ANNALISE REES Visual Design

MATTHEW ADEY Lighting Design

Celebrating 10 years of Next Move Annalise Rees is a visual artist who works in the expanded field of drawing including the use of moving image, sound and installation. Annalise’s work is informed by historical practices of exploration, navigation, and cartography and uses drawing as a method of contemporary way finding. With a particular focus on the maritime environment, Annalise has recently been investigating how physical and metaphorical manifestations of the unknown drive searching and enquiry for artist and explorer alike. She exhibits across Australia and has been an artist in residence in Tokyo, New Delhi, Sydney, Hill End and Darwin.

Matthew Adey is a designer and theatre artist from Melbourne. Under the moniker House of Vnholy, Matthew specialises in the creation of live performance, set and lighting design, installation and sculpture. Performance works

by HOV include MONO-, HOMME and The Spectre of Death Looms Large Despite The Variable Messages Being Inevitable aka The Chairs. Collaborations in dance include works by Phillip Adams Ballet, Shian Law, Atlanta Eke, Natalie Abbott, Rebecca Jensen, Melanie Lane, Lilian Steiner and Jo Lloyd. Collaborations in theatre include works by Matthew Lutton and Human Animal Exchange, Rachel Perks, MKA and Red Stitch.

MORGAN HICKINBOTHAM Composition, Sound Design & Live Performance

Morgan Hickinbotham is an experimental composer, music producer/sound designer, photographer and filmmaker based in Melbourne who works throughout Australia, Asia and Europe. Since 2012 he has been working as a composer and sound artist for a range of different dance companies and choreographers including James Batchelor, Joshua Lowe, Amber McCartney, Chloe Chignell, QL2 Dance ACT, Dancehouse, and design companies Studio Hi Ho and Aēsop. In 2015 Morgan had his first solo photography show entitled Uncertainty in Melbourne. In 2017 Morgan toured with DEEPSPACE throughout Europe and participated in a residency at Théâtre National De La Danse Chaillot in Paris.

The team will be presenting at APAM and returning to Europe in 2018. Morgan graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2012.

About REDSHIFT

REDSHIFT is a queer universe in which measurement systems are troubled by the unmeasurable. It stems from a curiosity in touch, physical sensation and speculation of the unknown from body to space.

REDSHIFT is science as performance, conducted in movement.

REDSHIFT has grown out of two years of research, beginning with a unique opportunity to combine scientific and artistic inquiry in one of the most remote places on Earth. Annalise Rees and myself were part of an expedition of 60 scientists, artists and ship’s crew that journeyed to the sub-Antarctic Heard and McDonald islands in 2016.

In cosmology, redshift is a way of describing our relative distance to an object in space. With this work, James Batchelor wants to inspire curiosity and invites audiences to think about dance as a conversation, a collaboration and exchange with other disciplines and communities.

REDSHIFT is your opportunity to discover James Batchelor’s magnetic movement style and experience his refined practice at the intersection of dance and visual arts.

AMBER MCCARTNEY Performer

James Batchelor is an award-winning performer and choreographer from Canberra. He made his debut with Chunky Move in AORTA (2013), a Next Move production by Stephanie Lake, performed in ANTI—GRAVITY (2017) as part of Asia TOPA and Dance Massive and the Rule of Thirds regional tour (2017). His mission as an artist is to make work that inspires curiosity. To shift assumptions, widen awareness and create possibility. He strives to find ways that dance can be a conversation, collaboration and exchange with other disciplines and communities.

Amber McCartney has performed in Chunky Move’s It Sounds Silly (2014) by Adam Wheeler. Amber has worked in close collaboration with James Batchelor for a number of years, most recently performing in DEEPSPACE (2017).

This year Amber performed Antony Hamilton’s Number of The Machine and Prue Lang’s Stellar Project, for Dance Massive. In 2015 she toured globally, performing in works: Duplication, Escapes to the Infinite, Violence, and Multiplication. Amber also choreographed and performed in her own commission titled The Air Reef (2015). She performed in A ten minute event of lived abstraction (2014)

by Prue Lang for Lucy Guerin Inc’s Pieces For Small Spaces. Amber graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2012.

Over the last five years James has generated an extensive body of work including DEEPSPACE (2017), INHABITED GEOMETRIES (2016), and SMOOTH TRANSLATION (2016), METASYSTEMS (2015), ISLAND (2014). James’s work has been presented internationally in Paris, Versailles, Luxembourg, Bassano del Grappa, Chongqing, and Bangkok. He was a resident artist on the RV Investigator, Australia’s marine research vessel, which travelled to the Sub-Antarctic Heard and McDonald islands in 2016. As a performer, he has also worked with choreographers and companies such as Antony Hamilton, Stephanie Lake, Sue Healey, Prue Lang and Tasdance.

James was recently appointed Assistant Director of Dance Theatre Heidelberg in Germany. James graduated from Victorian College of the Arts in 2012.

JACK RILEY Performer

REDSHIFT is Melbourne based dancer Jack Riley’s debut work with Chunky Move. Jack has worked with Tasdance, Fragile Matter, The Australian Opera, King Roger, and Australian Dance Party. Jack presented his work CONTACT (2017) at QL2 Theatre and Melbourne Fringe Festival. His second creation Fuse (2017) was presented as part of the Ralph Indie Program in Canberra. Jack began dancing with QL2 Youth Dance Ensemble in Canberra, where he also worked as a choreographer in 2017. Jack graduated from Victorian College of the Arts in 2016.

JACQUELINE TRAPP Performer

Jacqueline Trapp is a Melbourne based dancer who has worked with James Batchelor on a number of projects.

Jacqueline is a dancer in Prue Lang’s PLANT movement research lab, and has also worked with and performed in creations by Chloe Chignell, Jordan Obrahzanek, Jacqueline Aylward, Emma Riches, and Isabelle Beauvard.

Jacqueline was the recipient of the VCA and MCM 2016 Dr Philip Law Travel Scholarship. Jacqueline graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2016.

Chunky Move is assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body; and supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.
