In July 2012, Chunky Move enters a new period of artistic leadership under the guidance of Artistic Director, Anouk van Dijk. Van Dijk is an internationally acclaimed choreographer whose work has toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

Her work attracts broad audiences through an approach, which is daring, innovative and unpredictable in both its mode and context.

Chunky Move’s multi-tiered programming initiatives foster and support a strong and vibrant dance culture in its home city of Melbourne and also creates critically acclaimed and popular larger productions for touring.

Keep Everything was commissioned by Chunky Move as part of the Next Move – a program committed to nurturing the next generation of Australia’s leading dance makers.

CHUNKY MOVE STAFF

The development of Keep Everything began with the premise that from a single point of departure, an endless array of events can unfold when the subconscious is given permission to lead. With this in mind, I used remnants of creative material from the cutting room floor of previous works as starting points. I was interested in attempting to keep everything created and edit nothing. I was also interested in avoiding contextual analysis of the content as it unfolded, consciously attempting to avoid organising events into a logical and well crafted dramaturgical narrative. What emerged was a realisation that I could not avoid this organising, crafting and contextualising of ideas alongside each other. A larger issue however, emerged from this creative problem – the realisation that as a species we apply this same rule to everything.

We organise. We devise elaborate ways to understand our surroundings, and we can only contextualise events based on past experience and what we already know. We believe we are on the one and only path, and we believe that path is the right one. This has arguably imprisoned us in a concept of our universe that is ultimately fixed and unchangeable. I wondered whether the human invention of recording history through storytelling, art, myth and symbolism was the catalyst for our concept of linear time, defined by past, present, future and an unchangeable universe.

What I found so unsettling about this was that perhaps ideas such as forward, up, and tomorrow are not necessarily positive in and of themselves. With the weight of history on our shoulders, will we ever be able to truly find contentment in the present? These questions have become the main drivers of the work’s narrative.

Antony Hamilton trained in dance in Sydney, Perth and New York. Since 1999 he has performed with Chunky Move, Australian Dance Theatre, Kage Physical Theatre and Lucy Guerin Inc throughout Australia and overseas.

Musicians Julian Hamilton and Kimberley Moyes have been working together creatively for fifteen years. Meeting as students at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, they formed the largely experimental, mostly instrumental band Prop.

Paula Levis studied fashion design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and obtained a Graduate Diploma in Theatre Design at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001. She has designed costumes for Chunky Move (Glow, Singularity, I Want to Dance Better at Parties, Mortal Engine), Lucy Guerin Inc (Structure and Sadness, Aether, Lost Air), Rebecca Hilton (Historia) and KAGE (Headlock, Nowhere Man) as well as for numerous production companies including Victorian Opera, Danceworks, Dancehouse, DanceNorth, Red Stitch Actor’s Theatre and La Mama. She was Design Assistant and Illustrator on the film Tom White and teaches design at the RMIT.

Benjamin is a Melbourne-based dancer who graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Dance in 2008 and was the recipient of the inaugural choreographic award in his final year. As a performer, he has worked with a wide range of artists including Chunky Move, Cobie Orger, Francis Rings, Katie Noonan & The Captains, Lucy Guerin Inc, Martin del Amo, Narelle Benjamin, Sue Healey, and Supple Fox.

As a choreographer, he has worked in Australia and abroad. Notably, he has created dances for Chunky Move, The Lyon Opera Ballet, Australian Dance Theatre (ADT), Dancenorth, LINK, The Victorian College of the Arts, Stompin and Rogue. He has also created short works for ADT’s Ignition seasons and Lucy Guerin Inc’s Pieces for Small Spaces. In 2008 Antony directed and choreographed two full length works, Blazeblue Oneline and the Chunky Move commission, I Like This co-directed by Byron Perry. Other major independent works include the critically acclaimed Black Project 1 and the post-apocalyptic dance drive-in Drift.

Antony was the inaugural recipient of both the Russell Page Fellowship in 2004, and the Tanja Liedtke Fellowship in 2009, which included a seven week residency at RadialsystemV in Berlin. He was also the winner of the Greenroom Award for Best Male Dancer in 2005, and the Helpmann Award for Best Male Dancer in 2009. In 2012 Antony was an inaugural recipient of the Australia Council’s Creative Australia Fellowship.

WORLD PREMIERE 15 – 23 JUNE 2012 CHUNKY MOVE STUDIOS

Their following project, the electronic duo The Presets, has gone on to great success domestically and internationally. Across the last nine years, they have released two critically acclaimed albums, Beams (2005) and Apocalypso (2008). Apocalypso went on to win several ARIA Awards including 2008’s ‘Album of The Year’. In the same year they were also awarded the Triple J Award for ‘Album of The Year’, FBI SMAC Awards ‘Album of the Year’ and GQ Magazine’s ‘Musicians of The Year’.

They were also awarded Songwriters of the Year at the 2009 APRA Songwriting Awards.

Julian and Kim will release the third album

by The Presets in late 2012.

STAGE MANAGER BLAIR HART

AV DESIGN ROBIN FOX Robin is an artist straddling the often artificial divides between audible and visible arts. He was the sound and laser artist for Chunky Move’s Mortal Engine and one of the Composers for Chunky Move’s Connected.

LIGHTING DESIGN BENJAMIN CISTERNE Benjamin is renowned for creating bold designs, based in light, that are integral to a performance. He is passionate about the capability of light in performance design and its role in art, and works collaboratively on projects across all art forms. Since completing his studies in 2002 at the WA Academy of Performing Arts, Benjamin has been instrumental in the development of new techniques in lighting design for the performing arts and exhibition industries.

Benjamin is well known as a designer for contemporary dance and has been a driving part of the creative team for companies such as; Chunky Move, The Australian Ballet, Antony Hamilton Projects, Balletlab, Sydney Dance Company, Stompin, Force Majeure, Lucy Guerin Inc, Dance North, Splinter Group and many more independent groups.

As a performer his work has featured in festivals worldwide. Recent appearances include the Vancouver New Music Festival, Fri Resonans in Trondheim, a new work for the Henie Onstad KunstcenterOslo, Mois Multi Festival Quebec City, Musica Genera Festival Warsaw (2009) and the Yokohama Triennale (2008). His audio visual films are documented on the DVD Backscatter (2004) with more recent works Volta and 5 Creation Myths exhibited at the RoslynOxley9 gallery in Sydney, the Asian Art Biennale in Taipei and the Miniartextil exhibition in Como, Italy.

After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor in Production, Blair freelanced as a Production and Stage Manager, working with organisations including Malthouse Theatre, Balletlab, Trafficlight and fortyfivedownstairs.

Blair’s work with bluebottle included KAGE (Sundowner), Tim Darbyshire (More or Less Concrete), Ilbijerri (Jack Charles vs The Crown and Foley), Lucy Guerin Inc (Pieces for Small Spaces) and Australian National Academy of Music (Quartetthaus and Bach Suites for Dance).

In 2012, Blair joined Chunky Move in the role of Production and Operations Coordinator.

PERFORMER LAUREN LANGLOIS Originally from Perth, Lauren started dancing at a young age taking classes in theatrical, modern, tap, jazz and classical ballet. At age 20, Lauren moved to Newcastle and completed a full time course in Classical ballet at the Marie Walton-Mahon Dance Academy. She then studied as a contemporary dance major at the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington.

From 2008 – 2010 Lauren worked and toured internationally with Australian Dance Theatre, performing in two of the company’s major works G and Be Your Self. In 2011 Lauren joined Sydney Dance Company and worked with choreographer/director Rafael Bonachela, performing in LANDforms, 6 Breaths, We Unfold and The Land of Yes and The Land of No and was part of the successful international tours of Between Breath and Form.

SOUND SYSTEM DESIGN & OPERATION NICK ROUX Nick Roux has been involved with Chunky Move since 2006 (Singularity, I Want to Dance Better at Parties, Tense Dave, Two Faced Bastard, Connected) and toured to an extensive list of venues throughout the world, operating and engineering sound and multi-media systems for numerous productions including the Kalypso motion tracking system for Glow and Mortal Engine. Creatively he works in sound and video: composing, editing, directing and designing, in performance, installation and screen based work.

Nick is currently in development for Global Creatures’ King Kong using the Kalypso system.

PERFORMER ALISDAIR MACINDOE Alisdair is a Melbourne-based dancer and choreographer who trained in dance at the Victorian Collage of the Arts secondary and tertiary schools. In 2011 he performed with Chunky Move (Connected, I Like This and Assembly), Lucy Guerin Inc (Human Interest Story, Untrained and Structue and Sadness) and Antony Hamilton Projects (Drift).

Other performance highlights include his own Bromance (2010), 525600LOVE (2009) and Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain (2008), Chunky Move’s Black Marrow (2009) Lucy Guerin Inc’s, Structure and Sadness (2008) and Leigh Warren and Dancers’, Seven (2009).

Antony Hamilton trained in dance in Sydney, Perth and New York. Since 1999 he has performed with Chunky Move, Australian Dance Theatre, Kage Physical Theatre and Lucy Guerin Inc throughout Australia and overseas.

Musicians Julian Hamilton and Kimberley Moyes have been working together creatively for fifteen years. Meeting as students at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, they formed the largely experimental, mostly instrumental band Prop.

Paula Levis studied fashion design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and obtained a Graduate Diploma in Theatre Design at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001. She has designed costumes for Chunky Move (Glow, Singularity, I Want to Dance Better at Parties, Mortal Engine), Lucy Guerin Inc (Structure and Sadness, Aether, Lost Air), Rebecca Hilton (Historia) and KAGE (Headlock, Nowhere Man) as well as for numerous production companies including Victorian Opera, Danceworks, Dancehouse, DanceNorth, Red Stitch Actor’s Theatre and La Mama. She was Design Assistant and Illustrator on the film Tom White and teaches design at the RMIT.

Benjamin is a Melbourne-based dancer who graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Dance in 2008 and was the recipient of the inaugural choreographic award in his final year. As a performer, he has worked with a wide range of artists including Chunky Move, Cobie Orger, Francis Rings, Katie Noonan & The Captains, Lucy Guerin Inc, Martin del Amo, Narelle Benjamin, Sue Healey, and Supple Fox.

As a choreographer, he has worked in Australia and abroad. Notably, he has created dances for Chunky Move, The Lyon Opera Ballet, Australian Dance Theatre (ADT), Dancenorth, LINK, The Victorian College of the Arts, Stompin and Rogue. He has also created short works for ADT’s Ignition seasons and Lucy Guerin Inc’s Pieces for Small Spaces. In 2008 Antony directed and choreographed two full length works, Blazeblue Oneline and the Chunky Move commission, I Like This co-directed by Byron Perry. Other major independent works include the critically acclaimed Black Project 1 and the post-apocalyptic dance drive-in Drift.

Antony was the inaugural recipient of both the Russell Page Fellowship in 2004, and the Tanja Liedtke Fellowship in 2009, which included a seven week residency at RadialsystemV in Berlin. He was also the winner of the Greenroom Award for Best Male Dancer in 2005, and the Helpmann Award for Best Male Dancer in 2009. In 2012 Antony was an inaugural recipient of the Australia Council’s Creative Australia Fellowship.

Their following project, the electronic duo The Presets, has gone on to great success domestically and internationally. Across the last nine years, they have released two critically acclaimed albums, Beams (2005) and Apocalypso (2008). Apocalypso went on to win several ARIA Awards including 2008’s ‘Album of The Year’. In the same year they were also awarded the Triple J Award for ‘Album of The Year’, FBI SMAC Awards ‘Album of the Year’ and GQ Magazine’s ‘Musicians of The Year’.

They were also awarded Songwriters of the Year at the 2009 APRA Songwriting Awards.

Julian and Kim will release the third album

by The Presets in late 2012.

AV DESIGN ROBIN FOX Robin is an artist straddling the often artificial divides between audible and visible arts. He was the sound and laser artist for Chunky Move’s Mortal Engine and one of the Composers for Chunky Move’s Connected.

LIGHTING DESIGN BENJAMIN CISTERNE Benjamin is renowned for creating bold designs, based in light, that are integral to a performance. He is passionate about the capability of light in performance design and its role in art, and works collaboratively on projects across all art forms. Since completing his studies in 2002 at the WA Academy of Performing Arts, Benjamin has been instrumental in the development of new techniques in lighting design for the performing arts and exhibition industries.

Benjamin is well known as a designer for contemporary dance and has been a driving part of the creative team for companies such as; Chunky Move, The Australian Ballet, Antony Hamilton Projects, Balletlab, Sydney Dance Company, Stompin, Force Majeure, Lucy Guerin Inc, Dance North, Splinter Group and many more independent groups.

As a performer his work has featured in festivals worldwide. Recent appearances include the Vancouver New Music Festival, Fri Resonans in Trondheim, a new work for the Henie Onstad KunstcenterOslo, Mois Multi Festival Quebec City, Musica Genera Festival Warsaw (2009) and the Yokohama Triennale (2008). His audio visual films are documented on the DVD Backscatter (2004) with more recent works Volta and 5 Creation Myths exhibited at the RoslynOxley9 gallery in Sydney, the Asian Art Biennale in Taipei and the Miniartextil exhibition in Como, Italy.

After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor in Production, Blair freelanced as a Production and Stage Manager, working with organisations including Malthouse Theatre, Balletlab, Trafficlight and fortyfivedownstairs.

Blair’s work with bluebottle included KAGE (Sundowner), Tim Darbyshire (More or Less Concrete), Ilbijerri (Jack Charles vs The Crown and Foley), Lucy Guerin Inc (Pieces for Small Spaces) and Australian National Academy of Music (Quartetthaus and Bach Suites for Dance).

In 2012, Blair joined Chunky Move in the role of Production and Operations Coordinator.

PERFORMER LAUREN LANGLOIS Originally from Perth, Lauren started dancing at a young age taking classes in theatrical, modern, tap, jazz and classical ballet. At age 20, Lauren moved to Newcastle and completed a full time course in Classical ballet at the Marie Walton-Mahon Dance Academy. She then studied as a contemporary dance major at the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington.

From 2008 – 2010 Lauren worked and toured internationally with Australian Dance Theatre, performing in two of the company’s major works G and Be Your Self. In 2011 Lauren joined Sydney Dance Company and worked with choreographer/director Rafael Bonachela, performing in LANDforms, 6 Breaths, We Unfold and The Land of Yes and The Land of No and was part of the successful international tours of Between Breath and Form.

SOUND SYSTEM DESIGN & OPERATION NICK ROUX Nick Roux has been involved with Chunky Move since 2006 (Singularity, I Want to Dance Better at Parties, Tense Dave, Two Faced Bastard, Connected) and toured to an extensive list of venues throughout the world, operating and engineering sound and multi-media systems for numerous productions including the Kalypso motion tracking system for Glow and Mortal Engine. Creatively he works in sound and video: composing, editing, directing and designing, in performance, installation and screen based work.

Nick is currently in development for Global Creatures’ King Kong using the Kalypso system.

PERFORMER ALISDAIR MACINDOE Alisdair is a Melbourne-based dancer and choreographer who trained in dance at the Victorian Collage of the Arts secondary and tertiary schools. In 2011 he performed with Chunky Move (Connected, I Like This and Assembly), Lucy Guerin Inc (Human Interest Story, Untrained and Structue and Sadness) and Antony Hamilton Projects (Drift).

In July 2012, Chunky Move enters a new period of artistic leadership under the guidance of Artistic Director, Anouk van Dijk. Van Dijk is an internationally acclaimed choreographer whose work has toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

Her work attracts broad audiences through an approach, which is daring, innovative and unpredictable in both its mode and context.

Chunky Move’s multi-tiered programming initiatives foster and support a strong and vibrant dance culture in its home city of Melbourne and also creates critically acclaimed and popular larger productions for touring.

Keep Everything was commissioned by Chunky Move as part of the Next Move – a program committed to nurturing the next generation of Australia’s leading dance makers.

The development of Keep Everything began with the premise that from a single point of departure, an endless array of events can unfold when the subconscious is given permission to lead. With this in mind, I used remnants of creative material from the cutting room floor of previous works as starting points. I was interested in attempting to keep everything created and edit nothing. I was also interested in avoiding contextual analysis of the content as it unfolded, consciously attempting to avoid organising events into a logical and well crafted dramaturgical narrative. What emerged was a realisation that I could not avoid this organising, crafting and contextualising of ideas alongside each other. A larger issue however, emerged from this creative problem – the realisation that as a species we apply this same rule to everything.

We organise. We devise elaborate ways to understand our surroundings, and we can only contextualise events based on past experience and what we already know. We believe we are on the one and only path, and we believe that path is the right one. This has arguably imprisoned us in a concept of our universe that is ultimately fixed and unchangeable. I wondered whether the human invention of recording history through storytelling, art, myth and symbolism was the catalyst for our concept of linear time, defined by past, present, future and an unchangeable universe.

What I found so unsettling about this was that perhaps ideas such as forward, up, and tomorrow are not necessarily positive in and of themselves. With the weight of history on our shoulders, will we ever be able to truly find contentment in the present? These questions have become the main drivers of the work’s narrative.
