The European Summer International Law Experience at Widener University School of Law
Widener University School of Law summer institutes in Europe provide law students with the unique opportunity to build their own "Summer International Law Experience".
Widener's programs in Lausanne, Switzerland and Venice, Italy have been designed with student needs in mind. Each program consists of two 2-week segments and students have numerous options when enrolling in courses.
Students can select from the following options:
■ Students with a limited amount of free time in the summer can select any one of the two-week segments and spend 2 weeks in Europe studying international law and then return home for the rest of the summer.
■ Students with more time can select one two-week segment in Lausanne and one 2-week segment in Venice or take 2 segments in one location for a month long summer experience.
■ Students with lots of free time can select the first two-week segment in Lausanne, spend the next 2 weeks traveling through Europe, and then select the last 2-week segment in Venice for a complete summer European experience.
The myriad of options available in our European Summer Law programs mean that almost every student can build a personal program to meet his or her educational, financial, and personal goals.

As a student in our Lausanne Summer Law Institute, you have the opportunity to study abroad in Lausanne, Switzerland, a breathtakingly beautiful city near Geneva, which is known throughout the world as an international center for law, policy, and diplomacy. Widener students have been traveling to Switzerland for a unique and exciting summer program since 1991.
We typically have 15 to 20 students enrolled. Last year our program cancelled due to low enrollment but we have restructured and our program has a brand new look. The biggest change from other programs is the move to Lausanne, where we will be hosted by the University of Lausanne’s law school. The University of Lausanne is Switzerland’s largest, but Lausanne remains charming and accessible. Lausanne has been the home of the highest Swiss federal court of appeal since 1874, and home to the International Olympic committee since 1915.
Program changes— we have a new, more user-friendly location, a new academic host, and a new, shorter course format, which will allow students to choose from (i) more travel time after completing course work, (ii) taking a second set of courses in our Venice program, or (iii) returning home earlier, for summer work or other activities.

Venice, Italy
Considered by many as the most beautiful city in the world, Venice, situated in northeastern Italy, is a city of islands (118 to be exact), canals, bridges, gondoliers, churches and piazzas. Say “Ciao” to cars and be propelled back in time in this thousand year old city in the heart of the Veneto.
Italy is known for its fabulous food, wine and friendly people. Studying this summer in Venice will let you experience all that Italy has to offer. Italy is bordered on the north by Switzerland, France, and Austria. Greece is easily accessible by ferry. Students who want to travel on the weekends can easily travel to southern Italy, head to Eastern Europe, or train to France, Switzerland, Austria or Germany for a short visit. Nearby, the outdoor Roman amphitheater in Verona offers summer opera with international stars. The Dolomite mountains are nearby for a weekend of hiking. Last year, 17 students studied with us in Venice. This year we have restructured and our program has a brand new look. We have two sessions, the first from June 15-June 26, the second from July 1-July 15. Three credits will be offered each session. The program is scheduled to permit students to: 1) take 4-6 credits in Venice over the course of the two sessions OR 2) take 2-3 credits in Widener’s Geneva/Lausanne, Switzerland program and then 2-3 credits in the Venice program from June 1-June 27 or June 15-July 15 OR 3) take 2-3 credits in one session in Venice only.

Nairobi summer program is an extraordinary academic and cultural experience that will change the way you view the world. Since 1988 Widener has operated this summer program in partnership with the University of Nairobi. Kenya is one of the most beautiful and interesting places in the world. It is justly famous for its extraordinary national parks teeming with wildlife, beautiful beaches on the Indian Ocean, and excellent hiking in the mountains including Mt. Kilimanjaro
Enjoy the cultural experience of living in a beautiful country with world famous wilderness reserves and beautiful beaches on the Indian Ocean while studying the law from both Kenyan and American faculty. The program has been arranged to help you get the most out of your experience.

Typically, 10 or more Kenyan law students participate in the program as well as law students drawn from many law schools around the U.S. We have also expanded the number of group activities and coordinated them with the material you will be studying in your courses. The Institute will offer three two-credit courses: International Environmental Law and Trade, Comparative Constitutional Law, and Comparative Family Law. We have scheduled three group safaris and a trip to the Indian Ocean. There will be tours of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Kenyan law courts.

Though many changes in Sydney have occurred since its formation as a prison settlement, there has been preserved through time historical buildings and places that tell stories of a past time.
Why not explore this history with us. This is the 14th year of Widener University’s Sydney International Law Institute. We are very proud of our outstanding international faculty and of the range of courses and activities that we offer. Last year, 17 students studied in Sydney. We had students from West Virginia, Barry School of Law and the University of Ottawa. The site of the Institute is the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), which is located in the heart of downtown Sydney in the central business district.

UTS is centrally located to major attractions (the Opera House, Darling Harbour, Chinatown, and the Circular Quay) and convenient to all public transportation – ferries, trains, buses, and even a monorail. UTS offers modern classroom facilities and access to information technology services, including legal databases.
During our stay in Australia, we will visit Canberra and the Parliament House where we will witness “question time” in both the House and the Senate. Question time is unique to parliamentary systems and allows the opposing party to question the Prime Minister and members of his or her cabinet. We also plan to visit the High Court (Australia’s highest court) and the court’s chambers.

Application Requirements
Application Deadline April 20, 2009
To be eligible for Widener’s study abroad programs you must:
Complete one year of full- or part-time law studies comprising the required first-year law courses at any ABA-approved law school.
Widener students must have a 2.3 GPA.
Fill out and submit a formal application.
Provide a $100 non-refundable application fee.
Provide a letter of good standing from your law school.
Tuition must be paid before arrival at the program.
Formal acceptance into the program can only be granted once all application requirements are fulfilled.
ABA Approved
All of our programs are approved by the American Bar Association. Our courses may be credited toward your law degree at an ABA approved institution if your law school accepts credits from summer programs. A transcript of grades will be sent to each student and to their home law school. Acceptance of any credit or grade for any course is subject to determination by the student's home school. It is unlikely that participation in a Study Abroad Program may be used to accelerate graduation. Consult with your school's registrar. Students are permitted to take from one to six credits during the summer.

Cancellation Policy
In the event of a cancellation of a program, Widener will make our best efforts to arrange for applicant to attend a similar program not just a similar Widener program or all money advanced by the student to Widener University School of Law will be refunded within twenty (20) days after the date of cancellation.
