W

hile the latest ONS figures reveal overall retail sales are returning to prepandemic levels, it’s sadly a different story for the fashion sector. In July, the nation’s spend on clothing and footwear was still 25.7 per cent lower than it was before the lockdown. But with the government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme encouraging consumers to get out of the house in August, experts are hopeful that it inspired fashion sales in the process. Read more in our Fashion Fix section, starting on page 15.

E-commerce has been a lifeline for many retailers during the pandemic.

However, sustainability advocates are warning that the rise in online sales comes with a cost to the planet.

As shoppers opt to have products delivered conveniently to their front doors, their orders are being packaged in cardboard and then transported by gas-guzzling vans, planes and ships.

Indies can offer increasingly conscious shoppers a greener alternative by promoting shopping local and offering the option to click-and-collect.

ew virtual showroom Boutique Runway is now live offering buyers free access to leading SS21 collections. Independent retailers can now view the latest designs from around 50 labels via Boutiquemagazine.co.uk, which span several sectors including womenswear, menswear, accessories, footwear and sustainable fashion.

Once registered, buyers can browse through look books and individual garment images, watch pre-recorded video presentations of the collections and also set up a live personal buying appointment with reps and agents.

In the planning since the beginning of lockdown, Boutique Runway offers a feasible alternative to visiting the industry’s major trade shows and showrooms. Restrictions on public gatherings following the outbreak of Covid-19 have forced fashion brands to reinvent the way they do business. Virtual showrooms offer a range of benefits for both buyers and brands – from increased productivity to reducing business overheads. Meanwhile, online buying is also helping to reduce carbon emissions and the fashion industry’s environmental footprint, which is becoming increasingly important to consumers.

“The coronavirus crisis has made

travelling more difficult while many industry events have been cancelled altogether,” says Boutique magazine publisher Julie Neill. “Boutique Runway means brands and buyers can connect easily online in one safe and convenient space. We’ve tried to make the site as user-friendly as possible so it is accessible for all. The result is a great buying experience where indies can select key pieces from their favourite brands – all from the comfort of their computer, smartphone or tablet.”

Neill adds that virtual showrooms are not set to replace real-life appointments and trade shows, but offer a great alternative for brands and buyers, particularly during the pandemic.

BCTF announces second edition of virtual trade show Following the success of its first online trade show in June, the British Craft Trade Fair (BCTF) is hosting a second interactive virtual event on 20 - 22 September.

The debut event aimed to recreate the buzz of a physical trade show and was attended by 600 buyers. It was initially created following the cancellation of the show’s spring edition, which was due to take place at the Yorkshire Event Centre in April.

As an alternative, buyers were able to connect with 600 makers online, with an option to view images, videos and catalogues. There was also a hangout chat room for exhibitors and customers as well as an online seminar room.

Organisers say the second instalment will include new features that will enrich the experience even

further: “Covid-19 has set new challenges for this growing industry, but with some forward thinking we aim to keep supporting those that place their faith in us,” says Margeret Bunn. “Since lockdown began all 2020 exhibitions were either postponed or cancelled, so we quickly made the decision to hold an online interactive exhibition as nonessential shops began to open again.

“Because the first event went so well, we have decided to put on a second edition in September. This is at a

time we feel buyers will be more than ready to start stocking up for what is predicted to be a bumper Christmas trading period.”

Newquay lifestyle indie Roo’s Beach launches own collection of casual basics and raffia bags Following the store’s success during lockdown, lifestyle indie Roo’s Beach in Cornwall is launching its own label. R Goods is its first venture into branded clothing and accessories and its debut line includes casual basics and hand-crocheted raffia bags.

In line with the boutique’s commitment to the environment, the collection is made from sustainablysourced materials such as organic cotton and recycled polyester. Each PETA-certified piece is assembled and hand-finished in Portugal by a team of talented craftspeople working to Fair Trade standards.

Founder Roo Cross comments: “We are beyond excited to be launching R Goods. It’s a venture I’ve always wanted to try and there’s already a big buzz surrounding it from both staff and customers. Overall retail sales return to prepandemic levels while clothing remains hardest hit category

Retail sales in the UK hit prepandemic levels in July, reveal the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Overall sales rose by 3.6 per cent between June and July – climbing 3 per cent above February’s spend. However, while clothing sales grew by 11.9 per cent, fashion retail remained the hardest hit category, with sales still 25.7 per cent lower than they were before the lockdown.

Experts warn there could be another fall in retail sales as we enter the final quarter of 2020. Will Broome, CEO and founder of retail technology app Ubamarket, comments: “The ONS figures are fantastic to see as more

people feel more confident about venturing to the high street. But with the ‘Covid recession’ hitting, retailers do need to be prepared for another potential dip in sales. This has been one of the most turbulent times in the history of the high street. Retailers would do well to think of alternatives to drive sales while maintaining the safety and confidence of their clientele.”

Numerous high street retailers are still feeling the aftershock of the pandemic and enforced store closures.

Marks and Spencer has announced plans to cut 7,000 jobs over the next three months while John Lewis will lose 1,3000 employees.

Free bike hub now open on London’s Carnaby Street Shaftesbury has opened a free bike hub on Carnaby Street to make it easier for shoppers to cycle into Central London. The hub operates with an open door policy and has availability for 50 bicycles in fitted double-stacked racks. It hopes the move will attract additional footfall to independent retailers across London’s West End. Samantha Bain-Mollison, director of retail, comments: “We are delighted that more customers are beginning to return to the West End. We have installed the Bike Hub as 18 | boutique. | september 2020

a way of helping those wanting to travel into town by bike. Visitors to Carnaby can still expect a great experience and the Eat Out To Help Out campaign is certainly helping our local restaurants.”

British footwear brand Leather and Cotton prepares for international growth

British footwear brand Leather and Cotton is experiencing international success after securing stockists in Dubai and the US. Londonbased founder Eze Nwaka designs its collections, which are then manufactured in Portugal.

After facing numerous financial set backs, the founder describes how he found four investors to help him launch the brand in 2019: “I’ve faced so many obstacles from obtaining finance to working double shifts and constantly having to prove myself in the industry,” he says. “I had to get out there on my own to present my case, crowd fund, and use my own salary. I even had to borrow money from the high street with a 50 per cent interest.

Luckily, I found four people that believed in me and invested in my business so that I could make my vision become a reality.”

The entrepreneur has also received guidance from the Department for International Trade (DIT), receiving funding so he could present his collection at an exhibition in New York at the beginning of this year.

As one of only a few black-owned brands in the British footwear industry, Nwaka hopes to become a leader in the sector and inspire other black designers in the process.

ith online marketplaces such as Farfetch and Etsy helping boutiques to sell their goods to people from across the globe, shoppers are no longer put off by the prospect of ordering fashion from another country. In fact, most people just want to find the product they are looking for, regardless of where it is coming from.

This breaking down of traditional shopping borders has created a big opportunity for businesses, making it easier for them to expand to new global markets. And thanks to new technology, small and large companies alike can now accept and reconcile payments across borders with ease.

This has traditionally been pretty complicated since cross-border payments typically require a myriad of third-parties, including different acquirers in each market. However, acquiring can now be optimised to improve conversion rates without adding more complexity to your business.

What is an acquirer?

An acquirer is a bank that processes credit and debit card payments on behalf of a business. It sends purchase authorisation requests via card networks (like Visa and Mastercard) to the customer’s bank. It then either brings you the money or tells you why the request has been declined.

enough, when it comes to processing cross-border payments, it becomes a little more complicated.

When accepting payments across borders, you have some choices as a retailer. You can choose a cross-border approach where a central entity in one country accepts payments from cards in multiple countries using a single acquirer. Or you can take a local acquiring approach where your entities in individual countries have a card acceptance contract with a local acquirer, or an international acquirer with the relevant domestic licenses.

To help inform that decision, here are some key elements that must be considered…

Cross-border vs local acquiring

Locally processed transactions tend to generate higher authorisation rates than cross-border transactions.

However, as it requires a separate acquirer in each market, you’ll need separate contracts, service level agreements, functionalities, reporting formats and data elements.

Suddenly reconciliation is becoming complicated. On top of this you need to consider local payment methods and payment channels. You could attempt to tackle this alone but it can be time-consuming and expensive.

Thankfully, there’s a better way.

The best solution is to have a single partner with local acquiring licenses in all of the markets in which you

Start looking at imaginative ideas to counter lower trading over Christmas, smaller basket size, fewer in-store customers as well as ways of adding value to customer spend. Can you develop new methods of trading with other local retailers, or collaborating with a UK-wide network of complementary retailers online?

Marginal gains

By looking closely at every single aspect of your business, assessing where you can improve it, shave cost, add value to increase spend, both on the supply side and the retail side, you have the ability to increase performance across the board. Just because one area might only give you a 2-3 per cent improvement, don’t ignore it. By the time you have implemented five or six of these marginal gains, they soon add up to 10 per cent or more.

Include your team

Many business owners feel they need to have all the answers on innovative ideas. That’s wasting one of your best resources – your team. Brief them

clearly about how the company needs to think of new ideas and different approaches to trading, then welcome all new ideas as they come and develop a strategy to implement those that have merit.

Use an MVP model

Take a leaf out of the tech ‘try fast, fail fast’ model. They come up with an idea, develop it to a minimum viable product (MVP) level (the simplest version of what it can be) to trial. If it has potential, then they spend more time and energy on it. If not, they bin it. Don’t think you have to innovate big. Try a small test version of your new idea to see the potential. If it looks good, focus more resources on it. If not, put it in the bin.

Try all of the above or just one or two, but let’s be clear: failing to innovate, particularly in the current climate, is not an option.

ashion buying has always been a complex task. But in the age of Covid, getting hold of the right stock has become even trickier for boutique owners.

With many supply chains severely interrupted and some businesses on the verge of collapse, fashion indies now have the added worry of whether the right products will reach their stores at the right time.

Currently, there is some uncertainty about orders placed at the beginning of the year for the AW20 season. Some retailers cancelled much of what they originally planned to carry at the start of the lockdown, while others are waiting with anticipation to see if their full orders make it to their 54 | boutique. | september 2020

stores. Much-loved brands could go into administration before the season ends while others might not be able to deliver their full collections.

Some indies are planning to order more products in-season than they would have done pre-pandemic. There are many benefits to buying this way including versatility, guaranteed stock, immediate deliveries and being able to react to the weather and consumer demand. Short order buying also means paying for stock as you go along, which can help with managing the business’s cash flow.

But it’s not always easy to find suitable brands that offer in-season collections. And with most major trade shows now cancelled for the

rest of the year and recommendations against non-essential travel, finding new brands and stock to buy in the middle of the season is even more problematic for retailers.

Digitalisation of the wholesale model is offering a much-needed alternative for boutique owners and brands. Thanks to a new wave of B2B marketplaces such as TradeGala (Tradegala.com) it is now possible for buyers to hunt out new products and place orders from the safety of their computer, tablet or smartphone.

Many buyers are already used to scouring for new brands online via social media platforms such as Instagram. TradeGala takes it one step further by allowing buyers to browse

make a small trial order to test the brand’s viability with their customer base with very little risk.

For brands, TradeGala offers greater visibility and access to new international markets and the latest technologies with minimal commitment. Smaller, independent brands are able to take their first steps into the wholesale market, which may have previously seemed too daunting.

The fashion wholesale world will probably never be fully digitialised given the tactile nature of buying.

However, as the country gets to grips with living through a pandemic, TradeGala offers a great way for retailers to access stock safety, conveniently and cost effectively. This year has been difficult for so many reasons, but buying great stock for your store has never been easier.

This month Jenna Barnes, owner of Lancashire lingerie boutique Raine and Bea, reveals the changes she’s making to her strategy for 2020 and beyond‌ september 2020 | boutique. | 57

“Owning a lingerie boutique is something I’ve wanted to do since my early twenties” Jenna Barnes is the owner of Lancashire-Based Lingerie Brand and Boutique raine and Bea What is your career background?

I started out sewing karate suits, trampolines and dolls prams in factories around Manchester. I then began working on a fashion production line in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, eventually becoming the company’s head of design. In 1999 I started working in a womenswear design room sewing samples and working alongside designers for Next, Shop Direct, Jasper Conran, Maria Grachvogel plus many others. In 2000 I sewed the infamous green satin hot pants worn by Victoria Beckham for the Maria Grachvogel fashion show.

Why did you want to own a lingerie boutique?

Owning a lingerie boutique is something I’ve wanted to do since my early twenties, when I spent months searching for my perfect bridal lingerie and couldn’t find anything suitable. I’d always envisaged a tiny boutique with high-end lingerie!

What inspired the Raine and Bea brand?

It was working backstage for Celine Dion in 2009 and creating stage costumes for Cabaret when it starred Will Young and Michelle Ryan. I still work with Cabaret and I created some of the costumes for Louise Redknapp and John Partridge. I love the hustle and bustle of backstage and my collections are theatrically inspired.

I started selling the collection online and then moved into bricks-andmortar in 2018.

Why did you choose Clitheroe for the boutique’s location?

The area is thriving with independent 58 | boutique. | septemBer 2020

shops. My husband and I got married in the Ribble Valley in 2003 and it inspired us to move up here from Manchester. It’s an affluent area and Clitheroe is very much the heart of it.

I had my eye on the shop since I first saw it in 2005 when it was a dance costume shop.

How would you describe the interior of Raine and Bea boutique and what inspired its design?

I’ve always had a passion for Art

Deco after my husband and I had our honeymoon on the Venice Simplon Orient Express - the smell of the wood and brass polish was heavenly. This experience was a huge inspiration for the interior design of the boutique, which is filled with antique furniture, brass rails and a wall of gold mirrored tiles inspired by the Golden Ballroom in the film The Shining. A friend of mine who works in the retail and consultancy sector described the boutique as his “favourite box of chocolates.”

SHOP TALK The shop is described as ‘the smallest lingerie boutique in Britain.’ How big is it?

It measures 2 metres by 3 metres downstairs and 1.3 metres by 2.4 metres upstairs. There’s also a tiny wooden staircase that measures 18.5 inches across. It wasn’t until we were renovating that we realised just how small it was and researched the smallest shops in Britain along with other lingerie boutiques.

What kind of brands do you carry?

Alongside my own range, I also stock high-end luxury brands that specialise in elegant and seductive collections. I started by choosing small independent brands that are designed and manufactured in the UK, as this complements the boutique’s ethos.

Labels include Something Wicked, Studio Pia and Katherine Hamilton.

What are your best selling styles?

Our best sellers are styles that would be perfect for a romantic weekend away along with bridal lingerie or pieces ideal for the honeymoon.

Who is your target customer and who visits the store?

Our target customers are women in their mid-20s to 40s, but we have teenage girls looking to be fitted for a well-made bra as well as ladies in their 70s who love silk lingerie. We have a broad range of ages buying from the boutique.

What do you offer as a service and experience that no other store does?

If a customer has a favourite piece of lingerie that has been damaged, we can repair it for them. We also hold in-store events to coincide with Valentine’s Day and Christmas alongside other events happening in the town. We also offer a bespoke bridal service where brides can have the perfect fitting lingerie designed and made by myself to compliment their wedding gown.

How has the coronavirus crisis affected your brand and boutique?

Things were a little slow to start with but my regular customers were soon confident to buy again. I had kind of lost my way with my brand as I was putting all of my energy into the new boutique and finding the right lingerie brands to stock. Lockdown has given me plenty of time to reflect on what I would like for the future of Raine and Bea; it has been extremely good for me to get my design head back on.

What sort of challenges do you face selling lingerie online?

I’ve always had a website for the brand but doing bra fittings was obviously a challenge. But, thanks to the lockdown, I was introduced to Zoom, which meant I could offer virtual bra fittings. I want all of my customers to be 100 per cent happy with their purchase and sometimes this can be difficult if you’re not in the shop, handling the lingerie.

Did you change your strategy over the lockdown? What measures do you currently have in place now the boutique is open again?

We offered a home delivery service and click-and-collect, which was very popular. Customers would order online and get in touch to organise a day to pick up their lingerie. We still offer a bra fitting service while wearing face coverings and gloves; we give advice of the fit from a distance and can fit at arms length if needed.

We want our customers to know their safety is our first priority.

How supportive have your suppliers been during this uncertain period?

Our suppliers have been amazing!

They have allowed extra time with payments and given extra options of flexibility for ordering new stock. I didn’t want my suppliers to suffer so I didn’t cancel any orders and paid as soon as I was able to.

What is your main focus for the rest of 2020?

I have my new collections designed ready for manufacturing and I’m really excited about doing a photo shoot - it’s been a while. I have recently enlisted CiCi PR to help us with our press and I’m curious to see where that can take Raine and Bea.

What are your plans for the business for the long-term future?

I would like to open more boutiques in places like London, Edinburgh and York. I’d also like to see my brand stocked in independent boutiques and luxurious department stores around the world. I wouldn’t want Raine and Bea to be about just lingerie - the ideas I have for the brand and business are endless. septemBer 2020 | boutique. | 59

s the need to address climate change becomes more urgent, fashion is making a sizeable contribution - especially since the recent rise in e-commerce sales.

As well as choosing more sustainable brands for their stores, retailers can minimise their environmental impact by promoting click-and-collect over home delivery, reducing return rates, opting for recycled packaging and using eco-friendly couriers.

“In 2018, research reveals that the fashion sector was responsible for around 2.1 million metric tons of greenhouse-gas-emissions (GHG).

To put that into context, the industry emits about the same quantity of GHGs per year as the entire economies of France, Germany and the UK combined.

“Despite recent efforts to reduce its impact, fashion would need to cut its GHG emissions to 1.1 billion metric tons of C02 equivalent by 2030 to meet the targets set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. However, one of the challenges the industry faces in reducing its GHG footprint especially since the Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown - is the shift towards e-commerce.

“Increased use of sustainable transport could deliver a 7 per cent emissions saving, which assumes 90 per cent electrification of B2C transport supported by improvements in battery technology. There has been a 20 per cent increase in packaging usage since the lockdown. So improved packaging, made using less materials that have also been recycled, could deliver 5 million tons of GHG 60 | boutique. | septeMBer 2020

emissions savings.

“A major saving could also be achieved by minimising customer returns. This alone could deliver 12 million tons of GHG emissions savings, assuming a reduction of 35 per cent to 15 per cent. This could be met through a combination of technological improvements on more accurate sizing and fit along with educating consumers to reduce purchasing with an intent to return. Retailers could even start making it less convenient to send products back. Zalando began researching and trialling this concept last year.

“Elsewhere, the increasing rise and demand for fast fashion could be finally taking a turn with an increase in fashion rentals, recommerce, repair and refurbishment.

By 2030, Harvard Business Review predicts that one in five garments will be traded this way - saving 143 million tons of GHG per annum. Increased recycling would also reduce landfill and incineration, moving the industry towards a closed-loop recycling operating model.

“Many shoppers are drowning in excess packaging and don’t give a fleeting thought that Amazon emits nearly as much CO2 as a small country. Historically, consumers were prepared to wait for their products; now they want next day – or same day – delivery to the location of their choice. That means items get moved in smaller and smaller quantities.

“Free delivery is a selling point for many retailers, but it’s not free in the sense of what it costs the business and environment. The upward trajectory of people buying clothing with the intention of returning much of their order also results in the use of more packaging, mileage and fuel.

Consumers are not being penalised financially for shopping in this way, so what can retailers do to help reduce fashion’s carbon footprint?

Encouraging shoppers to visit the store by offering a free click-andcollect service is a good place to start. Meanwhile, retailers could also consider using recycled packaging and couriers with sustainable transport if they’re really serious about minimising their store’s environmental impact.”
