H

ello you lovely lot. It’s June! You know what that means… Hopefully COVID restrictions will be fully lifted, and what a time to be alive. So, in line with the above, the theme for this issue is pure joy. This comes in the shape of our summer hair and staff wellbeing features, of course along with all our regulars including Salon of the Month and Rising Star.

Our summer hair feature looks into how keeping up to date with seasonal trends can benefit your business, along with how to market your knowledge and offerings.

You may remember last month when we focused on client wellbeing as the hair and beauty industry reopened. We spoke about feelings of anxiety or stress they may be feeling as they return to some ‘normality’ and the same applies to your team.

This is why in our June issue we we’re looking into how staff can be looked after and measures which will encourage a pleasant work environment.

I am so excited to also reveal that we are introducing a brand-new feature this month. After the success of our one-off feature during lockdown; The Diary of a Quarantined Hairstylist, we are rolling with it as a regular feature and who more perfect to share their diary entries than the fantastic hair guru and Schwarzkopf queen that is Justin Mackland?! Each month he will be sharing an insight to challenges or experiences he’s faced within the salon that month, in hope to relate to others who may be facing something similar. Take our word for it, you do not want to miss it, he is just fantastic.

That’s got me all excited now! I hope you’re feeling the same way and are now eager to have a flick through our June issue.

Marlon Hawkins is new Artistic Director at Brooks & Brooks Brooks & Brooks artistic team member, Marlon Hawkins, has been promoted to artistic director.

It’s been an amazing few weeks for Marlon, who has worked with London-based Sally and Jamie Brooks for more than five years. After being involved in the launch of Brooks Education earlier this year, he also went on to win the Visionary Award at Creative Head’s Most Wanted this week.

And now, with his new role, he is planning on taking his work and that of the team to another level. Marlon said: “It’s been a crazy 12 months and to receive a promotion before reopening the salon has been the cherry on the cake. We are a tight team and I hope to use my new role to push the team into new directions, take them out of their comfort zone and create opportunities for them like Sally and Jamie have for me.”

Sally and Jamie added: “Marlon has been an inspiration during the past year – he has spent time developing his own style while teaching skills and passing on his knowledge to our team and our Brooks Education members. It’s been an unusual year but we’re looking forward to seeing how Marlon develops in the coming months!”

Fellowship puts the Spotlight on up-and-coming talent The Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Spotlight made its debut this week, with a host of new up-and-coming names presenting to a virtual audience.

Hosted by President Ken Picton and ClubStar artistic team leader, Karoliina Saunders, the evening saw eight hopefuls present a four-minute show to not just a virtual audience around the world, but a panel of esteemed ‘spies in the skies.’

The panel – which would later offer feedback on their presentation skills, creativity and ontrend looks - included Errol Douglas MBE, Nick Irwin, Karine Jackson, Jonathan Andrew, Robert Masciave and Bruno Giamattei.

Spotlight replaces the ever-popular Member’s Night and also saw special interviews with Manchester salon owner Melissa Timperley and Fellowship Hairdressers of the Year, Gary Hooker and Michael Young.

Ken said: “We know how important digital events are to the industry and tonight has been fantastic. Spotlight has to stay even when we open back up to some sort of normality.”

While Darrel Starkey presented vivid colour, Victoria Hughes talked through her 60s-vibe mood boards. Jet Hairdressing showcased their avant-garde work on life-size mannequins, while Vicky Leavey summed up the evening when she said: “We are creators, we are inspirers, we are innovators, we are artists.”

Nailing it After stumbling across her talent for nail art in lockdown, Charlotte Paradise, owner of @paradise. nailsandbeauty, reveals how she markets her business to be so successful along with her plans to offer masterclasses for fellow up and coming nail technicians.

When did you notice your passion for nails?

I have been a part of the beauty industry for over eight years, but only started my nail business last year. I have always loved having my nails done, it’s such a treat and makes me feel put together. When the initial lockdown struck last year, the thought of not having my nails done was just not an option. So, I took out my lamp along with the handful of gel colours that I had and started practicing and began creating nail art I didn’t know I was capable of.

How does your work stand out from nail techs/artists and what are your tips for helping aspiring nail techs to stand out?

I feel I have a very clear style of nail art that my followers and clients like to see.

I began creating nail art I didn’t know I was capable of.

I love to make mood boards of recent trends, adapt them and work them into my style. My advice to anyone looking to pursue their career as a nail tech would be to practice continuously and to not be afraid of trying new things. Ask your family and friends to practice on them as much as possible, this will help to build confidence and your skills. You mustn’t compare yourself to other nail technicians as nail art is a skill that can take years to perfect, so go at your own pace and trust the process.

How do you market yourself to be such a successful nail tech?

In the very early days of my nail journey, I learnt from a friend and fellow business owner to ‘find your niche’. This really inspired me and helped me grow as a nail artist, instead of trying to cover

all angles and become amazing at everything, I could really focus on what I am passionate about. After figuring this out I learned this is what I’m known for which makes marketing easier via social media.

How did you manage to build such a great client base?

Luckily, I have amazing friends and family that have supported me by becoming my clients. They allowed me to practice any designs I desired and share them to my Instagram page. They also helped promote my business by sharing my work on to their own pages. This helped me build up my following and gain an array of new clients. I also collaborated with five other amazing local businesses in my area and put together a competition for one amazing NHS Hero to win a

RISING STAR prize! By working with these other local businesses, we were able to share each other’s work with our followers which helped gain followers. Involving yourself in social competitions is definitely recommended.

You obviously take a lot of pride in your social media, how important is this to succeed in a competitive industry and what tips can you offer for anyone struggling with engagement on socials?

I love to use social media to showcase my designs and interact with other nail techs. Instagram is amazing for connecting with new people and to be inspired by other amazing nail artists. I actually took a really useful social media course last year held by Georgie from @thehivesalon, she gave me so many tips on how to grow my social media platform. I would say that consistency is key, ensure you’re regularly posting new designs on your feed and stories.

I also find tagging relevant brands to my posts really helps with engagement for example @thegelbottle @ thesalonmagazine @tgbacadamy.

Another beneficial tip is to always tag the account you were inspired by to create your design. This gives that artist the recognition they deserve but also nine times out of ten they will share your post to their story. This then showcases your work and your social media pages to all of their followers. I love this about the nail tech community, everyone wants

Consistency is key each other to succeed and are always supportive of each other’s work.

You do a lot of work which includes intricate detail, what are your tips for anyone trying to master this style of intricate work?

I have done lots of online nail art classes over the past year, there are some amazing nail techs that offer online master classes which I found super useful. I also practice on my own nails whenever I can, this allows me to perfect new ideas and helps with confidence when creating new nail art designs on clients.

What is going to be your next step to further your career?

I feel like my nail career is only just beginning, my next steps are to keep growing my following and client base.

I will keep attending classes and workshops to further my skills and to stay relevant with current trends. I would love to become a brand ambassador or to collaborate with industry faves such as The Gel Bottle and Nail Stamping Queen. I’m also hoping to offer master classes of my own over the next year as I found them so useful when I started my nail journey, I would love to help aspiring nail artists on their journey. @paradise.nailsandbeauty

Using a long fine liner brush, paint on lines of your chosen Halo Gel Polish colour. The lines can be of any width.

Ensure there is enough product applied.

Repeat Step 1 until you have filled the full nail, making sure not to touch the skin with your product.

Using a clean fine liner brush and starting from cuticle to tip, drag down pulling the colour through - wiping the brush clean each time.

Step four

Repeat this process on the middle and sides of nail.

This time start from tip to cuticle dragging your brush in between the lines you have already created. Now fully cure the nail.

ince the 1990s TONI&GUY international artistic director and head of education, Cos Sakkas, has been creating award-winning images. From his Newcomer of the Year collection in 1999 to his British Hairdresser of the Year nominee collection in 2020, Cos has been creating beautiful, creative and commercial images.

“Working on photo shoot is one of the favourite things to do – it gives you an opportunity to be creative, work with some incredible people and push yourself out of your comfort zone,” Cos added.

So, what has he learnt over the past 20 years? Here’s his tips for creating headline-grabbing images:

Don’t be a follower of fashion.

1 Make sure your models are individual and beautiful in their own rights. Don’t be a follower of fashion but work with their own personal beauty.

2 Make a physical mood board rather than collecting images on your phone.

It will help with your creativity and be a reference point for everyone on the day.

3 Make sure hair, make-up and clothes all work together. Remember it is a hair shoot and you don’t want to detract from the hairstyle you have created, so keep everything else simple and

s the warmer weather tip toes in and diaries fill up all over the country with a mountain of plans after the muchanticipated resumption of social lives, it’s only natural that your clients are going to want to look their best as they head on out to make the most of normality.

Post-pandemic or not, summer always sees an array of new hair trends falling at our feet. As a business owner or stylist, we’re sure you’re already aware of how paramount it is to keep on top of the ever-changing styles and developments within this fast-paced industry. Being ahead of the game is ultimately what will make you stand out from the rest.

With that being said, it’s all well and good knowing what colour is going to be hot this season but it’s more about how you share that information. Shout about it! This is what will entice your clients in.

With the help of some of the industry’s most sought-after stylists, we are getting the answers to questions such as why staying on top of trends is essential to a salon business, where should you be getting your inspiration from to ensure you’re keeping on top of new styles and exactly how a business should market their summer hair offerings and knowledge to get the most out of it.

When it comes to running a salon, Celebrity hairdresser and salon owner Jay Birmingham, believed that one of the most important things is to ensure that you are delivering what your clients and target clients want. This comes down to services and being able to offer current trends for example balayage colour services as clients move away from only wanting full head of highlights.

“Showing that you are aware of current trends is also important from your client’s perspective. They are trusting you as their hairdresser (the professional) to give them the hair they desire and being on trend is important to them.

“As trends emerge and grow in popularity the demand becomes more which in turn means you can charge a premium for offering certain services.”

Jay explained that it can be challenging to keep on top of the latest trends but believes that knowing where to take your inspiration from instantly puts you in a better position.

You can note trends emerging from catwalks in terms of styling and cuts and I find this really useful.” Added Jay. Of course, it’s all well and good knowing what’s on trend for s particular season but you want people to know that you’re clued up on this, it put you at a major advantage.

When it comes to marketing and communication, there is no one size fits all approach for salons. One way to market your summer hair offerings is to create bespoke packages to show your services. Jay advises creating a package with tape extensions combined with bespoke balayage and foils as this would work well for his clients in the salon: “I can then communicate this with them via my social media and website using images and visuals to inspire clients to book in. You can also add in other services including treatments and cuts for maximum profit.”

Brian ‘Leo’ McCallum, owner of Roar Hair and Beauty, also knows that keeping up with the latest trends is key if you’re going to run a successful salon business.

If you’re charging your worth your clients will be paying a premium price and therefore rightly expecting a premium service.

“You can’t carry out the best service possible if you’re not aware of current trends that your clients may request in the salon.

This also ties in with education, particularly when it comes to colour services. Your team should not only be aware of current trends but also fully aware of how to carry them out and deliver the services your clients are likely

Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional Global Brand Ambassador, also notices that staying on top of trends is of great importance, but not necessarily for a business. He commented: “Keeping up with the ever-changing trends is important for the individual stylists and the rapport they have with their clientele.

This works mainly in two ways; it shows the client you are knowledgeable and passionate about what you do but also allows you to have a better understanding of ways to offer your clientele new and interesting looks.

Having the ability to do this will help keep your clientele engaged and committed to you as stylist.”

So, exactly how should a business market their summer hair offerings to get the most out of it? The approach Jonathan uses is by adding relevant imagery to an e-campaign email to send out with specific services you are pushing for that season, allowing clients a direct understanding of what you’re offering. “Social media has been incredible for showcasing professional hair work, showing the world what we are capable of, but in some cases, it has also given clients unachievable expectations.

“Heavily edited photos, or images showing only the end result and not the process can cloud clients understanding and think everything is achievable, in one sitting. Having detailed and honest consultations with clients is paramount to ensuring the client understands the full process, commitment, and cost.”

Whilst staying in the loops with trends is essential, Jonathan and Nikita want to remind you that also the new techniques and innovations in professional services which often come along with that are hugely important too: “This will ensure you can provide the best and most efficient services to your clients with the most current methods and technology.”

Social media is a fantastic place to market your services to new and existing clientele – after all, it is the first place we all go to check out businesses, whether it be a new restaurant, shop or hair salon.

“Ensuring you have a diverse range of services and styles showcased on your social media channels will make you more desirable to a wider audience and is great way to market yourself to new clients.

“It is also important to show full processes on socials; reels are a fantastic way to do this, especially if you’re doing a dramatic transformation as you can show before looks, during processes and the finished result, all with captions and edits explaining time, process and money – all of which is great information for clients whilst being delivered in a modern and fun way.” Explained Jonathan and Nikita.

What is the process of setting up a profile to then gaining clients?

The salon then has all stylists linked to the salon or the stylists can be independent, Clients can also create a profile, this will enable them to save their favourite style, salon or stylist. Once a profile is created you can use it to share with whoever you would like to advertise yourself to, it’s a great tool as a CV.

How will the platform enable users to be seen?

What would a typical profile include?

Profile picture is essential, you will not be listed until this part is done. You will need a bio to tell us exactly what you want us and potential clients to know about you including your qualifications/ experience. Your pricelist, opening times and a gallery of hair pictures can also be included. You are able to tag as many categories as possible to one style in order for you to be seen more, for example – a specific colour or length.

The profile picture is the only feature which is obligatory, the rest are optional.

Admittedly, something which may have been daunting after being in lockdown for so long. Whilst we noticed that client health and happiness is of optimum importance, a huge contributing factor to this happiness is that of your staff and their wellbeing.

We are keen to find out what techniques some of the industry’s experts use to ensure that staff wellbeing remains a priority, their opinions on the effects of wellness amongst a team, as well as how this can work in line to encourage greater client retention rates and a wellrespected reputation for your business.

No one wants to see unhappy staff or sit in an awkward atmosphere. A happy, engaged and committed team working in a relaxed and pleasant environment will always be appealing and welcoming to clients: “Your salon should be a warm

and friendly retreat from the world – ensuring clients don’t want to leave instead of being keen to get away!” Said Tina.

Making sure your employees feel valued and engaged is essential. Tina advises holding daily team meetings to encourage their contributions and ideas so they feel genuinely involved in decision-making.

“Show that you value their input and also take the opportunity to highlight and praise team members who have gone that extra mile. Encourage your staff to share any concerns or problems they may be experiencing, and always offer one-to-one meetings in case someone needs to speak privately.

“In addition to this, holding monthly one-to-one reviews and setting clear goals and targets at annual reviews will benefit both you and your staff members.”

In terms of dealing with stressed work colleagues, it can be tricky knowing where to start. Still, Tina sees that your first step should be arranging confidential meetings to allow your employee to discuss any concerns or worries they have.

“If you do experience criticism, don’t react negatively. Listen as carefully and objectively as you can.” Said Tina.

David Nicolson, Director of Rainbow Room International’s Royal Exchange Square Salon, knows how vital staff wellbeing is and believes if your team’s wellbeing needs are being met, they will be a lot happier, more productive, more focussed and less likely to take time off work.

It’s been a challenging year and David, I’m sure like most of you, wants to make sure he is supporting his team wherever possible.

“We do this through regular meetings and by checking in with each team member individually.”

All of the Rainbow Room International team (across all salons) have also been signed up for the mental health charity, Mind: “As a company, we pay for all of our employees to have access to this if they wish to get further support.

We also have our Rainbow Room International Working Practices booklet and a Wellness Action Plan (WAP) from Mind, which is intended to encourage discussion between our team and us as managers/directors around mental health and wellbeing at work. It helps us as directors to understand ways in which we may be able to help keep our team mentally well at work and discuss what support we could provide if anyone does start to feel unwell. It’s so important that our team know that we are always here if they want to chat.

“Repeat business is what we are all about. The authenticity and focus on the client’s needs are equally important as repeat ‘good vibes ‘with all the team.

Added David.

Incentives are often used to encourage performance levels amongst staff members, and they can come in many forms, but David believes that cash is not usually the best way forward: “Valuing and praising the things that will benefit the individual and salon will always reap the rewards for all involved.”

As the staff wellbeing is paramount to your salon’s success, it is imperative to schedule in time to assess how staff are feeling. This is, of course, tough at the moment given all the impact current guidance has on time and appointments in the salon anyway, but this needn’t be a time-consuming exercise: “Even something as simple as a quick one

on one tea before doors open in the morning could provide salon owners with a good indicator of how staff are feeling.

More formal time can then be set up for those who are assessed as needing it.”

Added Lesley.

Corey Taylor, the co-founder of NOCO Hair in Bristol, also explained how staff wellbeing is a fundamental part of the success of any business, especially in a customer-facing role. A happy team can be more productive and deliver a much higher level of service. The positive

Every meeting begins with a WIFLE (what I feel like expressing) to be aware of the struggles anyone may be facing and share one another’s wins.

We have recently learned that one of our beloved guests is a Self-Doubt Coach and would love to invite her to carry out some coaching with our team as this seems to be a big issue within our industry, especially after so many months of not doing what we love.” Corey added.

In terms of coping with team members who may be struggling to deal with stress and anxiety at work, Corey explained the importance of making sure they feel heard and advises creating an open space where your team members

feel comfortable to come and talk to you. Then listen, be an ear. Sometimes people just need to let it all out! “Advise where appropriate and remember the goal is to come up with a solution to the problem.” Said Corey.

‘Teamwork makes the dream work’ as they say, and a team of kind, like-minded individuals, will do what they can to support one another. Corey spoke about how a stressed work colleague may be worried about a colour correction and how another colourist can step in and offer their expertise and guidance.

When you are all working towards a common goal, rowing in the same direction and playing for the same team, you will all do what you can to help each other. When you have the support of those around you, you can feel the stress dissolve. As they say, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved.’

1. Spot the signs of stress

“Be on the lookout for signs of stress in your employees,” says Tina. “These can include performing less well at work, taking more sick leave, becoming withdrawn, being self-critical and weight changes. “This pushes forward into our inspiration for the salon interior, as we wanted to create a warm and home-like space that was minimalistic and clean, inviting and comforting. Adding pops of colour and fun into the space while not deflecting from the relaxing atmosphere we like to create for our clients to enjoy.”

Inspired by a love for California, their chic and earthy interiors, neutral colour palettes, accent colours and plenty of plants to bring the outdoors in, along with the aim for a more sustainable approach also inspired the salon design decisions.

“We wanted to create an earthy and minimalistic vibe that was comforting and relaxing. Using natural materials and neutral colours, we wanted to stay away from a clinical feel paired with the use of dark salon furniture and high gloss surfaces that is commonly used in salon décor.

“We strived for an inviting and individual space that spoke our brand ethos and vision clearly. Biscuit colour styling chairs, natural wood elements and polished concrete flooring have really helped us achieve this and pops of dark green and blush pink in patterned designs keep our brand aesthetics aligned throughout the space without over taking the overall atmosphere.

“The variation of our 42 plants really do bring a zen feeling of nature and the outdoors in, and the candy strip façade and step as they really showcase the salons personality and add a fun element to the design.”

The salon originally opened in June 2012 and for seven years occupied the unit next door to their current home. Joshua explained that the original aesthetic was vintage chic as, he was 22 when Joshuaa Shaun first opened and had different ideas

for the ideal salon: “It only felt right to rebrand to represent the more matured and rounded salon we had grown into when we decided to relocate and relaunch in May 2019.

“Steering away from high gloss, chandeliers and dark furniture was very important in the design decisions while still creating a high end and luxurious feel – natural and raw materials were key to our goal of working towards a more sustainable working environment, which we are currently taking steps towards.”

The salon is a small boutique and Joshua explained: “We aren’t driven by bigger and better but instead quality and experience. Our interior offers a friendly and familiar space free from any pretence or judgement. We use high end sustainable products with a creative team that are passionate in making sure our client’s personality and expression is listened to and respected through great hair.”

Providing an experience of great quality isn’t the only the thing which helps the salon to stand out but creating a homely and familiar, yet comforting space was really important to Joshua as he wanted the environment to reflect the aim of ‘a safe space’ for people to visit.

“The number of people within the LBTQ+ community alone that feel uncomfortable in visiting a hair salon with fears of being mis-gendered, turned away and embarrassed was uncomfortable for us. I really felt I needed do my part by creating a space that people can express themselves comfortably while accessing services they should be able to inclusively enjoy.” Joshua added.

Joshua believes that interiors have a real power in how people experience and respond to a space. My achievements, my mistakes, the happy, the sad and the challenging – only in the Salon Magazine. But who am I? My name’s Justin Mackland, a colourist, a level 3 Apprentice Stylist and a Schwarzkopf Social Queen from Ishoka in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Dear diary,

I’m going to cut to the chase. 2021 arrived and not a single salon in the UK opened until the month of April. This of course meant that April was supposed to be an exciting month, a promising month, a month full of joy – so why was I riddled with anxiety every single day?

I had gained at least 20 new, beautiful clients from working so hard on my socials during lockdown. Every single one of these clients attended their appointments and left delighted but I was left on the edge of my seat awaiting a complaint. All of a sudden, I felt I had lost my identity. I felt a fraud and that I wasn’t worthy of everything I had achieved.

Me being me, I took to socials and several “hairstylist group chats” that I’m involved in to express how I was feeling. I was then made aware that what

I was feeling was in fact called imposter syndrome. Four months of living in my own bubble, taking on the industry from the comfort of my own home, attending online hair courses and recording podcasts for industry shows had finally taken its toll on my mental health as I was released back into the fast-paced environment of the salon. Now, five weeks into a routine, I wouldn’t say I’m cured but I’ve definitely learned how to cope a little better with it.

I’ve broken the silence. I try to separate facts from feelings. I reflect on all of my achievements so far, no matter how big or small they are, and I’ve developed a healthy response to my mistakes that I may have made. We feel this is very important for a Training Academy to do, as we believe the real education starts after you finish your course. We may have given you the knowledge, but it is now up to you to put the hours in and keep practising, improving, and gaining experience. I would hate to think that our students left

You better shape up!

Our guest columnist Emily Cording is back with a bang as we talk shape! Nail shape is key to any design, which is why Emily reveals which factors you should tailor the shape around for a client.

ello Salon Magazine readers, it’s your resident columnist here, Emily Cording. Back and busy as ever working our mani magic with those Spring/ Summer pastel hues, swirl nail art designs and the ever-popular skinny Frenchies. But should we consider a specific nail shape per client? Depending on the shade, style or theme of your mani, should you opt for a set shape? Or are all nail shapes universal?

This month I’m going to give a little run down on the types of nail shapes out there, which shapes I believe suit certain styles, and the hottest shapes this season. As a professional, it is not only down to you to determine what shades/designs suit your clients best; it is also down to us to determine the most suitable nail shape. This can be an easy option, dependent on the natural shape our clients attend their appointment with. However, some nail art designs may require a specific shape to give the desired effect that the mani statement is set to create. You want to make the mani as aesthetically pleasing as possible

whilst remaining practical.

A skinny French, for example, requires a delicate touch, so a softer, smoother shape such as almond or a rounded edge fits the criteria perfectly. A plain, subtle nude can be easily adapted to be bold, striking and stand out from the crowd when paired with a squared free edge. It really is down to you as the artist to determine which shape best suits the mani memo.

The past few years have primarily been dominated by the ‘coffin’ shape, with celebs such as Kylie Jenner rocking this bold look. This year shows a stark contrast with a rise of a more demure style. 2021 welcomes a short ‘squoval’ set or a softer rounded edge mani. Lockdown really boosted these shapes, proving very popular during the pandemic. Aside from looking great on a bare nail plate, these nail shapes are also far more hygienic as bacteria can get trapped under those more extended sets. If you’re still unsure on which shapes to practice this season, here’s my ultimate guide to the two nail shapes you need to know for 2021, along with the

Squoval

This is a happy medium between square and oval. This style is my number one go-to shape for most of my May clients.

The squoval looks great on most hands and designs. You can achieve that sharper squared look without the risk of breakage by rounding off the edges.

This style makes the adjusted squared set more practical and easier to maintain, resulting in a longer-lasting mani.

Round

The trusty ‘Mrs Practical’. This is your go-to shape for the low-key client.

Understated, tidy and looks lovely when standing alone or as a platform for any colour. If your client is prone to breakage, this is the ideal shape for them. As we’ve seen a rise in the alternative French mani this year (which I envisage will continue to be ever-prominent in the nail world for some time to come), the rounded edge suits this style and fits the bill.
