Annual Repor t 2024

Forging a responsible future together

Land acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the CIM National office is located on unceded Indigenous lands. Tiohtià:ke/Montreal is historically known as a major gathering place. We respect the continued connections with the past, present and future in our ongoing relationships with Indigenous and other peoples within the Montreal community.

President’s Message

CIM experienced a landmark year in 2024, marked by the launch of a new look for the Institute and the approval of a new Strategic Plan by Council, setting the foundation for a dynamic and impactful future. The rebranding of CIM, the first major refresh in over 50 years, presents an image that embodies our identity and our aim to grow community, collaboration and engagement. Our strategic plan, developed with input from our members, reflects our commitment to driving innovation, engagement, and growth.

The Strategic Plan considers key factors shaping our industry: declining enrollment in mining-related fields,

societal misperceptions of mining’s importance, and the transformative impact of the global pandemic on collaboration and delivery models.

It articulates a clear mission: to cultivate knowledge, foster best practices, and drive innovation to support members while advancing the industry’s role in society responsibly.

Our goals—embracing innovation, forging connections, and amplifying the industry’s voice—are underpinned by four strategic pillars:

Technical Excellence: Delivering differentiated content and premium professional development.

Strength and Resilience of Community: Enhancing meaningful interaction across our diverse stakeholder network.

Mining in Society: Championing public education and advocacy.

Operational Excellence: Leveraging technology and robust governance for efficiency and impact.

In alignment with this strategy, we launched our new brand at CIM CONNECT 2024 and invested in an updated financial platform. This, alongside our new AMS business platform, will streamline interactions between the National Office, societies, and branches, reinforcing our operational capabilities.

As part of our organizational strategy, we simplified our structure, consolidating twelve committees into four and streamlined governance through a revised bylaw review. A new Technical & Innovation Society was also approved by

Council, ensuring our focus remains aligned with industry advancements.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to Angela Hamlyn and the CIM National Office team, as well as our dedicated volunteers and members nationwide. Your unwavering commitment is the driving force behind our successes. To our new members: welcome to this vibrant community! Your expertise and passion strengthen our collective mission.

It has been an honour to serve as your president. As Candace McGibbon steps into the role for 2025/2026, I am confident that we will achieve even greater milestones in the coming year.

Thank you for your trust and support.

Read our strategic plan.

CEO’s Message

What an extraordinary year we’ve shared. Together, we transformed challenges into opportunities and demonstrated that when we unite in the interest of common goals, great things happen.

There’s no question that the industry’s desire for knowledge and networking is thriving as we saw robust attendance at our in-person events. In addition to our landmark annual convention, CIM CONNECT, our CIM MetSoc Conference of Metallurgists, CMP’s 56th Annual Conference, and many more, CIM launched two new topical conferences: Health & Safety and Mineral Resources & Mineral Reserves, both in October. These are in addition to the many other events that took place at local and regional levels within the thriving CIM community.

Thanks to the leadership of CIM Presidents Ian Pearce (2024-2025) and Michael Cinnamond (2023-2024), the CIM Council, and the exceptional volunteers working in our branches, societies, and committees, we made great strides

towards strengthening engagement across our network, while also taking important steps towards improving governance and operational excellence across the OneCIM ecosystem.

Our collective effort has been focused on reducing obstacles through better internal systems and processes. Embedded within our new strategic plan is an imperative to continue optimizing accountability, transparency, stakeholder engagement, and risk management towards greater efficiency and impact.

This past year, we collaborated closely with our corporate members and industry to advance our shared priorities. The presentations at CIM CONNECT were shaped to better address industry challenges.

CIM provides a unique platform where practitioners at every level of experience can converge to tackle pressing challenges and drive innovation. We look forward to setting out on our refreshed strategic journey in 2025 and delivering on our Horizon One objectives towards a stronger and even more connected organization.

I am truly proud that CIM supports all our members on their career journeys and that we are a fundamental part of our industry’s continued growth and success. My heartfelt thanks go to National Office staff, CIM Presidents Ian Pearce and Michael Cinnamond, CIM Council, and the hundreds of amazing volunteers across OneCIM who power this organization, and for their trust and confidence in our mission.

Operational Excellence

CIM is dedicated to enhancing and streamlining our services for both our members and the broader industry. We’re building foundational strength with better technology and transparent processes to deliver exceptional value. Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures that we consistently provide high quality service that meets our members’ evolving needs.

Improved governance and bylaw review

Over the past year, we began a comprehensive review of by-laws and governance structures across CIM. Our ecosystem is complex, and ensuring CIM’s relevance and sustainability far into the future is essential. We continue to work with societies and branches to ensure transparency and manage risk.

Advancing engagement through strategic restructure

As part of our ongoing commitment to the CIM community and the wider minerals, metals, and energy industries, we are introducing significant changes in line with our new strategic plan. CIM committees and societies aligned with our organizational goals and positioned to maximize engagement, growth, and operational excellence.

This new reporting structure that will see improved governance, accountability, and transparency across our operations, ensuring that we remain agile and responsive to the needs of our community.

New management systems

In 2024, we launched Phase One of our new Association Management System (AMS), designed to enhance member engagement and ensure data accuracy across branches and societies. Our current AMS focus is on optimizing six key areas, including the E-Shopper Module, and Client Relationship Management Module.

Among the immediate steps we have taken to enact this strategy is the evolution of the Geological Society of CIM into the Mineral Resources Mineral Reserves Society.

Coming soon will be a new innovation and technology society dedicated to accelerating digitalization across the industry.

CIM’s adoption of NetSuite, a cloud-based accounting system, marks a significant step towards enhanced organizational efficiency. This strategic investment supports improved transparency and real-time insights into financial data and performance metrics. The platform’s scalability will support our growth and that of our branches and societies, eliminating the need for major system overhauls in the future.

THANK YOU!

Your support helps us provide high quality professional development resources. Find out how you can benefit by becoming a CIM industry partner or corporate member.

President-Elect’s Message

I am honoured and excited to participate in the execution of the shared vision that will guide CIM and its members, sponsors and volunteers this year. The challenges and opportunities we face as a community underscore the importance of our mission and the strategic priorities that will focus our efforts in 2025 and beyond.

Our first priority remains the pursuit of technical excellence. Innovation is the cornerstone of our industry’s future, and CIM will continue to provide leading technical resources, knowledge-sharing platforms, and professional development opportunities to empower our members. Through our renowned conferences, publications, and educational programs, we will build on our legacy of delivering innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of the mining, metallurgy, and petroleum sectors.

Equally important is fostering the strength and resilience of our community. Our industry thrives because of its

people—the dedicated professionals who drive progress and innovation. As we embrace the future, CIM will remain a hub for collaboration, inclusivity, and mentorship. We are committed to creating an environment where all voices are heard, talents are nurtured, and partnerships flourish.

A key focus for the coming year is delivering operational excellence within the organization to serve our community of members, societies and branches. CIM is dedicated to ensuring efficient delivery of services to its members by investing in digital platforms, streamlining workflows, and maintaining a commitment to financial sustainability; to enhance the value we provide to our community.

Finally, we recognize the importance of mining in society and our role as industry participants to amplify our voices. Global priorities continue to focus on sustainability, resource efficiency, and energy transition, and our industry is poised to play a pivotal role in the development of a new paradigm using innovation and embracing new technologies. CIM will continue to advocate for the critical role that resources play in advancing modern society, from supporting green technologies to contributing to economic development. By championing responsible practices and engaging with stakeholders, we will reinforce our industry’s positive impact on the world.

This is a pivotal moment for our industry, and I am honoured to have the opportunity to work with each of you for the advancement of CIM and our members. I invite you to join me in pursuing our strategic priorities with passion and purpose. Together, we will ensure a future for CIM and our industry

defined by progress, resilience, and shared success.

I would like to thank Ian Pearce as the outgoing President for his commitment and leadership over the past year. Ian led the development of the strategic plan, and his continued efforts will have a lasting impact on CIM and our industry for years to come.

Thank you for your dedication to CIM and I look forward to the journey ahead.
