Embracing “Resimercial” in Workplace Design Based in Bath, Interaction are office design and build experts who specialise in creative projects. With over 25 years’ experience in positively enhancing the culture, values, wellbeing and productivity of businesses, insurance specialists SunLife turned to them to create their new Bristol headquarters.
F
ounded in 1810 and becoming a part of the Phoenix Group in 2016, SunLife has a rich history. The team therefore wanted a workplace that would match their historical reputation and offer the wow-factor for employees and visitors – in addition to facilitating more flexible and efficient ways of working. Upon finding the perfect new 15,000 sq. ft. waterfront location in one of Bristol’s core office areas, Interaction’s work could begin.
long-term level. This included a mix of work and downtime areas, integrated technology and a choice of meeting areas. The finished project was successfully tailor-made to the practical needs of everyone who would be working in the new office. The overall result is a modern two-floor space that combines practicality and visual appeal, whilst also facilitating a new working culture for the team by providing more flexibility.
breakout area. Inspired by the way a trunk’s rings represent years, the in-office tree represents the experience and embodied knowledge of SunLife, which was founded over two hundred years ago. Equally, encircled by seating, this area helps to create a sense of calm and provides a space for SunLife team members to think through complex ideas, but also to recuperate during hectic periods. Biophilic touches like this not only add visual appeal but help to inspire and motivate employees.
Working closely with the SunLife team, they learned exactly what requirements were needed, both on a day-to-day and

With keen eyes for detail, Interaction paid close attention to the finishing touches in the space. The SunLife team wanted the design to reflect the building’s waterfront location and traditional use as a soap and vinegar warehouse. Subsequently, the creative minds at Interaction sourced and integrated retro soap advertisements, rustic brick-effect walls and a shipping telegraph and wheel. By incorporating a mix of creative touches such as these with practical working and meeting areas, this innovative workplace will help to inspire productivity. Aside from its visual appeal, the overall space makes way for choice; employees can decide where and how they want to work. In turn, this sense of flexibility will support employee wellness – something that is vital for the running of a successful workplace. The project was firmly influenced by Resimercial; the latest trend to gain popularity in commercial design. Resimercial encompasses layouts, architecture and furniture that blend residential and domestic interiors with more traditional workplace aspects. It revolves around the liberalisation of workplace design, which puts people and their work-life balance at the centre. By creating comfortable environments, the workplace becomes a place that staff members want to come to work in, rather than a place they have to be. This, in turn, enhances productivity -- a factor that underpins the Resimercial trend. By working in a more comfortable space, individuals are inspired to be more creative and collaborative. It is this philosophy that supported SunLife’s new workplace design. Hayley Whitlock, one of the designers on the project, commented: “Every design and build project we work on is based around creating agile, collaborative and flexible working spaces that bring out the best in people – and Resimercial
08 : in.SIGHT
now plays a significant role in this too. SunLife wanted to enhance their working culture with a modern, collaborative and wow-factor space. A key part of achieving this came from utilising the Resimercial trend and combining spaces for working and downtime, in addition to one-of-a-kind finishing touches. The breakout areas give a particular nod to Resimercial by offering the comfort of home in a workplace setting, with varied styles of seating, lighting and décor. The overall result is a flexible environment suitable for SunLife’s modern workforce – and one that will encourage collaboration, creative thinking and productivity.” Aside from Resimercial, another key factor that led to the project’s success was Interaction’s effective working relationships, with both SunLife and third parties. By nurturing relationships, effective communication naturally follows – and this means projects can be completed to the best of everyone’s abilities, on time and to budget; a result that was achieved for SunLife.
Throughout the ten-week project, SunLife were impressed with the Interaction team. They were particularly pleased with the unique finish and are thrilled to have a workplace that stands out and that will help their brand live up to its well-renowned name. The creation of SunLife’s amazing new Bristol HQ highlights Interaction’s
philosophy: that office fit-outs or refurbishments should be the result of a collaborative process that puts employees back into the heart of workplace design. By doing so, Interaction ensure that great workspaces become great workplaces that are truly built for the people that use them. www.interaction.uk.com

Is the Office Dead? BIID member May Fawzy, founder of commercial sector design specialist Mf Design Studio, explores the concept of Activity Based Working and how this has evolved workplace design.
I
s the office dead? A question asked every day by many employees all over the world. If we have all the technology that enables us to work remotely from home, what’s the point of going to the office every day? Although it may sound
May Fawzy, BIID member and founder of Mf Design Studio
perfect, the human interaction in the office is something we can never replace or simulate. This daily interaction benefits both the employees and the employers; sharing ideas, experiences and knowledge is an inevitable part of the work process. Over the years we have witnessed the change in the way we work as a response to the evolution of technology. Technology has not only reshaped our work life, it has also changed the way we use our offices. As a result, workplace design has had to adopt new concepts to keep up with the fast pace of technology. The office as we used to know it may have died, but instead a much more interactive, dynamic and flexible space has evolved. If the office is dead, why do we still need it? A lot of what we used to do in the office
in the past can now be done far more efficiently at our dining table. So why do we go to the office? We go to the office to talk. Organisations measure their success by the ideas, innovation and creativity of their teams. When individuals come together to talk, big ideas are born. In the last decade, we have started to see a lot of the large organisations moving away from the office with dedicated desks to a more flexible approach where staff can occupy any space at any point of their day, dependent on the activity they are performing. This approach encourages staff’s mobility and interaction; a concept the modern office is keen on and is known as Activity Based Working or ABW. ABW recognises that for people to perform different activities they

Citrix, Paddington, Mf Design Studio need a variety of work settings, the right technology and a trusting and collaborative culture to support it. It provides employees with purposefully designed settings to best support the many different activities that are undertaken in a workplace. From individual focused work, to interaction with your team, one-to-one meetings, brainstorming sessions and large board meetings, each one of these activities requires a certain setup to be carried out efficiently. The one-space-suits-all concept no longer works. Each space has to be designed with the user in mind, catering for the various teams, people and the different activities. As easy as it sounds, this comes with a challenge and careful planning becomes inevitable to ensure that each one of us will find the right setup to perform activities in an efficient and enjoyable way. So how does ABW help us? Adopting more flexible ways of working comes with its benefits and advantages. Spending our working day in an office that has been specifically designed to suit our daily activities and work needs means we are working in a healthier
Citrix, Paddington, Mf Design Studio environment. In turn, this healthier environment will reflect positively on our productivity, efficiency and wellbeing. Our work-life balance improves and therefore organisations improve their employee satisfaction and save costs. A win-win for the employer and the employee. The Benefits of Working with Independent Designers Elliott Pace is the Design Director of Spatial Office Environments - a leading fit out contractor and FF&E supplier to the commercial office sector. Elliott shares his thoughts on why working with external, independent designers is good for business.
S
ince our inception in 2014, we’ve worked hard to build a class leading fit-out and FF&E company. We’ve done it in part by taking the best bits from our old companies and moulding them with new, fresh and modern ideologies and working practices.
From the offset, we positioned ourselves to be a totally independent and unbiased FF&E provider - meaning we could source, recommend and put forward the right product for the job, irrespective of the manufacturer. We wanted each and every one of our in-house designs to be as unique as the constraints on them would permit; By being a totally independent specifier, this would allow us far greater flexibility when designing our interiors than a client would normally get from any run of the mill fit out company. To some extent, as a consequence of the wealth of our FF&E supply chain, our own interior designs have benefited tremendously. It’s so easy, however, to lose sight of
your direction. When your time is taken up performing the necessary day-to-day running of your business, you can easily fall prey to the conveyor belt mentality of working. In an effort to get items ticked off your to-do list as quickly as possible, you naturally go to the easiest, time tested solutions you know and trust. Whilst this may be ok in other sectors, in the office fit out environment things can begin to look stale rather quickly. The resultant output is that all your projects start to feel the same and you lose that vital uniqueness and perspective that you once had. To combat this fatigue, and in an attempt to always innovate and push boundaries, we periodically force ourselves to take a step back and reassess the market and our own internal processes. We actively look for ways on how we can improve,
in.VOGUE : 15 and, sometimes, it takes an outside influence to open our eyes. This is where stepping out of the silo and working with others comes into its own. Over the past few years we’ve noticed a big shift in the awareness from companies across the board seeking to use effective interior design as a means to attract the best staff, increase retention and wellbeing and to improve their overall brand image. A lot of these companies are desperately reaching out to Interior Designers to help them achieve this goal. In line with this, we’ve also noticed a steadily growing number of small, independent interior design firms appearing on the scene. Often consisting of time served designers taking leave of their much larger employers and setting up by themselves - either individually or in small groups - or they are formally Interior Decorators and students taking their first steps in becoming bonafide Interior Designers. Whatever the reason, there is now a healthy abundance of designers forging a living in a sector that is starting to wake up and truly embrace
Interior Design for what it is. Designers bring with them an entirely different perspective born from their own experiences and backgrounds. Their ideas and their inspirations - often taken from the most abstract and wonderful places - are unique to them, and, in turn, make their designs unique. It’s this individuality which often shines through on projects and helps create great places for others to work within that are totally different from anywhere else. The struggles facing these independent designers, however, can be numerous. Problems such as: how do they find the work - be it through networking events, marketing channels or any other means; do they have the available time and resources to perform certain elements of a job; or are there gaps in their knowledge base or with any technical solutions available to design problems they face; By championing the independent Interior Designer, by working alongside them and filling the voids wherever possible, we help build a mutually beneficial community that’s a win win for all.
your
Ultimately, if we’ve been able to help in some small way, we’ve made a difference. Besides the feeling you get when you’ve done a good deed, by helping out independent designers we help improve our own business. By periodically outsourcing some of the design element of projects, it helps keep our own designers’ minds focused, in vogue and on point. We remain fresh, forward thinking and very much part of the community that keeps pushing the world of office interiors forward into the 21st century. We remain innovators and we remain a head of the curve. It’s simply good business sense. Spatial Office Environments are opening a new showroom facility in Altrincham, Manchester, on the 19th April. To mark the occasion and to give back to the local design community, Spatial will also be putting on two special RIBA approved CPD events. London Calling Mesh Office Seating are celebrating their tenth anniversary of providing ergonomic seating solutions across the United Kingdom. said: “Expanding our presence into the heart of the UK furniture sector is the logical next step in our sales strategy. Our new showroom space is a perfect complement to the dealer network that we have already established in the United Kingdom.” Graeme Barlow, UK Sales Director adds: “From a distribution perspective, there is much to play for in the next few years and there is an opportunity to build on the commercial demand that’s attracting companies to buy our products. The new showroom space gives us the opportunity to present our innovative seating concepts and products in the best possible way.”
Comfort will be running special promotions and events over the year. With over one million unit sales under its belt, the Enjoy chair is still a firm favourite in the ergonomic seating marketplace, and with Ergohuman, the flagship chair close to breaking the million-unit mark too; and with two new chairs in development, the demand for Comfort products shows no signs of slowing. A Hot Spot for Charging & Co-working Dune, designed by pioneering Swedish design studio, Front, offers an exciting new response to the constantly changing needs of our work places and public spaces. Dune has been developed for the spheres where the need for informal meetings intersects with the demand for relaxed seating.
D
une garnered considerable attention as a prototype under development in Offecct Lab when it was exhibited at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2017. Dune was launched as a novelty at the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair February 2018. We are really satisfied with the lightness of Dune, says designers Anna Lindgren and Sofia Lagerkvist, the members of Front. This is, after all, a large piece of furniture that easily can seat up to eight people. Despite being so delicate, Dune stands firmly on the ground. Its legs not only support the asymmetrical seat, they also rise above it to hold four table tops that can be equipped with the latest generation usb-sockets. The ottoman offers users a “touch down” with high comfort with possibilities to interaction, face-to-face and digital. Dune is an oasis that comes to life when used, comments Anders Englund, Design Manager at Offecct, answering his own rhetorical question what this new furniture typology from Offecct is. About Front Front’s design often communicates a narrative to the user, a narrative about the production process and the materials specific qualities. Front consists of Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren who met while studying at Konstfack in Stockholm. They did their first project together during Stockholm Furniture Fair in 2003 and started their own
design studio after graduation. Front’s design often communicates a narrative to the user, a narrative about the production process and the materials specific qualities. Front has with its progressive design contributed to radically change the classic image of Swedish design and was awarded the world’s biggest design award
(based on the amount of money), the Torsten and Wanja Söderbergs award in 2010. For further information about Offecct, visit: www.offecct.com

Confronting Conventional Office Spaces… Century Office are a leading UK office and contract furniture supplier, with over 40 years’ experience in the industry. They provide workplace solutions and offer a tailored approach for architects, interior designers and facility managers for small offices to large corporations as well as educational facilities.
I
t seems that many organisations and its employees are still under the presumption that the longer you work at your desk, the more work you will get done, but this simply isn’t the case - the workforce and workplace have changed. Advances in technology as well as a new breed of workers and mind-set like the millennials, is a clear sign that the office space has become more open-plan compared to the 80’s boxed in cubicles! However, within recent news there has been debate as to whether or not these open plan layouts can cause hindrance to some, rather than a solution for all.
Workplaces need to furnish and design office space for and around its employees so that the office is more comfortable, flexible and supports productivity over time. Office space that is planned out in this way takes into account the needs and limitations of the people who occupy them. Steve Bays, Managing Director and Head of Product Design at Century Office comments, “It’s hard to get excited about work every morning if the office furniture is boring and giving you back pain. Also, it does not have to cost a fortune to make an office more
ergonomic and productive. It is all about knowing your office and how it works and making the most of your office space. Basically, understanding how the teams and departments work and responding to their needs. Offices have changed and are constantly changing – they are much more than just a desk and a chair. Making small modifications like switching desk legs to a sit/stand frame and picking ergonomic seating in a bright colour would make a big difference to the well-being, productivity and overall ambience in an office.” “Human Factors” are a major influence

and it is this workplace psychology that focuses on a range of topics. This includes ergonomics, workplace safety, the reduction of human error, product design, human capability, and human computer interaction. Finding out what office features best suits your work environments, whether it is fully open plan, private cubicles or a combination of both is often a good starting point. It is important to remember that the office is an extension of your brand and therefore the design should reflect this. Providing individuals with adjustable chairs and sit-stand desks, and task lights mean that employees can adjust their workspaces to meet their needs. This can help boost productivity, but also ensure employees are using furniture properly. Most reputable office furniture suppliers can provide this training as needed.
may positively affect the future of the business. Break-out areas needn’t be in another room; a table with chairs in an area of the office will suffice, or even comfortable armchairs or sofas.
Informal spaces allow for a change of scenery and a welcome excuse to step away from the desk. These areas also help to break down communication barriers, while increasing the opportunity for spontaneity. Conversations made in these areas can lead to great ideas that
Research also suggests that colour can help to increase output and activity. For instance, green and blue evoke a sense of nature as well as a calming and happy effect, while red is an intense and active colour that instantly draws attention and a sense of urgency. Yellow evokes
a sense of energy and freshness and is believed to help trigger innovation. This needn’t be a costly exercise; colour can be included within the furniture, e.g. the backs of chairs or desk screens. Alternatively, a feature wall with a block colour can instantly lift any dull interior and help boost staff thought processes and productivity. Throughout this week where there’s pockets of time free, i’m finishing off the fine details of the drawing pack which is about to be issued for pricing by the Trades. i’m part of the CPD Assessment Panel for the British institute of interior Design (BiiD), so i dash up to Shoreditch to their offices for an afternoon volunteering where we assess two interesting potential CPD providers. it’s always really nice to meet fellow BiiD members. Wednesday i’m rebranding my business to highlight the vegan design specification option, so i spend Wednesday morning working on logos with my fantastic branding and graphic design expert, Alex Borg. i liaise with two fellow interior designers who also did the VeGANDeSiGN.oRG CeRTifieD™ course. We are planning

ways to bring awareness to the cause. We send a press release to PeTA uK and Veganuary and i approach some press and bloggers. We also schedule a conference call with Deborah DiMare who is the founder of the course that originated in the States (www. vegandesign.org). it’s sounding as though we are going to be ambassadors for the course in the uK, which is wonderful news. Thursday i’ve been looking forward to today for a good while. i’m travelling to Wimborne in Dorset to take part in farrow and Ball’s professional painters workshop day. i’ve heard Joa Studholme - their international colour consultant - do her colour talk in the past and loved it. i’m a big fan of ©KiNGS eDuCATioN 2017
their clever work on colour development plus they have great environmental credentials. As attendees, we’re talked through their formulations in detail, including the high-quality ingredients used. i ask lots of questions regarding environmental credentials, VoCs, durability and longevity. My questions are answered thoroughly and i’m impressed with their efforts to hit environmental targets early and their careful sourcing process. Friday Lots of emails to catch up on after being out all day yesterday! A beautiful business card design from Alex has arrived and i love it. The new branding will go live this weekend. There’s also an email from Karen Campbell, a business mentor who i saw last week as part of Small Business Saturday. She loves the new branding direction and wants to publicise it in her Social Media, which is great news. This afternoon i’m being filmed in an interview as last week i was told i was ‘Vegan Designer of the month’ for february. i don’t love being filmed but it’s done! i just get the restaurant drawing pack finished and sent off in time to start the weekend reasonably early for once. Must dash - we’ve got friends coming round!

Dramatic, Efficient Lighting at the Iconic Oakham Castle Oakham Castle in Rutland is benefitting from a striking and energy efficient new lighting scheme, thanks to Concord. The new design, which features a number of Concord luminaires, emphasises the castle’s aesthetic qualities as well highlighting the intricate architectural features of the historic building
D
ating back to the 12th Century, Oakham Castle is one of the finest surviving examples of Norman architecture in England. Upon receiving a £2.2million Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the castle recently underwent a comprehensive restoration turning it into a first-class culture and heritage centre. The work included preserving the castle’s key features whilst adding brand new interactive displays and exhibits for guests to enjoy. As part of the refurbishment, Concord worked with M & E specialists, E P Consulting, to develop an effective lighting solution. The installation incorporated exterior and interior lighting solutions, improved facilities and an exhibition fit out to showcase the Castle and its history. The mechanical and electrical services needed to be sympathetically designed to blend in with the structure of the building, whilst improving the outside lighting. “Due to the historic nature of the project, creating the right illumination that is sympathetic with the castle’s architecture was essential,” says Robert Pitchford, Electrical Director of E P Consulting. “The new lighting scheme has helped us meet the overall goal – an efficient and sustainable solution, and offered us the perfect balance between energy efficient LED technology and a traditional look and feel. The result is a sensitive lighting upgrade to a historic and renowned site, giving significant added value to an already popular attraction.” The new design was achieved by using
a variety of luminaires to create the desired look in each space. For example, in Court No. 1, track mounted Concord Unity LED direct / indirect luminaires were installed to provide the right light levels and reveal the remarkable features of the room. Concord Beacon Muse LED luminaires have been installed in the Great Hall to provide ambient lighting and emphasise particular aspects. To create a sense of theatre and highlight the distinctive horseshoe collection in the Great Hall, a number of Concord Beacon XL spotlights in medium and wide beam options have been installed. A suitably dramatic lit environment and energy efficient design was required
with visitor safety, an important factor of the design concept. Route LED downlight luminaires were installed all over the project to provide non-maintained emergency lighting. The Sylvania SylSafe Twin Flood LED has been used as emergency lighting in the Great Hall and SylSafe emergency exist luminaires have been installed at all exists. A combination of outdoor luminaires have also been installed to highlight the castle’s exterior fascia and create an attractive lighting scene for maximum impact. Balancing Lighting, Aesthetics & Acoustics Leading Italian lighting brand Artemide have been providing iconic and functional lighting solutions for the past 50 years. Eggboard, from Artemide’s “The Acoustic Light” range provides a communicative environment in noise-sensitive working areas.
A
longside good lighting, acoustic well-being is one of the most important requirements for the work stations of today and tomorrow. Contemporary working spaces are often flexible and open-plan, encouraging interaction and dialogue in inspiring and motivating surroundings. However, the ambient noise levels created through these spaces are considerably higher than those found in a more traditional, modular, office lay-out. Optimum communication calls for a working environment in which the planning considers not only lighting, air quality and atmosphere, but also acoustics. The more sound-reflecting (“reverberative”) the surfaces are, the longer the reverberation time in a room. Studies by the Fraunhofer Institute confirm that poor acoustics are increasingly perceived as a “disruptive factor” and are thought to be one of the main causes of increasing psychological stress in offices. This is precisely where “The Acoustic Light” range from Artemide provides a solution. They combine excellent design and perfect lighting efficiency with sound-absorbing elements that are specifically tuned into the frequencies of the human voice and thus audibly improve the working climate of the room. The innovative surface structures of “The Acoustic Light” series of lamps specifically reduce oppressive noise levels. Acoustically active materials cause multiple reflections of the sound waves,
which effectively reduces their intensity. Using the Nur Acoustic, Eggboard and Silent Field lamps means that territorial islands of harmonised sound and perfect light can be created. Eggboard allows architects to solve three planning problems with just one product. With its sinusoidal, sound, absorbing surface, the lamp enriches every room and enhances the lighting, aesthetic and acoustic quality of the space. In modern, open office spaces where classic acoustic ceilings are no longer in use, Eggboard ensures the necessary ambient sound reduction.
Noise is reduced through the use of two layers of sustainably recycled polyester, helped by the unusual surface structure. The acoustic light provides excellent sound absorption values. The light distribution of the luminaire, which incorporates high-efficiency LEDs, can be adjusted in such a way that a single or double desk can be perfectly illuminated. A Great Place to Be Sitting Established over 40 years ago, Daro is the leading name for rattan and cane furniture. Their comprehensive ranges offer a vast choice for any taste and décor. James Brown, Director of Daro, and in.Design’s editor, Zoe Fryday, chat about industry trends and some of Daro’s new, stylish product ranges. James, what is the current focus for Daro? We are currently working on the 2019 Outdoor collection, focusing on using new weave types and designs that are both comfortable and practical. Developments in technology allows us to test the boundaries of what can be achieved with extruded polyethylene. Have you witnessed any major Outdoor Design trends so far this year? We are tending to see a shift to a more minimalistic look which certainly has an influence from European designs. We are, however, quite traditional in the UK and still major on weave! We are also seeing the use of wood beginning to creep into design combinations with weave. What can we expect to see throughout the rest of year? I think we can expect to see the use of more cushioning in the product as people demand increased comfort for their outdoor furniture. Be aware though that in the UK, the rules for Outdoor furniture and fire retardancy are the
same as indoor products! It is always advisable to have UK test certificates to avoid any problems. So, what types of Outdoor Design do Daro offer and for what environments? In our main Daro collection we offer a British inspired look that incorporates both dining and lounging products. We use our 40+ year experience in rattan design to ensure that our outdoor products are as comfortable as our indoor ones. We use a Dupont powder coating for all frames and German weave technology to make weave that incorporates Anti-Frost and Anti-UV for longevity and use in all climates. In addition to this we use performance outdoor fabrics in the manufacture of our soft furnishings, produced in our own UK facility which has just achieved LOFAassured (www.lofaassured.co.uk) status for Fire Regulations.
What’s new on the product front? The Barcelona range has been introduced for 2018 and offers a chunky weave. This range is both comfortable and stylish in both the traditional lounging arrangement or as a corner lounging set. We have also developed our Bourton Outdoor range in collaboration with Laura Ashley to incorporate dining for this season. What is the essence of Daro? How would you describe this in three words? Daro is synonymous with stylish craftsmanship and trusted workmanship, producing leading products that have been built on honest attributes. Talking Dirty Satisfaction! When the entrepreneur founders of 7Bone Burger Co. Matthew Mollicone and Richard Zammit approached Focus Design to help bring their restaurant brand design forward they were delighted with the challenge and joined the revolution of burger lovers! Focus are an Interior Design practice that, amongst a host of hospitality projects, deliver edgy casual dining concepts. They have experience in commercial restaurant design and have worked with some of the high street’s biggest and most successful operators. Focus know food, drink and hospitality and how these businesses need to operate. They can also deliver projects at a commercial pace which sets them apart from the competition.
F
ocus Design have created three 7Bone sites so far. The latest is in Portsmouth where the historical ground floor south wing of the Listed Prudential Building was converted into a bustling burger dining space. Focus proposed a design language of industrial, honest with a sense of nautical undertone nodding to the naval connections of the city. The proposal was to strip back and reveal the building’s texture and architecture. This suitably reflects the simplicity and raw feel of the 7Bone brand.
in.SIGHT : 33
A great project such as 7Bone always comes with a few challenges. The site is heavily listed and had never operated as a restaurant before. The services and extract were required to carefully navigate through the historic fabric and find a suitable route which had minimal impact to all floors, not to mention the tile and timber ceiling designed by Alfred Waterhouse discovered mid project. Left in its original glory as the star of the show, this feature was only uncovered once possession had been taken by 7Bone. Conservation and the design team were excited to be presented with such a great additional feature. Focus were happy to play this into the design. The bank hall continued to provide the perfect platform for the design intent with a variety of existing finishes hidden behind the fabric of the rooms, each uncovered and scraped away during the build. Glorious curved ceramic column tiling, aged mosaic floor, the Waterhouse ceiling and an incredible parquet block were all gifts from the architectural gods to blow this design into something epic. Designer, Martin Hatchett told in.Design:
34 : in.SIGHT
“We were so excited about this project when we saw the building and the unit initially. With high ceilings and the age of the building, this is already a great space so we just need to add that boost. As the project progressed, and we stripped away more, the building revealed itself. It was something you hope for when doing refurbishments of this nature but never expect. There are such incredible features that you could not reproduce on any budget. We were very lucky.” Fixtures and fittings are a basic formula of old timber and metal in a mix of finishes, paints, sourced from reclamation or salvaged but all carefully considered and layered. Lighting is almost all reclaimed ships fittings
reconditioned giving a very real sense of vintage craftsmanship. “The client, Matt has a very keen interest for nautical lighting and we researched a lot of suppliers and reclamation sites to source the right fittings. It was an extensive task but rewarding when you look at some of the beautiful fittings”, said Martin. The final edge to stand this creation away from the rest of the street scene is injected pops of colour in the upholstery and a glow of Neon suspended light features and signage throughout the restaurant. This also suits the gritty but fun that is 7Bone.
This interior space has a buzz without being full of hungry customers. Focus Design wanted to give the site a feel that it had been there for years. An institution that you want to belong to – something that would suit the heritage of the building and its longstanding position. The honesty and clever detailing finish off the experience to make this an understated cool hang out for the 7bone following, or 7Boners as they are so proudly named. It is raw, stylish and a feast for the eyes, not to mention the belly. if you haven’t tried one of their Triple- B burgers or New York style Dogs with Dirty Fries then get with it!

Inside PPG’s Global Colour Forecast Meeting Earlier this year, PPG colour experts from across the globe gathered in New York for three days with a single focus: to design the Voice of Colour story for 2019. The colour story is created using insight from a collaboration of cultures, social movements, market trends and design. By the end of the meeting, the colour specialists had discussed, debated, and decided on the future trends, which paint a thematic, worldwide colour forecast for next year.
E
very year, experts from South Asia, North America, Europe and other continents arrive at PPG’s Global Colour Forecast Meeting, bringing with them a collective knowledge and passion from which the Voice of Colour themes are born. These colour stylists represent all of PPG’s coating industries, including consumer electronics, architecture, automotive and aerospace. On the back of studying consumer behaviour, building materials and décor trends in their respective cultures and markets, the experts are able to share insights which reflect current attitudes on a global scale. This is the essence of the Voice of Colour trends: sculpting society with colour. It is a people-focused concept, exploring how consumers all around the world are thinking, feeling and adapting in a rapidly evolving market. Voice of Colour places an emphasis on giving a voice to the customer, and developing colour palettes that mirror their needs and stories. On the very first day of the Global Colour
Forecast Meeting, there is an emphasis on understanding the people, places and shifts in society that are changing the shape of the international market. Representatives from different countries and industries report on their findings, and from these, the experts begin to predict the social trends that will emerge in 2019. Once these trends have been established, colour, material and design are used to bring them to life. Four separate mood boards are created, one for each of the stories that will make
up the 2019 colour trends. Imagery and colour are pulled from magazines, materials, fan decks, leaflets and other sources that reflect consumer attitudes from around the world. As the mood boards develop, the Colour of the Year begins to emerge. It is the result of a shared knowledge and excitement that builds as the meeting progresses, recognised as the shade that underpins the four central, themed stories, and which the experts predict to be a staple for the year ahead. The 2019 trends guide will be unveiled later this year. In the UK, Voice of Colour is exclusively available from leading decorative paint brand Johnstone’s Trade. So what’s new at Craven Dunnill? Chev Wood extends application of zig-zag It is anticipated that chevron flooring is here to stay and the style will become a mainstream staple of the flooring sector. The variegated styling of the new Chev Wood range of porcelain floor tiles from Craven Dunnill creates a naturalistic and distinctive, chevron patterned design, to satisfy the surge in consumer interest for zig-zag styled floors throughout the house. Traditional, chevron layout floors are made from wood and therefore limited in application. The new Chev

Wood porcelain tiles offer a practical alternative to wood, the printed tiles being highly individual in appearance, creating the impression that no two tiles are the same. Parisienne delivers appealing statement floors The new Parisienne range of boldly patterned and geometric design floor tiles from Craven Dunnill’s Renaissance Collection ticks all the boxes. The range reflects the trend for small format tiles at 150 x 150mm and offers both fashionably retro and geometric patterns in a choice of appealing monochrome and pastel shades. Each design can be configured to create striking, larger scale patterns or interspersed with the
plain tiles for a more informal look. The collection of six patterned and four plain tile options is made from porcelain with a dense and durable, matt glaze. The specification ensures enhanced performance, including low water absorption, frost resistant and slip-resistant properties. Evolution of the Trapezoid Founded in 1974, Tonalite design, produce and sell quality interior and exterior ceramic floor and wall tiles. Tonalite’s products have been conceived in a wide range of colours and with a complementary and versatile variety of shapes and special trims.
T
onalite is a company which loves to dare, break the traditional patterns and explore new directions. Some of its collections seem to awaken the will of originality and fantasy which disappeared after many years of minimalism. The changes in style realised by Tonalite are in colours, patterns, finishings and formats. Inspired by this latest trend, the tile manufacturers have introduced the new collection, Trapez, where geometric shape gives rhythm to the composition. It is a collection thought for covering and flooring, based on the modularity of trapezoidal items 23x10 that create
unusual visual effects. To complete the composition, the Trapez tiles are available in a wide range of colours. Light, pastel colours fit with the graphic patterns perfectly. However, for those who prefers instead to stop this light mood with something more vibrant, the tiles are available in petrol blue, indigo and sage green colours to create great texture and impact. The Trapez glossy collection is available in the following colours: gesso, Polvere, Piombo, Ardesia, Pergamena, Sand, Tabacco, Trapez Indigo, Trapex Sky, Trapez Sage and Trapez ottanio. Talco, Pomice, Cemento, Lavagna, Seta,
Lino, Tufo, Trapez Indaco, Trapez Mint and Trapez Teal are matched perfectly with the Matt collection. Tonalite has always stood out for its ongoing research aimed at improving tiles’ aesthetic performance and achieving advanced technical and quality standards, offering the most demanding consumers and professionals the best solution for all applications. Pushing the Boundaries of Porcelain Design Following the international acclaim of her previous tile collections, Spanish born designer Patricia Urquiola has collaborated again with Mutina, Italian ceramic design house, to create ‘Cover’ - an innovative surface collection with cross-hatched, dotted and patterned designs, adding a fresh twist for 2018.
A
vailable in the UK exclusively from Domus, ‘Cover’ marks one of Patricia Urquiola’s first ventures with large ceramic slabs. The unique collection came about from an experimental project using the Continua Plus technology. The clay is blended with a mixture of micro-grit, a light blend that acts as a base for slightly contrasting materials, with coloured modern patterns and modules applied using silkscreen method. These may be irregular, figurative or geometric. Patricia Urquiola describes the collection as: “Large slabs with irregular patterns, with different intensity and density of colour, that are reminiscent of the variable landscape of the sky in which clouds move around continuously.” Suitable for walls and floors, the collection comprises of 11 options in each colour - White, Grey & Black; including unglazed porcelain stoneware and decorated patterned versions, and comes in three sizes: 120 x 240, 120 x 120 and 30 x 120cm (with rectified edges). The XL sized slabs limit the number of joints between tiles, allowing them to span over an extended surface space.
