Martha High

“Meet The Goddess of Soul”

For over 50 years Martha High has been coursing through the veins of culture and has been an activist through her powerful lyrics and incredible awareness of how unity and change need a soundtrack.

Martha High (born Martha Havin) started her music career with a local Washinton D.C. singing group called The Four Jewels. Later the group changed their name to The Jewels. Martha and the group The Jewels began touring with the God Father of Soul James Brown in 1964. So from the tender age of 19, Martha High has been one of the bedrock members of the Soul, R&B, and Funk genres.

Know as the Goddness of Soul, Martha High continues to make an impact on the music industry with her soulful ballads and silky smooth voice. Her music speaks to the heart of people of color and in particular women.

One of the things that I love about her approach to her delivery is that she invites you into her world and gives you a tour through her lyrics and emotional delivery. Nothing leaves a more indelible mark than an emotional rollercoaster that escorts you through the highs and the lows of the human experience.

The Goddess of Soul has a unique way of enveloping her audience in the soulful sounds of Funk reminiscent of the height of the James Brown era but with a modern-day flair.

Her stage presence and voice range carry the listener on an experience that teleports them to a mystical place where Soul, R&B, and Funk collide in an explosion of musical genius that is second to none.

In her latest project, The Goddess of Soul teams up with Soul Sista Yemaja Jubilee to produce a one-ofa-kind book of poems and painting.

Showing that she is not an artist that can be boxed in, Martha leaves it all on the canvas. With just as much Soul as she puts into your music, she equally pours herself into the artwork that complements these heartfelt poems.

The Goddess of Soul can be seen touring with The Soul Cookers in Paris France.

Summer Boot Camp: 5 Reasons To Focus On Youth Public Speaking Skills Summer is gradually approaching as the school year has now come to a close for many students. My son, James II, now a high school rising junior finished strong this year, placing 3rd in his speech category for the DC/MD metropolitan area. His placement landed him to compete at the National competition. While he competed among more than 300 high school students from around the country (Dramatic Performance category), his confidence has greatly increased from the experience.

Both my wife and I are very proud of him.

Why do I bring this up? Too many young people have something to say but do not have the tools to speak in public effectively and with comfort. Sharpening communication abilities helps young people succeed in a world that demands confidence, articulation, and the ability to clearly communicate ideas. By building superior speaking skills, students will prepare to excel in school, attain their dream jobs, defend their beliefs and values, and become leaders in their schools and communities.

Education Unlimited (educationunlimited.com) is the national leader in providing noncompetitive public speaking summer programs for kids and teens. Education Unlimited was founded in 1993 by a group of speech and debate coaches who developed our innovative curriculum. Their curriculum directors and on-site faculty and staff include coaches at some of the nation’s premier high schools and universities and former speech, debate, and mock trial competitors who reached national levels of success. Courses offered include: Delivery / Persuasive Speaking - This useful activity teaches students to craft and deliver convincing speeches. We begin the week with exercises to practice delivery skills such as voice, gestures, timing, and intonation. When students display comfort with delivery, they will begin to construct speeches based on a topic of their choosing.

Students learn to refine a topic, establish captivating introductions, organize speech content, and deliver compelling conclusions! The focus is on speaking in a natural voice, with few or no notes, rather than writing an essay and merely reading it out loud, the form of “public speaking” taught by most teachers. All students end the week by presenting a speech to their fellow campers.

Intro to Debate - Note, this unit is offered for 6th-8th grade and 9th-12th grade sessions only. Learn the art of verbal combat! Students will learn how to construct persuasive positions, defend against and attack each other’s arguments, and crossexamine effectively. Students will debate a variety of age-and experience-appropriate topics from teams and pit themselves against their co-campers.

5 Reasons to Focus on Public Speaking This Summer!

1. Public speaking is a necessary and indispensable life skill and most people are called upon to speak in public at some point in their lives.

2. Public Speaking improves research and organization abilities - crucial skills for high school and college success.

3. Employers rank public speaking as one of the top skills they look for in employees - students can get a head start on their dream careers by developing skills that will translate into the workforce.

4. Speech and debate activities involve “active construction of knowledge.” allowing students the opportunity to synthesize, analyze, and utilize new information, rather than merely memorizing facts. According to Communication Education, debate can increase critical thinking skills by 44% in one year and high school reading skills by as much as 25% in one year.

5. Speech helps develop social skills, such as confidence, eye contact, poise, and articulation.

In light of the unconventional ways students have had to learn during this pandemic, an activity such as public speaking can be a confident booster for young people who to know not only break into the job market but also be prepared for the interviews that will likely take place for their desired college choice. Communication skills are vital to thriving in our society - no matter what age you are. So, let’s all speak up!

The Butterfly Effect The Spirit Of Significance And Success

Living Life Inspired is truly living a life of Significance! It is a mindful way of thinking about how you view the world and never make it about you or what you can acquire. Instead, make the world about serving others and touching their lives in such a way for them to be successful so that they may rise to do the same.

Significant living inspires Success! Something as simple as a smile can change the entire narrative of someone’s life. Here are few things to consider when connecting with others: 1. Know their triggers, words, actions, and body language. You can’t control what others do or say, but you can control your response, which ordinarily will change their perspective.

2. Think before you speak or act and always season your speech with Grace and consider what impact your words or actions may have.

3. Check your own behavior. What do you do to contribute to civility or incivility?

When you begin to walk in another person’s shoes this can show you the context for his or her words or actions and help you understand what triggered them. When rumors or gossip come your way, don’t get caught up in the madness. Instead, resist looking for someone to blame and remember that in many cases, a problem reflects a systemic shortcoming, not an individual. When you inspire success through significance, the blessing will come back to you.

We have at our fingertips the ability to inspire, empower and instill encouragement of dignity, happiness, and hope by collaborating and pulling together strengths that will empower others to achieve further goals to become the best successful versions of themselves. This process enables transformation in our communities and our country.

Our society today requires servant leaders who are willing to connect globally and contribute to the reality of decision making on all levels including business, environment, education, culture, and government.

A decision is a thought about something. A choice is the action taken behind the decision. So, it is important to choose your thoughts wisely.

The bottom line is this…bringing awareness of the Spirit of Significance matters. It can reduce stress and create an atmosphere of excellence in any business, including your own. If you do not apply it within your daily living, you are literally robbing yourself of your greatest potential as a human being. It’s that simple. It can make life easier for everyone in the world because it starts with you! It starts with all of us. It is said “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.

Success is not an event, but a journey. We are all on our journey to becoming. Some may say we are on different journeys. Well, I say we are on the same journey- which is to Become. We’re actually on different paths to becoming; it’s the experiences that are different.

The Spirit of Significance is a life that adds value to other people which combined with success, is actually a part of living life inspired. When you change your mindset, you literally change your life.

Remember, we’re always growing and expanding. It’s a natural part of life. As we grow and evolve so will our wants, needs, desires and dreams.

Things that make us feel happy, excited, and purpose-driven may not be the same for others. Living significantly keep us open to try new things and give ourselves permission to grow.
