ctober is traditionally the time when retailers begin counting down to Christmas. But as we’ve already learned, there’s nothing usual about 2020. As Covid restrictions tighten once more, we are potentially heading towards a very different party season this year. For fashion retailers, the season’s uncertainty presents yet another conundrum: will shoppers want partywear this Christmas? We know that loungewear sales boomed in the last lockdown, so it’s entirely possible that the category will continue to shine. However, as we know, Covid restrictions can change overnight. So fashion retailers should be prepared to pivot at the last minute with products that cater for demand. With this in mind, our Christmas fashion pages this year combine both partywear and cosy stay-at-home wear so you can make sure you have all bases covered. Whether they want to get dressed up for a Zoom party or look chic in some silk pyjamas, we’ve got some great short order inspiration for your rails starting on page 21. Elsewhere, we’ve collated some great gift options on our Fashion Extras pages (34-35). Although some shoppers will have less to spend this year, many will still be looking for those all-important presents. Make

Winter Economy Plan welcomed by retail sector but experts call on government for more support
C
hancellor Rishi Sunak unveiled the government’s latest emergency pandemic rescue plan last month after cancelling the Autumn Budget. The Winter Economy Plan includes a range of new measures to help workers and businesses affected by coronavirus restrictions, including a Job Support Scheme to replace furlough, help for self-employed workers, business loans and VAT cuts for the leisure sector. The term of the Bounce Back Loans which were taken out by many independent retailers is being extended from six years to 10 - cutting each monthly repayment almost in half. Businesses that are struggling can make interest-only payments as part of the Pay As You Grow scheme, while those in serious difficulty can suspend repayments for up to six months. Meanwhile, the government has also introduced the Job Support
Scheme to help employers with viable businesses keep their staff. Starting from 1 November, employees will need to work a minimum of 33 per cent of their usual hours. For every hour not worked the employer and the government will each pay one third of the employee’s usual pay, with the state contribution capped at £697.92 per month. The scheme will run for six months and is open to all small and medium-sized businesses. The 5 per cent reduction in VAT for the hospitality and tourism industry has also been extended until the end of March next year. While many of the measures have been welcomed by retailers and business owners, some finance experts are calling on the government and local authorities to offer more help to indies so they can sell online. Mark Hart, partner at tax and advisory firm Blick Rothenberg,
comments: “There is growing evidence that the pandemic is changing consumer habits and retailers are aware of the need to pivot their offering online. However, smaller businesses are often at a disadvantage when it comes to transforming their businesses and they need help from both government and local authorities.” He adds: “The government needs to provide further support to small businesses by giving them a grant to help invest in an online sales platform so that they can continue to serve their customers in the key Christmas shopping period despite lower footfall in the stores. This should be supplemented by advisory support at the local authority level to provide access to regional expertise further supporting local economies. This will then enable businesses to grow their way out of the pandemic.” october 2020 | boutique. | 9

Cocorose London launches silk face coverings for wedding market As restrictions on weddings tighten following the government’s latest Covid rules, Cocorose London has reported rising sales of its recently launched silk face masks. The premium masks, which come in traditional bridal white as well as two shades of pink, light blue, peach and gold, are perfect for brides and bridesmaids. The range also includes unisex options including grey, black and khaki green that are already a popular choice for grooms and guests. Each silk mask features a cotton interior and internal pocket for adding an optional filter. Meanwhile, it comes

Boutique Star Awards postponed until 2021
Data reveals opportunities for retailers to thrive in today’s ‘new normal Sixty per cent of shoppers have modified their spending to focus on essentials such as food, reveals a new study of 5,000 global consumers. Findings in the third annual Selligent Global Connected Consumer Index show that 75 per cent of people around the world are living on reduced pay or redundancy, which is having a detriment affect on their disposable income. Its data also shows opportunities for retailers to cater to the ‘new normal’ of consumerism. Staying at home is a long-term expectation for most, with 58 per cent of people prepared for a future of remote work, and 56 per cent expecting to make new purchases to reflect the shift. People are buying more frequently, with 36 per cent shopping online weekly, up from 28 percent before the pandemic. When it comes to interactions with brands, 76 per cent expect real-time email or mobile 10 | boutique. | OctOber 2020

updates, while 81 percent value flexibility in returns or cancellations. “Understanding how drastically consumers have changed since the start of the pandemic will position marketers to better anticipate and serve the individual needs of their customers moving forward,” says Karthik Kripapuri, CEO at Selligent. “It’s clear that listening to customers more closely, frequently looking for opportunities to deliver customerfirst experiences, and developing programs that reward buyers for their loyalty and advocacy will support an organisation’s ability to not only survive today’s challenging environment, but thrive in it.”
Due to restrictions on public gatherings, the next Boutique Star Awards will now take place in 2021. Around 100 industry insiders attended an informal ceremony last October at The Deck inside London’s iconic National Theatre for its first celebratory winners’ party. Entries already submitted this year will be carried over to spring, when the judging process will resume. Publisher Julie Neill says: “It was a difficult yet necessary decision to postpone this year’s awards. We launched the event to celebrate this amazing industry and it didn’t seem right to go ahead without being able to hold a winners’ party. But we hope to be back bigger than ever next year and with an event that will be remembered for years to come.” The Boutique Star Awards competition first launched last year as a celebration of independent fashion retailers and their suppliers. Accolades were awarded to the likes of Young Ideas in Derbyshire, Haygen in Islington and Tillets in Yorkshire as well as Capri Clothing, Joanna Edwards Agency and James Lakeland.

Fashion retailers offering free online delivery to tempt shoppers Fashion retailers are introducing a range of new online services such as free delivery in a bid to lure shoppers, reveals a new study. Research from digital solutions firm Brightpearl. com also reveals that 44 per cent of fashion retailers are looking to offer free delivery by 2021. Meanwhile, more than a third (34 per cent) plan to offer free returns before the end of the year. Fashion retailers are also racing to offer click-and-collect for online orders, with a quarter surveyed (25 per cent) planning to launch a new service within six months. “It’s important to address convenience in the last mile of the customer journey,” says CEO Derek O’Carroll. “Though absorbing the costs of both delivery and returns is not without risk for retailers, especially those operating on fine margins in the current climate, it could also be an effective way to expand their customer base.” However, experts warn than

retailers shouldn’t offer customers options they can’t fully support, as this will have a detriment impact on returning shoppers. “It’s admirable that so many brands are offering new services to benefit customers, but one of the most damaging things they can do is promise a service that they don’t have the capability to deliver,” says O’Carroll. “Before thinking of introducing new services to woo customers, retailers must ensure they have the right infrastructure in place to deliver an optimal shopping experience at all ends of the buying journey.”
Buy-now pay-later schemes fuelling unmanageable debt, reveals research New findings from Money.co.uk reveals that shoppers aged between 18 to 24 years old owe a third more (£225 each) to Klarna-like buy-now pay-later schemes (BNPL) than the average UK shopper (£176). The Shop Now Stress Later Study also analysed how many times BNPL is mentioned during the online journey for 10 fast fashion brands, with Nasty Gal, Boohoo and Pretty Little Things topping the list. Debt advice charity StepChange warns that BNPL schemes are encouraging young consumers to spend more than they can afford. Shoppers aged 18-24 are more than 12 | boutique. | OctOber 2020
twice as likely to use a payment platform (52 per cent) than going into their overdraft (20 per cent), but those aged between 25 and 34 are the biggest BNPL users. Almost a third of UK shoppers cite social media as a contributing factor (29 per cent) in their decision to use BNPL, while two thirds (55 per cent) of those aged between 18 and 34 admit to buying with the intention of returning. Under-25s made up 14 per cent of those seeking help from the charity Stepchange in 2018, with an average outstanding debt of more than £6,000

Leading independent headwear brand KuSan offers bright winter accessories with a planet-friendly focus. Designed in London and handmade in Nepal, its New Zealand wool hats and accessories are stylish, practical and conscious. This year sees the brand celebrating its 20-year anniversary and it has announced that the lining inside all of its new products will be manufactured using recycled polyester fleece made from plastic bottles. Recycled polyester is almost the same as virgin polyester in terms of quality, but its production requires 59 per cent less energy compared to virgin polyester. The brand calculates this change means it will be able to save around 236,000 from entering landfill and oceans every year. Meanwhile, KuSan is committed to paying its producers fair wages and ensuring they work within safe and empowering environments. For these reasons, shoppers can feel warm inside and out while wearing its range of bright and cheerful winter accessories. CONTACT: Tel: 0208 211 9960 Kusan.co.uk

Christmas countdown
9 ways to plan ahead now to make the most of this year’s very unusual festive season
A
s Britons prepare to potentially forego many of their usual festive traditions this year, bricksand-mortar retailers are ramping up their e-commerce offer and bracing themselves for the second wave. It’s going to an unusual Christmas for many reasons - particularly because the next few months remain so uncertain. So in order to make the most of the season, retailers need to plan ahead, innovate their offering and be prepared for the unexpected. “The uncertainty that the pandemic has created continues to grow as we approach the golden quarter and Christmas – the typical time when retailers experience their peak sales,” says Ciaran Bollard, CEO of Koooma. “In light of this, it’s never been more important for retailers to think innovatively. Retailers need to optimise their offering and experience and develop strong e-commerce strategies to not only survive, but thrive into next year too.” Here we speak to some leading industry experts to help you formulate a winning online and offline strategy…
Jonathan borba on unsplash
1. Buy wisely
Some people will have limited funds to spend this Christmas while others will have the same amount of money as usual. So, retailers need to buy inventively and ensure they have great stock across the pricing range to appeal to all pockets. “Review past Christmas trading data to remind yourself what did well, what surprised you and what patterns 42 | boutique. | october 2020
emerged to see if you can harness and adapt this information for this year,” recommends leading business expert Erica Wolfe-Murray. “The early part of
2021 is likely to be uncertain as the UK faces the reality of being outside the EU, recession and the end of the stamp duty holiday. Ensure you go into the

New Year with tight stock control and little excess.”
2. Use online marketplaces
If you haven’t already considered the benefits of online marketplaces, now is a great time to weigh up their benefits for your business. According to Michael Bloom, director for stock management specialist Top to Toe, marketplaces offer numerous advantageous for indies: “The market place sites do all the hard work of getting clients for you, so they are a fast route to more sales,” he says. “It’s a new world that you need to start learning your way around. The larger sites like Amazon and eBay are useful, but there are other sites such as Down Your High Street, which currently has no joining fee and only charges commission if you make a sale. What do you have to lose?”
3. Set up your own e-commerce site
For those indies that still aren’t selling on their own websites, there’s still time to get up and running in time for peak Christmas trading. “Setting up your own website can be really easy if you use sites like Shopify or Big Commerce and it’s an alternative first step to going via market places,” says Bloom. “Top to Toe has a built in link to eBay, Amazon, Shopify, Big Commerce
and quite a few others - so if a retailer creates a product just once within the software, it can be fed automatically to one or more of these sites. The software then automatically keeps all of your stock synchronised across all of your sales channels so you don’t have to.” (Find out more at Toptotoe. com).
4. Ramp up your marketing
Once you’re operating via e-commerce, a clever digital marketing campaign is crucial to make the most of Christmas traffic. “Step one is to pull together a comprehensive mailing list,” say Wolfe-Murray. “Don’t just gather names and email addresses – send out a questionnaire to find out individual customer preferences and tag each response thoroughly. Online purchasing habits will be different from in-store, so do your research. And learn from big retailers – map your own experience with whatever retail newsletters you subscribe to. As with all marketing, regular communication is vital – so develop a plan in the lead up to Christmas and stick with it.”
5. Offer convenience
For any retailer selling online, clickand-collect is now crucial for offering a seamless customer experience. “Convenience is always a priority
during the festive season, which makes click-and-collect and flexible delivery really valuable options for your customers, who’ll be looking for fast and easy,” says Cate Barnes, marketing manager at Citrus-Lime. “Click-and-collect in particular has soared in popularity this year, enabling customers to browse online in the safety of their own home and pick up their items quickly.” (Find out more at Citruslime.com).
6. Move into omnichannel
“If businesses do one thing to improve the customer experience in advance of Christmas this year, it should be unifying their physical stores and e-commerce channels,” says Colin Neil, SVP business development at Adyen UK. “With the threat of regional lockdowns hanging over our heads and potentially impacting consumers’ desire to return to physical shops, unified commerce will be fundamental to ensuring a consistent retail experience and business agility.” He adds: “In the current climate, it is essential that retailers are prepared for change; linking online and offline channels gives the flexibility and agility needed to let customers shop and buy how they like. With this in place, shoppers can browse and make purchases in-store or get all the information they need to make a october 2020 | boutique. | 43

purchase online later. It also provides a valuable avenue to sell to customers in the midst of regional lockdowns.”
7. Offer even more convenience
With so many barriers now in the way of the physical shopping experience, bricks-and-mortar retailers are having to think outside of the box when it comes to making buying easier for consumers. Designer outlet McArthurGlen in Cheshire Oaks is partnering with Dropit over the Christmas period to offer a handsfree shopping experience. Dropit is collecting bags from more than 100 partner stores and delivering them to the customer’s preferred location, such as their home. Shoppers who have driven to the outlet can also collect their bags at the end of the day. The service costs £10 for on-site collection and £15 for nationwide delivery and each option includes an unlimited number of bags. “Insights captured by Dropit’s data analysts report that consumer’s feel safer and more comfortable when they no longer have the hassle of carrying bags,” says Dropit CEO Karin Cabili. “In a post-COVID world, the need for safe, clean and reliable retail experiences has never been greater. Using Dropit means shoppers no longer need to be weighed down by bags or worry about bag contamination. As a result, Dropit is finding that shoppers using the Dropit app tend to shop for longer and spend 4.5 times more per customer.”
8. Offer a personalised experience
The key to safeguarding your retail operations this Christmas is through ensuring you offer a highly competitive online retail experience. However, according Bollard, brands must go beyond “just having a website”. He says: “They need to look at how they can drive more traffic, how they can convert more, how does their checkout work, and how they are utilising the data of their customers. Key to the utilisation of this data is personalisation, which will become 44 | boutique. | october 2020
increasingly important. According to a recent Forrester report, 78 per cent of consumers are only likely to utilise coupons or other offers if those promotions are directly related to how the consumer has previously interacted with the brand. Personalised preferences should be based on interactions such as what consumers with similar shopping habits and interests have purchased.” He adds: “Suggesting offers and promotions that are relevant can really help to increase sales and improve customer satisfaction levels.”
9. Get the basics right
Despite an increased need to stand out from the crowd in the online shopping market, experts warn that retailers should not jump into creating
experiential experiences until they can guarantee basics. While a recent KPMG whitepaper reveals a shift to more immersive and experiential online shopping services as a result of the pandemic, Magento’s UK Consumer preferences Report – conducted between June to July – has found that ease of use is a deciding factor for most shoppers. James Allen-Lewis, development director at Sonassi, explains: “The pandemic has resulted in businesses investing heavily in their e-commerce infrastructure, whether they previously had an online offering or not. If retailers do not ensure their site is easy to use, fast and secure, then consumers will simply look to competitors who offer reliability and security, coupled with an immersive experience.”

Down to Business
“No one wants just plain old EPoS anymore. The pandemic has meant that retailers need to get proficient at selling online - and they need to do it now” Steve Waller iS a former retail oWner and co-founder of neW premium retail SyStem retailable
S
teve Waller certainly knows a thing or two about the latest retail technology. A former retail group owner with seven standalone stores, he used his 30 years’ experience to launch Lois, a highly successful EPoS system for indies. He says its unique functionality brought independent retailers “kicking and screaming” into the digital marketplace. “And now,” he says, “they want more.” Today a new business venture is seeing him join forces with Dutch company Retail Trust to bring a brand new concept to the independent retail market. He describes the new system, Retailable, as the next step in retail tech. “A few years ago the Holy Grail of retail was creating one technical solution that enabled retailers to track, manage and sell stock across all their channels without degrading the customer experience,” he explains. “This was coined ‘hybrid retail’ and is something we have built upon with the launch of Retailable, which offers a 46 | boutique. | october 2020
range of new products and services.” Following the lockdown, Waller says the company is “now inundated with calls from retailers” who are “not just wanting, but needing a Hybrid Retail system.” He explains: “No one wants just plain old EPoS and a website anymore. The pandemic has meant that retailers need to get proficient at selling online - and they need to do it now.” Demand has soared for many reasons, but this year’s sharp shift in consumer behaviour has been a huge catalyst for change. “When the pandemic hit, fashion retailers were seemingly huge victims,” says Waller. “Deserted high streets and the reluctance to spend online created a nose dive in sales. But retailers saw a very rapid rise in demand during and shortly following lockdown. Online marketplaces saw a huge and sustained increase in sales. Retailable suddenly became very busy, very quickly.” Waller adds that this shake up “may well be the wake-up call
that independent retail needed to move forward.” He says: “We have found ourselves in a state of market disruption; no one knows what will happen next and projections remain ‘finger in the air’ predictions. Whenever a sector or marketplace becomes disrupted, it leads to opportunity. It’s that opportunity that retailers need to grab. It’s a survival of the fittest situation now and the parameters have changed; the retail giants are no longer at the top of the food chain.” Retailable comes at a crucial time for the retail sector, he says. As well as accelerating a move to e-commerce, the pandemic has acted as a springboard towards Hybrid Retail Technology for many retailers: “A hybrid retail system should manage selling across all channels as well as manage stock handling, deliveries and returns - this is essential for home shopping and wardrobing,” explains Waller. “It should also enable a retailer to manage staff, allowing
Down to Business them to re-utilise their retail skills. Most importantly, it should enable retailers to communicate to their customers through any platform or channel. And it should centralise marketing communications and give buying confidence to their customers, regardless of how they buy.” So, what exactly does Retailable offer independent fashion retailers? “Retailable offers Hybrid Retail technology, management and consultancy,” says Waller. “Our service means retailers can remain independent, offer fashion at competitive prices, provide marketing communications across all platforms, gain, retain and increase their customer base and loyalty as well as provide outstanding customer service.” As the marketplace is changing so quickly, Waller says he is being asked for not only more technology solutions, but a seemingly never ending list of advice on retail marketing and retail management
both in store and online. For this reason, Waller and his team are engaging with his clients to identify and implement strategies for email marketing campaigns, customer loyalty programmes, Instagram engagement, content marketing, SEO audits, influencer marketing, promotional offers, brand building, online review management and marketplace site strategies. Retailable is also aligned with marketing agency Waller Jones, creating the ultimate space for retailers looking for help to “step up and accelerate” their online and social presence. “We also have new and leading edge technology and functionality,” says Waller. “Our heatmaps and data capture products are amazing, but we don’t need to shout about those at the moment. Our clients need confidence in their future, and we are focussing on the here and now as a foundation. Our retailers’ successes become our own and there will be plenty of products to
‘wow’ them with in time.” So, as well as Waller’s expertise, why else should indies invest in Retailable? “I think it’s our highly personal service that really sets us apart,” says the owner. “We have a team of support people who personally know each and every one of our clients. They will hand hold our retailers to help them get the best out of our technology and marketplace knowledge. It’s an everevolving environment and we make sure they can get the most out of us and our products.” “Retailers need a solution to enable them to sell easily online,” he adds. “Retailable is one solution that incorporates everything retailers need to maximise their online and bricksand-mortar sales – whatever the future brings. Retailable is ready. Retailable can create a Hybrid environment for retailers, quickly and effectively securing their place on the frontline.” CONTACT: Tel: 01243 533 737 Retail-able.co.uk

o say we’re heading towards an unusual Christmas is something of an understatement. With a Covid cases on the rise and social gatherings now restricted to a maximum of six people, the nation’s festive activities could look very different this year. When coupled with social distancing and mandatory face coverings inside shops, bricks-andmortar retailers have their work cut out to create a festive atmosphere that will compete with the convenience of online giants. As we’re all too aware, the entire fashion sector was particularly affected by the lockdown. With weddings and summer holidays cancelled and a large part of the nation working from home, loungewear was one of the year’s winning categories closely followed by sleepwear and athleisure. So now the office party and annual festive drinks in the pub are also under threat, retailers may need to be ready to rejig their usual Christmas offer to react to a change in demand. “If the pandemic has taught retailers anything, it’s that they must be ready to make changes to their business swiftly and be ready to pivot at a 48 | boutique. | OCTOBER 2020
moment’s notice,” says Mina Melikova, co-founder of B2B marketplace TradeGala. “No one knows what the festive season will look like this year and with cases on the rise we could be heading towards spending most of the season at home. While some shoppers will undoubtedly want to dress up at home for Zoom parties and small family gatherings, many will be thinking about looking chic while staying comfortable and will be looking to invest in loungewear.” TradeGala is perfect for boutiques that want to react in-season as buyers can order garments for immediate delivery from a range of independent brands. Its loungewear line-up is perfect for tapping into the Christmasat-home theme. Heroes include two-piece lightweight tracksuits and faux leather leggings from Aimelia, cosy sweatshirts and soft pyjamas by Rossa Intimo as well as coordinating loungewear sets from Avinci Ltd. The range includes a variety of options for shoppers wanting to look great while feeling comfortable throughout the season. Each product on TradeGala also has its own detailed page with professional photographs and in-depth information, which makes it easy to select the right pieces. And because the site is in operation 24/7, retailers can research and choose products whenever and wherever it suits them. TradeGala also offers centralised

customer service and payment protection so buyers can feel confident when ordering. Many of its sellers offer low minimum order stipulations and sell single garments, so boutiques can make a small trial order to test the brand’s viability with their customer base with very little risk. Of course, if we’ve learned anything in 2020 then it’s to expect the unexpected. Covid cases could be on the decline again by Christmas – meaning large family gatherings and office parties could still go ahead. If the
restrictions ease, New Year’s Eve could be the biggest celebration we’ve seen in decades. If that’s the case, retailers might find their small party wear edit flying out at the last minute and the need to re-stock fast. TradeGala offers a range of brands covering daytime to evening chic. This includes feminine dresses and separates by Figi and Lenitif, pretty printed blouses and dresses from Zibi London or full party season glamour pieces by Glitz Shoes and Gatsbylady London.
“Without knowing what the future holds, the task of buying for this year’s party season is incredibly difficult for even the most seasoned buyers,” says Melikova. “For this reason, we hope TradeGala can help boutiques find the best stock for their stores and have it delivered in-season so they don’t miss those crucial sales. Whether we’re staying at home for Christmas 2020 or are able to go out partying, the site offers everything shoppers will be looking for in preparation for this year’s celebrations.” OCTOBER 2020 | boutique. | 49

Coming of age German label Gardeur celebrates its 100-year anniversary this season with new brandinG that nods to its rich history
F
ormerly known as Atelier Gardeur, newly re-branded womenswear collection gardeur is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this season with a fresh aesthetic that nods to its roots. The leading womenswear label has dropped the word ‘Atelier’ from its name and has launched a new logo that references its historical origins as Germany’s oldest trousers specialist. For AW20, its collection is chic and modern, combining on-trend yet classic shapes with high quality European fabrics. With sustainability and ageless style at its core, gardeur is moving into a new era under the expertise of new parent company the Dutch Duijndam Group. The brand first launched in 1920 in the West German city of Mönchengladbach as a family-run outerwear manufacturer. In the late 1950s, it moved into producing men’s trousers before becoming Germany’s first dedicated trouser brand. By 1974, Gardeur was producing garments from its own factory in 50 | boutique. | october 2020
Tunisia. Soon afterwards it launched its first trouser collection for women, coining the brand name Atelier Gardeur. The following decades generated much growth for the brand, which established its first logistics centre in Germany in the year 2000 and a new manufacturing headquarters in Tunisia in 2006. Always striving to break new ground with its innovations, Atelier Gardeur became one of the first textile manufacturer’s in Europe to launch denim trousers using Fair Trade cotton. In 2017, it was bought by the Dutch Duijndam Group, owned by entrepreneurs Steef Duijndam and Thomas Kültz. Today it is Germany’s only trousers supplier that still unites all development steps and production in its own corporate group. To mark its centennial year, the brand is reverting back to gardeur - its original name registered in 1969. The brand has also unveiled a new logo that also references its historic origins: written in lower case with the distinct small ‘g,’ which is
synonymous with quality trousers from Mönchengladbach. “The new brand appearance is contemporary, no-frills, clean-cut and above all, memorable,” say Duijndam and Kültz. “The new storytelling is a re-interpretation of the brand’s inherent DNA. Atelier Gardeur is and will always be a specialist in this field and this is how we project the essence of this company, its expertise and know-how to a new age.” They add: “With self-confident, competent and cosmopolitan communication, gardeur wishes to make this brand coveted again and reach out to new target groups. Customers will be addressed through their fashion and style consciousness as well as their expectations in terms of quality, fit, and sustainable production. Customers’ age is of secondary importance. After all, style and a passion for fashion are not a question of age.” CONTACT: Tel: 07714 329 644 E: charlamehmet@hotmail.co.uk Gardeur.de

How to turn festive sHoppers into loyal customers, by cate barnes at citrus-lime “As we approach Black Friday and the festive season, retailers will attract an influx of new customers who haven’t shopped with them before. This season provides a significant boost to sales as well as a fantastic opportunity to expand your loyal customer base. “An effective loyalty scheme is a valuable tool for converting one-time shoppers into repeat customers. The promise of saving on a future purchase is a powerful motivator to entice customers back to your business. This is distinctly different from an immediate reward in a number of ways. “An immediate reward only promotes that purchase, instead of giving customers a tangible incentive
to come back again. The promise of a future saving gets customers thinking about their next purchase straight away. Citrus-Lime Customer Rewards is proven to actually raise the average transaction value - the ability to earn rewards points encourages customers to spend more. “When each purchase generates incentive for the next one, there is always a reason to come back to your shop. It’s a perpetual cycle, promoting a long-term relationship between customer and retailer. “This also creates a positive reason to stay in touch with your customers, reminding them of the rewards they have built up and can use on their next purchase, keeping your business fresh
in their minds. “If you don’t have a loyalty program currently or want a scheme that effectively draws people back to your business time and time again, it’s well worth getting sorted before the festive season.”

etailers have faced a turbulent year, but the busy Christmas season brings opportunity to recover some lost revenue. This month we speak to Kate Streets, founder of 12-month-old indie Dressed in Westerham, to discover her festive strategy and how she’s steering the business through the crisis‌ october 2020 | boutique. | 55
SHOP TALK
“Nothing has worked as a better marketing tool than Instagram” Kate StreetS iS the founder of 12-month-old lifeStyle independent dreSSed in WeSterham What’s your career background?
I’ve been running my own businesses since I was 21 years old in a range of different genres, starting out in fine dining restaurants through to MOT stations and education in the engineering sector. Opening a boutique was purely because fashion and styling has always been my personal passion. Combining my love for business and fashion was an easy move to make.
When did Dressed Westerham open?
We opened in September 2019 to coincide with the Annual Westerham fete, which was held on the green in front of the new premises – so it really was a race against time. I managed to get the keys to the shop just five days before.
What was the idea behind the shop?
I’ve always wanted to offer every day clothing that can follow a trend yet be accessible to all, with a huge nod to sustainability.
Why did you choose Westerham for its location?
I grew up in the area and my mum used to take me to Westerham shopping when I was little. She taught me early on to buy classic styles and to look after your wardrobe so it lasts a lifetime
Which other retailers surround you and how do you help each other? We are surrounded by small independent businesses and are close to some amazing National Trust places and woodland walks, so the town has really become a destination for food, 56 | boutique. | october 2020
shopping and sight-seeing.
Who is your target customer?
My entire collection is centred on the mother and daughter idea and that each brand can offer something different for every generation. Some timeless pieces can transcend any generation but also nod to the quick changing trends that we see seasonally. I concentrate on a sustainable ethos and work closely with our brands to convey their story.
What are your core labels?
My personal favourite brand and a real luxury label is Bruuns Bazaar, I adore its sustainable ethos and I’m in love with the classic styling. We also have some amazing luxury brands such as Levete Room, Frnch and American Vintage.
Do you forward order or short order?
I do a mixture of both which works well for us. Forward order is to secure the luxury brands and to know what
SHOP TALK is coming in the future seasons, which I mix with some smaller brands that allow us to add stock instantly. This has been especially useful with the pandemic as I’ve been able to curb the forward buys that are slightly irrelevant in the current climate and change the theme to suit the new relaxed styling or work from home environment.
Where do you do your buying?
I do all of my buying with UK agents based in London – I never buy any piece of clothing that I have not seen in person. I’m looking for quality fabric and also the cut and styling. I also want to see if the piece can work well in larger sizing; it’s really important to think about the real female form and not just get excited with the media look books that have been created.
How has this changed during the pandemic? I’ve been extremely lucky that all of the agents I use have either gone on the road or have created a Covid safe environment for us to buy. I have not done any Zoom calls as I feel it can be dangerous to not see the real colours or quality. I’ve recently dropped a brand because they decided to go fully online to buy a collection with a minimum spend of £3,000, which is a lot of money if you buy incorrectly. It’s such a shame when brands decide to remove the middle man from the chain.
Have you revised your buying strategy at all?
I’ve definitely changed the mood of my collection across most of the brands. Luckily I have always chosen a relaxed style with only a nod towards eveningwear. I’ve then adapted the in-season brands and solely bought for the current mood of the moment. Most brands have allowed a percentage of cancellations for the past season to try and help with the pandemic. But again that is down to the relationship you have with your agents and I have
been very lucky.
How have you steered the business through the crisis?
I created a new e-commerce site that has made it easy to sell online if people did not want to venture out. The majority of my sales have been aided by Instagram. My customer wants to chat about the piece before they buy, so Instagram is the perfect way to showcase and converse on a realtime basis with your target audience. Nothing has worked as a better marketing tool for me than Instagram.
What impact did the lockdown have on your business?
I had only been trading for six months at the start of the lockdown, so my customer base was only in its early stages. It was the worst thing to happen to such a new business, especially on a small independent high street like Westerham. I had to adapt to online very quickly and try to create a new audience.
Has there been anything positive to come out of the crisis?
Looking back now, I have created two target markets: one is online based through Instagram and one is a local customer that likes to shop local and support small businesses. The only positive thing to happen here is that I definitely hit a new customer through the lockdown period that maybe I would not have found.
What are your customers buying now?
I’m selling out of Roka bags, which are made from recycled plastic bottles – this is one of the only brands that I’m re-ordering weekly.
How are you finding retailing with the Covid restrictions in place?
Weekly sales are down by an average of 40 per cent and weekends especially are quite different. The constant changes in mask law and shopping
restrictions are making the majority of customers feel reluctant to come out, so I definitely see a change in online shopping versus in-store.
What plans do you have in the run up to Christmas?
I’ve started to receive smaller gift ideas as I’m worried that the stock or delivery systems will not be in place. I’m making sure that items can be easily packaged and sent in case of another lockdown. I’m concentrating on sustainable and lifestyle products for the home, which can make great presents if people are staying in. I will not be heavily focusing on Christmas for marketing as this seems very insensitive. Many of our ladies come into the store to feel normal again, so I will be very sensitive and in tune to the mood of the country. october 2020 | boutique. | 57

“Recent data reveals local markets and shopping areas are experiencing higher levels of activity from home workers” Hari KrisHnadasan, Md at Capri ClotHing, on opportunities for loCal retailers as offiCe worKers reMain at HoMe
“W
hen the economy opened again after lockdown, it was assumed that high streets would begin to return to some normality. But this assumption misses a vital piece for vibrant high streets and city centres: office workers. Cities such as Bristol and Manchester, where offices take up over half the commercial city centre, had fewer empty shops so the amenities available were premium and plentiful. The office jobs brought hundreds and thousands of higher paid people with spare cash in their pockets into the city centre every day - the very people who used to buy a coffee on their way in, pop out to grab lunch, or stay for a pint (or two) after work. This correlation has been turned upside down since lockdown. “Given the technological era we live in, it wasn’t difficult to move office jobs home and out of city centres, which is why we are experiencing this downturn. Data from the Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR) shows how spending in businesses near central London workplaces has been ‘lost or displaced’ between March and July. Businesses in the City of London such as corner shops, cafes, restaurants, hairdressers and other services are experiencing up to 90 58 | boutique. | oCtober 2020
per cent loss in trade. This equates to £500 million a month in the financial district alone. Liverpool City Centre has 45 per cent of its commercial floor space dedicated to offices and only has around 16 per cent its pre-lockdown levels of footfall back.
“But it’s not all doom and gloom for retailers. Manchester’s commuter town of Sale had a huge reopening rate due to the stay-at-home community shopping and spending local something that’s being echoed in other
towns too. “With new government restrictions now in place aimed at slowing the spread of Covid-19, working from home is now being recommended again. There is frustration from the high street as business owners, tenants and landlords have invested money – during an already a tough time – into making properties ‘Covid secure.’ These measures such as social distancing signage, one way systems, reception screens and hand sanitising stations have all been installed. However, now these retailers and offices won’t be properly occupied, it is bringing further frustration for businesses and staff that want to get back to the office. “Tourism over the summer months - staycations - did and continue to boost footfall in seaside and holiday hot spots, which was much needed and welcomed across the counties. “On a macroeconomic level keeping all things equal, recent data reveals local markets and shopping areas are experiencing higher levels of activity from home workers and a local catchment who don’t want to travel far. That is where - at least in the short to medium term – opportunities lie for independent retailers. For boutiques trading on local high streets, now is the time to find new ways to serve a local population facing the fallout from such an expected and unprecedented global event.”
