Research agenda CIMA is the only international professional qualification with a sole focus on accounting for business. Our position as the voice of global management accountancy is enhanced by our research programme, which generates leading edge, high calibre and authoritative results that have immediate practical influence and value.

CIMA’s Global Research Programme We encourage leading academic and practitioner researchers who are exploring issues and providing fresh perspectives on topics of interest to CIMA members, to apply for research grants through our initiative scheme. CIMA also offers collaborative funding and co-badging opportunities with other organisations.

Our global research activities include but are not limited to sponsoring: Research initiatives CIMA regularly calls for proposals on specific areas of management accountancy. These are advertised via our website as well as other media and there are no lower or upper limits on the level of funding.

Seedcorn initiatives are run annually.

The research strategy fosters the creation of a database of innovative and original thought which encourages us to challenge the way we perform our jobs.

The CIMA Centre of Excellence at the University of Bath School of Management This innovative research centre collaboration between CIMA and Bath University researches the changing role of the finance function and implications for the development of finance professionals.

Directed Research On occasion, CIMA will directly invite a specific researcher to submit a proposal on a given topic.

Badging and partnerships CIMA works with relevant partners to produce jointly branded research on substantive and topical thought leadership.

Events Given our global presence, CIMA is happy to sponsor influential, research-focused, practitioner friendly international conferences, workshops and seminars.

How we work...

As a world-leading authority, CIMA’s research programme is specifically designed to promote and develop the science of management accountancy, as stipulated in our Royal charter.

CIMA’s Research Board and Research Advisory Panel consists of independent academics and practitioners who provide their expertise and uphold the rigorous standards set by CIMA for our research programme. This is to ensure that our research, and related outputs, provides value to our membership.

CIMA’s Applied Research Unit works closely with researchers providing resource, support and guidance. One member of the team is the CIMA Professor.

As a leading global academic, the CIMA Professor is sponsored to advise on projects, to support the development of CIMA’s management accountancy authority and to be an ambassador for CIMA at key conferences.

CIMA takes a distinctive approach, supporting a portfolio of projects that range from early stage, exploratory work to tests of established theory. A common thread throughout is the aim to advance our understanding of the real world through applied research.

Research initiatives are typically launched twice a year, but we welcome partnering and badging proposals throughout the year.

Application process for research initiatives 1. Download the relevant research initiative flyer, application form, guidance notes and standard contract from our website.

2. Contact the Applied Research Unit to express interest, ask questions and get advice on policy, procedure and subjects.

3. It is essential that your university/organisation approves CIMA’s standard contract before you submit your application.

4. Submit your completed application pack.

5. Our Research Initiative Panels will perform a thorough review of your application.

6. If successful, you will be issued with a contract detailing outputs and funding.

CIMA’s research provides a much needed line of sight between high level thinking on business strategy, risk and leadership to the pivotal role of Finance Directors in grounding day to day board level decisions to secure both immediate returns and sustainable value creation.
