Welcome to the first issue of 2013.

i hope all of your resolutions are kept – every year i am most virtuous until the first temptation is put in my way, usually less than a week in!

We’ve a brand-new series starting this month – How i Met The Brief – each month an interior designer will walk us through one of their projects, explaining the thinking behind their designs and decisions. in the first, Clare Pascoe shows us a lovely 1950s home she dressed for a marketing campaign.

in our other features in this issue we look at some lovely kitchens and have some interesting trends comments from designers and manufacturers, and for those adding an air of entertainment to a project we see both hi-tech and traditional masterpieces.

And if you’re incorporating foliage into your projects then look no further than our indoor Plants & Living Walls feature where we examine the benefits of both real and artificial greenery.

The 2013 expo programme kicks off in January with interiors UK and The Hospitality show, both at the neC, and HOMe 2013 at earls Court, then in early February we’re heading off to the Business Design Centre in London for the surface Design show.

i hope 2013 is a happy and successful year for you!

New Products From James Latham At Surface Design Show James Latham is gearing up for the Surface Design Show in February where, as well as showcasing some of its already established premium surface products, it will unveil two exciting new surface materials for 2013 which are bound to create plenty of interest among architects and interior designers

M

anufactured by Losan, ‘Allure’ is a range of ontrend decorative products which, as well as an extensive palette of bold and vibrant colours, smoked and stained veneers and a mirror laminate, includes a stunning and contemporary real stone laminate which is a truly unique addition to the range. Allure will be distributed exclusively in the UK by James Latham. Also new for 2013 is ‘Nevamar’, a High Pressure Laminate (HPL) which boasts a unique armoured protection (ARP) technology, meaning it can stand up to more abuse than similar products. The result is a decorative product that will look newer for longer. The Latham’s stand (at 108, 110 and 112) will also feature its highly popular solid surface material, HI-MACS®, which can

be thermoformed to almost any 3D shape and allows for perfectly imperceptible joints, so even large-area installations have the appearance of one seamless application. Also on show will be the high quality, solid-wood laminated panel, Texwood, plus Synergii from Wilsonart, a premium HPL worktop. HIF (Holz in Form) Finesse, a revolution in conventional timber veneer paneling which gives dimension, depth and texture to an otherwise flat surface and offers eleven embossed MDF panels – each supplied with its own unique textured finish – will also be on show. Through 10 strategically based depots, James Latham has nationwide coverage across the UK and Ireland and is able to offer all of these products for prompt collection or delivery within 24-72 hours, depending on location.

Monday i like to get to the office really early to run through emails and plan my day. When the team arrives we have a catch up and discuss this week’s events. i then head off to a photoshoot for a project we have completed for a Georgian family home in Bayswater. The project was formerly comprised of three separate apartments that have now been joined to form one huge penthouse. When i return to the office i clear emails before heading to the gym to arrive just in time for my spinning class. Tuesday i am meeting my Hampstead client first thing. We have completely gutted this property and redesigned the entire interior, having spent the better part of a year working closely with the client to achieve her dream home. from this meeting i head to Harrods to review the furniture collection at fendi and take advantage of the venue to meet with a supplier. Because a girl LOVeS chocolate, i arrange to meet at Cafe Godiva to run through our design of the bespoke bar as well as the other joinery pieces. Taking a chance, i call an old client whose nearby property i designed some time ago. Luckily she is at home, so i pop across the road to meet with her and have a good catch up. As i leave she informs me she has kindly recommended me to a friend of hers. When i return to the office my phone beeps with a reminder that the copy is due for my monthly article for Home Owner Magazine. i clear emails and make my way home where i tap on the laptop until late.

The new client is from Moscow and is only in London for 24 hours. We have one opportunity to impress, so we have pulled out all the stops. The client is very happy with the proposal and wishes to proceed.

Palace Court penthouse’s sumptuous dining room

Thursday The day begins with a site meeting at the new offices that i have taken over a year to find. We survey the new space and i brief the team on their respective tasks. i then head off to meet my Hampstead client to source artwork and accessories. We start at Alfie’s Market and make our way along Marylebone High Street and the Kings road. My phone rings and it is a new client enquiring if we can meet the following day. i diarise the details and after a long and tiring day i’m thrilled to be having dinner with some ex-colleagues from Helen Green Design. We meet every so often at the fun and trendy electric House in Notting Hill to catch up and compare notes. We notice Kelly Hoppen at the table alongside and continue to chat long into the evening.

The stunning kitchen of the Palace Court penthouse Friday Today starts with a client meeting in Holland Park’s Addison Road. The client has procured an oversized artwork for the living room and I must advise on its placement and discuss options for a new console to be positioned below it. I take advantage of being in the area to visit the

Chelsea Harbour Design Centre to source final fabrics for the Hampstead job. On my way out I stop in at the RIBA bookshop for a browse of one of London’s best collections of design books. The pace of the studio slows down at the end of Friday and at 7.30pm I officially allow myself down time. My mobile phone buzzes on my desk

and the familiarity of the message brings a smile to my face: “downstairs...”. It’s date night (my husband’s and my ritual for the past six years). With such busy schedules, Friday night is when, for just a few hours, we stop thinking about work and enjoy a wonderful meal and a glass of wine together.

Saturday Just another day in the office! I usually make it in by 9.30am and use the day to catch up. The demands of running a business must be managed and for me this all takes place on a Saturday when the phones are quiet and there are no meetings. I review some pending PR deadlines and then collate the financial records for submission to the bookkeeper. I review the details of our website redesign, do the year-end appraisals and then spend some time on the business development strategy for 2013. At 6pm I call it a day and head home.

Sunday This morning I head out for brisk run while the world sleeps. The reward is a stunning breakfast at Graceland in Kensal Rise. I then head to Portobello Road where the market is closed but the shops are still open. I love to spend time working my way through the

bric-a-brac and vintage finds. I return home and allow myself the rest of the day off to relax and prepare for the week ahead. There is a hefty pile of design magazines that I have been meaning to read for some time. I make myself a decaf coffee and get comfortable on the sofa with the magazines.

As I flick through, I notice a new fabric range from Zoffany. It reminds me of a wallpaper I was sourcing for the new office, which in turn reminds me of the office furniture I wanted to review. I grab the lap top and start to source office chairs... the magazines get pushed aside for another day.

North West Design Centre Opens Inspirational Media Suite The new challenge of any modern interior is the true integration of design and technology. The North West Design Centre has met this challenge head on with the latest cinema room and media suite in their Manchester showroom

“P

eople want to be inspired by their interior and the launch of our new media suite helps clients visualise how this can be achieved with cutting edge technology and beautiful finishes. The original idea for this area was developed in conjunction with our technology partners Habitech, Epson and Rako. They

were all excited by the idea of having a demonstration area in the North West which would be suitable for both residential and commercial projects. The launch has been a major success and an area we are really proud of,” explains Centre Manager Denise Jones.

Let Me Entertain You With more people looking to spend their leisure time at home, designing for entertainment means a lot more than simply choosing a corner for the television!

Markson Pianos: Retro is in, repro is out

“I

n today’s hectic world, people want a space that they can relax and lose themselves in, to forget about the stresses of everyday life. Entertaining at home is the new going out, and our clients are looking at how to make their homes more enjoyable,” said Matt Wayne, Design Consultant at Finite Solutions. Home cinema systems are a natural choice, creating rooms specifically for home

entertainment purposes; featuring individual cinema seats and subtle lighting features, the cinema experience begins before you have even switched the system on! “Many clients do not have a room that they can dedicate to a home cinema but with careful planning it is possible to incorporate many of the features of a home cinema into a room that may serve another purpose such as a family room or lounge,” explained Matt. “Projector screens that emerge from

the ceiling and invisible speakers are just a few of the tools at our disposal to bring big screen entertainment into your living room. We also do a lot of multi-room systems, so all the family can enjoy different entertainment at the same time throughout the house. All the equipment can be centrally located giving you the benefit of the technology without any of the clutter.” Getting to grips with tech has never been easier. With the rise of smart phones more

in.VOGUE : 27 people are enjoying playing with technology and Finite Solutions have several clients who now control their entire home via their iPhone or iPad – from music, lighting and heating to security cameras. The increasing use of this mobile technology means clients can retain the same level of control over their properties wherever they may be in the world.

“We have seen more clients requesting voice and gesture control. This is still relatively new, but catching on fast,” said Phillip. “The launch of Siri and Kinect for Xbox have made it possible to control home technology through speech and movement.”

For 2013, forecasts Phillip, “wireless technologies will be on the rise, as well as streaming solutions. Cabling infrastructure will continue to reduce, moving away from proprietary cables and to that of a more standard approach.”

Phillip Pini, Crestron UK Ltd’s Systems Design Engineer, has also noticed the rapid increase in tablet popularity and wireless devices in the home automation arena. “This is a huge trend,” Phillip observed. “Home automation generally is increasing, with homeowners expecting more from their properties. They want to be able to select a movie or music from their favourite chair. Crestron makes this a possibility and offers the ultimate lifestyle of comfort and convenience. Adjust lights, shades, temperature and more; the possibilities are endless!”

Geoffrey Parker Games: a complete home entertainment system!

28 : in.VOGUE

Finite Solutions’ sitting room for a film buff! There is nothing like making your own entertainment, and the fun of learning traditional games like backgammon means that you’re never stuck for something to do! Geoffrey Parker Games produce beautiful products, and their craftsmanship means they are not scared of the threat of the internet market. “We have seen a sea change within the luxury market in recent years,” observed Max Q. Parker, Chairman and Designer, Geoffrey Parker Games Ltd., “with the luxury consumer in the old traditional markets

becoming far more savvy in their purchases, taking time to read reviews, investigate numerous alternatives and increasing their knowledge often far and above that imparted from the old seats of luxury; Bond Street, Rue St Honoré, Madison Avenue.” The advent of the internet, instead of destroying niche luxury businesses, is in fact revealing the talents that for many years (in Geoffrey Parker Games’ case, 54 years), have lay hidden behind global brands. “The offer of a complete bespoke service is a great attraction – the client

Low-tech – high stakes! Geoffrey Parker Games

30 : in.VOGUE

Fabulous home cinema experience from Finite Solutions gets what they want, not what a brand wants them to have, and they also feel a greater connection with the item they have had made for them,” said Max. “We see a continued growth in direct artesian purchasing just like one would seek out a vineyard for a great wine rather than purchase from a re-seller. Luxury buying these days is all about the experience, uniqueness and service and not about global glossy advertising!” Although there is no limit to how much music you can import to your home via CDs

or on-line, there’s little to beat a beautiful musical instrument – and little more rewarding than playing it yourself! “By far the majority of our domestic customers are looking to buy or hire a small black, or perhaps mahogany or walnut shiny finish upright piano,” Simon Markson, Managing Director, Markson Pianos Ltd. told us. “The current trend is for clean, unfussy, elegant, streamlined design with soft accents and contrasts. Chrome finish for the pedals and hinges look stunning, creating a classic and distinctive look and brass is

on the way out. Although often space is at a premium we notice greater tolerance of slightly larger upright pianos in the run up to 2013.” Retro is in, repro is out. The antique look is either authentic and lovingly restored, or a bespoke design that is original not pastiche. Contemporary piano design blends in and reflects rather than dominates its setting. “This is not always the case with grand pianos where they can often make more of a statement, whether it’s for a loft

Hidden screen technology from Finite Solutions apartment, atrium or reception room,” added Simon. “There is currently a strong demand for a variety of colour finishes; a revival of white, and a taste for red. Recently, we supplied a blue grand for the Savoy, a red grand for the Elgar room at the Royal Albert Hall, and a very large white one for spacious apartment. Very patriotic! Perspex is also popular. We love the challenges of working with manufacturers and designers to create bespoke designs and currently are creating a small grand piano for a New York apartment in a case that it is

more like a piece of sculpture. This becomes a test of combining aesthetics with structural restraints, the art of the possible balanced with the desirable.” Although 2013 will not see so much innovation in what is anyway a traditional and rather conservative industry, “nevertheless,” concluded Simon, “almost anything can be created for the discerning client. Hi tech has already been incorporated as an option in the modern piano, and silent and self-play systems can be retro-fitted to

most pianos. We will see more sophisticated systems interfacing with digital technology in the home, and meanwhile we welcome another proverbial black, shiny baby grand piano into our showroom!” So whilst going out to the cinema now may mean staying at home, and gathering around the piano could become a modern pass-time, home entertainment seems here to stay!

he role of the kitchen has evolved, and changes in lifestyle demand a space that works around individuals. Kitchen designers have had to reflect and compensate for this through their designs and with this in mind, the popularity of open-plan kitchens has risen dramatically. “Kitchens that incorporate a dining area, integrated seating area or that simply blend the transition between the kitchen and living space are heavily influenced by a more sociable, modern lifestyle,” explained Gabriela Gonzalez, Senior Designer at London Comprex. “Open plan kitchens allow people to communicate whilst preparing or cooking food and are perfect for entertaining guests or for parents to keep an eye on the kids while they play or do homework.” Advances in technology have also made this open plan style of living possible. ultra quiet appliances, the kitchen can blend into the living area without encroaching on your conversation. “In terms of materials,” continued Gabriela, “we are seeing a growing trend for natural elements within the kitchen. Heavily textured wood veneers alongside glossy cabinetry provide a tactile and modern aesthetic that is timeless and effortlessly chic.” Chris Reeves, Managing Director of Glotech Kitchens, agreed. “A multi-functional kitchen is what you must keep in mind if your want is a family-friendly kitchen. Creating a space that allows you to cook, entertain, watch TV or make sure the kids are doing their homework epitomises the term ‘family-friendly’. The difficulty can lie when you need quiet for doing any of these activities; if you’re trying to sort out your work emails or watch a movie, but the noise is travelling throughout the space, it can

London Comprex: Segno Class 2 be really frustrating. Equally, if you like entertaining, but want your guests to be oblivious to the mess, a separate kitchen and dining space might be more suited to you. There are everyday kitchen accidents to think about; do you want food spilled on your laptop or office documents, or would this be better suited to a closed off room?”

If you know the kitchen is going to have definite roles other than just cooking, you can think about this during the planning stages. “Island areas with raised bars can visually allow an open and free flowing space,” suggested Chris, “whilst separating and/or screening the kitchen worktop area from the rest of the room. This

segmentation of the island into two will also prevent spillages from one area reaching the other, so you can happily leave your laptop out.” Also noticing the trend for seamless integration between kitchen and living spaces is Bernard Otulakowski,

For the high-end kitchen The philosophy of a modern kitchen: A modern kitchen is full of contradictions. It must be multifunctional and have an a esthetic clean design. Often it is placed in an open environment partly functioning as a kitchen and partly as a living room/social space. Equipped with the necessary appliances, but at the same time it should take up limited space. And last but not least it must fit the user’s needs for functionality and ergonomics. By adding movement to your kitchen these contradictions can be eliminated. Movement via linear actuator technology can hide appliances not in use thereby creating clean multifunctional surfaces, such as lift kitchen tables to ergonomic correct working heights, or bring down cupboards to reach tableware. There are endless possibilities when adding electric movement.

Ripon White Gloss & Ingleton Grey from RAM Managing Director of SieMatic. “Our new IndividualDesign concept was created to allow designers to select discreet cabinetry that harmonises with the living area and is capable of turning kitchen islands into decorative pieces of furniture. Utilising flexible open shelves for the display of decorative objects can also help to create this move from one area to another.”

While different styles of cabinetry provide the opportunity for individuality, the repetition of key elements, such as the choice of work surface, help to create a sense of fluidity and continuity throughout the design. And the choice of kitchen also reflects current economic conditions.

“With continued cautious consumer spending, homeowners investing in a new kitchen are looking for longevity in a style that won’t date, can easily be adapted to fluctuating trends and is highly durable,” observed Amanda Watson, Kitchen Product Manager at K Kitchens. “Modern-day classic kitchens tick all these boxes and have recently shown a remarkable come-

n addition to the printed brochure, launched at the recent USA High Point Market, a complementary website has been launched. The website calculates a retail price in real time allowing instant budget control to the design process. The Creator concept has been in response to increasing interest from designers in customizing Jonathan Charles’ dining tables. Chief designer and CEO Jonathan Sowter collaborated with his design team to produce a tailored step-by-step guide for interior designers and retailers. The to-the-tradeonly, 9-step programme offers two different styles; Formal Traditional and Casual Country, which then branches off into six shapes, four leaf extensions, 13 bases, 24 wood finishes, and nine aprons and mouldings. Once the request is submitted to Jonathan Charles’ customer service, the approximate retail price instantly appears, followed by a drawing within 48 hours. The programme from concept to execution currently takes 14 to 15 weeks, but Jonathan Charles

hopes to shorten the lead time once new manufacturing facilities come on line in the spring of 2013. Jonathan Charles will expand The Dining Table Creator to include matching dining chairs, giving the consumer a comprehensive design experience.

The Dining Table Creator, and the full collection of 2000+ furniture and accessory designs, can be viewed at the company’s website.

You can position natural woods such as oak, beech and teak against industrial materials such as concrete, aluminum and stainless steel. You can also incorporate accents of colour to lift the scheme such as a flash of yellow on internal shelves or on a single run of units. simplicity, nothing too fussy, and I expect this to be one of the biggest influences on kitchens over the next few years.” Both reflecting and influencing the decor of the rest of the property, the kitchen will always remain the heart of the home!

There’s no need to be coy about colour! “Two-tone has become a popular choice in today’s modern kitchen,” Jim Calverley, Ram Kitchens’ Director of Kitchen Category told us. “Mixing different colours, materials and textures is a trend that has been evident in the UK kitchen furniture market for the last four to five years and links to personalisation. The use of different door finishes can also help to define the various zones in a modern open-plan kitchen space.” Popular two-tone combinations include ivory and timber, white and timber, and monochrome (black and white) - and the mixing of textures is increasing with gloss doors and wood grain-effect doors. “The two-tone kitchen trend is likely to continue for some time,” considered Jim, “and it can be applied to both classic and contemporary kitchen styles. Green Scene

Plants and flowers bring a whole new dimension to any room, adding freshness and natural decoration

B

oth homes and businesses can benefit from added greenery, and one of the ways this is introduced is by installing a living wall.

“What are the advantages of living walls?” asks Anna Roochove, Business Development Manager, Scotscape Limited. “Apart from the obvious aesthetic beauty

of a well-designed and maintained wall, the ability to incorporate branding in the plant design or even electronic equipment such as flat screen monitors or lighting, the incorporation of a living wall has health and environmental benefits too.” Plants help to purify the air, and provide a pleasant ambience for staff or customers; living wall systems are environmentally

friendly using minimal water, used externally they offer energy saving benefits to buildings, owing to their insulation properties. “Living walls offer a refreshing alternative to traditional cut flowers and pot plant combinations,” said Anna, “they use limited space and offer opportunities to ‘green’ a multitude of surfaces. Living walls offer a fresh contemporary approach to interior landscaping which is comparable in cost to traditional planting methods, they are the way forward for space-saving planting.” When Radisson Blu opened its £22m luxury 218 bedroom hotel at East Midlands Airport, it was keen to have some eye-catching and innovative features, and became the first building in the country to feature a Mobilane LivePanel Indoor system, which they installed in their reception area.

Natural air purification from Scotscape’s Biowall

The living wall has helped the building achieve the highest ever BREEAM sustainability rating for a commercial hotel in the UK. BREEAM evaluations consider a whole host of desired sustainable features and take into account not only energysaving factors but also look at the interior environment. By installing the LivePanel Indoor system in the reception area, not only is the hotel ticking all the right boxes for

46 : in.VOGUE the assessment criteria but it has also introduced a beautiful talking point. The 10m² panel contains a variety of plants which were grown off-site; taking just one day to install, the only work needed prior to its installation was the fitting of some growing lights. The wall has its own integrated irrigation system powered by a standard 240v supply and is self-contained, cutting out the need for any damp proofing behind the system. “Three years ago vertical gardening was almost unheard of in the UK,” said landscape architect Felicity Waters, Director of Garden Beet. “It has now become very popular as people are becoming aware that it is possible to purchase gardening products that allow people to grow plants on their walls – outdoors and indoors.” These systems are perfect for those who live with limited outdoor space. They

Change your view of artificial flowers

48 : in.VOGUE allow plants to grow inside and outside without taking up precious floor space, look fabulous in the kitchen, dining room or bathroom and provide a contemporary ‘wow’ factor. Garden Beet’s Minigarden comes in a variety of colours but white is the best seller as it creates a modern sleek appearance. Its design ensures water does not spill and evaporation is minimised. “One of the most important factors to consider before installing an indoor vertical

garden is light,” said Felicity. “This is particularly the case if you wish to grow sun loving herbs in the kitchen such as basil and coriander. ‘Woolly Pocket’ has just released a new indoor planter soon to be available at Garden Beet. Like Minigarden it comes in a variety of colours and simply attaches to the wall. Its clever design ensures a plant’s root system does not become pot-bound. Indoor plants can happily grow long term in a sensationally modern and sleek wall planter.”

But what if even low maintenance is too much maintenance, or your requirements go beyond seasonally available products? Artificial plants have improved enormously over recent years. “The technological revolution has gone a long way towards improving the quality of artificial flowers, however the industry is still very much reliant on the personal touch for creating realistic blooms,” said Alex Whitfield, Managing Director of Floriture.

50 : in.VOGUE “Designers are consistently striving for botanical authenticity and whilst stems and structures are mechanically moulded, each individual leaf, stamen or petal continues to be hand-painted. This attention to detail means that artificial arrangements are now highly sought after sculptural pieces of art rather than just a table decoration.” Floriture are finding that orchids are still incredibly popular, as their structural simplicity lends itself well to replication in artificial materials, and there is also a high demand for Hydrangea heads, to create big, bold, loose and natural-looking displays often using more neutral colours such as whites, creams and greens. The key with designers seems to be maintaining a consistent tone of colours throughout. “We are finding that seasonality is less important in terms of specifications,” Alex added. “There are many benefits of using artificial blooms over fresh, particularly now that quality is not an issue in terms of spotting the difference. Obvious benefits are longevity. Artificial flowers won’t wilt, lose petals or dry out meaning that they can remain bold and impactful for months on end. Artificial also means low-maintenance – no need for replacing stagnant water, trimming loose leaves or regular replacement.” New water-based products help reduce static, so displays are dust repellent and minimize allergic reactions. With minimal maintenance and the ability to create bigger, indulgent displays with more flowers and less foliage means greater impact for a one-off spend, not an annual cost.

Long-lasting blooms with Floriture’s artificial flowers “The potential for artificial flowers goes way beyond stems in a vase. We are finding that we can create feature walls, panels and sculptures as artworks in their own right,” claimed Alex. “This gives the designer much more control over their designs being able to specify arrangements as an integral part of the scheme rather than just a temporary feature or afterthought that would ultimately be replaced, perhaps by something completely different.” Artificial flowers can be used in hard to reach or restricted access areas to fill spaces

such as high-ceilings, fireplaces or recesses with minimum disruption, and the products’ durability makes them suitable for humid treatment rooms, spas, and swimming pools, or spaces with limited light or access to water such as cruise ships. “Colour is another big factor – using blooms to add colour to enhance a neutral scheme is also possible as we showed in the Shaded White Room, Winner of Sleep 2012,” concluded Alex. “We are changing the perceptions of artificial flowers!”

o.22 Fournier Street stands alone due to its 1950s architecture. Flanked by substantial Georgian terraced houses, the property was reportedly designed by Richard Siefert on a WWII bombed-out plot. Designed as a semiindustrial space, and latterly used as student accommodation, the property had fallen into a state of disrepair.

The actual brief in itself was relatively simple; to furnish and style key rooms in the property in our signature Vintage Contemporary style, for a photo shoot for the London Evening Standard feature which would kick-start a marketing campaign for the property. The budget to pay for press loans, purchases, transport, expenses and set-up, styling

This was a commercially motivated project. Upon renovation and sensing how unique this property is, the owner, textiles buyer Eleanor Jones, chose to commission a professional photo shoot by interiors photographer Alex James, to launch the sales marketing plan. Realising that there was limited draw to images of a basic and empty interior, Alex introduced Eleanor to me, to bring no.22 to life! The property was brought back to its former architectural glory by architect Rupert Wheeler of MacKenzie Wheeler. Upon completion, the refurbished house was an impressive yet basic shell, with no interior personality other than the beautifully restored stair handrail and the 1950s-themed bathrooms.

54 : in.BRIEF and photo shoot time was £7000 net plus £3500 net of office based research and design time. The lead-in time was one month, so there was a lot to get done, considering we were effectively designing ten rooms; sourcing decoration, furniture and accessories, then furnishing and styling an entire house, in much the same way as we would do for a client’s own home, over a far longer period. Thankfully the client completely trusted our ability to deliver, so while we always asked her opinion, it was rarely offered, in preference for giving us a free rein to do what we do best. With such a tight budget and short lead-in time, such trust was vital. The first time Eleanor saw the complete scheme was on the morning when Alex arrived for the shoot! The first step was to physically design the layout for each room, to ensure they had the same balance, flow and aesthetic as in all our projects. We then set about sourcing furniture to set the right tone balancing the 1950’s history with the house, with its opulent setting and the timeless contemporary lines that excellent 1950’s architecture offers. I put out requests across my extensive network of vintage furniture dealers to source the right blend of mid-century furniture. For a house in such an enviable location, it was vital to ensure the furniture had the right level of kudos through famous design makers of the mid-century era that a genuinely well-connected collector would seek to own.

The skill with designing schemes with mid-century furniture is knowing when to stop and when to use pared back and

Contemporary furniture was kindly loaned by Conran and Feather & Black with rugs by Bazaar Velvet adding a vintage contemporary linking element. Once everything had been sourced and a date selected it was a race to arrange collection of all the vintage furniture as stock continually turns over – already areas had been re-designed at the 11th hour when a key piece was sold to a collector who just couldn’t wait! Fleets of specialist removal vans darted off across the UK collecting their precious cargo. All the furniture, accessories and artwork were carefully carried into the house around the decorators brought in to hang wallpaper to add a decoration to the rooms. The living room, being a key room within the property, needed to be formal yet believable. The balance of colour wanted to make a quiet statement, so as not to detract from the architectural detailing and the roof terrace beyond, which enjoys views across graffiti-clad back yards, past the impressive church to the shiny monoliths in the City beyond. The Ercol Studio Couch was the perfect sofa, as it has a short projection, which works in the long and relatively narrow room. A pair of Model 166 armchairs face a single chair to create a sociable group. The original vintage oversized Anglepoise lamp and photographic memorabilia nod to the fictional owners’ technical appreciation of vintage, while Ian Mitchell prints nod to the industrial history of the house. BIID Launches New Private View CPD Events

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has introduced a new series of ‘Private View’ CPD events for members to provide exclusive insights into a variety of fascinating residential and commercial projects

“T

he ‘Private View’ series will allow members to gain privileged access to a range of extraordinary properties,” says Claudette Williams, Education and Events Executive at the BIID. “Each event will provide the opportunity to explore these unique, innovative or award winning homes and commercial schemes in detail and gain fresh ideas, knowledge and inspiration. We pride ourselves on creating a CPD programme that will truly benefit our members and we’re confident this new series is a valuable extension of this philosophy”. The first Private View will take place at an award winning private residence in Kensington on Thursday 10th January at 5.30pm to 7.00pm and is held in association with CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) and John Cullen Lighting. This luxury property is one of the few triple basement homes in London and features innovative use of natural and artificial light throughout. BIID Announces New CPDs For 2013 The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has unveiled two exciting Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for the first quarter of 2013; “Presentation Skills for Designers” and “The Art Market Revealed”

“P

resentation Skills for Designers” will provide designers with an understanding of the principles of face-toface communication so that they can present their ideas with clarity and conviction. Presenter Claudette Williams, owner and chief presenter at expert consultancy Creatively Speaking, will encourage designers to be less reliant upon visual stimulus when presenting by gaining an

understanding of “less is more”. Participants will be shown how to get the maximum impact from their choice of visuals and how to improve their ability to get buy-in during the presentation by taking control of the presentation process. The CPD will take place on 31st January 2013 at RIBA’s offices. In “The Art Market Revealed”, renowned art specialist Anthony Thompson will help designers navigate the seemingly impenetrable varnish of the art market. He will open doors to help them establish contacts and make best use of the extensive suppliers and material available in the constantly expanding marketplace in London. Beginning in South Kensington, designers will visit dealers, art agents and sale rooms, as well as restorers and framers, and see some of the ‘hidden art market’ only known to those on the inside. The CPD will take place on Tuesday 5th February. More information on these two exciting and informative CPDs, including details of venues, prices and locations can be found at www.biid.org.uk.

Claudette Williams of expert consultancy Creatively Speaking In addition, the BIID’s CPD Provider’s Directory offers designers a wide choice of CPD sessions in a variety of locations nationwide. To view the latest offering, please go to http://www.biid.org.uk/ cpd-providers.php?id=13

BIID Says ‘Look Beneath The Surface’ The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) has announced its support for this year’s Surface Design Show, ‘the home of innovative surfaces for architects and interior designers’; which will take place at the Business Design Centre, London, 5th to 7th February 2013

S

urface Design Show is the leading event for architects and interior designers to find innovative surface solutions for the built environment. Launched in 2004, it is the only UK show to focus solely on materials for surface design and will showcase new, cutting edge and inspiring materials. The BIID will be providing a

dedicated ‘Working Portrait’ talk as part of the event’s seminar programme and is also an Official Partner of the CPD Hub at the show. “We are pleased to support the Surface Design Show, a unique show in the design calendar,” says Dan Hopwood, CPD Director at the BIID. “Interior designers will be able to see a range of new materials and surface technologies available on the market to help them in their schemes. We also encourage them to attend the CPD Hub to find out more about surface design and improve their skills.” The CPD Hub will be a hot spot for discerning designers and architects that want to keep up-to-date with the latest issues within the sector. The programme of CPDs will also help members further their personal development by accruing CPD points.

Dan Hopwood, BIID CPD Director

Surface Design Show is a must-attend event for architects, interior designers and specifiers, looking for innovative surface solutions for the built environment. It
