One of the interior design world’s highlights occurs later this month with Clerkenwell Design Week hosting its eighth event! On p06 we take a look at some of the fantastic treats in store. i’m always impressed by how much our friends who participate in Week in the Life pack into their days, and Fadi Cherry of The Design studio is no different! As with most successful people though, he strikes a great work/life balance and keeps friends firmly in his fixture list (see p12).

Talking of work, in in.Vogue on p20 we look at some great office furniture that keeps your back as well as your brain in top form.

Clerkenwell Design Week has been crucial in the promotion of London’s creative industry, spotlighting Clerkenwell’s unique history, craftsmanship and commerce. Over recent years, the area has seen CDW develop increasingly collaborative relationships with the local community and public bodies, working together to enhance the recognition and importance of this world-class design cluster.

With the aim of increasing footfall in the north of Clerkenwell, “The Conversations at Clerkenwell” series will be staged in a specially designed talks space located within Design Fields. The temporary structure is complimented by the Design Library, supported by +Halle furniture; a space where visitors can relax, refresh and recharge whilst enjoying reading a wide selection of leading design publications.

As well as hosting an abundance of furniture and interiors showrooms, Clerkenwell is also home to a variety of other creative practices including architects, branding agencies and craft studios. In celebration of Clerkenwell Design Week, a selection of 25 of these local practices throw open their doors to the festival’s visitors and host workshops, displays, talks and installations. Country styling will meet cityscapes at Home and Gift Buyers’ Festival, held 16th – 19th July at the Harrogate Convention Centre

key date in the retail buying calendar, this festival gives buyers the opportunity to discover new products, meet new brands for the first time, and purchase from a range of industry areas.

With an entire hall dedicated to showcasing some of the best home and interior accessories brands, next year’s trends are really set to come to life, helping visitors make well-informed purchasing decisions on furniture, soft furnishings and accessories.

A Week In The Life Of Fadi Cherry

in.HIS LIFE : 13 Having worked as a creative director at leading advertising firms in Middle East, Fadi Cherry moved to London to pursue a Masters Degree in Design at the University of the Arts London (2008), after which he studied Interior Design and Decoration at Chelsea University of Arts (2010), and then established The Design Studio in London in late 2010 Monday It’s Monday morning, the start of a new week. After my ritual morning coffee I get a work out in to get me in the right frame of mind to tackle Monday! I rarely deviate from this routine; I follow my two main thoughts “first coffee, then the world” and “A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.” I find this especially important when commencing a new week.

After that I am ready for the week, I arrange my workflow, answer emails, write proposals and prepare for my new pitches.

I then spend the day visiting my various project sites. I have a site supervisor, but I feel it is essential that I am as hands-on

as possible. Not only to give my clients assurance of my commitment, but also to ensure the design is accomplished as envisioned by myself.

Tuesday Today I am heading to see clients in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, to agree the final selection of fabrics, furniture and colours before I place the orders. Final sign-off is essential, I feel it is paramount that one not get carried away with one’s own wishes and always remember who the project is for.

The style we have agreed upon is shabby chic with an urban modern style. I have found that the style chosen by my

14 : in.HIS LIFE clients always corresponds with their background and ethnicity; I am almost always able to predict what they will prefer, which makes it very easy for me when I present ideas, so there is little dissatisfaction.

This afternoon, I head to Shoreditch, East London. I am meeting with an old client for whom I designed his Penthouse some two years previously. He has asked me to refurbish his study room. We have planned to follow an ‘all white’ scheme. We will be using white sheen laminated wood, large shining white tiles and white office furniture, topped with an accent of Ralph Lauren cushions and accessories. I am aiming for a smart, intellectual and modern look; I believe we are close to achieving this vision.

Nowadays I find myself having a slight enthusiasm with heated big tiles, I look for excuses to use them instead of wood flooring and carpets. But only where appropriate, as they give a modern fresh look.

Wednesday Recently I met a representative from a Qatari family to discuss a retail concept store for their new Abaya store chain in the gulf.

Therefore, today I will be focusing in the studio with my 3D specialist creating and finalising the last touches of the design.

I am trying to launch a new idea for the Abaya shop by introducing the cultural dress in a modern space. Most of the Abaya shops in the Middle East are very cliché and predictable. It is time to bring them up to date with the modern world we live in even though their product is closely related to their ancient culture and practices. I have kept to the brief but punctuated the design with cobalt blue chairs. The client isn’t sure yet.

16 : in.HIS LIFE Thursday After my morning trip to my gym and obligatory coffee, I am all energised and ready for the second half of the week. This morning I have an important meeting with a well-known textile supplier at Chelsea Harbour, to discuss an exclusive collaboration between us and to check which of their fabrics will be best for my new online store where I plan to sell accessories. I’m very passionate about this project and I am excited it’s coming together.

I then rush to a lunch planned with a close friend, we usually get together this time of the year to plan our summer trips. This year we’re looking forward to St Tropez and a boat trip off the coast of Sardinia. Beautiful destinations always refresh me and give me inspirations for future projects, my interior design eye is always working and never rests! This is both a blessing and an annoyance.

Also, this afternoon I plan to book my trip to Dubai where I will visit an exhibition I want to see. This exhibition is vital for me as it comprises eight market-leading interiors,

design and surface materials sectors. I am an avid networker and such occasions are the perfect opportunities to meet my peers, rekindle, as well as make new connections.

Whilst in the Middle East I need to make sure to meet my new client in Abu Dhabi, to discuss a new residential project as well as a representative for the Qatari project to finalise the design before its commencement. I thoroughly enjoy days like today because travelling is what I enjoy the most after interior design.

Friday The good thing is that Friday is a short day for me; in the afternoons I visit my sites, mainly the Mayfair ones at the moment, to assess how the work is progressing. I speak to both my contractors and my clients to plan what we are supposed to do by the following week. Also on Fridays I Facetime with my close friend Collette who lives in Canada and we discuss all things

I then catch up with another friend who works in PR, we meet in town at The Ham Yard Hotel, Soho for a drink where we discuss the latest happenings in the industry, business and interior design and what I should be doing on social media.

Once the evening begins, the weekend is here and my social side comes out. I frequently have visitors from abroad or old friends who like to catch up, so I enjoy taking them to my favourite venues in town. This evening I have booked Sexy Fish, Berkeley Square, for my friends visiting from Miami. Sexy Fish has great ambience, food and wine; the perfect combination for a good night. We continue on to MNKY HSE, a private members’ club on Dover Street which opened last December, which has a cool design and crowd.

The Weekend Even though it’s the weekend, there is no rest for me, like most people! Since this business for me is based on word of mouth and social media, I enjoy spending time with my clients over lunch and dinner at various venues in Knightsbridge and Mayfair,

which we mix up with some shopping, so I can keep abreast of their current likes. This connection allows me to do a better job for them to leave them satisfied with the work I have done.

Since I was a former model, I still have my connections to the fashion world.

Today I am going have a dinner with the general manager of Tod’s to discuss about a collaboration for a new retail design shop for their brand. Talking about the fashion world and connections might lead me to fly soon to Miami, to discuss a penthouse design in the Setai hotel residences for an old friend and fashion designer, which could be very exciting work as well. It always amazes me

how someone I have known from years ago in another industry leads to something in a completely different industry.

Ah Sunday, the day of rest! A walk in nearby Hyde Park with my dog is a must. When I can, I horse ride in the park. It’s something I have enjoyed since my childhood and it’s a real treat for the senses. Living so close to the park, I can enjoy many of the outdoor benefits of having a huge park on my door step, so later, after my run, I grab dinner at my favourite Iranian restaurant just off Connaught Square and look forward to what the week ahead brings. www.fadicherry.com

ffering a full day of practical content, the programme includes eight inspiring and informative talks on business success that aim to help interior designers to develop and grow their businesses.
