A note from Anouk van Dijk Interaction is innate in humans. We love company, and in today’s plugged in and connected culture, we are in endless conversations with one another. Our screen driven worlds allow us to capture and manipulate how we are perceived to the point which our interactions are increasingly mediated. Outside of the chatter I wondered how, within the frames of the screen, as mirror, we find a position for ourselves that corresponds to what is seen and what we allow ourselves to expose. There is so often a discrepancy between what we see and what is being experienced; the point between understanding and misunderstanding is so narrow. The screen is crucial and seductive to how we as viewers map ourselves in the image of the other. The pose becomes fetish and the screen an icon maker. The on and off screen space in L U C I D works as the generator for Lauren Langlois and Stephen Phillips to form and then extinguish some of the countless alter egos they embody. Accessing influences from heroes to antiheroes, they relentlessly create, monitor and charge their imagined worlds. Both performers negotiate and define the boundaries in a continued conversation from within two sides of the self: revulsion and empathy often exist in the same moment. In L U C I D we explore the attraction of duality, the masculine, the feminine, the exposed and the secret, the clarity and the chaos of impressions and expectations. This inner world is highly energetic, charged with mood swings and impressions as the performers move between public and private selves, portraits and landscapes.

Anouk van Dijk is the Artistic Director of Chunky Move, Victoria’s flagship contemporary dance company. She is a choreographer, director and the creator behind the movement system Countertechnique. Van Dijk premiered her debut work for Chunky Move, An Act of Now, at the iconic Sydney Myer Music Bowl as part of the 2012 Melbourne Festival. The production went on to win The Age Critics’ Award for Best New Australian Work. This was followed in 2013 by 247 Days (Dance Massive), the first instalment of the Embodiment series – 1:1:1 – at ACCA, gentle is the power (SOLO Festival of Dance 2014 and Summersalt Festival 2015) and Complexity of Belonging (Melbourne Festival 2014) created with German writer and director Falk Richter. Her latest works Depth of Field (Dance Massive 2015) and Rule of Thirds (2016) form the second and third parts of the Embodiment series.
Lauren Langlois first joined Chunky Move to perform in Keep Everything (2012) by Antony Hamilton, before performing in Anouk van Dijk’s works An Act of Now (2012), 247 Days (2013) and Complexity of Belonging (2014). Langlois began her career with the Australian Dance Theatre, performing and touring extensively with the Company between 2008 and 2010 before joining Sydney Dance Company in 2011. As an independent dancer, she toured Larissa McGowan’s Skeleton (Dublin Dance Festival 2013), performed in Stephanie Lake’s A Small Prometheus (Melbourne Festival 2013), Antony Hamilton’s NYX (Melbourne Festival 2015) and Prue Lang’s SPACEPROJECT (DanceMassive 2015). She has also toured extensively nationally and internationally with Chunky Move’s Keep Everything, 247 Days and Complexity of Belonging. Langlois received the 2015 Green Room Award (Best Female Dancer) for her performance in Complexity of Belonging and was nominated in 2014 for 247 Days. Her performance in Keep Everything earned her nominations for Green Room, Helpmann, and Australian Dance Awards. Langlois completed a full time course in classical ballet at the Marie Walton-Mahon Dance Academy before studying contemporary dance at the New Zealand School of Dance.
Stephen Phillips is a Melbourne-based actor who performed in Chunky Move’s Complexity of Belonging – a project by Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk that premiered at the 2014 Melbourne Festival and has been touring New Zealand, Europe and Asia. He has appeared for Melbourne Theatre Company in Boy Gets Girl, Take Me Out, Metamorphoses, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Madwoman of Chaillot, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Realism and A Streetcar Named Desire for MTC’s Explorations season. His other stage credits include The Odyssey for Malthouse Theatre and Black Swan Theatre; The Tempest and As You Like It for Bell Shakespeare. On television, he has appeared in Jack Irish, Barracuda, The Secret River, Childhood’s End, Winners and Losers, Australia on Trial, Offspring, Neighbours, Love Letters, Last Man Standing, City Homicide and Blue Heelers. Feature film credits include Disclosure, Turkey Shoot Reloaded, X and The Killer Elite. Phillips also works extensively as a voiceover artist and audio book narrator. He is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts.
Anny Mokotow is a dramaturge, tutor and lecturer in modern and contemporary dance and theatre. Her research interests include dance, dramaturgy, live-art, film and interdisciplinary histories. She was dramaturge for Chunky Move on Anouk van Dijk’s Depth of Field in 2015. Mokotow studied dance in Amsterdam, after which she worked as a dancer, performer and artistic director with dance and theatre groups in Europe, including Blok en Steel, Krisztina de Chatel, Onafhankelijk Toneel and de Vier-7. Mokotow has a PhD from the University of Melbourne in dance and dramaturgy and a Master of Creative Arts in interdisciplinary practice as well as a post-graduate degree in film from the Victorian College of the Arts.
Blair Hart is the Production and Operations Coordinator at Chunky Move. For the Company he has stage managed: Keep Everything, An Act of Now, 247 Days, AORTA, It Cannot Be Stopped, Complexity of Belonging, gentle is the power and Depth of Field, and was Technical Operator for Rule of Thirds. As a freelance Production and Stage Manager, Hart has worked with Malthouse Theatre, Balletlab, All Tomorrow’s Parties, and fortyfivedownstairs. With bluebottle, he worked on productions for KAGE Physical Theatre, Tim Darbyshire, Ilbijerri Theatre Company, Lucy Guerin Inc, Trevor Patrick and Australian National Academy of Music. Hart studied production at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Ben Cobham’s lighting and design work has been a striking and influential contributor to the dance and theatre scene in Melbourne for over twenty years. Cobham was Lighting Designer for Chunky Move’s Rule of Thirds by Anouk van Dijk in 2016. As co-director of bluebottle his experience encompasses design and light for theatrical and commercial environments. Cobham has extensive touring experience with many of Australia’s arts companies. The outstanding work of bluebottle has been honoured with the 2001 and 2007 Green Room John Truscott Award for Excellence in Design. Cobham is a 2011 Sidney Myer Fellow.
Jethro Woodward is a Melbourne-based composer, musician and sound designer recognised for his expansive and highly layered film, theatre and dance scores. He was the Sound Designer for Chunky Move’s Rule of Thirds by Anouk van Dijk in 2016. He has also worked with some of Australia’s leading major and independent companies including Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, Belvoir Company B, Arena Theatre Company, Windmill, MSO, Rawcus, Stuck Pigs Squealing, Fragment 31, Lucy Guerin, Australian Dance Theatre, KAGE and more. Woodward won Green Room Awards for Moth (Malthouse Theatre, Arena Theatre Company), Goodbye Vaudeville Charlie Mudd (Malthouse Theatre, Arena Theatre Company), Irony Is Not Enough (Fragment 31) and The Bloody Chamber (Malthouse Theatre). A multi Green Room Award winner and nominee, he was the Musical Director and Sound Designer for six-time Helpmann nominated musical Wizard of Oz and multi-award winning Pinocchio.
Chloe Greaves was Costume Designer for Chunky Move’s Rule of Thirds by Anouk van Dijk. Some of her recent designs include The River (Red Stitch), The Bacchae (Fraught outfit, Melbourne Festival), The Waiting Room (Melbourne Theatre Company), The Grumpiest Boy in the World and The Magic Pudding (Victorian Opera), They Saw A Thylacine (Malthouse Theatre, Sydney Festival), Black Cabaret (Malthouse Theatre), Le Donna Curiose (The Juilliard School New York), HART (SheSaid international tour). Greaves also works in film and has styled music videos for artists including Guy Sebastian, San Cisco, Montaigne and Alison Wonderland. Greaves received the 2014 independent theatre Green Room Award for Design for her year’s body of work and has been nominated for four others previously.
Studio PDA is operated by designer/ coders Pete Brundle and James Sandri. Known for an ability to cross disciplines, PDA focuses on designing elegant digital systems for a range of contexts including web, installation, video and performance. Clients and collaborators include Lynette Wallworth, The Design Files, Jacky Winter, National Gallery of Victoria, Jardan, Tin & Ed, Genevieve Lacey, Meredith Music Festival, David Pledger, Bluebottle, Windmill Theatre, Oom Creative, Nat Cursio, The Flaming Beacon, Projects of Imagination, A Friend of Mine, Seesaw, Studio Round and Speak Percussion.
Before relocating to Australia, Van Dijk had an extensive career in Europe, touring worldwide with her Dutch company anoukvandijk dc and performing at the world’s leading festivals and venues including Festival d’Avignon, Adelaide Festival, Sydney Opera House, MASS MoCA, Perth International Arts Festival, Dance Triennale Tokyo, American Dance Festival and Festival TransAmériques. Van Dijk’s long collaborative partnership with German writer and director Falk Richter has resulted in the creation of five critically acclaimed productions that have toured in Europe and internationally. Van Dijk started to create site-specific work in 2011 with the Mensch series – her first serial work. In 2012 Van Dijk was awarded the Golden Swan (Gouden Zwaan) – the Netherlands’ most prestigious dance accolade – in recognition of her outstanding artistic and academic contribution to dance in her home country.

Greaves also works in film and has styled music videos for artists including Guy Sebastian, San Cisco, Montaigne and Alison Wonderland. Greaves received the 2014 independent theatre Green Room Award for Design for her year’s body of work and has been nominated for four others previously.

Known for an ability to cross disciplines, PDA focuses on designing elegant digital systems for a range of contexts including web, installation, video and performance. Anouk van Dijk is the Artistic Director of Chunky Move, Victoria’s flagship contemporary dance company. She is a choreographer, director and the creator behind the movement system Countertechnique. Van Dijk premiered her debut work for Chunky Move, An Act of Now, at the iconic Sydney Myer Music Bowl as part of the 2012 Melbourne Festival. The production went on to win The Age Critics’ Award for Best New Australian Work. This was followed in 2013 by 247 Days (Dance Massive), the first instalment of the Embodiment series – 1:1:1 – at ACCA, gentle is the power (SOLO Festival of Dance 2014 and Summersalt Festival 2015) and Complexity of Belonging (Melbourne Festival 2014) created with German writer and director Falk Richter. Her latest works Depth of Field (Dance Massive 2015) and Rule of Thirds (2016) form the second and third parts of the Embodiment series.
Lauren Langlois first joined Chunky Move to perform in Keep Everything (2012) by Antony Hamilton, before performing in Anouk van Dijk’s works An Act of Now (2012), 247 Days (2013) and Complexity of Belonging (2014). Langlois began her career with the Australian Dance Theatre, performing and touring extensively with the Company between 2008 and 2010 before joining Sydney Dance Company in 2011. As an independent dancer, she toured Larissa McGowan’s Skeleton (Dublin Dance Festival 2013), performed in Stephanie Lake’s A Small Prometheus (Melbourne Festival 2013), Antony Hamilton’s NYX (Melbourne Festival 2015) and Prue Lang’s SPACEPROJECT (DanceMassive 2015). She has also toured extensively nationally and internationally with Chunky Move’s Keep Everything, 247 Days and Complexity of Belonging. Langlois received the 2015 Green Room Award (Best Female Dancer) for her performance in Complexity of Belonging and was nominated in 2014 for 247 Days. Her performance in Keep Everything earned her nominations for Green Room, Helpmann, and Australian Dance Awards. Langlois completed a full time course in classical ballet at the Marie Walton-Mahon Dance Academy before studying contemporary dance at the New Zealand School of Dance.
Stephen Phillips is a Melbourne-based actor who performed in Chunky Move’s Complexity of Belonging – a project by Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk that premiered at the 2014 Melbourne Festival and has been touring New Zealand, Europe and Asia. He has appeared for Melbourne Theatre Company in Boy Gets Girl, Take Me Out, Metamorphoses, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Madwoman of Chaillot, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Realism and A Streetcar Named Desire for MTC’s Explorations season. His other stage credits include The Odyssey for Malthouse Theatre and Black Swan Theatre; The Tempest and As You Like It for Bell Shakespeare. On television, he has appeared in Jack Irish, Barracuda, The Secret River, Childhood’s End, Winners and Losers, Australia on Trial, Offspring, Neighbours, Love Letters, Last Man Standing, City Homicide and Blue Heelers. Feature film credits include Disclosure, Turkey Shoot Reloaded, X and The Killer Elite. Phillips also works extensively as a voiceover artist and audio book narrator. He is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts.
Anny Mokotow is a dramaturge, tutor and lecturer in modern and contemporary dance and theatre. Her research interests include dance, dramaturgy, live-art, film and interdisciplinary histories. She was dramaturge for Chunky Move on Anouk van Dijk’s Depth of Field in 2015. Mokotow studied dance in Amsterdam, after which she worked as a dancer, performer and artistic director with dance and theatre groups in Europe, including Blok en Steel, Krisztina de Chatel, Onafhankelijk Toneel and de Vier-7. Mokotow has a PhD from the University of Melbourne in dance and dramaturgy and a Master of Creative Arts in interdisciplinary practice as well as a post-graduate degree in film from the Victorian College of the Arts.
Blair Hart is the Production and Operations Coordinator at Chunky Move. For the Company he has stage managed: Keep Everything, An Act of Now, 247 Days, AORTA, It Cannot Be Stopped, Complexity of Belonging, gentle is the power and Depth of Field, and was Technical Operator for Rule of Thirds. As a freelance Production and Stage Manager, Hart has worked with Malthouse Theatre, Balletlab, All Tomorrow’s Parties, and fortyfivedownstairs. With bluebottle, he worked on productions for KAGE Physical Theatre, Tim Darbyshire, Ilbijerri Theatre Company, Lucy Guerin Inc, Trevor Patrick and Australian National Academy of Music. Hart studied production at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Ben Cobham’s lighting and design work has been a striking and influential contributor to the dance and theatre scene in Melbourne for over twenty years. Cobham was Lighting Designer for Chunky Move’s Rule of Thirds by Anouk van Dijk in 2016. As co-director of bluebottle his experience encompasses design and light for theatrical and commercial environments. Cobham has extensive touring experience with many of Australia’s arts companies. The outstanding work of bluebottle has been honoured with the 2001 and 2007 Green Room John Truscott Award for Excellence in Design. Cobham is a 2011 Sidney Myer Fellow.
Jethro Woodward is a Melbourne-based composer, musician and sound designer recognised for his expansive and highly layered film, theatre and dance scores. A note from Anouk van Dijk Interaction is innate in humans. We love company, and in today’s plugged in and connected culture, we are in endless conversations with one another. Our screen driven worlds allow us to capture and manipulate how we are perceived to the point which our interactions are increasingly mediated. Outside of the chatter I wondered how, within the frames of the screen, as mirror, we find a position for ourselves that corresponds to what is seen and what we allow ourselves to expose. There is so often a discrepancy between what we see and what is being experienced; the point between understanding and misunderstanding is so narrow. The screen is crucial and seductive to how we as viewers map ourselves in the image of the other. The pose becomes fetish and the screen an icon maker. The on and off screen space in L U C I D works as the generator for Lauren Langlois and Stephen Phillips to form and then extinguish some of the countless alter egos they embody. Accessing influences from heroes to antiheroes, they relentlessly create, monitor and charge their imagined worlds. Both performers negotiate and define the boundaries in a continued conversation from within two sides of the self: revulsion and empathy often exist in the same moment. In L U C I D we explore the attraction of duality, the masculine, the feminine, the exposed and the secret, the clarity and the chaos of impressions and expectations. This inner world is highly energetic, charged with mood swings and impressions as the performers move between public and private selves, portraits and landscapes.
