As apprentices can have a knock-on effect to the reputation and revenue of a business, Kleek Apprenticeships share five tips on how to get the most out of your candidate.

Use The Right Tools

When you start your search for a new apprentice there can seem to be a lot to take on board. Working with an established training provider can help take up the strain, with support and assistance to help you find the right candidate and they will give you the knowledge and tools required to make the apprenticeship a success.

Get The First Day Right

Once you have decided on the right person for the role and their first day comes around take the time to properly induct them into your salon. Your new apprentice may have just left school and this new life can be quite daunting. Introduce them to their new colleagues, show them around the salon, give them a good explanation of their new role, give them time to settle in and make sure they know the rules of your salon, don’t presume they know things like no mobile phones on the salon floor.

Fail to Prepare, Prepare to Fail

Get the best out of your new apprentice by letting them know how life in their new role will progress. Working with your training provider, set out a week-by-week timetable. An example would be weeks 1-4 could be shadowing an experienced member of staff while helping to keep the salon presentable, week 4 could be learning and performing hair washes for colleagues’ clients. This gives them a target to aim for and keeps them engaged and moving forward.

Leave Your Door Open

Let your apprentice know you and their colleagues are there to answer any questions they have and encourage feedback from your apprentice on how they think their apprenticeship is going. Have regular reviews to see how they think are progressing, ensuring they are happy and that they are learning at a pace you are both happy with.

Celebrate Their Wins

People thrive on happy feelings, when your apprentice hits a milestone in their training share it on your social media channels, congratulate them and give them praise when it is earned. A happy worker is a good worker, and it will give them a reason to push on and complete their apprenticeship even quicker. kleekapprenticeships.co.uk
