Marc Antoni partner Bruno Marc is named the Fellowship’s Hairdresser of the Year

runo Marc, partner at Southern England salon group Marc Antoni, has been named Hairdresser of the Year 2012 by the Fellowship for British Hairdressing. Announced at the organisation’s annual awards ceremony and luncheon inside London’s upmarket Dorchester Hotel, he was presented with his gong by Fellowship president Marc Creed and HJ’s Jayne Lewis-Orr in front of some of the biggest names in the hair industry. The Marc Antoni group began 47 years ago when Bruno Marc’s father Bruno Giamattei opened his first salon in Reading. Today his four sons – Bruno, Simon, Marcus and Aaron – lead the

business with a successful creative team and seven salons across Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire. Following his win, Bruno Marc, who has also helped the company earn the BHA title for Southern Hairdresser of the Year twice previously, commented: “This is an amazing win for myself and for Marc Antoni. Accepting the award really was a high point in my career and at that moment I was extremely proud to be part of the British hairdressing industry.” Fellowship president Creed adds: “Bruno’s a truly worthy recipient of Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year. His passion, energy and commitment for our craft is truly legendary and he inspires all around him. His emotion on being

announced as winner encapsulated his humility and it was obvious to see that he was deeply moved by the rapturous applause and standing ovation. It couldn’t have gone to a more worthy winner.” The event’s other winners included Jamie Stevens, who was named Media Personality of the Year; Hob Salons for Group Salon of the Year win; and Toni Mascolo OBE who was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The young stylists selected to be part of this year’s prestigious F.A.M.E Team were also announced and include William Ackerley from Electric Hairdressing, Joshua Goldsworthy of Goldworthy’s, Westrow’s Mathew Sutcliffe and Jack Ungar from Hob Salons.

Salon social Over 300 people attended Haringtons’ Trainee Awards and Show recently, which saw 50 talented first, second and third year apprentices from the group’s 12 salons presenting models live on stage. Among the evening’s award winners included Jack Montgomery who picked up a Bonnifaci Award and Reading’s Ayeisha Green who was awarded with the HJ Front Cover Trophy. Jason and India Miller and the Charlie Miller artistic team presented a Voices for L’Oreal Professionnel seminar last month at the salon group’s Edinburgh academy. Attended by 70 stylists from across Scotland, the team shared a series of creative ideas live on stage including creating the perfect beach blondes and pastel tones in the salon.

Paul Mitchell’s co-founder John Paul DeJoria headed a launch party in London last month to mark the brand’s new partnership with Cruelty Free International. Paul Mitchell has pledged that its products will not be sold in China until the country changes it laws on animal testing. Global organisation Cruelty Free International is calling on regulators around the world to introduce a ban on animal testing for cosmetics and ingredients.

Central College Nottingham unveiled the results of a £4 million makeover last month with an education evening featuring live demonstrations from Goldwell’s Lisa Whiteman. Formally known as South Nottingham College, the re-brand is part of the school’s long-term strategy to improve education in Nottingham. Since hitting our screens at the beginning of last month, this year’s Dancing on Ice has been offering viewers a plethora of show-stopping outfits as well as some impressive hair and beauty looks. Behind the entire cast’s weekly hairstyles is celebrity stylist Paul Haskell. And from Ashley Robert’s glamorous up-dos to Samia Ghadie’s beachy waves, he’s been working up to eight hours in advance of each show with OSiS+ styling essentials and hairpieces by Brit brand Additional Lengths to ensure every contestant has photo worthy tresses on the ice. Meanwhile, when it comes to the cast’s nails, competing with the sequined and embellished dresses is a tall order. CREATE THE RIGHT AMBIENCE The importance of setting the right scene for your pedicure services shouldn’t be underestimated. “Privacy and comfort are essential so clients can reach a deep state of relaxation,” says Claire Stokes, training manager for B Line. “The mood can be enhanced by using products with a signature fragrance, such as B Line’s Lavender and Geranium. Offer the fragrance oil as retail for clients so they can replicate the experience at home.”

If there’s a problem you can’t deal with in the salon, refer clients to a medically trained foot care specialist. “Foot care should be more than just cosmetic and address the client’s overall long term health,” says Dabbs.

MAKE IT DECADENT

FILE BEFORE SOAKING Contrary to popular belief, top foot care experts recommend filing the feet dry before they are soaked. “My best tip is to always file the feet when they are bone dry because damp skin can disguise problem areas so the process won’t be as affective after a soak,” says top chiropodist Margaret Dabbs, who founded her namesake foot care range and pioneered the Medical Pedicure (Margaret Dabbs Foot File; Tel: 0207 487 5510, Leighton Denny Foot File Tel: 0845 8620 515).

DON’T SCRIMP ON EXTRAS “Offer fruit teas or a juice cocktail to complement your pedicures,” suggests Mica Pinczuk, national sales and education director for Super Nail and Beauty. “These extras will upgrade the treatment to a spa experience, providing a full sensory treatment.”

OFFER SOAK-OFF GEL

Luxurious extras – such as paraffin wax masks and heated booties – can help turn an ordinary pedicure into a decadent spa-like experience. “Not only will this help the skin absorb products, but it will also ease tension in the feet and feel warm and comfortable,” says Lee Moore, educator and event session tech for Lena White. “And for those clients who suffer from arthritis – it will help alleviate the ache for a while.”

Capitalise on the growing demand for soak-off gel by offering it as an add-on service. PEDICURES RECOMMEND HOME CARE Maximise the results of every pedicure by encouraging clients to maintain their feet at home. “Retail a pumice stone to every client and advise them to slough away any build-up of hard skin when having a bath,” says Nubar educator Emma-Jayne Fryatt. “They can then smother in Nubar’s Kanne Latte Foot Butter and pop some cosy socks on for a DIY deep moisture treatment.”

MOISTURE IS KEY Put nourishing products at the centre of every pedicure for maximum results. “As the soles of the feet do not have sebaceous glands, the skin can become dry and dehydrated, so keeping them moisturised is essential,” says Pinczuk. “A foot mask is a good addition to a pedicure for extra hydration. It’s about fixing the problem, not disguising it.”

JUSTIFY A HIGHER PRICE TAG Don’t under value your pedicure services – offer the best and charge your clients accordingly.

LEARN TO EARN “Mastering the ancient art of massage will transform an ordinary pedicure into something special,” says Samantha Watkinson, director of education for Louella Belle. “Learning the basic principles of acupressure, Shiatsu, Reflexology and Swedish massage and drawing on elements from all of these will help you master the perfect touch for your client.”

PERFECT YOUR MASSAGE TECHNIQUE For many clients, the massage is the most memorable part of the pedicure – so perfecting technique is vital. “The purpose of massage is to help the client relax,” says Watkinson. “Apply plenty of pressure to avoid tickling and don’t forget to warm the massage medium in your hands before you start.”

GET INTO NAIL ART When it comes to nail art, most clients tend to be more adventurous on their toes than on their hands. So hone in on your team’s creativity to heighten the appeal of your pedicure services. “Offering either foils wraps like Minx, designs created using CND Shellac or even crystals is a great way of accessorising the feet, adding extra revenue to your pedicures and setting you salon apart from a regular service,” says CND education ambassador Justine Crick.

MEET OBJECTIVES Ensuring you meet every client’s pedicure objectives is essential to maintain repeat custom. “Carry out a thorough consultation and find out what your client wants from the treatment,” says Nubar educator Belinda Price. “They may want the hard skin on her feet removing or French and can’t do it themselves. Meeting your client’s objectives will keep them coming back.”

AIM FOR PERFECTION “A pedicure will never look beautiful unless the toes are given a tidy frame,” says Nail Harmony’s Georgie Smedley. “This means using excellent tools to ensure the cuticle work is absolutely precise. There should be no hang nails or dry cuticles and the nail fold surrounding the nail plate should be neat without any breaks or tears. This makes painting much easier and you will achieve smoother lines around the edges giving that airbrushed look.”

The launch party WHAT IT INVOLVES: Whether you’re unveiling a new salon interior or introducing a cutting edge service, insalon launch parties can be a great way to introduce your investment to regular clients and additional fans. THE ADVOCATE: Winchester salon Guy Kremer recently hosted an event to mark the launch of its Shu Uemura makeup and cosmetics range. Held inside a marquee erected in its outside courtyard, guests were treated to drinks, Japanese food courtesy of a local restaurant, live music, a mini catwalk show, artists and goodie bags. Kremer says: “The object was to excite the local community and drive clients to purchase retail items and book in appointments.” EVENT PROS: A party can help motivate staff, introduce potential clients to the salon or new service and show regulars that they’re valued. EVENT CONS: Time and cash investment can be high depending on the desired results. HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN: Salon owner Kremer worked alongside the Shu Uemura press office to organise his FUDGE

To make the organisation process easier, team members were all given specific job roles such as sourcing food and drink as well as booking models and entertainment. “We prepared a function sheet that listed all jobs and who was responsible for each,” he says. “It takes a lot of organising to put together a successful party and one has to be careful to stick to a budget – but the investment is worth every penny.”

The pop-up salon WHAT IT INVOLVES: Pop-up salons have progressed from the pop-up shop concept – an idea that began in the US and became popular in the early ‘00s when Comme Des Garcons opened a temporary retail space in Berlin. The idea allows brands to take their message to new locations without committing to a permanent residency, therefore increasing awareness for minimal overheads. THE ADVOCATE: Fudge recently joined forces with architect Zana Hadid to launch a pop-up salon inside her Clerkenwellbased gallery. Inside the brand’s creative team offered invitees hair advice and

styling as well as cut and colour services. “Pop-up salons are a modern thing to do nowadays and they create such a buzz,” says the brand’s creative director John Vial. “It is a fantastic way for testing the water if you are looking to open another salon in a different area or location and it puts your name and brand out there while giving you the opportunity create an interest.” EVENT PROS: Creating brand awareness, exciting new clients and inspiring staff. In the right venue, a pop-up salon can also generate extra revenue for the business. EVENT CONS: Staff being away from the main salon and the cash injection needed for advertising and to create a buzz. HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN: According to Vial, finding the best location is key when masterminding your own pop-up salon space. “Hair salons will need a backwash, so when choosing a location you need to consider this,” he explains. “You need to use the space you have very wisely and pay attention to detail. For example, we used candles, sweets and magazines to make clients and the salon atmosphere feel amazing. You’ll also need to consider health and safety, carry out risk assessments, and make sure you’ll have a big enough power supply.”

Last year each client visiting the salon that month received a colour consultation, goodie bag and a balloon to pop containing a piece of paper offering a free treat such as a product, manicure or eyelash tint. Every colour client also received a free treatment on the day and was entered into a prize draw for two Golden Pamper Days. “August is a quiet month so I thought it would be a good way to create some excitement in the salon,” says Jackson. “Local press have always got behind us and we always have coverage in the likes of Time Out.” EVENT PROS: Brings awareness to potential new clients, helps increase bookings and re-bookings afterwards. customers brought guests.” EVENT PROS: Motivates the team, generates press interest, boosts interest and excitement among regular and potential clients, spreads word-of-mouth and helps build customer relations. EVENT CONS: Organising a successful fashion show takes a lot of work and can be expensive if other local businesses aren’t willing to offer their services for free. HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN: Research local events in your area and contact the organisers to find out how your business can get involved. Speak to local boutique owners and department stores and offer your services for free in return for credits to raise brand awareness. Alternatively, if you’d like to run your own catwalk show in the salon, keep costs down by asking local firms and product suppliers to contribute with food, drink and products.

THE ADVOCATE: North England’s Westrow group held a competition in 2010 to coincide with a re-brand and Valentine’s Day promotion giving away 400 free haircuts across its seven salons. The campaign took the form of a 10-day competition on Facebook, in the local press and on the salon’s website. Tasks to enter included uploading images onto social media or answering questions on the history of the brand. “The idea was to create awareness of the new branding and to attract new clients,” say owners Marc Westerman and Steve Rowbottom. “Out of over 2,000 entries, the 1,600 who didn’t win a complimentary cut and finish were offered services to be taken by a certain date at a 50 per cent reduction on normal prices. Giving away 400 free haircuts ensured a vast number of new clients would be visiting our salons and our aim was for them to become regular clients in the future.” PROS: Press exposure, heightened social media presence and new clients. CONS: Difficult to manage and requires a team to co-ordinate as well as loss of revenue during time used for free haircuts. HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN: Westrow enlisted the help of a marketing specialist for its re-brand and competition. However, a simplified version of the same idea could be launched with the help of social media.

THE EVENT:

The in-salon awards WHAT IT INVOLVES: Hosting an awards ceremony to recognise hard work while showcasing your team’s efforts in front of new and regular clients will help build brand awareness while boosting customer loyalty. THE ADVOCATE: Chelsea’s Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa organises an annual awards scheme for its apprentices. The event allows learners to present their work and skills to independent judges, management and senior colleagues helping them grow their technical abilities and confidence. “Any team experience is good for the business,” says manager Gavin Hoare. “It gives our young stylists the starter skills of presenting and thinking about their work, it bonds the junior and senior teams and it is a way of

bringing in the parents and family that are helping support the next generation of hairdressers.” PROS: Promotes skills, introduces stylists to new customers, helps raise staff morale and pushes team to new levels. CONS: Takes time to organise and judge as well as needing financial backing. HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN: The Richard Ward salon team begins by securing industry judges, setting the date and inviting the guests. Those eligible for awards are then given a competition brief for the evening so they are clear about what is expected of them. They also have preceding appointment slots with their model to practise on their final look. Hoare says: “As we’ve been running our Junior of the Year event for a number of years we are easily organised once the date has been set. The main task is offering the young team members help and advice prior to the evening.”

Customer open evening WHAT IT INVOLVES: Client open days or evenings can be a great way to raise you salon’s profile and introduce new customers to your selection of services. THE ADVOCATE: Bearsden’s Rainbow Room International regularly holds this type of event and its recent Bring Your Own Hairbrush evening – where clients and their friends were invited to the salon to learn how to re-create the perfect blowdry at home – was a big hit. Attendees were also encouraged to try out different styling techniques on each other and were RICHARD WARD

offered a £10 discount on pre-bookings made on the night alongside wine and nibbles as well as a free product gift to take home. “This type of event lets potential clients experience first-hand what services you have on offer and is a great introduction to your team,” says the salon’s Coco McManon. “It is a fun, relaxed evening while it is also a great way to win the trust and respect of your local community and raise your profile in the area.” PROS: Low costs, helps stylists build personal relationships with clients, introduces new people to the salon, inspires clients with fresh ideas and raises the salon’s profile in the local area through good word-of-mouth. CONS: Stylists will have to work out of opening hours. HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN: McManon recommends carrying out surveys on a regular basis to find out which kind of events customers will be interested in attending and the best days and times they’re free. When the date and theme is finalised, she suggests giving clients two months’ notice and inviting them along with a friend by email or asking them in the salon. Finally, ensure staff are on board and delegate their job role so they can help organise the event. “Keep it small with potentially two clients per stylist,” says McManon. “When working this way you can create a calm and relaxed environment and it stops it from being too long. Our biggest successes are styling evenings where we are teaching our clients. We measure the success of our client evenings by a call back system, which from past experience has been fantastic.”

Changing rooms Stuart Holmes reveals how to take the stress out of a salon refurbishment

“A

ll salon owners at some stage or another will have to manage a refurbishment overhaul. This may be when the salon first opens and again a few years later when it’s in need of a new look. “Most of us have undertaken some sort of redecorating project at home. From doing a bit of DIY to overseeing builders constructing an extension, dabbling with home improvements is the norm in today’s society. However, there is a big difference between managing renovations at home to overseeing a refit of your commercial premises. That said, the same principals apply: • Employ a contractor that you trust • Keep a firm grip on your budget • Get multiple quotes • Be on-site regularly overseeing the work • Manage your clients’ expectations “Our flagship salon in Cheltenham has been open for nearly 10 years and last summer we undertook a complete refit of the premises. The key for me in completing this project successfully lay in the planning and managing of the budget. “The difference between starting work in a domestic environment compared with that in a commercial sense is revenue loss. Everyday you close the salon equates to lost revenue and a wage bill that still has to be paid. “So when deciding whether to complete any work, first look at your annual

performance figures. Study them carefully and see which months appear to be the quietest on average. Clever phasing of a job may mean that you do not have to close your salon at all. Commercial builders and shop fitters often come with large teams that can complete jobs quickly and with minimum disruption to business revenues. Working over weekends and evenings may be required so you can continue to facilitate paying clients during normal salon times. If you are negotiating a fixed price contract with a builder, look at a penalty clause that may entitle you to financial compensation if the works run over the outlined time frame. “Following this, ensure that you get at least three quotes from different contractors for the job. On bigger projects, you could produce a tender pack, which contains all the details and specification of the work that needs doing. This will ensure that all the contractors are quoting for the same level of work. “Don’t be nervous to shop around for fixtures and fittings too. A shop fitter may be able to source you one thing but with a bit of your own research, you may be able to find bargains elsewhere. In our salon, we actually did a deal with the administrators of Habitat when the business was going into liquidation. “Managing client expectations during the refurbishment is as critical an element as any, so let your clients know when your salon will be closed. Individuals who are in a six-weekly appointment habit may experience some disruption. Likewise, clients may be planning to book an appointment to coincide with a special occasion yet may be unable to do so due to your works schedule. Be transparent with your clients and keep them up to date. If you can keep your salon open during the refurbishment, I would advise a courtesy call to anyone booked in to advising them of the work. If they choose to rebook, that is a far better solution than them leaving disappointed with their experience. Most importantly though, in the whole process of managing

a salon refurbishment, you must create an environment that is practical for your staff but also provides a wow factor element for your clients. And if you don’t have a design eye, bring in the professionals and employ the services of an interior designer. hat better way to motivate your team than to enter an industry competition? Win or lose, it really is the taking part that counts and the experience team members can gain could prove to be priceless to your business. “But of course entering competitions isn’t easy and success is all about hard work, passion and creativity. As the late Vidal Sassoon said: ‘the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary’. It’s worth it though, because the knowledge gained along the way will stay with an up-and-coming industry professional forever. “When entering the salon for team

competitions, ensure you pick each member carefully giving more experienced staff the chance to take control while allowing the less experienced to assist and grow. Give everyone specific responsibilities and time scales. Also, remember that for less experienced team members, entering competitions can be a daunting task – so reassure them that it’s fine to ask for help. “As well as inspiring the actual entrant, individual competitions can also help build team morale. While they can only be entered by individual team members, there’s nothing to stop the whole salon getting involved from helping to design mood boards to developing concepts. And if possible, the entire team should
