LUKE SMILES - Sound and Music Luke started dance training at the Miranda Kalgovas Ballet School, later graduating in 1994 from the VCA. Apart from being a founding member of Chunky Move, he has performed with Vis-à-vis Dance Canberra, The One Extra Dance Company, Meryl Tankard’s Australian Dance Theatre and Thwack. Under the name motion laboratories, Luke’s music work includes Corrupted 2, All The Better To Eat You With, Live Acts, Flexible, Clear Pale Skin and Wanted: ballet for a contemporary democracy for Chunky Move. He has also created music for Australian Dance Theatre productions including Birdbrain, The Age of Unbeauty, and Nothing.

MICHAELA FRENCH - Motion Graphics Designer Michaela French has a background in Fine Arts and has been working in the area of Film, Television and New Media for the last ten years. She is a graduate of the Canberra Institute of the Arts and the Digital Media Department of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. Michaela has written and directed a number of short films, ranging from drama and documentary to digital animation and video installation. Her award-winning film Flux has screened extensively at both national and international film festivals and new media events. Michaela’s recent work has included productions at the Melbourne Planetarium; the Australian Pavilion, Expo 2000, Hanover, Germany; the National Museum of Australia; Opera Australia and the Natural History Museum, Albuquerque, USA. Michaela is currently developing the script for her next short film, Obituary.

JANE SUMMERS-EVE - Costume Designer After a successful career in the fashion industry, Jane moved to Melbourne to further her career knowledge in the arts. A lifetime fascination with costume making and design has culminated in a diverse and scattered career and work history. Her professional credits include work with Opera Queensland, Laurel Frank Costumes, Circus Oz, Bob Murphy Costumes, Playbox Theatre, Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, Johnaton N Shiff Developments, Micro-nite Productions and the television series Hi 8. Her costumes have also branched to feature films including Queen of the Damned, Don’t Peak and the current production of Ned Kelly. Wanted was Jane’s second commission for Chunky Move.

DONNA ASTON - Production & Operations Manager Donna’s career in production and stage management spans 15 years taking her all over Australia and to the UK & USA. Her diverse experience covers theatre, dance, opera, contemporary music & festival production including Sarah Cathcarts’ Walking on Sticks, Tiger Country (Melbourne International Festival), Chamber Made Opera's Medea, Improvement: Don Leaves Linda (Melbourne International Festival), Tresno (Sydney Festival), The Two Executioners, Wide Sargasso Sea, Fresh Ghosts and Matricide The Musical. Donna has also worked on Voice, Jam & Videotape (Adelaide Festival), Artists Services’ Mum’s The Word, Dance Works & Stompin Youth Dance Co's Distance, the inaugural Big West Festival and The Ghost Wife. Donna joined Chunky Move in March 2000.

GIDEON OBARZANEK – Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek studied at the Australian Ballet School. After graduating in 1987, he danced with the Queensland Ballet and the Sydney Dance Company. Obarzanek has choreographed numerous works for dance companies and independent projects within Australia, and his international choreographic credits include commissions for Graz Opera Ballet (Austria), Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company (Israel), Nederlands Dans Theater (Holland), and the Repertory Dance Theatre (USA). In 1995, Obarzanek founded Chunky Move. As the Company’s Artistic Director, he has secured Chunky Move’s position as one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies, creating a diverse body of performance and new media works. Gideon has received several awards and nominations for his choreography. In 1994, he was awarded the Sir Robert Helpmann Scholarship by the New South Wales Ministry of the Arts. In 1996, he received the Prime Minister’s Young Creative Fellowship and, in 1997, his choreography for Bonehead was nominated for Russia’s Benois de la Danse Prize. Bonehead also gained Gideon the 1999 Mo Award for Best Male Dancer – Choreography.

KRISTY AYRE – Performer

Kristy grew up in Lismore, NSW and moved to Sydney at the age of 15. It was through her involvement with the NSW Senior Schools Dance Company that she began to seriously pursue contemporary dance. In 1996, she performed at the Closing Ceremony of the Atlanta Olympic Games and returned to the US in 1998 to perform at the USA High Schools Dance Festival. In 2001, Kristy graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts receiving the Mary Orloff Prize for ‘Most Outstanding Dancer’. During her time at the College, she worked independently on projects with Brett Daffy and Natalie Cursio for Body. Kristy toured with Chunky Move to Tokyo in February 2002 to perform Kim Itoh’s Butterfly & Me, and then made her Australian debut with the Company for the 2002 Melbourne premiere season of Wanted.

FIONA CAMERON – Performer Fiona graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts (Dance) in 1991. From 19931995, Fiona worked in Geneva as a dancer and assistant director of Alias Compagnie. In Australia, Fiona has worked with Sydney Theatre Company, Paul Selwyn Norton, Lucy Guerin, Kate Denborough, Phillip Adams, Kim Itoh, Louise Taube, Brett Daffy and David Pledger. Fiona has performed with Chunky Move since 1997. In 1999, Fiona created Buy This for Chunky Move’s Live Acts and the Next Wave Festival 2000. In 2001, she presented her first full-length work, Looking for Life Cure and last year created Inhabited, a series of free dance performances in city spaces. Fiona was also nominated for a Green Room Award in the category of solo performance for David Pledger’s work, Dark Room.

In 1999 he performed in Passionfruit, Obsession, Storylines, and Project 000 for Tasdance and choreographed Ina (Mother) as part of the Dancer’s season.

Joel continued his career with Tasdance completing the HYPER_mobile season in 2000, and Treasured Island, part of the 10 Days on the Isle International Arts Festival in 2001. Joel also performed as part of the Sydney Dance Company’s Dancer’s Season Freefall in 2001. He made his debut with Chunky Move in the 2002 Melbourne premiere season of Wanted.

LUKE GEORGE - Performer Luke began dancing with Stompin Youth Dance Company in Tasmania and is a graduate of the VCA. Luke co-founded TRIKE dance collective has produced two seasons for the 1998 and 1999 Melbourne Fringe Festivals and the Apollo Bay Music Festival. Luke has performed nationally and internationally with Balletlab and Chunky Move. In April 2001 Luke was associate choreographer for Stompin Youth Dance Company at the Isle International Arts Festival. Luke has travelled to Tokyo with Chunky Move and made his directorial debut with Underground in March 2002.

ANTONY HAMILTON - Performer Antony trained in Dance in Sydney, Perth and New York. In 1999, he joined The Australian Dance Theatre where he stayed for 3 years. In 2002 he joined Chunky Move. He has performed with both companies extensively throughout Australia and overseas. Antony has worked with various choreographers including Gideon Obarzanek, Garry Stewart, Kate Denborough, Bill Pengelly and Bernadette Walong. He has held breakdancing workshops for Ausdance, youth theatre companies and youth detention centres.

He also works as a choreographer and visual artist.

MICHELLE HEAVEN - Performer

ELISSA LEE - Performer Elissa was born in Perth, WA and has spent most of her life living in the USA. She has studied at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Boston Ballet, Juilliard and other places around the US. Elissa also briefly studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, and the Rotterdam Dance Academy in the Netherlands. Elissa has danced professionally with Mind the Gap Dance Theatre in Germany, and with DançaNova, a multi-generational company, in Colorado. While dancing in Germay, Elissa took part in teaching and choreographing several projects involving school children in outreach programs around the country. She has also danced for independent choreographers around the Netherlands. Elissa recently returned to Melbourne where she is currently living and dancing.

CARLEE MELLOW - Performer Carlee Mellow graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1995. She has worked with choreographers Lucy Guerin, Sue Healy, Rebecca Hilton, Ros Warby, Trevor Patrick, Gerard Van Dyck (KAGE), Natalie Cursio, Emma Hamilton and Anna Smith. In 1996, Carlee worked with Shelley Lasica on Character X, and performed in Tracie Mitchell’s Crossed Wires and Sure. In 1997 Carlee performed in Sandra Parker’s in absentia and Two Stories. She was a Dance Works company member from 1998-2001, performing in DW98, In the Heart of the Eye, Audible and Ice Carving. In 1999 she received the Victorian Green Room award for Best Emerging Artist. In 2001 she choreographed her first dance work, episode with Jo Lloyd. In 2002 Carlee performed in Tracie Mitchell’s Under the Weather and Fiona Cameron’s Inhabited. She also performed her solo, Diva, as part of Stephanie Glickman’s Focus 4 season at fortyfive downstairs.

DAVID TYNDALL – Rehearsal Director David Tyndall is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts. He has worked with the Douglas Wright Dance Company, Sue Healey and Company, Phillip Adams, Garry Stewart, Mathew Bergan, Sandra Parker, Lucy Guerin Company and Chunky Move. He won the 1998 Green Room Award for Best Performance by a Male Dancer for Chunky Move’s Bonehead, and Best Ensemble Performance for Lucy Guerin’s Heavy. In 1999 David joined the Board of Directors of Chunky Move. He was the Company's Rehearsal Director in 2001, and was appointed Company Coordinator in late 2002. David has a Graduate Diploma in Arts Management from the University of South Australia.

Michelle Heaven graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Dance in 1992 and Masters of Dance Performance in 2001. Michelle has made extensive contributions as a performer/collaborator to both live theatre and film, working nationally and internationally with choreographers and directors such as Sue Healey, Phillip Adams, Gideon Obarzanek, Lucy Guerin, Douglas Horton (Chamber Made Opera), Sandra Parker, Tracie Mitchell and Leigh Warren. Michelle also creates her own work within the mediums of the live performance and film. She is a recipient of The Dame Peggy Van Praagh Choreographic Centre Choreographic Scholarship and a Victorian Green Room Award (2000). Michelle performed with the Company in Chunky Move’s Melbourne premiere season of Wanted. She is currently developing a new work titled Disagreeable Object funded by the Australia Council.

Founded by Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek in 1995, Chunky Move has been Victoria’s major contemporary dance company since 1998. Chunky Move’s work constantly seeks to redefine what is or what can be contemporary dance within an ever-evolving Australian culture. The company’s work is both diverse in form and content; to date the Company has created a number of works for the stage, site specific projects in Melbourne, and new-media and installation work. Recent works include: Closer, Arcade, Live Acts, Hydra, Crumpled & Corrupted, and Bonehead. Chunky Move has toured extensively throughout Australia and internationally including the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Hungary, United Kingdom, Colombia, Japan, Belgium, Canada and Russia.

June 19 - 29: Three's A Crowd - three new works by Gideon Obarzanek, Rebecca Hilton and Stephanie Lake October 2 - 11: Tense Dave - a new work by Gideon Obarzanek, Lucy Guerin and Michael Kantor. Peer into the private lives of five disparate strangers – each with thier own anxieties, neuroses and perversities – in this intimate, uneasy drama.

Chunky Move runs dance and movement classes for beginners and those with some experience on weeknights and Saturday mornings. Classes include Contemporary Dance, Pilates, Flamenco, and Salsa. There is also an Action Move for Boys class designed specifically for boys aged 6-10 years.
