ANDY THORNTON VINTAGE STYLE

Andy Thornton is the exclusive European distributor for Shanker Industries who have been manufacturing authentic pressed metal tiles in the USA since 1896.

Over the years these tiles have been traditionally used for creating decorative ceiling and wall features, however they have many other applications—shop counters, bar fronts and any interior wall surface. They are used extensively in restaurant and bar interiors, as well as for retail and office environments.

Metal tiles can be supplied unfinished as shown. Please refer to pages 154–155 for guidance on special finishes.

Manufactured in high quality 0.25 mm steel, there is a wide range of designs to choose from. The tiles are easy to install, have good fire resistance and are low maintenance. They do not absorb sound, so are popular in many hospitality venues to help create atmosphere. However where acoustics are important, they can be supplied in perforated steel, allowing sound to be absorbed.

What size should you order? Each tile design is available in three size options to suit your preferred method of installation. The large rectangular 1220 × 610 mm format is used when choosing the traditional method of fixing (nailed onto wood grounds or plywood attached to the ceiling), which is still considered the most versatile for creating the authentic look. Alternatively, for easier installation, we offer square tiles to fit either imperial (610 × 610 mm), or metric (595 × 595 mm) suspended ceiling systems.

Note: Metal tiles are pressed from sheet steel and as a consequence will include imperfections in the detail of each tile.

We consider this part of the hand-crafted manufacturing process and in our opinion it does not detract from the overall effect.

Metal tiles are very sharp. Heavy duty gloves should be worn when handling the tiles.

The tiles are formed on an original ‘Mammoth’ power press, which dates back to 1896. This delivers 800 tons of force, ensuring consistent quality and sharp detail every time.

TILE FINISHES Our metal tiles are supplied unfinished and, if installed in a dry environment, can be left in their natural state. However, for places exposed to heat, humidity or condensation, we recommend and can quote for supplying finished in a clear polyurethane lacquer to provide complete protection against corrosion and tarnishing. Tiles can also be supplied pre-finished at additional cost in the metallic finishes shown here, or indeed in any RAL or BS colour.
