Staying in the loop BABTAC Launches T.I.M.E at Parliament This week BABTAC has launched its T.I.M.E initiative at the Houses of Parliament supported by several influential bodies and key figures across the industry, including the Beauty Backed Trust and ambassador founder Caroline Hirons, Millie Kendall OBE, founder and CEO of the British Beauty Council, skincare expert and founder of the Black Skin Directory, Dija Ayodele, and Skin Group International Founder Candice Glanville. A regulatory checklist, T.I.M.E will provide the framework necessary to ensure that consumers are aware of what to be mindful of when booking a service with a beauty therapist. Lesley Blair MBE, Chair of BABTAC said: “Lack of regulation in our industry means that consumers are being exposed to potentially unsafe situations all too often, and so we’ve seen a wave of ‘botched’ beauty treatments in recent years as a result. This regulatory checklist aims to serve as a simple but effective reminder for consumers to help them choose evidence-based, professional fit for purpose services, whilst minimising any risk.” @babtac
Meet Pre-, the new, multi-service premium beauty salon With the flagship salon in Islington and further salons set to open next year, Pre- is on a mission to shake up the market and offer something new when it comes to beauty maintenance. Pre- was launched by female founder Mimi Gaston-Kennedy, who found the logistics of booking treatments at different singleservice locations time-consuming and struggled to find a multi-service salon that delivered consistent levels of service at an accessible price point. Ultimately, the Pre- experience is all about meeting beauty needs. Guests can even enjoy “Pre- Drinks” while they enjoy their pampering session! Pre- has established a loyal following of customers who visit time and time again. Regular visitors can also benefit from the “Pre- VIP” membership, which offers exclusive access to discounted treatment rates and perks. www.presalons.com

INDUSTRY UPDATE
NHBF Survey Shows the Sector Remains Steady The latest National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) quarterly State of the Industry survey shows the sector in a positive position as it generally remains stable. The signs of positivity seen in previous surveys in April and July have slowed across some indicators but overall, the situation is steady, with a slight rise in businesses making a small or good profit (45%) and a similar number of businesses breaking even (42%). Slightly fewer businesses are making a loss which continues to be a move in the right direction. Rosina Robson, NHBF Director of Policy and Public Affairs, said: “While there is not the same headline growth as in the past two quarters, most of the indicators haven’t fallen and some of the net trends show an improvement. Businesses are still under pressure from all sides including stubbornly high inflation, energy costs, rising wage costs and the lack of availability of experienced staff to grow their business, all of which the NHBF is working with government to tackle whilst we ensure we provide real solutions, solid support and advice for our Members.” @nhbfsocial

COVER STORY
Treatments For The Stars In an exclusive interview with Katie Vaughan, Head of Marketing at Alma Lasers, we explore the advantages of offering treatments that are linked with celebrity brand ambassadors to boost reputation and increase bookings.
What benefits do brand ambassadors provide in terms of marketing?
Celebrity ambassadors can provide significant advantages to clinic marketing due to their fame, influence, and large following. All of which act to boost a clinic’s reputation, credibility, and client base. Some key benefits include enhanced business credibility as their association with treatment clinics implies that their services meet high ‘A-list’ standards, boosting trust amongst potential clients. This also means other local ‘micro-influencers’, who also have a large reach, may be more amenable to working with clinics in exchange for a free treatment. It goes without saying, that the star power of ambassadors means marketing content featuring the celebrity is highly attractive to consumers, we often see this gets the highest social engagement and click through rates, as such increasing the success of the clinic’s brand awareness and patient conversion rate.

RISING STAR
Ready, Set, Glam! Gabby Brooks has always had a creative flair, when she studied hair and beauty she discovered her talent for customer service, fusing this together she has become a makeup maestro and shares her story as this month’s Rising Star.
When did you notice your passion for makeup?
I’ve always enjoyed playing with makeup and was interested in different products and brands. I used to practice on myself when I was younger, but it wasn’t until I went to college and decided to take a hair and beauty course that I had the opportunity to take advantage of my last year of free education and expand my skills. I didn’t learn much at college in terms of technique and style, but I did find my passion for delivering a fantastic customer service to clients. I was always artistic throughout my younger years, but never truly found my real connection to being an artist until I found makeup. I combined customer service and beauty together and that’s when I knew
I would take makeup further, the course opened my eyes to taking it on as a job and earning money from something I enjoyed. I realised I could make people feel good, which was a rewarding role.
How did you find your style, and what are your tips for other makeup professionals trying to stand out?
Gabby Brooks

I went on from college to do another makeup course, this was an intense 1-2-1 where I took two models with me for a duration of two days. I learnt techniques regarding how to use the brushes and recreated makeup styles I chose from @thesalonmaguk

the tutor’s Instagram page. When I came away from the course, I worried if I was going to be able remember the skills. The first time it went so well, but then I had a little break and had to remember all the tips and tricks again. To maintain high quality in your skills, I would recommend practicing 24/7 as it is key to memorising and picking up your preferred way of painting a face. My clientele and regulars all seem to be between 30 to 45 and the style of makeup they ask for is more natural than I had trained originally. I have adapted to that being my own personal style. Of course, I kept practicing dramatic and heavier makeup, so that I can do this kind
RISING STAR of glam when requested.
Instagram is a key marketing tool for beauty businesses, how have you successfully built your following and what content works best?
To start building your Instagram page, you have to have confidence, consistency, motivation and, most importantly, patience. I believe the key to success is starting off by doing as many models as you can to create a portfolio. I’ve found my clients interact with reels or stories of me doing my makeup too. This also allows clients to see the products you would use and if you make it look good, it’s an advert for bookings! Constant posting is essential, no one wants to look at a page that doesn’t post enough or barely has anything to show, setting up a logo and a structured page also makes you look professional. Be consistent and make an effort with your photos as they reflect your work; focus on your lighting and backgrounds to enhance your posts.
With New Year’s Eve round the corner, how do you increase your bookings for party season?
New Year’s Eve is an easy win! Everyone loves getting dressed up and it’s only your advertising and consistency that will entice people to book and remind them to get their glam on. Try to post as much as possible leading up to New Year’s Eve and create engaging posts that will increase interaction on your stories, including polls.
What are your goals for the future and how do you plan on achieving them? I plan to build on my skills as I am always trying to think of how I can progress, I have a few ideas of perhaps learning a new service that goes along quite well with makeup. I also have plans to train with different styled MUAs to refresh my skills, learn new things and bring something to the area that isn’t yet available. The only way to improve and be better is to keep learning and continue to practice, upload as much as possible and stay active. @gabbrooksmua

PROMOTION
Leaders in Education In 2023, the hair and beauty apprenticeship industry saw significant developments, setting the stage for a promising 2024. We find out how Kleek Apprenticeships, the UK’s favourite hair and beauty apprenticeship provider is leading the way in providing training and education to deliver these and future developments to salons and apprentices across the country.
Kleek Apprenticeships: A Fresh and Dynamic Brand The year 2023 began with the exciting launch of Kleek Apprenticeships, quickly becoming the preferred choice for individuals aspiring to build careers in the hair and beauty industry. The brand’s success is rooted in hard work, dedication, and a passionate team, resulting in a series of remarkable accomplishments that have left a lasting impact on the industry.
A Year of Accomplishments
Kleek Apprenticeships’ journey in 2023 was marked by consistent achievements, both among their learners and the salons they served. A notable highlight was the exceptional performance of Kleek apprentices in their End-Point Assessments (EPA). This underscores the high-quality education and training offered by Kleek, setting a new standard in the industry.
Awards and Recognition
In July 2023, Kleek Apprenticeships proudly celebrated two significant awards at the VTCT Excellence Awards. Natasha Bloor from Bliss Hair in Nottingham was honoured as Apprentice of The Year, a testament to the excellence and dedication displayed by Kleek’s apprentices. Nicola Aviolet, a National Training Manager at Kleek, was recognised as Educator of the Year, highlighting her commitment to training and mentorship provided by the organisation. Moreover, Kleek Apprenticeships received high praise in the Training Provider of the Year

category, reinforcing their dedication to excellence.
Expansion and Growth
Kleek Apprenticeships’ success extended beyond awards and accolades. In October 2023, they launched the Kleek Academy in Colchester, Essex, exemplifying their commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education and training. This expansion has enabled more aspiring hair and beauty professionals to benefit from the expertise and support offered by Kleek. Also, the recruitment of new educators to the Kleek team further enhanced the quality of education provided to apprentices across the UK.
An Evolving Industry
In addition to Kleek’s achievements of 2023, the Level 2 Hair Professional Standard was updated, further raising the

bar for apprenticeships in hairdressing and barbering. The original standard, which covered both hairdressing and barbering, has now been split into two separate apprenticeship standards: - Hairdressing Professional at Level 2 - Barbering Professional at Level 2 This revised standard represents a notable improvement over the 2016 standard, with new content added to the on-programme knowledge, reflecting the modern aspects of hair salons and barbershops. Topics include employee rights, industry ethics, infection control, social media, and a deeper understanding of various hair types and classifications. Additionally, the standard emphasises the importance of maintaining the mental health and wellbeing of both apprentices and their clients. While the on-programme skills remain
PROMOTION largely unchanged, the end point assessment now includes a 40-question knowledge test, a professional discussion, and new requirements for practical assessments, involving the performance of services on at least two different clients. These industry-wide changes signify a commitment to enhancing the quality of education and training within the hairdressing and barbering industry, aligning with ongoing efforts to maintain high standards and relevance. Kleek Apprenticeships, as a prominent player in the field, can help shape these developments and is well-positioned to support salons and apprentices to benefit from the advancements.
Looking Forward
In 2024, Kleek Apprenticeships will proudly mark a significant milestone - 25 years of providing exceptional training to the hair and beauty industry. As we approach this fantastic anniversary, Kleek Apprenticeships has exciting plans in place to develop and improve the services we offer. Our goal is to set new standards and deliver even more value. Alongside this the apprenticeship body is actively engaged in the process of updating the remaining hair and beauty apprenticeships, including the Advanced and Creative Hair Professional Level 3 and Beauty Level 2. We are committed to staying at the forefront of industry developments, ensuring that our apprentices receive the highest quality training and education. With the changes and
accomplishments of 2023 and the plans already in place for 2024, Kleek Apprenticeships, their apprentices and salons are poised for an even more promising 2024. With a quarter-century of experience

Juanita expanded on the techniques that have been successful to harness the power of social media and grow their following of over 50k: “Our strategy involves regularly sharing visually stunning nail art designs through images and video, as well as featuring a mix of influencers and celebrities at TOWNHOUSE. Additionally, we utilise Instagram for promotions, giveaways, and to create meaningful engagement with our community.” The brand has won the Scratch Award for ‘Best Nail Salon’ three years in a row, which Juanita celebrates as her most significant milestone and as recognition of their team’s dedication: “Being acknowledged in this manner is truly gratifying, and motivates us to maintain the highest standards of service and quality for our valued customers.” Looking to the future, Juanita aims to expand to new locations, bringing their services to a broader audience, while ensuring that TOWNHOUSE remains synonymous with quality and luxury. @mytownhouseuk

MARKETING
New Year, New You! As 2023 comes to a close, with expert advice from leading names in the industry, we explore how to reinvent your marketing strategy to reach your target audience, increase bookings and generate more revenue; to kick start a new business year.
W
ith a new year in sight, it’s important to reflect on your business’s successes, and areas where there is room for improvement. Marketing is vital, whether you’re just opening and are looking for an effective strategy to build a client base, or if you’re a renowned salon that wants to rebrand and introduce new treatments. With this in mind, we are delving into all areas of salon marketing, to discuss how your business can refresh its marketing campaign to exceed goals set for 2024. Emma Seldon, Founder of Hype Marketing, explained how it’s important to utilise data to improve your strategy: “The first step to planning your marketing is to review the past. Look at key statistics on your social media, email and other marketing channels. This will show you what worked, and also what didn’t. Most importantly, this will give you a base to build from and set targets for the year ahead.” The frequency of updating your strategy is a personal preference; there’s
22

no right or wrong answer. It depends on a variety of factors, such as how effective your current strategy is, how your client base has changed, what’s working for competitors and your specific goals. At Neville Hair & Beauty, Owner and L’Oreal Professionnel Ambassador, Elena Lavagni, told us how they update their marketing every quarter, for a successful strategy that is flexible and adaptable to changes: “This consistent approach ensures that we stay abreast of evolving trends, respond to customer feedback and effectively reach our target audience.” Their successful salon makes small adjustments based on performance, as well as seasonally, as customer preferences change. For example, promoting different services and products in the summer and winter. For Blue Tit Salon, their business has many elements to market, from their academy students, sustainable practices, festival crews and curly hair specialists. Therefore, their marketing requires a switch-up more often than others,

depending on audience demands and business needs. Haz Hayward, Social Media Coordinator at Blue Tit, said: “We have to look at a myriad of strategies, making small changes as platforms change, trends develop and audiences grow. We have a varied audience, and it’s not just about marketing our business to them; we also want to involve people in the Blue Tit community.” Social media marketing is a fastpaced environment, with new trends constantly evolving. Lea Shaw, Owner of Rural Fringe Hair Salon, explained the importance of constantly updating social media strategies as it’s a main point of contact with clients: “It’s very important to keep our finger on the pulse, it allows us to have a constant flow of ideas on what to share across our social platforms.” Rainbow Room International have a team dedicated to social media, who create engaging and consistent content to increase bookings. In 2023, they started a TikTok account showcasing
MARKETING unique content, such as ‘days in the life’ sharing a behind the scenes of the salon. This helped to attract a larger audience. Their Co-Owner, Linda Stewart, emphasised the importance of a dedicated social media strategy: “Many clients now go to Facebook, Instagram or TikTok to find a salon for their next appointment, and it’s crucial that salons have a presence on these platforms to avoid losing out on clients to competitors.” Successful marketing strategies are continuously shifting, with evolving technology and consumer behaviours. One observation Elena had made was the success of materials designed specifically for the client. She said: “There has been a notable shift towards personalised marketing. Salons are now using data-driven strategies to offer tailored promotions, recommendations and services to their clients.” Sean Hanna, L’Oreal Professionnel Ambassador and Owner of Sean Hanna Salons, told us their 2023 campaign focused more on educational messages to increase bookings for new services. He said: “For example, we have recently been talking about our ‘teasylights’: this involves educating clients about the technique, why they are different, how they are technically achieved and ensuring they understand the benefits to them and their hair.” Collaborating with influencers is a great way to grab the attention of their large established following: by choosing the right influencer, these followers will align with your target demographic. Samantha Cusick, Owner of Samantha Cusick Salon, ranked influencer marketing as her most successful marketing strategy in 2023. She explained the benefits: “Leveraging influencers allows us to reach a wider audience and build trust through the endorsement of trusted individuals. Influencers help generate a buzz, showcase your services and connect with potential clients. Evaluating the specific ROI and metrics from this marketing effort can provide valuable insights for future campaigns.” With technology ever-evolving, successful salon businesses are utilising advancements to make the most out of their marketing campaigns. Ijan Davies, Senior Creative Artist and JOICO EMEA Team Member, told us about the

potential that lies with salon software: “From advanced salon reports to visual mock-ups of clients taking consultations to the next level: I think this is only the beginning and we will be seeing a lot more changes in the New Year.” As salon businesses start designing their campaigns for the New Year, we asked the experts what they have in the works to stand out and increase bookings. Sean explained their plan to include real client video feedback: “So, although this may use a ‘hero’ image or video to champion a particular message, this is supported by real clients having the service and showcasing it being done, and their testimonial about the final result.” This strategy produces a more authentic communication which Sean has seen a positive response to. Safy B, Owner of Safy B’s Salon, receives the best results by creating a strong USP and brand awareness. She said: “I specialise in unique hair colouring, cutting and restyling, so I pinpoint my strengths, and capitalise on them, to create a memorable and distinct brand identity.” Understanding her target audience is another key factor, and the first step

I pinpoint my strengths and capitalise on them to create a memorable and distinct brand identity. Safy takes when designing an effective marketing campaign is determining the demographic profile of her ideal clients. She said: “You really need to ask yourself – are you targeting young professionals, brides-to-be, or fashion-forward individuals? By defining your target market, you can tailor your messaging, marketing strategies, and even your salon’s aesthetics to align with the preferences and needs of that market.” Blue Tit have created a strategy that aims to create a sense of community when the audience engages with their

business. Their social media content has a heavy focus on their staff, as they’ve found that taking a personal approach and cultivating a familiar image has had a positive effect on the client experience that follows. Haz elaborated on the benefits of fostering a sense of community online before appointments: “Sharing our online booking tools within our digital community, and making them appealing to use, then transforms that community from online to in-person. Our clients will feel a sense of familiarity before they’ve even walked through the door.” With the competitive nature of the hair and beauty industry, it’s vital that your salon business stays current and reinvents its marketing strategy to remain on top and entice new clients. Take time to look at your data and evaluate what’s working well and what needs readjusting every quarter. As seasons change, different marketing approaches will be more effective. Ultimately, the New Year is the perfect time to make significant changes, invest in new technology and excite your clients with a new look, in line with your brand identity and target demographic.

The foundation of any successful marketing campaign is a deep understanding of your target audience. Identify your ideal customers’ demographics, preferences, and pain points to tailor your marketing efforts effectively. Before you can successfully market your salon, it’s crucial to know who your potential customers are and where they are. Consider factors such as age, gender, career, lifestyle and location. Conduct surveys or gather data from your existing clients who are your biggest spenders to find patterns of customer personas. This will help you craft marketing messages that resonate with your ideal premium audience.
Set Clear Goals
Before diving into marketing activities, establish clear goals. Do you want to increase foot traffic, boost online bookings, or promote specific services? Setting goals will guide your campaign strategy. Specific and measurable goals are vital for the success of your marketing efforts. For example, if you aim to increase foot traffic, you could set a goal like, “Increase the number of walk-in customers by 15% within the next three months.” Clear goals provide direction and allow you to track your progress.
Compelling Content
Content is at the heart of modern marketing. Your content should not only promote your services but also provide value to your audience. Consider creating blog posts or videos that offer beauty tips, haircare advice, or makeup tutorials. This content not only demonstrates your expertise but also engages your audience and keeps them coming back for more.
Leveraging Social Media
Utilise popular social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to showcase your work, run contests, and engage with your audience. Consistency is key to building a strong online presence. Regularly update your social media profiles with high-quality images and videos of your salon’s work and engage with your followers by responding to comments and messages promptly.
Collaborating with Local Influencers
Partner with local influencers. They can help promote your salon and services to their followers, increasing your reach. Influencer marketing can provide your salon with exposure to a wider audience. Look for local influencers who align with your brand and values and collaborate with them for sponsored posts, reviews, or even hosting events at your salon. Their endorsement can build trust among their followers.

Education Station The NHBF return this month to discuss their response to the government’s proposed licensing of non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
NHBF: Campaigning for the Hair & Beauty Industry
The NHBF is an organisation that supports businesses in the hair and beauty sector. It aims to amplify the voices of its Members on critical issues that affect their businesses, such as the cost of doing business, skills development, and regulatory matters. The NHBF not only advocates for its Members but also promotes awareness of important industry matters that can help its Members succeed. It provides valuable information and resources on topics like employment law, mental wellbeing, inclusivity, and sustainability to empower its members. The NHBF have brought to light several critical concerns for the government’s consideration. The NHBF suggest a significant effort to address various concerns and uncertainties related to the proposed licensing of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, emphasising the importance of a well-informed and balanced regulatory framework.
Creating a Fair Environment:
The NHBF emphasised the need for a level playing field in the industry, expressing concerns that the proposed measures might create an imbalance between the beauty and medical sectors. They underscored the potential risk to the beauty sector’s recovery, highlighting how certain options within the consultation document could impede access to aesthetics through the beauty sector and disrupt the pathways for entry and progression.
Clarifying Categories and Definitions:
The NHBF called upon the government to conduct further work in categorising the procedures subject to licensing and
28

defining the term ‘medical oversight.’ This clarifying step would help ensure a more coherent regulatory framework.
Recognising Sector Definitions:
The NHBF urged the government to conduct a comprehensive survey to understand the extent of aesthetic treatments performed in both medical and non-medical settings. They also emphasised the need to update SIC/ SOC classification codes to accurately reflect the diversity within the sector.
Public Awareness Campaign:
The NHBF advocated for the launch of a government-backed campaign tied to the new licensing regime. This campaign’s purpose would be to assist

the public in making informed choices by guiding them toward safe, transparent, and competent practitioners and facilities.
Continuing Dialogue:
The NHBF expressed their willingness to engage in ongoing dialogue with the government to share their expertise. Topics of future discussions would include the practical implementation of the licensing system, ensuring effective enforcement of the framework, shaping a registration scheme, and defining qualifications and training criteria. This collaborative approach would respect and acknowledge existing sector standards, qualifications, and training. Find out more at www.nhbf.co.uk

Making Socials Simple Social Media Expert, Brad Williams, talks us through how salons can utilise TikTok to turn hairdressing trends into educational goldmines.
I
the creators of popular hairdressing trends and propose partnerships to create comprehensive courses. This collaboration not only lends credibility but also ensures that the courses are based on the most up-todate techniques.
n the fast-paced world of hairdressing, staying ahead of the curve is essential for professionals. Social media platforms like TikTok have emerged as a breeding ground for hairstyling trends that captivate the masses. From balayage braids to pumpkin spice hair colour, TikTok is a treasure trove of inspiration. However, for trade customers and fellow hairdressers, there’s more to these viral trends than meets the eye. Converting TikTok hairdressing trends into educational courses is not just an opportunity but a necessity in the ever-evolving beauty industry.
Creating Comprehensive Courses
The TikTok Effect on Hairdressing Trends
TikTok has revolutionised the way trends spread across the world, a 15-second video can turn an obscure hairstyling technique into a viral sensation overnight. The braided balayage trend of this year is a perfect example of this phenomenon. Videos of skilled hairdressers creating stunning, multidimensional looks have gained millions of views and inspired countless clients to request the style. So, how can professional hairdressers leverage these trends?
Identifying Trends with Potential
The first step in converting TikTok hairdressing trends into educational courses is to identify which trends have the potential to become more than just a viral sensation. Look for trends that are versatile, can be customised, and have a broad appeal. The braided balayage trend, for instance, combines the
30

artistry of balayage with the creativity of braiding, making it a prime candidate for educational content.
Collaboration with Influencers
Many TikTok trends are popularised by influencers who are often experts in their niche. Collaborating with these influencers can be a game-changer for educational purposes. Reach out to
@thesalonmaguk

Once you’ve identified a trend with secured collaboration, it’s time to create a comprehensive course. The course should cover everything from the basics to advanced techniques. For the braided balayage trend, this would mean starting with the fundamentals of balayage and braiding, and then progressing to variations of the technique, such as the use of the braided balayage technique with vivid colour. Include video tutorials, written materials, and even live demonstrations to cater to different learning styles. In conclusion, TikTok is a goldmine of hairdressing trends waiting to be transformed into educational opportunities. The braided balayage trend and others like it are not just passing fads but valuable assets for the industry. By identifying, collaborating, and creating comprehensive courses, hairdressers can ensure that they remain at the forefront of their field while providing trade customers with the skills they need to succeed in the ever-evolving world of hairstyling. Embrace the TikTok effect, and turn it into a win-win for both educators and learners in the hairdressing industry. www.simplyhair.co.uk

Christmas Creations In an exclusive editorial with Pure Nails VIP, Michaela Phillips, we explore festive nail styles to increase bookings and showcase your creativity this winter.
Baubles
My favourite part of Christmas has always been decorating the tree. So, this definitely inspired me to create something timeless, yet simple. The reflective glitter elevates this set and you can use all the colours from the Pure Nails ‘Sparkle Season’ collection to complete this look. Use a dotting tool to create the baubles and some black gel for the top of the decoration to add more intricate detail.
Candy Cane Surprise
This is my favourite design I’ve created because I love the swirl detailing of the candy cane pattern. I decided to add an extra layer using Halo Gel Polish in the shade ‘Vibes’ to create a peppermint candy cane feel. This addition helped the design pop with a traditional Christmas vibe. To create the swirling effect, I used a fine liner brush.

I used most of the Pure Nails ‘Sparkle Season’ collection, as all the colours complement each other to create a striking look. When painting on the lines, start at the free edge and release the pressure of the brush stroke where you want the line to end. This assures that you won’t get a harsh and blunt line. @thesalonmaguk

MANAGEMENT
Best Boss Ever Status In this extensive feature, we investigate the management skills required to effectively run your salon business and take it to new heights.
A
great manager requires a range of essential characteristics and skills, such as leadership, empathy, adaptability, delegation and excellent communication skills. A deep passion for the industry is also vital to ensure a motivated and encouraging working environment for the entire team. We have experts on hand to explain from their own experience in salon management and the vital qualities that create a successful salon boss. Ria Kulik, Manager of The HairBank, emphasised the importance of personal reflection to elevate your managerial skillset: “What is most important is
36
thesalonmagazine.co.uk
recognising your own strengths and weaknesses and building on what skillset you have.” She also explained that delegating your work load from time to time is an effective skill: “You are not superman, now and again you will have to take a back seat and that’s ok!” Your salon wouldn’t run without your team, so an essential characteristic as a manager is treating everyone equally and spending time understanding individuals. Kamila Pruszek, Co-Owner at Blue Tit Portobello, sees that, in order to be a great manager, you have to foster progression. She said: “Remember that people are different, and some require slightly different approaches. However,
@thesalonmaguk
Salon Magazine
what is important is that you guide everyone in a way that is beneficial for their growth.” Targets are an effective technique to navigate a large workload as a manager, and make it easier to digest. Brian Leo McCallum, Owner of Roar Hair and Beauty, agreed with this notion and said: “Having a business plan and concrete goals that you want to achieve will help your salon run more smoothly. Also, having goals allows you to provide your team with clear guidance of how you are going to achieve success in the salon, and how they can help.” Often, salon stylists or beauticians take the leap to management. Ria advised
MANAGEMENT focusing on building a strong team around you for an effective support system; and said: “Asking the team’s opinion daily matters, this is a great way to make people feel valued and heard.” Even though you have gained more responsibility and gone up in terms of hierarchy, it’s still important to embrace and encourage feedback for the overall salon business to grow. The transition to management can be overwhelming, and feeling that way is normal. For Kamila, the best way to deal with this is to be accepting of your mistakes. She said: “Stay happy, because by being happy you can create a positive team. In tough situations, try to step back and see things differently.” Skin Loft is a specialist salon in the heart of London, renowned for professional grade treatments. Their Founder, Daiva Kamysova, advised new managers to remember the importance of entrustment and recognising your team’s capability, and said: “It’s essential for salon owners to remember that they have a team of capable professionals who are there to support the salon’s success. By delegating and allowing team members to take on responsibilities, you not only ease the burden on yourself, but also empower your staff to contribute to the salon’s growth and efficiency.” By empowering the potential of team work, you are helping build a thriving salon business. Working in a busy salon environment is always demanding, and levelling up to a managerial role can be a hard task. But, the rewarding sense that exists in the hair and beauty industry only gets intensified with additional influence as a manager. With that in mind, Salon Owner, Santiago Figueroa, recommends practicing gratefulness and setting goals. He said: “There isn’t a day that I don’t love my job: being in a position where I can influence change is so rewarding. My biggest piece of advice would be having a clear goal and vision, making sure that any changes are positive and true to your beliefs!” Client reviews and overall happiness are the beating heart of a salon business: this is why, as a manager, one of the hardest tasks is dealing with customer complaints. At Skin Loft, the key pillar of responding to customer complaints is to handle the situation with care and professionalism, showing the customer
that you are genuinely listening, and asking questions to gather more information about their concern. Daiva highlighted the importance of learning from complaints for business growth. She said: “If the issue arises due to a recurring problem, consider making necessary changes to prevent similar incidents in the future. Keep records of the interaction, including what the customer’s concerns were and how the issue was resolved. This documentation can be valuable for future reference and staff training. Remember that the goal is to turn an unhappy customer into a satisfied one and retain their business.” It’s important to address any hostile situations with customers in a calm manner. Alex Thaddeus, Owner of Alex Thaddeus Hairdressing, explained how all complaints have to be met with professionalism: “It is so important that customers are leaving happy, and that their issue is resolved. You never know who they are, or how many people they Salon Magazine
will talk to regarding their experience.” At the same time, it’s important to trust your team are well trained, as in some instances the customer can be difficult. In a fast-paced salon environment, it can feel as if there aren’t enough hours in the day. As a salon manager, you’ll find yourself spinning several plates and, to manage this, it’s crucial you learn the best way to take care of your workload to effectively grow your business. Kamila explained that in her management role, admin is the biggest issue. To combat this, she decided to drop one day a week in the salon and work on admin in a more suited environment. She said: “Being constantly at the salon with a busy schedule makes it impossible to focus on essential tasks. Work out the best days to take off from serving clients and to focus on admin. Don’t feel bad about it, as it’s crucial for the salon’s growth! Having everything up to date will give you peace of mind, which is priceless.”
@thesalonmaguk thesalonmagazine.co.uk

MANAGEMENT
New salon technology is a great way to ease the load of admin and spend more time building relationships with your team. Daiva recommended online booking platforms and shared cloudbased storage: “Personally, these are our two key technological recommendations for enhancing time management and efficiency in a salon environment.” Santiago thanks technology for helping him run his business efficiently. The salon uses Treatwell Business, which helps manage bookings and protect clients data. Santiago told us how the innovative software has also helped grow their client base: “Since opening my business, we have got over 2000 new clients from its marketplace. This has been a crucial part to our business growth.” Remember, the key to being a successful manager is seeking advice when necessary and recognising that you can’t do it all. Hire a gifted team with thorough training to ensure confident delegation. Every day is different, so it’s important that you are adaptable to deal with a range of situations and can use leadership skills to motivate your team. But most importantly, fill your salon with passion and enjoy leading a team of talented creatives!

Five Minutes With… Business Expert, Liz Mckeon, shares simple, easy to implement strategies to increase your efficiency and therefore, your teams output.
Top tips to increase your productivity as a business owner: Daily To-Do List
Place an up arrow next to tasks that require more energy and focus, and a down arrow beside the tasks that are more mindless. Note how long you expect each item to take. If you are sharper in the morning, that’s when you attend to the tasks that have the up arrow next to them. If you stick to your allocated times, you can easily pinpoint quick items to slot into new ten or fifteen minute time slots.
Turn Off Notifications
Those endless buzzes, dings and alerts might seem inconsequential, but they can quickly throw your day off track. If technology distractions are holding you back from peak productivity, then give yourself some focused work time by turning off your notifications, even for a couple of hours. We live in this call and respond era, and we assume people must have a response immediately, but guess what? They will wait to hear back from you.
Learn to Delegate
One of the biggest challenges all small business owners have is accepting that you cannot do it all. You have a long list of responsibilities, but you don’t have to do it all. If tasks start to pile up, decide which ones must be done by you and delegate tasks that can be passed to someone else.
Stop Multi-Tasking
Scientific research has demonstrated that multi-tasking is actually switching
40
thesalonmagazine.co.uk
rapidly between tasks and that it costs us time and energy each time we switch. Instead of doing two or more things at once, tackle your to do list one item at a time and don’t move on until an item is completed.
Take Breaks
Studies continually show that taking breaks can increase productivity. Breaks are good for your physical and mental health and can help re-energise you for the task at hand. The exception being when you’re in a ‘flow’ – a state of effortless productivity – keep going, it’s best not to interrupt yourself. Otherwise, go for a walk, have a coffee, water the plants and then come back refreshed.

Create a Healthy Work Environment
A positive work environment contributes to productivity in multiple ways, all of which contribute to increased productivity. When salon team members are happy, they are more likely to think creatively, leading to very satisfied clients. As a salon owner there are always going to be lots of demands on your time and energy. You want to be more efficient and effective, but you probably don’t have spare time to master new work approaches or software platforms that promise to save you time. These simple strategies will help you prioritise and focus on the right tasks, without requiring a huge investment in time. Give them a try.

Revive Your Hands Skin on our hands ages at the same rate as the face, but the ageing process is different and requires a combination of professional treatment and an at-home routine to maintain and expand these results. We find out more about Zemits’ new Laser Hand Rejuvenation Treatment, designed to respond to client demands for a healthier looking hand complexion.
C
lients are searching for a treatment that benefits the appearance of their hand complexion. The leading causes of hand photo ageing are epidermal changes, such as actinic keratosis, fine wrinkles, and crepe-like textural changes and lentigines. Hands, like the face, are the body parts exposed all year round, so the dermis layer and subcutaneous fat thinning occur due to ultraviolet light exposure and intrinsic ageing. This can lead to a skeletal-like appearance of the hands and prominent veins. In the dermis, the quality and quantity of collagen and elastin diminishes, and the capacity for regeneration declines. With its attendant bruising, capillary fragility is also expected and primarily caused by UV light damage to the capillary walls. However, unlike the face, the hand has relatively few sebaceous glands, eccrine glands, and hair follicles. This fact is essential in planning a series of peels and different laser treatments because the hands have less capacity to replace the epidermis so pigment alterations may develop during the healing process. Although laser rejuvenation shows excellent results in treating lentigines
(liver spots), it is vital to use a wavelength that targets the appropriate skin chromophore for treatment to be effective and to avoid unwanted and adverse effects. A broad spectrum of wavelengths, such as triple waves laser, can be used because melanin has a wide absorbance range.
The Benefits of NonInvasive Treatments
Non-invasive treatments such as triple-wave laser therapy have shown great preventative results for hand rejuvenation. Unlike invasive procedures, the Zemits laser hand rejuvenation protocol requires minimal downtime. Clients can typically resume their daily activities shortly after the treatment, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles. of vascular and bony prominences can be achieved with laser treatment. It triggers an increased collagen production, resulting in a smoother, firmer and more even skin tone, as well as reversing the visible signs of ageing. THE PARTY EDIT
Taking On Trends As we waltz into party season, with help from industry experts, we look at how your salon can discover the hottest trends to increase bookings and showcase your talent.
S
ocial media means that clients are more informed on the latest styles than ever before and will come to the salon with specific trends in mind: so, to stay up-to-date and increase client retention, it’s vital that your salon understands how to discover new trends and has a good structure in place to discuss whether certain styles are a worthwhile investment to implement and train. Christopher Laird, Brand Ambassador for Remi Cachet, and Salon Owner, told us how trends are vital to his business: “For November Collective, as a trendled salon, it’s a conversation that we have with our clients daily. As a team, we discuss upcoming trends, what we are seeing and loving at the time and how we can relay that back to our clients.” At Blue Tit salon, Hair Educator, Mads Ruus, agreed that trends are a regular conversation with clients, and that it’s an important discussion. He also explained how you can elevate the latest styles by using your expertise to alter them to suit each client: “I think we need to talk about what’s trending at the time to suggest the best styles to our clients. I find that we can always adapt what’s trendy to any of our clients by tweaking and personalising the hair to the individual.” Although not all clients will be curious about the latest trends, it’s important that your salon is always knowledgeable in order to provide guidance for everyone, based on their unique preferences and needs. Daiva Kamysova, Founder of Skin Loft, agreed with this notion and said: “Many clients are curious about the latest beauty trends, but it varies depending on the individual. Some clients are very interested in staying up-to-date with the latest trends and frequently ask for advice or information about them. Others may not be as focused on trends and prefer more classic or timeless beauty treatments.” If a client walks into your salon asking

THE PARTY EDIT for the latest cut and colour sported by models on a recent runway, to maintain professional in your role, it’s important that your team has heard of this trending style and that they understand how to recreate it. Consumer trends come and go fast, so you have to understand how to find and educate your salon on the latest styles. Your search will vary dependent on your experience and status within the industry. For Neil Moodie, Founder of Neil Moodie Studio, their inspiration comes straight from the runway, thanks to their industry presence and recognised expertise within the hair scene. “We tend to be inspired by the latest fashion shows and red-carpet events because some of us work on them, so we are often helping to create the trends too. As a team, we will discuss what we’re inspired by. Also, by doing our own shoots, we try to create trends as well as follow them,” Neil said. As a creative professional, trends are something your team can be motivated by. Christopher suggested keeping education a continuous conversation: “If we see something we love on TikTok or Instagram, we usually have it recreated within a few days. I get so excited about trying new things, so this is something my team have definitely adopted from me.” With the salon located in the bustling city of London, Mads told us how their team find the latest trends by exploring their surroundings: “We are always training our staff on the newest trends, and I think it’s important to do so. It’s a massive bonus that we are located across the coolest and trendiest areas of London, which makes walking down the street inspiring.” For other salons, several strategies are employed to find and educate their team on the latest trends. Daiva explained the structure Skin Loft has adopted to keep up with the everevolving beauty industry: “This includes attending industry events, workshops and training sessions where the team can learn about the latest trends, techniques and products. We also regularly read industry publications and online blogs to keep up with emerging trends, products and technologies. This helps us identify what’s gaining popularity and what clients might be interested in. We maintain strong connections
with professionals in the beauty and skincare industry; this network provides opportunities for knowledge sharing and staying informed about emerging trends. We value the feedback and preferences of our clients, as they often share what they’ve seen or heard about in the beauty industry, which can help us gauge their interest in certain trends.” Pre – is a new multi-service premium salon, and their Founder, Mimi GastonKennedy, sources trends from social media, the latest runways or via celebrity promotions. For the up-and-coming salon, keeping up with the latest trends is important in order to stay relevant in a Salon Magazine
competitive market. “Beauty technology is constantly evolving, and we want to make sure we are providing our clients with the best possible treatments. That’s what makes the beauty industry so exciting. We are always on the hunt for the best formulas and technology. Facials are no longer a deep cleanse, but rather a truly transformative skin experience,” Mimi added. Including the latest trends keeps your client base interested and proves you are always elevating your services. Adopting new styles showcases your knowledge and expertise: you can personalise the

trends and excite clients by creating an altered version to suit them. As a team of creative professionals, Neil highlighted the positive impact introducing new trends also has on himself and his colleagues: “For the team, it’s also important as it keeps them motivated and excited, not only the younger members, but the older ones too.” To stand out and attract a loyal client base in a highly competitive industry, your salon has to evolve to include services that are at the forefront of consumer demands. However, Daiva emphasised the importance of maintaining a balance between incorporating the latest trends and providing comfort to clients. She said: “Many clients value the familiarity of traditional services. An effective approach is to offer a blend of modern and classic treatments, to cater to a wide range of client preferences. This way, clients can enjoy the comfort of familiar services, while also having the option to try the latest trends, creating a well-rounded salon experience that keeps clients engaged and satisfied.” Although introducing new trends

boosts team morale, excites clients and helps your salon to stand out, it’s important to make a business decision as to whether the trend is a beneficial investment in terms of profit, factoring in the time to train your team and the cost of the product and equipment. Neil acts strategically with a skilled business mind to help his salon decide on whether trends are a worthwhile investment. He explained: “After giving out trend advice to clients, we wait to see how many clients bite on those trends and, if it looks like they are proving popular, then we start to promote more on our social media channels. We tease the trends on our channels anyway, but it’s about analysing how the engagement goes.” Whilst investing in trends is necessary to a certain extent, Mads told us how Blue Tit put emphasis on maintaining their unique brand personality in their salon work. He said: “I think it’s important that we don’t just jump on the bandwagon in the age of social media we are seeing so many people doing the same things. The question we always have to ask ourselves is: ‘how can we elevate this and make something our

clients notice and choose us over other salons’.” Before introducing a trend at Skin Loft, the initial consideration is always if it aligns with their core philosophy and values. After confirming this alignment, Daiva explained the importance of thorough thought into the lifetime of the trend: “We consider whether the trend is a short-lived fad or something with long-term potential. Investing in longlasting trends is often more prudent. It’s often a balancing act between meeting client demands, staying true to Skin Loft salon’s values and ensuring that the investment is financially sound.” Ultimately, with a new year comes new trends. Make sure to stay on top of consumer demands to stay relevant in a competitive market. To elevate your services, encourage your staff to get in touch with their creative side and adapt the latest trends to specifically suit the desired client. Finally, before spending precious salon time training your staff and revenue on new products for trends, use your knowledge on the industry and client feedback to decide whether introducing the new style is a beneficial investment.

CREATE THIS STYLE
Ready, Set, Party! With party season upon us, Session Stylist, Joana Neves, shares a step-by-step to create this eye-catching, yet low maintenance rope braid.
T
he rope braid is a versatile style that will suit all clients and a variety of looks. Although appearing very simple, the use of the ‘rope’ technique within the ponytail and the addition of a beautiful accessory, be it gold or perhaps something sparkly, this partnership of the two is fantastic and works incredibly well. The style can be adapted to suit the overall look, whether this be much more structured or something much more relaxed. Joana’s career in the hair industry began with Carlos Gagos, where he fed her creativity and energy leading her to strive for more. Following that, Joana started entering competitions such as the OMC and Trend Vision, not only allowing her to develop her skills but also winning gold medals and awards. Joana then headed to London, joining Neil Moodie’s team, then James Pecis team, and then working with one of the greats of the session industry, Sam Mcknight. Working in Milan, Paris, New York and London on runway, shows and campaigns. Now Joana is a session stylist in Guido’s team as well as Editorial Director for ALTERNA. Joana became part of the ALTERNA team working on educational sessions, product launches and photographic shoots for the renowned brand. “I believe education is so important. I have never stopped learning throughout my entire career. Working with ALTERNA has given me a platform to share my ideas and skills, they have

We managed to educate throughout the pandemic with Instagram Live sessions called Creative Corner and they got better and better with each one we did. We used the technology available to share ideas with our global audience,” Joana said.

What’s next for Joana? “Education is my passion and I’d love to translate my experience in the session world to a course for other hairdressers to attend. It’s important to understand salon work to enable you to do session work and I think it’s an area lots of hairdressers are interested in,” Joana added.

A smooth and clean base is important and keeping the hair smooth without any bumps or flyaways is important too. Working to a centre parting, use a small hair slide to secure the hair on both sides above the ear. Lightly spray the ALTERNA Caviar Anti-Aging Working Hair Spray evenly across the roots and top section of the hair.
Brush out the hair and secure the lower sections behind the ear with hair slides. Gather the hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with a hair thread. Cut any remaining ends of the hair thread.
Place a circular gold hair clip around the hair thread to create a unique finish. Next, separate the ponytail into two sections, securing at the ends with clear hair bands.

Step five
Step six
It’s time to rope braid. Take each separate section of your ponytail and braid them over one another to create your simple, yet flawless braid.
Once braided, leave a small 2/3cm end section at the bottom of the braid. Secure the style with a clear hair band.
To create the relaxed feel, slightly loosen your rope braid at the crossover sections, to add texture and a little volume. Lightly spray the braid with ALTERNA Caviar Anti-Aging Working Hairspray to secure the style. Finish the look with a small gold hair clip.

TRENDING OR ENDING
Spice Inspired Hair Colour expert and OSMO Ambassador, Jake Nugent, talks us through the trending spice inspired hair, and whether training and products to deliver this style are a worthwhile investment or whether this is a trend that is likely to end.
Please tell us about the Spice Inspired Hair Trend.
We know that hair colour tends to get warmer in the cooler months, so the spiced hair trend is a play on creating warmth in your clients’ hair. I’ve pulled together five spiced hair trends that can work on brunette, blondes and red heads. The styles can be adapted to your clients’ skin tones, work/life requirements and maintenance needs.
How can stylists create this trend and what products do they need? Colourists will have the spice colour portfolio in their colour range; you can then decide on the names you want to create and then look to promote them to your clientele. This can either be on social platforms, or look books can be created in the salon to show during consultations. It’s more about how you’re going to market the colour trend to your customers.
What client would opt for this style? This is a very flexible trend, as you can adapt the spice around your client. As with any colour, the consultation is key,
so you understand what your client is thinking, how they’ll maintain at home and repeat visits to the salon too.
Is this style seasonal, or a look for all-year-round?
Although it’s ideal for the cosy winter months, as with most trends, you can certainly adapt it for all seasons. As colourists, we love to experiment and tweak colours – so, as with any trend, the Spice Trend is adaptable all year round.
Ultimately, in your opinion, is this style worth introducing?
Most definitely – it’s not so much about training, but encouraging your team to understand colour trends and seasonal changes. It’s fun to come up with names for trends, and this helps to create marketing noise on your socials, newsletters and in the salon. Have fun and let your creativity as a colourist flow!
For this season’s Spiced Trends, I’ve opted for these names to promote the looks: Ravishing Chilli Tones:
This year I think we’ll see a shift towards more rich, vibrant shades. Think deep chilli, fiery paprika and bright cayenne pepper shades.
Cayenne Colours:
Copper hair was a huge hit last year and I’d love to see it make a return.
60
thesalonmagazine.co.uk
Cinnamon Highlights:
This trend is all about subtle, naturallooking highlights that add a touch of brightness.
Salt & Pepper Blondes:
This season it’s all about the icy blonde and silver. This trend works particularly well for those with cool skin tones.
@thesalonmaguk

Glossy Nutmeg Browns:
Warm brown hair is always a classic, but this time we’re seeing a trend towards richer, darker shades with depth. Think Cloves, Cocoa Powder, Nutmeg and Cardamon.

Stephanie explained how The Mini Space’s design was inspired by her vibrant personality and creative spirit: “The inspiration came from working in a small space but with a chaotic mind, for example, I love colours and skulls, and I like to make a statement, so I replicated this in the salon and let my mind flow throughout.” As we delved deeper into Stephanie’s world, it became evident that her salon, is a true reflection of her unique

personality and passion. She takes great pride infusing her own personality into the space, evident in the prominent skull adorning the salon’s walls—a motif that also finds a place in her personal tattoos. But Stephanie’s creativity doesn’t stop at the salon’s aesthetics; it extends to holistic wellness as well. Crystal healing, a practice close to her heart, finds its place within the salon’s ambiance. These crystals not only add a touch of mystique, but also contribute to the positive energy and tranquillity that clients experience during their visits. To provide a memorable experience
SIMPLYSALON for her guests, The Mini Space goes beyond the realm of hairdressing. Understanding the importance of small touches, such as offering refreshments, from prosecco to a variety of teas, coffees, and even cold beverages, clients are treated to a range of options to sip on while they indulge in their salon journey. For clients who want an outdoor break during their appointment, The Mini Space offers a tranquil space with an outdoor swing to relish in the nearby sunset. It’s a place where her clients can not only leave with gorgeous hair but also a sense of rejuvenation and tranquillity, all under the watchful eye of the skull that symbolises her unique artistic vision.
SimplyHair Elevating the Salon Experience
Stephanie uses SimplyHair’s range throughout the salon and praises the brand as a huge contribution to her client’s satisfaction. She spoke highly of SimplyHair’s quality foils, which have significantly improved her efficiency. Stephanie explained: “The quality of the foils makes working much more effective as you can just pop them out of the box pre-cut and they are ready to go. The foils are so sturdy, they don’t slip on the hair, which can happen with traditional foils, so you can really anchor
in that baby light and create that perfect blend.”
SimplyHair on Instagram: Aesthetic Pleasure Social media plays a pivotal role in the beauty industry, and Stephanie has integrated SimplyHair products seamlessly into her content. She enthused: “I love featuring the range in my content; the products are so aesthetically pleasing, and clients love to know what’s going on in the salon, especially when you are weaving and bleaching, and having aesthetic foils really enhances the vibe.”
Tips for Aspiring Salon Owners
renting a chair to having their own salon space, Stephanie had some valuable advice to share. She emphasised the importance of being fully booked for a six to eight week period to ensure financial stability before taking the leap. The Mini Space is not just a salon; it’s an embodiment of Stephanie’s passion, creativity, and dedication to providing her clients with a one-of-a-kind experience. With SimplyHair products enhancing her craft, where clients can truly feel like celebrities. Salon Owner Testimonial – Vanessa Fernandez, The Dolls London The EXILIS is amazing for skin tightening, we get unbelievable results. We’ve done a lot of nonsurgical treatments and our clients are really happy with the results they’ve received. I love the fact that the technology in the EXILIS machine is very versatile, meaning that we are able to combine the machine with other devices we already have in the clinic. By using BTL equipment we find that our clients are happier with the service and therefore come back. They return because once they’ve had great results from one device, they’re more likely to trust all the other treatments we have on offer in the clinic. weekly basis. Each treatment of a specific body part usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes. This can vary depending on the treated area, treated indication, and other factors.
What does the treatment feel like for clients, is it painful?
No, the treatment should not be painful. The EXILIS provides the most advanced non-surgical solution, treating your face and body parts safely, and efficiently. Most patients describe the sensation of the therapy as being comparable to that of a hot stone massage. The treatment is performed in a lying position, so your clients can easily relax during the procedure.
Are there any side effects?
The whole EXILIS procedure is noninvasive and requires no recovery time. You can easily complete the treatment during a client’s lunch break and they can return to their daily activities immediately.
How quickly do clients see results? This very much depends on the treated
area, its condition and other factors. You may see visible improvements after a single session. Results will typically improve over a three month follow up period.
Will I need to advise clients to change their lifestyle or follow a defined diet? Your client will not be required to exercise or alter their dietary habits. However, the treatment results can give your clients a head start to a better looking body. Many patients feel motivated to take care of themselves better when the procedure is over.

Who Are BluSky Brands? Although still comparatively ‘New Kids on The Block’, BluSky Brands have a great following and client base through their products, education and ethos. In this exclusive editorial, Founder, Tony Cripps, discusses how with more companies making products available online and in stores, it is now, more important than ever to have boutique brands like BluSky, committing themselves to our industry.
B
lueSky truly are a salon professional exclusive company and pride themselves on that fact. As I celebrate 40 years in the industry this month, I have seen many changes, but throughout my career I have always stuck to the Salon Exclusive philosophy. With more and more companies making products, it is now more important than ever to have brands like BluSky, committing themselves to our industry. BluSky Brands was initially formed in the UK, for our own brand, Mane Tribe, developed by myself and my Business Associate, Sean Cassar. We set out to create a brand that was ecologically conscious, affordable to salons and, more importantly, to clients. The other main direction, for BluSky is as Difiaba’s exclusive brand partner for the UK and Ireland, Difiaba are themselves one of the newer Italian colour houses, but already have a household name in Charcolite Bleach. The first thing BluSky did as a company was to create a great education team and that has helped salons in changing

brands, creative and artistic skills and increasing their retail sales. I know just how important education is, which is why we have a very strong education team at the forefront of what we do as a company. This was greatly enhanced earlier this year when Leanne Lea joined the BluSky team as Creative Director. The response from her education style has been warmly welcomed by the team and clients alike. With the large number of independent stylists working within salons, home salons and even both, the industry is changing dramatically and this group along with traditional salons and stylists still want to maintain high standards, learn the latest techniques, and often need some business and marketing help and pointers. BluSky Brands are fully inclusive and supportive of all stylists and have something to cover all requirements. We love helping salons increase their retail through our training programs and stylist-based marketing materials. Retail is such a beneficial additional revenue stream when implemented in the correct way. BluSky also have some wonderful events coming up next year and a competition for all stylists in the BluSky family. Because BluSky are a family run, boutique brand, with loads of experience in the industry, we understand the successes and hardships that everyone experiences, and we can easily adapt to suit and fit, depending on people’s specific requirements. If I had to sum up what BluSky Brands

is about, firstly you obviously need to have great products, great education, and great service; but for me more importantly it’s about supporting, caring and understanding. BeLong – Be Loved – Be BluSky www.bluskybrands.co.uk Facebook, Instagram, Twitter: @BluSkyBrands
