uly’s issue of Care Home Magazine brings together two themes that are increasingly shaping the future of the sector: catering and nutrition, and sustainability. While they may appear distinct at first glance, both ultimately centre on quality of life, long-term thinking, and the responsibility care providers hold in creating environments where residents can truly thrive.

This month, we take the unusual step of dedicating not one, but two main features to catering and nutrition. It’s a subject that deserves the spotlight. Food in care settings is never just functional; it is deeply personal, tied to identity, culture and comfort. Our first feature explores how providers are responding to increasingly diverse dietary needs, from halal and kosher to vegetarian, vegan, and allergy and intolerance requirements, with expert insight from Caryn Straker of Nightingale Hammerson.

Our second feature turns to the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework, examining how consistency and creativity can coexist when supporting residents with dysphagia. With perspectives from Andy Cullum, The iddsi Guy and Debbie Kenchington, SLT at Askham Village, the article highlights how innovation and training can elevate texture-modified dining beyond compliance.

Sustainability also takes centre stage, not as a distant ambition but as a practical strategy. Our feature considers how care homes can reduce costs while building long-term value, demonstrating that environmental responsibility and financial resilience are increasingly aligned.

The Great British Care Cycle Relay marked the opening for Care Home Open Week 2026, covering ground in Edinburgh, Manchester, Newport, the Midlands and London.

T

he five-day event, hosted by Championing Social Care, saw groups of cyclists take on a series of one-day relays, making stops at pre-selected local care homes and providers along the way.

The aim of the Cycle Relay has long been to inspire, connect and unite, inviting experienced cyclists to combine their passion for cycling with their appreciation for the care sector and help us to promote the amazing social care work that lives at the heart of every community. Every year, we see more cyclists applying to take part in the relay, acknowledging not just the physical rewards but the huge impact that campaigns like this have on the care sector’s reputation and standing in local communities.

Each day’s ride was carefully designed and led by experienced cyclists, ensuring an enjoyable challenge for those taking part. And while some cyclists took part in a single leg of the relay, others rose to the full fiveday challenge, lining up at every start line and travelling the length and breadth of the country.

Vishal Shah, Chair of Championing Social Care and a keen cyclist himself, was one of those who could be found on the start line every day of the relay.

“The cycle relay is not only a great physical challenge, but an opportunity to bring together enthusiastic cyclists from across the sector for an incredible cause.

we’ve experienced countless displays of support and hospitality, while really showcasing our sector in all its glory.

This is one of the highlights of the year for me, and I love seeing the routes change and develop every year as we take in more of the landscape between care communities that are at the heart of society across the nation. Ending the 2026 great British Cycle Relay at Wandsworth Common Care Home, while raising a glass to the start of Care Home Open Week, was the perfect conclusion to five inspiring days.”

But it’s not all fun and physical endurance. The Great British Care Cycle Relay marks the start of Care Home Open Week; one of Championing Social Care’s most prolific annual campaigns. Running from 15th – 21st June, this year’s Care Home Open Week saw over 5,000 care homes across the UK sign up and open their doors to residents, families and visitors alike.

Following a timely World Cup theme, just some of the standout events included football challenges, 1966 World Cup screening events, accessible tournaments, inter-generational activities and countless BBQs and picnics.

The Great British Care Cycle Relay and Care Home Open Week are both annual campaigns hosted by Championing Social Care, supported by fantastic organisations from across the care sector.

Kevin Humphrys

Kevin Humphrys, CEO of Oakland Care Group, did not set out to work in social care. There was no calling, no long-held ambition. In his words, he “fell into care accidentally.” And yet, his story deserves the attention of anyone in management or leadership who has ever wondered whether their skills could be used for something more meaningful.

B

efore social care, Kevin’s career was firmly rooted in what he describes as “generic management”: banking, recruitment, HR, operations. He had a knack for fixing struggling organisations. He was good at it. But over time, something began to feel hollow.

“I reached a point where I realised, I was essentially making more money for people who already had plenty.”

So when an opportunity arose to apply those same skills within social care, the shift was profound.

Suddenly, the work had meaning. And once he made that transition, he never looked back.

A baptism of fire

In 2010, Kevin completed a successful turnaround in the Home Information Pack industry – until overnight, everything changed. The new coalition government suspended the mandatory HIP requirement on its first day in office. Kevin went into work, made the whole team redundant, including himself, turned off the lights, and walked out.

Not long after, a charity providing respite care for

unpaid family carers got in touch. Haemorrhaging money and on the brink of collapse, they asked Kevin to write a business change plan. Six weeks turned into something much bigger. At the end of the process, he was asked if he would consider applying for the role of Chief Executive to implement it.

At that point, Kevin knew nothing about social care.

What he did know was business. He applied anyway and got the job.

“That was my baptism of fire. I learned an enormous amount, very quickly.”

The charity survived. It still exists today. Something fundamental shifted during that period. For the first time in his career, he felt he was using his skills for something that genuinely mattered.

Learning the sector from the ground up

Kevin has now spent around sixteen years in social care. After his charity role, he deliberately broadened his experience – joining Allied Healthcare and taking on interim roles across acquired brain injury services, learning disabilities, autism, domiciliary care, rehabilitation, and dementia care. Along the way, he became a registered manager, operations director, regional director, and, in 2022, CEO of Oakland Care Group.

He’s picked up fellowships and qualifications, but he’s clear where the real education came from: “You can’t lead effectively in this sector without understanding what happens on the floor.”

Ask Kevin what motivates him day to day, and the answer comes without hesitation: the residents.

Everything else, regulation, funding pressures, politics, is noise.

“What matters is whether the people in our care are living well, with dignity and purpose.”

He’s also driven by transformation. Social care, in his view, is full of misaligned parts: fragmented funding, inconsistent regulation, and a public misunderstanding of what care actually is. Kevin thrives on taking something struggling and rebuilding it properly. Not quick fixes. Sustainable change.

When Kevin joined Oakland Care Group, much of its operation was still manual and paper-based. Over the past few years, that has changed dramatically. Oakland has implemented integrated technology across the organisation, including AI-assisted care planning and falls prevention systems. The aim was never innovation for its own sake.

“It was about freeing people up to do what they came into care to do.”

One story captures this well. Oakland recently introduced an AI system to support care plan composition. What once took over four hours now takes around twenty to thirty minutes. One team member was deeply sceptical at first: a self-described technophobe, wary of change. Kevin worked closely with them, showing how the system could enhance rather than replace their skill. Now, that same person is one of its strongest advocates.

“What changed was time. They’re now able to spend more of it with residents – and you can see that reflected in even more person-centred care plans.”

When asked about his proudest achievement, Kevin doesn’t point to an award or milestone. He talks about culture. “When I see practitioners advocating fiercely for the people they support – that’s the achievement.

Culture is everything.”

A life beyond the boardroom

There’s another side to Kevin that often surprises people. Alongside his role as CEO, he is an ordained priest in the Church of England, serving as Associate Vicar of St Michael & All Angels in Brighton since 2019.

For him, the two roles are deeply connected.

“Both are about people – their dignity, their struggles, their need to feel valued.” Care is hard work, Kevin is honest about that. But it offers something many jobs don’t. “You go home knowing you’ve made a difference to someone’s day – sometimes to their life.”

For those starting out, his advice is simple: “Ask questions. Stay curious. And never forget why you’re here. It’s not about the paperwork; it’s about the person in front of you.”

Cyber Protection

Cyber risk is an increasing concern for care homes, as reliance on digital systems grows. Stuart Hulbert from Brents Insurance outlines how effective risk management and cyber insurance can help protect operations, data and reputation.

W

hen people think about risks facing care homes, they often picture slips, trips, fire safety or safeguarding concerns.

Increasingly, however, cyber risk deserves a place alongside these more familiar exposures.

Modern care homes rely heavily on technology.

Resident records, medication management systems, payroll, rostering, finance platforms, and communication tools all play important roles in day-today operations. While these systems bring significant benefits, they also create new risks that need to be managed.

Cyber incidents do not always involve sophisticated hackers targeting large organisations. Many claims stem from simple yet effective tactics such as phishing emails, fraudulent payment requests, or staff inadvertently clicking on malicious links. A single mistake can result in data being compromised, funds being lost or critical systems becoming unavailable.

For care homes, the impact can extend beyond the immediate financial loss. If systems are unavailable, staff may need to revert to manual processes, increasing workload and disruption. In some cases, a cyber event can affect admissions, billing, communications, and access to important resident information.

The good news is that cyber insurance has evolved significantly in recent years. Traditional cyber policies can provide protection against costs associated with data breaches, cybercrime, ransomware incidents, regulatory investigations and liability claims. Many policies also include business interruption cover, helping organisations recover lost income and

Perhaps the most valuable development is the increasing focus on prevention rather than simply responding after an incident occurs. Many insurers now provide proactive cyber risk management services as part of their offering. These may include continuous monitoring for vulnerabilities, employee awareness training, phishing simulations and access to specialist cyber support teams. Such services can help identify potential issues before they develop into costly incidents.

As with all areas of risk management, cyber resilience is not about eliminating risk entirely. It is about taking sensible, proportionate steps to reduce the likelihood and impact of an incident. Regular staff training, strong password controls, software updates, and robust backup procedures remain among the most effective defences available.

Cyber risk is now part of the everyday operating environment for care homes, and we are aware that several Local Authorities now require Care Homes to hold Cyber (or Data Breach) Insurance.

Nutrition in Later Life As expectations around later-life care continue to evolve, nutrition is increasingly recognised as one of the most powerful tools for supporting health, independence and quality of life. White Oaks Dietitian, Valentina Giannelli, explains why senior living catering needs to move beyond simply meeting nutritional requirements towards innovation and smarter, practical digital solutions.

Why is nutrition so important as people get older?

Good nutrition plays a key role in maintaining strength, independence, energy, cognition and overall health as we age. Yet despite this, research shows that people over the age of 65 are facing ongoing challenges with both malnutrition and dehydration.

In care settings, one in two older people is at risk of malnutrition, while one in four is at risk of dehydration, simply because they don’t eat and drink well enough1.

What are the key nutrition areas?

The top priority nutrition areas for senior living are protein, hydration, calcium, fibre, and vitamin B12.

Protein needs increase significantly with age, by around 50% compared to younger adults. Protein plays a key role in supporting muscle strength, balance and independence, as well as immune function, recovery, and wound healing.

Hydration is very important as older adults tend to drink less and are prone to dehydration, which can cause UTI, falls and confusion.

Fibre is crucial for digestion and gut health, with growing evidence of the gut–brain connection, in which gut health can influence mood and cognition. Bone health remains important, and B12 becomes more relevant as absorption reduces with age.

What are the challenges?

One of the biggest challenges is that as we age, appetite decreases, and the portions people eat get smaller. For catering teams, it’s about understanding the importance of these nutrients and delivering enough of it in smaller, more palatable portions, within menus that residents enjoy. This requires strategic thinking and nutritional expertise.

The body’s thirst mechanism also becomes less sensitive with age. Residents may be clinically

COVER STORY COURTESY OF dehydrated without feeling thirsty at all. Over 65, the target is to drink 3 to 3.5 pints of fluids per day. But if thirst has declined and drinks are uninspiring, intake can easily drop well below what the body needs to function safely.

We’re also seeing rising complexity in the people supported in care homes, with an increasing rate of people living in frailty and with multiple long-term conditions. Around one in two older adults live with multiple long-term conditions, and 10% of people over 65 live with frailty, increasing up to 50% for those over 85.2 A recent report from Lakeland Dairies3 looked at what is happening in care kitchens. Almost half of the catering teams reported increased complexity in residents’ needs, and 74% were concerned about meeting them.

The big challenge is not knowing what people need, but how to deliver it so it is consumed and helps people to meet their needs. It’s not a one size fits all solution and there are a lot of considerations to make, including medications and cultural requirements.

What are the solutions?

Innovation is key at White Oaks.

We are constantly evolving our sources of nutrition and hydration. An example of this is the introduction of wild venison. Venison provides around 22g of protein per 100g, is naturally lean, rich in iron and B vitamins, and significantly lower in saturated fat than equivalent cuts of beef. Venison also works in the traditional dishes we know residents love, such as stews, pies, and lasagne. We adapt tried-and-tested concepts, improving the nutritional value of the meals people already look forward to.

For calcium, we factor in nutrient-dense desserts, such as rice pudding and cheesecake, and always have cheese and biscuits available. Fortified milk or milkshakes with skimmed powder can also provide extra protein and calcium - and they’re a source of fluid too.

When it comes to hydration, the response must be proactive rather than reactive. Structured drink rounds, variety in what is offered, and an appreciation that all fluids - including soups, juicy fruits, teas and smoothies - can meaningfully shift daily intake.

How does innovation work in the kitchen?

The increased complexity in dietary needs can be challenging for catering teams, so as menus adapt, they must also be practical and achievable in real kitchens in care settings.

Catering with Respect Food in care homes is often seen in terms of nutrition, safety and compliance. For residents, however, it also represents identity, culture and comfort. As the UK’s care population becomes more diverse, providers must move beyond standard menus.

For Caryn Straker, in- house Dietitian at Nightingale Hammerson, this is essential to delivering truly person-centred care.

More than nutrition

“In a care home environment, we often see increasing barriers to eating and drinking,” Straker explains. “As people become frailer or live with cognitive decline, familiar foods become even more important.”

When meals feel unfamiliar or do not align with cultural or religious expectations, residents are less likely to engage. This can quickly lead to reduced intake, increasing the risk of malnutrition, dehydration and declining wellbeing.

“Eating and drinking are absolutely essential to someone’s health, but also their enjoyment of life,” she says. “If the food doesn’t feel right to them, you’re creating an unnecessary barrier.”

This is where culturally appropriate catering becomes a core clinical consideration, not simply a lifestyle preference.

From compliance to integration

A common issue in care catering is neglecting religious or cultural diets, which are often treated as an afterthought. Menus are typically created first, with dietary alternatives like vegetarian, halal, or simplified options added later. Although well-meaning, this method can restrict choices and reduce both quality and nutritional balance.

“These diets should be planned as an integral part of the menu,” says Straker. “They need to provide the same variety and nutritional standards as any other meal.”

Residents on halal, kosher, vegetarian, or vegan diets should not feel limited or marginalized by inadequate options. “You should not have a situation where someone always chooses the same fallback because no other options are considered for them.”

Incorporating inclusive catering into the main menu design helps make it a routine part of daily practice, not just an exception.

Managing complexity in diverse homes

While some providers, such as Nightingale Hammerson, operate within a specific dietary framework, many care homes must manage a wider range of needs. “It can be quite challenging to accommodate various cultural and religious requirements,” explains Straker.

“Some residents need halal meals, others require kosher options, and there are vegetarian or vegan diets, along with individuals avoiding certain foods for other reasons.”

This variety adds operational complexity, but the key is structured planning rather than oversimplification.

“It’s essential to understand your residents,” she emphasizes. “Know their needs and incorporate this into your menu planning to ensure your menu caters for all your residents needs.”

There’s also room for innovation. Kitchens can develop menus that are more inclusive by default, reducing the need for multiple modifications.

Balancing authenticity, nutrition and safety Providing culturally appropriate meals requires careful balancing. Authenticity matters, but so do clinical nutrition and food safety. “At the end of the day, care homes must ensure their meals are nutritionally balanced and suitable for residents,” says Straker.

This is especially important in care settings where residents may be frail, at risk of malnutrition, or managing complex health issues. At the same time, operational factors such as staffing, budgets, and kitchen capacity must be taken into account. Without

proper planning, these competing priorities can pose challenges. “If you don’t plan ahead, problems will arise,” she explains. “Waiting until the morning to realize you need multiple alternative or texture-modified meals that weren’t planned for is too late.”

Proactive menu planning helps providers balance authenticity with safety and efficiency, rather than viewing them as conflicting goals.

Cross-contamination and clarity

Concerns about cross-contamination often act as a barrier to providing inclusive catering, especially for halal and kosher diets. Nonetheless, Straker emphasises that many of the needed principles are already part of standard professional kitchen practices. “Care home kitchens are already familiar with managing food allergies and intolerances, which involve similar controls,” she notes. “These same principles can be adapted to accommodate religious dietary needs.”

Measures like using separate equipment, designated prep areas, and clear handling procedures can effectively mitigate risks. In specialised settings, such as kosher kitchens, this is essential.

However, issues tend to stem from misunderstandings rather than system deficiencies.

“A major challenge is distinguishing between actual requirements and personal preferences,” says Straker.

Without proper communication, kitchens may unnecessarily restrict menus or implement controls that limit residents’ options. “It’s about precisely understanding individual needs and conveying that clearly to the team.”

Training, communication and consistency

Inclusive catering involves more than just kitchen processes; it depends on consistent understanding among the entire care team. “Communication is absolutely key,” emphasises Straker. “Everyone involved

must understand each resident’s requirements.” This includes recognising that dietary labels are not always clear-cut.

For instance, the meaning of “vegetarian” can differ greatly among individuals. “It’s important to ask questions and clarify details,” she notes. “Assumptions can lead to errors if not checked.” Training is also essential, especially in facilities lacking access to catering and dietetic expertise.. Although guidance and resources are increasingly available, variability still exists across the sector.

Ethical considerations and resident choice

Culturally sensitive catering also raises ethical issues, especially when residents experience cognitive decline.

“There are cases where someone who has been vegetarian all their life may no longer remember that,” explains Straker. “They might pick foods that contradict their previous beliefs.” In such situations, care teams must carefully weigh respecting the person’s past identity against their current autonomy, involving families in decision-making.

“Some families say, ‘let them choose,’ while others believe their lifelong beliefs should be maintained.”

This can be a tricky situation to manage as caterers and care teams and underscores the importance of truly person-centred care, where there is rarely a ‘right’ answer.

A marker of quality care

As care homes serve increasingly diverse populations, inclusive catering becomes a key indicator of quality. “This isn’t something that can be treated as an afterthought,” she emphasises. “It needs to be integrated into our approach to care from the very start.” Ultimately, food is more than nutrition; it reflects dignity, identity, and understanding, core elements of outstanding care.

Simple changes can make a big difference. Offering buffet-style service, interactive options such as breakfast pancake bars or dessert stations where residents can choose their own toppings, or allowing residents to customise meals by selecting sides and accompaniments can help make mealtimes feel more personal and engaging.

Make every mouthful count

When appetites are smaller, increasing portion sizes is rarely the answer. Instead, the focus should be on making every mouthful count.

Simple measures in the kitchen, such as enriching full-fat milk with dried skimmed milk powder, using vitamin-fortified ingredients in sauces and gravies, or incorporating nutrient-dense ingredients into desserts and drinks, can significantly increase calorie, protein and vitamin intake without changing the meals residents already enjoy.

Hydration should be approached similarly. Many older people do not experience thirst as readily as they once did, making dehydration a common concern. Offering a variety of drinks throughout the year, from smoothies and milkshakes to iced teas during warmer months, can provide an appealing alternative to tea, coffee and water. High-water-content foods such as fruit, soups, yoghurts and jellies can also help support hydration at mealtimes.

The dining environment matters too. A calm, welcoming space with good lighting and minimal distractions can help residents focus on their meals. For those dining in their rooms, thoughtful touches such as quality crockery, napkins and condiments can help maintain the sense of occasion.

Ultimately, supporting nutrition in care settings is about far more than meeting dietary requirements. By creating enjoyable, personalised dining experiences that stimulate appetite and encourage choice, care homes can help residents eat and drink better, supporting both wellbeing and quality of life.

Care homes today are balancing rising food costs, staffing pressures, changing resident expectations and increasingly complex dietary requirements, all while maintaining quality and compliance. In many homes, the challenge is no longer simply creating a good menu; it is creating one that can be delivered consistently, efficiently, and safely every day.

Good menu planning in care needs to go beyond nutrition alone. Menus must also work operationally.

Kitchens need systems that support allergen management, fortified diets, texture-modified meals and changing resident preferences, without creating unnecessary pressure for catering teams.

Honouring Identity Through Food

This recipe was originally created for a resident with dysphagia who needed an IDDSI Level 5 diet. Of Indian descent, she had a family that often struggled to find care settings that could recreate her beloved, culturally familiar dishes. Addressing this need sparked a broader effort: to ensure texture-modified meals do not sacrifice identity, taste, or enjoyment.

Now updated for her transition to IDDSI Level 4, the dish remains flavourful and nutritious. It provides four of the five recommended daily portions of fruits and vegetables, using nutrient-rich ingredients such as dairy and coconut. A carefully curated mix of spices adds depth while supplying plant compounds, antioxidants, and minerals. This approach also highlights a commitment to inclusivity, offering halal, vegan, dairy-free, and allergen-specific options with the same care and creativity as standard menus.

From Care Setting to Fine Dining Influence

Going beyond mere compliance involves a mindset shift. Texture-modified meals should not appear clinical or secondary; instead, they should provide a true dining experience. Collaboration with fine dining establishments has proven invaluable for this purpose.

Recipe (Makes 2 Portions) For the chicken: 3 Chicken Breasts 2 Tablespoons Butter 1 Level Tablespoon Garam Masala, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Cumin, Smoked Paprika, Turmeric, and Tomato Puree 50ml Double Cream.

For the cauliflower: 1 small cauliflower head 1 tin coconut milk For the mango: 1 Large Mango or 2 Small 1 Tablespoon of Butter, Garam Masala, and Medium Curry Powder (or Madras).

For the vegetables: 4 Large Carrots 1 Broccoli Head 100 ml Vegetable Stock Method For the chicken: 1. Fry all your spices in the butter and a little oil for 1 to 2 minutes, until you can smell the toasted fragrance, then add your tomato paste and a splash of water to halt the frying process.

2. Turn off your heat and add your chicken breasts (just sliced in half). Coat this, adding salt to taste, then cover and place in the oven at 180 °C for 15-20 minutes (until the chicken is fully cooked).

3. This can then be processed with some of the juices whilst adding double cream. (Use a thickener if required to reach the correct consistency to pass the fork drip and spoon tilt IDDSI test.)

For the cauliflower rice: 1. Quarter your cauliflower, placing it in the saucepan

with your coconut milk. Top with a cartouche (greaseproof paper lid) and cook over a medium simmer for 10-12 minutes, until fork-tender.

2. Blend the cauliflower, adding a small amount of liquid as required to reach the correct consistency (once again, use a thickening agent if needed to pass IDDSI tests).

For the mango: 1. Fry your spices in butter on a low heat for a couple of minutes until fragrant.

2. Turn off the heat and toss in your fresh mango (you can use frozen, but allow this to defrost).

3. Blend this (adding a little thickener if required to reach the correct consistency).

For the vegetables: 1. Simply braise your prepared vegetables in stock for 12-15 minutes until fork tender and puree as you normally would for a modified meal (adding stock and or thickener as required).

Plating To create the cauliflower rice look, I find it best to use a nozzle (Wilton 233 tip). Squeeze and release sharply with firm pressure very close to the plate. This can also be used to create spaghetti by applying medium pressure from a height above the plate.

I prefer moulding meat products, pre-brushing the moulds with tamari, a gluten-free, less salty version of soy sauce that gives this beautiful, chargrilled effect.

You can pipe the vegetables so they resemble the original product by cutting a small-to-medium hole in a piping bag, piping long strips for carrots, and building up small balls to create a broccoli appearance. I prefer a slightly modern approach, as depicted, as well as the smear of mango puree. I highly recommend using a good-quality thickener, as it binds moisture in your food, preventing leakage when hot-holding.

s temperatures rise across the UK, care providers are once again preparing for the challenges that warmer weather can bring.

While much of the focus is understandably on supporting residents, summer can also highlight the conditions experienced by the people delivering that care every day.

Care homes are unique working environments.

Maintained at warmer temperatures to support residents, they can become challenging workplaces during hotter periods. For care workers carrying out physically demanding roles involving long shifts, constant movement and hands-on care, these conditions can place additional strain on comfort and wellbeing.

Our research into the experiences of UK care workers highlighted several factors influencing day-to-day working life, including comfort, workplace support and uniform suitability. One of the clearest findings was the link between comfort and performance, with 58% of respondents saying the fit of their uniform affects how well they can carry out their role.

While uniforms may seem like a relatively small part of the working environment, the findings suggest they can have a meaningful impact on everyday experiences. During warmer weather, when staff may already be working in challenging conditions, issues relating to comfort and freedom of movement can become more noticeable.

For care workers, discomfort is rarely limited to a single issue. Long shifts spent moving between residents, assisting with mobility and carrying out physical tasks can become more demanding when

clothing feels restrictive or contributes to overheating.

What feels manageable during cooler months can become a greater challenge as temperatures rise.

Warmer conditions can also present challenges for employees experiencing menopause symptoms. Given that the care sector employs a predominantly female workforce, this is an important consideration for many providers. Our research found that 68% of respondents who had experienced menopause symptoms at work said their uniform did not help them cool down following a hot flush, while 63% said it did not prevent them from becoming sweaty or uncomfortable.

Comfort is not simply about clothing. It is also about understanding the realities of the role and supporting staff to perform at their best. Whether through regular feedback, reviewing workplace processes or evaluating the suitability of equipment and uniforms, small adjustments can make a significant difference to everyday working life.

As care providers continue to focus on workforce wellbeing and retention, warmer weather offers an opportunity to revisit these conversations. Frontline staff can provide insight into where improvements may be needed and the practical challenges employees face.

A Night at

Martello Manor

Ahead of opening its doors to residents, Martello Manor in Hythe offered a firsthand glimpse into Boutique Care Homes’ distinctive approach; blending hospitality, community, and culture in a thoughtfully curated pre-opening sleepover.

artello Manor, the newest addition to Boutique Care Homes’ portfolio, is set to welcome its first residents later this month in Hythe, Kent. Before the doors officially open, I was invited to take part in one of Boutique’s pre-opening sleepovers; a tradition designed to bring together staff, partners, and the local community. It’s a simple idea, but one that feels incredibly effective.

The evening began with canapés and a glass of something sparkling, giving everyone the chance to settle in and get to know one another. Representatives from local groups, including Hythe Dementia Together, were there, alongside the Boutique team. What I found particularly touching was the presence of a soon-tobe resident’s family, experiencing the home ahead of move-in. It added a very real sense of purpose to the evening.

Dinner followed in the ground-floor dining room, where we were served a three-course meal reflective of what residents can expect day-to-day. It struck me how carefully the experience had been considered: restaurant-quality service, but without any sense of formality or distance. My red pepper soup, salmon with vegetables, and hazelnut chocolate slice were all excellent, but more than that, the atmosphere felt relaxed and sociable, exactly as dining in a care setting should.

After dinner, things took a more playful turn with a treasure hunt around the home. Guided by cryptic

clues linked to both Martello Manor and the local area, we explored the building while completing a series of challenges. Some were light-hearted, like seeing how far two people could stand apart and still play catch with an egg (they weren’t hard-boiled), while others encouraged a bit more reflection, such as attempting tasks with dexterity-limiting gloves. It was a brilliant experience: engaging, genuinely fun, and cleverly designed to build empathy without ever feeling forced.

The evening continued with a quiz, before everyone gradually drifted back to the lounge. It was here that I had some of the most interesting conversations of the night. Speaking with newer members of staff, their enthusiasm for the culture at Boutique was clear. Even before residents had arrived, they spoke about feeling supported, valued, and genuinely excited for what’s ahead. It echoed conversations I’ve had previously with leadership, and it was reassuring to hear it reflected so strongly on the ground.

Eventually, we all retired to our rooms. Mine was beautifully designed, complete with an en-suite, and struck that careful balance between hotel comfort and a sense of home. It was an easy place to relax, and, importantly, to imagine living.

Spending the night at Martello Manor didn’t just showcase a new building; it offered a genuine insight into the thinking behind it. I’m already looking forward to returning to see the home come to life once residents have settled in.
