Watching a film for the first time is a thrilling experience, especially when it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Independent local films are exciting to watch because, as Forrest Gump said, you’ll never know what you’re going to get.
The country has multiple local film festivals year-round, whether national, regional, or even interschool competitions. But do you remember that CIIT has its own film festival?
Sine Siklab is a film festival concept founded by Ryven Rabang, former 24 Frames President, in 2019. The name came from the words “sine” for the representation of Filipino cinema, and “siklab” from the word “pasiklaban” or to show the best in people through competitions.
The film festival started as an interschool competition, where filmmakers on the campus entered their films, told their stories, and hoped to win the grand prize. The first Sine Siklab debuted with its theme, “Blazing Start” which focused on introducing a new era for the organization and in celebration of its 5th anniversary. The triumphant debut opened its doors to introducing CIIT’s finest filmmakers to showcase their films to the CIIT community.
With the first film festival being a successful run, Sine Siklab 2020 was welcomed by a challenge as the COVID outbreak started around its preparations. But that didn’t stop the organization from continuing the Siklab legacy.
Sine Siklab 2020 transitioned from onsite into a virtual film festival to push through with the event, widening the
opportunities for colleges and universities to join Sine Siklab. The film festival was opened for entries nationwide, receiving 38 film entries in total. With the theme, “Burn Brighter”, 24 Frames attempts to empower people through films despite the challenges we may face, despite the height of the pandemic.
Besides the most awaited film screenings and awarding ceremony, the film organization had two Sine Siklab Masterclasses, with the first Masterclass from filmmaker Law Chen (Filmmaking in the New Normal) and actor Elijah Canlas (Acting for New Media). For the second Masterclass, they had filmmaker Celina Medina (Advanced Techniques for Cinematography) and video editor Ivan Gonzales (Advanced Techniques for Film Editing). And to get hyped for the awarding ceremony, MASTERCLASS PRO was held as a 1 hour live Q&A session for the Sine Siklab Jury and the Top 15 directors to answer any film-related questions from the audiences.
We have yet to watch an abundance of films out there, not just the famous ones we see on known streaming platforms. This is a sign to support our local filmmakers because our support keeps the Filipino film industry alive.
It’s been two years since the Sine Siklab. But rumor has it that it’s coming back this year! According to Elijah Oshea Garcia, the current 24 Frames President, the film organization will be reviving the anticipated flaming film festival. As he stated, “malapit na lumiyab muli ang Sine Siklab”.

Whether it’s the nostalgia factor or the relatability, there are certain films that never fail to bring us to our happy place. Comfort films don’t have to be soft movies, they don’t even have to be happy movies. The genre doesn’t matter, as long as the film can brighten your mood in dire circumstances. Several CIITzens shared their comfort films and what made them special.
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Me & Earl & The Dying Girl (2015), The Fabelmans (2022) Banana, BMMA - Film
These films made me love film making kaya everytime I would watch these, ginaganahan ako gumawa ng own film projects ko. And they really are comforting in different way na hindi ko ma-explain. Once you watch yung mga films na ‘to, you’ll understand hehehe <3
Kung Fu Hustle (2004) Eleana, BMMA - Film
Since watching it as a child, it is one of the films that never fail to make me laugh and still takes my breath away from the amazing visuals and fight scenes each time I rewatch it on TV or watch clips online, it’s a good pick me up during low moments where I just want to heal my inner child.
Yesterday(2019)
Mawdz, BMMA-Film
Even of you’re not a massive fan of The Beatles, you still get to appreciate their warm melodies when you watch this film. Other than its music, what I love most about this film is just the mood and emotions you feel while watching, it just feels calm and peaceful. I would highly recommend this film as well as other films written by Richard Curtis.
Pearl (2022), The Witch (2015), and Possession (1981)
Alissa, BMMA - Graphic Design
I consider these horror films as my comfort films bc just like Anya Taylor-Joy, I have a thing about feminine rage. <3
Klarize Bangit, BMMA - Graphic Design
This is a coming-of-age film that I wish I had seen when I was younger. Nadine, a socially awkward teenager, suffers from depression and social anxiety after the death of her father. In this film, Nadine represents a lot of teenagers who are struggling to figure out the range of emotions that they feel, which is easily dismissed as “Teen angst” when, in fact, these emotions are all valid, and this movie provides an epiphany to the question, what if someone just helped us understand and manage these feelings instead of seeing them as invalid?
Zash, BMMA - Graphic Design
I enjoy the visuals and the whimsical vibe it brings which is ironic because it’s an animated horror film. I find the soundtrack oddly calming as well.

As a film student, there will always be that one film that leaves a massive impression on our lives. A butterfly effect that pushes us to pursue film courses! Continue and see if you can relate or see some movies that also inspired you!
Generally, horror/fantasy/slice of life films are what inspired me in filmmaking, madadami akong influences such as Perfect Blue, The Craft, Saving Sally, Sid & Aya, Fight Club, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Bliss, Heathers, etc. Madami pa AHAHAHAHAHAH. I think the reason kung bakit nagustuhan ko yung mga films given below is because merong emotional realism, resonance and complexity sa narrative and sa characters esp writing a story that hits deeply with well-done cinematic shots, na mapa slice of life man yan, horror or fantasy, may touch of reality pa din that makes it engaging and not mundane.
I think yung pinaka-nagpa-”WOW” sa’kin na gusto ko yung pelikula was 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten (2016) ni Direk Petersen Vargas. Yung pagka-hilig ko kasi sa film nag-start lang siya when I was in Senior High, and then nung around 2016 I’ve been watching indie films gano’n for the artsy vibes but nung napanuod ko yung 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten (2016), sobrang nag-resonate sa’kin yung film? To the point na napaisip ako na, “Wow, I think gusto ko rin makagawa ng gan’tong pelikula.”. Kasi yung core ng aking filmmaking is more of telling the untold stories of the LGBTQ+, kasi I believe that we deserve to have the same spotlight and stories with that of those heterosexuals gano’n, kumbaga it comes with own expreriences ganon!
Paper Towns (2016). Although it was a Book to Movie adaptation from Author, John Green but basically, the story itself was the Inspiration. originally I wanted to be an Author as someone who was raised in Fanfiction and seeing one of your favorite books come to life (and getting disappointed because the characters didn’t look like what you imagined) inspired me to create and tell stories, not just to emulate my favorite authors and vloggers during the tumblr era of 2014. but to inspire and instill hope to angsty teenage kids who feel lost. Like the coming of age media I consumed back then.
Miss Americana (2020). One of the many films that inspire me to continue creating til this day is Taylor Swift’s first film documentary, Miss Americana. As a Swiffer and a 6ft blondie enthusiast, I couldn’t help but fall in love with this film over and over again. I am really not the type to enjoy documentaries at all, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that Taylor’s documentary has inspired me on so many levels. Her film didn’t only tackle her dazzling life in the entertainment industry, but she was also able to connect with the viewers as she told the truth about what was happening behind the cameras. Likewise, she was also able to tackle so many intimate, romantic, yet at the same time sensitive and political aspects she has been through in her career.
Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral (2018).
The film that inspire me is called Where The Wild Things Are (2009) directed by Spike Jonze. This is one of the best film I ever watched in my opinion, because somehow I think it’s everyone story like “all the wild things they stir up within the grown-up.” basically the film’s meaning is “the effect a child’s emotions”

My favorite moment in CIIT is when we organized an event called “Sine Sembreak,” because after how many years of being stuck in the pandemic, we were able to organize an event wherein student film makers had a chance to do short films again
Advice to the CIITZENS:
I think the only advice that I can give to CIITZENS is to try to balance time for school work and personal lives. Yes, schoolwork can be heavy, but as long as you’re in the right circle and you try to balance things between academics and life, it will make your life easier.

Whether you’re a casual movie-watcher or a self-proclaimed cinephile, you’ve probably encountered the term “coming-of-age”, especially when used in film genres. Let’s quickly define what counts as a film that is “coming-of-age” and why it is important for teenagers and adolescents.
Coming-of-age is a genre that primarily explores the protagonist’s (usually a young teenager) journey and transition into adulthood or a more mature stage in life. Usually in a coming-of-age film, the young protagonist undertakes a responsibility that is fairly new to them and haven’t encountered before — this includes them being in their first relationship, or finding their identity, or basically the protagonists undergoing something wrong in their life that turns into some sort of lesson at the ending.
This genre is very important, especially for its targeted audience, because coming-of-age films (and books alike) portray the very feeling of growing up and transitioning from one stage of your life to another, and it’s something that the majority of the audiences can relate to. Coming of age films takes us back to those journeys and memories, and everything else that we’ve been through.
In line with coming-of-age films, here are some local film suggestions that you could watch and live your “main character” moment:

I joined Obelisk when I got an email saying that I got “Obe-fied,” which I am thankful and honored to recieve. I liked writing articles, although I never considered myself a writer because I grew up writing originally for school essays and research. I was also part of journalism clubs in my elementary and high school, so I decided to give it a try.
One of my best memories with Obelisk would be the awards night with Troi and Chi as the hosts. It was my first time joining an award night in Obelisk too. It was memorable because I had so much fun socializing and getting to know different people inside the organization.
One particular activity that I so vividly remember was the 2 truths, 1 lie game where each of us had to share facts about ourselves and let others guess which one is a bluff. After that, I learned so much interesting things from my org mates, some of which made me go SHEESH (which cannot be disclosed here for privacy reasons lol), and I enjoyed hearing their life stories too.
I also remember playing spymaster with everyone, where one of us has to guess who’s the spy by throwing questions to each other. The spymaster had to guess what object are we referring to, and it’s hilarious how we make it sound as if the object has some
shady innuendo while we try to keep a straight face to throw as little clue as possible. I’m impressed how ate AB was able to guess it correctly despite our effort to make it sound misleading, but I still hold grudge to those who voted me out believing I was the spy haha.
Lastly and the most memorable part of the event is the officers bidding farewell as they step down from their positions. The way the hosts thank the officers for serving Obelisk by putting their portraits beside flying doves plus a white staircase and a cloudy sky backdrop as if they were on a Filipino funeral tarpaulin had me in tears laughing. Not to mention, someone had to play Maalala ala mo kaya while the officers say their goodbyes to everyone (bawas points tayo sa langit).
Although I didn’t win from any of the games, the experience makes a good prize, and that’s more than enough for me. It was one of my treasured memories of my college life.

The love language of appreciation is that a person feels more loved when their partner offers them praises, compliments, and gratitude.
Emotional love language might be one of the most important to consider. Individuals that are supported by their partners at their vulnerable times makes them feel appreciated and loved.
This love language mostly exert efforts on being with your partner while participating at their hobbies or interests. These activities may become more enjoyable while doing it with them. In this love language, your partner will feel more valued with the activities you do together.
Financial love language is more focused on giving resources to your partner. Spending money to provide happiness is important for people who uses this love language. There are different ways to express the financial love language just like giving presents or giving importance to you and your partner’s financial management.
The physical love language is a common love language. If your partner has this love language, they feel more affectionate from your hugs, snuggles, and holding hands. They may also express their love towards you by initiating some of these actions.
People constantly exchange ideas and principles. If you feel loved when your partner value your opinions, ideas, and your intelligence, this love language might be yours. The intellectual love language involves a lot of meaningful discussions about varying topics. Your partner feels more attached when thoughts and discussions are genuinely shared.
Everyone has daily duties and responsibilities. The practical love language is felt when their partner offers initiative to help them ease loads of tasks. From simple house cleaning to shopping, the thought and effort to help your partner is a great way to express your care for them.
