionist and workaholic who’s completely driven by success. “It can be quite infectious,” she says. “The more you achieve the hungrier you are for more; once you’re on that wheel it’s very difficult to get off.” But owning a highly successful

business wasn’t exactly written in the stars. The daughter of a working class family growing up in the small town of Elgin in the Scottish Highlands, Devine never considered going to university. She did however always know she wanted to be a hairdresser. At 15, after following her mother’s orders to find a Saturday job, she was taken on by Elgin’s Clancy’s, which she says was “the coolest salon in town.” When Devine left school the salon gave her an apprenticeship; it was then that she realised she’d found her calling. “I picked up hairdressing almost instantaneously,” she says. “It was almost as if the scissors were an extension of my hand. Within nine months I was running a full column and spinning out a flattop (a trendy men’s haircut in the ‘80s) every 15 minutes. I saw equal amounts of male and female clients, which stood me in good stead.” Even after completing her stylist training, Devine didn’t realise the real potential of hairdressing. That was until she visited London’s Salon International at the age of 18. “Before that I only wanted to be good,” she says. “But when I saw the Hall of Fame, I knew I wanted my work to be up there with the very best in the industry.” So on her return to Scotland, even more determined than before, she pushed herself to be the very best in the salon. And after a few months, the young hairdresser inevitably outgrew Elgin and the small town salon where she’d trained. In the early ‘90s with no money and a one-year-old daughter in tow, Devine

upped sticks from her hometown and fled to the nearest city: Aberdeen. “It got to a point where I knew I needed to be in a city so I filled up some black bin bags and decided to move on a whim,” she says. “My parents thought I was crazy – my mother was in tears. But I told her not to worry and that I’d make sure she was proud of me in five years.” As promised, it only took around that time for Devine to become established in her new home and set up a business. The first Angels salon opened in 1997 and was a means to help the hairdresser gain the profile she ultimately craved. “I wanted to push my profile and knew that I would need money,” she says. “That was really the reason why I always dreamed of having my own business.” Despite having limited knowledge of running a salon (although ever the perfectionist, Devine did go back to college to study an HND in Business Management), she carved out an extremely successful enterprise in a short space of time. The Angels concept was so popular in fact that Devine had to

open another salon in 2004 to cope with demand. Then four years ago, moving the business forward, she opened another salon in North Aberdeenshire’s Ellon while closing the original two to launch one super flagship in the city centre. Today the city-based Angels salon in Aberdeen employs 16 stylists and sees more than 1,000 clients walking through its doors every month. Devine puts its popularity down to excellent customer service and consistency, which she believes regularly wins it new fans as well as retaining many of the same clients they’ve been servicing for 15 years. “Each client is extremely important and every time they visit the salon their experience has to be as good as the last,” she says. “Yes it’s a big, cool, trendy salon; but each client is made to feel really welcome and we pride ourselves in offering hands-on customer care.”

It’s clear that Devine is absolutely dedicated to keeping the salon a cut above. “I invest a lot in keeping standards high – we have weekly one-to-ones with staff, ask for regular feedback from clients and enlist mystery shoppers. We also phone new clients to check how they found their visit; I think this gives the salon a nice personal touch.” Meanwhile, with such a strong leader at the helm, Devine has cultivated a strong team of ambitious hairdressers keen to follow in her footsteps. Each person is encouraged to excel while the salon also invests heavily in ongoing education. “The most rewarding thing about what I do is seeing my team grow and watching them win,” she says. “Last year our stylist Ryan Harris was chosen for the FAME Team and it was an amazing feeling seeing him on stage. It’s lovely to see them doing well

from your business and watching them prosper in life.” Since starting the business, Devine admits her feet haven’t touched the ground. Currently she spends two days each week in the salon with clients and the rest of the time managing the team, travelling, educating, working with Affinage and Kevin Murphy as well as creating stunning hair photography. She also has three children who keep everything in perspective: “I could work 24 hours a day but having a family has kept my head in the right place,” she says. But for now, Devine is hell-bent on bringing the Scottish Hairdresser of the Year title back to the salon via her creative director Janer Stewart, who won the accolade in 2008. Meanwhile, she remains as focused as ever on retaining the success of the salon: “the rest can’t happen unless there’s money in the till.” And if she continues with the same unwavering determination she’s shown for the past 20 years, we have no doubt that we’ll be seeing Devine among the British Hairdresser of the Year nominees soon.
