ello everybody! I hope that you’re all settling in to the new year as well as we have been here at the Barber Magazine.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the importance of the next generation. No, I’m not talking about Star Trek. I’m talking about the future faces of the barbering industry as a whole. That’s why, in this education-filled February issue of the Barber Mag, we’re taking a long look into why education and training is a staple in the industry from page 11.

From page 29, we’re also diving into why this time of year is extra important for retailing within your barbering business. Be sure to check it out for some extra tips and tricks in time for Valentine’s Day. From myself and everyone else here at the Barber Magazine, we hope that you have a fantastic month!

Andy Dawson of Menspire Academy tells us about his experience with education and training, as well as a little about himself and what he’s able to offer to the barbering industry.

A

ndy, recently hitting that milestone of 21, has been cutting hair since he was 16 and left school. He declined five different university offers, deciding to persue his one true passion, hair.

In the year 2018, Andy had reached the age of 18 and made the incredible achievement of opening his very own Menspire Salon after building up a strong, sturdy relationship with the Menspire brand. In 2019, Andy won the prestigious SHABA (Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards) Scottish Barber of the year.

Andy explains how this has led him to many more opportunities since the remarkable feat: “Since then I have had experience doing various stage shows such as Pro Hair live, The Great British Barber Bash and others. I even had the opportunity to assist Josh Lamonaca educate not only at the Menspire Academy, but internationally in places

such as Brussels, Belgium and Turin, Italy.”

Having a keen interest in the development of aspiring barbers worldwide, Andy believes that one of the most important factors to focus on within the barbering industry is, in fact, education and training. This stems from his own experiences during the pinnacle of his development as a trainee barber.

The astonishing lessons he learned branched out in many ways, most notably of which is the fact that Andy

is now a notable name when it comes to passing down industry knowledge.

Andy goes into a little more detail: “I believe that a key factor to my rapid success and progression was due to the fact that I invested in my education and surrounded myself with the right people. Since the education I received at Menspire was so powerful, I always aspired to pass on the knowledge that I have gained and impact any student’s career in the same way.”

The process begins by arranging a telephone or e-Mail consultation in order to gain an understanding of what you desire to work on creating a tailor-made curriculum built to fit the purpose of your learning needs. From there, the team will then present to you the schedule of the day that they understand from the initial consultation. Once both parties have agreed and confirmed you will then arrange the time schedule of the class.

If you are interested in two participants on a private education day, the price will be £799. Group training is also available with a minimum of four students at £250

per person.

You will be required to bring your own equipment to the class and, in addition, you will also receive a certificate of continual professional development after your class.

Ollie’s educational tips Ollie Foster is the lead educator with Great British Barber Bash and part of the OSMO Creative Team, as well as a two-salon owner in Chester, UK. Today, he is here to provide you with some key points stating why you should get involved with education.

Never Stop Learning It doesn’t matter if you’ve been cutting hair ten days or ten years. You can always learn something from someone. I have never left a course feeling unfulfilled. Even if I leave with one new technique, it has been worth it in my opinion. Even if your work speaks for itself, there’s always a why. I like facts and knowing why things are done in a certain way, this is why I love to educate

Ignite Your Passion This job can become stagnant, so it’s important to take yourself out of your comfort zone to be able to grow. Nobody ever grows inside their comfort zone, so take a step towards a new goal. Goal setting can help you reach your targets.

Meeting New People If you’re putting yourself out of your comfort zone, you’re going to make new friends. It’s likely these people will feel how you feel, and share the same passion. I have met some amazing friends attending courses, and I’m sure they’ll be lifelong.

Opportunities The way that I got involved with Great British Barber Bash was simply attending courses, always being willing to help and grow. I started by asking if I could help in any way. I was lucky enough to assist working on the stands at the shows and slowly built myself up to be where I am today. I stand by the motto: “HARD WORK PAYS OFF”.

Self-confidence You always leave a course with a spark. Wanting to get back into your salon, wanting to try out new techniques, maybe with new equipment. This is the part I love most, seeing how it changes your everyday job. As well as this, I like to be reassured that I CAN DO THIS. When you haven’t had a response from Instagram or your peers, you will instead find this on a course and, if you don’t, you will be guided to success.

s we all know, and it’s no secret, everyone looking to make it in the industry has to start somewhere. But how can investing in the bright futures’ of our aspiring barbers be beneficial to you, as an already established business owner or barber?

Kingston College has a commercial premises for hairdressing and a barbershop. As a whole, it’s called Headmasters Academy. The students benefit from their industry-standard commercial hair, barbering setting.

All our students are timetabled into the commercial salon for weekly client sessions as we place considerable emphasis on the development of student’s communication, alongside social and employability skills to prepare them either for employment within the industry or progression to the next level.”

Jenny adds.

Naturally, it’s painfully obvious to the average barber why their education is important. It’s thanks to places like Headmasters Academy that demonstrate the value of it to aspiring barbers. So,

how does this tie in with barbers who are already established in the barbering community?

When it boils down to it, an apprenticeship can mould apprentices into the master barbers you’ll need them to be. As they hone their skills as a barber, they’ll eventually grow whilst building up a following. This, implemented with time spent at a barbershop, will demonstrate value to your clientele, increasing their chances of wanting to re-visit to see a friendly face.

At Headmasters Academy, all barbering employers are welcome to consider offering their students work experience in the future. The barbering industry is about connecting and sharing, so getting in touch with an academy about their apprentices is highly encouraged.

Connor McLeod (@cmcbarber), Founder & Director of CMC Barbershop and Head Barber at the flagship MÜHLE Store in London, claims that when he was learning, it was an amazing chance to gain an understanding of how hair behaves and the theory behind it. He was able to learn advanced scissor techniques that became invaluable later in his career, and just look at where he is now. Connor said: “After 12 years in the industry, and a few barbershops and education courses, I decided I wanted to put all of my knowledge and passion into creating my own space where I could give the public my version of what good service is.”

According to Connor, education is the key to success. He quotes Benjamin Franklin by saying: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest” and we couldn’t agree more. “I believe that education is fundamental for your career.

you have the freedom to develop your own understanding and style from tried and tested methods.” Connor adds.

With the correct understanding of technique and theory, you can come to grips with all aspects of barbering.

This will result in nothing but positive feedback on both social media and through word of mouth from your client base.

In regards to developing his skills as a barber, Connor adds: “I personally invest roughly 10% of my salary into honing my

skills, whether this is in form of online courses, one-to-one training, look and learns or just buying books and soaking up information. It’s important to stay one step ahead of your competitors.”

When it comes down to it, apprentices are the future of your barbershop.

If you’re looking for a long-term commitment from someone, an apprentice is absolutely one of the smartest moves. These will help keep your business running for years and years to come.

Not only will having an apprentice in your barbershop help build a more stable foundation over time, but there are government incentives to take on aspiring young barbers. This will help cover the cost of their wages.

and always have time for a chat, pushing you to get to the next level and always advising you to go on courses to improve.

This is the sort of thing that will honestly boost your business morale, resulting in more clientele and more revenue. It’s a win-win!

Brad explains his views on the importance of education: “I’d recommend everyone in this industry to go on a course, improve and learn.

Once you’ve been on a course and learnt new techniques and different ways of cutting hair, then you’ll be motivated and buzzing to get back into the barbershop and try out these new techniques.

“Events such as The Great British Barber Bash offer some great courses, and I always recommend them to anyone who’s a beginner to someone that’s got experience. You should be going to as many shows as you can, meeting barbers and asking them questions to find out as much as you can.” Having many avenues to explore possibility is the best way to maximise your options.

Jen Winters, owner of Phoneypony Barbers and Tattoo in Chelmsford, Essex is a renowned, travelled barber who’s been in the industry for 17 years. She talks us through her unique take on the Essex Pompadour.

I

have chosen this haircut as it’s a very popular style here in Essex.

I call it the ‘Loosey Goosey’ aka The Essex Pomp. I love the style as it has evolved from the traditional Pompadour. I like to base all of my styles on classic cuts as I feel they are the best foundation for any style, and are a great start for barbers as they can then adapt them in line with modern barbering. This cut is timeless and would suit most gents who would like to keep some length. It’s simple to do but has a powerful finish.

Wet down the hair and section from the recession area to the crown. There should be no fight in the hair and the section should be clean. Put your baseline in by clipper over comb or scissor over comb to a 3 guard. Keep the baseline against the widest point of the head. Make sure you keep the drop towards the back of the head so that there’s a good base over the occipital bone.

Remove the hair under the baseline with a 3 guard. Then, a 2 guard before finishing with a 1. Remember that you are working up to the baseline, not past it. Move on to doing a small zero taper to make the frame nice and polished.

Refine the baseline and remove any desired weight. This will help with the softness and flow of the cut. Repeat on the other side.

Part the hair down the middle, but allow the hair to sit naturally without any bend or fight. Starting with the crown area, over direct the back to the rear baseline to connect to the sides of the haircut.

This should be done at a 45 degree angle on either side. Finish by taking the back at a 90 degree angle to connect both sides of the crown area.

Work on one side first, elevating each section at a 45 degree angle and repeat on the other side. Then, go through the top at a 90 degree angle to connect both sides. Point cut the top to help soften and remove weight.

Use texture spray (I use KingBrown Texture spray) to give hold and control to the hairstyle. Blow-dry everything back and add some height into the front of the haircut to give some nice lift and movement. Use a vent brush to help give more volume. The hairdryer should be on a medium heat and medium setting to help give control over the styling.

Blow-dry 90% of the hair as this gives you a chance to refine and remove hair that isn’t needed.

Do any last touches to the tapers front, back and line out. Go back in with the hairdryer on a low heat to help give hold and shine. Add some texture powder (I use Kingbrown Texture Powder) for a dry, natural finish.

The T Level Industry Placement

Development of the government’s new 1T Level Technical Qualification in Hairdressing, Barbering and Beauty Therapy is now underway with delivery to commence across England in 2023. he contract for this T Level was awarded to NCFE, who will work alongside its specialist partner VTCT, by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (the Institute) in October 2021.

T Levels are high-quality, work-focused alternatives to A Levels for students aged 16-18. These new flagship Level 3 technical programmes span two years and will equip students with the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to progress into skilled employment. One of the four key components that make up a T Level is the industry placement.

This month we focus on someone who’s journey started all the way in Iraq. A barber, who was truly saved by his love for barbering. The sheer determination to become a successful barber drove this lad through some of the hardest and most difficult times.

C

KFADES is, by far, one of the most passionate barbers you will find. He has a deep love affair with the barbering trade, and there seems to be nothing stopping him from achieving his goal to become of the country’s best urban barber. He now has his own spot at one of the country’s leading urban barber brands, Smokey Barbers.

We met up with CK, and discussed a few things about his past, his journey and his ambitions moving forward.

CK said: “There’s a burning desire to be the best and help as many people as I can in life”. This is something that stuck with me, as you often hear people say they want to be successful. But, to hear someone say they want to help as many people as they can, is quite admirable and refreshing.

“Barbering saved my life, and made sure I didn’t fall into the wrong life when I came to the UK as a young lad.

My only goal, was to work hard, and build a life from nothing, I had no one to help me financially, but I understood that, I had to just graft hard and once I could afford my clippers, like would start changing quickly.” CK continues.

After working in restaurants, grafting away behind the scenes in the kitchen, CK relied on his ambition to become a barber to push him through the long, hard shifts. After his first purchase of some half decent clippers, CK hit the road and started trimming anyone who would say yes to a free haircut.

“I knew that if I used my spare time to offer free haircuts, it would help me better my skills and prepare me for paying customers at a barbershop. As I got better, more and more people wanted trims” CK continues.

He’s doing more than he ever expected. He’s had some bumps on the way, barbershop politics as usual,

but his humbleness, determination and willingness to do it the right way, have kept him on the right track.

Five retail tips

Tigg, owner of Tigg Hickin Hair Studio, provides tailored one-to-one services in a small village in Leicestershire. Having worked in the barbering industry for over four years, they’ve come across and explored a number of innovative products and retail trends, by both big and independent brands.

Barber-Client Trust There is a particular bond a client has with their barber. At the end of the day, we are paid to make them look and feel as good as possible, which involves a lot of trust. Once you have built up this trust, your client is more likely to try out what us barbers offer. If a barbershop is selling their own products, it’s important that the client believes in what they are being sold, and that it’s not just being used to add extra cash in to the barber’s pocket.

Product Knowledge Clients aren’t always aware of which products they should be using for their hair type, which can lead to them never quite feeling able to emulate the effect they leave the barbershop with. It’s key for barbers to have a good working knowledge of, and have tried, a wide range of products to understand the way they work, especially for different hair types. You should be able to stock the appropriate products for your client base. Being aware whether a product is vegan or cruelty-free is also handy.

Revenue and Budget Adding additional revenue to our monthly wages is obviously great, and retailing products can be ideal in addition to what we do. The extra few quid a month can really add up, especially during quieter periods. It is important to be aware of what clients are willing to pay for hair products, and strike the right balance between meeting your own financial needs and promoting products in the clients’ interest.

Other Forms of Retail The most natural form of retail for most barbers is probably styling products. Yet, there are so many other avenues you can explore.

Selling independently-made products which match your brand or studio style, such as clothing, can be great way to support and build relationships with fellow small business owners, whilst creating more revenue for yourself. The rise of barbers setting up in existing retail areas, such as tattoo shops or record stores, shows the success which can come from working alongside other creative industries.

Socials and branding Social media is, for most, the quickest and easiest way to promote your business. And for retail, it can be as easy as shooting some slick shots of your products on your phone to get them selling. Accompanying this with an image of a client whose cut has been styled with the product is a great way for buyers to see what it can do.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it has many barbers scratching their heads for the next big way to market their available products. We speak with some experienced barbers who offer their advice.

t’s of the utmost importance to be aiming to sell products to your clients within your barbershop, but it is often overlooked. As Valentine’s Day draws closer, you will find that there will even be people who turn to you aiming for recommendations for the next big gift set that they should be keeping an eye out for.

Marley Mayer (@MarleyMayerhair) Senior Barber at Winteridges Barbershop explains why, at his shop, they sell products to their clients: “We offer a range of products to achieve many different looks for clients. This is so they can recreate the same style on a daily basis. We currently offer the Slick Gorilla trio of powder, salt spray and wax but are currently looking to expand our retail section and grow the shop! Our existing products don’t last long on the shelves, as people are constantly buying and gifting products.”

Marley continues on to explain that having products as an option can also drastically increase profits and draw in new clients, building a level of trust after expressing your knowledge to a customer.

Marley adds: “The trust is always there with your shop’s clientele, so they will trust everything you say related to hair. That’s why pushing retail into your barbershop works hand in hand.

Minimal effort is required when selling, as your work does the talking, but you’ll end up with maximum profits and client respect.”

Bramley explains his thoughts on how they include retailing within their services: “I think for me especially, it is one of my favourite parts about the job. Giving out little gems here and there when it comes to product choice. Obviously, as barbers, we want to help you in every way possible, it’s not just about cutting your hair anymore.

“The importance of retailing in a barbershop environment has, over the years and especially into this decade, hugely expanded and changed a lot.

people entices them to not only come in and get a haircut, but also come and buy the product and ask for our professional advice.”

Owen also mentions that big events throughout the year, such as Valentine’s Day or Halloween, should be optimised for selling and bringing in new clientele.

But it shouldn’t just stop there. What else can you do to maximise efficiency?

“There is no better way of promoting yourself and your range of products than using these holidays in the year to bring people in. Maybe a discount here and there, or different ideas like releasing a new product or a giveaway for any of the products over the length of the holiday. That is the beauty of this industry nowadays, every barbershop is unique and different in its own way.” Said Owen.

Something key to note is the use of social media. Get with the times and keep up with recent trends, ensuring that you’re making sure that you’re maximising use to really bring out what’s best for your barbershop shelves.

Overall, retailing is one of the most important parts of being a barber. You shouldn’t be bypassing one of the easiest solutions to making some added revenue within your shop. It’ll only bring more to your business and, trust us, your clients will love it!

What can you tell me about your barbering career?

I started working as a barber when I was 18 at my father’s barbershop. In the beginning, it wasn’t easy. You’ve got to build up a level of trust before you move on from simply sweeping hair. You can also learn a lot from watching other barbers.

How have you grown over the years?

I immediately decided to start learning at a barber academy to learn as quickly as possible. I also practiced at home, giving haircuts to my friends. My first haircuts probably took around one hour, but over time they got a lot faster.

I didn’t even care about money, my only purpose was to learn and improve every day. When the customer tells you

that you did a great job, I think it is the best payment you can get.

At the age of 23, I started teaching at a barber academy and I have won some Italian hair tournaments in Turin, Naples, Padua and Milan. In 2021, I decided to create my own team and start my own business. The Club Barbershop is the fusion between the classic barbers, where I worked for almost eight years, and the modern barbershops that we see today. It’s not only a barbershop but a place to share stories, drink a beer and have a haircut.

What can UK barbers learn from barbers learn from Italian barbers?

If you work hard and love what you do, you can get everything you want in your life. I don’t think there are many

differences between Italian barbers and UK ones. I think that, overall, we both have to learn from each other.

Any general thoughts or advice you’d like to share with our readers?

Making the customer feel at home is our purpose. I’m also proud to work with great people who help me to make the club one of a kind. Their names are Mario and Alberto, who are both barbers, and Vittoria who works in beauty. Another great thing that happened to me is getting to be the barber of the Venezia soccer team. Honesty, I never thought I’d get to this point. I’m filled with satisfaction every time they call me for a haircut.

The main showroom is where, after the Cape Kings team have prepared some fantastic new embroidery, photographs will be taken of the products to help set the scene.

One thing that you’ll notice when appreciating the scene is the giant glass windows at the back, revealing the factory shop floor where the production really takes place. “The front of the shop, that whole area there is our showroom.

It’s actually going to be its own little area.

It’s quite a cool thing to have!

“Obviously having the shop at the front will help elevate things to the next level. The window you see, which is an open window, that’s the main look into the factory. So, while people are getting haircuts, you’ll see the industry. It’s like a jungle when everyone’s running around doing their thing. It’s a good show that the can see in the background.” Togs continues.

One of the main goal for the Cape Kings Barbershop Showroom is to run on a ‘booking in’ basis. This will leave barbers with the option to work with their own pre-booked clients, where they can work in a fantastic looking space at the same time.

Cape Kings specialises in many products, especially, you guessed it, premium capes. Togs explains that barbers aren’t necessarily ones to work in an environment where their uniforms will be un-fixable from a cleanliness standpoint. ith 2022 now in full swing it’s important that we are prepared as much as possible to make the year a great success.

Think about your service menu

Are there any additional men’s services you could be offering? Men no longer just want to come into the salon/ barbershop for a haircut anymore, they want to come for a pampering experience, which may include having a facial, manicure or even just adding some more hair or beard treatments. Talk to your clients now about what services they would like to see in the salon, do some research and offer something exciting to your loyal clients for the New Year, which may also attract new clients into the salon too if you’re offering something that your competitors aren’t.

Put in plans to motivate your team

Coming back from time off during the Christmas period to a quieter first few months of the year can be hard, and you want your team to be as motivated a possible to be able to deliver the very best services to your clients. Start to look at training sessions that may be available.

Training could be via yourself, another industry men’s hairdresser or barber, or even a men’s haircare brand. Keep your team inspired to allow them to ensure they want to deliver their very best when they come to work.

Communicate with your clients

Clients are they key to our success and we should always be communicating with them to encourage them to come

back to our salons/barbershops, and to show them that we care. It’s a good idea to put a plan into action on how to better communicate with clients in the New Year, be this via social media, newsletters or text message. Tell your clients what you have been working on and also inform them of anything new happening in your salon or barbershop.

This could be new products, new services, new team members or even any offers or discounts you are offering that may encourage them to visit during the

quieter months from January to March.

Keep your salon/barbershop looking its best

COVID has been around for some time now and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Clients want to feel comfortable when visiting your space and know that your cleanliness and safety measures are of a high standard. Take some time to have a clean and to ensure all safety measures are up to scratch. Take photos of your space looking as gleaming as ever to help attract clients, and to allow them to feel at ease when they visit.

Think about the months of spring/ summer

Although it’s only the start of the year, it’s a good idea to think about spring/ summer now, when you can become busier in the salon/barbershop with clients looking to update their look for the new season. Encourage clients to book in for their appointments in advance, and also start to think about any new treatments or services you can offer for the new season. Look at seasonal trends and adapt your menu to suit this.

ello, and welcome to an exciting look into the March issue of Barber Magazine. Next issue, we are keeping it all things ‘client’, where we will be diving into many of the aspects needed to attract, maintain and interact with your clients, as well as a number of other helpful tips and insights.

As usual, we will have our Essential Five feature, which will be looking at the best ways to attract people into your barbershop and how to turn those one off walk-ins into regular repeat business.

This might be through visual marketing in your shop window or social marketing where our regular contributor Chris Foster will be sharing his expert advice.

Our recurrent Barbers Around the World feature will be taking you to a distant land to check in on what our fellow overseas barber is doing, whilst the Lookbook feature will be bringing you the hottest looks. Plus, would you like to get involved in the magazine and seize the opportunity get featured in next month’s Lookbook? Use the hashtag #barbermaglookbook for a chance to be included and to show off your best work!

Our regular Rising Star feature will be looking at an up-and-coming barber and what they have done to grow and be noticed within the industry; there will always be something inspirational to take away from this!
