hile January might be a bit of an anti climax for many people, I find it’s the perfect time to reassess my work and goals. With all the doom and gloom in the media surrounding the economy and high street, it’s easy to get caught up in the January blues. But don’t. Hob Salons celebrates triple hat trick at the British Hairdressing Awards as it enters the hall of fame three times

L

ondon’s Hob Salons wiped the floor at last month’s British Hairdressing Awards (BHAs) winning three titles – all for the third time – landing the 23-salon group a triple entry into the prestigious hall of fame. First its Creative Team – which includes Sean Dawson, Claire Dawson and Darren Bain – was crowned Artistic Team of the Year, joining its trophies from 2008 and 2009. Member Christel Lundqvist also picked up the award for British Colour Technician of the Year, which she has won for three consecutive years. Finally, beating off stiff competition from the most talented hairdressers in the UK, Hob director Akin Konizi was presented with the award for British Hairdresser of the Year – an accolade he also secured in 2008 and 2009. All three winners will join a list of

esteemed hairdressing greats meaning they can’t enter their category in the future. Konizi says: “I was thrilled to not only win the British Hairdresser of the Year award, but also the Artistic Team of the Year and Colour award - all for a third time. Words cannot describe how proud the team at Hob Salons is to be recognised as the best in Britain, and we look forward to flying the flag for British hairdressing over the next year. Thank you to everyone for their amazing support.” Attended by over 1,750 industry insiders, this year’s BHAs, which were held at Park Lane’s swanky Grosvenor House hotel, was compared by television star Jonathan Ross. X Factor finalist Marcus Collins, who was a stylist at Liverpool’s Jonathan James salon until recently, took to the stage as a special guest presenting Newcomer of the Year Jasmine Redstone of Rush in Croydon with her award.

Meanwhile I Need a Dollar singer Aloe Blacc provided the crowd with some musical entertainment. Among this year’s other winners were Men’s Hairdresser of the Year Jamie Stevens, Afro Hairdresser Junior Green, Avant Garde Hairdresser Indira Schauwecker from Toni and Guy London and Ken Picton for Wales and South West Hairdresser of the Year. Jayne Lewis-Orr, publisher and editor in chief of organiser Hairdressers Journal International, says: “British hairdressing is renowned throughout the world for its creativity and innovation, and with the British Hairdressing Awards we continue to recognise, reward and celebrate the best of British. The standard of entries in all categories this year was incredible and the judges had a really difficult job. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners who truly are the best of British.”

Linda Moore from Sally Salon Services in Swindon has been awarded £10,000 after being named the firm’s Top Store Manager. Her new title was announced during a Sex and the City themed Winners Weekend event at Whittlebury Hall in Northampton at the end of November held by the company to recognise its top performing staff. All of its 272 store managers were eligible to compete for the accolade and were given the chance to bag a number of other awards that celebrate specialist areas such as sales, customer service and promotional success. Sally Beauty Holdings’ managing director Richard Hull, who was there to present Moore with the prize, says: “The Winners Weekend is an opportunity for us to recognise our amazing staff who work so hard to deliver the best possible service and expert advice to our customers. Linda’s contribution to our business has been outstanding this year.”

Skincare innovations are being ignored by fatigued consumers, reveals new report According to recent research from data analyst Elemis expert Datamonitor, consumers are becoming so befuddled by the scale of new skincare and bodycare launches that almost half (49 per cent) are failing to notice them at all. The Future of Skincare: Consumption Trends and Product Preferences report also suggests that the claims being made by many brands aren’t being heard - leading to 55 per cent of consumers sticking to tried and tested brands they know and trust instead of trying out new innovations. Michaela Peck, report author and analyst at Datamonitor, explains: “Our research shows that consumers are becoming fatigued by the amount of product choice on offer. This leads to an unfavourable situation with customers ‘reverting to type’ and choosing to ignore product innovation.” According to the report, consumers want “freshness, purity and professional recommendation by medical professionals”, which is something is says they’re not getting from many product houses. “The need for skincare brands to better engage with consumers is evident,” continues Peck. “Companies need to address the confusion and frustration that results from overextended product lines and ensure that customers understand the true value of the product.” But it’s not all bad news: those that do get it right stand to reap rich rewards as Datamonitor predicts the market is ripe for increase across the globe.

Stockport stylist awarded the Clothes Show’s Young Hairdresser of the Year Leah Watson from The Colour Room in Stockport was awarded with the coveted Young Hairdresser of the Year title at last month’s Clothes Show Live. Judged by a panel of experts including the likes of Errol Douglas, HJ’s Kate Woods and Your Hair editor Michelle Royle, the 23-year-old was whittled down to the final 20 before competing in the live heats stage at the show. Her winning look was a ladies style based on emerging trends described by Royle as “a beautiful modern cut with great colour that’s aspirational and will look great on the cover of Your Hair.” The winner was awarded with £1,000, which she plans to give back to her salon. The two-day consumer event also hosted the UK Beauty Awards, which recognises established and up and coming brands. The Winners included Liz Earle, Batiste and Neal’s Yard Remedies, which took the prizes for Classic Beauty Product, Best New Hair Product and Best Organic Product respectively.

Winter-proof digits Cold air and central heating spells trouble for your clients’ skin and nails. But with the right professional treatments, advice and home care, optimum beauty is well within reach

W

inter isn’t just a minefield for our hair and faces. Exposed to the elements, subzero temperatures take their toll on our hands and nails too while neglected feet, put out of sight and mind, become starved of proper care. “During the winter the skin becomes very dehydrated while the nails become brittle and break easily,” says Georgie Smedley, director of Nail Harmony UK. “So in the cold weather, both need a little extra TLC.” Cold temperatures in fact lead to poor blood circulation. Kelly Winterburn, one of CND’s UK education ambassadors, explains: “As a result the skin doesn’t get enough nutrients and oxygen and all the healthy, regenerative processes slow down leading it to lose its healthy colour and become dull or pale.” But it’s not just the cold weather that inflicts the damage. Similar to the process posed on winter hair and skin, switching from freezing outside temperatures to centrally heated rooms wreaks havoc on the nails too. “When you shift between the two the difference is so big and stressful for your skin that it naturally cannot balance itself quickly enough,” adds Winterburn. “This results in loss of hydration, irritation, widened capillaries and redness. All of this contributes to your skin’s misbalance, stress, sensitivity and dryness. The same thing can happen to your nails making them dry and flaky.”

To the rescue

So how can salons help clients minimise the effects? Smedley says nail professionals need to “instil the necessity” for regular hand and nail maintenance in

the minds of their customers. “This is also a great way of increasing business during the colder months,” she says. Meanwhile, Carly Marsden, ambassador for Bio Sculpture, advises offering a free hand massage using the appropriate cream after every nail treatment as standard during the cold months. “The extra attention to the nails and skin will soon sort the problem out,” she says, “especially if they’re able to continue using a cream and cuticle treatment at home.” For Laura Hughes, national education manager for Grafton International, the best way to treat clients in the winter is to upscale your basic manicure and pedicures to luxurious and indulgent services. “Salons should introduce paraffin wax, hot oil, masks and exfoliation,” she says. “Exfoliation helps remove the dead skin before moisturising and makes a huge difference when applying hand creams and lotions.” For neglected winter feet, the experts also suggest more winter-warming extras

and extra moisture for maximum results. Winterburn even suggests customising your services with a selection of products to suit their needs. She says: “Try seasonal services in winter such as a customised CND SpaManicure or SpaPedicure. Or go one step further and incorporate a heat treatment such as paraffin wax or heated mitts or booties; adding heat will really get the circulation going.” Meanwhile, for Smedley, sprinkling some unadulterated luxury into every service will help put the spring back into every client’s step. “Try adding a warming foot massage with aromatherapy oils, before placing the hands or feet into heated mitts or booties,” she says. “This will be enjoyable for the client while encouraging the skin to absorb the oils.” Additionally, Marsden suggests incorporating a mini body massage to make it “extra special”. She says: “There’s always extra time when the moisturiser is soaking in so why not try a leg, arm or even shoulder massage? This will really relax your client and make the treatment feel luxurious.” Finally, no winter hand and foot care service is complete without suggesting some great retail products so clients can continue the good work at home. “Homecare is a must - not only for our profit margin, but for the upkeep of your treatments,” says Winterburn. “Remember it doesn’t have to be about the hard sell, we are simply providing the client with items she would more than likely buy on the high street. So why not increase your profits and also help the client achieve the best results with items that are specifically designed for them?”

As the UK becomes increasingly cosmopolitan, savvy salon owners are fine-tuning their menus to cater for a wider variety of ethnic groups

A

ccording to estimations from the Office of National Statistics, the UK’s ethnic population now stands at nine million people. Moreover, we also have the fastest growing mixed race population in the world. So when it comes to catering for a multicultural client base, how adaptable is your salon menu? Ethnic groups of course have varying skin and hair types so whether they’re European, Asian, Hispanic or AfricanCaribbean, ensuring that your team can cater for their individual needs is essential if you want to widen your target market. Salon owner Junior Green, who recently won Afro Hairdresser of the Year 2011 at the British Hairdressing Awards, thinks ethnic cllients offer great potential for properly trained hairdressers. “The market is growing in certain areas and these clients are in need of professional hair stylists that can cater for their hair type,” he says. “Catering for these markets is a great way to bring in extra revenue.” Training is of course key in hairdressing

if you’re looking to service a multicultural clientbase properly. “It’s paramount that salon owners send team members for training,” says Green. “Staff must be confident in all areas to successfully carry out these types of services.” For beauty salons, while it is not always necessary to send staff on additional training courses, it’s important that they’re aware of the differing needs from culture to culture. While white skin can age more rapidly thanks to sun damage, darker skin types come with their own sets of potential problems. Tracey Tamaris, UK director of training for iiaa and Environ, explains: “Black skin is particularly vulnerable to keloid scarring and to pigmentation issues following trauma. It needs more careful treatment when it comes to treating problematic and congested skin. Meanwhile oriental people are lucky that their skin ages more slowly in appearance because of the higher levels of beta-carotene that is naturally present. It’s important that therapists are aware of the differences.”

Likewise for nail technicians, specialist training obviously isn’t a requirement to service ethnic clients. However, with nail enhancements and nail art being widely embraced by many diverse cultures, expanding your target market could be a lucrative move. “An understanding is required of these cultural attitudes towards nail decoration, styles and colours as they can represent different things to different ethnic backgrounds,” explains Georgie Smedley, director of Nail Harmony UK. “It’s absolutely vital that salons do their research and homework.” So as soon as you’ve put plans in place to cater for a more diverse market, spreading the word among the community is essential to draw in a new network of clients. “Good communication is key,” says Smedley. “Talk to your suppliers and ask how they can help you promote their products with POS material and marketing literature. Good publicity is so vitally important to get the ball rolling and then, as is the case in most ethnic communities, word of mouth travels fast.”

’ve been running our multiawarding winning salon the Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa in Cheltenham with my husband for over seven years. However, I’ve not always been involved in the world of hairdressing – I actually began my career in the hospitality industry. And having previously worked for five-star luxury hotels, I believe I know a thing or two when it comes to offering an excellent service. “The overall client experience is often overlooked by salon owners as being secondary to the actual hair or beauty sevice. However, it is equally as important. To succeed in this business, it’s absolutely vital that your team offers a fantastic level of service in every sense of the word. “Treating each and every client as a VIP and striving to ensure that every experience is a positive one – from the moment they arrive to the time they leave – will go a long way in securing a return visit. “So how do we do this in our salon? Hotels have inspired a lot of what we do. Geared specifically towards guest comfort, I feel their influence has helped us achieve

our goals. Our clients are ushered into a lounge area after ‘checking in’ to await their stylist and our staff actively encourage them to leave their stresses and strains at the door. If, however, they need to work we ensure that they have the free WiFi password and find them somewhere more conducive to their needs. “We’re lucky enough to be housed in a beautiful Regency townhouse and have restored it to its former glory, preserving many of the original features. Clients will relax by marble fireplaces while their colour develops or gaze at the intricate plaster cornicing on the ceiling of the backwash. From start to finish the client experience is more akin to that of a luxury hotel spa than a hair salon. And I feel that this really helps us stand out from the crowd.” Sara Holmes runs the multi award winning Stuart Holmes Hair and Beauty Spa alongside her husband, which they opened together in Cheltenham in 2003.
