Another year, and another BiiD conference is over! Almost 250 delegates attended ‘inside Knowledge: The BiiD Business success Conference,’ and some fantastic speakers, including guy Oliver and the BiiD’s President elect Charles Leon, held the audience rapt. Read all about this on p34.

Collecting some impressive air-miles is Celia Chu, the Taipei-based hospitality designer whose work appears in some of the most exciting hotels. in Week in the Life on p06 Celia’s busy week includes meeting with international clients, and travel to see projects in Bangkok, and Dalian in China.

Back in the UK, in in.Brief Clare Pascoe, who we usually associate with mid-century design, takes an industrial turn when faced with the task of creating an office in her garden from a shipping container. The results (see p24) are fantastic!

A Week In The Life Of Celia Chu Born and raised in Taipei, Celia Chu has always been immersed within the creative arts, and this fascination eventually led her to pursue further education in New York City, graduating from the Parsons School of Design.

With the desire to build an interior design practice that offered practical solutions in the form of elegance and style, in 2007 Celia established her company, Celia Chu Design, to bring an unique creative vision to life in the realm of hospitality design.

Monday After delivering my two lovely daughters to my mother’s home, my Monday starts officially! I get into the office, log into Outlook, check the emails and reply to the most urgent of them. This process gets me ready and in the mood for work. At 9:30am I have the weekly meeting with everyone in my firm, catching up with all the ongoing projects, and following up on others. We do the design idea sharing for the end of the weekly meeting as usual. Everyone can share whatever they think is interesting and inspiring, including at this meeting an exhibition of Zaha Hadid’s amazing work, an artist creating beautiful glass artworks, a movie by Wes Anderson, and the list of top 50 bars in Asia.

To me, it’s so important to find new things and keep my eyes open. You will never know where the inspiration will come up.

my team for the project in Cairo; the Intercontinental Hotel renovation. It’s my first project in the Middle East and I am very much looking forward to the mock-up guestroom review next month. After a few office meetings, I need to get ready for a dinner with a client tonight. I make the reservation at MUME, a Scandinavian style restaurant, which always surprises me with new and special dishes.

Tuesday I have a meeting with a long-standing client

this morning, regarding the Hyatt Regency Da Nang, Vietnam. They are thinking of adding an extension to the restaurant, which was designed by me several years ago. It was a wonderful experience to work on this project so I am so happy and excited to be a part of it again now.

In the afternoon, I meet with LASVIT, the cool lighting brand from Czech Republic.

We are working together on a distinctive and original lighting fixture for a high-end residence in Taipei. We have worked on a

few projects before and I do like the passion they show and the artistic touch they create.

Unsurprisingly, they surprise me with their excellent work again.

Wednesday Grab a light luggage case, put on my sunglasses and grasp my passport, I am about to get on the plane. I like to read a novel or watch a movie during the flight, it’s like a break because no email can reach me, and there’s no phone calls. After three hours, Dalian, here I am. It’s a pleasure to

10 : in.HER LIFE come here every time but especially this time because our latest completed project, DALIAN DALIAN, the specialty restaurant at the top floors of Grand Hyatt Dalian, won a top design award for ‘the best Chinese restaurant’ this year.

I am here to do an interview with the media and share the happiness with my client.

The design would not be realised with their great support. I transformed the traditional Chinese window pattern as a special element in the space, making the space very modern while also carrying the sense of local culture at the same time. I like to return to my past projects to see how they look after months or years, just like seeing an old friend. It looks just like handover day which is good to see. The restaurant is busy and the private dining rooms have been well received and are used daily. During the sunset, I stand by the window and seeing the sea turning gold. I will definitely miss being here tomorrow.

Thursday When I wake up in the hotel room, there is a moment I am not sure where I am!

But after I hear the warming greeting from the morning call, I know I am in the city of Bangkok. I took the late night flight from Dalian to Bangkok last night, and I am going to have the site inspection of the on-going project here, The Rosewood Hotel Bangkok.

We have been working on this design for about four years, and finally I can see the hotel building is growing high very fast now.

I am here to check with the building process of the benchmark guestroom and to check the site condition for the public space. The stone work in the bathroom bothers me a little bit, and I have to explain to the contractor that the standard is not what

it should be. I walk along the empty building structure with the picture in my mind of how the space will look in a year’s time. It will be a jewellery box containing the unique Thai culture. That’s my philosophy of design, to really reflect the sense of the place.

Friday I meet with the graphic designer this morning, we are doing a makeover for the

company website. It’s time to add some new vibe since the current one is almost ten years old. The discussion goes smoothly and the design is on the right track. I am happy to work with someone who shares the same taste with me.

I seize the time to work focusing on the design for my Chinese estate client before the meeting with the lighting designer, who is also a good friend of mine. To me, lighting

is very important in my work, it is just like putting on the right make-up for a special event. That’s why I always have a lighting designer in my projects, we can create something special together.

My staff and I leave the office to go to see the art festival in Taipei in the afternoon.

Through the eye of the artists, we can find so many enlightened things. I see a work by a Japanese artist, who builds unique

animal sculptures with crystal balls, shaping them in a weird but fascinating way. We move on to a roof top bar for the happy hour after the exhibition. It is a delightful moment to chat with my staff, drink sparkling wine next to the grand Taipei 101 tower, lit up with the summer breeze in the air.

The Weekend The weekend is for my family as I have my

lovely daughters, one is 3 years old and another is just turned 1 year old. We make breakfast together and watch them eat it like little monsters! Then they put on their swimsuits and can’t wait to float in the swimming pool in our backyard for the rest of the day.

Sometimes we will go to the beautiful mountain near Taipei City, to get some fresh air and take the onsen to relax. But this Sunday, I plan to visit the National Palace

Museum, where there is an exhibition of Musee d’Orsay. I love to see the mixture of the east and the west and I can stay in the museum for whole day exploring all the incredible antiques and artworks.

hen you work in a creative industry, and in a world where it takes seven seconds to make a first impression, where you work says a lot about you.

After qualifying as an Interior Designer in 2000, I quickly realised that there was a negative connotation to working from home – as if in some way it watered down your professional ability and threw you into the arena of ‘hobbyist decorators’; which is a thoroughly respected profession, but one that those who are furnished with degrees, professional qualifications, and years of experience strive to separate ourselves from.

During my London days, a large part of my business included exclusively importing a designer range of kitchens from Italy, for my private design clients. The scale of displays that come with such a territory, and the desire to present a professional front, encouraged me to establish my company (at that time Molten UK) in a studio/showroom space in Fulham.

Fast forward a decade, and we’re in the grips of recession. Molten became a casualty of the economic climate due to its reliance in

products from the Euro Zone, and Pascoe Interiors was born. Coinciding with a move out of the capital to West Sussex, the company took on a new direction focusing on mid-century contemporary interiors; the niche style that I have become synonymous with, and won several awards and accolades for.

Kitchens took a back seat, and I was finally able to explore sustainable interior design solutions within my increasingly highly desirable style genre. A farm-based business unit was the perfect solution for many years. However, lovely as it was to work in a rustic converted cow barn on a farm between the South Downs and beaches of the South Coast, as my style became more pronounced by blending commercial solutions within domestic interiors I needed to find another solution.

Additionally, part of my self-imposed sustainable design policy refers to my fee structure; hence I strive to source back to base and to strip back layers of business running costs in order to remain highly competitive.

The economic solution was to work from home, however, I was hesitant to go

26 : in.BRIEF down that route for the reasons stated above. So, while my husband and I had identified a strip of scrubland down the side of our property (within which we could barely see the fence hiding amongst the brambles), we needed to come up with a design for a stand-alone building that would represent my mid-century, urban/industrial interior design style.

After researching wooden buildings, prefabricated structures, and traditional brick builds in keeping with our Victorian house, I latched upon shipping containers – structures that I’ve always yearned after. The idea of the juxtaposition of an industrial metal box, beside a traditional double fronted Victorian house on the outskirts of a pretty Sussex village was thoroughly exciting. The more we researched it, the more excited we became.

There are many firms who offer shipping container conversions, and most who are easy to locate via a simple internet search offer design, build and install packages. I wasn’t interested in anyone else designing the space – this is a project I wanted to grab by the scruff and design myself.

After weeks obsessing about the details with research, cost analysis, material considerations and reams of designs, we settled on ‘1st Containers’ to carry out the conversion. While they aren’t the first to come up in a search, and seem little known for design and conversion work, they have an impressive, unsung back catalogue if you ask. They had the know-how, the kit and the workshop within which to create our studio; and they were more than willing to use the materials we wanted, without loading layers of costs simply for stepping laterally from the norm. Their no-nonsense, practical,

28 : in.BRIEF can-do attitude made for a pleasurable project; and the team – from back office to manufacture and installation – were faultless in their efforts and attitude. Plus, they didn’t load their prices to reflect the growing popularity of container conversions; they simply charged fairly what it cost!

The final design is a dual shipping container space, with French windows and full height side-lights along one side, and a huge pivoting picture window looking down over the driveway. The exterior has been sprayed my favourite colour – RAL5008, whilst the interior is clad in birch-faced plywood, and the flooring is Marmoleum Walton linoleum.

The lighting is a key feature of the interior.

Installed by my husband’s firm, MAP Electrical in Chichester, I sourced brushed aluminium bulk head lights and a brass midcentury pendant, which are all powered via surface-mounted metal conduit to further underscore the industrial nature of the studio.

The project wasn’t all plain sailing however.

While we were clearing the land, our neighbours knocked on the door to inform us that the boundary between our properties isn’t where the dilapidated, overgrown fence has languished for 30 years, but is instead several feet closer to our house.

This was a disaster! Suddenly we didn’t have the space to fit our – now commissioned – conversion! Upon inspection of our deeds, we kicked ourselves for not checking the archives, and instead trusting the rusty old fence; and our neighbours were hugely apologetic for not reinstating the party line following the departure of their old neighbour, to whom they loaned the land many years before.

With a large garden, there were certainly other places we could put our studio; and while we ascertained that the Hiab delivery truck/crane combo could physically reach the new location – we would have to wait until late summer when the ground was firm enough not to leave us with a churned up, ruined lawn.

Suddenly the studio didn’t feel like a cool, stand-alone location, but an alien box encroaching work life into our private space

….and I felt we were tip toeing back towards ‘working from home’ too much. But we are fortunate to have an amazing relationship with our neighbours, who offered to sell the strip of scrub land to us. So while this was a cost we hadn’t factored in, once all was considered, it was the best option in order to retain a degree of separation between our home and our studio.

Trials and tribulations aside, we have no regrets about the extra cost or stress encountered along the way. Everyone who comes to visit – friends, family, clients – love the conversion; and agree that against all

It’s difficult to pin-point my favourite aspects of the build, as it’s the overall ‘feel’ of an industrial solution within a domestic setting that I love; and every detail, choice, and selection was carefully (and obsessively) considered. From the sealed-up, original cargo doors, to the blue RAL5008 exterior and the birch ply interior, there is no aspect I don’t love. But if I had to pick out one thing to top the list, it would be the exposed conduit lighting. Expertly installed by Matt’s team, it really is an art installation of its own. Solus Ceramics were thrilled once again to collaborate with Fusion Design and Architecture, and supplied a variety of unique exciting tile ranges to the bright, bold and energetic bar. the venue, which is situated at basement level, features a vast

quantity of traditional style tiles from the opulence range. the neutral, gloss tiles from the opulence range were selected in two sizes to create a chic banded pattern and were paired with a detailed complementary dĂŠcor tile. the neutral hues of the tiles provide a wonderful canvas for the complex mood lighting that changes periodically. on the bar front, a high-end, hand-made hexagon tile in a serpentine inspired emerald colour makes this focal point of the establishment really standout.

in the male bathrooms, marble effect tiles from the palace range were used on the walls and paired with plain grey tiles from the versatile program range that were laid in a herringbone pattern. Solid grey, glass mosaics from the Glass Source range completed the space.

Another Great Conference!

On Thursday 8th June 2017, the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), hosted its sixth annual conference, entitled ‘Inside Knowledge: The BIID Business Success Conference.’

D

eveloped specifically for and by interior designers, the new conference format offered attendees real and actionable guidance, as well as strategic insights and practical ideas that interior designers can apply to their business. The event took place at 30 Euston Square, London, and was attended by nearly 250 delegates from the design industry, including BIID members, design professionals, students and media.

This year’s programme featured eight inspiring and informative talks on business success. Attendees were captivated by this year’s keynote conversation with one of the country’s most highly-regarded designers, Guy Oliver. Led by Bill Prince, Deputy Editor of GQ, this intimate conversation delivered a unique insight to Guy Oliver’s success, including how he built his impressive client portfolio covering private residences, yachts, aircraft, luxury hotels and more. The talk inspired and enthused the audience, creating a great buzz that continued throughout the rest of the day.

BIID President Elect, Charles Leon, chaired a panel discussion on how to build a great interiors brand. Leading designers and brand experts Karen Howes, co-founder of Taylor Howes, and Nick Cross, Founder of Tag Red, explored the key elements that make a great and enduring interiors brand, providing attendees with useful insights and tips to

The audience were rapt as Sophie Ashby took to the stage to deliver a fresh and honest talk on how creating her ‘internal’ and ‘external’ teams helped build the success of her business. Receiving enthusiastic feedback from attendees, Sophie is one of the design industry’s rising stars.

Past BIID President Daniel Hopwood took to the stage in the afternoon to host a discussion on the secrets of running a successful interior design business and how to stay creative. Dan chaired a lively and informative conversation which explored

Susie Rumbold closed the day with a thought-provoking panel discussion on markups and handling fees with leading industry experts Colin Jones, partner at Hewitsons solicitors and co-author of the BIID CID/14 Concise Agreement, Rachel Smart, design business consultant and strategist, and David Keirle, founder and chairman of KSS architects. Widely regarded as one of the most challenging areas of a design business to get right, the discussion brought great clarity to the complex issues and received great audience engagement as attendees asked high level questions of the panel.
