THE LECTIONARY 2019 TO 2020 SUNDAY AND FESTIVAL READINGS Those listed for Sundays and Festivals are drawn from the Table of Readings in the Book of Common Prayer (the listings for a Third Service and from a Table of Epistles and Gospels are not included). Copyright approval has been given to reproduce these. In Ordinary Time, there are two options, either a semi-continuous reading [C] or a paired reading [P].

The readings for the Principal Service are printed in full in The Word of The Lord (Canterbury Press 2003).

The ‡ prefaced to Gospel readings in the Second Service listing is a provision to be used if that service is a celebration of Holy Communion.

WEEKDAY READINGS The text of the Holy Communion Readings [HC] has been published by Canterbury Press as Common Worship Daily Eucharistic Lectionary, © 2008 Simon Kershaw.

Morning Prayer Readings [MP] are from the two-year programme approved by the House of Bishops in 2004 and 2005 which covers almost the whole Bible in semi-continuous reading over the two years. In the alternate year the New Testament readings are mostly from the Gospels.

This year they are mostly from the rest of the New Testament. In this way the whole of the New Testament is read over two years. The greater part of the Old Testament is also covered over the two years. During seasons a selection of psalms appropriate to the season is arranged. In ordinary time, when combined, MP and NP psalms are for the most part read in course. The final cycle of the year omits some psalms well-used during the seasons.

Evening Prayer Readings [EP] are from the Revised Common Lectionary Daily Readings, © 2005 Consultation on Common Texts and is used with permission. Readings for Thursday, Friday and Saturday help to prepare for the coming Sunday; those for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday reflect upon it. Because of its link with the Sunday readings of the three year cycle, when only one office is celebrated this may be used where an irregular congregation might find the [MP] table less than helpful. Normally, the same Psalm is provided for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday preceding Sunday and another for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday following.

Night Prayer Readings [NP] consist of the Evening Psalm approved by the House of Bishops and the New Testament or Gospel reading provided by the Revised Common Lectionary Daily Readings. These readings may be used at Compline or A Late Evening Office. Where no provision is made for [NP] in this listing, the Book of Common Prayer provisions should be followed.
