IGARRO DOMINICANO, arriba a su Decimocuarta Edición Impresa, celebrando los éxitos y el crecimiento de nuestro Sector Tabacalero, en general, marcando un hito en nuestra trayectoria, tras la situación nacional e internacional vivida durante el año 2020 y que está continuando durante este 2021, publicando esta tercera revista impresa en este 2021.

En esta esperada edición, del Único Medio Especializado de la Industria del Tabaco y del Cigarro Premium, editada en la República Dominicana para el Mundo, el público lector podrá conocer a detalle las nuevas líneas de cigarros que pueden encontrar en el mercado; así como conocer el desarrollo de este importante sector, el cual ha crecido más del 50 por ciento en estos últimos meses y su proyección es seguir creciendo de forma ordenada y paulatina.

IGARRO DOMINICANO, arrives at its Fourteenth Printed Edition, celebrating the successes and growth of our Tobacco Sector, in general, marking a milestone in our trajectory, after the national and international situation experienced during 2020 and which is continuing during this 2021, publishing this third printed magazine this year.

In this long-awaited edition of the Unique Specialized Medium of the Tobacco and Premium Cigar Industry, published in the Dominican Republic for the World, readers will be able to know in detail the new cigar lines available in the market; as well as knowing the development of this important sector, which has grown more than 50 percent in recent months and its projection is to continue growing in an orderly and gradual manner.

Esta consistencia en la fabricación de un producto artesanal y todo lo que conlleva lograrlo, combinado además con la más alta calidad, ha sido la clave del éxito en estos 30 años de fabricación de los cigarros Davidoff en República Dominicana.

Para conocer más sobre esta valiosa trayectoria de treinta años y la filosofía de la empresa, la revista CIGARRO DOMINICANO ha entrevistado, en exclusiva, a Hamlet Espinal, Gerente General de Tabadom Holding y Vicepresidente Jefe de Producción Global de Oettinger Davidoff AG, con quien hemos hablado de su trayectoria profesional, pero también, del riguroso sistema que la empresa ha desarrollado para lograr calidad y consistencia en la fabricación de sus famosos cigarros premium hechos a mano y la alineación entre la casa matriz y la fábrica, para llevar a buen término su filosofía “Crop-to-Shop”, de modo que nuestros lectores, a nivel internacional, conozcan más sobre

esta icónica marca, y disfruten, aún más, de sus cigarros Davidoff.

PERFIL PROFESIONAL DE HAMLET ESPINAL CIGARRO DOMINICANO: ¿Cómo y cuándo empieza a trabajar en Tabadom?

HAMLET ESPINAL: Entré formalmente a trabajar en Tabadom el 13 de mayo de 1998. En ese momento, buscaba una empresa en la que pudiera desarrollarme tanto personal como profesionalmente. Pero, sobre todo, buscaba un entorno en el que pudiera sentir, vivir y compartir mi pa-

sión por el tabaco y, en particular, por los cigarros premium hechos a mano. Mi padre, quien dirigía una compañía procesadora de tabaco me presentó a Henke Kelner y así fue, como se me abrieron las puertas en Tabadom.

CD: Cuéntenos sobre su crecimiento profesional en esta compañía de tabaco internacional.

HE: Mi primera posición dentro de Tabadom fue en el área de anillado de cigarros, donde tenía que cambiar los cigarros, que no cumplían con los criterios de calidad. Solo seis meses después, tuve la oportunidad de dirigir y desarrollar el cuarto de ligas y algunos años después, mi área de responsabilidades se amplió y llegué a administrar las operaciones de la procesadora de tabaco (relacionadas con nuestro propio cultivo) ubicadas en Jicomé, mientras seguía administrando y dirigiendo el cuarto de ligas. Un año después, me otorgaron el resto de las operaciones de la procesadora de tabaco, incluyendo también la capa y el capote.

En 2008, fui nombrado Gerente de Operaciones en Tabadom, responsable de todas nuestras fábricas de cigarros, y en 2015, fui nombrado Gerente General de Tabadom Holding. Finalmente, hace cuatro años, en junio de 2017, fui nombrado Vicepresidente Jefe de Producción Global de Oettinger Davidoff, responsable de todos los lugares de producción del grupo en República Dominicana y Honduras.

CD: ¿Cómo ha influido en su carrera el poder de esta famosa marca de puros?

HE: De la manera más emocionante y positiva.

He tenido la increíble oportunidad de crecer junto con la empresa. Gracias a esta experiencia he podido aprender, experimentar, monitorear e interpretar todos los aspectos relacionados con una marca de alta gama a nivel global, como lo es Davidoff.

Soy un apasionado de mi trabajo y consciente de la gran responsabilidad que tengo. Para asegurarme de que estemos dando los pasos correctos y de que continuamos ofreciendo cigarros que cumplan con las expectativas de nuestros aficionados, en cuanto a experiencias gustativas únicas, calidad y consistencia, me he estado educando continuamente a nivel personal y profesional.

“2021 marca un año especial en la historia de Oettinger Davidoff y Tabadom. El 30 aniversario de la “nueva generación de Cigarros Davidoff” hechos a mano en la República Dominicana, así como de nuestra filosofía "Crop-to-Shop".

CD: ¿Qué le depara el futuro cercano a Hamlet en Tabadom / Oettinger Davidoff?

HE: A medida que crece el mundo de los cigarros premium, también crece mi compromiso de crear y liderar el desarrollo de nuevas experiencias gustativas para deleitar y sorprender a nuestros aficionados de todo el mundo. Siempre estoy buscando nuevas formas de cómo agregar valor y cómo superarnos en nuestro día a día. Basado en este enfoque, puedo decir que tenemos varios proyectos y que todos parten de nuestra filosofía “Crop-to Shop”, todos ellos anclados en tres ejes principales CALIDAD, PASIÓN E INNOVACIÓN.

30 AÑOS DE JUBILEO DEL "CROP-TO-SHOP": 1991-2021 CD: Este año 2021 se cumple el 30 aniversario de Davidoff en República Dominicana, ¿puede dar un breve resumen de estas tres décadas a nuestros lectores?

HE: Sí exactamente. El 2021 marca un año especial en la historia de Oettinger Davidoff y Tabadom. El 30 aniversario de la “Nueva Generación de Cigarros Davidoff ” hechos a mano en la República Dominicana, así como de nuestra filosofía “Cropto-Shop’. Fue en 1991 cuando Oettinger Davidoff trasladó la producción de sus cigarros Davidoff de Cuba a República Dominicana. La compañía se asoció con Henke Kelner de Tabadom y lanzó su primer Davidoff Cigars “hecho a mano en República Dominicana”. Este movimiento también fue el comienzo de la implementación de nuestra filosofía “Crop-to-Shop”: la integración vertical de toda la cadena de valor que nos permite dirigir cada uno de los más de 170 pasos de trabajo para la elaboración de un cigarro Davidoff hecho a mano, que van desde el desarrollo de las semillas hasta el envío a nuestra red minoristas a nivel global. Desde entonces, la compañía ha estado elaborando todos sus cigarros Davidoff, así como la mayoría de los cigarros de su propia marca (AVO, Cusano, Griffins, Private Stock y Zino Platinum Cigars) en la República Dominicana.

Una década más tarde, en 2001, Oettinger Davidoff compró Tabadom Holding a Henke Kelner. Y en 2008, la compañía abrió otro espacio de producción en Honduras, donde se elaboran sus cigarros Camacho y Zino. En la última década, Oettinger Davidoff ha introducido una serie de nuevas líneas de cigarros, incluidas Davidoff Nicaragua, Davidoff Escurio, Davidoff Yamasá y Davidoff Winston Churchill, así como la nueva línea Zino. Nuestro último desarrollo es la línea Davidoff Dominicana, lanzada a principios de este año.

Hasta hoy, todos los cigarros Davidoff se producen en Santiago de los Caballeros, República Dominicana. Somos expertos en el desarrollo de semillas patentadas y en el arte de hacer cigarros,

CD: ¿Cuál ha sido su mayor logro profesional durante su carrera en Tabadom?

HE: Humildemente puedo decir, que basado en los diferentes roles que he asumido a lo largo de mi carrera en Tabadom, he alcanzado varios logros. Para mí, el proyecto más relevante e importante fue la implementación del nuevo ‘Packaging Competence Center’ en nuestra fábrica de Villa González, introduciendo una metodología basada en un acercamiento aún más centralizado.

Otro logro importante fue el desarrollo de más terrenos de cultivo, tanto en República Dominicana como en Honduras.

CD: ¿Recuerda alguna anécdota que haya supuesto un reto en su trabajo?

HE: Hay muchas. Una muy particular fue definitivamente el manejo de la pandemia que nos tomó a todos por sorpresa. Recuerdo lo desafiante que fue para mí crear un escenario para nuestro valioso personal basado en la seguridad; mientras que al mismo tiempo necesitaba construir la confianza y, sobre todo, el optimismo. Me complace decir que

La tradición, la innovación, la pasión y la integridad son los valores que impulsan a los 3,100 empleados a cumplir la promesa prima de la compañía a sus clientes, es decir, deleitar y sorprender con productos emocionantes e innovadores para brindar experiencias de momentos llenos de felicidad, en línea con el lema de Davidoff. - “Tiempo maravillosamente lleno”. -”Time beautifully filled”-.

CD: Este exitoso crecimiento tiene detrás figuras claves que trabajaron para lograr lo que es Tabadom hoy, ¿puede mencionar algunas personas claves durante estos treinta años de Tabadom?

HE: Son muchas las personas que han contribuido al éxito de la empresa en todas estas décadas.

En mi opinión, solo juntos como un equipo fuerte hemos podido lograr el éxito a largo plazo. Son los esfuerzos conjuntos los que nos hacen fuertes. Una visión clara, así como un buen trabajo en equipo, respeto y apoyo mutuo, y sobre todo compromiso y pasión por nuestros cigarros premium hechos a mano han sido la clave. Con esto en mente, mi reconocimiento va a todas las personas que han contribuido al éxito de nuestra empresa.

CD: ¿Cómo es la relación corporativa entre Tabadom y Oettinger Davidoff?

HE: Tabadom es una filial de Oettinger Davidoff

desde 2001 y tenemos una línea muy directa con la sede en Suiza. Como Gerente General de Tabadom y Jefe de Producción Global de Oettinger Davidoff, soy responsable de encontrar y desarrollar sinergias entre los diferentes lugares de producción en todo el mundo, pero también de desarrollar nuevas ligas y experiencias de sabor para nuestros clientes. Esto va de la mano de una coordinación continua y muy minuciosa con los diferentes equipos ubicados en Suiza, en particular con el Jefe de Operaciones Globales y el Jefe de Innovación de Productos.

CD: Oettinger Davidoff tiene un ‘Master Blender Competence Center’, cuéntenos cómo funciona y su importancia para garantizar la calidad de los cigarros Davidoff.

HE: Sí, en 2018, Oettinger Davidoff estableció un ‘Master Blender Competence Center’, con el objetivo de impulsar la innovación en nuestras ligas, y así poder brindar nuevas experiencias de sabor a nuestros aficionados y al mismo tiempo asegurar la calidad y consistencia de nuestros cigarros premium hechos a mano a lo largo del tiempo, por lo cual, somos reconocidos mundialmente por nuestros aficionados.

Consiste en un grupo de colaboradores extraordinariamente capacitados, con una alta experiencia en tabaco y que representan funciones específicas dentro de nuestras diferentes divisiones, desde los espacios de producción en República Dominicana y Honduras, la sede en Basilea, Suiza, así como de un panel global de degustación. Este grupo, rigurosamente seleccionado, está involucrado en el desarrollo de nuevas ligas en todas las

marcas de Oettinger Davidoff y en ambos sitios de producción (RD y Honduras). El ‘Master Blender Competence Center’ está estrechamente vinculado a los departamentos de marketing y comercial de Oettinger Davidoff en Basilea, donde se establecen los informes y las iniciativas de nuevos cigarros y se comparten con nuestro equipo para las diferentes propuestas.

Este Competence Center nos brinda un enfoque holístico, no solo como empresa, sino también, y lo más importante, un enfoque orientado a las necesidades de nuestros clientes y los aficionados a los cigarros de todo el mundo. Por eso es tan importante para nosotros. Al mismo tiempo nos garantiza una futura generación de Masters Blenders y expertos en cigarros que serán capaces de impulsar la innovación y nuevas experiencias de sabor para satisfacer las necesidades y expectativas de nuestros clientes y, al mismo tiempo, asegurarse de que la calidad y consistencia de nuestros cigarros cumplan los más altos estándares. Y, por último, pero no menos importante, este apasionado equipo no dejará de ampliar continuamente sus horizontes y de crear nuevas experiencias de sabor para deleitar a los aficionados a los cigarros de todo el mundo.

Con estas valiosas explicaciones, concluimos nuestra conversación con Hamlet, quien nos ha brindado una avalancha de conocimientos, para que ahora podamos apreciar cómo funcionan hoy para el futuro. Actualmente, el equipo está trabajando en ligas de cigarros que la compañía lanzará en el año 2025 y que, desde ya, podemos imaginar lo exquisitos que serán.

hrough the smoking experience of CIGARRO DOMINICANO magazine team and in our conversations with cigars lovers, we have observed that regardless the years has gone, when a Davidoff fan smokes a cigar, their palate receives the same flavor that they expected to find in that cigar. This consistency in the manufacture of an artisanal product, with all that it entails to achieve it, combined with the highest quality, have been the key for success in these 30 years of the Davidoff cigars being manufactured in the Dominican Republic.

To learn more about this valuable thirty-year trajectory and the company philosophy, CIGARRO DOMINICANO magazine has exclusively interviewed Hamlet Espinal, General Manager of Tabadom Holding and Vice President Head of Global Production of Oettinger Davidoff AG, with whom we have talked about his professional career, but also the rigorous system the company has implemented to achieve quality and consistency in the manufacture of their famous handmade premium cigars and the alignment between the head office and the factory to bring their “Crop-toShop” philosophy to fruition, so that our readers,

internationally, know more about this iconic brand and enjoy, even more, their Davidoff cigars.

HAMLET ESPINAL PROFESSIONAL PROFILE CIGARRO DOMINICANO: How and when do you get to work at Tabadom?

HAMLET ESPINAL: I formally started working at Tabadom on May 13, 1998. At that time, I was looking for a company where I can develop myself both, personally and professionally. But above all,

I was looking for an environment where I could feel, live and share my passion for tobacco and in particular for handmade premium cigars. My father who was then managing a tobacco processing company introduced me to Henke Kelner and this is how the doors at Tabadom opened to me.

CD: Tell us about your professional growth in this international tobacco company.

HE: My first position within Tabadom was in the cigar banding area where all cigars are ringed. I had to exchange the cigars, which did not meet the quality criteria. Only six months afterwards, I got the opportunity to lead and develop the blending room and some years later, my area of responsibilities was widened and I got to manage the tobacco processing operations (related to our own crop) located in Jicomé, while continuing managing and leading the blending room. A year later, I was entrusted with the rest of the tobacco process operations, including also the wrapper and the binder.

In 2008, I was nominated Director of Operations at Tabadom, responsible for all of our cigar factories, and in 2015, I was appointed General Manager of Tabadom Holding. Eventually, four years ago, in June 2017, I was nominated Head of Global Production of Oettinger Davidoff, responsible for all production sites of the group in the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

CD: How the power of this famous cigar brand has influenced your career?

HE: In the most exciting and positive way. I had the incredible chance to grow within the company.

Thanks to this experience, I have been able to learn, experience, monitor as well as interpret all aspects related to a high-end and global premium brand, as Davidoff is. I am very passionate about my job and conscious of the great responsibility I have. In order to ensure that we always take the right steps and continue offering cigars which meet our aficionados’ expectations in regards to unique taste experiences, quality, as well as consistency, I have been continuously educating myself on a personal and professional level.

CD: What does the near future hold for Hamlet in Tabadom/Oettinger Davidoff?

HE: As the world of premium cigars grows, so does our commitment to create and develop new taste experiences to delight and surprise our aficionados around the globe. I am always looking at new ways on how to add value and how to excel ourselves in our day-to-day business. We have several projects that are based on our “Crop-to-Shop” philosophy and they are all anchored in the three main axes QUALITY, PASSION AND INNOVATION.

30 YEARS "CROP-TO-SHOP" JUBILEE: 1991 – 2021 CD: This 2021 year marks the 30th anniversary of Davidoff in the Dominican Republic, can you

give a brief of these three decades to our readers?

HE: Yes exactly. 2021 marks a special year in the history of Oettinger Davidoff and Tabadom. The 30th anniversary of the “new generation Davidoff Cigars” handmade in the Dominican Republic as well as of our “Crop-to-Shop” philosophy. It was back in 1991 when Oettinger Davidoff moved the production of its Davidoff cigars from Cuba to the Dominican Republic. The company partnered-up with Henke Kelner from Tabadom and launched its first Davidoff Cigars ‘hecho a mano en República Dominicana’. This move was also the start of the implementation of our “Crop-to-Shop” philosophy: The vertical integration of the entire value chain has allowed us to steer each of the over 170 working steps of a handmade Davidoff cigar ranging from the development of the seeds to the crafting of the cigar and the shipping to our global retail network. Since then, the company has been crafting all its Davidoff cigars as well as the majority of its own brand cigars (AVO, Cusano, Griffins, Private Stock and Zino Platinum Cigars) in the Dominican Republic.

A decade later, in 2001, Oettinger Davidoff purchased Tabadom Holding from Henke Kelner.

And in 2008, the company opened another production site in Honduras where its Camacho and Zino cigars are crafted. In the last decade, Oettinger Davidoff has introduced a number of new cigar lines, including the Davidoff Nicaragua, Davidoff Escurio, Davidoff Yamasá and Davidoff Winston Churchill as well as the new Zino line. Our latest development is the Davidoff Dominicana line, launched earlier this year Still today, all Davidoff cigars are produced in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic.

We are experts in developing proprietary seeds and in the art of cigar making, blending various tobaccos from all corners of the world to create unique taste experiences. Thanks to our “Cropto-Shop” philosophy, we can keep our promise to meet highest quality and maintain the consistency of all our cigars.

CD: What has been your greatest professional achievement during your career at Tabadom?

HE: I can humbly say that, based on the different positions I have assumed throughout my career, several achievements. For me, the most relevant and important project was the implementation of the new Packaging Competence Center here at our site in Villa González, introducing an even more focused approach and methodology. Another important achievement was the development of more farmlands in the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

CD: Do you remember any anecdote that has been a challenge in your work?

HE: There are many. One very particular was definitely the handling of the pandemic which took us all by complete surprise. I remember how challenging it was for me to create a scenario for our valued staff based on safety, while at the same time I needed to build on trust – and above all – on optimism. I am pleased to say that this worked out very well and, in Honduras, we were even cited as a role company for best practice in the protection of its employees.

CD: This successful growth has behind key figures who worked to achieve what Tabadom is today, can you mention some key people during these thirty years of Tabadom?

HE: There are many persons who have contributed to the success of the company in all these decades.

In my view, it is only together as a strong team that we can achieve long-term success. It is the joint efforts that make us strong. A clear vision as well as good teamwork, mutual respect and support as well as lots of commitment and passion for our handmade premium cigars are key. With this in mind, my appreciation goes to every single person who has contributed to the success of our company.

CD: How is the corporate relation between Tabadom and Oettinger Davidoff?

HE: Tabadom is an affiliate of Oettinger Davidoff since 2001 and we have a very direct line to the headquarters in Switzerland. As General Manager of Tabadom and Head of Global Production of Oettinger Davidoff, I’m responsible for finding and developing synergies between the different

production sites worldwide but also developing new blends and taste experiences for our customers. This goes hand in hand with a continuous and very thorough coordination with the different teams located in Switzerland, in particular with the Head of Global Operations and the Head of Product Innovation.

CD: Oettinger Davidoff has a Master Blender Competence Center, tell us how it works and its importance to guarantee Davidoff cigars quality.

HE: Yes, back in 2018, Oettinger Davidoff established a Master Blender Competence Center, with the aim to push forward innovation in our blends, deliver new taste experiences for our cigar aficionados while at the same time securing the quality and consistency of our handmade premium cigars in the long term for which we are globally recognized by aficionados.

It consists of a group of well-trained employees with a high expertise in tobacco, representing specific functions of different divisions, from the production sites in the Dominican Republic and Honduras as well as the headquarters in Basel, Switzerland, as well as of a global tasting panel.

This hand-selected group is involved in the development of new blend across all the brands of Oettinger Davidoff and across both production sites (DR and Honduras). The Master Blender

Competence Center is closely linked to Oettinger Davidoff ’s Marketing and Commercial departments in Basel, where the cigar briefs and initiatives are established and shared with our team for proposals.

The Master Bender Competence gives us a holistic approach not only as a company, but also and most importantly, an approach geared towards the needs of our customers and the cigar aficionados around the globe. This is why the competence center is so important for us. It guarantees us a future generation of master blenders and cigar experts who are capable of driving innovation and new taste experiences to meet the needs and expectations of our customers while at the same time making sure that the quality and consistency of our cigars meet the known and highest standards. And, last but not least, the passionate team will not cease to continuously widen their horizons and create new taste experiences in order to delight cigar aficionados around the globe.

With these valuable explanations, we conclude our conversation with Hamlet, who has given us a flood of knowledge, so now we can appreciate how they work today for the future. Currently, the team is working on the cigar blends that the company will launch in 2025 and that we can imagine already how exquisite they will be.

Para presentar formalmente la edición limitada del nuevo cigarro Fernando León Legacy Lancero, La Aurora realizó un acto de lanzamiento en sus instalaciones de la zona franca de Tamboril, en Santiago República Dominicana, durante el cual, su hijo Guillermo León Herbert, con unas emotivas palabras, habló de la historia detrás de este cigarro, dedicado a la productiva vida tabaquera de su padre, Don Fernando León Asensio.

la integridad. Él valoraba la disciplina, la calidad y el tiempo; coincidencialmente estos elementos encajan perfectamente con la elaboración de un buen cigarro; del que también fue un gran conocedor.

Recuerdo una mañana que estamos recibiendo tabaco en el almacén de compras; mientras Papá hacía la inspección, tomando manillas y oliendo sus hojas, se detuvo en una en particular y le preguntó al cosechero si tenía una planta de naranjas sembrada donde cosecho su tabaco. Sorprendido, el cosechero le responde que sí, cuestionando: “Sí Don Fernando, pero, ¿cómo usted sabe eso?”

Papá le respondió: mostrándole la hoja, “lo puedo percibir en su aroma”.

Les cuento que su cigarro original era un tamaño corona envuelto en capa Camerún, destacado por su textura y color.

El cigarro Don Fernando original fue deseado por conocedores y existen muchas anécdotas detrás de él, a pesar de que papá nunca quiso comercializarlo, pero sí le encantaba compartirlo. Normalmente se podía reconocer un Don Fernando porque era el único que llevaba el anillo León Jimenes con capa Camerún… hasta que comenzamos a sembrar capa Corojo en Sabana del Puerto.

para la época; descontinuando la siembra por las inclemencias del tiempo, y no fue hasta finales de los 90’s que retomamos nuevamente la siembra para capa, pero esta vez la variedad escogida fue Corojo. Este desarrollo de producción de capa local duró hasta el 2008; donde esta última cosecha fue muy especial para nosotros, era visitada por papá hasta 3 veces por semana y cada vez que regresaba de la finca, me decía…. “Mi hijo, esto es lo que podemos llamar una cosecha extraordinaria y quisiera que cuando este tabaco esté listo para usar, mi cigarro lleve esta capa”.

Desde entonces, su cigarro llevó esa capa hasta su fallecimiento; a partir de cuando nosotros decidimos comercializar la marca; y para lograr consistencia a través del tiempo, en 2010 iniciamos con el uso de Corojo Ecuador hasta el día de hoy.

Como muchos de ustedes ya saben, la capa de este cigarro que hoy disfrutamos, vino de esa cosecha extraordinaria y manteniendo su mezcla original de siempre; y el formato del cigarro, es una edición especial en su línea, un Lancero exclusivo para el mercado dominicano, el cual representa el largo legado de un gran conocedor de tabaco, con grandes aportes a la industria y nuestra nación.”

a Aurora has created an exclusive lancero cigar in honor of Fernando León Asensio, who dedicated his life to the Dominican tobacco trade since 1937.

The ‘La Aurora Family Reserve Fernando León Legacy Lancero’ is composed with an extra matured Corojo wrapper from the Cosecha 2008, the last special project developed by Don Fernando in the experimental plantation of Sabana del Puerto in Bonao, before his departure.

The format and its wrapper reflect Don Fernando’s long legacy as well as his virtues, which have made valuable contributions to the cigar culture of the Dominican Republic. The ‘Fernando León Legacy Lancero’ is a limited-edition cigar that is available on the Dominican market in boxes of ten units.

The lancero format is admired and respected by cigar lovers around the world for its length and finesse, a token of expertise and skill in a cigar maker. Created with a blend of Dominican and Brazilian tobaccos, it offers notes of wood, cinnamon, and walnut with a citrus essence and even a pinch of pepper to reflect the character of Fernando León.

This limited edition is a gesture of honor in remembrance of Don Fernando, who in 2022 would have accomplished one hundred years devoted to the Dominican Republic, its people and its legendary tobacco tradition that is honored from generation to generation.

To formally present the limited edition of the new Fernando León Legacy Lancero cigar, La Aurora held a launch event at its facilities in the Tamboril free zone, in Santiago, Dominican Republic, during which, his son, Guillermo León Herbert, with some emotional words, spoke of the story behind this cigar, dedicated to the productive tobacco life of his father, Don Fernando León Asensio.

Fernando León Asensio and Guillermo León Herbert I remember one morning that we were receiving tobacco at the storage unit; while Dad was inspecting, taking bundles and smelling leaves, he stopped at one in particular and asked the harvester if he had an orange tree planted where he harvested his tobacco. Surprised, the harvester answers yes, questioning: “Yes, Don Fernando, but how do you know that?”

Dad replied: showing him the leaf, “I can tell by the scent.”

His original cigar was a Corona wrapped in a Cameroon leaf, known for its texture and color.

The original Don Fernando cigar was sought after by connoisseurs and there are many anecdotes about it, and though Papá never wanted to market it, he did love to share it. Normally, you would re-

cognize a Don Fernando because it was the only cigar with the León Jimenes ring and Cameroon wrapper ... until we began to plant Corojo wrappers in Sabana del Puerto.

Papá began to plant Olor tobacco, specifically for wrappers, in the Sabana del Puerto farm in the 1960’s, something innovative and challenging for the time. The project was discontinued for a time due to inclement weather, and it was not until the late 1990’s that we resumed planting for wrapper leaves, but this time the chosen variety was Corojo. This local wrapper production development lasted until 2008; with a very special final harvest.

Papá visited the farm up to 3 times a week and every time he returned, he would tell me…. “Son, this is what we can call an extraordinary harvest.

I hope to eventually see my cigar wrapped with this Corojo.”

Since then, his cigar carried that wrapper until his death. When we chose to bring his brand to market; in an effort to provide consistency over time, we started using Corojo from Ecuador from 2010 to present in his cigar.

As many of you already know, the wrapper of this cigar that we enjoy today came from that extraordinary harvest, all while keeping Papá’s original blend; and the format of the cigar, is a special edition for his line, an exclusive Lancero for the Dominican market, which represents the long legacy of a great tobacco connoisseur, and his historic contributions to the industry and our nation”.

DR: Ha sido todo un desafío, nadie estaba preparado para un confinamiento y mucho menos para las demoras en los transportes marítimos y aéreos, sin contar la inflación en los costos de los materiales, por lo que hemos tenido que recurrir a nuevas técnicas, a innovar e identificar estrategias para minimizar el impacto en nuestros clientes, sin afectar la calidad y la garantía que nos caracteriza.

CD: Tras dos años en la gerencia de maquinarias, sabemos que ha adquirido una valiosa experiencia en el sector tabacalero. ¿Cómo ha visto la evolución de la industria en ese período?

DR: He vivenciado el crecimiento exponencial de la industria, la aceptación y su capacidad de captar nuevos fumadores; podría decir que este es uno de los mejores momentos, donde la industria se ha podido posicionar de manera sorprendente.

n visita a la empresa IEM Corporation, el equipo de la revista internacional CIGARRO DOMINICANO, compartió con la licenciada Damaris Rosado, la Psicóloga de las Máquinas, quien maneja la división de maquinarias de la reconocida corporación proveedora de máquinas y servicios para la industria del tabaco, ubicada en Tamboril, Santiago, República Dominicana. DR: Les ofrecemos orientación y le acompañamos en el proceso de crecimiento, brindándoles calidad, confianza y garantía al menor costo, a los fines de impulsar su desarrollo.

CD: Ante el actual incremento de la demanda de cigarros, ¿qué soluciones tiene IEM que contribuyan al aumento de la producción de sus clientes?

DR: Proporcionar recursos integrales y efectivos para aumentar la competitividad de nuestros clientes, satisfacer sus necesidades y optimizar sus recursos a través de nuestras habilidades, innovación y experiencia en el sector, con el objetivo de mantener su rentabilidad.

CD: Además de la venta de equipos, ¿qué acompañamiento ofrece IEM al cliente tras la adquisición de las máquinas?

DR: Aun no, entiendo que, por la preparación previa (duré un año rotando por los diferentes puestos de IEM, recibiendo los entrenamientos correspondientes tanto a nivel local como internacional), el manejo y la seguridad al presentar una propuesta, mi disposición y siempre estar abierta a nuevos conocimientos y a escuchar, me ha permitido hacerle frente y sobre todo el reconocer que de quien menos lo esperas, puedes aprender.

CD: Antes de finalizar esta interesante entrevista, con la “psicóloga de las máquinas” nos gustaría conocer su recomendación profesional, para el éxito de los nuevos fabricantes de cigarros.

DR: Lo primero es, no volverse un asalariado emocional, es decir, no entrar únicamente por dinero, siempre es bueno buscar una actividad que realmente te llene, te apasione. De esta forma, ganar dinero deja de ser tu único objetivo y te puedes centrar en otras cosas importantes como la posibilidad de innovar dentro de tu sector o de llevar tu producto o servicio a otro nivel.

Solo tú sabes el verdadero esfuerzo y dedicación que hay detrás de cada uno de los productos que elaboras, así que ponle valor, mantenlo y defiéndelo.

Emprender no es nada sencillo, te vas a encontrar muchos obstáculos por el camino, que harán que en algunos momentos te falten las fuerzas y te desanimes, la grandeza está en mantener la persistencia.

he CIGARRO DOMINICANO magazine team shared with Miss Damaris Rosado, the Machine Psychologist, who manages the machinery division of the renowned IEM Corporation when we visited this competitive company that provides machines and services for the tobacco industry, located in Tamboril, Santiago, Dominican Republic. In this exclusive interview, we spoke with Damaris about the important solutions that the company offers to large, medium and small tobacco factories, which can make their processes more efficient, both for the manufacture of Premium cigars, as well as mechanized cigars, when acquiring new, used equipment, as well as when requiring the machinery installation or repair.

CIGARRO DOMINICANO: As manager of the machinery division at IEM Corporation, what equipment does the company offer for the cigar factories?

DAMARIS ROSADO: We offer all supplies such as (cortadores, boncheras, chavetas…), spare parts and machines (MID, MEJ, ARENCO, SWWV, C160, S100, Variomat-S, HSO, TOM, Thresher (S6, S8, S10), BD300, Tipping machine (TP100, TP160), KDS..), OVERHAULING of machines and equip-

CD: Many people can be prejudiced when seeing a young person and with an unconventional professional career for the industry, Damaris has a degree in Industrial Psychology, graduated from the Technological University of Santiago (UTESA), managing the machinery division of IEM Corporation. Have you ever found this situation? How have you dealt with it?

DR: Not yet, I understand that, due to the previous training (I spent a year experiencing the different functions and departments of IEM, receiving the corresponding training both locally and internationally), the handling and the security when presenting a proposal, my commitment and always being open to new knowledge and listening, has allowed me to face it and above all to recognize that from whom you least expect it, you can learn.

CD: Before ending this interesting interview, with the “machine psychologist” we would like to know her professional recommendation for the new cigar manufacturers success.

DR: The first thing is, do not become an emotional employee, that is, don’t look only for money, it is always good to look for an activity that really fulfills you, makes you passionate. In this way, making money is no longer your only goal and you can focus on other important things such as the possibility of innovating within your sector or taking your product or service to another level. Only you know the true effort and dedication behind each of the products you make, so put value on it, maintain it and defend it. Business venture is not easy at all, you will find many obstacles along the way, which will make you lack your strength at times and become discouraged, the greatness is in maintaining persistence.

Eugenio Alliata Bronner celebró el vigésimo quinto aniversario de su marca de cigarros Cezar Bronner, y para conmemorar esta fecha tan especial, ha lanzado una nueva línea, CEZAR BRONNER 25 ANIVERSARIO.

A

lliata Bronner, arquitecto italiano, nacido en Roma, expresó sobre esta nueva línea, “En el año 1996, entraba en una fábrica pequeña, en Tamboril, Santiago, hecha de blocks, plywood y techo de zinc, tenía un sueño, realizar una marca de cigarros dominicanos, para llevarla a Europa. Me recibe un joven, con un cigarro en la boca, me aprieta la mano, y desde ese momento ha nacido una amistad fraternal, una relación entre hermanos.

Ese joven es Jochy Blanco, presidente de Tabacalera Palma, la que era la pequeña fábrica de block, plywood y zinc, hoy una de las fábricas de cigarros más grandes y reconocidas de República Dominicana. Jochy contribuyó mucho para realizar este sueño. Así empezó Cezar Bronner, con un cigarro pequeño, el cual estoy pensando relanzar y se llamará ‘El Primero’.

Para celebrar los 25 años de la marca Cezar Bronner, yo he creado un Toro con un moño en la cabeza, hecho con una liga de tabacos añejados hasta por 5 años. Para esta nueva línea se usó la capa Corojo de la finca de Jochy y tripa de tabacos bien guardados que cumplen con estrictos estándares de calidad y fermentados especialmente para hacer este cigarro 25 Aniversario. Durante nuestra conversación con Eugenio, disfrutando este exquisito cigarro 25 Aniversario, en el nuevo cigar lounge Ritual, que dirige su hijo Manuel Alliata, nos revela su compromiso con la calidad a través de todos estos años, lo que le ha llevado a que hoy en día su marca de cigarros esté muy bien posicionada en el mercado, especialmente el europeo y considera un gran logro haber llegado a estos 25 años lanzando un cigarro complejo y balanceado, un cigarro de colección, del cual se han hecho solo 10,000 unidades y que ya está disponible en el mercado, especialmente en Ritual Cigar Lounge, un lugar que Eugenio define “como estar en el salón de nuestra casa”, ubicado en Galería Comerciales de Puntacana Village, el cual abre todos los días, desde la 11 de la mañana, ofreciendo a sus clientes una fina selección de grandes marcas de cigarros y una amplia selección de licores, destilados y cócteles propios del bar. Eugenio Alliata Bronner celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of his Cezar Bronner cigar brand, and to commemorate this special date, he has launched a new line, CEZAR BRONNER 25 ANNIVERSARY.

lliata Bronner, Italian architect, born in Rome, said about this new line, “In 1996, I entered a small factory, in Tamboril, Santiago, made of blocks, plywood and a zinc roof. I had a dream, to make a brand of Dominican cigars, to take it to Europe. A young man greets me with a cigar in his mouth, he squeezes my hand, and from that moment on a brotherly friendship has been born, a relationship between brothers. That young man is Jochy Blanco, president of Tabacalera Palma, which was the small block, plywood and zinc factory, today one of the largest and most recognized cigar factories in the Dominican Republic. Jochy contributed a lot to make this dream come true. This is how Cezar Bronner began, with a small cigar, which I am thinking of relaunching and will be called ‘El Primero’.

To celebrate 25 years of the Cezar Bronner brand, I have created a Toro with a bow on the head, made with a blend of tobaccos aged for up to 5 years. For this new line, the Corojo wrapper from Jochy’s field and wellkept tobacco filler that meet strict quality standards and fermented especially were used to make this 25th Anniversary cigar. This is a cigar with plenty of flavors, full body, it has many interesting changes during the smoke and leaves an excellent taste on the palate. The cigar has woody notes, of nutmeg and in the last third it becomes stronger, and it becomes a cigar for expert palates looking for more flavors of leather and nuts”.

n septiembre del año 2021 las familias Comprés y De la Cruz, dejaban inaugurado el nuevo edificio que acoge la Tabacalera LyV, una fábrica de cigarros premium que nació el 29 junio del 2004 y que hoy tiene veintiséis tabaqueros trabajando bajo la dirección de Leandro Comprés y de Víctor de la Cruz, cuyas iniciales dan nombre a la tabacalera, ubicada en el corazón de Tamboril, en Santiago, República Dominicana.

Esta nueva edificación, nace de la gran expansión que experimenta la fábrica, fruto de la creciente demanda de cigarros que se genera en los

meses de confinamiento por la pandemia del Covid -19. Por supuesto, este crecimiento del último año y medio no surge al azar, sino que es el fruto de dieciséis años de arduo trabajo, desde que la fábrica nació en un antiguo almacén que perteneció a don Gregorio Comprés, padre de Leandro, quien también fue tabaquero.

LyV fue concebida como una fábrica para elaborar líneas privadas, y en la actualidad se manufacturan las reconocidas marcas internacionales 708, de Chicago; Panacea, de Pensilvania; Francisco de Miranda, de Argentina; Rockefeller, de Estados Unidos, entre otras; así como marcas locales en

desarrollo como son, Hoja del Sol, Expreso Café, Capa Oscura, Blas Jiménez… Con el pasar de los años, algunos factores han hecho que LyV tenga marcas propias. TROVADOR fue la primera en surgir, cuyo nombre lo inspiró Noe Abreu, compadre de Víctor, quien compartía con él su afición a la guitarra y le llamaba ‘Trovador’; en el 2008, al ver que muchas personas iban a la fábrica a comprar mazos de cigarros, él les recomendó ponerles ese nombre. Luego llegó ‘VERONA DEL SUR’, una marca que era de unos clientes de Florida, que la tenían en desuso y se la traspasaron a LyV. El último cigarro en sumarse al portafolio propio fue el

Leandro, quien es abogado de profesión, nos responde: “me gusta el contacto con los artesanos y realmente disfruto la fiesta de fin de año. Sabemos que los trabajadores producen mucho estrés, pero como fuimos tabaqueros, como ellos, podemos empatizar. Muchas mañanas comparto con ellos el café, otros días una comida, ellos me hacen un cigarro especial y eso crea un vínculo particular, sintiéndose un ambiente laboral satisfactorio. De esta relación y de conocer las necesidades de los tabaqueros, surgió la labor social y filantrópica que hacemos en la fábrica, la cual no nos gusta promocionar; pero le coVíctor de la Cruz mento que todos los años construimos una vivienda para un trabajador que la necesite y que tenga un terreno donde construirla. Víctor y Leandro son la segunda generación de tabaqueros en sus respectivas familias, el padre de uno, trabajaba en la siembra de tabaco y el padre del otro, como tabaquero; y piensan que ya por su edad hay que trabajar para el legado, como sus padres se lo dejaron. Ambos tienen por costumbre ver hacia el futuro y planificarse muy bien, por lo que ya están previendo el relevo generacional en la fábrica, entrenándolos, y creen que dentro de cinco años ya ésta tercera generación estará capacitada para tomar las riendas del día a día de la fábrica. Parte de esta nueva generación es Víctor Hardy, hijo de Víctor; Leandro Manuel, de dieciocho años, hijo de Leandro y Yuli, su sobrina.

Estas dos familias han aportado muchos tabaqueros a Tamboril. Por parte de Víctor, que son 13 hermanos, todos son tabaqueros y por parte de Leandro, que son 7 hermanos, seis de ellos han incursionado en esta industria. Leandro nos comenta, “para mi el cigarro es mi vida, es prácticamente todo. Yo vengo de ahí, me criaron con eso, me educaron con eso, me pagaron los estudios con eso”.

Víctor nos dice que siente mucho agradecimiento por la experiencia que tomó y vivió en Tabadom, especialmente en los últimos 10 años que trabajó allá como auditor de calidad nacional e internacional y viajando para hacer exhibiciones y participando en charlas. Nos cuenta que cuando el boom del tabaco, a finales de los años 90’s, se daba la misma situación que ahora, la escasez de mano de obra, por lo que él abrió una escuelita en su casa de 5:30 a 7:30 de la tarde, enseñando a muchachos que vivían cerca, que él veía que podían tener condiciones y luego les daba trabajo. En seis meses preparó alrededor de 70 jóvenes en su propia casa. “Mi gran satisfacción, es que donde quiera que me encuentro con ellos soy su tutor y me respetan. Muchos de ellos salieron muy bien preparados y han progresado”.

Se siente muy satisfecho de que, en Tamboril, una comunidad de 105 mil habitantes, no haya desempleo. Cree que la gente joven del pueblo es muy trabajadora y que el que no trabaja es porque no quiere. “Por experiencia en la fábrica, la juventud es trabajadora, los tabaqueros son los obreros de más progreso en sus áreas, porque es un trabajo muy bien pagado, porque un tabaquero es un artista, un artesano”.

El lema de LyV es “Fumar es como Enamorarse”, por lo que tanto Víctor de la Cruz como Leandro Comprés nos invitan a enamorarnos de la vida, del trabajo, de la familia, del cigarro Premium.

n September 2021, the Comprés and De la Cruz families opened the new building that houses the LyV tobacco industry, a premium cigar factory that was born on June 29, 2004 and today has twenty-six cigar makers working under Leandro Comprés and by Víctor de la Cruz direction, whose initials give name to the tobacco company, located in the heart of Tamboril, at Santiago province, in the Dominican Republic.

This new building is born from the big expansion that the factory is experiencing, as a result of the cigar growing demand that was generated in

the confinement months due to the Covid -19 pandemic. Of course, this growth of the last year and a half does not arise by chance, but is the result of sixteen years of hard work, since the factory was born in an old warehouse that belonged to Don Gregorio Comprés, Leandro’s father, who was also a tobacco maker.

LyV was conceived as a factory to develop private lines, and today renowned international brands are manufactured there, like 708, from Chicago; Panacea, from Pennsylvania; Francisco de Miranda, from Argentina; Rockefeller, from the United States, among others; as well as local brands such

as, Hoja del Sol, Expreso Café, Capa Oscura, Blas Jiménez… Over the years, some factors have led LyV to have its own brands. TROVADOR was the first to arise, whose name was inspired by Noe Abreu, a Víctor’s friend, who shared his love for the guitar with him and called him ‘Troubadour’; in 2008, seeing that many people went to the factory to buy cigar packs, he recommended that they give them that name. Then came ‘VERONA DEL SUR’, a brand that belonged to a LyV’s customers in Florida, who was fell into disuse and they transferred it to LyV. Víctor and Leandro are the second generation of tobacco growers in their respective families, the father of one, worked in the tobacco growing and the other’s father, as a tobacco maker; and now they think that because of their age they have to work for the legacy, as their parents left it to them. Both have the good habit of looking to the future and planning themself very well, so they are already foreseeing the generational change in the factory, training them, and they believe that within five years this third generation will already be able to take charge of the factory day-to-day activities. Part of this new generation is Víctor Hardy, Víctor’s son; Leandro Manuel, eighteen years-old, son of Leandro, and Yuli, his niece.

These two families have contributed with many cigar makers to Tamboril.

On the De La Cruz’s family, who are 13 brothers, all works at the tobacco industry, as cigar makers and on Leandro’s family, who are 7 brothers, six of them have ventured into this industry. Leandro tells us, “For me the cigar is my life, it is practically everything. I come from there, they raised me with that, they educated me with that, they paid for my studies with that”.

Víctor tells us that he is very grateful for the experience he lived in Tabadom, especially in the last 10 years that he worked there, as a national and international quality auditor, traveling to do exhibitions and participating in talks. He tells us that when the tobacco boom, at the end of the 90’s, the same situation prevailed as now, the shortage of labor, so he opened a little school in his house, from 5:30 to 7:30 in the afternoon, teaching boys who lived nearby, that he saw that they could have skills, and then he gave them work. In six months, he trained around 70 young people in his own home. “My great satisfaction is that wherever I meet them I’m their tutor and they respect me. Many of them came out very well prepared and have progressed”. He feels very satisfied that, in Tamboril, a community of 105,000 inhabitants, there is no unemployment. Víctor believes that the young people of the town are very hard-working and that whoever does not work is because he doesn’t want to. “From experience in the factory, the youth are workers, the cigar makers are the most advanced workers in their areas, because it is a very well-paid job, since a cigar maker is an artist, a craftsman”.

l año 2021 fue de gran crecimiento para EL Artista Cigars. El incremento provino de dos fuentes: la colocación de nuevas tiendas en los Estados Unidos y en el extranjero; así como el desarrollo de nuevas líneas de productos que ofrecen aún más opciones para los consumidores de cigarros Premium. Este año, El Artista Cigars logró extensiones de dos líneas para dos marcas populares: The Slugger de Big Papi y Buffalo TEN. The Slugger by Big Papi, una colaboración del futuro miembro del salón de la fama David Ortiz, introdujo un nuevo tamaño para la popular serie de cigarros David Ortiz. “La marca de David sigue creciendo, afirma Radhamés Rodríguez, presidente de El Artista Cigars, y desde el lanzamiento de The Slugger hace dos años hemos recibido solicitudes para sacar un nuevo tamaño para complementar el Gordo XL existente”.

El nuevo tamaño de 50 X 5 Robusto presenta la misma mezcla distintiva de The Slugger con una capa de San Andrés maduro de color marrón oscuro punteada, un sabroso capote Negrito dominicano y tripa de República Dominicana, Nicaragua y EE. UU. El Slugger incluye varios tabacos ligeros para una fumada notablemente más fuerte que la línea Original Big Papi. 021 was a big growth year for EL Artista Cigars. Growth came from two sources: new store placements in the United States and abroad, as well as growth within its own branded product lines offering even more choice for cigar consumers. This year, El Artista Cigars announced two-line extensions for two popular brands: The Slugger by Big Papi and Buffalo TEN. The Slugger by Big Papi, a collaboration between future hall-offamer David Ortiz, a new size was introduced for the popular David Ortiz Cigar Series. “David’s brand continues to grow,” states Radhamés ‘Ram’ Rodríguez, President of El Artista Cigars, “and since The Slugger’s launch two years ago we have had requests to bring out a new size to complement the existing Gordo XL”.

The new 50 X 5” Robusto size features same distinctive The Slugger blend with a stippled deep brown San Andrés maduro wrapper, flavorful Dominican Negrito binder, and fillers from Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and US. The Slugger includes several ligero tobaccos for a noticeably stronger smoke than the Original Big Papi line. Fans of the original Big Papi blend will recognize the handsome red and white Big Papi band on The Slugger, which is adorned with a contrasting navyblue foot ribbon. Twenty cigars come in a beautiful glossy blue and white box.

Developed by El Artista Cigars in conjunction with Ortiz, the size is a response to Big Papi fans’ and retailer requests, “We have hosted many dozens of events with Big Papi since 2018 and gathered a lot of feedback from fans and retailers about The Slugger”, says Kevin Newman Director of Sales & Marketing for El Artista Cigars, “There were many requests over the last 24 months for a Robusto, and this year we’re happy to offer it to the public”.

Buffalo TEN Connecticut features a smooth and sweet Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper from El Artista’s own farms and a rich Cameroon binder. The filler blend is sourced from Nicaragua, and the company’s own farms in the Dominican Republic.

This great cigar is available in one size, a soft box pressed 6X50 Toro, and El Artista offers it in two retail packages, as an attractive 5-Pack in a wooden retail shelf display that holds five 5-packs or as a singlestick. “Over the last two years Retailers have embraced Buffalo TEN in terms of packaging options and a great price point; consumers the world over have told us to keep making more and we feel the Connecticut continues the theme of quality and value both consumers and the brick & mortar retailer have come to know and love”, states Ram. Buffalo TEN Connecticut first went on sale in Norway distributed by Nordic Cigars at the beginning of June and was shipping to retailers in United Estates in August.
