AN EVOLUTIONARY ERA Dear Friends, It is my pleasure and privilege to be writing to you as CHW’s 25th National President!

I am originally from Montreal and moved to Toronto 28 years ago. It wasn’t long after that, in 1997, that I was introduced to the wonderful work of CHW and jumped right in. I’ve been very fortunate to visit Israel multiple times and to witness the impact of CHW’s support at all our beloved projects. Our Centennial trip in 2017 will always be a highlight for me and I am very proud to devote the next two years of my life to continue the amazing work accomplished by past CHW National Presidents.

As I write this and look outside my window at the blowing snow, I’m very excited that you’ll receive this Orah Magazine in time for early spring and the promise of a new season before us with great things to come! I am hopeful that we will all have our vaccines soon so we can return to some version of normal life. Thank goodness for Zoom events, but how nice will it be when we can meet again in person!

Our 2021 Annual Campaign is now in full swing. I hope you will be inspired in reading the pages that follow about all the life-changing work that has been achieved at our partner organizations thanks to your generous support. I have been truly blown away by the resilience of our CHW staff, donors and volunteers. Our Centres and Chapters across the country continue to pivot and have turned physical events into wonderful virtual events and fundraisers.

It is a season of change on many levels. We are saying thank you and paying tribute to our outgoing National Executive Director, Alina Ianson. She has worked tirelessly for the past twelve years to bring CHW to new heights. On behalf of the CHW Board of Directors, we wish Alina all the very best as she begins her next chapter.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Lisa Colt-Kotler, our new National Executive Director. We are looking forward to working with Lisa to continue CHW’s mission of passionately supporting projects and services for Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel and Canada.

REDEFINING PHILANTHROPY Dear Friends,

When I joined the CHW professional team back in 1999, big events dominated the fundraising landscape. CHW, like most philanthropic organizations at the time, held big semiannual meetings and tri-annual national conventions for 500+ people.

In the early 2000’s, the Internet changed the world as we knew it and drastically affected the way we do business, access information, and interact. As such, big meetings lost their appeal and were replaced by email communication, attractive e-newsletters, small boutique events, and a multichannel marketing approach to fundraising.

The growth of mobile technology in the 2010’s brought information to our fingertips and made giving easier than ever. At the same time, easy access to information had its challenges. Being flooded by information without even having to leave our couches, we were overloaded with information and our attention span shrunk. For charities, this meant bringing impact reporting and success stories to a whole new level with very brief up-to-the minute video reports, interactive social media posts, and apps. Big fundraising events were replaced by multiple smaller-scale events throughout the year, giving plenty of opportunity to support our wonderful organization while enjoying fun programmes and social interaction.

As 2020 unfolded, we realized that we are living through a truly transformative time in philanthropy. With the COVID-19 pandemic stay-at-home orders forcing all organizations to take fundraising online, virtual events of all kinds - from walks, to panels, to concerts - helped to foster community relations and maintain financial viability. During this time, we discovered that just like live events, virtual events can help organizations build loyalty and attract financial support needed to fulfil their mission.

In the true spirit of CHW, our dedicated volunteers and supporters ran a multitude of creative and very successful Zoom events. We also learnt very quickly from our Zoom event experiences and identified some sustainable and scalable successful strategies, specifically: meticulous planning; keeping events short; paying attention to cyber security; thinking beyond a single event by launching a multi-part event series; circulating event video after the live session ends; attracting a broader audience since the events do not have geographic limitations. And there is a silver lining: virtual event costs are minimal, which substantially increases the impact of every charitable dollar!

As we are preparing to transition away from the pandemic, we all know that the world will be different on so many levels. However, our values, and our love for our community and our Jewish Homeland will remain as strong as ever. After 23 years with CHW, I also will be leaving my position as CHW National Executive Director to launch my own business. I look to the future of CHW with great enthusiasm as I welcome new National Executive Director Lisa Colt-Kotler.

There is no way to deny that the past 10 months have been difficult times for the world, our country, our community, our organizations and our families.

We have had to pivot our work to the virtual world and find new ways to program, fundraise and engage our members.

Madrichim (staff) training has begun and our new staff are being educated about leadership and their role in our community, Israel education with over 100 participants that started in January and followed up with a Holocaust education session led by Israeli educator, Ayal Beer.

In the beginning we wondered if Canadian Young Judaea would survive the cancellation of our summer camps, Israel programs and all conventions and in person sessions. What we found out is that any organization can show strength in good times but when success happens in the darkest of times it shows the true character of a Movement. On any given day of the week CYJ is holding programs for JOLT, Youth Council and Manhigim in Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Vancouver.

COVID will not stop us, restrictions on gatherings will not stop us, CYJ will provide premier leadership, Jewish value based programming to our members and their families. That is a commitment not only to our community but to our supporters like CHW as well.

We are proud of the involvement of HAC staff and graduates during the coronavirus pandemic.

Many of our teaching faculty from our Departments of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Biotechnology were called upon recently to help diagnose those affected by the virus.

We’re using the catchphrase “Always Essential” to characterize how these disciplines, among others at HAC, enable our students to integrate into a variety of critical healthcare and research positions upon graduation. Recently, senior students in our

CHW Centre for Clinical Training & Community Care have renewed the provision of paramedical services for the public - an important part of their clinical training. And, The DAN Department of Creative Human Design has been extremely helpful by devising innovative protective devices to enable these services to comply with strict new health guidelines. We thank you for being our committed partners, wish you continued good health, and hope to see you again soon in Jerusalem.

I’m writing this in January in anticipation of a signature event in February when Hadassah International joins with Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America in a virtual Gala – “Coming Together to Heal our World” – a global benefit for Hadassah Hospitals.

The Coronavirus pandemic disrupted all of our lives. As educators, we were forced to quickly adapt to new safety measures and worked hard to reach every student during lockdowns.

Thanks to CHW’s support, our Patisserie students were able to continue developing their talents and skills, always giving back and sharing their baked delicacies with other students and the wider community.

We took extra measures to reach our most vulnerable students with severe challenges at home. Our school became a vital safety netassisting with essential items such as food, hygiene products and even computers, so students could continue to learn with dignity.

We greatly value and appreciate CHW’s ongoing support. Thank you for bringing hope and opportunity when we needed it most.

As frontline professionals, we worked tirelessly to combat the devastating impact of the virus. We took extra measures to ensure that our hospital was saferevamping entire wards to treat the sudden influx of critically ill patients.

We accessed the most advanced Dr. Osnat Levtzion-Korach medical equipment and completed the construction of a state-of-the-art, underground Emergency Department. We did so, alongside treating thousands of people requiring emergency and routine medical care.

As Israel leads an ambitious COVID-19 vaccination campaign, we are full of hope and pray that the year ahead will be better.

We are proud to be at the forefront of these efforts, vaccinating all hospital staff, highrisk and elderly individuals in our district.

Moreover, Judaism as a faith and way of life encourages optimism.

It is in our DNA to focus on the positive and look for the “silver lining in every cloud”.

Although for most of 2020, we may have been physically apart, in many ways we have been more connected than ever.

Healing Broken Families with Keren Ian Ginat This story is based on an interview with Keren Ian Ginat, Social Worker at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village After 18 years of practicing law, Keren Ian Ginat decided to change her life by becoming a social worker. She felt very strongly about helping children in a direct and impactful way. She found new meaning in life when she got her “dream job” at CHW Hadassim Children and Youth Village working with at-risk girls, who live together in a supportive Family Unit.

In fact, the entire CHW Hadassim therapeutic team remained on the frontline, supporting vulnerable children and families through the Healing Broken Families (HBF) programme during the tumultuous months of the pandemic. CHW Hadassim became a lifeline for many girls Keren has been assisting, like Galia, who arrived at Hadassim at the age of 13 to escape a crisis at home. Like all the children living in the Family Units, Galia depends on the emotional and psychological support and nutritious meals offered at the youth village.

Keren was deeply concerned that after months of steady progress, the lockdown meant a setback for Galia’s emotional well-being. “I remember the first time I met Galia, she was confused and shaken. While her parents were going through a bitter divorce, Galia looked for ways to escape the misery at home. She started drinking and experimenting with drugs.”

Keren Ian Ginat However, a year into her role, Keren suddenly found herself in the middle of a rapidly changing environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many, Keren was deeply concerned about Israel’s national lockdown and the sudden closure of all educational institutions to help curb the spread of the virus. She knew that isolation at home would trigger major anxiety and painful memories for the girls she worked with, sharing, “home is not always a safe place, that’s why we’re here.”

Like many at-risk youth, Galia felt she couldn’t speak with anybody about her frustrations. Keren shares, “Galia’s parents were clearly dealing with their own crisis and couldn’t see their daughter’s distress. She had no parental figure to look up to. The Israeli welfare authorities recognized that Galia was in a dangerous situation and intervened with a court order to take Galia to CHW Hadassim.” Although Galia’s parents did not agree on much, they realized that they were close to losing their daughter.

Thanks to the Healing Broken Families programme and Keren’s guidance, Galia and her parents have been given hope, slowly reconnecting and rebuilding trust. Galia’s mother, Eti, is eager to salvage her relationship with her daughter. She never missed a group therapy session, even when they shifted to Zoom. In fact, Keren was surprised to see how effective online therapy has been in uniting more parents through a ‘virtual safe space’. Zoom has unexpectedly provided a neutral and non-threatening setting to begin important conversations that support the healing process.

As Israel entered its third national lockdown, Keren continues to assess and support the changing needs of children and families. “Although the crisis caused major upheaval for everyone, children from broken families are always disproportionately affected.” Previous traumas, combined with stress at home can be overwhelming and even dangerous, especially for girls as their education and support networks are interrupted. “We know that children with underlying emotional and family issues would likely experience it worse during the pandemic. It’s not just a matter of reliable internet connections or computers: they also need to be safe and well taken care of.”

While there is still so much uncertainty about the future, Keren is reminded daily that she is exactly where she’s meant to be. “Despite the challenges, it’s been rewarding to see how members of broken families find their way back to each other. Just this past week, Galia’s mother and grandmother came to the youth village to prepare a beautiful homemade meal with the girls. Everyone had so much fun chopping, chatting, and laughing together. It was clear that Galia found the love and comfort she longed for, with her family and friends.”

Leading the COVID-19 Vaccination Rollout in Israel with Prof. Alon Hershko Interview with Prof. Alon Hershko, Director of The Department of Medicine and Internal Medicine, Hadassah Ein Kerem; President of the Israeli Association of Allergy and Clinical Immunology

Hadassah Hospital is at the forefront of treating the largest number of COVID-19 patients in Israel. We met with Professor Alon Hershko to discuss Israel’s vaccination campaign.

Israel has one of the highest COVID-19 vaccination rates per capita. What makes the country a leader in the global vaccination campaign?

I think we have unique strengths in Israel, which help us through this crisis period. First of all, we love innovation! We embrace new technology, we are always eager to try something new. We don’t fear the vaccine, like some other nations.

We welcome it.

Another reason we’re able to lead and succeed in this campaign is the fact that we have a very good infrastructure. We have the Health Maintenance Insurance that provide both health insurance and medical treatment throughout the country. So, we have a lot of outpatient clinics, making it easier for us to reach everyone in their community.

Israel is also one of the only countries in the world where all citizens’ medical files were completely digitized over 25 years ago!

Our nation’s vaccination rollout is unprecedented. Everyone is looking up to us to get information. My colleagues and I have received a lot of phone calls for consultations from Italy, Austria, Argentina... People are eager to learn from our experience.

What advice can you give to those who are concerned over the safety of the vaccine or an increased risk of allergic reactions?

In just a few short weeks, Israel completed 2 million vaccinations, reaching about a quarter of the population. I happen to be the President of the Israeli Association of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. We just published a position paper as we discovered the safety profile of the vaccine is very good. We also issued Coronavirus Vaccination Guidelines, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. We are definitely ahead of the world in terms of protocols for treating patients with allergies. Out of the 20 million vaccine doses administered to date worldwide, only a few cases of a specific allergic reaction to a component of the vaccine have been documented. Furthermore, there has not been one single case of mortality resulting from the vaccine. When vaccines were first arriving, some medical professionals thought that everyone who uses an EpiPen should not be vaccinated. Our argument was that the allergy reaction is very specific and quite rare.

Hadassah Hospital was one of the first Institutions to issue a bold statement that all staff must be vaccinated with one of the COVID-19 vaccines available in Israel. What has the response been like?

Working on the frontline of the pandemic, we don’t need to consult the statistics or see any graphs, we witness severe COVID-19 cases and serious complications caused by the virus on a daily basis. I think this is what motivated all of us to get vaccinated. Hypothetically speaking, the worst reaction to the vaccine could not compare with the severe COVID-19 conditions that we’ve seen first-hand in some patients. When you’re on the frontline, it’s very easy to conclude that getting vaccinated is much better than getting the virus itself.

How is Hadassah Hospital coping with yet another influx of critically ill patients in the midst of Israel’s third national lockdown?

Currently, our COVID-19 wards are over capacity.

In fact, the number of COVID-19 patients doubled in the last couple of weeks, but our staff, of course, didn’t double! So, every morning we re-assess the needs and our incredible team is not afraid to adapt to the challenging reality.

Early on in the pandemic, you understood how isolated patients felt in the COVID-19 ward and asked staff to wear a tag with a picture of themselves smiling over their protective gear. How are you able to connect with patients and families today?

It’s a constant challenge, but during these unprecedented times, connecting with patients is critical. Our patients are here alone, far from everything they love and know. Wearing our best smile is the least we can do to uplift their spirits. We have met so many remarkable families over the past few months. Just yesterday, I was approached by a family that demanded a lot of our attention. They were very concerned about their elderly mother, who was in critical condition. I spoke to one of her sons and asked him how we could help and support his family.

He told me, ‘listen, you have a very important person in your ward. We’re a big Charedi family and your patient has 500 offspring if you count her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildrenand every one of them is concerned!’ We had to sit down together and carefully plan how the flow of information and updates will happen moving forward. He was officially appointed ‘Chief Spokesperson’ of the family! I’m so happy we were able to resolve the issue and reassure the entire family in the process.

For the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic, Hadassah Ein Kerem is over-capacity and re-directing ambulances to Hadassah Mount Scopus. Why is this unfolding now in Jerusalem?

The situation is truly challenging since Jerusalem accounts for 25% of national COVID-19 cases!

Jerusalem is a truly unique city, not only because of its history and beauty, but also because of its demographic. We have such a multicultural, multilingual, mixed population. Within the Jewish population, you find a mix of secular, Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox communities. Within the Arab population, you have Muslims and Christians. A lot of these communities are very traditional and have big families. They are used to having large family gatherings and/or live together.

We genuinely hope that things will change for the better in the next few weeks as we begin to see the first results of the vaccination campaign. I hope that Israel will be the first country to stop the epidemic with the help of the vaccine and the rest of the world will quickly follow.

Hershko, could you share some personal information with our readers?

On a personal note, I was born at Hadassah Hospital 55 years ago. My father, Chaim Hershko, was a hematologist at Hadassah. My daughter is now a resident in internal medicine here at Hadassah, and my other daughter is in her first year of medical school. My wife, Klilah Hershko, is a dermatologist and a Hadassah graduate. I’m proud to share that we have more fine candidates on the way as well. You could say, I’m heavily invested here and happily so!

A Ray of Hope in the “Shadow Pandemic” with Michal Orion Sagi Based on an Interview with Michal Orion Sagi, Head of the WIZO Emergency Shelter for Women and Children A year dominated by COVID-19 has shown that isolating at home does not assure safety. For many women and children, staying at home poses greater risks. During Israel’s first lockdown, the number of restraining orders against intimate partners jumped by 20% while police investigations of domestic violence cases increased fivefold over the previous year. While an estimated 200,000 women are currently living with violence and fear as they are isolated with their abusers, a recent survey shows that only 30% of women know where to turn to for help. It’s a dangerous trend seen across the world, coined as “the shadow pandemic” by the United Nations.

True to its mission, WIZO is leading the way to end violence against women by stepping up emergency support and services for women during such a critical time. Demand for WIZO emergency helplines increased by 300% during peak periods of Israel’s first lockdown. Call volume to a unique hotline for men seeking help to end the cycle of violence increased by 40% from the previous year. To protect women, WIZO converted a training centre into an Emergency Shelter for Women and Children, the first shelter to open in over 15 years. With private, self-contained rooms, a communal dining area and a spacious open courtyard, it became a safehaven for over 150 women and 220 children escaping violence since opening in May 2020.

Michal Orion Sagi Michal Orion Sagi, an experienced social worker, was asked to head the Emergency Shelter as it was about to open in a secret, central location of Israel. “Women are suffering more than ever during the lockdown. Being trapped inside with their abusers makes it difficult for them to seek help as they don’t have privacy.” Michal and her team have been working on the frontline, assisting women and children at all hours of the day. “We’re here for the women who managed to escape. Some arrive scarred from the physical violence they’ve endured, while others are traumatized by years of emotional and psychological abuse.

The pandemic exacerbated problems that already existed. We also see how the pandemic-related financial stress has triggered a new wave of violence.”

There is a constant rotation of women and children seeking emergency protection at the shelter. Women like Bisma*, who fled with her 12-year-old daughter just hours before Israel’s second lockdown. Bisma lived with her husband’s extended family in difficult conditions. When the pandemic hit, her husband and two older sons lost their jobs. The tension at home quickly escalated to physical violence.

Despite her many attempts to keep out of the way, there was nowhere to hide.

Her husband’s frustrations were taken out on her. Her sons became abusive to her daughter. Michal recalls the first counselling session with Bisma, where she had described her life as “living hell.” Over the next two weeks, Michal and her team helped Bisma carefully plan her next steps. Together, they decided on a long-term rehabilitation shelter near a school that could also support Bisma’s daughter as they began a new life.

Michal was keen to point out that not all the women come from such difficult socioeconomic backgrounds. “Violence can happen in any household. We’ve had many accomplished and professional women come through our doors. We recently helped a woman who works for a prominent high tech company. She had been working from home for months, but when her husband lost his job, life became unbearable. He was used to being in control of the family and grew resentful when his wife became the sole provider. His obsessive, coercive and controlling behaviour became extreme, making her feel like a hostage at home. When his threats turned violent, she took her three children and fled.”

Reflecting on the past few months, Michal shares; “We’re working in a very unique context right now. Even as trained professionals, it’s hard to witness what transpires behind closed doors during lockdown. We’re often the first ones to listen to these brave women as they share their painful stories.

These stories stay with us. They come home with us. So, we often feel the effects of secondary trauma, especially as our own lives are disrupted because of the pandemic.

We work hard as a team to support each other and we’re comforted to know that when these women move on, WIZO is there to help.” As Israel entered a third national lockdown, Michal knows that the shelter, unfortunately, will be over capacity and their difficult, but critically important work to save lives will continue.

These daycares provide warm and educationally-enriching environments throughout a critical period of a child’s development. CHW prepares students for a bright future as they acquire their education or vocation at CHW Netanya Technological High School.

CHW proudly continues to support at-risk youth at Hadassim and Nahalal Children and Youth Villages and schools, dormitories, and family units. Youth Clubs provide the ideal after-school destination where students receive hot meals, tutoring, and enjoy recreational activities.

During our Centennial year, CHW established a brand new partnership with Hadassah Academic College (HAC). The goal of this partnership is to support students studying at HAC through scholarships, and provide support for academic programs and projects.

CHW also supports Canadian Young Judaea Summer Camps in Canada.

Improving Healthcare CHW supports state-of-the-art medical facilities at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital. The new fundraising goals for 2021 include upgrading the Labour and Delivery Room at The Rady Mother and Child Center, Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus.

We are continuing our fundraising goal to create a new state-of-theart modern Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (recently renamed The Debbie Eisenberg and Gary Levene PICU) at The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh).

The goal is to accommodate more patients, prevent cross infection, and add new monitors, artificial respiration equipment, syringe pumps, and other equipment, as well as furnishing a consultation room. These improvements will certainly have a positive impact on the critically ill babies, children, and adolescents in the PICU, as well as their parents and families.

The new CHW Centre for Clinical Training & Community Care at Hadassah Academic College (HAC) will enhance the training of speech and language pathologists and audiologists, and the delivery of quality care to Jerusalem’s most at-risk children and adults, serving both Jewish and Arab Communities.

The new CHW Centre represents a significant and concrete contribution to the advancement of medical education and clinical service in Jerusalem.

Supporting Women The WIZO Parental Hotline provides a listening ear and advice to parents from all walks of life. However, the majority of callers are single mothers.

Specially trained volunteers offer support and guidance to women and their children, ensuring that both can thrive.

For the women who are victims of domestic violence, it is often impossible to find a way out. WIZO Shelters provide services and counselling for women and their children who have experienced domestic violence, offering a safe haven.

The Calgary Bat-Yam Women’s Centre delivers many programs to the Bat-Yam community, including skills training, Single-Parent, Golden Age, Mother and Daughter, and Young Women’s Support groups.

A Passion For Photography Bruno Lavi, Deputy Director of Hadassah Medical Organization, has spent much of his professional career at the forefront of Israel’s major hospitals. In his leisure time, he developed a passion for photography.

Over the last four years Bruno has been documenting the beautiful corners of the world, as well as local attractions, like the distinct quarters of Jerusalem. Although each of Bruno’s photographs tells a unique story, they all have a common theme: his deep and personal connection with people.

When COVID-19 hit Israel, Bruno was on the frontline of Hadassah Hospital’s emergency response to the deadly pandemic.

He witnessed an influx of people entering the Hospital’s COVID-19 Ward and decided to capture and tell their individual stories through the lens of a harsh pandemic reality unfolding in the ancient city of Jerusalem.

Bruno shares, “There was a feeling of connection with history. I assume this is how photographers feel when taking pictures during a time of war. The first feeling is sadness. I saw people coming to Hadassah from all over the country.

They looked confused and lost: one moment they were healthy, going about their daily routine, and the next moment their lives were turned upside down.”

After several intense days of documenting what transpired, Lavi reflected on the experience of combining his two worlds as he photographed within the hospital:

“Deep silence. These are the words that come to my mind as I enter the COVID-19 Department. The world seems to be split in parts: patients and therapists; religious and secular; women and men; Jews and Arabs; patients on ventilators and off ventilators... But after a few minutes of being there, everything blends into a new dynamic reality with its new and clear rules.”

Bruno’s photos are getting international attention and well-deserved recognition.

He is the Grand Prize Winner for the 2021 International Council of Nurses (ICN) Photo Contest, which received over 200 submissions from 22 countries.

His beautiful black and white photo of Nurse Rawan Hijana wearing a mask and shield, encapsulates what healthcare professionals are facing globally. Bruno shares, “I am deeply honoured to win this photo contest and to witness and capture many special moments in the COVID-19 Department. I was privileged to see how our dedicated nurses care for their patients: the way parents care for their children.”

CHW CALGARY Chanukah Toy Drive For over 17 years, CHW Calgary has held a toy drive prior to Chanukah. The toys are given to Jewish Family Services (JFS) and the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) for distribution to families who cannot afford any extras. CHW Calgary is proud that the 2020 Toy Drive provided toys, movie passes, and gift cards at the ACH and JFS. This mitzvah project supports the local community and reflects CHW’s values in investing in Children, Healthcare, and Women.

Scholarship at Mount Royal University CHW Calgary has established a scholarship at Mount Royal University to enable a full-time student enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration with a minor in Social Innovation and Non-profit Studies to continue their studies. The first award was presented in September, 2017, in honour of CHW’s Centennial year.

CHW EDMONTON Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary Since 2009, CHW Edmonton has proudly sponsored the Terry Horwitz Memorial Bursary. The Bursary celebrates Terry’s life, and honours her work with children in the early learning years. The $1,500 annual bursary is awarded to full-time, second-year students enrolled in the Early Learning and Child Care program at MacEwan University in Edmonton. Terry Horwitzz’l graduated from the program in 2004.

Award in Women’s and Gender Studies For over 25 years, CHW Edmonton has provided the University of Alberta with $4,000 annually to support student bursaries and scholarships. The Hadassah WIZO Canada Award is bestowed upon undergraduate students, enrolled in the Women’s and Gender Studies program at the University of Alberta, based on academic achievement and financial needs.

CHW TORONTO The Jerome D. Diamond Adolescent Centre (JDD) CHW Toronto Centre’s newest commitment, The Jerome D. Diamond Adolescent Centre (JDD), is a mental health centre that provides services to teens between the ages of 12 and 17 who are experiencing psychological, behavioural and/or academic challenges. Classroom instruction and counselling services are provided to students, while parents, legal guardians, siblings, and other family members receive required support. Services help manage students’ issues, with the goal of rejoining the mainstream with newfound competence and skills. CHW Toronto Centre is proud to support the Experiential Learning Programs at the JDD and ensure mental healthcare needs for local youth are met.

Canadian Young Judaea (CYJ) JOLT Program CHW Toronto Centre supports the JOLT Program at CYJ. JOLT, or Jewish Outreach Leadership Training, is CYJ’s flagship program for youth tikkun olam, or community outreach. Participants in the program receive a minimum of 20 hours of community service and have the opportunity to engage in active, social causes and receive hands-on experience volunteering in the community. The main educational objectives of the JOLT programs are: leadership, tikkun olam, development of Jewish identity, and developing ties to their kvutza/community. CHW Toronto Centre is proud to be connected with CYJ and helping to make a difference in the lives of so many young adults.

CHW MONTREAL MADA Community Center MADA is a volunteer-based organization whose central purpose is fighting poverty in the Montreal community. Providing a safe haven for those in need, MADA offers many social and crisis services free of charge to its patrons. CHW Montreal lends a helping hand throughout the year by contributing non-perishable food items at Chanukah and when other opportunities arise.

Volunteers have proudly participated in the Shabbat to Share Program.

CHW Montreal Pro-Am Supports the Myra’s Kids Foundation Summer Camp A portion of the proceeds from the Pro-Am For Kids Golf Tournament will be donated to support the Myra’s Kids Foundation Summer Camp. The Summer Camp is a free non-denominational bereavement camp for children and teenagers, ages 6 to 17, grieving the death of a parent or sibling. It provides a traditional, fun, and high-energy camp experience, combined with grief education and emotional support. Over the 3-day camp experience, their goal is to provide a safe place and space for bereaved children to honour the memory of a special person who has died.

CHW OTTAWA Maureen O’Neil Award in Women’s Studies Offered through Carleton University, this award was endowed in 1985 by CHW in honour of Maureen O’Neil, Coordinator, Status of Women Canada. It is awarded annually, when merited, to a student enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research who is doing work in Women’s Studies.

CHW VANCOUVER Jewish Family Services Agency CHW Vancouver has proudly partnered with various local organizations over the years. CHW Vancouver continues to provide new and gently used toiletries and cosmetic items to women in need through the Salvation Army Homestead, The WISH Drop-In Centre, and Jewish Family Services.

Fran Belzberg

Woman of

Valour

After finally settling in Los Angeles, her father loaned his voice to narrate several films about the Holocaust.

Charity was always important in her home. She shares, “we always had a Pushke in our family. My mother went around the neighborhood collecting them. My father’s mantra was that we must all pay rent for the space we occupy on this earth.”

Fran believes that as a woman, she has a voice in this world, and that it should be used to help those in need. After getting involved with CHW, programs and services for children, especially the Youth Aliyah program, captured a special place in her heart. She shares, “my special interest in children is helping them develop into their full potential, and that we as adults should give them every opportunity to achieve that.”

Fran Belzberg is a long time CHW supporter that currently lives in Vancouver, BC. Her journey with CHW began in 1950, when she moved to Edmonton, AB as a new bride. When she arrived in the small town with dirt roads, very few telephones, and limited indoor plumbing, the first call she made was to the local CHW chapter to find like-minded Jewish women who wanted to make a difference in the world.

“When you come into a closed community as a total stranger, it’s often very difficult to become acclimated and to become inclusive. CHW gave me that opportunity. When I called, they were warm and welcoming and put me in the right hands. So I have to say thank you to Hadassah for welcoming me to Canada as a young bride!”

Fran’s desire to make change was instilled in her from the beginning. Born in Los Angeles, California, her family emigrated from Poland. Her father was very involved in religiosity, and started a synagogue in every small community the family went.

With 40 immediate family members, including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren living in Israel, Fran makes the trip multiple times a year to see them. During her visits to Israel, she has also had the opportunity to see many CHW projects firsthand, and the impact that they have had on so many lives.

All of the beliefs that were instilled in her from a young age and her commitment to Jewish life, plus her ability to do it gave her the desire to become a Woman of Valour. “I feel gratified that I have the funds, the ability, and the desire to be involved. My involvement has given me much more back than I have contributed.

It makes me feel more like a human being, like an accomplished woman.”

Fran encourages anyone who has the means to make a major gift to consider becoming a Woman of Valour. “I would say to anyone who can afford to make a major gift anywhere, and their heart is with CHW, then certainly it is a positive place to put your money. CHW deals with so many aspects of Jewish life, not only in Israel, but in Canada, which ripples through other parts of the world. If any woman has the financial wherewithal, and has a choice of where to donate, I would certainly give to CHW, because its wings spread so far.

A MOVING TRIBUTE To Alina Ianson by Roslyn Joseph

Roslyn Joseph, CHW Director, paid a moving tribute to Alina Ianson, National Executive Director, at the CHW Annual General Meeting held on October 26, 2020 over Zoom.

Dear Friends, It is always a pleasure when one is called upon to pay tribute to a deserving individual and today it is indeed very fitting that we pay tribute to a very admirable colleague, Alina Ianson.

Alina was born in Moldavia, which was then a part of the Soviet Union. Her father was a star performer with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad and her mother was a prima ballerina with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow.

As a result, they traveled a lot and she was raised mostly by her grandmother to whom she was very close. When asked as a little girl if she wanted to be a ballerina when she grew up, which certainly would have been understandable under the circumstances, she said “no, she wanted to be a director of stage performances.” Even at this young age, Alina knew she wanted to be in charge.

Before coming to Canada, she worked as an administrator and/or consultant for several companies in Europe, amongst them the United Nations Development program, the European Union TACIS program and FRECON International Consulting in Hamburg. In 1999, two months after arriving in Canada from Moldavia, past CHW National Executive Director Lily Frank brought Alina into CHW as the National Office Coordinator and, two years later, she became National Director of Operations across Canada.

In December 2008, Alina was promoted to CHW National Executive Director. To list all that Alina accomplished in these 21 years with CHW would not be possible, however, we should recognize some of the major ones. These include bringing CHW into the new technological age with advanced donor management software; revised policy and financial management; the development of CHW brand standards; and the strategic planning of national fundraising initiatives.

Alina also oversaw CHW’s major move to Toronto, and a complete overhaul of operations dictated by the CRA that all non-profits had to comply with in short order.

Alina also traveled a great deal. There were trips to our centres across Canada, and several times a year, to our raison d’être, Israel, and the facilities that we support. While in Israel, so much work had to be done with the various leaders of each project, each with different needs and problems to solve. At the end of most days while others may have wanted to relax, Alina was ready for a night out of laughing, wining and dining with her Canadian confrères.

Alina was National Executive Director during the terms of six different Presidents, each with her own personality and leadership style. It is to her credit that she worked smoothly with each and every one.

During one’s lifetime many paths are taken. We are fortunate that one path led you, Alina, to CHW and we appreciate the 21 years of accomplishment, innovation, and dedication which you gave to us.

We hope that when you look back on your career, CHW will stand out in your memory as a path well taken. We wish you the very best on whatever the future holds for you.

As Alina Ianson is winding down her 22-year tenure with CHW, 12 of which she served as National Executive Director, we are pleased to announce a Tribute Fund in her honour.

Alina has worked tirelessly to bring many changes to the organization, ushering in the era of Canada’s new Not-for-Profit Act in 2012, and most recently achieving CHW’s highest annual income of over $5,000,000.

SUSTAINER Renna Bassal Since my first trip to Israel as a teenager, I have been a staunch Zionist. Naturally, it was a very easy decision to join CHW. Attending the first meeting, Sonia Zukerz’l, whom I had never met before asked if I would host a fashion show in my home. I immediately had the feeling that one did not say “no” to Sonia and the rest is history.

It is now 35 years since attending that initial meeting and becoming part of the exceptional Anna Zaitchick Chapter - truly a sisterhood of women, devoted to the well-being of Israel. We had great fun, friendship, and a sense of accomplishment working at our famous “Hadassah Bazaars,” Fashion Shows, Falafel Booths, Boutique Days, and Antique Auctions. Virtually any idea that would raise much needed funds was pursued, hard work was never a deterrent!

It was very easy to develop a passion for the organization, seeing the impact our efforts had made in so many lives. Whether it was helping immigrant children, Israeli children at risk, research in Autism and Stem Cells, funding an artificial heart program, or many other projects, our work, reached all sectors of Israeli life and continues with different initiatives today.

Over the years, I have held a variety of positions: Chapter President, Montreal Executive Committee Member, National Healthcare Services Chairperson, and eventually CHW Montreal Centre President. It has all been a great honour. Being part of this wonderful organization also afforded me the opportunity of meeting extraordinary, like-minded women from coast to coast.

After countless trips, I still feel that “one can never do too much for our beloved State”. By making the commitment to become a Sustainer, I know the work of CHW will continue into the future.

IN CONVERSATION What do you find most challenging about being a Centre President?

That’s a great question. I suppose the obvious place to begin would be to mention that my two-year term as CHW Toronto President started against the background of significant shared societal experiences such as the global pandemic and a call for social justice.

These changes have fundamentally changed not only how we look at the world, but how we interact with each other.

How did you first get involved with CHW? I was invited to attend a CHW Toronto Chapter (Tamid) meeting many years ago by a close friend. That memory makes me smile today, because that friend is our current CHW National President, Elayna Latsky. She was one, among many, incredibly talented and passionate CHW supporters who inspired me that first evening.

Of course, I had heard about CHW, but did not fully understand our rich history, the broad scope of the projects and services we support and the magnitude of the impact we were making. I am not the type to sit back and watch for too long, so I became involved rather quickly in planning successful CHW Chapter events and later city-wide initiatives, all the while assuming progressive volunteer leadership opportunties. These fulfilling experiences have shaped the lasting passion and commitment I have for CHW today.

A significant part of my role as President of Canada’s largest Centre is to be an ambassador of our work, raising awareness of CHW’s incredibly relevant mandate and engaging with current and future supporters.

Although I have become somewhat of a “Zoomô aficionado”, the vital work of making sustained connections and motivating others to act is much more effective in face-to-face settings and I have not yet been able to do that.

What would you tell someone who was thinking about getting involved with their local Centre?

I would encourage them to “jump on board!”

There is no substitute for volunteering if you really want to make an impact, contribute to a good cause and truly capture the essence of what a charity if trying to accomplish. At its core, volunteerism is all about Tikkun Olam. It is important to note that not all charities offer the opportuntiy for volunteer stewardship. It may not be how they operate or how they are structured. CHW is not one of them!

From what I have seen, there has always been a valuing of the diverse range of skills, experiences and knowledge that volunteers bring.

Having said that you must ask yourself “What do I care about?” If making a difference, affecting meaningful change, enriching the lives of families in Israel and in your local community, is one of them, you may have found your match. I would also say “Call me, let’s talk”. I can be very persuasive. Sharing of your time, learning new things and meeting like-minded people can be truly rewarding and lots of fun if the right experience is found.

What initiatives are underway at CHW Toronto Centre?

Another great question! We never stop! When the CHW Toronto Executive was installed in September 2020, we wasted no time rolling up our sleeves and crafting new strategic goals for our administration. Not surprisingly, Toronto’s strategy, which closely aligns with CHW’s national strategy, is focused on growth. Growing fundraising events, growing annual campaign, growing partnerships, growing donor engagement and growing donor awareness.

An important goal also identified growing the next generation of CHW supporters. The Jewish community in Toronto is both strong and philanthropic; there is tremendous opportunity to expand in all of these areas.

CHW Toronto had a record-breaking End of Year (2020) campaign in December and we are focusing our energies now on preparing our amazing canvasser team for Annual Campaign 2021.

We hope to surpass our record-breaking 2020 annual campaign results. Alongside this work, CHW Toronto has hosted more than 17 successful virtual events since the first wave of stay-at-home orders. Additionally, we are preparing to launch a Task Force to conduct an industry analysis of fundraising events and trends in the Toronto Not-For-Profit environment.

What would someone be surprised to find out about CHW Toronto?

CHW Toronto has many active and vibrant Chapters. Some have been in existence for more than sixty years, other are comprised of millennials. That alone is not truly surprising given CHW’s over 100-year history in Canada, but it may surprise people to know that these same chapters quickly designed new opportunities for virtual engagement almost overnight. In fact, CHW Toronto has raised $269,000 in virtual event fundraising alone since the pandemic started.

We also broke a record for the number of participants at a CHW Toronto virtual event with 350 participants attending our very successful and fun Chanukah Party Bingo.

I am so proud of the CHW Toronto Executive, our many Chapters and volunteers, and of the enormous impact we are having as CHW continues the valued work of supporting Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel and Canada.

CHW LEGACY CIRCLE

Marla Dan,

National Legacy Circle Chair Marla Dan was one of the longest serving National Presidents of CHW in modern history, leading the organization from 2009-2014. Since the introduction of the CHW Legacy Circle, Marla and her husband Aubrey signed up to make this special commitment, as they had already included CHW in their will. “Aubrey and I look at all of our gifts to CHW as being investments in the organization. We believe in it.”

After visiting Israel for the first time in 1993, seeing all of CHW’s projects had a huge impact on the couple. Over the years, they have met many people who have been impacted by CHW projects, including those who received lifesaving treatment in a hospital, or attended a school that understood their needs and helped them reach their full potential. “I have been to Israel over 20 times, and people always ask me how I don’t get tired of seeing CHW’s projects. There is usually at least one person in the group I tour with that has not been there before. I always try to look at it through the eyes of that person seeing it for the first time.”

Over the years, CHW projects have seen countless changes, from wars, to advancements in technology, to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Marla says “The hospitals and schools are still running. Kids are still living in the youth villages. Life is continuing and the needs are still there, just in a different form. It’s a tough situation.”

Marla encourages anyone thinking of leaving a legacy gift to CHW to discuss their wishes with their family, so that their legacy can be carried on through CHW’s projects. “The biggest thing that I think is so important in all of this, like in any category of giving, is that whatever the gift is, that it is meaningful to you, and you feel that you have made an impact. Every gift that people give is a gift that keeps on giving.”

She knows that leaving a legacy gift to CHW will have a lasting impact on CHW’s projects far beyond her time on earth. “CHW has existed for over 100 years, and there’s no reason why we can’t exist for another 100 or more years. The CHW Legacy Circle enables people to leave an impactful gift that they would not be able to give in their lifetime. It ensures the sustainability of the organization. That is the true essence of the Legacy Circle.”

Noa’s Trendy Cookie Cakes The CHW Netanya Technological High School Patisserie Program always stirs up some delicious-looking treats. Check out this dessert from a first year student named Noa: Dough: 2 1/2 cups

Preparing the Dough: Flour

1/2 cup

Ground Almonds

1/2 cup

Powdered Sugar

200 grams

Cold Butter (Cubed)

2

Eggs

1 tsp

Vanilla Extract Pinch of Salt (Lemon or Orange Zest Optional)

Cream: 500 grams 500 ml 1/2 cup 1 tsp

Mascarpone cheese

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. In a food processor, mix cubed butter, flour, ground almonds, powdered sugar and pinch salt. (Optional lemon / orange zest) Process until crumbly.

Add eggs and vanilla extract, process until dough is formed.

Shape the dough into a ball and flatten into a disk. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 1 hour. Draw desired numbers, letters or shapes on parchment paper / construction paper & cut out Remove refrigerated dough Note: two layers of cookie are required for one cake Roll out the dough into a thin layer on parchment paper, then cut out 2 of the desired numbers/letters or shapes with a sharp knife. Transfer onto large baking sheet. Bake each cookie for 10 – 13 minutes until golden at the edges and cool completely.

Decorations: Fresh Fruit, Chocolates, Flowers, Candies, etc.

Preparing the Cream: In a large bowl beat mascarpone and powdered sugar until smooth. Add vanilla extract and heavy cream and beat to stiff peaks. Transfer cream to a piping bag.

Assembly: Pipe the mascarpone cream over the first cookie, then gently place the second cookie on top. Pipe the remaining cream and decorate as you like.

Store in the fridge until ready to serve.

National AGM via ZOOM On Sunday, October 25, 2020, CHW held the Annual General Meeting via Zoom. Over 120 CHW supporters and friends from across Canada registered to attend and hear about CHW’s achievements over the past two years. CHW CALGARY CHW Calgary Tikvah Chapter on their CHW Walk Our CHW Walk was held on August 26 and we walked along the Glenmore Reservoir. All enjoyed the walk in the sun, time to chat and raise funds in support of children in need.

Games Week Under the leadership of Linda Barron, members were encouraged to play a game with their cohort Covid circle during the week of October 12-16, 2020. Games such as scrabble, maj, bridge, and board games were played online or in-person. Lunches were arranged for pickup from our local Karen’s Café.

2020 has been unlike any other year in our history: the pandemic presented additional challenges in the collection of toys. The committee made up of Jeanie Groberman, Jackie Hamborger, Arliss Levine and Jennifer Moscovitz, was amazed at the wonderful support given to provide funds for the purchase of toys for the recipients of Jewish Family Services. Also, a donation was delivered to Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Keeping in Touch CHW Calgary Executive took on reaching out to our seniors and dedicated friends during the pandemic lockdown: at Rosh Hashanah gifts bags containing an apple and small jar of honey, at Chanukah CHW pouches containing a dreidel, a few candles and Chanukah gelt, and at Tu b’Shevat a handmade card with a small plant were delivered to homes. All three events included hand written cards. As well, we have a group connecting by phone on a regular basis.

CHW MONTREAL Rosh Hashanah Chocolates Despite various COVID challenges, CHW Montreal moved forward with their Rosh Hashanah Chocolate Project to the delight of their regular customers, selling and distributing 550 tins to friends and family all over the city. Over $25,000 was raised in support of CHW projects.

CHW MONTREAL CONTINUED CHW Art Auction Goes Digital CHW Montreal embraced a new online platform for its annual Art Auction. In October, the artwork was posted online and potential buyers had two weeks to peruse the items available and place a bid. There was spirited bidding as the countdown to the close of the auction came nearer. In all, over $20,000 was raised in support of CHW Projects. Many thanks to the many artists who donated their artwork and the participants who supported the event.

Discover Focaccia: Everything You ‘Knead’ To Know In November 2020, CHW Montreal hosted an online baking event with Jordyn Chaimberg, also known as The Breadfluencer. Everyone tuned in with their dough ready-to-go to learn how to dimple, season and bake their own focaccia. Jordyn also taught the group the technique behind creating a delicious cheese grazing board. In all, it was an informative and fun night on Zoom.

CHW MONTREAL CONTINUED Online Mahjong Events CHW Montreal has hosted two online Mahjong Events with much success. Over 100 Mahjong players tuned in with their teammates to an online Mahjong platform while their Team Captains were on Zoom with CHW. Lots of prizes were won and much fun was had by all. An evening event was hosted in December and a daytime event was held in February. There are plans for another evening event in the spring once the new 2021 Mahjong cards come out.

CHW Montreal in the News The Suburban, Quebec’s largest English-language weekly newspaper, recently aired a “Cohen in the City” segment on CHW Montreal’s programming efforts during the pandemic. CHW OTTAWA CHW Ottawa Spring Tea Each year, CHW Ottawa holds a spring tea in honour of a worthy Ottawa citizen. This year, because of the pandemic, we had to quickly change to a virtual format for our June 7 event.

Our honouree, Laurence Wall, CBC broadcaster and community volunteer, was pleased to lend his support to the Debbie Eisenberg and Gary Levene Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at The Shamir Medical Centre (Assaf Harofeh). We had a wonderful turnout on Zoom and the tea was a great success!

CHW OTTAWA CONTINUED Chanukah Craft Sale Every year, CHW Ottawa participates in the Chanukah Fair organized by the Jewish Community of Ottawa. In 2020, the Chanukah Fair became virtual. With the help of the National Office, CHW Ottawa created its own web page, hosted on the CHW site, which advertised our handmade Chanukah aprons, napkins, table runners, gelt bags and other items. CHW Toronto Gila Chapter Gila Gourmet Celebrity Chef Zoom Series 1 & 2 The wildly popular Gila Gourmet Celebrity Chef Zoom Series presented by CHW Toronto Gila Chapter launched on September 9, where registrants were treated to cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs over the course of several months. The chefs came from a diverse background of specialities and created scrumptious looking dishes from around the world. Each session was expertly moderated by celebrated broadcaster Liza Fromer. CHW TORONTO CONTINUED CHW Toronto Tamid Chapter Tour With Tamid - Global Night Out CHW Toronto Tamid Chapter presented the first exciting session of the Tour with Tamid Global Night Out series on November 1, 2020.

Over the course of 3 sessions, participants travelled the globe virtually on exclusive tours and lectures highlighting the beautiful cities of Budapest, Tokyo, and Florence. Travellers also received exclusive treats and souvenirs.

CHW Toronto Shoshana Chapter: “Re-Humanize” with Marlee Liss CHW Shoshana Chapter hosted a compelling speaker event featuring Marlee Liss, a sexual assault survivor who found justice outside the courtroom.

Marlee shared her story of how a conversation with her attacker helped her heal through a process of restorative justice as an alternative to Canada’s mainstream criminal justice system. A question and answer period followed.

CHW TORONTO CONTINUED CHW Toronto Chanukah Party Bingo in partnership with CHW Toronto Hatikvah and L’Netzach Chapters A record-breaking 340 CHW supporters joined Toronto Centre and CHW Toronto Hatikvah and L’Netzach Chapters to celebrate Chanukah and play Bingo. After five fun-filled competitive rounds of Bingo, many players won fabulous prizes and some lucky players also won door prizes. Virtual Opening Tea September 13th was our first major foray into unknown territory with the Hats Off To Lori Opening. Although it was not a luncheon and no one got together, it was a huge success.

We honoured Lori Barer stepping down as Centre President and even had her son present the award to her at home live on Zoom, much to her surprise. In addition the new Vancouver Executive Committee were inaugurated with speeches from our Co-Presidents Sasha Gerson and Stephanie Rusen.

We put together a video of 5 women: Sasha Gerson, Lottie Smith, Ruthi Akselrod-Pinto, Debbie Tabenkin, and Daniella Givon, from different countries talking about what Chanukah was like when they were young, followed by little ones telling us what they like about the festival now. We lit the candles led

by Daniella Givon; sang along with Deb Rootman and her daughter, Nava; then with Matthew Mintsis, a returning favourite; and did a hilarious How To Make A Latke chant with Debbie Lewin. Afterwards, we happily schmoozed with each other, glad to be together, and we raised more funds for Emergency COVID-19 Supplies.

Light Up the Night: Concert Series Our virtual concert series showcases internationally renowned performers with 5 concerts in total, one per month. Alla Reed, an amazing, multi-talented singer, kicked off the series in January with Toby Rubin as MC and music producer Margarita Kagan to introduce the artists. Alla was delighted to donate her time and voice, working with us beforehand to get the music just right. Thank you to everyone who joined us for her performance, and a special thanks to Alla! We look forward to seeing everyone again at the next concert on February 21, 2021, featuring Amazing Nutsa and the All Star Jazz Band!

CHW Welcomes Its New National Executive Director Lisa Colt-Kotler Dear Friends, On behalf of the CHW Board of Directors, I am very pleased to announce that after a thorough search process, Lisa Colt-Kotler is appointed CHW National Executive Director, replacing Alina Ianson, who is retiring from CHW after 22 years with our organization. Lisa will join CHW on March 1, 2021, and we are ensuring sufficient time for a smooth transition.

Lisa is a seasoned not-for-profit professional with 17 years of experience in senior management and executive roles. Most recently, she served as National Executive Director of the Canadian Shaare Zedek Hospital Foundation. Her experience in strategic direction, development, operational management, and relationship building with multiple stakeholders and staff, including those in Israel, make her a great fit for CHW’s next stages of growth.

We welcome Lisa on board, and are looking forward to working with her!
