Don’t Ignore The Spider... Part V Talking About The System And Not Talking About Its Maker Is Like Talking About The Web And...

Ignoring The Spider!

~Bro. Bedford Leading On… Last month we did the introduction of the first part of our framework for our upcoming course: The Fundamentals of Leadership. If you missed that article then you want to go back and review it because doing so will make this article mean so much more. In this article we will look at the last 6 modules in our flagship course for our upcoming academy; Delegate Power, Implement the Plan, Oversee The Progress, Assess The Desired Results, Celebrate The Wins, Revisit Challenges.

(1) Delegate Power – I remember hearing my Coach Dr. Ruben West say, unite with the vision but divide the work. When you have a vision that’s too much for you to accomplish by yourself then there has to be some delegation of duties. And that doesn’t always mean that you have determined every single course, but it does mean that you have to put people in place and grant them the authority to complete the task given to them. Grooming them to step up and be accountable for the decision they make is key to them developing the leadership skills they need to step into high roles if needed. They have to have a healthy view of the power they have been given so that they don’t abuse said power.

(2) Implement the Plan – What’s the purpose of doing everything up to this point if you are not going to pull the trigger. If you are not going to TAKE ACTION by doing everything that you said you would then what’s the point. It takes boldness to step out and do what you said. You can think it all day and you can talk about it all night but until you are willing to put your motivation, your muscle, and your money where your mouth is you are just blowing smoke. You have to take action, there is no way around it if you expect to see success. When implementing the plan there has to be a certain amount of flexibility because everything will not always go according to plan.

(3) Oversee The Progress – One of the hardest things for most leaders to do is Oversee The Progress. Most of the time we want to be down in the trenches making it happen.

That is a good approach at first but as things develop leaders have to take a step make and hold those accountable for what they said they were going to do. We have to make sure they have everything they need to accomplish what’s been laid to their charge. We have to make sure they have the resources, the training, and the skills to meet the objective, (4) Assess The Desired Results – As things progress, leaders have to be able to another assessment. This time they have to be able to see if we are on track to reach our target in the desired timeframe. Assessing the desired result means pulling out our proverbial measuring rod and see how the group is measuring up. This is done periodically during the process to maintain an accurate track for all involved parties. This also needs to be done with not only team leads but team members as well to show where they fall in the grand scheme of things.

(5) Celebrate The Wins – I doubt that you can find anyone who does not like a good celebration. I mean when the work has been done and the goals have been reached, there is nothing like celebrating those who put in the work to help you the team to reach that goal. Every leader should have in their budget resources set aside to celebrate the wins, whether it’s a group lunch or family outing, or individual recognition, something needs to be done to help show the team how Team Work makes the Dream Work.

(6) Revisit Challenges – This last one may seem out of place but for any organization to truly grow they have to be willing to honestly admit that there were some things they got wrong and they need to make some adjustments. Some people call this “Lessons Learned” and they can be extremely valuable if they are taken for what are, steps to becoming an “Expert.” Someone once said that an “Expert” was someone who has made every possible mistake in a particular discipline because now they know what not to do.

As a leader, we have to be willing to revisit those things that made it hard for us to reach our goals and figure out a solution for them before we take on our next challenge.

How would I describe our Book tasting event hosted by the S.O.S. Strategy + Obedience = Stability Group? It was Ah-Maze-Zing! From the venue to the food, fellowship, and fun there was never a dull moment. But the real jewel of the event was the life-changing discussion that we freely had.

Some of you may be asking, “What is a Book Tasting?” in layman’s terms it’s like a wine tasting but with a book. And for this event, the book was “Fast and Feast 40 Days & 40 Nights: Journey to Sexual Desire” The book itself was an incredible ride because Chapter 1 grabs you by the throat and throws you up against the wall and it only gets more real from there. The rest of the book is an honest and open look and sexual desire for those in a monogamous marital relationship. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking to get married or for a couple who is engaged, newly married, and even those who have been married for a while. The type of topic discussed in the book are thought-provoking and well worthy of exploration.

The book was a springboard into the deep end of the pool of marital sexual desire which was a “No-Holds-Bared” conversation. We openingly talked about any and everything surrounding sex but it was done in such an easy to engage way that did not make it feel cheap, dirty, or nasty at all.

If anything the discussions were eye-opening and candid which helped all of us gain a greater understanding of our past exposure to sex and we even uncovered some trauma and learned how they affected our current sex life.

Everyone left the event with new eyes of how sexual desire can be one of the most powerful experiences that we can have with our mate if it’s done by following God’s divine will. My wife and I were able to get clarity about several things that were occurring in our marriage And to be honest our sex life has taken on a whole new meaning.

PRESCRIPTION FOR EXCELLENCE With Dr. James J. Williams

How To Set Powerful Public Speaking Goals For Yourself in 2021 If there is one thing this pandemic has taught us – it is self-reflection. This is a time to recalibrate your life and your skillset – especially if you are a public speaker. Very few people set public speaking goals. Even when they know public speaking is an important skill for their personal and professional lives. Why? There is one big reason that I can think of: They don’t know how to do it.

Hopefully, this article is going to simplify the process for you and help you set at least three public speaking goals for yourself. I will share with you the same process I continue to use to set my public speaking goals. I have personally benefited from this process and I have transitioned from an introverted IT engineer to an emerging professional speaker in a short amount of time.

First step: Understand why public speaking is important for your career and life You know deep down that if you can speak and articulate yourself with clarity and confidence, you will have a better career track, more job opportunities, and less stress in your professional and personal life.

Many studies show a correlation between your public speaking skills and success. For example, a recent survey of 1000+ executives (Distinction Communications), indicated that 86% of participating executives attributed a direct correlation between their public speaking skills and their career success. Executives who succeed in their careers understand the power public speaking skills brings to their professional lives.

How about you? Why public speaking is important to you specifically?

Second: break your public speaking goal into three categories: A lot of times public speaking is viewed as a big and overwhelming subject to tackle. Early in my career I heard one of my mentors say that learning public speaking and eating an elephant are similar: You have to do it one bite at a time. I learned to break public speaking into three bites, or three categories and that helped me tremendously.

Three categories of public speaking development 1 – Confidence 2 – Delivery 3 – Structure and Organization Third: Set a goal for each category.

Once you have the three categories, you have to set a goal for each. Each goal has to be specific, timely, and measurable. This works best if you do it in writing or typing. Get a pen and paper or pull out a document on your computer and type it in.

1 – Confidence The first category you want to set a goal for is your confidence. This a corner-stone category; without it nothing else matters. You can have the best content ever, and you can know all the bells and whistles of delivery, but if you can’t stand in front of a group without shaking in your boots, everything gets thrown out of the window.

Write or type your goal now for this category. Use the examples below to guide you.

• By June 1st 20xx, I speak in front of groups of people and feel comfortable. (note that

I use present tense for the goal).

• By March 1st 20xx, I speak in front of the executives in my company with the same

confidence I speak in front of my direct reports. (note that I measure the goal based on

my feeling, not by what other people say).

• By April 1st 20xx, I feel comfortable applying for a leadership position that requires

public speaking.

2 – Delivery How to keep your audience engaged, how to keep your audience entertained, how to move on stage, and what to do with your hands, all fall under delivery.

Write or type your goal now for this category. Use the examples below to guide you.

• By February 1st 2021, I know how to engage my audience three different ways.

• By March 1st 2021, I move on stage with purpose and modulate my voice.

3 – Structure and Organization How to structure your talks, how to structure your executive briefings, how to structure your project updates, and how to structure a conference talk vs a technical talk, all fall under structure and organization.

• By March 1st 2021, I know how to structure a presentation from beginning to end.

• By June 1st 2021, I can structure my thoughts on the spot at executive meetings.

• By June 1st 2021, I know how add emotional elements to my presentations to engage

my audience.

• By June 1st 2021, I know how to structure business stories.

• By December 1st 2021, I can create a presentation or a keynote in less than 1 hour.

Either take trainings, go to Toastmasters, hire a coach, attend a free workshop, or read a book.

Then start applying and practicing at every opportunity you get until you achieve your goal.

The secret to getting better at public speaking is to do it and keep doing it. There are no magic bullets that will get you to speak better overnight. You have to put in the work and build the momentum.

Malcom Gladwell shared a study in his book “Outliers” showing that most of the famous geniuses that we know of have spent about 10,000 hours practicing their craft before they made any breakthrough in their field. That includes Einstein, The Beatles, and Mozart. These people did not become geniuses overnight, they had to work on it.

Same applies to you. Look at your reasons for why public speaking is important to you and ask yourself if you are willing to put in the work to become better. If the answer is yes, then gift yourself this holiday season with time and action in setting your speaking goal.
