W

hile we may not have experienced the perfect summer weather, the new season got off to a bang last month with a host of industry celebrations. Always a highlight of the year, the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2013 Grand Final provided around one thousand industry insiders (as well as INOA ambassador Alexa Chung and some other famous faces) with a jaw-dropping display of some of the best hairdressing creations on the planet. From an awe-inspiring futuristic catwalk by the Trevor Sorbie art team that was seven months in the planning to presentations from this year’s finalists and winners, turn to page seven to discover why the evening was one to remember. Meanwhile the nail industry’s brightest stars were also recognised at an awards ceremony hosted by Scratch magazine. Now in its second year, the Scratch Stars awards was created as a platform dedicated to celebrating nail professionals. Nail techs and product houses were able to enter a range of awards with 18 gongs up for grabs in categories ranging from Session Stylist of the Year to Best Marketing and Support. Meanwhile, the beauty industry held some celebrations of its own in the capital at the BABTAC and CIBTAC awards. So from Beauty Therapist of the Year to Beauty Industry Entrepreneur, find out who won what on our news pages, starting from page seven. But it wasn’t all parties and patting each other on the back last month: when we weren’t socialising, we were putting together

this month’s issue and we hope you’ll agree that it’s jam-packed with business ideas and advice. Anti-ageing and skin rejuvenation are key growth areas in the beauty sector. Brooks and Brooks’ Sophia Hilton dazzles at L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2013

T

he art team coordinator for London’s Brooks and Brooks stole the show at last month’s L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2013 Grand Final by scooping first place in the national competition. Sophia Hilton, who entered as part of the London salon’s team, became the fifty-eighth L’Oreal Colour Trophy winner, with Toni and Guy Regent Street and Scotland’s Gallagher Horner Hair securing second and third place respectively. Blackpool-born Hilton, who has been hairdressing for eight years and part of the Brooks and Brooks team since 2009, created a modernised blonde and copper version of the popular dip-dye technique. “The idea actually came from my frustration with dip-dye colour,” she says.

“Once girls wanted to have it done to look individual, but now they just look like everyone else. I developed a technique I call the ‘mid-dye’, which is basically lighter hair running through the middle. It is more technical to carry out than a standard dipdye but it’s fresh and new and my clients are loving it” The Colour Trophy winners were announced in front of 1,000 industry insiders and celebrities at a black-tie event inside Mayfair’s Grosvenor House. Hosted by George Lamb, around 65 salon teams battled it out creating their interpretation of ‘hair inspired by fashion’ to win the highly coveted Colour Trophy. Saks Doncaster was crowned the winner of the L’Oréal Professionnel Men’s Image Award, which was presented to the

team by Jo Hansford MBE. Meanwhile, the Mizani Afro Look Award was presented to Toni and Guy in Chiswick by brand ambassador Shingai Shoniwa of the Noisettes. Another highlight of the evening was the announcement of the seven regional winners of the L’Oréal Professionnel Young Colourist Award, which were named on by INOA ambassador Alexa Chung. Salon social Former Weston College student Emma Rogers has scooped the title of National Apprentice of the Year. The award was presented to the young beauty therapist, who recently opened her own salon in Wedmore, at a recent event hosted by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education.

Derbyshire salon group owner Sally Montague celebrated 30 years in business recently with a VIP party inside her latest enterprise. Located on Sadler Gate in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter, more than 100 guests – including local MPs and press – joined the salon’s staff to toast the group’s success. Barrie Stephen re-opened his Leicester city centre salon last month after the premises underwent a refurbishment. Now featuring a new minimalist design and concept colour lounge, the launch of the newly revamped flagship salon received support from numerous guests including the city’s mayor, council leaders, clients, charities and the Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce. Sean Hanna’s creative director Skyler McDonald channelled the style of David Bowie on stage recently at a live hair show in the South of France. The hour-long presentation featured live transformations inspired by the British legend’s many reinventions – with looks including bright orange crops and diamante-adorned undercuts. Luke Benson and Clayde Maumann from D&J Ambrose in Pinner were among the finalists reaching the penultimate level of the Wella Professionals Trend Vision Award 2013. They will join the rest of the country’s regional winners in the final set to take place in Ireland this October to battle it out for the top spots.

Saving face As demand for anti-ageing skincare reaches new levels, Gemma Ward hunts out some of the best salon-friendly skin rejuvenators on the market

A

nti-ageing skincare is booming. According to industry analysts, the global market will continue to grow at unprecedented rates in 2013. Facial skincare remains as one of the strongest beauty categories of them all, with the big AVEDA five European countries (that’s the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain) said to be worth in excess of €6.5 billion. Products and treatments that promise skin rejuvenation have also become one of the professional industry’s biggest money-spinners. And with restoring the skin to a more youthful condition becoming the ultimate feat in anti-ageing, experts predict that this is a sound investment for salons wanting to cater for today’s results-hungry consumers. “Skin rejuvenation is always a hot beauty topic,” says Angela BarbagelataFabes, chairman of Carlton Beauty and Spa. “Physically, we are in a better state than ever before. Forty is the new 30 and we are also living longer, which creates a big market for rejuvenation treatments.”

Salon services Traditionally, skin rejuvenation has been associated with the aesthetics industry’s intensive procedures such as chemical peels, fillers, Botox and laser re-surfacing. However, with continuing advancements in ingredients and hi-tech beauty devices, the salon industry is becoming well placed to offer clients results-driven services that match up to those offered by clinics. “Skin

rejuvenation results can also be achieved with products that are formulated with cutting edge ingredient technology,” says Victoria Evans, corporate trainer for Dermalogica UK. “These include microencapsulated vitamins A, C and E,

of advanced cosmeceutical ingredients including highly active skin-smoothing lactic acid and salicylic acid along with a complex of proteolytic enzymes and peptides. “A unique benefit is the lack of inflammation, tissue damage and peeling generally associated with intense resurfacing treatments,” says Evans. “Meanwhile, in line with Dermalogica’s prescriptive approach, each treatment series can be customised to individual skin needs and level of tolerance.”

The new 45-minute skin rejuvenating service uses a cocktail

Indeed today there is a wide range of hi-tech skin rejuvenation therapies available at the fingertips of the beauty salon professional. Key treatments include microcurrent for facial lifting, radio frequency to stimulate new collagen production and minimise wrinkles, vacuum to boost the lymph and circulation, galvanic to improve circulation and provide deep cleansing, faradic to tighten and tone the facial muscles, and colour therapy to improve oxygenation and detoxification of the skin. But with so many technologies on offer, rooting out which is best for your salon is no easy task. As according to the experts, every client is different. “The best treatment is the one or combination that will offer the best results for that particular client,” says Barbagelata-Fabes. This sentiment is echoed by John Thomas, combined aesthetic platforms sales manager for PureGenex, who believes the best option for salons is to invest in equipment that offers numerous options in one complete machine. His

ANTI-AGEING SKINCARE company’s PureIce platform (Puregenex. co.uk) offers a range of therapies that promise to deliver “outstanding skin rejuvenation results for the whole body – including the face and sensitive areas around the eyes.” He explains: “This is achieved through the combination of key non-invasive technologies that act on all the aspects of skin rejuvenation. This includes PDT, dermal massage and the latest advancements in vacuum targeted multipolar radio frequency, including electronic impedance matching, to ensure optimal delivery of the treatment energy through the layers of the dermis.” Suitable for all skin types, ages and genders – but most effective on clients aged between 35 and 65 – it promises to generate significant and visible improvement in the texture and tonal consistency of the skin while also strengthening the underlying protein structures that give the complexion a more supple, smooth and youthful appearance. Barbagelata-Fabes agrees that such therapies can yield an impressive skin rejuvenation effect. Moreover, she believes that radio frequency in particular is becoming a highly popular service for clients that want anti-ageing results without undergoing an intensive procedure. “Radio frequency is one of the least invasive, yet most effective, skin rejuvenation treatments available,” she says. “It is so non-invasive that it doesn’t generate many contra-actions, so it can be combined with lots of other therapies.” The expert recommends that therapists perform a lifting facial massage after each radio therapy treatment to maximise the effects. Meanwhile, she says therapists can also combine it with a light application of diamond peeling or with microcurrent for “the ultimate in lifting and anti-ageing skincare”. Heightened results Tracy Tamaris, training director for the International Institute for Anti-Ageing (iiaa), meanwhile, says that such treatments can be made even more powerful with the introduction of active ingredients – such as vitamin A. “Despite it not being a new “wow” ingredient, nothing works as effectively on skin as vitamin A,” she

says. “It has been known since 1910 that vitamin A normalises skin cells and there is no other ingredient that has this effect, at any age. It can also improve fine lines associated with ageing.” Products from South African brand Environ – which is supplied to UK salons by the iiaa – contain high levels of the wonder ingredients that can be prescribed to individual clients. The expert says that treatments using enhanced penetration techniques – such as low frequency sound waves and pulsed galvanic – with vitamin A will yield the best results. “They ensure that enough active ingredients penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin where they will work to normalise cells, stimulate collagen production and correct pigmentation problems,” she explains. However, the expert says that clients should be encouraged to introduce the wonder ingredient into their homecare routines as well for the most optimum results. “Supplementation is as important as topical products and in fact should be the first step to rejuvenate skin,” she says. “Vitamin A taken orally is extremely powerful way to contribute to the maintenance of normal, healthy skin because the normal way our body draws the nutrients it needs is through what we eat.” (Tel: 0208 450 2020 Iiaa.eu). But vitamin A isn’t the only anti-ageing ingredient being touted by the expert: new evidence from independent researchers at the University of Reading has found that Matrixyl is an effective collagen-stimulating ingredient. And this news has led to multiple stories in the consumer press as well as heightened awareness among beauty fans. While Tamaris maintains that Matrixyl is not a substitute for vitamin A, she says that the peptide can be highly effective when both ingredients are used together. Sharon Hilditch, MD for Crystal Clear, also recommends products containing Matrixyl for effective skin rejuvenation results. “When I developed the Crystal Clear range some five years ago that is what I selected as one of the most important ingredients,” she says. “It seems strange that now there is so much press about what Matrixyl does and clinical data of how it reverses the ageing process.” The expert says that brand’s Intense Anti-Ageing Serum, Illuminate, Wipe Away the Years, Velvet Skin and Deep Cleanse Gel are all packed with the peptide at

Back to nature But for those clients that prefer a more holistic approach, natural products that use fruit acids and enzymes, manual dermabrasion ingredients, hyaluronic acids found in plants and healing and stimulating herbs, fruits and spices can also greatly improve the appearance of the skin. And according to Tracy Smith, founder of The Skinsmith, which distributes Éminence Organic Skincare in the UK, such products can be just as effective as their more intensive counterparts: “As far as Éminence is concerned, we will continue to develop higher performance organic and natural ingredients to rival chemical procedures,” she says. “We’ve certainly noticed a rise in people becoming increasingly aware of the ingredients within the products they are using on their skin, seeing them opt for natural alternatives.” The latest launches from Éminence combine advanced natural retinol and hydroquinone alternatives with innovative plant stem cell technology to heighten the rejuvenating and anti-ageing properties of the products. Use younger clients to inspire creativity

While parents might initially pay for their offspring’s salon visits, businesses must remain appealing to young people if they are to maintain their custom in their teens and beyond. “It’s important that salons offer a family service so if you win one member of the family (usually the mother) then the rest of them will become loyal clients,” says Marshall. “But you have to make sure your brand has appeal to teenagers. This is the age when they start going their own way and if your salon doesn’t echo that ‘young vibe’ they will move on.”

While staple services underpin the success of every salon, younger clients can help give team members a creativity boost. “Typically our young clients are much bolder when it comes to experimenting with their hair,” says Thomson. “So it gives us a chance to be really creative.” Marshall adds: “Youngsters may not be able to afford the senior stylists but they may actually prefer the younger members of the team. They have more in common. And doing kids just a bit younger than them that who may like more creative hairstyling keeps the younger stylists engaged and motivated.”

Get them in as models

Young people make great models– particularly for creative hairdressing or nail services – as they are more inclined to experiment. What’s more, introducing them to junior team members can be great for the salon as there is a potential that they will develop into long-term clients with your youngest generation of staff. “We target younger clients for our model nights so even when they’ve broke, they can still afford to come to Byron,” says Marshall.

Bear young clients’ needs in mind

Introduce a teen – friendly product line But whatever services are on offer, salons should also introduce retail products that appeal to younger clients if they want to target this market. Sixteen-year-old Jazz Smedley, daughter of Georgie and Jason Smedley who head up Nail Harmony in the UK, is set to launch a line of nail products targeted at young people later this year. Be nice

Young people are sometimes considered as troublemakers and as such, can be treated badly by some customerfacing professionals. Smedley says that business owners that want to attract younger clients must bear this in mind when they welcome them into the salon: “Teenagers often get really intimidated by going into shops and salons – I know this from experience,” she says. “So you need to make sure that they understand the products you’re using and why they’re going to get fantastic results in the end. Also, just make sure you’re friendly – being nice will go a long way.”

Speak their language

With a high percentage of young people regularly using social media sites to communicate, shop and find inspiration, building a presence is essential for any business that wants to appeal to this target market. “Facebook seems to really work for us,” says Thompson. “Our salon is based in a small town and yet we have nearly 2,500 followers. This is because we try and make sure we have a good mix of news from the salon, promotions, hair advice and celebrity news.” Nicholson adds: “We use Facebook to share what we do. This helps clients who have liked us become a part of what we are. This gives them something back and keeps them informed.”

Keep up with new technology Even if you’ve got to grips with Facebook, never rest on your social media laurels. Young people are often at the forefront of changing technology – and if you want to appeal to a more youthful crowd, it’s essential that you keep up too. “We’ve used Facebook but word now is that young people are moving away from this and onto other sites such as Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter,” says Marshall. “Snapchat is big with the kids at the moment but we are not sure yet if it can benefit the salon. Social networking is

The magic of mail Salon marketing expert Alice Kirby reveals why snail mail is experiencing a revival as the best way to reach clients

G

oogle has just sent me a £75 coupon for its AdWord service – through the post. You’d think this online giant would use email, text or even an app to reach its clients. But no: its marketing executives make a deliberate decision to use direct mail. And it works. The good news is that the same idea can work for your salon too. Gone are the days of mass junk mail. Today’s savvy salon owners are using the post to build relationships, not sales. And clients like to receive mail. It makes them feel special and it shows that you care.

Stamps are your best friend So why does Google use snail mail? And why should you? The reason is, quite simply, because traditional post gets read. Eighty-two per cent of consumers open their direct mail according to recent research conducted by the Royal Mail. We receive such little post these days that when a handwritten envelope lands on the doormat, it just cries out to be opened.

Get the most from your post Avoid expensive volume mailings. Small is beautiful. The secret is to keep it targeted, personal and relevant.

Here are three direct mail ideas that can help you nurture your clients and build valuable long-term relationships: Missing you: the post is an ideal way to coax those lapsed clients back to your salon. Less intrusive than a text, more distinctive than an email, and you know it will reach the client. A simple card with a time-limited offer and a ‘book now’ message should do the trick. Do be generous with your discount: you’ve invested money in postage and print so don’t squander it by being tight-fisted with your offer. If clients haven’t been back for six months, it will take a juicy incentive to motivate them to pick up the phone and book again. Many happy returns: birthday cards are direct mail marketing at its most simple and effective. What better way to tell a client that “you’re important to us”? Add a personal touch with bespoke greeting cards designed and printed for your salon – you’ll find it’s cheaper than bulk-buying them from a shop. Include a birthday girl/ boy gift, such as a pampering treatment, on their next visit. I tend to avoid discounts here and look at ways to up-sell salon services instead. I also like to handwrite the envelope rather than just stick a label on. Yes, it does take that bit longer, but looks so much more special and inviting.

Plus 49 per cent of consumers say they are more likely to open mail if they are intrigued by the package. New clients: you’ve worked hard to attract a new client, wowed them with your salon experience and sent them out of the door feeling fantastic. Now make sure you carry on building that relationship and turn them into that marketing pot of gold – a loyal client. Direct mail is the perfect next step. If they haven’t rebooked after around six to eight weeks, pop a card in the post with an appealing offer for their second visit. Use their name, always hand write the envelope, and add a personal note for maximum effect.

Measure and measure again One final tip – remember to monitor the results. This is crucial to calculating the success of your direct marketing and the return on your investment in postage, print and time. An easy method is to include a promotional code in your offer which clients must mention to enjoy the special prices. If you don’t know what your employees are up to on Facebook and Twitter, it’s time to take action, says HR expert Liz Strama

“I

t may not seem like an important issue because who has time to worry about what their employees are doing on Facebook and Twitter, right? But did you realise that employers are liable if their employees write something derogatory on social media sites about someone linked to the business – whether that’s another employee, a customer or supplier? And this still applies even if the employee writes the remarks outside of business hours and off business premises. “So as an employer, how can you protect yourself? The easiest way is to create a company Social Media Policy and circulate it to all employees. This should cover all aspects of how you expect your employees to behave online. “Even if the employee is not making reference to your business, they still need to behave in a certain manner on public sites – for example, it would be unacceptable for your employee to make racist or violent comments and threats. “As an employer, you have responsibilities and you have to protect your reputation. Like it or not, your employees are an extension of your company image, brand and reputation. Comments they make can be linked back to your business and, in extreme cases, may significantly damage the business. “Let’s consider this example: a customer comes into the salon and

complains about everything from start to finish: the waiting area has run out of magazines, the coffee served isn’t hot enough, the music being played is too loud, and so on… An employee who knows the customer (Mrs Smith) tells their colleague about her personal history. Later that day, the employee who’d being dealing with Mrs Smith writes on Facebook: ‘I’ve had the day from hell, and it didn’t help that Mrs Smith came

in and the stupid cow complained about everything. No wonder her husband ran off with the next door neighbour lol!’ It just so happened that a friend of this employee was also a friend of Mrs Smith and forwarded the comment to her. As you can imagine, Mrs Smith was extremely upset and angry about the post. The next morning, Mrs Smith went back

into the salon and told the owner all about the Facebook post, demanding they take action against the employee. As the owner did not have a Social Media Policy, the employee argued that they could write whatever they wanted to because they hadn’t been told otherwise. In order to resolve the situation, the owner ended up paying compensation to Mrs Smith for the hurt and embarrassment caused. “This simple example shows what can happen when a seemingly private comment is made on a social media site. For the employer, it can quickly spiral out of control and ruin their reputation. But if a proper policy had been in place, the whole episode could have been avoided since the employee would have known it was against the rules of their employment to post such a comment. Even if they had still posted the comment, the employer would have been within their rights to take them through a disciplinary procedure and potentially resolve the issue without having to pay compensation to the customer. “For hairdressers, excellent customer service is key is sustaining a client base. Social skills Steve Rowbottom reveals why social media is big business when it comes to boosting a salon brand

To achieve this we have invested heavily in our social media strategy to increase brand awareness and further develop relationships with our customers. “As a result we have enlisted a dedicated in-house department to professionally manage all areas of social media for the brand since January ‘12. This ensures we can actively work towards gearing our social media campaigns to specific client groups. A strong social media strategy builds trust between you and your clients and potential ones, and enables you to deal directly with any questions they may have, which greater increases the chance of them not only becoming customers, but also recommending you. “In any business communication is a key aspect of its success. In these challenging times, having an online digital strategy that also communicates your brand message is vital. A digital media strategy needs a destination, so ensure you keep on the right route. And remember: it’s not only about the destination, but the journey you take to get there, so endeavour to make yours as picturesque as possible. From apprentice to educator Tegan Chapman reveals how effective work-based training saw her rise through the ranks at Saks

began my career as a hairdressing apprentice with Saks Apprenticeships and during this time I worked at the Saks Darlington and Newcastle salons completing my NVQ Levels Two and Three and the L’Oreal Colour Specialist Degree. After completing my apprenticeship and working at Saks Bishop Auckland for a number of years, I made the move into the education sector working at the Saks Darlington Academy as a senior hairdressing educator. I spent seven years there, and was really lucky to work with some incredibly talented students along
