huan Spa is located at the Langham Huntington, in Pasadena, Southern california. the spa originally opened in 1991, but underwent a complete renovation and reopened in June 2014. the spa’s soothing setting inspires contemplation and introspection as guests embark upon a journey to balance the mind, body and soul.

In chinese, chuan means flowing water. As the source of life, water represents the re-birth and re-balancing of our whole being. Guests begin their chuan Spa journey in our contemplation Lounge, where the element of the day is identified. they then enter through the Moon Gate to the

Guests then indulge in one of our signature holistic treatments designed to restore peace and harmony. the journey to wellness concludes with resting in the Dream room, while enjoying one of our chinese five element teas.

lexandra House Spa opened in September 2007 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Initially we rented the premises, but in 2013 we bought a historic property and renovated it to create a stunning space for people to relax and unwind in.

We’ve carved a niche for the spa in a crowded marketplace by focusing on holistic therapies and offering quietness and space – we purposely do not offer beauty treatments to allow customers to enjoy quiet, restorative treatments to reflect and relax. Similarly, we have chosen to remain relatively small to offer a more personal and friendly service where people feel at home and comfortable – clients often comment that they are made to feel cared for as

an individual and as if they are the only guest.

One of our key aims is to give customers a place to escape to and nurture their minds and bodies; providing an oasis of peace, relaxation and healing. by advising on the benefits of complementary therapies and time out, our team at Alexandra House have helped hundreds of customers prevent and minimise stress and ill-health so they can face the world again.

Tell me about your facilities We have four spacious treatment rooms including a double treatment room, two relaxation rooms with loungers and sofas, a retail therapy room which incorporates a waiting area, two brand

new thermal rooms in the beautiful vaulted cellars opened in May this year, and an outdoor relaxation area complete with calming buddha water features, soothing wind chimes and gently rustling bamboos. the walled gardens provide privacy, with a beautiful pergola welcoming clients into the spa.

Do you have a restaurant or cafe, and what’s on the menu?

Neither, but we do provide freshly made cakes from a local bakery in our packages and we supply lunches from a local deli.

Do you have a signature treatment?

We have a number of signature treatments that have been developed in response to the needs of our clients

and by our therapists. Our most popular signature treatment is the Deep Heat Muscle release back treatment which involves hot stone massage, Swedish massage, hot towels and a cooling gel – it’s heaven for troublesome backs.

Massages are popular with many clients who visit us with muscular problems and for those seeking a relaxing treatment to de-stress.

One of the most popular massages is our advanced massage which incorporates Swedish massage with advanced techniques that work slowly into the deeper layers of the muscles. clients often say it’s the best massage that they have had as it releases tension

at a deeper level. It also protects the therapists as it involves some no-hands techniques and is less demanding on their bodies.

We use eve taylor aromatherapy products for our facials and body treatments – eve taylor Obe was a pioneer of aromatherapy and her products are extremely high quality, natural and very popular with our clients. the company has a similar ethos to Alexandra House, focusing on quality, effectiveness and excellent customer service.

Tell me about your staff We have a team of 13 staff including senior therapists, junior therapists,

apprentices, management, and administration support.

We have a career structure in place to ensure that staff can progress as they develop more skills and experience. the staff are committed to working on the spa’s values and vision by providing genuine care, excellent personal service and first class treatments within a warm, relaxed environment.

Describe your staff motivation and training programmes All staff members are involved in shaping the vision and values of the spa which empowers them and creates a sense of ownership. We hold regular meetings with staff to review performance and give feedback. We also provide on-going training to develop

We prioritise staff wellbeing and minimise the number of daily hours of massage therapists carry out. this not only keeps staff motivated and protected, but maintains the quality of our treatments. training includes nutrition and approaches to healthy wellbeing, plus exercises from a chiropractor. the therapists also train together every month to share techniques, which is invaluable.

My LIFE… Nilam Holmes-Patel, the cEO and co-Founder of High Definition, talks travel and tenacity What’s your background – have you always worked in health and beauty?

I didn’t start in beauty as such, but I did work part-time in a beauty salon whilst I was studying for a degree in International Hotel Management and business Studies at university. I trained on the job after opening my own salon with my sister, developing further when I went to America where I worked with a number of VIP clients on music videos, tV commercials, movies and photo shoots. After coming back to the uK I focussed on being a skin and brow specialist and eventually launched the HD brows brand. Following the success of the company, I concentrated my interest and passion for science led beauty treatments and expanded the range of treatments offered under High Definition.

How do you start your day?

No day or week is the same for me as I work in so many different locations; I could be in any part of the uK or even in another country. but I always try to start my day with a good breakfast and I tend to have something like scrambled eggs with avocado, with a mug of tea.

My husband works in the business so we do end up talking about work over breakfast! I look at my emails as soon as I can, and I always make phone calls on my way to work – I do it then as I know I won’t get chance to do it later.

Do you stop for lunch or graze?

I tend to graze during the day. If I’m with clients I have no set lunchtime, so I try to grab something every few hours. I do always make sure to have a quick bite when I can.

How do you unwind?

I find it hard to switch off as there is always something going on, a client to see or an email to reply to. As I’m rarely ever at home, it’s really nice just being in my own comfy surroundings with my husband and doing very little. We love a great box set.

What do you do on holiday? because I travel long-haul a lot for work I try to avoid long-haul holidays, and prefer to go to Europe. I try and relax as much as possible and spend quality time with my husband. After a few days I do manage to switch off, having no phone signal always helps!

What’s the secret to your success?

Hard work, dedication and sacrifice! I have a clear vision and know where I want the brand to be. I also try to keep up with everything that is happening in the industry so that we can grow and evolve with the market.

What’s the best piece of advice you were ever given? And what advice would you pass on? treat others as you would like to be

Do you have a favourite skincare product or ritual?

I’ve always had problems with my skin so most of my daily regime is around skincare. I use a mild skin ‘peeling’ face wash with salicylic acid in it every morning and night, apply an antiinflammatory antioxidant serum and then a light balancing lotion before applying my make-up. For me one of the most important things about beauty is having the perfect base.

Do you take any vitamins?

Always! I take a multi-vitamin, omega 3, and ginseng for anti-ageing for my body and brain. I recently embarked on an Ayurvedic diet and herb plan, which involves detoxifying and balancing the body through herbal supplements, and I have seen a huge improvement in my skin, energy and general well-being.
