Welcome to the november issue of in.Design magazine!

so now that we’re all back at our desks after a great show season, we welcome back Blanca sanchez, Clare Pascoe, Hugh Jamieson, Ros Wilson and nico Yiannikkou from september’s preview, to discuss what they loved about it, and what they’d like to see changed. My favourite exhibit was at designjunction, where The Vamp had an amazing array of old speakers offering the effect of a wall of sound – i’m working out how i can reproduce this at home!

The BiiD, as expected, had a presence at much of London’s Design Festival, chairing panels, giving keynote speeches and informative talks, and offering support to many exhibitors.

Our two in.Vogue features in this issue look at the importance of a good sofa to set off a living space, and how to use window dressings to change a room. in Week in the Life, Mayfair’s grazyna solland opens her diary to us, and keeping a London theme, in in.Brief, Lindsey Randall talks us through how she gave a small but elegant Maida Vale apartment the impression of a much larger home.

The next exhibition i’m being allowed out of the office for is the sleep event later this month – as i live a long way away from the capital, i always enjoy visiting this, it’s held just as London is getting Christmassy – and it’s not too early to feel excited!

Hope you have a lovely month.

Wide Awake For Sleep! Once again Sleep is attracting the industry names that everyone wants to see and hear! Topping the conference bill at London’s Business Design Centre on 20th and 21st November is entrepreneur Ian Schrager, supported by a host of other hospitality luminaries

O

ne of the most sought after components of the Conference is the Round Tables, a chance for delegates to talk with selected industry influencers and decision makers as they move around the tables. This year’s roll call of hosts includes Robin Sheppard of Bespoke hotels, Felicity Black-Roberts of Starwood hotels & Resorts, Nigel Buchanan of Yotel, Paul Callingham from Starboard hotels, Peter

Tisdale of That Group, Bruce Robertson of South Place hotel, and Invesco’s Lisa Neubueser. And for those seeking a further opportunity to quiz the experts, the conference concludes with ‘Question Time!’ where Anna Goodrich of hyatt, Dexter Moren from DMA, Marriott’s Rajiv Puri and Charles Leon of CLA will be on stage to address questions from the audience.

Meanwhile, the Sleep hotel designers continue to refine and develop their designs for the built-room sets imagining a suite in a hotel originally constructed during the Pop Art era in the 1960s. The winning concept will be revealed at a drinks reception on the first evening of Sleep in the Sleep hotel Bar, the hotspot where the industry’s movers and shakers mix and mingle. “Sleep hotel celebrates innovation in our sector and pushes the hotel industry to remain at the forefront of cutting-edge design,” said Sleep hotel judge Anthony Ingham, VP – Luxury & Design Brands EMEA of Starwood hotels. “Strong, forwardthinking design has never been more important in the hotel business than it is today and this event ensures that both designers and hoteliers continue to push the boundaries to create advancements in design that reflect the changing needs and requirements of today’s travellers.” www.thesleepevent.com

BIID Enjoys A Successful LDF The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) hosted a series of popular talks, conversations and debates across the main events that took place during this year’s London Design Festival

O

n Friday 20th September, the Institute supported this year’s 100% Design with a thoughtprovoking panel discussion, chaired by interiors journalist Kate Burnett. Sue Timney, BIID President, was joined by Giles Miller, Linda MoreySmith and BIID member, Mary Fox Linton. The discussion, entitled ‘Innovation – the Lifeblood of Design’, allowed the panel to share their own creative influences, along with their thoughts on creativity and what it means to be truly innovative in design. The following day Sue Timney was at designjunction as part of another eminent panel including Rodney Fitch, Charles Leon and David Trubridge in a discussion chaired by Aidan Walker which explored the term luxury and its value in today’s world. Deeply contrasting views proved the order of the day with opinion divided on the responsibility of the designer in delivering luxury and its impact on people and the environment at large. On the opening day of Decorex, a BIID members’ breakfast on the Textiles Scotland stand was followed by the keynote talk of the show, entitled ‘The Light Box’, hosted again by Sue Timney. Sue invited the distinguished photographer Andreas von Einsiedel to join her in conversation for an inspirational session which showcased

Andreas’ career through the lens of the amazing interiors he has photographed. The full house was captivated by his story as it touched on themes of creativity, light and the home, the relationship between photographer and designer, and the affinity that exists between fashion and interiors photography.

10 : in.BIID Later that day, the Design Club in Chelsea Harbour played host to the seminar “Luxury Meets Modernism” where BIID member Mary Fox Linton enthralled the audience with insights on her life, style and design inspiration as part of the Focus/13 exhibition. In conversation with deputy editor of Homes & Gardens, Giles Kime, she brought to life the influences which have defined her pioneering style. “As BIID President, it has been a privilege and an honour for the Institute to take

such a prominent role at the signature LDF events,” commented Sue Timney. “We’d like to provide our sincere thanks to all the contributors who played their part in our stimulating series of BIID talks. The week itself has been a huge success enjoyed by thousands and thousands of designers. Our congratulations go to the LDF, and the individual event organisers, for putting on such a great show in the capital. I know that I, and many other designers, are already looking forward to what next year has in store!”

The BIID is the only professional organisation for interior designers which has been granted the prestigious and rare accolade of Institute status by the Minister of State as the pre-eminent body in its field. The Institute’s mission is to encourage and support creativity and competence in the field of interior design through facilitating best practice, practical professional support, development opportunities and education. A Week In The Life Of Grazyna Solland For over 30 years now Grazyna Solland of Solland Ltd. has been designing at the very highest level for royal families and very wealthy clientele in the UK and all over the world, from their Mayfair studio and showroom Monday i arrive around 9am and show the team the new ideas i have dreamt up over the weekend on pieces of paper with my doodles and designs on them. i then talk to my senior architectural technician regarding the possibilities of my new product ideas.

With our workshop in Norfolk constantly being pushed to its limit in terms of what can be done and can be achieved, i call to check on any issues there may be on items in production. i love to push design boundaries and overcome technical difficulties with creative and beautiful solutions. i then find myself trying to find my first ever Pr feature which was in House & Garden in 1979, as i want to show a new client what i designed then. following which i sit down with my secretary to review the week ahead and list matters which must be dealt with, one being my upcoming visit to New York at the end of October. i go through the new information which she needs to upload onto my iPad and also discuss the possibilities of professionally photographing some of the new items of furniture still in production.

Later, i review a couple of queries on

A stunning home in Regents Park

14 : in.Her Life the planning application submitted for a house in regent’s Park’s Outer Circle, which is being fully modernised and refurbished behind its Grade 1 listed exterior. As i will be out of the office tomorrow i stay late to work on emails and other admin i need to deal with personally. Tuesday i flew to Valencia, Spain, to look at some land for development potential for a client. The company has for a number of years been involved with development both in the UK and increasingly overseas. So i meet agents of two plots of land close to the beach which could be of interest. i was shown local authority long term planning proposals and we discussed what would in all likelihood be allowed in terms of development. The agent has agreed to try and get a more definitive response on permitted usage from the local authority. One of these plots could be suitable and i provisionally arrange a return visit for a couple of weeks’ time. i do feel Valencia is lacking in Boutique hotels and luxury seaside apartments. The town itself has some architectural gems including the stunning Ceramic institute. Later in the day, the agent calls me and asks if our client would consider a property which requires refurbishment rather than new build, in a centre of town. Whilst understanding it does not meet my brief, it is apparently something special which i should see. As there is not enough time left i suggest i see it during my next visit and ask for details to be emailed. After a short stroll through the town i caught the last flight back to Gatwick and arrived home at 11:30pm.

Grazyna’s eXPLO table and eLiP chairs Wednesday Back in the Mayfair office, and we are handling an enquiry from an American couple who looked into the showroom over the weekend (while it was closed) and returned just before their flight home to discuss furniture for their New York apartment. i organise images and details of various pieces from our signature furniture collection currently on display in the showroom which they saw and liked, to be emailed for them to consider once back home. These included the eXPLO table and eLiP chairs, the LODe console and mirror and the NU tables, a design i came up with to

address my dislike of ‘nesting’ tables. My NU tables offer complete versatility by being able to group them as the situation requires. At present the 12 individual tables are on display in the showroom in three rows of four, but you could group them in two rows of six or in a free form combination – basically whatever your requirements are. You can remove one or more of the tables to act as side tables for visitors. They presently come in a range of highly lacquered woods including walnut, poplar burr and macassar ebony as well as clear Perspex, but as with all our bespoke furniture they can be made in any wood finish or lacquer colour.

in the afternoon i went to the regent’s Park house to meet our structural engineer. We went into the roof space and onto the roof to review the existing structure and the possibility of creating a new roof terrace. This will require the removal and restructuring of the central section of the roof. The park view from the roof is amazing! Thursday i travel up to Norfolk with our senior architectural technician to our workshop to check on progress on some new pieces in production. My latest design is of a unit with solid silver on the exterior of the drawers and marquetry designs on the interior,

Grazyna’s NU tables each drawer being different inside – all are hand cut and veneered in our workshop. There are some extremely challenging aspects in creating such a piece, but i am sure the final piece will be worth it. We review some sample panels using new finishing products presented to our workshop

manager by a new supplier. We agree they should be left to stand for at least another two/three months before we make any final decision. We have been working on producing a bespoke hinge which we require for our mitred cabinet doors. it has proven to be difficult to find an engineering workshop which will work to the standards

we require, but we finally believe we may have found them. i also need to look at a further work unit which has recently become available for our growing workshop as the team need more space. Various issues, such as health and safety requirements, fire regulations and how best to link the new unit to our existing workshop all have to

20 : in.Her Life be carefully considered. We discuss the possibility of extending and further streamlining the specialist finishing process areas. i speak to all senior members of staff for their view and input. Friday Off to another regent’s Park property but this time an apartment we have recently completed. i pay a visit to see its owner to ask permission to show a new client around. The new client has bought a property in St John’s Wood, wants a very quick turnaround refurbishment. The new client has seen images of the regent’s Park interior and likes our use of bold colours and would like a similar statement for his family home. He also loves the extensive use of wood, and in particular the high gloss lacquered santos rosewood panelling and bespoke furniture, much of which matches the panelling, which together make a luxurious, contemporary warm and elegant home. it would be so useful to show them around the apartment as the images, as good as they are, cannot show the reality that a visit in person can. in the afternoon i work on the latest plans emailed to me of the formal reception areas for a new villa in the Middle east. The client, during their first visit to our showroom last year, very much liked our use of metal decorative elements on our furniture which gives a contemporary edgy feel to the luxurious finish of our furniture. They wanted us to continue this feel throughout the interior. The Week-end My imagination is allowed to run wild with no phone ringing or emails to answer i do what i love to do… design. i even go to bed with a sketchpad!

Sitting Pretty A great sofa is not only a stunning focal point in a sitting room, it’s essential for cosying up in the winter!

“I

f there was such a thing as an investment piece in the living room, then the sofa would definitely tick the box,” stated Neil Partridge, Co-Director at NgI Design. “The seating in a living room is absolutely vital for the enjoyment of the space and it’s essential that it’s not only stylish, but inviting and comfortable.

“Three fashion driven trends currently stand out,” said Stephen gee, Creative Director at Poliform North. “The luxurious Armani or London look featuring naturals such as wood, linen, silk and marble or stone, with a conservative colour palette. Sofas are feather filled for that opulent plump look. For a family living room, colour is more playful

“It warrants a good investment as it needs to be well made to ensure it can offer the longevity that is expected. It’s also worth picking a neutral colour such as a trendy grey shade so that it can coexist with the current and future design schemes. The Italians are masters at creating luxurious sofas that stand the test of time as the shapes are clean and uncomplicated and the materials are beautiful and durable.” You have to consider how you will get any seating into the intended room! “Modular sofas are ideal as they are comprised of individual pieces which can be easily manoeuvred and then fit together,” added Neil. “This also lets you have much more freedom in the design process as you can create an arrangement that works for that specific space and client.” Though personal tastes vary, all clients want their lounge to serve as a hub for relaxing, entertaining and even working.

Parker & Farr’s Boutique Collection

24 : in.Vogue with contrasting walls and more daring choices for rug patterns or fabric coverings for practical sofas. “For the minimalist ‘less is more’, featuring plain white walls and emphasis on beautiful form rather than function with low sofas, lounge chairs, accent tables, and sleek cabinets in ebony or high gloss.” Across the three trends the focal style of the room is set by the design of the sofas and lounge chairs. “Where space permits,” added Stephen, “blockbuster sofas are created using two straight sofas to form an L shape for maximum comfort and function.” The Sofa and Chair Company supply their iconic furniture creations to both residential and commercial properties alike. In both arenas, they have observed a growing trend of clients wishing to express a certain stylistic identity through the furnishings they choose. “Clients after a luxury piece of furniture are no longer looking at a sofa from one company and a dining table from another one,” claimed Julien Sannier, Commercial Director for The Sofa and Chair Company. “They are looking for inspiration; a lifestyle rather than just a piece or two. They want to belong to a look, whether it is minimalist, shabby chic or timeless. Clients in love with our look and feel now wish to follow our recommendations as well. They see the way we present our furniture in our show rooms; with our lamps, rugs, accessories and ornaments, and they want to reproduce a similar look in their homes.”

28 : in.Vogue The frames are made of grade 1 Beech Wood, hand jointed using dowels and dove tail joints, jute webbing and curled horsehair filling the seats, these pieces are made as if they were 200 years old. Built to last and to appeal to those who hark back to the quality of yesterday whilst loving the modern simplicity of their style, they are perfect in an eclectic setting. Max Clements, expert designer at luxury furniture manufacturer Parker & Farr, shares his predictions with us for what to look out for this Autumn and Winter.

Paris Seoul from Poliform

“A lot of this season’s colour trends for sitting rooms have taken inspiration from the glamour of the Parisian catwalks,” he said. “expect to see glowing bronzes, coppers and lively corals, all of this season’s fiery autumnal shades bleeding into the metallic shine of winter, giving a cooler, more contemporary edge to interiors.”

“expect the return of older print techniques,” Max continued. “The improvement in digital technology used for reproducing archive designs is undeniable. Developments allow access to inspirational vintage prints going back to the mid-twentieth century. As a result, we anticipate pieces inspired by such patterns as Willow pattern and Delft china.”

Fifty shades of grey isn’t just a novel! People are really beginning to have fun with all its respective tones, gun metal, silver and charcoal, combined with strong accent colours like orange and deep fuscia, work surprisingly well.

Although the sitting room is comfort-central throughout the year, it’s always as the nights draw in that the cosiness you can create with a great sofa comes in to its own – add a log fire (if at all possible) and a faux-fur throw, and we’re happy to stay in until spring!

Bette Creates The Ultimate Bathroom German bathroom manufacturer Bette creates exclusive, enamelled steel sanitaryware with a 30 year warranty!

A

ll its products are designed to create the ultimate bathroom, with Bette’s enamelled steel providing sustainability, stability and reliability, combined with a flawless, durable and hygienic surface that is easy to clean.

At Sleep, Bette is exhibiting its groundbreaking flush-to-floor shower area, the BetteFloor Side and its latest luxury freestanding bath, the BetteArt, which takes the segment to a new level of design and is a first for enamelled steel baths. The BetteArt’s matching washbasins will also be on show. The award-winning BetteFloor is an enamelled steel, flush to floor shower area that is like one large tile which is permanently water-proof, easy to clean, hygienic and fits perfectly into the floor tiling pattern. With the BetteFloor Side option, it is available with the waste outlet to the side, rather than in the centre. As a continuous surface, without the joints of a tiled area, BetteFloor Side ensures perfect hygiene and ease of care. Bacteria and germs do not have a breeding ground on the inorganic, enamel surface and dirt and residual soap can be washed away easily from the robust BetteGlaze surface. Also on display at Sleep will be the BetteArt bath, which demonstrates how Bette has the design and manufacturing capability to take sanitaryware to a new level. Entirely new in this material, it is a slender, narrow

rimmed freestanding bath in which the exterior follows the interior, creating a bath which is strikingly contemporary, but has a restraint which makes it timeless.

Show Business! With the September show season over, we ask Blanca Sanchez of Halo Design Interiors, Clare Pascoe of Pascoe Interiors, Hugh Jamieson of At Home Interior Design Consultants, Ros Wilson of Roselind Wilson Design and Nico Yiannikkou of Y2DC what most impressed them?

in.Sight : 33 Which shows did you attend, and did you have a favourite? Clare: i went to 100% Design, tent & Super Brands, and Decorex. the three shows were very different; 100% this year showcased some emerging talent which was refreshing, and it was good to meet up with suppliers i work with, whose products i love already. tent & Super Brands (being a twinned exhibition) both showcased new and emerging British talent, alongside larger established firms, which was very refreshing. Decorex was interesting because of its new venue, which was very picturesque. Being split across three marquees made some sense, though the split wasn’t totally logical and as is always the way with Decorex, it was largely filled with the same style of products and exhibitors that have always attended over the years, as such it remains a bit stuck in its ways and is not very forward thinking or inspirational. Blanca: this year, due to a particularly busy

Ros loved Sharon Marston’s installation

work schedule, i only attended Decorex. i earmarked this show in particular due to the change of venue, in the hope of finding new home-grown talent and also reconnecting with some suppliers i haven’t seen in a while to thank them for all their support and great work this past year. i had also hoped to make it to 100% Design and also Maison Objet, but when i realised i wasn’t going to make them, i studied the exhibitor list for 100% Design and contacted a few suppliers which looked interesting; and i’m intending to go to Paris for Maison in January. Ros: the entire Roselind Wilson Design team took a day out of the office to attend various Design Week events! We kicked it off with a team breakfast at the Breakfast Club in Shoreditch. this was followed by a brisk stroll to Brick Lane and a browse around tent. After a general stroll around the Shoreditch Design triangle and a stop in at Lee Broom, we travelled to South Kensington to view the latest collections

Ros Wilson

34 : in.Sight at B&B italia and Mint. We popped into Cassina to assess the collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld and ended up at the V&A to stare in awe under the new lighting installation by Bocci in the Main hall. in addition to this i attended the Linley exhibition, 100% Design and Decorex at the new venue. it’s hard to choose a favourite as there are highlights to each and every exhibition. it also really depends on what you are sourcing for your projects at the time as to what draws your eye. Hugh: i covered Decorex and 100% Design. i had wanted to attend rather more shows, but spent longer at both than i expected i would need to, which proves both shows were even better than last year. Decorex’s new home is a great venue and location, but shame about the extra distance from Focus if you also want to get to both on the same day. Excellent to see the show has grown while still maintaining the quality of product on offer.

36 : in.Sight 100% was also bigger. For me last year was a big improvement on previous years, and this year was even better. A broader mix of the “well established with new products” and the “emerging designers with cutting edge offerings.” Nico: having been to most of the shows, including Maison, 100%, Decorex, Focus, LAPADA and designjunction i would have to say that designjunction was my favourite of them all. the majority of the shows are very highly polished affairs – slick salespeople waiting to pounce and bombard you with their new products for designers to specify; designjunction has a totally different ambience about it. the collection of exhibitors is a real eclectic mix, from children’s gifts to hand blown glass. the exhibitors themselves have a real passion and love for what they are showing, mostly down to the fact that they themselves have designed and built it. this by far was a truly inspiring show and without doubt my favourite! Did one exhibitor’s display stand out from the rest? Ros: there were so many good stands. i absolutely loved the lighting installation at tent by Sharon Marston. it replicated a forest scene by means of fibre optics and fabric orchids. it was exquisite. i also liked the Lapicida stand at Decorex for the clever integration of new designs using age old materials like marble and travertine. 3D effect flooring was showcased by means of traditionally framed period artworks with the contemporary floor within the subject matter. Hugh: At Decorex i liked Abbott and Boyd’s stand for an excellently designed and constructed showcase. i also liked the Rug

Kristjana Williams Studio, one of Clare’s favourites Company stand keeping it simple, but hard work for the two staff members folding back and forth through the layers of rugs! For fun and frivolity the harlequin London stand caught my attention – i think the only one to make use of the high ceiling of the tent with an upper floor. their ‘front garden’ was the icing on the cake. At 100% i liked the craftsmanship displayed by interior iD. Nico: in terms of who stood out the most for me, i would have to say was Utopia and Utility at designjunction, and harlequin at Decorex. For Utopia and Utility it was the beautifully crafted glass, wood and copper vessels – stunning pieces! At Decorex, harlequin had a fantastic stand which was built as a two storey house with a quaint front lawn. the selection of homewares was truly beautiful including a peacock that took my fancy priced at £90,000.00.

38 : in.Sight Clare: At 100% i enjoyed learning more about the Design guild Mark, who promote British furniture makers, this promises to be a good source of UK designer makers. i love the products of Delightfull and Bocca de Loco, so it was great to see them in the flesh; and the products of Coach Potato Company showcasing Knoll & Saarinen were amazing. But, i think the products that made me smile the most and to design a scheme around them were the beautiful fabrics, prints and wall papers of Kristjana S Williams. At tent and Super Brands there was so much new talent that it’s hard to choose. it was refreshing to meet an architect’s practice (Peter Morris Architecture) giving out free advice, dispelling the myths that architects are hard to approach and that small projects cannot afford their input. i loved the Nonla Pendants by Paul Crofts, and the furniture by Duffy London; but my stand out product from tent was the simply stunning wall paper by Blackpop. At Decorex it was lovely to see the stunning presentation of Missoni’s calmer palette collections, and to generally see a more eclectic and individual collection of products start to seep in amidst the usual fabric houses, glossy furniture and statement lighting that Decorex is filled with. Blanca: the harlequin stand, with its two tier arrangement looking out over the rest of the scene, won best in show. there were many other stands which drew the eye with quirky elements, such as the hands installation on the Little greene Paint Company stand, and the beaded pirate ships hanging from the ceiling on the Firmdale hotels stand, designed by Kit Kemp.

Nico Yiannikkou What was your best new discovery? Hugh: Curtain fabrics incorporating LEDs woven into the material. Creation Baumann at 100% had a few brand new designs but i am certain we will see a lot more coming onto the market very soon. the possibilities are endless! At Decorex, Lapicida’s collaboration with Bethan grey – awesome craftsmanship displayed with the black and white herringbone marble top. Nico: My best discovery would have to be Poetic-Lab they have developed ‘Ripple’, a piece of work which combines light and movement which gives a fluid movement of soft light which is projected onto a wall. A finely crafted brass motor gently rotates the imperfect hand blown glass domes which in turn create a ripple effect onto the wall. Absolutely beautiful piece which we will definitely be commissioning soon!

harlequin’s stand caught Nico’s eye Clare: the children’s wallpaper by Blackpop is simply charming; amazing colour palettes and artwork and the amazing products on the textiles Scotland Stand (Decorex), showcasing soft Scottish wool, leather, vibrant prints and wall paper. Products that inspire me to design get my vote! Blanca: A particularly exciting discovery was LcD Luz Druez. An array of ‘fabrics’ made from natural and artificial materials gave a feast for the eyes of rolls of inviting new materials. in particular those which combined metal threads such as bronze and copper stood out and sparked the imagination in terms of their possible uses. these were then taken further by suggestions of combining them with perspex and glass to create back-lit panels. Another interesting company i came across was Michael Northcroft, a family run

40 : in.Sight What would you add to an interior design show to improve it? Nico: in terms of improvements i’m not sure how i would go about trying to improve them. it’s great to see so much talent every year. i am proud to see so much home grown talent year after year, we are by far the best place to be for design. Cannot wait till next year! Clare: More seating, free water and daylight! it’s so hard to register the products accurately in dull electric light! And clearer signs telling you where the loos are!! Blanca: i would add extra seating for the visitors and interesting refreshments! i would also make the show more of an experience for all the senses, playing with light and sound in entrance areas to build the sense of anticipation prior to entering the show. in particular, enabling more seamless travel for visitors would be a must, such as a shuttle service to Waterloo/Kings Cross Stations for Decorex which would make it far more accessible, and would be very welcome, especially at the end of the show when you are loaded up with brochures.

hugh spotted eLumino from Création Baumann company manufacturing furniture in London, their product is modern, with clean lines and interesting veneers. i’m looking forward to working with them. Ros: Again, too many to mention for me but i noted the stand by Fameed Khalique for stunning metallic fabrics as well as Philip Watts for the most spectacular door handles ever – and giles Miller for an exciting new range of textured wall finishes.

every day till the last. Ros: i’d really like the shows to stay open later so that it is easy to attend in the evenings after work. September is an extremely busy time in the industry and having that extra bit of time would really help. i’d remove hard copy brochures in favour of scanned e-brochures emailed within 24 hours of the show. this would avoid the requirement to carry heavy brochures around the venues. i’d also like to add lockers should you be attending after a client meeting. that way you can safely store large and heavy bags for your duration at the show.

Hugh: At Decorex the main entrance was confusing and disappointing, and i thought from the pre show media that we would be walking through Kit Kemp’s lovely two stands. Once inside, the signage was poor and there weren’t nearly enough seats for the two coffee and patisserie only outlets. i was extremely surprised to have to print my own ticket for tent & Super Brands – you would think that in 2013 you could arrive at all the shows with a reference number and gain entrance. having attended 100% it was really annoying to continue to receive emails from the organisers beckoning me to come

t’s not an either/or choice with blinds and curtains, many schemes incorporate the two, and to that you can add the extensive range of pelmets, poles, finials and tiebacks available! “Today’s fabric trends are about clever coordination,” explained Saffron Hare, Sales Director at James Hare Ltd. “Combine blinds with curtains to give subtle light control and create a smart co-ordinated look by mixing and matching different colours and textures for curtains, blinds and cushions. using collections such as James Hare’s oriel Silks takes the guess work out of co-ordinating, bringing together a palette of plains and decoratives which you can use with confidence.” Inspired by the natural world, grey is one of today’s key neutrals, with tones of stone, flax, metal and other elementals. “It’s a great backdrop for a palette of fashionbrights including hot blues and pinks and acid tones of yellow and green inspired by vintage fabrics,” Saffron added. “James Hare’s Astor silk collection spans neutrals to vivid brights and as a faux silk dupion it can even be used to dress windows in kitchens and bathrooms.”

Look Out! Window dressing can soften or make a focus of a window, and adds drama and detail to any room. Juliet Davies gets some ideas from the experts

Roman blinds are a great way to change a look of an interior. “They can be fitted either inside or outside the window recess depending on the style and décor of the room,” explained Julia Brendel. “Some older properties have beautifully detailed window frames and it would be a shame to cover them completely. In this case it’s better to fit a Roman blind inside the recess of the

in.Vogue : 43

window. In this example, the window should not open inwards, should be symmetrical and the recess can’t be too shallow.” If the window does not have any special features around it or if it’s not completely symmetrical, it’s easier to fit the blind outside the recess. “This is also better for bedrooms as the blind overlapping the recess will not allow any light to sneak in early in the morning,” added Julia. “When measuring the window for a blind outside the recess allow for around 5cm extra on each side of the blind. A decorative pelmet is an elegant way to finish the look of a blind for both methods of fitting.” Blinds are a particular favourite among choices for window dressings in today’s homes. Blinds give the opportunity for homeowners to select from a range of innovative patterns, colours, textures and designs in order to give a room that all important ‘wow!’ factor. “Blackout blinds, which block out a high percentage of incoming light, are a popular feature for bedrooms and bathrooms in the home,” said Lauren Revill, buyer at Cargo. “Cargo’s Inga Woodland Blackout Blinds feature a design inspired by nature, bringing a touch of the outside in with its earthy chocolate colour. Now you can enjoy a lazy Sunday lie-in for longer!” A top interior design trend is to use a combination of blinds and curtains to dress a window. “This could see a patterned blind, such as Cargo’s Bella Pink or Floresca grey blinds, being complemented by a neutral set of curtains, or vice versa,” added Lauren. “The choices really are limitless!”

orchard Silks from James Hare For bedrooms in particular, black-out capacity is important in a window dressing. “Bloc has seen a real rise in the sales of our Blocout concept, which cuts down on heat loss in homes by as much as 43%, by cleverly sealing off the space between the window and the back of the blind, running on a specially developed side rail system,” described Charlie Mainwaring, Sales and Marketing Manager at Bloc. “The secondary and equally important function of this design means that it also offers a complete black out effect, so it’s great for using in bedrooms. It’s these kinds of ‘smart-home’ innovations that seem to be really growing in demand, and we are delighted to be creating precision designed, engineered solutions for this sector of the market.” And with some blinds you can leave them down for their decorative qualities whilst

46 : in.Vogue The fashion for large glazed areas in external walls makes a room fabulously airy, but brings its own problems at dusk. “Increasingly our clients are installing large glazed areas such as bi-fold doors which look great during the long days of summer, but as the dark winter evenings descend these large glazed panels look black and uninviting,” explained Pret A Vivre’s Founder and Director, Joanne Cassabois. “In addressing the problem, we have introduced a range of voiles and sheer fabrics, some machine washable, ideal for use on such windows. Ideal for filtering light during the day, Pret A Vivre’s new voiles welcome light into the room and give the windows a soft, neutral glow at night.”

work is bespoke, we often create finials for customers. We have even been asked to replicate a client’s dog’s face as a finial! We have recently launched a very contemporary range of tracks and poles, for those who are seeking the more modern urban look. This range includes track with a finial incorporated, leather and steel finials plus a tight wire system.”

And don’t forget that the window dressing itself can be the focal point of the room if the other decor is neutral – it’s a quick way to totally change the look in comparatively little time. “Strong confident colours continue to be a popular trend within the windows and blinds industry as they really help to make a statement within a room,” said

Whilst blinds usually have hidden fixings, and pelmets conceal the tops of some curtains, poles and finials are a design element in themselves, and can be contemporary or traditional, ornate or minimalist. Todd Knights are well known for their elegant poles and finials. “We have spotted a definite trend back to curtain poles, and right now we are doing a lot of traditional finials but with contemporary finishes, such as Adam style urns in a flat ice white, perfect on a grey stained or walnut pole,” said Darren Knights of Todd Knights. “As our

Bijou Beauty Interior Designer Lindsey Rendall tells us how she met the brief with her detailed space planning and fabulous use of colour for this bijou London apartment

T

he future is looking bright for interior designer Lindsey rendall of rendall & Wright. They recently won the redevelopment category in design et al’s Design and Architecture Awards 2013 and were shortlisted in the residential £1-2.5m category. rendall & Wright are also award winners in the international Property Awards 2013. With an honours degree in printed and woven textiles and 14 years designing luxurious interiors for both residential and commercial projects under her belt, Lindsey’s approach to design remains the same; practical, sympathetic and expertly executed. Lindsey’s completed projects are effortlessly elegant and dressed to impress using tantalising textiles.

viewing, this time bringing Lindsey along. Lindsey agreed that the apartment could meet her client’s needs: a Monday to friday residence with good entertaining space for a young professional couple with no children. With busy jobs in the City, the couple asked Lindsey to realise their vision, giving her a tight eight week schedule to complete the refurbishment. A clear and concise brief was provided: to incorporate a living room, dining space

Positioned in Maida Vale adjacent to the canals and close to small boutique shops, sat a soulless, poorly renovated period apartment waiting to be revived. rendall & Wright were contacted in April 2012 by existing clients whose property in Colchester they previously designed in 2009. Having looked at the handsome stuccofronted building, the client initially dismissed the apartment because of its petite size, just 850 square feet. However the flat’s high ceilings, soaring windows and fabulous location stuck in their minds. After much deliberation the couple returned for a second

The island increased kitchen workspace

52 : in.Brief and fully fitted, well-equipped kitchen to comfortably seat six adults within the single reception room. The two bedrooms were to have generous storage. A laundry area was to be designed to house washing machines, tumble dryer, cleaning products, ironing board, suitcases, boiler and associated items. Bathrooms were to have good storage. Light was to be maximised, the building’s proportions and history was to be celebrated, but above all the space should feel sumptuous, sophisticated, young and with a sense of fun! At the point of purchase, storage throughout the apartment was extremely limited. This was most noticeable in the kitchen which consisted of a tiny strip of units along one wall in the sitting-room. Space was so poorly planned that the fridge, along with the freezer, was housed in the entrance hall cupboard. Lighting throughout the property consisted of harsh spot lighting, all architectural features had been removed and poor quality carpet fitted throughout.

Lindsey’s main challenge was to incorporate a living and dining space to seat six adults as well as a fully fitted kitchen into one moderately sized space. Lindsey designed the kitchen to have generously tall cupboards to maximise storage potential and to balance the height of the ceilings. By using two materials for the kitchen cupboards Lindsey divide the storage and cooking areas from the working space. “The use of wood adjacent to the sleek lines of the white units adds warmth, drama and defines the zones of the small kitchen,” Lindsey explained. “The height of the units gives a sense of scale to the room and the white Corian worktop enables the units to blend into the background when not in use.”

54 : in.Brief Lindsey incorporated a peninsular island within the kitchen to increase the workspace and to create a barrier between the kitchen and lounge areas, clearly defining the living zones. Lindsey cleverly incorporated a fitted glass dining table to the end of the island. This provides an extra preparation area in the kitchen, a desk/work space and most importantly an elegant dining area. The use of glass ensures that the table does not encroach on the space and maximises the feeling of light. The use of antiqued mirror panels for the splashbacks provides an elegant touch to the otherwise contemporary kitchen. Along with their aesthetic quality, they serve a practical purpose. The panels have been fitted in large pieces to minimise joins and the result is an illusion of depth and added atmosphere. Light from the large single window is reflected back into the room whilst movement from the trees outside is reflected in the glass, providing a sense of life and softness within an otherwise angular space. This trick has been employed throughout the apartment, with mirrored pieces appearing in every room. The neutral canvas has been invigorated with bold pops of colour. Since the apartment isn’t large, Lindsey felt it was important to have a definite sense of flow throughout the rooms. The repeated use of colours and materials ensures a natural and subtle link as you move through the space. Hard flooring was necessary throughout the entrance area and living room for practical reasons. The building’s management regulations state that timber floors may not be installed due to sound interference between apartments. However, Lindsey wanted to achieve the warmth of a

Bespoke fuss-free cabinetry provides ample storage parquet wooden floor so sourced an Amtico product with a wood design in faux walnut that befits the elegance of the living space whilst still complying with the regulations. A sound-proofing membrane was laid beneath the vinyl along with electrical under floor heating. Changing the heating source enabled Lindsey to remove the radiators freeing up valuable wall space within the property. Lindsey’s approach to the decoration was to create a warm, neutral canvas, painting the walls a soft putty colour and commissioning wide-slat shutters for the windows to compliment the apartment’s soaring ceilings. Classically shaped pieces of furniture were commissioned and finished in an equally neutral pallet. Bespoke cabinets were made and finished in gloss to effortlessly melt into the wall colour. Mirrored pieces of furniture

Mirrored pieces appear in every room were sourced for each room, providing continuity throughout the property and once again bouncing the natural light around the space. into this calm, muted colour pallet Lindsey injected bold shots of acid colour. Two roche Bobois Curl armchairs in yellow leather create a fabulous statement sitting against a backdrop of inherited black and white etchings. Yellow is repeated as an accent colour throughout the property and is paired with fuchsia and a touch of purple to really pack a punch. A bespoke painting by Donna Leighton behind the sofa beautifully pulls all the tones and textures together. The client was so delighted with the visual impact of the grey and yellow colour pallet that the couple chose the same hues as accent colours for their September 2013 wedding!

Lindsey redesigned the lighting schemes throughout the property to incorporate soft low-level lighting, up-lighting and statement chandeliers. The scale and grandeur of these stunning pieces, including an exquisite Murano glass chandelier in the living space, add a wonderful sense of scale to the ceiling heights and a touch of age-old elegance to the striking interior. “i love lighting,” Lindsey explained. “The drama and ambience achieved changes an interior from day to night. i like to use a variety of lighting schemes within a space to provide flexibility for the client. i couldn’t resist the Blob lamp and Gourd lamp from Porta romana for this project. The colours of the lampshades add energy to the scheme and the hand-blown glass provides an authenticity and crafted quality to the interior.”

The entrance hall cupboard became a laundry room with storage for utility products and the understated bathrooms were sympathetically finished. A project undertaken by rendall & Wright wouldn’t be complete without an array of stunning textiles. Lindsey has used a range of fabrics: wools for curtains; velvets, cotton and leather for upholstery; silks, chenille and satin for accessories. The layering of textures and tones provides richness whilst the occasional use of pattern creates another element of interest. The renovation of this chic apartment is characterised by strong lines, an intense colour palette, a mixture of contemporary and traditional pieces, along with carefully selected materials. Wool Competition Calls For Designers The Campaign for Wool, and their national UK wool week which took place on 14th-20th October, was supported by the BIID. The UK Wool Week was a seven day festival of events and workshops celebrating wool in all its guises

A

key part of this year’s Campaign for Wool calendar was the ‘Design a Wool Room’ competition run in association with Homes & Gardens magazine. The competition offered the opportunity to demonstrate design skills using this cosseting, practical and sustainable material. Earlier this year, designers including Kit Kemp, Ashley Hicks, Josephine Ryan and Fox Linton Associates explored the possibilities of wool in the home when they created a series of rooms at Somerset House in London for The Campaign for Wool’s showcase Wool House. Now, The Campaign for Wool are inviting designers, students or those with an eye for interiors to dream up their own schemes using woollen fabrics, flooring and accessories in a new competition, ‘Celebrate the Beauty of Wool.’ The competition has three categories, Professional, Non-professional and Student and each living room entry should be designed to celebrate the beauty of wool, so as much of the scheme as possible,

including flooring, textiles and accessories, should consist of wool. The closing date is 8 November 2013 and winners will be contacted by 15 November. Winners will have their designs brought to life in the magazine and each will receive a selection of luxury wool prizes worth over £1,000! The Campaign officially began in October

2010, and has since been introduced to key international markets in Australia, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Norway and Japan. The global endeavor was initiated by its patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, in order to raise awareness amongst consumers about the unique, natural and sustainable benefits offered by wool. BIID Supports AIA Student Charrette The British Institute of Interior Design has again collaborated with the London Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) on its Student Design Charrette competition for the third consecutive year

T

aking place on Saturday 2nd November at the Zaha Hadid designed Roca Gallery in London, students will be given the chance to design collectively whilst mentored by an experienced practicing architect or interior designer. Interior design and architecture students from across the county are invited to take part in the one day competition, where the theme will ask them to explore how the River Thames connects communities and affects life across London.

“The Charrette is a brilliant experience that we would encourage design students to get involved with,” said Hayley Manning, BIID Student Director (above). “It is as always an honour to collaborate again with the AIA for such an educational and thought provoking event. The response was extremely positive last year, with a high level of creativity on display. We believe it is very important to show our support for competitions such as the Charrette in order to nurture the future talent of our industry. I am very much looking forward to seeing the designs the

students submit this year.” This year the jury will be chaired by Professor George Kunihiro, FAIA and International Director AIA.
