ustainability is the word on everyone’s lips as the fashion industry works to reduce its environmental impact. But with so many brands now talking about eco-friendly fashion, it can difficult to decipher the real ethical alternatives from those that are greenwashing. For retailers, the rising demand for more conscious consumption is something that cannot be ignored. So with this in mind, we’ve hunted down some worthy sustainable alternatives on page 19.

Elsewhere, the coronavirus outbreak is disrupting fashion supply chains. China produces one third of the globe’s clothing and affected brands and retailers are experiencing manufacturing and shipping delays.

Some fashion events and expos have also been postponed or cancelled, including Hong Kong Fashion Week and Berlin’s Asia Apparel Expo. Now the health epidemic has hit Europe and Italy in particular, Milan Fashion Week was also heavily impacted. Several Chinese designers cancelled their shows because of travel restrictions while Giorgio Armani uninvited guests and live-streamed his show from an empty theatre. Turn to our news pages on page 7 for a more detailed update.

In better news, we’ve spoken to several industry insiders this month to inspire your spring business choices. One of my favourite stories in this issue is that of fashion designer Matthew O’Brien. At just 30 years

old, he has already forged a successful B2C brand and a highly successful three-storey boutique in Chester. Now he wants to roll out his very personal concept as a wholesale model across the UK. Find out how he’s grown a brand that started in his bedroom on page 49. Meanwhile, as many indies continue to struggle on the high street, one boutique owner has taken the matter into her own hands by starting an online community where fellow retailers can share their knowledge. We speak to Amanda Leigh Slattery, owner of Maya Maya in Kendal, on page 60 to find out why she believes working together as an industry is the only way forward.

says. It wasn’t far off the mark: O’Brien already had the mindset of a much older student: “A lot of young people use the first year to have fun as it doesn’t go towards your final degree grade, but I didn’t want to waste any time at all,” he adds.

As his hunger for making garments and decoration grew, the designer’s repertoire evolved too. O’Brien soon made the jump to womenswear, working on bespoke dresses and separates. “I wanted to be creatively free and follow my full design dreams, so that meant designing womenswear too,” he says. In the evenings, the designer also fed his passion for electronics and robotics with another university course, strengthening his design skills by creating wearable tech garments.

By the age of 22 O’Brien was named Britain’s Top Designer, a prestigious accolade that isn’t usually presented to students still studying at university.

The designer also showed his collections at London Fashion Week several times before graduation and even represented UK in Paris.

ashion designer Matthew O’Brien first started making clothes in his bedroom at 15 years old. Today he has an eponymous international clothing empire and a three-storey boutique in Chester city centre. And he’s only just turned 30.

The Matthew O’Brien flagship store opened in 2018 following many years of training and experience in fashion and retail. While still at school, O’Brien wasn’t what you might call a typical teenage. Instead of asking for a traditionally wished for gift for his birthday, he requested a sewing machine and overlocker. Once equipped with the tools necessary, he began making board shorts, t-shirts and hoodies - despite having no training in fashion design whatsoever.

snowball, so the emerging designer began secretly selling a small collection online. Its success was unprecedented. The garments gained the attention of several professional wake boarders, who O’Brien began to sponsor. He also wore his clothing himself, directing friends to his own website without telling them that they were his own designs. “I suppose as a male at that age I was embarrassed to admit that I was into making clothing,” he explains. “My focus had always been on electronics and robotics, but fashion design was becoming my main passion.”

On his eighteenth birthday, while studying for A-Levels, O’Brien decided to tell his friends and family about his clandestine business. They were extremely supportive – so much so that he decided he wanted to train in fashion officially.

Before applying for university, the emerging designer enrolled on a Fashion Illustration course at London’s Istituto Marangoni. The rest, as they say, is history: “This confirmed that I wanted to be a fashion designer,” he says. “So I came back to my hometown of Chester and applied my new knowledge to making dress shirts and smart trousers.”

The money he was making from his business afforded him the financial freedom to continue his training, so he took another university gap year to complete a college course in Fashion Design. While there a lecturer spotted his diligent work ethic and growing potential, which led to him being awarded with a full scholarship at Liverpool Sir John Moores University.

“Because I already had a business I was treated like a mature student, despite only being 20 years old,” he

Following university, O’Brien began honing his craft, moving to London and working alongside top photographers and stylists. “I adsorbed as much knowledge and information as I could from the people around me,” he says. “This meant I was able to refine the brand and what I was about as a designer.”

In 2015, O’Brien returned to Chester and opened his first bricks-and-mortar store. To begin with, it was relatively small. But it was somewhere to meet customers face-to-face and sell all of his designs in one place. It was so successful after the first year that he bought the premises next door and knocked a wall through to create one big space.

Just one year later, the entrepreneur had signed on the dotted line to take over a large building in Chester city centre. His flagship boutique, located on the Tudor-building-lined Eastgate Street, is flanked by retail giants such

as Jack Wills and Marks and Spencer.

On the bottom floor it offers ready-towear occasionwear, eveningwear and day time pieces while the second floor houses men’s tailoring and bridal wear.

On the top floor is his studio, which is home to a busy team of pattern cutters and seamstresses. The business now employs a team of seven people.

A unique selling point of the boutique is that O’Brien is able to offer a bespoke couture service to its customers. “This is great for brides, especially as they often can’t find the gown they have pictured in their head,” he says. “I can literally make their dream dress a reality.” The service is also popular among bridesmaids and mothers of the bride and groom: “It also means I can create a cohesive look for the entire wedding party,” he explains.

The designer promotes the boutique by hosting one themed charity catwalk show each year. His most recent, The Jungle Out There, took place inside a huge marquee at Chester Race Course. It was the largest fashion show outside of London, attracting 450 guests including television presenter Gethin Jones, and saw models walking a 150ft jungle-themed catwalk. Its proceeds went to Lady Taverners and the Countess Charity, with O’Brien supporting as many different causes as he can through his label. “I love hosting fashion shows as it brings our designs to so many different people while we can also support charities,” he explains. “This is now a real highlight

of the year for a lot of our customers and for me too.”

This year O’Brien has stepped into the world of wholesale, launching his first collection at last month’s Pure London. Offering a range of occasionwear dresses and separates based on his inside knowledge of running his own store, the designer said he received an extremely positive response from buyers: “The collection is from one retailer to another, so every piece is designed from my own experience with real customers,” he says. And because everything is made in-house, another major plus-point of the range is that O’Brien is able to react quickly to customer requests.

“I’m going to be so inspired by retail stockists as the collection will be reaching a whole new audience,” he says. “We can be so reactive to what their customers are looking for and I think that will really help with sell-through and making the brand a massive success on a national scale.”

In the coming years, O’Brien has his sights set on opening more boutiques in major UK cities. “I’d like to open stores in Liverpool, Manchester and London,” he says. “But the current focus is on the wholesale collection and building our e-commerce site as so many people now want to shop online, I just want to make sure we don’t lose that personal touch.” And with so many feathers in his cap at such a young age, Matthew O’Brien is certainly one fashion designer we’re going to watch. march 2020 | boutique. | 51

Consumer spending habits are moving increasingly towards sustainability as interest in fast fashion declines, reveals new poll

F

ast ‘throw-away’ fashion is falling out of favour as more Brits make conscious clothing choices, reveals new research commissioned by the Fashion Retail Academy.

A survey of 2,000 adults in the UK in January compared to one carried out in December 2018 reveals the number of sustainable shoppers in Britain has jumped by a third in just 13 months. More than half of Brits (51.4 per cent) are now choosing long-lasting clothes over cheaper fashionable versions - up 33.8 per cent on a year ago.

In addition, the proportion of shoppers who consciously opt for fast fashion — typically cheaper, more trend-led items — has fallen by 46.2 per cent in the same period to just 14

per cent of consumers.

Brits are also now less likely to throw their old clothes away for landfill than they were last year, with almost three quarters (71.3 per cent) choosing to recycle garments compared to 59.7 per cent last year — a 19.4 per cent increase.

Meanwhile, more shoppers are seeking second-hand clothes over buying new, with over two thirds (66 per cent) rifling through rails in charity shops or browsing secondhand clothing apps. Women are driving this trend as 25.4 per cent more female shoppers wear secondhand clothes than men. Consumers aged 55+ are better at recycling their clothing than younger generations, with 75.7 per cent of their age group choosing to recycle versus 64.5 per

cent of younger shoppers.

The sustainability agenda has made massive strides worldwide in the past year, with campaigners such as Greta Thunberg capturing the public’s imaginations while millions more people are choosing to live more environmentally-friendly lives.

The Fashion Retail Academy’s principle Lee Lucas comments: “The focus on sustainability has finally been embraced by consumers in a big way and we’ve witnessed a big shift in shopping habits over the past year.

Shoppers are moving away from fast fashion and there are new waves of consumers who are willing to invest in higher quality items, acknowledging that more expensive price tags might mean more mileage from certain items of clothing.” march 2020 | boutique. | 7

December general election result boosts fashion and footwear sales

December’s general election result gave consumer confidence a boost, increasing sales of UK textiles, clothing and footwear by 3.9 per cent year-on-year in the three months to January. However, despite the increase compared to 2019, sales declined on a 1.5 per cent threemonth basis, reveal the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Retail sales across all categories rose by 0.8 per cent compared to the same three months in 2010, but fell by 0.8 per cent on the previous three

months. Meanwhile, online sales as a proportion of all retail was 19 per cent in January, down from 19.3 per cent in December last year.

Lee Lucas, principle at the Fashion Retail Academy, comments: “With a new year comes new hope for the high street as January brought a Boris bounce in clothing and footwear sales.

“These results mark a return to form for a sector that has clocked up seven consecutive months of no growth on a rolling quarterly basis for clothing sale volumes.”

Buyers brave travel chaos for February’s Pure London It was business as usual at Pure London last month as thousands of buyers braved storm Ciara to find their next season best sellers. The threeday event took place at Olympia and was attended by visitors from over 80 countries, which included buyers from UK indies Sunday Best, The Dressing Room, Pamela Shiffer and Jules B. With over 1,3000 inspirational collections on offer alongside an insightful content programme, attendees weren’t dampened by extreme weather across the UK or the travel chaos that ensued.

and relevance that Pure London has in the buying calendar. Even with trains and flights cancelled due to the weather they showed the true grit of UK fashion to keep it business as usual, demonstrating the resilience of the market.”

Mini Mode makes its mark alongside London Fashion Week The fifth edition of childrenswear show Mini Mode took place in the capital last month alongside London Fashion Week. The event showcased both established and emerging designers from around the globe including A*Dee, Mitch and Son, Baronessa Demi-Couture, Bellos Boutique, Billieblush, Charabia, Embroidery by FJ, IScream, Kate Hill, LB Swim, Leya. me, Little People London, MadPax, Présent de l’ondée, and The Bow Kids. Buyers attended an industry catwalk show while there were also two consumer shows open to the general public featuring see-now-buy-now collections for SS20. Founder Amanda Rabor comments: “This was an amazing show despite the external challenges that the fashion industry faced with the Coronavirus. We showcased a fabulous offering of UK and global brands, which were as exciting as they were beautiful.”

Coronavirus outbreak disrupts the fashion industry The outbreak of the new coronavirus Covid-19 is increasingly impacting the fashion industry. Several trade shows have been postponed including APLF and Fashion Access in Hong Kong and Berlin’s Asia Apparel Expo, which will now take place in June. At the recent Magic trade show in Las Vegas, around 40 per cent of exhibitors were unable to attend due to travel bans in Asia.

Shanghai Fashion Week, which was scheduled for 26 March – 2 April, has also been postponed alongside Beijing’s China Fashion Week.

Meanwhile as rising numbers of coronavirus cases hit Italy during Milan Fashion Week, doctors from the Italian Ministry of Health reportedly gave buyers and editors temperature checks on arrival at the airport. A number of catwalk shows were also cancelled including Angel Chen and Ricostru as well as Giorgio Armani, which live streamed its show on social media from an empty

theatre. A brand spokesperson said: “The decision was made to avoid exposing guests to any dangers to their health.”

In the UK the government said it is “well prepared” to deal with coronavirus cases while the risk to individuals has been raised from low to moderate.

Vend teams up with NearSt to help indies attract more Google shoppers into their physical stores Software provider Vend has teamed up with NearSt to help indies boost their bricks-and-mortar sales. British start-up NearSt enables retailers to market their in-store stock on Google, targeting local online shoppers.

Vend has integrated its system onto its POS platform, which allows business owners to attract hundreds of nearby shoppers that are searching for products they have in store. The collaboration will also help show indies how nearby customers are behaving and how every product they have in stock is performing online.

The partnership follows NearSt’s recent research that found 83 per cent of shoppers would prefer to shop in-store instead of online if they were made aware that an item was available locally.

aking place at the end of last month at NEC Birmingham, trade show Moda - the heart of UK fashion incorporating the National Footwear Show - brought the industry together with its successful AW20 edition. 6. Invest in your staff

It’s no longer enough to train employees on your products and store policies - these things are just the bare minimum. You need to teach them to relate better to shoppers.

Gemma Ward heads to chester to experience mattheW o’Brien’s eponymous three-storey Boutique

F

ashion designer Matthew O’Brien first started making clothes in his bedroom at 15 years old. Today he has an eponymous international clothing empire and a three-storey boutique in Chester city centre. And he’s only just turned 30.

The Matthew O’Brien flagship store opened in 2018 following many years of training and experience in fashion and retail. While still at school, O’Brien wasn’t what you might call a typical teenage. Instead of asking for a traditionally wished for gift for his birthday, he requested a sewing machine and overlocker. Once equipped with the tools necessary, he began making board shorts, t-shirts and hoodies - despite having no training in fashion design whatsoever.

snowball, so the emerging designer began secretly selling a small collection online. Its success was unprecedented. The garments gained the attention of several professional wake boarders, who O’Brien began to sponsor. He also wore his clothing himself, directing friends to his own website without telling them that they were his own designs. “I suppose as a male at that age I was embarrassed to admit that I was into making clothing,” he explains. “My focus had always been on electronics and robotics, but fashion design was becoming my main passion.”

On his eighteenth birthday, while studying for A-Levels, O’Brien decided to tell his friends and family about his clandestine business. They were extremely supportive – so much so that he decided he wanted to train in fashion officially.

Before applying for university, the emerging designer enrolled on a Fashion Illustration course at London’s Istituto Marangoni. The rest, as they say, is history: “This confirmed that I wanted to be a fashion designer,” he says. “So I came back to my hometown of Chester and applied my new knowledge to making dress shirts and smart trousers.”

The money he was making from his business afforded him the financial freedom to continue his training, so he took another university gap year to complete a college course in Fashion Design. While there a lecturer spotted his diligent work ethic and growing potential, which led to him being awarded with a full scholarship at Liverpool Sir John Moores University.

“Because I already had a business I was treated like a mature student, despite only being 20 years old,” he

SHOP TALK says. It wasn’t far off the mark: O’Brien already had the mindset of a much older student: “A lot of young people use the first year to have fun as it doesn’t go towards your final degree grade, but I didn’t want to waste any time at all,” he adds.

As his hunger for making garments and decoration grew, the designer’s repertoire evolved too. O’Brien soon made the jump to womenswear, working on bespoke dresses and separates. “I wanted to be creatively free and follow my full design dreams, so that meant designing womenswear too,” he says. In the evenings, the designer also fed his passion for electronics and robotics with another university course, strengthening his design skills by creating wearable tech garments.

By the age of 22 O’Brien was named Britain’s Top Designer, a prestigious accolade that isn’t usually presented to students still studying at university.

The designer also showed his collections at London Fashion Week several times before graduation and even represented UK in Paris.

Building a brand

Following university, O’Brien began honing his craft, moving to London and working alongside top photographers and stylists. “I adsorbed as much knowledge and information as I could from the people around me,” he says. “This meant I was able to refine the brand and what I was about as a designer.”

In 2015, O’Brien returned to Chester and opened his first bricks-and-mortar store. To begin with, it was relatively small. But it was somewhere to meet customers face-to-face and sell all of his designs in one place. It was so successful after the first year that he bought the premises next door and knocked a wall through to create one big space.

Just one year later, the entrepreneur had signed on the dotted line to take over a large building in Chester city centre. His flagship boutique, located on the Tudor-building-lined Eastgate Street, is flanked by retail giants such

as Jack Wills and Marks and Spencer.

On the bottom floor it offers ready-towear occasionwear, eveningwear and day time pieces while the second floor houses men’s tailoring and bridal wear.

On the top floor is his studio, which is home to a busy team of pattern cutters and seamstresses. The business now employs a team of seven people.

A unique selling point of the boutique is that O’Brien is able to offer a bespoke couture service to its customers. “This is great for brides, especially as they often can’t find the gown they have pictured in their head,” he says. “I can literally make their dream dress a reality.” The service is also popular among bridesmaids and mothers of the bride and groom: “It also means I can create a cohesive look for the entire wedding party,” he explains.

The designer promotes the boutique by hosting one themed charity catwalk show each year. His most recent, The Jungle Out There, took place inside a huge marquee at Chester Race Course. It was the largest fashion show outside of London, attracting 450 guests including television presenter Gethin Jones, and saw models walking a 150ft jungle-themed catwalk. Its proceeds went to Lady Taverners and the Countess Charity, with O’Brien supporting as many different causes as he can through his label. “I love hosting fashion shows as it brings our designs to so many different people while we can also support charities,” he explains. “This is now a real highlight

of the year for a lot of our customers and for me too.”

This year O’Brien has stepped into the world of wholesale, launching his first collection at last month’s Pure London. Offering a range of occasionwear dresses and separates based on his inside knowledge of running his own store, the designer said he received an extremely positive response from buyers: “The collection is from one retailer to another, so every piece is designed from my own experience with real customers,” he says. And because everything is made in-house, another major plus-point of the range is that O’Brien is able to react quickly to customer requests.

“I’m going to be so inspired by retail stockists as the collection will be reaching a whole new audience,” he says. “We can be so reactive to what their customers are looking for and I think that will really help with sell-through and making the brand a massive success on a national scale.”

In the coming years, O’Brien has his sights set on opening more boutiques in major UK cities. “I’d like to open stores in Liverpool, Manchester and London,” he says. “But the current focus is on the wholesale collection and building our e-commerce site as so many people now want to shop online, I just want to make sure we don’t lose that personal touch.” And with so many feathers in his cap at such a young age, Matthew O’Brien is certainly one fashion designer we’re going to watch. march 2020 | boutique. | 51

I was always drawn to the fashion world and studied for a BA in Fashion Design at Regent’s University in London. After graduating I went to work for high-end British brand Belville Sassoon and later the haute couture house Valentin Yudashkin, where I worked on high-quality handmade gowns. These were very special made-to-measure pieces for customers including politicians, celebrities and members of the royal family.

Why did you want to launch your own fashion brand?

Working with these designer brands was an amazing experience, but what I really wanted to do was to create my own line of affordable and stunning clothing, to see my creations in the shops and on the streets and to make women happy.

What was the idea behind your brands City Goddess and Goddiva?

My business partner Thangarajah Kuganeswaran and I launched City Goddess in 2003 with an investment of just £5,000 each. We combined my experience in fashion design with his background in manufacturing to create an original brand. We already had a great network of wholesale clients who started buying from us straight away, and we returned our investment after just two months. Goddiva grew more organically – we had been working on a private label for a couple of years and 54 | boutique. | MarCh 2020

What led to the launch of B2B fashion marketplace TradeGala?

I know how difficult it can be to establish a successful brand in such a competitive field - a situation made worse by a distinct lack of platforms dedicated to B2B and wholesale trade.

This gave me the idea to create a wholesale fashion marketplace where brands could expand their reach and buyers could find desirable products and make purchases through a userfriendly process. The idea became a reality with TradeGala – we think it’s the future of wholesale fashion.

How do you think it is answering the needs of buyers?

Traditionally, the best way to source new brands was to attend fashion trade shows held throughout the world, but buyer attendance has been decreasing steadily over the past few years. I think confidence in the economy is still low and businesses are looking to cut costs wherever they can. Avoiding travel and accommodation costs is often first on the list. Plus, a younger generation of buyers is more comfortable in forging relations online, so face-to-face meetings are no longer a priority. I think TradeGala offers a great solution to these changing ways of working in the industry

Do you think the platform can aid the industry in other ways, such as helping it become more sustainable?

Absolutely. By connecting brands and buyers online, we can help all of our users to reduce their carbon footprint. There is no longer a need to travel nationally or internationally to meetings and events on a regular basis.

We are also working on introducing a consolidated shipping service so buyers can combine their orders from multiple brands. Finally, we have created a dedicated sustainable fashion category allowing buyers to

easily source brands who support both sustainable and ethical production and distribution.

Why do you think TradeGala is such a great place to sell your brands?

It’s a one-stop shop, allowing buyers to source everything they need to stock their collections and source both wellknown and exclusive brands. We’re using the latest technologies to bring our buyers a platform that’s as simple to use as their favourite e-commerce platforms like Amazon or eBay.

What does a typical day look like for you as the cofounder of three fashion companies?

Busy! In the morning I catch up on emails and often have a fitting session for the Goddiva and City Goddess brands, as I still oversee the design for both. My afternoons are usually dedicated to meetings with the teams or our external suppliers to analyse what’s working, streamline processes and make improvements.

How do you juggle three businesses?

I’m very lucky to have an amazing team of people to work with who I can trust. Everyone on the team contributes to the success of the companies.

What are your favourite pieces from your current City Goddess and Goddiva collections?

It’s difficult to narrow it down to just a few pieces! My style is glitter and glamour, so of course this season reflects that. We have some stunning new designs with sheer fabrics, delicate pastel shades – particularly this season’s must-have sage green. Think floaty and feminine – perfect for a summer party or wedding.

Where do you find the inspiration for your clothing designs?

I travel around the world a lot and

often find my inspiration just by looking at every day women on the street. Everywhere I go I see women dressing to highlight their femininity in different ways - and this provides lots of inspiration for me that I can then translate into my designs.

What are the main projects you’re working on at the moment?

We have a new brand coming out soon under our Goddiva collections – Danaya – offering intricate, hand embellished designs that are real show stoppers. We’ll be showcasing the new styles on all of our platforms so watch this space. As for TradeGala, we’re expanding our ranges and introducing both childrenswear and menswear collections, plus gifts and much more to come.

Why do you think TradeGala is a great platform for other boutique brands?

Whether a brand is well established or completely new to wholesale, TradeGala is a great place to expand and grow with no initial risk. We support our brands at every step of the way, providing a web platform based on the latest technologies, a centralised payment system to help protect against non-payment and fraud, dedicated account managers and customer service, plus lots more. We’re also investing heavily in international markets, so it’s a great way to access international buyers that may be out of reach to smaller brands.

What is your main focus for the future of your brands and TradeGala?

With Brexit, the coronavirus and other debilitating factors affecting the fashion industry and the economy as a whole, we know that we need to work hard on strengthening our relationships with our suppliers and buyers in order to continue to grow in these turbulent times. I think running a successful business is about creating great relationships, so my main focus is always on that.

I worked in the motor industry for 20 years, retiring in 2005. My aim was to be at home more and do something that was a bit more feminine. It sounds like a cliché but in reality I wanted to try to find myself again.

How would you describe the business?

We have gone through various incarnations in 14 years, experimenting with menswear between 2015 and 2017. Currently our customer base is women in their late thirties and over who want something wearable but with a point of difference.

Which brands do you stock?

Our entry level brand is Soya Concept and we have stocked James Lakeland for years and have a good following for the brand. We rely on James a lot and he is always very understanding and great to work with. Up Pants are popular. We also like to work with brands that offer unstructured style such as Ozai n Ku and Mama B. Tate Fashions has supplied us with Lizabella and Ella Boo for years - occasion wear that is versatile and can suit other situations post occasion. Atom label provides some of our glamorous wear.

This is our current choice and much of that is down to the people themselves as well as the collections; people buy from people. I also have a few of my own designs in the store and that’s an area I’d like to develop more.

How has business been for the past few months?

2019 was the worst year for retail on record. A changing high street and the way people shop is partly responsible. I keep hearing the high street is evolving and not dying. While that might be true, some of it is in an extremely perilous position. Evolution doesn’t happen overnight. Brexit negotiations have created concern and worry and consumer confidence is at an all time low. Many of my customers are farmers; they are so uncertain about their futures and EU subsidies that they are being extremely cautious.

That’s just one example.

Is this why you have decided to close the store for now?

Yes. I currently have a financially healthy business, but I’ve had to consider whether that will that be the case in a year if these market conditions continue. I’m not sure but I’m fairly confident that we’re looking at this time frame before confidence returns. In the meantime, what happens next? What will the final implications of leaving the EU be for us? We simply don’t know.

This business relies on huge forward ordering. Forward ordering and an unknown future creates so many issues. Consumerism is coming to an end and we are seeing more conscious consumption. Sustainability will begin to matter more and fast fashion is receiving the negative press it deserves.

We are entering unchartered waters and we will all have to adapt.

What plans do you have for the business in the future?

In the last few days we’ve been offered an opportunity to reinvent Maya Maya in a new destination shopping area that is about to be redeveloped. It is an area with more footfall at what would be a significant financial saving for us.

Cost control is always important but I think it will be crucial in the near future.

Why did you start the Boutiques in Business Facebook group?

As indies we are isolated from each other so we don’t learn from each other’s failures and successes. There is no opportunity to share best practice; what may seem obvious to one boutique owner may not be to another. For us to stay around we have to continue to be the best we can be and share our experiences. Emotional support is a huge part of the group and it’s also very educational.

What could suppliers do to support indies more?

Work with us through the whole process, not just sell to us. Thirty days or upfront payment is simply too restricting for a lot of small businesses - cash flow is king. There has to be another way that we can all work together more productively through the entire process. If indies don’t get more help then there simply wont be any of us left and then no one wins.

We need to reinvent this fashion buying wheel.

“T

hirty years ago many knitwear manufacturers disappeared overseas and retailers discovered they could cut costs by ordering from Chinese producers. Now the tables may be turning due to the outbreak of Covid-19, which is causing chaos for supply chains. Many larger high street retailers are worried they’ll have no stock left soon because so much now comes from the Far East.

“For decades, big British retailers turned their backs on UK garment manufacturers, resulting in the closure of hundreds of textile factories. But the virus has laid bare how exposed global trade is to a sudden shock with supply chains being massively interrupted. A product made in a UK factory can reach a shop’s shelves just eight to 12 weeks after it’s been ordered, compared to the five or six months it takes to transport it on a boat from China. In that time, a fashion trend may have passed altogether.

“High street fashion giant Next sources 20 per cent of its clothing from China and roughly half of Primark’s clothing also come from Chinese factories. Many factories have suspended their operations as officials try to contain the disease. However even when the factories reopen, not all of the workers will return immediately and they won’t be working at full capacity.

“For many forward order businesses, the disruption to supply chains is causing concern about the delivery of AW20. While there are virtually no spinners, weavers or garment makers in Wuhan, Hubei does play a key major role in linking China’s eastern production areas. Many Western fashion brands and retailers are already trying to reduce sourcing from China and are scrutinising their supply chains in response to the ongoing trade war with the USA. So, Covid-19 serves as a timely reminder to brands of the need to future proof their strategies, diversify sources of supply and maintain alternatives to China. Particularly in an environment that already includes an uncertain global economy and unclear trade relationships.”
