PowHER J.A.M. Renew Now Event Recap
You never know what impact you will have until you actually do something. The iWIN Global PowHer J.A.M. Renew Now Event provides that point. The event was First Class from the start. From the Incredible VIP Meet and Greet the Speakers event on Friday night to the Powerful Saturday event with six phenomenal speakers, this event did not disappoint. The Clarity Coach host La Donya Yvette and her staff of Gladiators made sure that the most impactful experience was had by all. There were so many nuggets, take-aways, and life-changing moments that are too numerous to count. The impact on the attendees was only matched by the class and elegance of the entire event. With a variety of speakers from different backgrounds and different perspectives, the event had something for everyone. From being able to Level Up to tackling the thoughts that keep you on the hamster wheel of weight loss, the J.A.M. Renew Now event fired on all cylinders. The attendees were treated to thought-provoking poetry, amazing music, line dancing, and more. There was so much unity and oneness that people did not want to leave, and that was just Friday VIP night! 4

The Essence of Leadership: Self-Awareness By: Kevin Wayne Johnson Leadership is not convenient. However, the urgent push to create new leaders begins with an awareness of self. My Journey towards Leadership I have been actively working and earning a decent salary since age fourteen. Over a span of forty-three years, I have cleaned the outdoor pool at a mid-sized hotel, served meals as a waiter at fast food and upscale restaurants, validated payroll, processed business and personal checks as a proof operator at major financial institutions, collected delinquent state taxes from businesses as a taxpayer service representative for the Commonwealth of Virginia. I also sold insurance policies and pieces of artwork, checked in travelers as a front desk clerk at Holiday Inn, worked in retail as a sales clerk at Macy’s, served in ministry as a deacon, prayer leader, adjunct professor, associate pastor and senior pastor, worked as a manager and director of information technology strategic sourcing at a two Fortune 1000 companies in New York City, and protected the citizens of the United States of America through my service as a front-line, mid-level and senior-level leader with several federal government agencies. My longevity in the workplace, in many different industries and diverse locations, has shaped my views and ideas about leadership – good and bad. I value the mentoring and guidance that I received from good leaders. There were many of them. Conversely, I abhor all interactions from the bad leaders. There were many of them as well. I do not remember too much that was said by the bad leaders, but I succinctly remember how they made me feel – even to this day. 10
Through these varied occupations, and employers, that span four decades, in addition to a few short periods of unemployment, I have learned many life-changing lessons based upon my experience, observations, frustrations, joys, collaboration with colleagues, relationships with peers and bosses, and responses to market fluctuations that influenced my job decisions. One of the most valuable lessons that I recall is my in-depth study, reading, observation and research on the subject of leadership. Specifically - servant leadership. his is a topic first introduced in 1970 by Robert K. Greenleaf. This retired AT&T executive coined the term servant leadership to describe the type of leadership that was missing from organizations. His book The Power of Servant Leadership (1998) offers his own insights on the inter-related subjects of serving and leading, wholeness and spirit as a collection of eight essays that were published from 1977 – 1987. Over the years, I am fascinated at the volumes of reading material available on this topic, yet surprised at the lacking evidence that these principles and strategies have been put to use. For example, I recently read an article in the Harvard Business Review that captures the essence of my experiences in diverse workplaces for over four decades. 11

Four Things To Remember When Beginning Your Voice-Over Career With time comes change! As the pandemic continues to spread, it has left many pondering the next moves in this game called LIFE! If there is ever a time to gift yourself it is now. Using your voice is yet another way to add value to your portfolio, but also to your bank account. Your voice is a GOD-given gift that should be shared. It can be difficult to start, well, anything really, but especially a new career in which you are investing your time, energy, and money. A career in voice-over requires faith, determination, and a host of other qualities and factors (including a supportive community and teachers/mentors who will guide you along the way). As fear and doubt are very natural by-products of starting anything new, keeping a balanced and positive mindset is necessary. Here are four helpful reminders for anyone taking the leap into voice-over: 1. Everyone will have an opinion. I love to research. I can spend all day immersing myself in any new subject of interest: watching countless YouTube videos; reading articles, reviews, archived blogs, or even actual, tangible, books. If I am interested in something, I try to learn as much about it as I can from the people who already know it. As far as voice-over is concerned, it’s great (and even necessary) to learn from the pros! And yet, it is important to remember that anything anyone says about any subject is usually just their opinion. More often than not, it is their subjective take based on personal experience. So if that is the case, when it comes to getting advice from VO professionals, be open but mindful. If their advice is constructive, helpful, and actionable, then great. But if their advice seems to be coming at you with bitterness, negativity, and purposeful discouragement, then maybe it would be helpful to reconsider your source. Overall, it is best to take what you need and leave what you don’t. 12
2. Everyone will have a pathway: yours will be yours. Find your path. When navigating any new territory, we typically try and follow in the footsteps of those who have already ventured in that direction. And yet, this can only ever take us so far. Chances are, your trajectory towards a successful voiceover career will be unique to you. There’s no way to predict the how’s and who’s and what’s and where’s that you’ll encounter along the way. And would you even want to predict it all? Wouldn’t it be super boring to know beforehand exactly how everything was going to line up? Most likely, the biggest concern in starting your voice-over career is whether or not it’s going to line up at all; whether you’re making the right decision and moving in the right direction. Now, there’s no easy, one-size-fits-all answer on that one. You’re the only person who can determine what is the “right” thing for you. It’s hard to trust you’ll get to where you want to go. It’s hard to trust that you’ll find the success you hope to find. BUT if you really feel excited about voice acting, wouldn’t you regret NOT trying at all more than trying and learning/gaining/expanding beyond what you could do before? When it comes to finding your unique career pathway, follow those little “breadcrumbs” of opportunity you discover along the way. Say yes to what piques your interest. You never know what talents you’ll unearth, connections you’ll make, and future working relationships you’ll begin to build. 3. Continue your education but make sure you go beyond the classroom. I do think it’s important to keep studying and workshopping, even if you’re already working professionally. Taking ongoing acting and/or improv class is excellent for keeping your skills fresh. And yet, while training is necessary, it can also become a crutch. It’s a great procrastination technique to tell yourself that you just need to take one more class or one more workshop and THEN you’ll finally be ready to pursue voice-over work. If you’ve already been practicing for a while, if you’ve already been encouraged by your coaches and mentors to seek out more professional work opportunities, then get out there! Start marketing yourself as a voice-over talent and put yourself in the position to find voice-over work. There is so much gained from real-life experience. Onthe-job training is often the greatest teacher. 13

This article, Diversity Doesn’t Stick without Inclusion, published on February 1, 2017 by Laura Sherbin and Ripa Rashid, provides an excellent overview of inclusive leaders. This style of leadership is a conglomeration of six behaviors: • • • • • •
Ensuring that team members speak up and are heard. Making it safe to propose novel ideas. Empowering team members to make decisions. Taking advice and implementing feedback. Giving actionable feedback. Sharing credit for team success.
This insightful and thought-provoking reading acknowledges that, when surveyed, the employees who report that their team leader has at least three of these above behaviors, produce the following results in the workplace: 87% say they feel welcome and included in their team, 87% say they feel free to express their views and opinions, and 74% say they feel that their ideas are heard and recognized. For respondents who reported that their team leader has none of these traits, those percentages dropped to 51%, 46% and 37%, respectively. “Leadership is about influence, nothing more, nothing less,” says leadership expert John C. Maxwell. With this practice in mind, it is worth exploring how leaders must place the needs of others before themselves. In doing so, perhaps we can mirror the data above by being more inclusive, valuing others views and opinions, listening and recognizing their contributions and gifts to our respective organizations. This is a universal theme that can be applied in our corporations, governments, academia, non-profit organizations and churches. 4. It’s more than ok to be a beginner. At the start of your voice-over career, it’s really easy to compare your “beginnings” to someone else’s “middles” but that’s like expecting a first-time driver to be as seasoned at driving as you are; as if they should be as comfortable behind the wheel and have already driven themselves to as many places as you have. That would be a ridiculous expectation, right? And yet we do it all the time! We expect ourselves to have arrived somewhere faster than our feet (or vehicles) can actually take us. A voice-over career – and any career for that matter – should be a continuous, evolutionary journey. If we’re not constantly learning and expanding our knowledge and skill-set, trying new things, and playing and having fun in the process, then wouldn’t our work (and our lives) become incredibly stale? Whether you’re at the start of your VO career or you’re a full-time pro, it is helpful to take on the mindset of a beginner. In this way, we are more focused on the process, more open to experiences as they come, and more present with our work in each moment. And ultimately, that’s all we’ve really got anyway: moments to be present and opportunities to enjoy them. On Saturday, the Renew Now conference kicked off with an amazing prayer and the Phenomenal Emcee herself Sharise L. Erby kept the party going. The event was also a fundraiser for the nonprofit Imperfectly Flawless in which a portion of the J.A.M. proceeds was donated towards this wonderful organization to assist in providing muchneeded support for young ladies who want to get out of a destructive life cycle.
There was not a dry eye in the house when La Donya Yvette shared many events of her life, one of most important was the promise she made to God and her mother before her passing this year on New Year’s night, and that was to stay committed to having this event. La Donya dedicated this event in her mother’s honor which also consisted of the Grace Of A Gladiator Award. She spoke of this being a ‘Giving’ event in which many giveaways, including financial gifts, were given to every attendee which ended up creating a ripple effect of giving. It was an incredible blessing to witness. Overall, this event was so powerful and impactful that you truly had to be there to experience transformation after transformation. #PromiseKept
