Inspiration
Kou
The Kou tree was both native and brought with the first polynesian voyagers to Hawai'i. They have been traditionally planted near homes and community spaces as they are very resiliant and provide shade and support. As well as being a source of shade, the wood from the trees was used for dishes, containers and utensils. The leaves were also used as a dye and the flowers were made into leas.
The Manu o Kū Is a bird native to Hawai'i. They fly out to sea in the morning to dive for small fish and back towards land at night. This knowledge was used by Hawaiian navigators to detect land before they could see it, in the same way that HDI hopes to promote early detection of Dementias before obvious signs have shown.
