F

or a sector so focused on physical appearances, the UK salon industry’s dedication to charity, cruelty-free produce and sustainable business practice may come as a surprise to many.

My inbox is always full of messages sharing various acts of goodwill. But over the past few weeks, I’ve been inundated with even more stories of benevolence than usual. From salon owners making a serious pledge to put environmental business practice at the top of their agendas to product houses promising to donate thousands of pounds’ worth of profits to help those in need, more and more hair and beauty companies are jumping on board to help make the world a better place to be.

Take haircare brand Paul Mitchell, which not only continues with the same anti-animal testing pledge as it did when it launched 30 years ago but actively encourages others to do the same. Last month CEO and co-founder John Paul DeJoria flew into London to host a special press conference highlighting the brand’s work with Cruelty Free International. Following its decision to refuse to sell its products in China until the country’s mandatory animal testing policy is lifted, the globally successful brand is flying the flag for ethical practice over profits everywhere.

Wella Professionals, meanwhile, is on a mission to help those around the world with limited prospects get off to a flying start. The company has activated its global partnership with Unicef in the UK and Ireland and is asking

salon professionals to get involved in its long-term programme to transform the lives of young people in emerging countries through hairdressing education and mentoring. Its main aim for this year is to help adolescents living in poverty in Brazil forge careers by offering them the possibility to train to become hairdressers. For each specially marked Wella product, the company will provide funding for one half-hour training session. Meanwhile, fundraising activity throughout a variety of salons is set to raise even more money for the world’s children.

Last but by no means least, Aveda will host its annual Earth Month from April 1 to raise money for the Global Greengrants Fund. The brand has always put environmental ethics at the forefront of its philosophy. And to date, this particular scheme has netted over $26million for clean-water projects – giving hope to thousands of people without easy access to sanitary water around the world.

And this isn’t to mention the thousands of other companies that put charity and the environment high on their agendas. So whether you partner with a brand with strong ethical policies or decide to set up your own campaign, it’s time to show clients that visiting the salon isn’t purely about decoration: it’s about caring for the world they live in too.

Nail Harmony’s UK team marks the company’s success with a celebratory party and prize draw

he directors of Nail Harmony UK hosted a celebratory party last month to thank their loyal staff and customers for a triumphant year of growth.

Around 150 guests descended on the company’s hometown of Chigwell in Essex to attend the bash, which took place inside an imposing chandelier-lit ballroom at the area’s Prince Regent Hotel.

Attendees – which included educators, sub-distributors, clients and trade journalists – arrived in their droves to toast Nail Harmony’s success. Guests walked down a celebrity-inspired red carpet before being offered a choice of champagne, cocktails and canapés by a troop of topless waiters.

After networking with their industry peers, the crowd was invited to take part in an “interactive brand quiz” and live car draw for a chance to win a series of Nail Harmony prizes.

UK directors Georgie and Jason Smedley, who introduced Nail Harmony to British and Irish salons in 2010, took to the stage to speak of the company’s burgeoning success. Since launching in the Middle East in 2009 with its hero gel-polish line Gelish, Nail Harmony has become a prominent professional brand in a range of countries around the globe.

Thanking its teams, customers and the press for their support, the husband and wife duo spoke of the brand’s journey from its original inception by founder Danny

Haile to its development into a leading nail market contender today.

But the climax of the evening was the announcement of the winner of a live car draw, concluding a competition in Scratch magazine to win a fully customised Gelish-branded Citroen C1. The Smedleys presented the top prize to Natalie Blankley, owner of Luton’s Get Gellished, who was able to drive away with the perfect advert for her business. In addition, several runners up also received hampers filled with Gelish products.

Following the proceedings, guests were entertained by a live DJ set and dancing before leaving with goodie bags filled with nail and beauty products from a clutch of professional brands.

The sector’s sales grew by 11 per cent during 2012 in comparison to the total beauty market’s growth of 5 per cent. The perils of the consumer press While a glowing review in a glossy magazine can do wonders for business, incorrect facts can be detrimental to the entire industry.

P

eople who claim that there is no such thing as bad publicity clearly don’t work in the salon industry.

Since becoming a trade journalist specialising in this domain, I’ve witnessed more industry run-ins with the consumer press than I care to remember. Sadly, badly researched or even scaremongering articles written about salon services are a regular occurrence. All it takes is for a newspaper or magazine reporter to get the wrong end of the stick and a publication can hit the newsstands containing incorrect information that’s detrimental to thousands of businesses.

Last month was a case in point. In the Sunday Times’ Style Magazine, a journalist wrote a small review-style piece weighing up the differences between soak-off gel competitors CND Shellac and Nail Harmony Gelish.

Her editorial was littered with errors on everything from how the products are applied and removed to their consistency and the number of colour options available.

The piece sparked outrage from nail technicians and salon owners up and down the county. “This article is bad for business,” exclaimed one via a post on Facebook while another retorted, “I had to read it twice as I thought I was

seeing things.”

Sadly, this type of inaccuracy isn’t an isolated incident. And it’s unlikely that it’ll be the last time a journalist writes an article

that has a negative slant on a professional salon service. From keratin hair treatments to the fumes expelled during spray tanning, it’s important to be well versed on all the facts so you can offer clients unparalleled expert guidance. “As a

professional taking the decision to use a brand – no matter which you choose – you should be educated in how to use it,” says Samantha Sweet, communications director for Sweet Squared, which distributes CND in the UK. “When you are educated and armed with correct and factual knowledge you can very easily counteract incorrect information.” She adds: “Education gives you the confidence and know-how to refute an incorrect point or add to a correct one.”

Of course the issue swings both ways so remember for every bit of bad press there’s hopefully another glowing review. Although it can be frustrating when journalists taint an article with incorrect information, a positive recommendation from a key beauty editor can be all a startup business needs to grow into a formidable and sought after brand.

While the PR departments of product houses do all they can to stop publications printing incorrect information, remember that it’s far better to work with the press than against them. Sweet concludes: “Always try to see the positive side. If I had phoned the journalist in question and shouted at her for writing incorrect information she may never write about us again. However, if I thanked her and invited her to have a CND Shellac experience, guess who will be more informed for future editorials on our brand and guess who may just write about us again? I will leave you to guess which route I took.”

Glowing reviews Monitor what your clients are saying about you online and reap the rewards, says Shortcuts’ Tom Bentley-Taylor

t is easier than ever before for existing clients to post a salon review online. Equipped with smart phones, many can do it before they’ve even left your premises.

“It’s also easy for potential clients to find reviews when they want to read about what other people have experienced.

Today there are a lot of websites and social media channels for people to post comments. And Google now picks up a lot of these reviews, both the positive and negative, and highlights them on its results page. They appear near to the top of the results – so often the user sees them before anything else. So as a business owner, how are you keeping track?

“In today’s digital world it isn’t enough to just instigate a pen and paper survey every now and again. Clients want to share their experiences straightaway. But by effectively managing the feedback you receive online, it’s easier to see which aspects of your business are working and any areas you can improve on. If there is something a client feels isn’t perfect you should be able to act on it swiftly to turn that client’s opinion around. That person is then highly likely to share their good experience.

“Keep in mind that an unhappy client will tell eight to 16 people on average while 20 per cent will tell 20 people or more.

Getting negative reviews isn’t always a cause for panic though: if the complaint is dealt with quickly and satisfactorily it can work well for your business. A whopping 95 per cent of clients with a complaint will do business with you again if you resolve

their problem straightaway. And this helps give your business integrity and make clients feel valued.

Picture perfect Why Justine Collins is the make-up artist every top hairdresser should have on speed dial

J

ustine Collins is surely the hardest working make-up artist in the industry. When she’s not travelling around the globe working on shoots, meeting clients and hunting out future trends, she’s busy running her beauty boutique, sourcing models for her agency, making brides look beautiful for their big day or designing oneoff pieces for her bespoke fashion line.

Now living in the picturesque Cotswolds, the 37-year-old began her diverse career in the capital. There she studied fashion design and pattern cutting while spending her weekends working as a consultant on a make-up counter. After graduating, she took a full-time position at Estée Lauder’s Birmingham flagship – cementing her future in cosmetics. “That was the moment I fell in love with makeup,” she says. “Giving someone help applying the right products in the correct way can change somebody – it gives them confidence and a new radiance.”

Collins went onto work for the likes of Yves Saint Laurent and Sophora, climbing her way up from make-up artist to in-store trainer. And it was this transition into trend-led brands that re-ignited her love of fashion – leading her down the session road. “After this experience I knew I wanted to get into the trend side of the industry,” she says. “I’ve always been an avid reader of all the glossies, and I knew that I could do make-up on a freelance basis if I was able to make the right contacts.”

Aged 24, Collins began contacting local photographers offering her services for test shoots. Working with hair, beauty and fashion specialists, she soon picked up a bulging list of contacts and regular paid work came rolling in. But while many make-up artists go down the fashion or music route, Collins began working with high profile hairdressers and large hair and

beauty product houses enabling her to enter salon industry circles.

“There were some people that gave me my big break and I’ll always be grateful to them,” she says. “One was Brenda O Sullivan who was creative director for Regis International at the time, and the others were Royston Blythe and Nick Malenko. We worked together for about eight years on amazing awardwinning imagery and thanks to them my work always got into the British Hairdressing Awards finals and on high profile magazine covers.”

But as the corporate work came flooding in, Collins was also introduced to the celebrity world by fellow make-up artist Gary Cockerill. The union led her to work on Katie Price’s first wedding and a range of other television jobs with the likes of Kate Garraway and Rachel Hunter. Meanwhile, she continued building a weekend wedding business, helping brides look their best for their big day.

Despite all of this, the make-up artist never slowed down or stopped striving to better her craft. And after spending so many years working with premium brands and recommending the best products to

clients, she wanted to go back to her retail roots and open her own beauty boutique.

So in 2010, armed with an extensive knowledge of the industry, Pink Gloss opened its doors in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, offering a range of professional salon treatments alongside a treasure trove of top brands. “It’s a beautiful shop in the Cotswolds that’s just a lovely, friendly place to be,” she says. “It retails skincare, make-up and fragrance for both men and women while also offering bridal hair and make-up, facials, body treatments and manicures. We don’t give customers the hard sell, but offer friendly advice instead. We have lots of regular customers and a growing number of male fans too.”

INTERVIEW

With so many years’ experience working across a broad spectrum of areas, Collins’ work with hairdressers has also expanded. Today her input doesn’t just end with make-up: as a trained fashion designer who creates special one-off pieces, she also styles shoots with bespoke garments to help clients achieve their vision. In addition, she also helps clients find the ideal models through her bespoke agency created especially for those that find it difficult to cast the right girls. “Clients come to me and need models with a certain hair length or colour but want the versatility to be able to cut and colour,” she says. “This can often be a tricky area as a lot of models don’t want to change their look and this means that hairdressers often have to work with the girl’s hair as it is. I match models to clients so they can produce their vision; this is vital so they can achieve a collection that they’re proud of.”

Since launching the agency as a sideline around six years ago, Collins has helped the likes of Abacus in Bewdley win the L’Oreal Colour Trophy. As well as taking charge of the make-up for their winning entry in 2010, she also sourced the model and made a bespoke dress to tie in with the complete look. “The model was amazing and I knew she had the potential to win,” she says. “I convinced her to let the team cut her long blonde hair into a dark purdy style. She looked incredible.”

Over her career Collins has worked with “around 100” big hair industry names including Marcello Moccia at Room 97, Stuart Holmes and Anthony John Salons.

Here she has found a niche to help stylists achieve superior collections – aiding them

with everything from casting the best models to offering the clothes, makeup and nails as well as finding the best photographers and re-touchers. “Some hairdressers find it a headache to source all the things they need so I can do it all for them as a nice little package,” she says.

“If you can get the right team together and everyone is comfortable then you’re one set ahead of everyone else to creating a winning collection.”

But her career doesn’t stop here either.

Ever ambitious, Collins is currently in the process of designing her own trend-led cosmetics range based on an idea that’s been in the pipeline for several years. “I’m hoping I can roll it out nationwide to other salons as well as selling it in the Pink Gloss boutique,” she says. “It will be a premiumstyle line targeted at consumers that will offer a range of trend-led colours each season.”

Meanwhile, the make-up artist also plans to hone in on her fashion design skills over the next year to launch her own clothing line. “I’d love to work on that side of things again and develop a collection that will be sold online and through independent boutiques,” she says. “I’ve always loved fashion so this would be a dream come true.”

But for now, Collins plans to focus on building her model agency to offer hairdressers a full package of contacts to help them produce award-winning shoots.

“The best bit about what I do is the fact that you can have an initial meeting and end up producing an amazing image that will always be there,” she concludes.

“Seeing an image you’ve worked on win an award is the best feeling in the world.”
