2016–2017 ANNUAL REPORT

A SEAT at the TABLE

From THE HEAD of SCHOOL It is a delight to present this year’s Annual Report 2016-2017: A Seat at the Table and rejoice with you in the many accomplishments achieved over the course of the past school year. Most remarkable is the happy graduation of 45 seniors, our largest class ever, who are headed to wonderful and outstanding undergraduate programs. They are our reason for being, and all of us at Church Farm School are proud of what they are doing with their young lives. This is all thanks to your affection, prayers and generous support! Our theme harkens back to Biblical times and the continuing spiritual mandate our Creator enjoins us to pursue in supporting a common wealth and those neighbors, particularly their children, who may be struggling in some important and oftentimes unforeseen ways just to make ends meet. In assuring that valleys are smoothed and darkness is turned into light, your support and encouragement provide hope and meaningful educational opportunity—the kind that transforms young lives and those that they will touch when they, in their turn, build strong communities for the next generation. No one, of course, will simply hand another a seat of authority and responsibility—it has to be earned. The boys are doing their part by honing their skills in responsible living, spirited competition and entrepreneurial foresight.

It is amazing how a life can be so transformed and become more appropriately aimed to higher, loftier and morally sound ambitions with the right amount of support, instruction and encouragement. More engaged and part of the social fabric that drives our nation, these young people will earn their place thanks to your belief in them, their ability and most of all their noble character. That Church Farm School provides such an education and opportunity for so little cost to families is a testament to the goodness and love you are able to demonstrate through your prayers and financial commitment. Your gracious support makes this vision of a seat at the table a living and vibrant reality on the Church Farm School campus every day, and we remain dedicated to providing the highest quality and caliber of program possible. On the eve of our 100th year, I am thankful for your belief in our capacity to deliver this kind of meaningful and lasting result, and I look forward to our continuing partnership in the year ahead as we celebrate together this special service to God’s intent.

THE REVEREND EDMUND K. SHERRILL II

“ No one, of course, will simply hand another a seat of authority and responsibility—it has to be earned.”

From the CHAIRMAN of the BOARD It has been my honor to serve on the Board of Directors of the Church Farm School since 2002, and for the last seven years as its chairman. In May of 2018, I will reach my term limit as mandated by our by-laws and will step down as chairman and leave the board. I can think of many highlights from my time on the board. Among the most meaningful to me have been working with my wonderful fellow board members, and watching the school’s administration and faculty so passionately serving our mission. I have learned much from all these members of the Church Farm School community. I have been humbled by the dedication and generosity they display in educating young men of ability and promise whose circumstances would ordinarily keep them from receiving a college preparatory education in a boarding environment. But the most meaningful highlight has come each June, when I get to see the fresh, eager faces of our seniors as they are handed their diplomas and receive the blessing from our Head of School and Chaplain. Many of these young men feel as if they are leaving family. Their demeanor is serious and, occasionally, some look almost reluctant to leave. But whether they are excited, hesitant or anxious, they all know that they must move on. I like to think that we have done our best to prepare them for the next phase of their young lives. And by “we,” I mean not just the board, the faculty or the administration. I mean all of you as well—parents, alumni, friends and benefactors—who have sacrificed in your own ways to support the school. Those graduates could not move on to greater opportunities without the foundation that you have provided them. Thank you for your support! Although I will be leaving the board next May, my wife Joanne and I will continue to give back. In doing so, we follow your sterling example.

Episcopal Mission Schools Council Launches Church Farm School and St. James School, the two mission schools of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, have teamed up to promote these schools’ unique missions among the 155 diocesan congregations. Under the leadership of The Rev. Maxine Dornemann, Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Council members representing various churches gathered to inaugurate the new Episcopal Mission Schools Council on October 4 in the Chapel of the Atonement. The Rev. Edmund K. Sherrill, Head of Church Farm School, hosted the evening, and Mr. David Kasievich, Head of St. James School, and The Rev. Daniel R. Heischman, Executive Director, the National Association of Episcopal Schools, were special guests.

CFS Wins West Chester Chili Cook-Off The Rotary Club of West Chester’s 14th Annual Chili Cook-Off last October 9 began on a dreary note; it was dark, rainy and cold. What was worse, the assembled team—Sodexo General Manager Denise Oldt, Marketing and Communications Manager Stefanie Claypoole and students Nate Antwi ’18, Tim Thomas ’17 and Shane Carter ’17—could not open the door to the office with the van keys (pre-loaded with everything that was needed for the day). With some persistence (and yes, a bit of lock busting), the team made it to the Cook-Off in the nick of time, and by noon, when the Church Farm School Choir kicked off the day with the National Anthem, the sky was clear and the weather was perfect for chili sampling. Despite having 70 chilis to sample, many of the thousands of attendees returned to sample Church Farm School’s “Scrapple-licious Chili” a second, and even third, time. Whether it was the taste, the décor, the students’ charm or a combination, when the People’s Choice winner was announced at 3:30 p.m., Church Farm School emerged victorious, earning a plaque, a check for $1,000 and best of all, pride. Join us for our third foray into competitive chili-making on Sunday, October 8 at the 15th Annual West Chester Chili Cook-Off! 2 | CHURCH FARM SCHOOL

Students Visit Congressman John Lewis Students and administrators from Church Farm School visited Congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis (5th district, Georgia) on February 7. The Congressman and his wife, Lillian, served as mentors to Church Farm School’s first African-American graduate, Benjamin Hickman Wright, Jr. ’67, when he was a student at Morehouse College and active in civil rights. During the visit, Congressman Lewis shared his remembrances of Ben, whose life was cut short in December 1970, and talked to the group—which included Head of School The Reverend Edmund K. Sherrill, Assistant Head of School/Director of Academics Christopher Seeley, Director of College Guidance Tiffany Scott, Director of Development Peter Corrado, CFS board member Rev. Canon Preston Belfield Hannibal and seven students, three of whom hail from Atlanta—about his activism in the 1960s, in particular the march at Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Rev. Sherrill shared that his own father, Rev. Franklin G. Sherrill II, had marched that day alongside him.

diligently to promote the mission and interests of the school and generate financial support. The Leadership Council members are selected based on their ability to provide critical expertise and thinking to the school’s current and future work. Each year, the Council hosts events for members and their colleagues to learn more about the school from guest speakers. In the fall, a student panel shared its summer experiences at organizations such as Goldman Sachs, Google, MIT, the Global Citizenship Institute and the Junior Olympics. Former Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil spoke in the winter about how to be a successful leader. The culminating event was a panel of four members of the Class of 2017 who talked about the challenges and excitement of applying and being accepted to Brown University, the University of Miami, Villanova University and the University of Virginia.

CFS Partners with Devon Horse Show Church Farm School forged a partnership with the esteemed Devon Horse Show and Country Fair in the spring, with four students volunteering approximately eight hours each week for two months at the fairgrounds. The students—Kyle Fok, Dominic Jones, Alfredo Olaguez and Natnael Kahesay—provided administrative support, cleaned, painted and, on May 29, helped staff an informational booth at the Show and present awards during the evening. The event was further bolstered by the CFS Choir kicking off the Show’s “Tribute to Heroes” with a lovely rendition of the National Anthem, followed by a singalong of “God Bless America.”

Mohammed Emun ’17, Tufts University; Zozi Flores ’17, Brown University; Alejandro Zuleta ’17, Williams College

of ACCOMPLISHMENTS Seniors Push Toward Excellence A FEAST

Mohammed Emun is the boisterous one, full of energy and excitement and as candid as can be. Zozi Flores is more careful with his words, which are always thoughtful and focused. Alejandro Zuleta comes across as shy, but a playful smile always lurks close to the surface. They are three young men who just ended their journey at Church Farm School, heading to exemplary schools in New England for the next stage of their lives. Emun, from Lansdowne, PA, is attending Tufts University in Massachusetts, much to his mother’s disappointment. “She wishes I was going to be closer.” Zozi, from Brooklyn, NY, will remain relatively close to family, attending Brown University in Rhode Island. Alejandro is leaving West New York, NJ, to attend Williams College in western Massachusetts. Zozi ribs Alejandro about his hometown’s name, a remark which suggests a longtime joke among the good friends about the superiority of New York over New Jersey. Running jokes and an undercurrent of affection abound among these young men. Emun matriculated to Church Farm School as a seventh grader, two years ahead of Zozi and Alejandro. As is common 4 | CHURCH FARM SCHOOL

in small schools, their bond formed quickly when they all met their freshman year. Emun recalls that Zozi sat next to him in Spanish 1, and that he won the Excellence in Spanish Award that year. “It wasn’t fair. He’s a native speaker!” Emun laughs. During their junior year, Emun, Alejandro and Zozi all served as prefects in Catherwood Cottage, where they fondly recall late nights hanging out. The senior class is very tight-knit overall, says Emun. “We have our own cliques within our class, but when we come together as a group, we are all very close.” They are also the top-tier of their class academically; all three qualified for the prestigious QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program, which helps pair low-income students with the nation’s top colleges. Once selected as College Prep Scholars as juniors, the students have access to college visits and conferences, admissions guidance and more. All three young men applied for early decision (ED) through QuestBridge’s National College Match, which includes a full four-year scholarship to partner schools, many of them Ivy League. Zozi learned he matched with Brown on December 1.

“ We have our own cliques within our class, but when we come together as a group, we are all very close.”

Asked if wondering whether his classmates were matched tempered his enthusiasm, Zozi answers quietly and considerately, “We were all finding out on the same day. I didn’t want to broadcast it.” Emun and Alejandro immediately jump in to console him, as only best friends can do. “What helped me the most was finding out that Zozi did get it,” Emun says. Adds Alejandro, “If anyone gets it, it’s good for everyone. And we all got it. We just needed to wait a little longer.” Director of College Guidance Tiffany Scott often notes that very few Church Farm School seniors show interest in pursuing humanities majors in college, that there is an overriding concern for a career that will ensure financial security. The boys all acknowledge that taking care of themselves and their families has guided their ambitions. Zozi will study engineering at Brown. Emun is undecided, but says he wants to major in civil engineering, “so that I can help pay for all of the different financial needs for my parents.” Alejandro says that his entire life, he wanted to be both a doctor and an author. “Being a doctor is part of my own dream, but I also know it will really help out my family,” he says. The three are eager for their next steps, but nervous too. They know that their respective colleges will not be nearly as diverse as Church Farm School, and worry that the casual banter of brotherhood that they’ve perfected in high school might not translate as well to a college campus. “People are going to think I’m weird,” Zozi says. “There is so much freedom to be outspoken here.” Despite any trepidation, however, they know they will go through it together, as the bonds of brotherhood are stronger than any distance separating them. 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT | 5

JOHN BELLIS

An Example to Follow John Bellis, Jr. says he has been quietly giving to Church Farm School most of his adult life. “My father once said to me, if you ever want to do something good for people, help out Church Farm School.” Bellis took that advice seriously, and would donate whatever he could each year, even when his annual income was meager. His good fortune increased considerably when Schramm, Inc., where he served as Chief Financial Officer for 30 years, was sold in 2012 to a private equity firm. “Our revenue increased from $35 million to $140 million in seven years,” he recalls. As a result, he has not only expanded his financial generosity to the school, but also his engagement. Bellis joined its Board of Directors in May 2016. “I’m very happy to be associated with the school. It makes me feel good,” he says. Bellis’ own grandfather was an Episcopal priest in Philadelphia during the era when current Head of School Ned Sherrill’s grandfather, Henry Knox Sherrill, was the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Bellis had the opportunity to meet Ned about five or six years ago, and his interest in the school grew exponentially. It started with a student tour of Schramm, located in West Chester, as part of the school’s STEM initiatives. Bellis says Schramm started out as a small company manufacturing air compressors, and it eventually expanded into innovative oil and gas drilling machinery. Prior to Schramm, Bellis served in the Air Force and for 13 years as a Senior Vice President at Girard Bank, which was eventually acquired by Mellon Bank in 1983. In addition to Church Farm School, Bellis serves as a director of the Heifetz International Music Institute, a program involving “the most wonderful musicians in the world” at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia.

6 | CHURCH FARM SCHOOL

“I’ve been so impressed with Church Farm School even before I became a Director,” he says. “I’ve always found the students to be amazingly humble and thankful for their situation. Their love for the school helped me love the school.” He especially appreciates the work the school has done to serve minority groups with a student body of varying backgrounds and faiths while preserving its Episcopal identity. Bellis looks forward to working with the school and the Board to increase awareness of and support for the mission among the philanthropic and business community. “All of us as Directors need to focus on that, finding the influential people that can and want to help.”

JOHN SUGGS ’00

Extending His Seat to the Next Generation John Suggs ’00 was a third grader at Harrity Elementary School in West Philadelphia in 1990 when the principal told his class that they needed to bring their parents to a special assembly. John lived across the street from the school in an apartment with his single mother, who was struggling to get by and debating moving her family to Florida. When they arrived at the assembly, there were news crews gathered to cover a big announcement. Jane and Robert Toll of Toll Brothers shared with the students and their families that their Jane and Robert Toll Program of the Philadelphia Chapter had been formed [part of Say Yes to Education], and would offer those particular 57 third-graders a free ride to any college in the country if they graduated high school. “It was not only a miracle that they picked my school, but my class,” John recalls. “We took their offer as an amazing challenge, one that came at the absolute best time for me and my family.” Jane Toll was very hands-on with the students. “She knew I had potential and wanted to make sure that college was in my future,” John says. Toll researched and visited Church Farm School, then brought John and his mom for a tour with the late Rich Lunardi. He matriculated to the school as a 9th grader in 1996. John dove right into life at Church Farm School. “I was a part of everything … the Headmasters Advisory Council … the Conduct Review Board … the Christmas Pageant. That always got me in the Christmas spirit,” he says. A self-described non-athlete, John enjoyed managing the basketball team, studying English with Ray Greenblatt, being a part of the monthly “Teen Voices” live broadcast radio show and the annual Multicultural Dinner held in February, where faculty and parents worked to create special dishes from their various cultures. “We had Korean food, Soul

food, Spanish food … my grandfather made ribs. It’s a great remembrance to this day,” John says about a tradition that is still a student favorite. The diversity of the student body was impactful to John. “When you are from the inner city, you see things in a certain way. But when you’re around boys from Korea, Brooklyn, Atlanta … you stop seeing color. You just think, ‘that’s my brother.’ My introduction to diversity came from my days at Church Farm School, and has shaped me to be able to operate in the lane I am in now.” That “lane” is an impressive career in community outreach, particularly to underserved youth. After graduating with a communications and marketing degree from Eastern University [he also has an MBA from Webster University], John became involved with various Philadelphia philanthropic outreach groups: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club, and even the Philadelphia School District. Currently Executive Director of CF Charities in Philadelphia, John has hosted a variety of outreach efforts for families and students ranging from holiday drives to teen programs and anti-violence summits in Philadelphia, plus he has worked with youth groups in Ferguson, Missouri, and Madison, Wisconsin, with actor and activist Hill Harper’s Manifest Destiny Foundation. “I’m so proud of this work. It’s a real blessing to be able to give back,” John says.

Hill Harper will be part of the Centennial Speaker Series at Church Farm School. He will address the community about his work on October 13. RSVP at gocfs.net.

SUNGHO YOO ’17

A View of the World Sungho Yoo ’17 came to the United States from Korea as a 9th grader, leaving his family behind to pursue his studies. He was initially placed in a day school in Kansas. “Hollywood movies were the only window through which I had seen America when I lived in Korea. The portrayals were mostly wealthy white people. Even during my time in Kansas, I didn’t feel like I really had a feel for true American culture,” he recalls. That all changed when he transferred to Church Farm School in 10th grade. “The environment was so diverse! It was something that I never expected to exist in America. It opened up my perspective to a completely opposite view of that world.” Living within a diverse environment—ethnically, financially and otherwise—was important to Sungho. “Like Korea, America suffers through economic division. Church Farm School has helped me to develop my passion, which is to help resolve that division.” Sungho hopes to pursue that passion while studying at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). “I selected Johns Hopkins [over Rice University in Texas] because Baltimore has an underserved population and the school is very much involved in helping achieve economic equality there.” Sungho plans to study neuroscience, and says JHU offered the most federal grants for undergraduate

research. Being a train ride from his family, who moved to North Carolina from Korea the summer of his junior year at Church Farm School, was another deciding factor. Sungho was a stellar student at Church Farm School. While he says it took him a year to acclimate and come out of his shell, he embraced all of the opportunities the school offered to excel in class, on the athletic field and through clubs and extra-curricular activities. He says he really enjoyed AP Calculus and Physics with Mr. Matt Labrador, plus serving on the Student Council; the TEDx, DECA, Greystock News and Robotics clubs; and varsity golf, tennis and track teams. “At first I hated the idea of mandatory sports,” Sungho says. “But ultimately it made me stronger and more interested in sports than I ever was.” Through it all, Sungho says the school “helped me become more fluent in communicating with people of other backgrounds.” Boarding school has also prepared him well for being independent and living alone. “I’ve grown into a young adult here. The school has helped me get out of my comfort zone in a lot of ways.”

“ Like Korea, America suffers through economic division. Church Farm School has helped me to develop my passion, which is to help resolve that division.”

“ALL THAT JAZZ” GALA

An Evening to Remember Church Farm School friends, faculty, alumni, students and parents came together on May 12, 2017, for a jazzthemed evening of food, fun and fireworks at the beautiful Phoenixville Foundry. Guests enjoyed appetizers, dinner and dessert with a distinctly New Orleans flair, décor inspired by graphic designer and committee member George Rothacker, a live auction by the always amusing Bob Frame and beautiful music by three groups: BVTLive, the CFS Band and the main stage performer, the CFS Choir. Choir member Anthony Baldeosingh ’18 kicked off the program by welcoming the more than 200 guests gathered to watch the performance, which included a fun rendition of “Route 66” by the a cappella group the CFS Singers, and concluded with a rousing hybrid

of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “When the Saints Come Marching In.” The live auction featured six exciting donated offerings, netting nearly $15,000 for the school, plus the “Paddles-Up” for the Alumni Success Program raised an additional $25,000. Altogether, the event successfully garnered almost $200,000 toward the Church Farm School mission. Everyone at Church Farm School is so thankful to the many sponsors and patrons who contributed, as well as the hardworking Gala committee led by Bruce and Mary Wilson. Pictures and video from the event can be found at gocfs.net/gala. Church Farm School’s Centennial Gala is slated for May 4, 2018, and will be held for the second time amid the beauty of Longwood Gardens, where the fountains have been recently restored. Stay tuned for online registration at gocfs.net!

IN MEMORY of CFS DIRECTOR NORMAN STRATE Norman F. Strate, who joined the Board of Directors in 2012, died suddenly on May 23. According to Head of School Ned Sherrill, “Norman was a passionate advocate for our students, generously contributing his talents and resources. He and his friend Ruth Mitchell visited often and carried word of our mission to their friends and colleagues all over the country. We shall miss his infectious energy and optimism, as well as his warm personality.” A veteran of successful corporate turnarounds and IPO’s, Strate also volunteered with a myriad of nonprofits including the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, the Geis Foundation of the American Dental Association and the Board of Cushing Academy. He taught at the Lee Iaccoca Institute of Lehigh University, where he once sponsored a scholarship for a Church Farm School student to participate in the Institute’s summer Leadership Program. Strate graduated from Lehigh University and The University of Pennsylvania Law School. A member of Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia bars, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army. An accomplished fundraiser, Strate co-chaired the Kroc Committee of The Salvation Army (Massachusetts Division) for the rehabilitation of a stricken section of metropolitan Boston. He volunteered along with former Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice in the Classics for Kids program that provides stringed instruments and music education to inner-city school children.

CHURCH FARM SCHOOL ESTABLISHES THE JEAN and WILBUR HALL FACULTY CHAIR for the TEACHING of SCIENCE Chaplain John Daniels, David Ksiazek, Dr. Stephen Ksiazek, Susan Heilman, Dick Gherst and The Rev. Ned Sherrill gathered during Chapel on April 26 to announce the establishment of the school’s first endowed faculty chair, the Jean and Wilbur Hall Faculty Chair for the Teaching of Science. Jean and Wilbur Hall, formerly of Plymouth Meeting, PA, were longtime supporters of the school with a particular interest in the school’s science program. Ms. Jean Hall worked for SK&F for 22 years. Mr. Wilbur S. Hall was a research chemist for American Chemical Products for 29 years, responsible for 29 U.S. patents and 151 international patents. The couple retired to western Maine in 1984, and passed away respectively in 2016 and 2009. In her will, Jean left the couple’s estate of $1.6 million to Church Farm School. The school’s Board of Directors is honoring the Halls’ bequest by establishing and naming the Jean and Wilbur Hall Faculty Chair for the Teaching of Science. “This is a wonderful and important gift to Church Farm School and its commitment to science education through our newly formed STEAM program,” says Head of School, The Rev. Ned Sherrill. “Furthermore, it honors a wonderful history of science education at the school and, in particular, the devoted and inspirational work of the entire faculty. This bequest will help us continue our work providing underserved young men with a private, college preparatory education to which they would otherwise not have access.”

CARYL GREAVES-BOWEN P’95

A Chance to Succeed

Caryl Greaves-Bowen first met Bill Seymour ’78 [alumnus and former CFS Development Director] when she was working at a large hospital and he was working as a supply vendor. When she found her only son, Nigel, struggling and without motivation at a large Catholic high school in the Bronx following his stepfather’s passing, she shared her worries with Seymour. She recalls, “He said, ‘that sounds a lot like me at that age.’ So I asked, well, what did your mom do about it?” The answer was Church Farm School. After discussions with Nigel’s school counselor revealed that he’d benefit from a smaller school that could help him with his organizational skills, Seymour met Caryl and Nigel at CFS in Exton, PA, for a tour. “Church Farm School changed his life, and mine. For that, I will always be grateful.” Caryl said she found the cottage environment at the school very much like family. She also enjoyed that every student was required to play a sport. “He didn’t have to be a star to participate like you would at a big high school.” Like her son, Caryl enjoyed the diversity among the students and faculty that wasn’t only racial, but geographic and ethnic too. “Being an immigrant myself [Caryl came to New York from Dominica as a teenager], it’s always important to get a different view of the world.” Nigel says he particularly enjoyed studying English with Mr. Ray Greenblatt. “I remember in Mr. Greenblatt’s poetry course, we were studying the comparisons between Shakespeare and Langston Hughes. Learning about those revered figures had a big impact on me,” he says. It even inspired him to join the school newspaper. “It was incredible to put things into practice that I was learning in class: writing, editing and storyboarding.” To this day, Nigel—who lives in Springfield, MA, with his wife and baby daughter where he works as the senior manager, office of housing, for the city’s Healthy Homes Program—still participates in spoken word poetry.

Nigel Greaves ’95

“ Some people think if you send your child to a boarding school, you lose your child. I think I got mine back.”

Caryl with Nigel Caryl Greaves-Bowen P’95

Even though Nigel graduated in 1995, Caryl continues to recommend young men to the school, and give back financially. “You can see where your money goes with Church Farm School. Some people think if you send your child to a boarding school, you lose your child. I think I got mine back.” 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT | 23

CAPT. PAUL SPEAR ’81

A Legacy to Inspire

Captain Paul Spear has some great stories about his time at Church Farm School—stories that he and his classmates like to recount when they reunite every five years, such as the time they broke a window in the library during Study Hall and replaced it with a pane from the barn before any of the adults found out. It’s perhaps ironic that someone who was a little too well-known for rule-breaking as a high school student now leads a submarine vulnerability program for the Navy at the Pentagon. “I thought [second headmaster] Charlie’s natural pigmentation was red. I guess it was just when he was around me,” Paul jokes. Thankfully, he was bright, especially in math and science, which kept him in the school’s good graces and on the honor roll. Paul, who is up for retirement next year after a 36-year naval career that includes stints on the USS Boise and USS Tucson, says he has made plans for Church Farm School in his will because, “the organization is balanced, fiscally responsible and pushing to give the kids as much as they can. It’s hard to find organizations where you are sure they will use that investment wisely.”

and barley,” he recalls. What was the same, but even more pronounced, was the variety of backgrounds on campus. “I grew up in a mixed community – racial, ethnic and even religious. CFS was a real-life, intimate example of how society should function. You don’t see differences. If you are fighting with someone, it’s because they insulted you, not because of their background.” Paul says that CFS is a place where bonds are formed, and individuals learn about who they are, and who they want to be.

Paul ended up at Church Farm School halfway through his 8th grade school year. His father had passed away when he was just 10 years old, and his mother, who is blind and deaf, began to find his behavior hard to handle. An Episcopal minister recommended Church Farm School. Coming from Upper Darby to Exton had its similarities, and its differences. “The biggest difference was the farm. It didn’t seem normal to spend your days working with pigs, corn

Currently living in Alexandria with his wife, with whom he has a blended family and four grandchildren, Paul says he is pleased to give back to Church Farm School. “You can give your assets to your family or to an organization that is going to do something good with it. It is obvious that Church Farm School is giving its students a strong foundation. It’s why I donate annually and why I’ll donate in my last act.”

When he graduated in 1981, Paul was unsure of his next steps. He worked for a bit before he decided to go into the military. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy for six years, eventually rising to his current rank of Captain. Along the way, he received a degree from Auburn University. “One of the things I discovered early on, that CFS taught me, was the benefits of a routine and a value system. I learned how to use the system in a valuable way, and it taught me some boundaries. When you combine boundaries and routine, I found the rigors of the Navy and academia to be pretty straightforward.”
