hen you first see the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory over the Penobscot River between the towns of Prospect and Verona, Maine, it’s hard not to look up in awe. Not only is it a huge structure, it is aesthetically pleasing with its 447 foot towers on each end of the bridge and the massive diagonally-placed cable stays tying the structure together. It is truly—pardon the cliché—a work of art. Due to the critical need to have a new bridge constructed before the old bridge was unusable, the State of Maine Department of Transportation selected a designbuild format allowing construction to begin immediately while other portions of the project were still being designed. Cianbro teamed with Reed & Reed to form a joint partnership and won the bid to construct the new bridge. This type of project approach allowed stakeholders to work together as partners from start to finish during the design and construction phases, coordinating all their efforts, and work through issues together.
