Welcome to the third issue of Welcome to the March issue of Modern Spa Magazine! Here, Spa Director Liz Holmes tells Modern Spa Magazine what makes Rockliffe Hall so special, and how it all began. I started my career with a City and Guilds qualification in hair and beauty in Edinburgh and went on to work for the Steiner group based at the Gleneagles Hotel, where I worked my way up to Salon Manager. Hairdressing was my first passion at that time, although the job also included delivering facials and make-up. In those days, the word ‘spa’ was rarely used. It was always hair and beauty. I then became an industry trainer working for Wella GB, where I delivered their customer service and sales training programmes, and latterly launching treatment and make up lines with them. After a short career break when my daughter was born, I decided to train as a fitness instructor, going on to specialise in Pilates, running a studio within an osteopathic centre. I naturally started to gravitate back into management roles in the health club industry culminating in the Spa Director’s role here at Rockliffe Hall, which brings together my varied areas of expertise.

The brands we offer have evolved over the years and it is important to respond to market demand and marketplace changes. For those reasons, we do regularly review our products to make sure it’s what our customers want, both in the spa and in the Spa Boutique. In the coming year, we will look to update and renew our products. For example, we have recently introduced ORLY into the spa, offering a range of nail treatments as well as their products which customers can buy from the Boutique.

History & Design

Clientele Our clientele is mixed. Spa days are popular with mums and daughters as well as groups of friends and work colleagues. We developed a special ‘Twilight Spa’ package especially for this market as it has become so popular. We also get lots of couples, especially on a weekend. The age range varies enormously but we have seen clients getting younger. We offer a dedicated couples’ massage room as well, and treatments that couples can have together, which are really popular. Our clients visit us for a variety of reasons – celebration, relaxation or recuperation. We also get people here on business using us at the end of a busy day.

Staff Setting the benchmark high has always been my style, whether in my own business or when leading teams in the beauty or fitness arena. If you want to be recognised, you need to be recognisable and this means either doing something genuinely different or doing something that has been done before, better than it has been done before. This is how I motivate my team: • Detailed induction training process to ensure everyone has a good knowledge of the whole business. • Complimentary staff hotel and spa use where they can bring a friend and live a day in the life of a guest. This is as popular as it sounds and ensures real engagement with the resort. • On-going, developmental training programmes. • As well as training, we consult with our staff on treatment experiences and promotional ideas.


The vision was always to create exceptional spa experiences, and this process started with an exceptional design and space. Every area, from the gym to the heat treatment rooms, has been well considered down to small details such as underfloor heating in the changing rooms to avoid wet floors and cold feet taking the edge off the client’s experience. We opened in 2009 and the inspiration came from the history of the hall, particularly the tree theme reflected in sculpture at both the hotel and spa receptions. Alfred Backhouse, the first owner of Rockliffe Hall, was a botanist when this was a popular hobby for wealthy Victorians, and imported tree saplings from South America including the Giant Sequoia which can still be seen growing throughout the grounds. The spa offers 13 spacious treatment rooms, including a double treatment room for couples, a sleep retreat relaxation area with sound wave therapy beds, a fitness studio with varied, daily wellness class programmes including yoga and Pilates, Nordic Walking within the 375 acre estate, a Mud Rasul suite, a salt inhalation suite, a pedicure room complete with pedicure thrones, a manicure room and a 52-piece Technogym and Kinesis suite with a dedicated fitness team.

Marketing Strategies We use a range of methods: - Email marketing to our current members and customers. - PR with regional, national and trade publications. - Attending events. - Marketing around the resort – in-room marketing, posters in changing rooms etc. - New treatment experiences – the creative side is the most fun for my team when we plan new treatment experiences with our brands such as the signature Tibetan Sound Massage. - As well as the holistic, relaxing side, we enjoy creating new ladies’ events such as the ‘Ladies too Busy to Lunch’ dining evening, with a talk and demo from celebrity make-up artist Daniel Sandler on the 28th of March. We know that we need customers to keep returning in order to grow, and also we need those customers to recommend us, so we must constantly excel. That is all part of promoting what we do. The most successful spas have the best reputations. The internet and online marketing gives us great opportunities to promote what we do, but at the heart of everything must always be the creation of exceptional and memorable experiences that engage customers.

Spa Focus of the Month Success & Recognition Rockliffe Hall has filled a niche in the market and we are delighted at how quickly the business has developed in its relatively short, four year history. Our unique spa offer is based on three main factors: working with amazing brands, listening to our customers and finding creative ways to give our customers what they want in a way that adds an element of surprise. 75% of our customers have either been before, or were recommended to come and that means that customer service is a key focus for us. Our management meetings focus primarily on customer feedback and on the rare occasion when something has gone wrong, what we are learning from it and doing about it. We never forget that people can feel a little intimidated coming to the spa for the first time and we need to ensure we create a warm welcome, encouraging a relaxing and comfortable environment. Whether it is a celebration or a chilled out relaxation, we want to ensure that when people leave, they have a really positive memory and want to return. Predictions for 2014 Spas need to create exceptional and memorable experiences that sit well in their marketplace. The market has evolved substantially in the last three years, moving from being beauty focused to wellness, and now onto experiences that offer more: instant pleasure and long term benefits. Success depends on reputation and recommendation and this has never really changed since I entered the business almost 30 years ago. We may have become more sophisticated in marketing terms, but building lasting relationships with our customers must remain a cornerstone of the spa industry.

Equipment A facial machine is a great investment if you’re looking to diversify your treatment menu and offer variation to your clients. If you’re after a machine that offers a more specific treatment, OXYjet may be the ideal choice for your business. OXYjet offers oxygen facial and oxyfusion treatments that give clients a natural alternative to cosmetic botox injections and fillers. Aimee Loves... BeautyLab Peptide Tanning Lotion I added another member to my growing fake tan family this month, and this product is slightly different to what I’d usually use. BeautyLab’s Peptide Tanning Lotion is described as: ‘A deeply hydrating tanning lotion formulated with a tan inducing peptide to provide a golden sun-kissed and streak-free tan. Blended with rainforest cocoa, rose petal, jasmine and passion flower, it has a hint of guava and melon for a delicious aroma. Loved by all skins. Benefits: Natural looking tan, builds up gradually and effectively, streak and orange free, moisturising and skin firming, gorgeous smell.’ BeautyLab is the official tanning partner of Dancing on Ice, so I already knew that I was in for a successful tanning experience. I usually favour a mousse product applied with a mitt to a hand applied lotion, as I find that: 1) I don’t end up with hands that look like they’ve been dipped in furniture wax, and 2) They require less effort to rub in. However I really enjoyed using this product. The consistency is similar to a light moisturiser and therefore it felt very easy to apply. The end result was a natural, streak free colour. I’m naturally very pale and I would need another layer for a deeper tan, but I’ll definitely head for this product if I desire a buildable shade that doesn’t dry out my skin.

Clayspray Brightening White Clay with Ginseng Masque This month I tried the Clayspray Brightening White Clay with Ginseng Masque, cited as a high performance face mask perfect for dull and tired complexions. I was excited to try this as, due to a recent lack of sleep, my complexion is most certainly: 1) Dull, 2) Tired, and to top it off nicely, 3) Covered in a light scattering of spots. To start with, I like that fact that the mask comes in a simple to use can with dispenser. In my experience, clay masks usually equal messy application, but not with this packaging. I found that one pump was enough for one application. Applied to wet skin, this mask went on so easily and smoothly and had a really lovely consistency. After around five minutes the clay started to become incredibly tight on my face, to the point where I couldn’t open my mouth, but no one wanted to talk to me so it was ok. I didn’t find this off putting; if anything, it felt as if it was working more effectively. I washed the mask off after around fifteen minutes with warm water and cotton pads, and was expecting it to be a slight mission. In fact it was the opposite – the product basically melted off when mixed with water – and most importantly, my skin was left glowing and so smooth. I’m not sure if I would have noticed such a big difference if my skin had not felt so dull in the first place, but I was really impressed and I will definitely be making this a regular step in my skincare routine. The Clayspray Brightening White Clay with Ginseng Masque is featured in our Mother’s Day Boutique this month, and I can recommend it as a lovely gift for anyone needing a fast, do-it-yourself skin boost.

Hard floor safety is our passion. Sliptech has over 15 years of ‘hands on’ experience providing materials, treatments, sealants and expertise to aid facilities in floor safety and effective maintenance.

The Problem The flooring within spa properties are predominantly beautiful natural stone tiles which can become slippery when wet, especially if they are not cleaned and maintained correctly. It is well documented that slips and trips are the most common causes of major accidents both at work and in public spaces, costing businesses and local authorities millions of pounds per year in compensation and legal fees.

The Reason The correct maintenance of a pool surround and changing room is essential in providing clients with a clean, sanitary and safe environment. General ‘mop and soapy water’ cleaning of the changing room and pool surround areas tends to move dirt around rather then remove it from the surface. This very quickly leads to a film building up which consists of a combination of detergent residues, body fats and in many cases, calcium. This film is then extremely difficult to remove through general cleaning methods, and will leave the floor looking tired, dirty and, in most cases, slippery. We find that with most centres that we visit with a slip issue, the problem is generally down to surface contamination and poor maintenance.

The Solution We work at a number of the country’s top spa complexes to ensure their floors remain safe whilst still looking fantastic for their clients. With the use of innovative new products and procedures – many designed to a unique specification – we are able to permanently improve the safety and appearance of most types of flooring. We can supply our customers with a full floor report and a certificate to confirm the facility meets health and safety regulations. We offer extensive guarantees on our work and as part of the service, we provide tailored, on-going maintenance advice to ensure floors are kept at their best in terms of both aesthetics and safety.

The Application Our standard procedure is to arrange a site visit to carry out slip resistance testing. Tests are conducted in “as found” conditions and then repeated following a number of cleaning tests to identify the various contaminants present. A full report will be produced outlining the current safety conditions, any steps required to resolve issues and the options available to rectify any problems. In some cases the slip issues are down to poor specification of tile and therefore an anti-slip treatment is required. Our process would be for our expert professional cleaning team to visit site and carry out a deep clean procedure aim to leave the flooring in an ‘as new’ condition before applying an anti-slip treatment if necessary. We also offer an out of hours service so as to not interrupt the day to day running of the facility.

The Future On completion we issue cleaning guidelines to maintain the floor for both aesthetic and safety purposes. We also offer staff training to ensure that correct cleaning procedures are followed and offer a specialist range of cleaning products that are specifically designed to tackle these issues in an efficient and cost effective way.

SS14 TRENDS NAILED MANICURE/PEDICURE LAUNCHES Manicures and pedicures are essential services on a spa treatment menu. Although only opening in March 2013, NIZUC Resort & Spa is on its way to becoming one of the most stunning and sought after accommodation and relaxation spots in Mexico. Located at the gateway of the Riviera Maya, the resort is positioned in Punta Nizuc – a secluded enclave situated on the desirable land of the Mayan region that faces the sands of the world’s second largest coral reef. However the resort is stylish, elegant and luxurious in every other way too, with the 30,000 square foot spa being one of the main highlights. “The spa is right in the core of NIZUC Resort & Spa and was conceived to be functional, peaceful and pleasant for the guests who will be enjoying the time they spend there,” explains NIZUC’s PR Manager, María Oliveira. “The spa was designed by ESPA leaders in the spa industry and the recognised Mexican architect, Alejandro Escudero.” The spa is a combination of indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, quiet meditation gardens and reflection pools, and combines metals, woods, stones, fire and water to engage the senses. Amenities are plentiful and include nine multifunctional treatment rooms, a beauty salon, nail bar and state of the art fitness centre, with additional thermal facilities, such as an ice fountain with cool mist shower, vitality pool and a cold plunge pool.


The spa’s treatment menu is a fusion of European therapies and ancient healing rituals, with its signature treatment being the Mayan inspired NIZUC Renewal. “The NIZUC Renewal Signature Treatment is inspired by the Mayan’s use of healing stones and herbs, and will soothe the mind and cocoon the body in pure relaxation,” explains Oliveira. “The treatment begins with the purification of the skin using natural sea salts and pure Mexican agave. The body is massaged with warm gemstones revered by the Mayan’s for their healing properties and the treatment concludes with a meditative scalp massage.” Although inspired by local Mexican customs, NIZUC is proud to use the products of British company, ESPA, with their range of 99-100% natural products. “As global leaders in spa skincare, ESPA are found in prestigious spas across five continents and are dedicated to producing results-driven, natural skincare,” says Oliveira. “ESPA’s award winning products are as unique as they are effective; they are tested each and every day by a highly trained and extremely professional global network of therapists, and are loved by men and women alike.”

“The architectural concept of the hotel welcomes our visitors; water, wood, beautiful gardening. It is a Mexican contemporary design with lots of details, the best materials and a palette of earth colours that allow the blue of the ocean and the green of the surroundings to be the main actors of the place,” says Oliveira. The design of NIZUC is rustic but elegant, clearly influenced by the ocean, coastline, and natural environment. Impressive grey slate floors and other dark design features are softened with neutral toned furnishings and an abundance of natural wood furniture. The luxurious and indulgent feel of NIZUC also extends to the personal butler service provided and other amenities offered. The resort is home to six gourmet restaurants offering modern Mexican cuisine and Peruvian ceviches along with authentic Asian and Mediterranean dishes, making it one of the region’s premier culinary destinations. In terms of celebrating a wedding, the resort has a variety of ceremony, cocktail and reception areas, with a choice of three types of ceremony. “When it comes to pregnancy, not only is the skin’s sensitivity heightened alongside the potential for increased pigmentation, but the vulnerability of the foetus is also a crucial factor. It is therefore vital to steer clear of strong, active ingredients such as AHAs (any products including lactic acid or glycolic acid), BHAs (anything including salicylic acid), retinols and benzyl peroxide.
