It is refreshing to be in touch with the Crossings community once again.There is so much to say in this column in light of conditions we all are facing. I know each of you has a story about the challenges you have faced over the last half year. We must hold each other in prayer.

The major hitch in this plan was the “congregate living” conditions (i.e., shared bathrooms) in our Parsons Hall dormitory. Unable to open Parsons or Gibbs this fall, we assigned students to apartments (Nichols) and single rooms in our retreat center (Easton).We are filled to capacity.

Let’s start with the obvious: the challenges of establishing school life under pandemic. Reopening this fall required new ways of functioning day to day at CDSP. Adding to the complexity were our deepening alertness to political polarization, racist social structures, mounting economic stress, and dramatic new symptoms of climate change.

Some faculty are teaching from their classrooms to make use of new equipment introduced this summer to support both online and in-person learning. In recent years, we have become a leader among Episcopal seminaries in the art of online pedagogy. We are now drawing on our strengths in this area still further.

These conditions impress upon us the importance of the vocation of spiritual leadership in a time of trial. I am grateful for how this community has accepted the challenge, adapted to circumstances beyond our control, and found avenues for mutual support.

As we continue setting priorities for CDSP’s growth and development, we remain committed to building a culture of adaptation.We trust God to transform us, as individuals and as a Church.

Against this challenging backdrop, we have enjoyed a major blessing. For the first time, ordination-track seminarians studying with the support of a bishop entered or returned to CDSP with full tuition scholarships, no-cost housing, and supplements to their cost of food.The Board of Trustees, under the new Trinity-CDSP partnership, wants to support a radical reduction of the debt students face when they graduate.This long-awaited dream has finally come true, and I have heard stories of relief and deep gratitude from those who benefit.Thanks be to God. In this column I will name the practical steps we have taken to make this school year happen, then close with a word about envisioning CDSP's future.

New students who had been admitted before and during the onset of the pandemic, as well as continuing residential students, held firm in their desire to start the school year in Berkeley this fall.They arrived earlier than usual to meet health and safety protocols, including mandatory testing and quarantining to assure we started with a healthy community.

We have plans in place in the case of illness.

These students for the most part are living on campus and forming cohort groups as usual. However, we are holding both classes and corporate worship in online-only formats and will continue in this mode during January Intersession and at least the start of Spring Semester. We keep our eyes on the local health conditions, ready for more flexibility when conditions permit.

Similarly, we remain committed to a program centered on mission, evangelism, and discipleship, preparing leaders who will support communities in spiritual growth and share Good News in their neighborhoods and other community contexts.

We are pursuing the expansion of degree programs to prepare both lay and ordained leaders for ministries within and beyond congregational life.We are deepening our expertise in teaching practical skills for ministry: executive leadership, change management, administration and finance, along with the classical theological disciplines at the core of who we are.

We will also continue to develop online pedagogies and programs to match ever-changing educational technologies and to meet the exciting and growing need for low-residential and bi-vocational education.

I began by mentioning the political climate of our day. If anything should break up the "ivory tower” model of the academy, it is our fraying civic life and injustice on the rise.

We must engage, and do so prayerfully, intelligently, and in coalition and solidarity with the people our systems ignore or abuse.

I believe the current political environment provides an extraordinary context for the application of spiritual and moral discourse—walking the talk, with Jesus as our exemplar. The time is ripe for testing our own fiber, and for awakening and strengthening the community of God's faithful.

Amid CDSP’s ongoing discernment about our role in the future of leadership formation in the Episcopal Church and beyond, we decided Crossings should feature wisdom from leaders we admire. The participants in this package of interview excerpts all play an important role in developing lay and ordained ministers in a wide range of contexts. They include a dozen bishops from around the U.S. and two CDSP alums serving as denominational staff.

We asked all of them the same series of questions, three of which are featured here.

Part research project, part podcast interview series, these conversations were too good to limit to a few highlights.

Then, of course, the coronavirus came, and a cry from sisters and brothers and siblings for racial reckoning.As we speak, we're just weeks away from the next presidential election.There has been tremendous change.When I think about leadership and leadership formation, I can't help but think about those things.What I'm experiencing is having to really bone up on and emphasize the gifts of compassion, and the gifts of understanding and listening.

Understanding the pressures of the current moment, understanding that lay and clergy leaders alike are learning—for some of them, at a pace they've never known.

Q: How has your thinking about leadership formation changed?

The Rt. Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows ‘97, Bishop of Indianapolis:When I became bishop, I encountered individuals who wanted to discern ministry but had not had the experience of actually exploring what that might be like. I thought, "Well, what is it like to walk with another person in their Christian journey through a Christian formation class?

What is it like to preach a five-minute homily at an evening prayer service?"

That's a lot of institutional trying things on, but I think alongside it are important factors like watching someone explore their faith and watching how they might gather a community when they're doing other things outside of the institutional church.

The Rev. Isaiah "Shaneequa" Brokenleg ‘18, Episcopal Church Staff Officer for Racial Reconciliation: I think now we're seeing leadership as more facilitation or organizing.

I liken it to being a midwife.You're there to help give birth to whatever's happening, and you're not there to control it because that's not your role.

Leadership also looks different in different cultures. In college, when they were hiring for the office of residential life, they would always look at “how people were being leaders.” I would say,“You don't see that the Asian folks are leaders too.They're just leading by example rather than trying to control the situation all the time.”

mass in Spanish. It's about really understanding culturally where people are and being able to bridge and build within that context.You can have multiple cultures within one congregation, but you've got to be able to bridge and be able to translate not necessarily from one language to another, but from one way of understanding to another.

The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington: We've taken an approach to selecting candidates for leadership that is much more function-oriented. Personal maturity and self-awareness are among the top of our list. Also the ability to think in an entrepreneurial way.What I mean by that is simply seeing opportunities where there are problems.Things like that you can on some level measure.

One thing that I learned from the Diocese of Texas is that unless a person is coming into the ordination process under 30, I'm also looking for a track record. I'm looking for experiences that would demonstrate what the person is feeling called to.

The Rt. Rev. Mary Gray-Reeves, Managing Director of the College for Bishops:We're a Church that loves its order and our General Convention.

We often overdo the formality of that process. As a bishop in Silicon Valley, I was always trying to encourage people, “Just go try it. Let's stay in conversation.

Let's not worry about the mistakes.

Let's worry about what we're learning.”

The critical reality before us is that we are proclaiming Good News in a world that, increasingly, does not speak religious language.The conversation cannot be,“Let me convince you that what I believe is right and that you want to believe it too,” but rather a conversation and dialogue.

lots of creative and innovative ways of participating in other communities during the time of formation for ordained leadership. I think that's got lots of potential going forward, working in ministry in the community that may be radically different from what the church has done, at least in recent memory. I think that's just incredibly important. If we don't continue to evolve, we die.

The Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson, Bishop of Missouri: When we look at our spiritual ancestors, when we look at Jesus, he sent the disciples out in twos.

One of the things that we're beginning

to experiment with in the diocese of Missouri is a regional model.The deacon, the priest, and the lay folks work in conjunction, looking at the area, rather than just this specific congregation.

We're in the early stages of planning and figuring out what that looks like, but there's lots of excitement looking at that new model. It stops the clergy person from feeling like you have to produce, that if your congregation isn't growing, you're not doing something important. A team can look at a situation, look at a congregation, look at the ministry area and say,“Where can our resources, time, and energy be focused in ministry?”

The Rt. Rev. Carlye Hughes, Bishop of Newark:What is most helpful is when people enter with a posture of being willing to learn and willing to try things, and what is not helpful is when people enter into ordained ministry thinking that they have to know all of the answers.The current environment is so topsy turvy and changing so quickly. Every week gets challenging in ways that we weren't expecting.We really are figuring it out as we go. I can remember someone saying to me in a parish,“What do you mean, figure it out?”

I said,“Once we have more information, we'll start making decisions.” They said,“You can't run a business like that.”

I said,“No, no, no, everybody's running a business like that.”

That was five years ago.

The Rt. Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori ‘94, 26th Presiding Bishop: I think we see a much greater interest in distance leadership formation linked with residential formation. I think it provides an opportunity for people to continue to be formed within their sending communities, not to be decultured in some sense, so they retain that contextual significance.We're also seeing

The Rev. Shannon Kelly ‘99, Episcopal Church Director of Faith Formation and Officer for Young Adult and Campus Ministries: In the position I'm working in now, leadership development is about mentorship. So much of formation is what we've learned when we're doing. For instance, if we're thinking about liturgy and what that might look like for an upcoming event, I don't just say,“Okay, let's plan evening prayer.” There's always some teaching within that.This experience-based leadership formation doesn’t get a lot of credit, but it ends up being where a lot of people’s education started. Experience is a big foundation for discipleship.

The Rt. Rev. Jennifer Reddall, Bishop of Arizona: One thing that has come back to me is thinking about how we form clergy to be self-reflective, like how Jesus goes away to a mountaintop to pray.We need to go away and reflect on our interactions in our ministry and honestly think about things done and left undone. I wonder how else we could teach that in a seminary context?

I don't in any way want to denigrate the knowledge and training that clergy bring, but I also think part of that gift of humility is the ability to take that deep breath and ask,“Okay, what would I have to change for us to move forward?” not just “What does the system need to change or what does the other person need to change?”

The Rt. Rev. Gretchen Rehberg, Bishop of Spokane:We've inherited a model where the priest is viewed as the one who does everything, and that model can't survive.We need to see it as a partnership, and we're not providing equivalent lay leadership formation.

The other thing I would emphasize is the importance of clergy seeing themselves as members of a diocese, not members of the congregation, because our clergy colleagues are in the diocese.

The support that we get is not just limited to our own town. I had a priest who's been here a couple of years now who said that joining the diocese saved his priesthood because of the clergy support system he found here.

The Rt. Rev. Susan Brown Snook ‘03, Bishop of San Diego: Ordained leadership is not anymore about waiting in your study and crafting a lovely sermon. Sermons are important, but it really is about connecting with the community.There is eternal truth that is applicable everywhere, but the Good News has a different focus or different concentration in different communities.

People need to understand what that Good News is for them and for their neighborhoods.They need to learn how to proclaim it. Not all of us are gifted one-on-one evangelists but all of us should be able to lead a community that proclaims the Good News, that gets out into the neighborhood, that responds to the needs that we see there.

The Rt. Rev. Megan Traquair, Bishop of Northern California:The believer side really has to come first: having a personal relationship with a living God. Nothing else is sufficient for this work or for faithful living in the world. There are simply too many impediments, too many disappointments, too many small hurts that come on the way. One resource on the leadership side that I am bringing is a course in nonprofit management, a certificate process from Arizona State University.We are taking the most up-to-date solutions that other nonprofits are finding. It's best learned once you are in the trenches. It is theoretical until that point.

There are people on the streets demonstrating.” He said he feels both prepared for this moment and yet nothing could prepare him for it except the foundational pieces that are the real formative work of what does it mean to follow Jesus and to be nimble about that.

He worked full-time while he went to seminary. He had to juggle a lot of things as he raised his family. There's something about the complexity of moving through seminary formation in that way, which makes him able to step into the current moment. Anyone who's done it knows it's really difficult and you don't have the luxuries that sometimes you might have as a residential seminary studen. But he does know how to be nimble, and to think quick, and to build relationships across difference, and to juggle very often competing allegiances in terms of parish and community ministry. I'm finding more stories like that to be ones that give me hope, because the reality is ordaining people to sit in church offices all day, that's just not what we're up for.

Brokenleg: A lay leader who's from the cathedral here in Sioux Falls said,“This summer has been the longest darn Lent that I've ever had. I just wish we had some kind of Pride thing.” That's what she wanted to do. She took the lead and started organizing people and calling people and we put together this Episco-Pride that happened across the country.

It included lots of folks of color and held up Black Lives Matter. She just took the lead and it was this amazing thing that happened. All these different folks came into play. I'm seeing some wonderful collaborations that don't normally take place. I think in the past, clergy tended to be really competitive with each other. I think now folks are so much more able to ask for help, are able to work together. They don't see it as a sign of weakness.That's a much more Jesus-centered model.

Q:What stories have you heard from new leaders that make you hopeful for the future of the church?

Baskerville-Burrows: I had a meeting with a fairly newly ordained priest. He's been a priest less than three years and a recent graduate from a seminary. He's finding himself in a job that places him both in a very large and active parish and also starting a new ministry in the community.We talked about how it’s going. He said,“The world has changed with the pandemic.We're finally able to

The newly ordained perhaps feel a bit nervous speaking out, but they are.

That gives me hope as we name our faith and the radical presence of Jesus as having an appropriate and Godly place in the town square that's full of protest. It isn't easy when people want church to be away from all of that, a quiet place where they can go and calm down. It's a very challenging task for local clergy: How do we develop our spirituality and increase the depth of the peace that passes all understanding while continuing to work for that peace in the wider community? That is the balance between discipleship internally and apostleship in the world that all of us have to sort out as followers of Jesus.

Kelly: There's a young woman who just graduated from seminary. I've known her for years. I remember having a conversation with her at one point.

She said,“My worry is, if I discerned to be an ordained minister that I'm going to have to choose between being an English speaker, an Anglo priest, or Spanish speaking—and that those are two very siloed places.” But she has just graduated and is in a setting where she's using both her English and Spanish. She's found this great match that just lets her be who she is.

The other little tiny snippet that I'll share is another young leader who's on the way to being a lay professional.

With the amount of wisdom that person brings into a room, he is always met by clergy saying to him,“When are you going to be ordained? You're such a good preacher.When are you going to take this seriously?” His ability to stand up and say,“That's not what I'm called to be,” I think is a phenomenal witness.

Of course, Ken jumps on the stage, when invited, and belts out something.

I think it was on the rock ‘n’ roll side of things. It might have involved air guitar.

His introduction to that community was, in fact, in exactly the language they were using. It was a fabulous beginning.You have to realize that this is a man who also loves to wear a biretta and is devout in his worship of our Lord Jesus Christ. He speaks both current culture and the deep faith of the church and he can meld them together beautifully.

That's my hope of where the church is going.We don't make leaders fit into the holes we think we have.We invite leaders into ministry, and see where that takes us.

Traquair: One story I'll tell you is the way one priest introduced himself into a community. Ken Katona came to pastor a small church in central Arizona.

As he arrived, he wanted to get to know his neighborhood. I think within his first week, possibly the first day, he drove in and wanted to just walk down the street and get to know his neighborhood.Well, he discovered that they were having a festival and there were all sorts of folks there. He's walking around in true Ken fashion

Q: If you could commission or team-teach a course with ANY instructor, who would you invite to teach?

Reddall: In my fantasy world, I would love to team-teach a course with Tina Fey, who is a Lutheran and lives in New York City. I would team-teach a course with Tina Fey called And Sarah Laughed: Holding onto Humor as a Woman in the Church.When I moved from being an associate rector to being a priest in charge of a congregation, it was right when Bossypants came out, which was Fey’s book describing her experience of being a woman and a leader in comedy, a very male-dominated field not necessarily open to change.

I found it really helpful as I moved into a new leadership role. I think hanging onto laughter is so important, whether it's the laughter of Sarah—“God, you couldn't possibly be calling me to this”—or whether it's the laughter of waiting with the wardens for the

I've watched them in all kinds of strange settings and working with all sorts of other groups. I think we have this tendency to think that that's a gift: natural-born leaders are natural-born team builders, and some people just have high emotional intelligence and can work with the room and get people to do things. I'm not so certain of that.

called Facing Your Demons. St.Anthony went into the desert. His story is all about being confronted by demons and what it took for him to go through that and then come out having vanquished the demons. Every person, but especially anybody going into ministry, is going to have demons: the things that challenge you, that tempt you, that confront you, that you will have to face and vanquish.

eternal optimist. I'm not naive, but I'm one of those crazy people who believe that the best years of the Church is ahead of us.We spend way too much time looking back and pining about what has been, instead of dreaming big about what can be. For me, Church is supposed to be the place where you come to find that that Good News. If on Sunday morning you can't proclaim it like Good News, stay home.

We can only do that if we look at how St.Anthony did it. He did it only by the power of God. One of the things I know more and more and more to be true is that I cannot do this work myself. So the course would invite people to think about their own personal stories, but also to really reflect on things happening in congregations and in our society. How do we face that? How do we acknowledge, name them as what they are, and vanquish them through the power of God?

Faith + Finance Alum adds gospel values, congregational perspectives to the money and meaning events calendar By

The emphasis on the connection between economic investment and social justice (in this case, educational opportunity) was typical of a Hardenproduced event. And like the presence of star athletes, this emphasis was somewhat atypical for a theologically oriented continuing education offering.

Harden hopes Faith+Finance can help change this latter status quo—and many others.

“The Church has a history of making businesses change because of its moral voice. I want to awaken that voice in the 21st century, so people will start asking questions about horrific business practices and start seeing that it's their own responsibility as Christians to shop differently, to think differently, to behave differently,” Harden said.

“We've lost that voice and we've got to get it back.”

Harden connected with the U.S. Naval Academy grad and 1995 NBA MVP through mutual colleagues in impact investing, a social-good-oriented movement in which she and her husband, Kevin Jones, have played a unique role.

Harden’s relationship with Robinson and his son, David Robinson Jr., is especially important to her most recent venture, Faith+Finance. Before the pandemic, the event series and 12 | Church Divinity School of the Pacific

“I was motivated to get into the education space because of the disparities,” Robinson told webinar moderator David Bailey. “In the case of San Antonio, [leaders] said,‘Let's build a highway to separate north and south, east and west, and let’s make sure commerce doesn’t go across that highway.” He went on to point out that the college attendance rate on either side of the city’s economic divide differs by 67 percentage points.

Full disclosure:The other reason this star-studded webinar felt familiar to me was that it was a remix of potential programming we had discussed during the short time Harden was my client.

Last winter, just before I came to work for her alma mater, I served as co-producer and communications lead for Harden’s new venture.

“Rosa Lee’s work stands on its own,” said the Very Rev.W. Mark Richardson, president and dean, when I noted the potential conflict of interest in my pitch for this story.“We ought to highlight her creativity for the CDSP community.”

to where all the other dealerships are—where people go to make their car-buying decision.

“We discovered that, oh my gosh, businesses are marketing other people's stuff to get attention to their own websites,” Harden said.

They weren't just selling underwear, in other words.They were creating markets. Jones began writing a standalone newsletter about this and related online trends.

“As far as we know, we were the first people to use the term B2B [business to business] e-commerce,” Harden said.

By Harden's third year at CDSP, she and Jones had launched Net Market Makers, adding an event series to Jones's newsletter work. By the time she started in the MA program a year later, it was a well-established business with a third partner working full-time.That partner was the Rev. Dr. Jay Johnson (GTU '98), who was just finishing his PhD in philosophical theology.

“We were doing international events in London and Boston and all over.

We had literally thousands of people attend,” Harden recalled.

This profile is based on an interview I conducted with Harden in June and another I produced last December when she was just beginning to spread the word about Faith+Finance.

An unconventional seminary side-job Harden came to CDSP as a student in the midst of years of serial entrepreneurship in partnership with Jones, including as publishers of the Mississippi Business Journal.

“After my first year at CDSP, Kevin was doing pretty traditional journalism about the Internet for Interactive Week, and he started noticing this thing about businesses that were sprouting up online,” Harden recounted.

“I was doing Clinical Pastoral Education in Concord.We had a membership at the YMCA because it's hot over there.

He and I were water-walking in an outdoor swimming pool, and he told me about having stumbled on a site, hanes.com, the underwear people.You could buy Hanes and Acme and Baker, all of the different t-shirts. He said, ‘This is just weird.Why is Hanes advertising on their site how you buy competitors' stuff?’”

Over the next few weeks, they figured it out. Online retailers were taking a lesson from businesses like car dealerships.When a new dealership opens, they don't set up across town from their competitors.They go right

On Monday, we were signing the paperwork in a suite at the Plaza in New York, where we had just paid $75 for a hamburger. And then on Thursday, I was in Jackson, Mississippi, being ordained.”

In more ways than one, it was time to move on.

Many returns on social capital Harden would go on to serve as rector of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in San Francisco for ten years and for some of that time to serve as creative director and executive producer for Every Voice Network.

Harden formed the latter nonprofit to produce and sell Via Media, a “video enhanced curriculum designed to proclaim the Good News of God in Christ Jesus and to present the Episcopal Church in a contemporary context.”

Harden says that over the years, as the ideas they helped define went mainstream, the center of gravity within the network shifted away from the ethical why that had been so present in the early years toward the more pragmatic how. Many investors were attracted to this idea of “doing well by doing good” but didn’t necessarily come for the conversations about justice and equity.

“We have a real crisis about who owns what, and who has what, and how does the world work,” she said.What’s more, she was beginning to long for a more theological conversation about these problems.

Here again we see the theme in Harden's work of convening around ideas.The series featured recorded conversations between lay people and clergy about the beliefs and practices of “an Anglican way of being Christian.”

These videos were intended to spark further conversations in local settings.

Thirty-two congregations around the U.S. piloted the curriculum, which went on to be used by more than a thousand churches.The experience obviously stuck with Harden, who in the time when I worked for her would frequently begin stories with “When we were shooting Via Media ...”

Still, people who know of Harden but don't know her personally are most likely to identify her as the co-founder and executive producer of another Harden-Jones collaboration: Social Capital Markets (SOCAP).

In 2008, the pair launched the event “at the intersection of money and meaning.” It would go on to grow fivefold in the decade they ran it—and to help define now-commonplace ideas like social entrepreneurship (the launching of businesses aimed at promoting social good) and impact investing (the funding of these ventures both to contribute to that good and to earn a respectable financial return).

“I was always frustrated in that very secular event that we couldn't talk about faith more explicitly,” Harden said.

“Because I am a person of faith, a pastor, a priest, I wanted to be able to have those conversations in a way that was a lot more churchy than SOCAP was built to accommodate. In 2019, when I attended a one-time church event that was similar in nature, it finally felt like it was time to really bring together people of faith who are thinking in a new way about money and faith and property and investments and innovation, all of those things.”

From Neighborhood Economics to Faith+Finance Still, Harden had reason to think that putting “the money people” and “the faith people” in the same room together could work.

Hebrew Bible scholar Walter Brueggemann was a significant conversation partner in Neighborhood Economics.Watching the recording of his presentation at the event in Cincinnati, Ohio (bit.ly/brueggemann-ne), I must say that it sounds as if all involved were catching the preacher’s spirit as he shared the groundwork for a scriptural take on economic justice.

Harden emphasized that the church people in the room needed to hear this talk as much as the SOCAP people did: “I talk to preachers a lot and ask,‘How often do you preach about money other than during stewardship time?’

They say they never preach about it.

They don't know what to say, and they don't feel like they, as individuals, manage their own money very well.”

She went on to tell a story that clarifies how faith leaders' need for formation about money in ministry doesn’t end with financial skills.

“I was at a gathering and a friend of mine made a comment, tongue-incheek, that God was having her go through a lot of hard things because God had prepared her to go through hard things,” Harden recounted.

“Somebody in the room started laughing and pointing at her saying, ‘That's bad theology, bad theology.’”

“Then, later in that same day, another person in the room was talking about how churches might invest in for-profit social enterprise that worked in line with the churches' objectives, which is happening in some places. Somebody asked,‘How are we going to get our money back if we make this investment?’ The answer was,‘Well, we're just going to charge him a whole lot of interest.’ It struck me that nobody in the room made that same joke: ‘bad theology, bad theology.’ That's because we don't have a theology of money.”

While the dark clouds loom over the horizon, I see the pewter skies of Baguio after heavy rainfall in my mind's eye. I read about the wildfires raging in Northern California, but the scent reminds me of the thick billow of smoke traveling through the pine trees along Loakan Road or the burning shanties in Damayang Lagi. My flesh reminds me of my mother's sinewy hands and fingers.

Uprooting one's life and moving to a new city can be difficult and alienating enough in good times, but it is all the more so in the days of Covid.The pandemic hangs over everything much like the haze of fog and smoke that hung over the city recently.

It is as though living in the time of COVID-19 stretches my body like a tent across the Pacific, gathering stories of isolation, neglect, anger, and also hope.

My memories are marked by God incarnate in every moment.

I am here but there.And yet, somehow, I live.

It hangs heavy in the spaces between us, obstructs our voices, our seeing of one another, our being with one another. It puts a damper on the spirit, on the tongues of fire that often manifest when two or more gather together.

But the solitude and silence of this time also offers a chance to reflect, to contemplate and look to things beyond as well as those among us. I can use the opportunity to commune with God until the day we can commune with one another unobstructed again, until the day we can share a simple meal.

I pray that it comes soon.

Amy Newell-Large '22 Talking about grace during the pandemic can be difficult. It can sound like sugar-coating what’s really crap.

Still, the opportunity to become a residential student would not have arisen for me without the pandemic’s circumstances. Moving to Berkeley was an opportunity full of gratitude and excitement, yet simultaneously grief and tenderness. Uncertainty about employment and conscious discussions of new realities revealed the possibility of deep personal change.

The support from my communities made it possible to step into that change. I received outpourings of love from all areas of my life, which helped me acknowledge experiences of grief, exhaustion, and uncertainty but also my resiliency in the struggle.That love has made present for me the Light that shines in the darkness— God’s light in Spencer Hatcher listening to concerns about moving with our tripawd dog. God’s light in Tyler, our best friend, now renting our house.

There is so much to be anxious and in pain about.What else can we do but take refuge in God? God sees all the anxiety and pain in us, and holds it with such tenderness, teaching us to do the same.

Theology has been my lifelong love, but career and family responsibilities kept me from fully diving in. I’ve worked at the margins of the church for years, but my weekdays have been spent on my New York City advertising job while my child has gone to middle school and my spouse has been finishing her college degree.

Holding “all that is, as it is” in this compassionate presence is a refuge.

It frees our feelings to flow through us, rather than clinging inside and growing heavier.

We make more spaciousness in which to see what is always present: God’s tender mercy and God’s creative life-force.They bring a way where there seems to be no way, creating something out of nothing and inviting us to new life.

In two weeks, my aloe plant grew an 18-inch stalk that actually blossomed.

Who knew that was possible?

One day, meditating near it, I was surprised to sense the surging life energy boldly pushing each of its cells upward into this unexpected new life.

I felt it first as a warm, calming vibration in my heart, later as energy rising in

Lord, help me to remember to lay my worries at your feet each day.Teach me the ways of your tender mercy. May I be empty enough to notice and brave enough to follow your invitation.Teach me to always do the work before me through your creative love.

I'm eager to get to know my classmates as we slowly enter one another's digital worlds. Right now, it's faces and names. But soon, I'll know the cadence of their sentences and the depth of their thinking. Perhaps I'll also find some kindred spirits.

We half-joked that when she graduated —which she did during Covid— my turn would come. Still, I doubted seminary was feasible.

Through CDSP, I realized that online learning, like my now-online day job, could be possible. So after twenty-five years away from school, I’m a theology student.

Asynchronous classes and late night East Coast deadlines allow me to work around my studies. I’m thrilled to finally jump into this captivating work and find writers who think about the same big questions I do—even if I only read them after everyone goes to bed.

Faculty Growth: Three New Teaching Colleagues Called to Join CDSP Community By

Professor Peace Pyunghwa Lee

This spring, CDSP appointed three new faculty members: Peace Pyunghwa Lee, instructor in homiletics and pastoral theology; the Rev.Alison Lutz, instructor in ministerial leadership; and the Rev. Mark Chung Hearn, PhD, associate professor and director of contextual education.

Currently a ThD candidate in homiletics with a minor in Black theology at Duke Divinity School, Lee studies the politics and embodiment of preaching.

Her dissertation, Unsettling Preaching: Toward an Unthought Homiletic, recently won the Louisville Institute Dissertation Fellowship. Lee explores not just the form and content of sermons but also “who is allowed to preach and how preaching is performed.”

“I hope to recover a vision of preaching that has been rendered illegible,” Lee writes. Her work is especially inspired by “the unnamed woman who anoints Jesus' feet and whose loving act Jesus proclaims will be told in memory of her ‘wherever the gospel is preached.’”

constitutes preaching and even what constitutes a sermon.

“What would it mean for us to envision preaching in a more expansive way so that we could honor all the ways people have been preaching with their lives and their voices?” Lee asks.“Previously unacknowledged preachers have also been showing us what it means to honor God's call.”

Lee holds an MDiv and MA in spiritual and missional formation from Princeton Theological Seminary and a BA in English from Macalester College. She is a trained spiritual director and winner of multiple fellowships and preaching and ministry awards, including from the Forum for Theological Exploration, Korean American Scholarship Foundation, and Princeton Seminary.

Lee will join the CDSP faculty in January 2021.

Her work is rooted both in academic research as well as her lay and ordained leadership experience in congregations and with Partners in Health (PIH).

At PIH, Lutz managed work between U.S. staff and donors and more than 5,500 Haitian staff to implement health care, education, clean water, and nutrition projects for economically disadvantaged communities and open a 300-bed national teaching hospital.

Lutz is an Episcopal priest and a PhD candidate in religion, ethics, and society at Vanderbilt University. She studies how the cultural assumptions that

“He held the whole picture, so he could draw on other people's skills and leadership: water engineers, medical practitioners, educators,” she says.

“That holistic well-being and full human flourishing:To me, that's the Beloved Community.That's the reign of God. I see the role of a priest as holding together all those different pieces.”

Lutz holds an MST from Yale Divinity School and an MDiv and BFA from Emory University and was previously an instructor at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity.

Hearn joins the CDSP faculty from Seattle University, where he served since 2014 as director of contextual education and assistant clinical professor of contextual education and ministry. He a full clergy member of the United Methodist Church and holds a PhD in practical theology from Claremont School of Theology, an MTS from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, an MDiv from Asbury Theological Seminary, and a BA in religion from Point Loma Nazarene University.

“Primarily I see myself as a bridge builder between church, world, and academy,” Hearn says.“But it always has to make sense within the concrete worlds in which I find myself and other people. My ministerial vocation is the healing and prophetic work that supports the flourishing of all creation.”

“We need both commitments to make transformative learning possible.”

To equip students to be ministers who can help lead change, Hearn also says we have to begin with theological humility and posture of learning: “People are always going to be asking us,‘Do you really believe what you say you believe?’, followed by ‘And how are you going to act on it?’”

All kinds of expertise are necessary if we’re going to build a world where everyone can flourish and have what they need.

In Hearn’s research and teaching, these efforts have variously taken the form of supporting men working to deconstruct toxic masculinity, embracing teaching practices that educate for racial justice, and “trying to help the big-c Church birth anew for the twenty-first century.”

“A lot of this work depends on trustbuilding and making it safe for people— while also asking them to be a little bit more brave and courageous,” he says.

Lutz and Hearn moved to Berkeley this summer and have been teaching their first CDSP classes this fall.

“This is a really exciting time for our talented and growing faculty,” says the Very Rev.W. Mark Richardson, PhD, president and dean.“We look forward to continuing to welcome and get to know our new colleagues and their scholarship in the months ahead.”

Lauren Lukason '14 was ordained to the transitional diaconate June 6 in the Diocese of Massachusetts and is curate at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in Sudbury, MA, and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Weston, MA. The Rev. Judith (Jude) Lyons '19 was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Los Angeles on January 11 and is currently serving as associate priest for adult Christian formation and the arts at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Palos Verdes, CA. The Rev. Babs M. Meairs '79 and her husband, the Rev. Edward Busch, were appointed as chaplains to the retired clergy in the Diocese of San Diego.

The Rev. Eric Metoyer '11 accepted a call to serve as rector of St. Francis' Episcopal Church in San Francisco, CA. The Rev. David Ota '83 retired as rector of St.Ambrose Episcopal Church in Foster City, CA, after twenty-three years of ministry.

The Rev. Laura Rezac '20 was ordained to the transitional diaconate on June 6 and in October joined St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, as associate rector for children and youth formation.

The Rev. Jim Richardson '00 completed his term as interim dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Sacramento, CA, and participated in the Community of Writers conference for professional writers in August. He is working on a book about his abolitionist ancestor, the Rev. George Richardson.

Since Dean Richardson has already described most of the changes that have been occupying our time in the CDSP Operations Department this past summer and fall (“Adapting to Covid, Adapting for the Church’s Future,” p. 2), I thought our readers might appreciate a visual record of these changes.

Speaking for myself, I find it quite surreal to see so few people on our beautiful campus. But every masked encounter in a hallway or outdoor seating area makes me proud of what we have been able to accomplish together in a difficult season.

As it has been throughout, our first priority continues to be the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and neighbors. Here’s what that looks like.

Checkpoint Denniston: For students, faculty, and staff who have business in the main campus buildings, our single point of entry includes a hands-free sanitizer station, a hands-free temperature monitor, a roster for signing in and out, and spare masks for those who need one. The roster allows the school to be prepared for contact tracing if a member of the community contracts Covid-19. | John Dwyer

Some teach their synchronous online sections using the new high-resolution webcams, large-scale monitors, and upgraded Internet.
