INTRODUCTION

Welcome to My First Learn-to-Read Sight Words Workbook!

This book was created to help young readers, ages 4 to 7, build confidence, fluency, and excitement as they learn to read and write 102 essential sight words. This workbook combines research-based literacy practices with engaging, ocean-themed adventures that keep children eager to learn. Each page encourages hands-on learning through tracing, writing, coloring, and playful activities. Each exercise strengthens children’s letter recognition, fine motor skills, and early reading comprehension, while the ocean-themed characters guide them through each level, fostering curiosity and imagination.

Whether you’re teaching in a classroom, homeschooling, or supporting your child at home, this book invites you to celebrate progress along the way. Cheer for small victories, encourage daily practice, and watch as your child transforms from a beginning reader to a confident word explorer!

What Are Sight Words?

Sight words are foundational to reading success because they appear frequently in books and everyday text. When children can recognize these words instantly, they read more smoothly and confidently. My First Learn-to-Read Sight Words Workbook provides the repetition and practice needed for mastery in a way that feels fun, not forced.

The sight words in this workbook are divided into four levels that gradually progress from basic word recognition to independent writing. Each level introduces a new group of sight words, carefully chosen for developmental appropriateness and reading frequency.

Level One (26 words): a, and, as, be, can, did, for, go, has, his, I, is, it, like, look, me, my, of, or, see, she, the, to, we, well, you

Level Two (25 words): am, an, are, at, big, by, do, get, good, had, have, he, her, in, no, not, said, so, they, this, up, was, will, with, yes

Level Three (25 words): all, also, but, came, find, from, give, here, how, into, little, make, must, now, on, out, play, put, ran, say, that, two, went, were, who

Level Four (26 words): after, again, any, away, come, down, eat, friend, funny, help, jump, new, please, pretty, ride, saw, some, soon, take, there, too, under, want, what, where, your

How to Use This Book

On every individual sight-word practice page, children will color, trace, and write the word. They will then complete a brief activity at their current level. Levels One, Two, and Three focus on identifying and reading words, while Level Four encourages children to use words in complete sentences.

After completing a sight-word level, use the engaging activity pages, including word searches and coloring pages (beginning on page 119), to review what they have learned. These pages make practice feel playful while providing valuable repetition.

End each learning session by reviewing the words before moving forward. When the child completes the book, present the Certificate of Completion (on page 142) to honor their hard work and progress. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of this learning experience:

• Encourage your child to say each word aloud as they work— reading aloud reinforces memory and pronunciation.

• Track your child’s progress on the Sight Word Progress Charts at the start of each section by having them color each word as they master it to show them how far they’ve come.

• Aim for 10 to 15 minutes of practice a day. Consistency is more important than speed.

• Alternate between using this workbook and encouraging off-thepage activities to teach reading and writing.

• Celebrate every success, big or small, and revisit challenging words regularly.
