DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS: On the following pages you will read how Widener Law is making significant contributions to American legal education, to the legal profession, and to the communities in which we are located.
Our full-time faculty are becoming more internationally known through their scholarship and leadership. Justices from the highly respected Delaware Supreme Court and judges from state and federal courts in several states continue to serve among our adjunct faculty. We are rigorously training Widener Law students to be well-rounded citizen lawyers who will step into leadership roles of their own. Ninety-one percent of the Class of 2006 were employed or in graduate school within nine months of graduation—our best figure in 10 years.
While most of our 12,000 living alumni are concentrated in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York, Widener graduates can be found across the country and in foreign locations. These great lawyers are being honored for their skills and are being elected to the bench and other significant government posts.
Widener Law is a unique law center in America. We have campuses in two states as well as programs around the world, and we train individuals from post-high school to the judiciary. JUSTICE RANDY J. HOLLANDof the Delaware Supreme Court is one of Widener Law’s many accomplished adjunct faculty. Over the last year alone Justice Holland coauthored the acclaimed Middle Temple Lawyers and the American Revolution and received the American Inns of Court’s prestigious A. Sherman Christensen Award for providing distinguished, exceptional, and significant leadership to the American Inns of Court movement.

Linking Law and Public Health
IN MAY Widener University School of Law and Thomas Jefferson Unive rsity announced the launch of two new joint-degree programs in law and public health.
Students can work toward either a juris doctor and master of public health ( JD-MPH), or a master of jurisprudence in health law and master of public health (MJ-MPH). These two new dual degrees are designed to prepare students who are pursuing careers in fields such as public health administration, health insurance organization leadership, health consulting, and the pharmaceutical industry. They can be completed in three to seven years, depending on which program the student chooses and whether enrollment is part- or full-time.
“This partnership brings together two leading institutions in a growing and important field,” Dean Linda L. Ammons said.
“We are pleased to join Jefferson in this exciting endeavor.”

Launching a New Scholarly Endeavor
A NEWLAWJOURNAL,conceived by Widener students last year and funded with a generous grant from the law firm of Maron Marvel Bradley & Anderson, will focus on the intersection of law, economics, and race.
The Widener Journal of Law, Economics, and Race, an idea generated and developed by students Robert Hawkins, Tamika Crawl-Bey, and Dana Griffin, will be disseminated in a completely electronic format beginning during the 2007-08 academic year. It will be a collaborative endeavor involving students on both the Wilmington and Harrisburg campuses.
“ The Journal will se r ve as a training ground where we emphasize for our students the importance of becoming ‘good citizens’ as they become leaders in business and government,” wrote Mr. Hawkins, Ms. Crawl-Bey, and Ms. Griffin in their grant proposal.

Recognizing Special Achievement WIDENER LAW Professor Juliet M. Moringiello received the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Special Achievement Award in June for her efforts toward making Pennsylvania a more businessfriendly state.
The award recognizes Professor Moringiello’s role in the Uniform Commercial Code enactment process. She chairs the Uniform Commercial Code Committee of PBA’s Business Law Section, playing a leading role in promoting the enactment in Pe nnsylva nia of two revised Unifor m Commercial Code articles: Article 1, setting forth the general provisions of the code, and Article 7, providing the rules governing the use of documents of title in commercial transactions.
Professor Moringiello has been involved in the Uniform Commercial Code enactment process since the late 1990s, when Pennsylvania was considering the enactment of Article 9, governing secured transactions. She teaches and writes primarily in the areas of commercial law, bankruptcy, property, and electronic commerce.
Juliet M. Moringiello was recognized by the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
Fighting for Benefits
WITHSTATEFUNDING from Delaware and Pennsylvania, Widener’s Veterans Law Clinic has collected, on a pro bono basis, more than $1 million for disabled veterans and their dependents since its launch in 1997. It is the only clinic of its kind in Pennsylvania and one of only two in the United States. The Clinic’s director, Widener Law Professor Thomas J. Reed, participated in a roundtable discussion in May in Washington, D.C., at the invitation of Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif., chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The discussion was among the U.S. De pa rtment of Veterans Affairs, claims stakeholders, and members of the committee Filner chairs. Professor Reed spoke during a discussion of ideas to reduce the claims backlog and improve the current process for veterans.

The Constitution as Symbol
ALAN E. GARFIELD,whose term as Widener’s H. Albert Young Fellow in Constitutional Law ended in June, discussed “The Constitution as a Symbol” when he delivered the Young Fellowship Lecture in April.
In his remarks Professor Garfield, who teaches and writes in areas of constitutional law, the First Amendment, copyright, and contracts, explored how the Constitution is important not only for what it says, but also for what it symbolizes. He examined the role of religion in American society and addressed such controversial topics as the teaching of intelligent design and the display of Ten Commandments monuments.
The H. Albert Young Fellowship in Constitutional Law was endowed in 1998 by the Young Foundation of Wilmington in honor of the late H. Albert Young, a highly respected attorney and former Delaware attorney general. The fellowship enables a Widener Law professor to conduct and publish research in the area of Delaware or U.S. constitutional law.

Rebuilding a Legal System
NINE WIDENER LAW students from the Delaware campus, accompanied by two professors and a civic-minded Philadelphia public defender, spent a week of their winter break taking part in the Katrina-Gideon Interview Project, a national initiative through which law student volunteers traveled to New Orleans to assist the beleaguered Public Defender’s Office there as it tries to catch up on the backlog of cases caused by Hurricane Katrina. s upe r vised the students’ work, and the group was also accompanied by Everett Gillison, a public defender in Philadelphia’s homicide division. The students who participated all graduated in May. STANDOUTSTUDENTS were honored in April at each campus’s Annual Student Awards Ceremony.
Darlene Ghavimi-Alagha (Delaware) and Elizabeth F. Murdock (Harrisburg) received the Dean’s Award, for outstanding legal aptitude, exemplar y service, significant leadership skills, and the potential to become an outstanding member of the legal community. The President’s Award, for demonstrated scholastic achievement and high potential for meaningful contribution to the law school, the community, and the profession, went to Janine Hochberg (Delaware) and Nicole E. Carter (Harrisburg). Dozens of other awards in scholarship and achievement were handed out, and more than 70 graduating students were honored for performing at least 50 hours of pro bono legal services during law school.
C. Grainger Bowman presents the James S. Bowman American Inn of Court Award to student John Geschwindt. Bowman, his wife Sandra, and the Inn sponsor the award, which recognizes academic excellence in the area of administrative law.

The Ruby R . Vale Foundation funds the Ruby R. Vale Professorship, whose holde r, Lawrence A. Ha me rmesh, was appointed chairman of the Committee on Corporate Practice of t he ABA’s section of business law. The committee has a membership of more than 320. Professor Hamermesh teaches and writes in the areas of corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, securities regulation, business orga nizations, corporate takeovers, and professional responsibility, and has been quoted in such media outlets as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Financial Times
In addition, the Ruby R . Vale Interschool Corporate Moot Court Competition brought 24 teams representing 20 different law schools to the Ruby R. Florida State University College of Law bested Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law as overall winner; best oralist was awarded to a student from the College of William and Mary’s Marshall Wythe School of Law, and best brief went to Florida State. The Vale Competition will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2008. Over the last two decades, approximately 1,000 student competitors have come to the Law School to participate; they have been joined by many faculty and student coaches as well as distinguished visiting scholars.

Honoring a Pioneer’s Legacy
SHEILA SALVANT-VALENTINE,MD, a student in Widener’s Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law Program, was named an Albert Schweitzer Fellow by the Delaware Valley Schweitzer Fellows Program.
Dr. S alvant-Valentine’s fellowship project involves community service aimed at the Haitian community. She will spend more than 200 hours over the course of a year, through Delmarva Rural Ministries, focusing on health care access for Haitian immigrants. Her work will primarily involve translation and education regarding cardiovascular disease and risk.

A NEWANNUALLECTURESERIES honoring a beloved, longtime professor, mentor, and administrator debuted in April on the Harrisburg campus.
The inaugural John Gedid Lecture, recognizing the director of the Law School’s Law and Government Institute, welcomed Melissa Waters, associate professor at Washington and Lee University School of Law, who discussed the war-crimes trial of former Iraq President Saddam Hussein. Waters trained Iraqi judges and attorneys in international human rights law and criminal defense law; some of those judges went on to preside over Hussein’s trial.
Supporting the Gedid Lecture series are Aspen Publishing and the Harrisburg faculty. There is an ongoing effort to obtain gifts to endow the John Gedid Lecture.
Dedicating a Library, Honoring a Founder
MORETHAN 40 ALUMNI gathered in May to celebrate the dedication of the Alfred Avins Special Collections Library at the Law School’s Delaware Campus. The event honored Dean Avins, the founder of Widener Law, and was the culmination of a fundraising campaign in his honor to benefit the Special Collections Library and a scholarship in Dean Avins’ name.
Attendees traveled to downtown Wilmington to tour what is now the Sharon Temple Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Church was the home of the School of Law during its early years.
Alfred Avins founded the Delaware Law School in 1971. His determination and resourcefulness were remembered with gratitude by all who contributed to the fund in his honor.
