五月份的第二个星期天，母亲节。 “妈 妈，辛苦了”，第24页，特别采访了三位分别 30、40、50岁左右的母亲，分享当妈妈的心 路历程。此外，亲子乐专题，我们还专门邀 请了注册心理师撰写了六个培育说双语小 孩的策略。 我们不仅只是庆祝节日，社区的荣耀也 是值得庆祝一番。希望您可以阅读两篇分别 是 “珀斯华人社区的殊荣”和“社区英雄， 无言感激”的文章，或许会让您开始思考加 入社区的义工行列。

Festivals bring us closer

Celebrating festivals is a traditional culture epassed down from our ancestors.

It gives a reason for family, friends and communities to connect. And yet, it provides an opportunity for our offspring to learn and experience the traditions of the event.

In this issue of Chung Wah Magazine, we bring you coverage of the Chinese New Year celebrations that took place in February and March 2018. Another significant Chinese festival, “Duan Wu Jie”, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is celebrated on every fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. You can find the stories and activities about this festival in this issue.

On the second Sunday in May, “Mother’s Day” is celebrated and in “Mother deserves a special day”, page 24, three mothers in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s respectively share their stories in motherhood. For our parenting topic, we invited a registered psychologist to share six strategies on raising a bilingual child.

今年珀斯的吉祥狗年春节热闹非凡， 在西澳当地政府和中国驻珀斯总领馆的支 持下，中华会馆与珀斯华人社区，联合举办 了多个中国新年系列庆祝活动，活动汇聚了 当地华人的共同力量，为当地民众和游客带 来丰富而密集的文化体验。如今，春节已经 被珀斯当地民众所接受并期待，中国文化也 日益浸润到普通珀斯民众的生活之中。

特别值得一提的是，由中华会馆组织 的2018年珀斯中华新年文化节获得了圆满 的成功，吸引了超过8万珀斯民众前来参加 活动。无论从多元文化游行到摊位，游戏的 安排，从小舞台、大舞台的演出和大屏幕的 展示，都汇聚着大家无私的付出和智慧。无 论是台前的辉煌，还是幕后的工作都折射出 我们这个大团队的力量。火火红绸、浓浓年 味，凝聚无数心血和付出的新年文化节赢得 了广泛认可。作为主办单位，我们非常感动

2018年“中华杯”龙舟节上。赛龙舟是传统 端午佳节的一项重要活动，龙舟运动的精髓 就是团结合作共赢。这个发轫于华人传统文 化的节日，在澳洲多元文化土壤的滋养下， 已成为一个集运动、娱乐、文化传播于一体 的水上运动。会馆将为中华龙舟队 购置一 条龙舟，以便龙舟队员们能够更好的展开训 练。希望龙舟爱好者们都能积极参与到“中 华龙舟节”中，使传统龙舟文化得以传承， 在西澳的沃土里开花、结果。 中华会馆将继续秉承“凝聚融合•文化 传承•人道关怀”的理念，致力于长老服务、 中华语言、文化和教育的推广，为广大会员 和社区提供优质的服务。中华会馆是所有的 华人华侨和社区同胞的共同机构，我们期待 着广大会员的积极参与，为我们会馆的建设 与发展共同努力! 谢谢大家！

Dear members:

This year's auspicious Spring Festival kicked start the year of the dog with a festive atmosphere. With the support of the West Australian Government and the Chinese Consulate in Perth, the Chung Wah Association and the Perth Chinese community jointly organised many events celebrating the Chinese New Year. This series of events united the efforts of the local Chinese community, and brought valuable cultural experiences, in quick succession, to local residents and tourists alike. At present, the spring festival has become both accepted and expected by the local community; Chinese culture has also been infused into the daily lives of Perth residents.

Worthy of a special mention is the fact that the 2018 Chinese New Year Fair organised by the Chung Wah Association achieved great success, having attracted over 80,000 visitors. Selfless sacrifice and wisdom from everyone were behind everything from the multicultural parade to market stalls, to games, to performances on both stages, to the display on the super screen. Whether it’s the glamour on stage or the work back stage, they all reflected our teamwork. Red decorations enhanced the festive spirit. The Chinese New Year Fair is made possible from countless efforts of volunteers who received recognition far and wide.

As the main organiser, we feel both very touched and very proud. We would like to thank every single

person who has contributed to this event. We would also like to thank all the organisations and media who participated and supported our event. Your support and contributions are what made the “Perth Chinese New Year Fair” a recognised Chinese cultural icon, the biggest and most far-reaching Chinese cultural event, and a bright spot in the West Australian multicultural calendar.

The annual Chinese New Year Dinner and Dance was also held at the Chung Wah Cultural Centre, and provided an opportunity for members to mingle and get to know each other more.

The Chung Wah Association and Perth Huaxing Art Troupe also jointly organised the Perth leg of the “Cultures of China, Festival of Spring” - an engaging and artistic Chinese cultural performance staged at the Perth Concert Hall during the Spring Festival period, especially for overseas Chinese in Perth. This Spring Festival performance tour was well received and welcomed by the Perth community and was supported by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.

After the Spring Festival series of events, there is still a lot of cultural and community work for Chung Wah Association to do. Our next task is to organise the “Chung Wah Cup” Dragon Boat Festival, to be held on the 3rd of June 2018. Dragon boating is an important traditional activity to mark the Duanwu Festival; the

essence of dragon boating is in winning through collaboration and unity. While this sport originated from traditional Chinese culture, after being nurtured by Australian multiculturalism, it has developed into a water sport that combines sport, entertainment and cultural significance.

The Association will purchase a dragon boat for the Chung Wah Dragon Boat Team, to facilitate better training by the team members. We hope that all dragon boating enthusiasts can actively participate in the Chung Wah Dragon Boat Festival, so that the legacy of traditional dragon boating culture can be further passed on.

Chung Wah Association will continue to honour our vision of “Through promoting Harmony, preserving our Heritage and practising Humanity“, we serve as the bridge between the Chinese community and mainstream society”; we will continue to work on our aged care services, the promotion of Chinese language, culture and education, and to provide quality services to members and the community. Chung Wah Association is an organisation that belongs to all people of Chinese heritage and members of the Chinese community. We look forward to our members’ active participation and contributions towards building and developing the Association further.

The Order of Australia 澳大利亚勋章

Big Honour for the Perth Chinese Community

The Australia Day Awards in January this year once again recognised the contributions of respected members of the Chung Wah Association. This year, Dr. Bob Chin Huat Tan became a member of the Order of Australia for his meritorious contributions and voluntary service to the Perth Chinese community. Dr. Tan is the chairperson of the Chung Wah Council of Elders and he is the third member of Chung Wah Association to be awarded this honour.

The Order of Australia

In the Australian honours system, appointments to the Order of Australia confer the highest recognition for outstanding achievement and service.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II established this system of honours and awards on 14 February 1975. Prior to 1975, Australians were recognised under the British honours system, also known as the Imperial Awards.

There are two divisions of the Order of Australia: the Civil or General Division and the Military Division. The General Division of the Order of Australia has five levels originally: Knights / Dames of the Order; Companion of the Order (AC); Officer of the Order (AO); Member of the Order (AM) and Medal of the Order (OAM). The rank of knighthood from the Order of Australia was scrapped in 1986. It was reinstated by former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in 2014, but was removed from the list by current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in November 2015.

澳大利亚勋章

每一年的澳大利亚国庆日和女王生日，澳大利亚政府都会为国 家或人民作出卓越贡献或突出服务的澳大利亚公民进行表彰，并颁 发”澳大利亚勋章” (Order of Australia)。此澳大利亚勋章制度， 是由英国女王伊丽莎白二世在1975年2月14日创立的。而在此之 前，澳大利亚则是沿用英国帝国体系来表彰本国公民的。

澳大利亚勋章分为两大类：通用类和军事类，原本分为五个级 别，排名由高至低为：澳大利亚爵级勋章和女爵级勋章 Knights / Dames of the Order，澳大利亚同伴勋章 Companion of the Order （AC）, 澳大利亚官佐勋章 Officer of the Order (AO)， 澳大利亚 员佐勋章 Member of the Order(AM), 澳大利亚勋位勋章 Medal of the Order (OAM)。其中的澳大利亚爵级和女爵级勋章只限于通用 类别，在1986年曾撤销，在2014年由时任总理艾伯特宣布恢复这一 勋位，但于2015年11月又被继任的总理特恩布尔宣布取消。

Nomination and Appointment of OAM

Nominations for awards in the General Division of the Order of Australia come directly from the community.

Nominations are considered by the Council for the Order of Australia, which makes recommendations direct to the Governor-General. The Council meets twice a year.

There are 19 members, including representatives of every state and territory, public office holders (ex-officio) and community representatives. The Governor-General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister appoints the community representatives on the Council.

Appointments in the Order of Australia are not made posthumously. However, a nomination will be considered if the person is alive when the nomination form is received by the Australian Honours and Awards Secretariat at Government House in Canberra.

The awards are generally announced on Australia Day (26 January) and on the Queen’s Birthday public holiday (June).

澳洲勋章如何选定？

Since 1975, three active members of the Association have been appointed as OAM. They are Mrs. Edie Hoy Poy (1988), Mrs. Anita Chong (2015) and the most current recipient, Dr. Bob Tan.

由1975年至今，中华会馆的活跃分子中有三人曾获颁澳大利亚勋位勋章 Medal of the Order (OAM)，他们分别是1988年荣获此殊荣 的“中华妈妈”阮丽茹女士；2015年有林玉莲；2018年有陈振发医生。

Bob TAN OAM

Dr Bob Tan, the chairperson of the Chung Wah Council of Elders, was conferred the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) as part of the 2018 Australia Day honours. Bob was awarded the medal for his service to the Chinese community in Western Australia. In addition to serving on the Chung Wah Executive Committee, Bob was active in many Chung Wah cultural activities and he actively initiated the process which led to the fundraising and subsequent acquisition of the land in Balcatta, where the current activity centre is situated. He received life membership from the Association in 2010 and is also a life member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, as well as a Justice of the Peace since 1983. Bob has dedicated over 40 years to voluntary work with the Chinese, seniors and the disadvantaged in our society.

Anita Chong OAM

The late Mrs. Anita Chong was conferred the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) as part of the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours. Anita was awarded the medal for her service to foreign language education as a teacher, as well as to professional organisations.

Anita began teaching Mandarin at the Chung Wah weekend schools in 1977 as a volunteer teacher and became the first Principal in 1984 of the Chung Wah Chinese School based at West Leederville Primary School. She was a Founding and Life Member of both the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Western Australia and the Chinese Language Teachers Federation of Australia. In 2000, Anita was awarded “Outstanding Chinese Language Educator” by the government of the People’s Republic of China. In 2009, she received an Outstanding Contribution Award from the Professional Teaching Council of Western Australia. Three years later, she won the coveted MLTAWA (Modern Language Teachers’ Association of WA), Hilde Dixon Award, the highest honour for language teachers in WA.

The late Mrs. Edie Hoy Poy was the first member of Chung Wah to be awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her meritorious contributions and voluntary services to the Perth Chinese community. Edie was personally vested with the Medal

by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Government House Ballroom in April 1988. This Australia Day Award was an honour which was richly deserved and proudly felt by all Chung Wah members and the Chinese community at that time.

Edie worked tirelessly for over 50 years with the Chinese and other migrant communities, seniors and the disadvantaged in our society. Her active involvement in community groups, forums, workshops and public consultations was directly responsible for the development and improvement of a vast number of services and programs that benefit both the migrant and wider communities. In 2002, Edie received the Multicultural Ambassador Award and the Western Australian Citizen of the Year Community Service Award.

Dr. Eric Tan, born in Malaysia to Chinese parents, became the first overseas student to graduate from the University of Western Australia Medical School with the AMA Gold Medal in 1967. He is also a life member of the Chung Wah Association.

Growing up during the period of the Second World War, Dr. Tan came to realise that life is short and decided to “extend” his life into three for these aspects: Family and Professional Career; His People and Community; and Global Community. His strong sense of community spirit is partially inherited from his late father, who was the Chairman of the local Chinese School Board in Malaysia. 出生于第二次世界大战时期的他，从小就理解到生命的短暂，所以一直很努力把生命一分为三发展，分别为家 庭和专科事业、自己的民族同胞和社区，以及全球人类。他强烈的社区精神也许是由已逝父亲所遗传，其已故父亲 曾是马来西亚中文学校的校董主席。

Winning Glory for Chinese in WA In the 1980s, the Chinese community was self-effacing and subject to discrimination, both institutionally and in the public arena. Some people were tormented and had their livelihood damaged through bombings, especially of Chinese restaurants. Dr. Eric Tan became a leader in the community to fight racism. As President of the Chung Wah Association between 1986 and 1990, he helped to get a law against incitement to hatred passed in the WA Parliament.

In order to generate a better understanding of the Chinese culture and improve community relations, Dr. Eric Tan (as Chairman of the 75th Anniversary Celebration Committee) and his team arranged a Festival of exhibitions, performances, lectures, films and competitions, designed to inform and involve the general public. The Festival was a rewarding undertaking and it provided a new

Furthermore, Dr. Eric Tan initiated the Oz concert that provided an opportunity for various ethnic communities to present their cultural performances in front of mainstream communities. The Oz concert was organised to promote community harmony and this has endured for 25 years. A testimonial photograph of multicultural people taken at the Oz concert celebrating “Harmony” has won the United Nations Media Peace Prize.

Ministers and other prominent political figures from both Australia and aboard have regarded it as essential to speak at the iconic Coffee Shop Forums of WACCC as these promote international business.

Dr. Tan and a few Chung Wah members then founded the WA Chinese Chamber of Commerce (WACCC), which was extended from the Business and Professional Group of the Chung Wah Association. With the strong political and media contacts of Dr. Tan, Prime Ministers, Cabinet

Dr. Tan started as an overseas student and finished up as the Chancellor of Curtin University, one of the largest university in Australia.

His passion in finding a path for other people, especially the younger generation, to excel has never ended. During the last economic recession, the youth unemployment rate was in the mid-twenties and in some areas 75%. With the help of friends, Dr. Tan established Project Employ Youth. He and his team secured more than 1,500 first time jobs for young people. For this successful and extraordinary effort, he was awarded Citizen of the Year for Western Australia in 1993.

谈及陈医生自认最大的成就，他表示很庆幸还活着， 走过一段漫长的路途，自己给社区的贡献赢得了社会对他 的尊重。至于他的养生之道就是凡事都不宜过于沉醉或 执着。

陈医生希望中华会馆可以推行一项计划来记载西澳 华人历史。他相信所有在西澳有华人背景的人只要愿意捐 出$1来支持，应该足以资助这项计划。

When asked about his greatest achievement, he is grateful that he is still alive and has gone through a long journey, having a respectable reputation for his contributions to the community. Always try to avoid excessive indulgence in any matter is his way to stay young.

The Perth Chinese New Year Fair for the seventh year in a row supported by the City of Perth, the Office of Multicultural Interest Western Australia and LotteryWest, seeing the streets of Northbridge transform into a colourful, loud and proud celebration of not just Chinese culture, but of Perth city’s ever expanding cultural diversity. Indeed Chinese New Year is celebrated as a West Australian rather than ethnic Chinese event.

ed and Gold lanterns, Steaming dumplings and steady drum of lion dancers combined to transform Northbridge into an oriental hub of activity at the 2018 Perth Chinese New Year Fair as thousands gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year. The growth of the event, and the way that Chinese New Year celebrations are increasingly being enjoyed by Western Australians of all backgrounds, shows the positives and strength of our multicultural society, which benefits from diversity and shared cultural traditions.

18th, 2018 in Northbridge. This is the seventh year Chung Wah has organised this significant event that widely open to community at large to celebrate Chinese New Year together.

Chinatown in Roe Street and sections of James and Lake Streets were filled with entertainment programs that showcase the cultural heritage of the Chinese during the first half of the day.

Before the show start, a huge crowd was already in place around the street areas awaiting for the first lion dance and lighting of fire crackers.

Followed by the multicultural parade that ranged from WA Police

Pipe Band, Chung Wah Lion Dance Troupe, Chinese Community Centre and a variety of Multicultural groups. There were hourly lion dance and cultural performances on the street and various Chinese cultural demonstrations, Games and Competitions were continuously accessible by visitors of the day between 12pm and 5pm. “God of Fortune” and volunteers dressed in the traditional Chinese costumes thronged the street to entertain and give away lucky red packets to kids as blessings of good luck and wealth.

with an estimated crowd of more than 80,000 people, enjoying a wide variety of performances, activities, and of course, a diverse range of street food. Kids has a great time enjoying themselves on the variety of games and activities around the Kid’s Zone.

The multicultural concert in the evening was again the highlight of the second half of the event. It was obvious that the great reputation of the concert has travelled far and wide, as evidenced by the packed house at the Northbridge Piazza well before the start of the concert. The Piazza hosted the official opening of the event at 7 pm starting with a grand lion dance performance by the Chung Wah Lion Dance Troupe, and climaxed with a vibrant multicultural concert.

The profile of this event has clearly gone up by leaps and bounds, judging by the amount of media interests and coverage on the events, as well as the acknowledgement of government bodies and political figures. In attendance were, Hon. Mark McGowan ( Premier of WA), Dr. Mike Nahan (Opposition Leader of WA), Mr. Lei Kezhong (Consul-General of Chinese Consulate General in Perth), Mr. Paul Papaliah (Minister

for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests in WA), Mr. Bill Johnston ( Minister for Asian Engagement in WA), Mrs. Lisa Scaffidi (Lord Mayor of Perth), Dean Nalder MLA, Tony Krsticevic MLA, Pierre Yang MLC, David Michael MLA, Yaz Murabarakai MLA, and consular officials of other Perth based Consulates from Asian countries, senators of the Perth municipal government as well as guests from politics, business, media, community and educational institutions.

Over one hundred VIPs attendance the event and enjoyed the multicultural performance. Our joint venture with the West Australian Newspapers to produce a special Chinese New Year lift out magazine which was distributed with the newspaper a week before the event has further lifted the profile of the Chinese community in Perth.

Perth Chinese New Year Fair 珀斯新年文化节

全城喜庆新春

2 018 年 2 月18日，“ 珀 斯中华 新 年文化节”活动在珀斯市北桥James Street隆重举行。 “珀斯中华新年文化 节”由西澳中华会馆组织，是西澳州规 模最大、内容最丰富、影响最大的中华 文化品牌活动。本届文化节是中华会馆 举办的第七届文化节，收到了西澳各界 人士的欢迎。文化节当日，珀斯北桥中 国城里挂满大红灯笼，洋溢着新春佳节 的喜庆。中午12点整，西澳上议院议员 杨帅先生到场并点燃鞭炮，劈里啪啦， 鞭炮声声，揭开了本次新年文化节的序 幕；接着，有来自西澳的15个富特色的 多元文化游行方阵参加了游行， 浓墨 重彩的展现了精彩纷呈的中国及多元 文化元素。

化节从中午12点一直持续到晚上 9点，活动内容包括 传 统的舞龙 舞狮表演、富有特色的多元文化游行方 阵、各国传统美食和民俗摊位、民乐、 京剧、粤剧、中国传统歌舞表演以及多 元文化文艺演出等项目，积极展示了中 国文化和饮食的魅力，深得当地民众喜 爱。当天，前来参加文化节的游人络绎 不绝，人数多达八万人次。 街道两旁摆设着近百个以中国和世 界各地民俗和美食为主体的多国文化美 食摊位，参与活动的游客除了华人外， 更多的是当地市民穿着节日盛装，携家 带口，边走边逛，边吃喝、边玩乐，沐浴 在祥和幸福、欢乐喜庆的气氛中。本次 文化节设有特色银行、中文学校、社区 与长者服务，社区服务等多元服务性摊 位，为华人提供便民中文服务。

ne of the key motives for Chinese people to celebrate festivals is a sense of togetherness especially during Chinese New Year. There’s nothing quite like a good celebration to bring people and communities together. The 2018 Chinese New Year period saw many of Perth’s local government recreational places, shopping centres, restaurants, schools and tourist attractions filled with decorations, activities and performances relevant to Chinese New Year. It is a great joy to see more and more people each year from outside the Chinese community take the opportunity to connect, learn and share in Chinese culture.

ion Dance is a quintessential part of Chinese New Year celebrations. It has continued to be a popular performance among celebrations in Western Australia, as it is believed that the lion is an auspicious animal that brings good luck.

Accompanied by the music of beating drums, clashing cymbals and resounding gongs, and performed in a lion costume, the lion dance always draws the attention of the surrounding people to watch the demonstration of lion dance together with martial arts agility.

uring the Chinese New Year (CNY) festival of the Year of the Dog, the Chung Wah Chinese Orchestra performed in some major CNY events in Perth, particularly the 2018 Perth Chinese New Year Fair. In addition, the orchestra also performed in several CNY celebrations, such as Gloucester Park, nursing homes and shopping centres. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to bring Chinese music and introduce traditional musical instruments to the local community.

With intensive training and practice, the musicians performed their best in these shows and their efforts were highly appreciated.

华舞蹈团一直以来都有排练多种古典 和现代舞蹈。我们的舞曲种类繁多， 一般都带有中华传统文化曲风。今年，我们 选用了多个较受欢迎的舞蹈在珀斯数个新 春活动演出。几乎春节期间每个周末，我们 的舞蹈组都在河南河北的社区活动，呈献红 巾舞、彩带舞、彝族舞和好几种扇子舞。

虽说每个活动都不一样，不过每场演 出都迎来热烈的喝彩。这些演出，包括在购 物中心的顶楼车场、公园里的青葱草地、阳 光下的印度洋为背景的场地。我们身上的漂 亮衣裳和唯美的舞姿，吸引了观众的目光， 尤其是孩童更觉得有趣。

这些 演出当中，中华新春文化节上的 演出无疑是最瞩目的。我们给现场歌手伴 舞，呈献彩带舞、现代扇子舞，还有由舞蹈 家朱敏博士编出的新版古典扇子舞，采用末 代皇帝电影原声为舞曲。另一项亮点，就是 Coogee区音乐节的演出，配合土著音乐家 充满风土文化色彩的原野舞蹈。

hung Wah Dance practices the many forms of Chinese classical and contemporary dance. Our repertoire is varied and represents our rich Chinese cultural heritage. This year we performed a selection of our favourite and popular dances across Perth. Almost every weekend the red handkerchief dance, ribbon dance, Yi dance and an array of fan dances were performed in community events both north and south of the river.

Although each event was different the appreciation for our dancing was the same. We performed on rooftops of shopping malls, on lawns in local parks, with the setting sun and Indian Ocean as our backdrop and more. Our delightful

costumes and beautiful dances wowed our audiences especially the children for whom having our pink ribbons fly over their heads was a lot of fun.

A highlight performance was undoubtedly the Chinese New Year Fair in Northbridge.

Our group performed a variation of our ribbon dance to accompany live singers, a contemporary fan dance as well as a new classical Chinese fan dance choreographed by Dr. Min Zhu to the motion soundtrack of the Last Emperor.

Another highlight was the Coogee Live Festival where we collaborated with a local Aboriginal artist on the dance of the kangaroo to the calls of a kookaburra and dingo from his didgeridoo.

2018年2月28日，正值全球华人同庆中国 新年期间，中华会馆妇女部二十多位成员 在妇女部长邹纪平的带领下来到Osborne Contemporary Aged Care护老院进行慰 问演出，希冀多元文化的交融，更希望借此 将中国年的喜庆洋溢到老人的心中，给护 老院的老人们送去关爱和温暖。

部长主持了义演活动。她向护老院的 老人们和工作人员介绍了有关中国新 年的传统风俗习惯，并与在场观众互动讨论 中国生肖文化，气氛轻松愉悦。

整场演出一个小时多一点，老人们看 得很入神，不断报以热列的掌声。其中一位 老人说，”非常感谢你们的演出，感谢你们 带来精彩的中国文化艺术!” 看到老人们从心底绽放的欢乐，妇女 部的姐妹们感觉所有的辛苦付出都得到前 所未有的回报！只要人人都献出一点爱，世 界将变成美好的人间……

Chung Wah Association Women’s subcommittee performs at Osboine Contemporary Aged Care Nursing Home.

n 28 February 2018, during the Chinese New Year festive period, the Chung Wah Association Women’s subcommittee chairperson, Ms Jiping Zhou, led about 20 of her members to visit the Osboine Contemporary Aged Care Nursing Home. They performed in front of the residents, with the hope of bringing care, warmth and a Chinese New Year festive atmosphere to them through multicultural exchange.

Ms. Zhou hosted the proceedings. She introduced Chinese New Year customs to the nursing home residents and staff, followed by a light-hearted audience interaction discussing the 12 Chinese zodiac animals.

The performance lasted for just over an hour. The senior citizens were mesmerised and rewarded the performers with loud applause. One of the residents said, “Thank you very much for your performance and thanks for bringing such fantastic Chinese culture and art!”

Seeing the heartfelt joy on the senior citizens faces made their efforts all the more worthwhile. If everyone contributes a little bit of love, this world will become a much better place...

The Puppet-Show Man – Yeung Fai 文／译◎Elvie Yap 叶俐廷

ombining traditional puppetry skills with modern multimedia effects, Hand Stories is a madcap masterpiece of puppetry from Perth Festival 2018 Artist-in-Residence, Yeung Fai. The Chung Wah Association proudly invited the fifth-generation master of traditional Chinese glove puppet theatre, Yeung Fai, who presented the Chinese ancient art form to approximately fifty community members at the Chung Wah Association hall on 28 February 2018.

The puppet theatre show told the deeply moving and often amusing tale of Yeung’s family of famous puppeteers, who fell foul of the Cultural Revolution.

With phenomenal skill and imagination, he manipulated exquisite hand-crafted figures that came to life to share a tragic family story that is bizarre, beautiful and inextricably bound with the fascinating history of 20th century China.

合传统木偶戏技术及多媒体效 果，2018年珀斯国际艺术文化节特别 安排了中式布袋木偶戏大师-杨辉，呈献他 多年的杰作。 2月28日，中华会馆有幸邀请到福建闽 南布袋木偶戏世家的第五代传人杨辉老师， 在中华会馆大楼给近五十名社区人士带来 他的经典木偶戏《矛盾对打》。

这木偶戏的故事扣人心弦之余，杨辉 以幽默的方式带出其家族从辉煌岁月走入 文化大革命后的没落。杨大师运用他的巧妙 技术配合想象，把精美的布袋木偶的一举一 动，诠释地淋漓尽致，带出那发生在二十世 纪中国的那充满传奇、凄美的家庭悲剧。

出生于1964年的杨辉，把这中国传统 文化艺术的布袋木偶戏广传到西方国家。来 自著名木偶艺术家族的第五代传人，四岁就 开始接受培训。命运弄人，因被流放海外， 最终居留在法国巴黎，这个地方让他开始传 承这门布袋木偶戏艺术，将这古代艺术重新 点燃起来。 首次来到珀斯的新春活动演出，杨辉 大师非常喜欢这个时节的温热天气，同时也 感受到华人社区的热情和厚爱。

Yeung Fai brings to the West the magnificent Chinese tradition of glove puppetry. Born in China in 1964, he is the fifth generation in a family of famed puppeteers and started training at the age of four. Yeung was exiled as a refugee, and now lives in Paris, the base from which he creates and tours work all around the world, keeping the ancient art form alive.

Being the first time presenting in Perth during Chinese New Year, Fai enjoyed the warm weather at this time of the year. He was also thankful to the hospitality and warm welcome from the local Chinese community.

Migrant’s Voices 移民心声

多年以前，在接获马来西亚教育局通知 保 送到珀斯时，我对珀斯这个地方完全陌 生，更没想到会在这里落地生根。

当年我在三打根华文小学毕业后，就转 入英语系的中学。凭 藉当时英国殖民地的 英校毕业证书，可在当地政府部门或外国企 业从事初级行政工作，而我却选择了继续升 学。

最后完成中五课程之时，政府给我一个 机会到珀斯上预科，进而到西澳大学上工程 系课程。我马上在地图上找寻珀斯所在处--一个孤独的城市，与所有的主要城市有一段 距离。 1962年2月22日晚，我乘搭飞机来到珀 斯。同一天晚上，也就是美国太空人John

Where was Perth!

I had no idea where Perth was before I was advised by the Education Department in Malaysia to come – absolutely no inkling that I would settle to live here.

After first finishing the Chinese primary school in Sandakan, I moved to an English school. An English School Leaving Certificate in those days of the British Colony, could mean a junior clerical job in a government department, or a western trading firm. Instead, I was picked to go for a Higher School Certificate (known as Form VI).

Towards the end of this course, an opportunity arrived. I was offered to do matriculation, progressing to an engineering course at UWA in Perth.

Obviously, I found Perth on a map book – isolated and far from other major cities.

I flew to Perth on the night of 22 February 1962 – the same night when the American astronaut Colonel John Glenn made his historical flight orbiting round the earth in a tiny capsule.

1968年年底，我大学毕业、结婚，也开 始在Fremantle 码头管辖机构工作。1970 年年底，我带着妻子和两个儿子一个女儿回 到三打根定居，三个孩子还在当地华文小学 毕业。由于当年马来西亚的英语中学都改为 马来语系，孩子只能到新加坡上英校。我们 夫妻倆也意识到孩子最终只能在马来西亚 以外的国家上大学。 1989年，我们的选择就是举家回流到 珀斯。毕竟在 这 之前，我在珀斯曾居 住 九 年，有一定的人脉关系、朋友圈。相比于其 他澳大利亚城市悉尼墨尔本，珀斯最靠近马 Perth, in those days, was more of a suburban town than a city. Its infrastructure was crude.

By the end of 1968, I graduated, got married and worked with the Fremantle Port Authority.

I returned to Sandakan with my wife at the end of 1970. We raised three children, a daughter and two sons. They finished the Chinese primary school in Sandakan.

They had to complete their SLC in Singapore because the English schools in Malaysia had then been converted to Malay-medium.

Consciously, and seriously, we realised that they would eventually have to pursue their tertiary education outside Malaysia.

Logically, the choice was simple – the whole family came to Perth in 1989. I had lived here for nine years previously – already familiar with it, had friends and connections here. Perth is closer,

Settling in Perth was no big problem – it was like ‘coming back’ to live. To the children, it was a new challenge. They finished Year 12 with good grades and acquired their Bachelor’s Degree at UWA as scheduled. Overall, they had no major issues in adjusting and integrating – it was like from one multi-racial, multi-cultural society Malaysia to another - Australia.

As for myself, I found work as a tax-agent and as an interpreter, both part-time, for about three years. Then I became an administrative assistant with the Department of Immigration. In 1996, I gained a permanent position with a lawenforcement body as its Chinese Liaison Officer cum Administrative Assistant.

Here I am, living leisurely in Perth, and rather contented. It was a long journey from not knowing where Perth was to this day of sophisticated modern city.

Home is where the Heart is My husband and I gave up our friends, family, gourmet cuisine, high income and the superior quality of life in Taipei, and brought our baby daughter to Perth, so that she can grow up in a carefree environment and receive a balanced education.

When we first arrived in Perth, the blue sky, white clouds, fresh air, the calm, mirror-like surface of the Swan River, white sandy beaches, the serene Perth city, well-mannered residents, drivers and pedestrians, tree-lined terraces, friendly neighbours and professional medical services, etc, all made us fall in love with this, the most isolated city in the world.

Because we loved this peace and quietness, and also the way of life whereby everyone respects each other, we adapted to the new life very quickly.

We enjoy immensely many activities that would’ve been impossible in Taipei: planting our own flowers and vegetables in the garden; family time with both of us able to look after our kids at the same time; and also joining community leisure classes, charity or political activities, so that I could get to know more about Australian culture. After my child started school, I also started volunteering at the school. Firstly, this allowed me to interact more with teachers and other parents, so I could understand the Australian way of life more, and

The second Sunday in May, is a day that we can express our love loudly to her, our mother. And while it certainly isn’t enough to appreciate her just one day out of the year, Mother’s Day is a good start.

Every stage of motherhood has its joy and its trouble. For a mother with young children, it is a physical and mentally demanding role. The parent is suddenly faced with letting go of a parental attachment held from birth. Motherhood is such a funny thing. Similar to life, it seems like it goes so fast and so slow all at the same time.

I always think that parents grow together with our children instead of us just raising them. I find that I have grown up so much mentally as a parent, compared to all the years I spent in studying and working. I believe there is no job in this world can that can substitute spending time with my children, growing up day by day, therefore I have never regretted giving up my career when I started motherhood. Now that my youngest child has started school, it is time that I return to the workforce. Raised in an expatriate family, my three children lived in a few countries during their childhood. I enjoyed bringing my children for outings to the zoo and night safari, parks and swimming. At home, I enjoyed reading and telling stories to them before bedtime and teaching them to speak Thai. It was such a great opportunity to immerse my kids into the new culture in every new country they lived in, through music, arts, dance and sport. I remember my daughter was a finalist in a children’s ballet competition in Shanghai when she was nine years old.

These are all the fantastic memories for the children and me.

My three children have redirected me to discover much more about myself.

While I had to discontinue my advertising business in Singapore after our move, I had come to realise that there was more meaningful work out there beyond my career. My eldest boy, who had challenges in learning in mainstream school, brought me a new career as a child development coordinator for Friends of Hope Shanghai. It might be a loss leaving behind my previous advertising and design career, but I gained so much from the importance of community services which brought me to volunteering with Chung Wah when we migrated to Perth.

Shirley has two grandchildren who attend the Chung Wah Chinese school every weekend. In addition to visiting her grandchildren at the Chinese school, she also likes to participate in the school’s Tai Chi exercise sessions, as it is good for her wellness. Her other weekly pastimes are cooking and line dancing.

材料 Ingredients

素粽子 Vegetarian Glutinous Rice Dumplings (Zongzi)

• 1公斤糯米（浸泡三小时以上） • 50片粽叶（浸透，煮软） • 200克眉豆（浸泡六小时， 加一茶匙盐，煮软） • 棉绳

• 1kg glutinous rice (wash, soak in water for at least 3 hours)

• 50 bamboo leaves (wash, soak in water and cook until soft)

• 200gm black-eyed peas (wash, soak in water for 6 hours, add 1tbsp salt in boiling water to cook until soft) • Cotton string

馅料 Fillings

• 200克绿豆片（浸泡六小时，煮软） • 50克冬菇 （每朵切条，煮软） • 24粒栗子 （煮软）

• 200克素G肉（切粒）

• 200克素叉烧 （切粒）

• 200g mung beans(soak for 6 hours, cook until soft) • 50g shiitake mushrooms (soak in water until soft and cut into strips) • 24 chestnuts (cook until soft)

• 200g vegetarian meat (cut into pieces) • 200g vegetarian roast meat (cut into pieces)

1. Heat the oil, add all the seasonings until fragrant.

2. Add the softened black-eyed peas, and stir evenly.

3. Place in a bowl and set aside.

Mix the seasonings into the softened mung beans, mix evenly, place in a big bowl and set aside.

香菇拌入调味料腌片刻，然后以一大匙油爆香，加入素G粒及素叉 烧炒香加入 ½ 碗水，两茶匙素蚝油焖至水干，备用。 1. Marinate the shitake mushroom strips.

2. Heat oil and saute the shiitake mushrooms until fragrant.

3. Add the vegetarian meat and vegetarian roast meat.

4. Add ½ bowl of water and 2 tsp vegetarian oyster sauce, saute until dry.

5. Place in a bowl and set aside.

1. You will need two leaves per dumpling and some cotton string to tie it up. Fold the leaves into a cone shape (refer photos). Place 1 tablespoon of rice in there and then a chestnut and a teaspoon of cooked fillings and mung beans. Add another tablespoon of rice, making sure it is nice and compact before wrapping it into a triangular prism shape. Fold over the bottom two leaves and wrap up. Tie with cotton thread.

2. Place the dumplings in a large pot and fill with enough water to cover them. Bring to boil. Simmer over medium heat for about 2 hours. Top up with boiling water if the level goes down. Avoid adding cold water.

How to Raise Bilingual Children in Western Australia?

R

aising bilingual children is a big commitment that requires some careful planning and consistent effort. The myths for raising bilingual children are now clearly debunked by recent research evidence. Research shows that learning and using more than one language strengthens our problem solving and analytical skills, and promotes creativity, cognitive flexibility and logical reasoning. Bilingualism also allows children to communicate with members of extended families. This helps to build stronger family relationships and cultural bonds.

We also know that raising children in a bilingual environment would NOT confuse the child nor delay their language development in either language. In fact, it actually helps them to learn the second language, English, more easily and perform better at school if they have a solid foundation of their native language. Young children are good at understanding the difference between languages and know that they need to switch and speak Mandarin to grandma and English to the teacher.

Here are some tips and tricks that may help to raise bilingual children and keep our native language (with Mandarin in mind): Decide on your model: you may consider adopting either a “one parent, one language model” or “minority language pattern model” and stick to it consistently.

The first model has one parent speaking Mandarin consistently while another parent speaks English rather than swapping between languages. This allows the child to grow up being able to speak both languages fluently with a broad vocabulary. The latter model means both parents speak the same native language, Mandarin, at home with their children. Children hear, speak and use Mandarin a lot at home. Children then learn English with their friends and teachers at school or in the community.

Make it interesting: children learn best when they are genuinely interested.

Read and tell stories in Mandarin. Do pretend-play and dress-ups in Mandarin.

Be creative! Music, songs and dance are another great way of introducing Mandarin to children. They remember

the words better with melody. How about games in Mandarin? You may do I-spy or bingo in Mandarin. Some libraries may also have CDs, DVDs, picture books and magazines in Mandarin. Tap into their interests (e.g. sports, cooking, music) and incorporate Mandarin into daily routines. For example, you may listen to radio programs in Mandarin at home or cook their favourite dish together using a Mandarin recipe.

Create lots of opportunities and exposure: children need opportunities to practise and see others using the language.

Look for playgroups, schools, child care centres, bilingual programs or community centres (e.g. churches, temples) that support your child’s use of Mandarin. Child care centres may employ bilingual workers to support your children’s native language. You may also organise play dates with other children who speak Mandarin. It helps to create a ‘reason’ and a ‘need’ for them to speak Mandarin. If you don’t use it, you will lose it. So, it’s important to create different opportunities for your children to hear and speak Mandarin.

Attend cultural activities that you and your family can do together to celebrate cultural diversity and identity.

The WA Chung Wah Association organises various Chinese New Year events and other cultural events that celebrate Chinese culture and heritage. Across Australia, many events are organised to celebrate Harmony Day in March every year. Giving your children the opportunity to understand and appreciate cultural heritage also helps them to feel proud of their culture and celebrate the fact that they can speak two languages.

Encouragement and support: as children go to school and start speaking English more often, they may refuse to speak Mandarin.

Be patient and help your children to resist peer pressure of solely speaking English.

Explain the benefits of bilingualism to your children. Continue to have fun and engage in one-on-one conversations or activities with your children. Give positive praise when they are speaking good sentences, “I’m so proud of you for speaking Mandarin. It means that when we visit grandma, you get to speak to her!” “The more we practise, our Mandarin and English will be equally as fluent!”

Consistency: stick to the choice that you’ve made to raise bilingual children and keep it consistent.

Sometimes it may feel like your child does not want to speak Mandarin. Do not give up. Talk to other parents and find support for yourself. Keep conversing in Mandarin in complete sentences as this means that they can continue to hear and understand the language. Keep it as a positive experience instead of punishing or scolding them for speaking English.

Otherwise, being bilingual would be an aversive experience for them. Prioritise maintaining a secure and healthy parent-child relationship using emotioncoaching strategies instead of forcing children to speak Mandarin. A resilient and confident child is more likely to resist peer pressure. This will provide a solid foundation for children to willingly learn both languages in a happy environment.

I believe the biggest issue in education for Chinese parents in a Western country is learning the Chinese language. Basically, families with either parent from a Chinese background wishes that their children can speak the Chinese language or even a Chinese dialect. But how do we make bilingual education work?

I make this conclusion based on my personal experience of raising two bilingual daughters. Firstly, create a strong Chinese educational environment at home, pick a few meaningful and educational Chinese cartoons for the children to watch. This is for them to learn basic conversation through a leisure activity. Secondly, commit to speaking Chinese at home. In general, children may prefer to speak English as they grow up in Australia it is easier for them. In fact, this is a crucial moment for retaining the Chinese language. Thirdly, actively involve your children in the Chinese school learning program and activities.

A structured systematic learning program can form a good foundation for learning a language. Also, participation in school activities can give them more opportunities to use the language.

Overall, I think making learning the language interesting and creating a strong Chinese environment to support the learning process make a huge difference. In addition, continuously encouraging and supporting them in writing, reading and listening to the language.

居住在西方国家的中国父母面对最大 的教育问题恐怕是中文教学了，基本在国外 有一方说中文的家庭都希望小孩能说中文， 甚至自己家乡的方言。那如何进行双语教育 呢？

我以自己教育两个双语的女儿，总结了 几点： 第一，在家坚持中文教育或营造中 文环境，可以选几套有意义的中文动画，让 小朋友从兴趣中学到一些基本口语；第二， 坚持中文对话， 在家里说中文，在学校说 英文，随着年龄增加，小朋友相对更喜欢英 文，因为比较简单， 这时就要多鼓励小朋 友坚持说中文，不要放弃；第三，参加中文 学校学习和活动，系统的学习可以打下良好 的语言基础，多参加不同活动可以提高中文 的使用程度。 总之，学习语言还是要以兴趣为主，环 境为辅，鼓励和支持小朋友多说，多写，多 读，多听！

I have three children.

I purposely exposed them to both Chinese and English languages from when they were very young.

We speak both languages to each other daily. I use interesting songs, stories and vocabulary learning games to nurture my children in bilingual learning. We feel proud being able to continue learning Chinese in Perth through the Chinese school here. Although the children start using English more often, as parents, we will try to instil to them the importance of knowing both Chinese and English.

In addition, encourage them to learn other languages to prepare for the era of globalisation. 我有三个孩子。从小就开始 给 他们接 触 中英双语。平时以两语沟通。透过有趣的歌 曲，故事和认字游戏的教育方式来培养孩子 们对学习双语的兴趣。孩子们来到珀斯还 能继续到中文学校学习中文是一件值得骄 傲的事情。虽然两语之间，他们开始常用英 语了，身为家长的我还会坚持孩子们学好两 语。此外还会继续鼓励孩子学习更多的语言 以预备全球化的时代。

I came from Malaysia.

My daughter, Alison, was turning one year old when we migrated to Western Australia. Not long after our arrival, we regularly sent her to a child care centre . Since then, English has become her first language and gradually she spoke only English. I discovered that she totally could not understand Mandarin when she was in Year One. I started sending her to Chinese school every Saturday when she turned nine years old. Unfortunately, she had no interest at all and always found excuses to escape from the Chinese lessons.

After one year, we found she had no improvement in the language. I was determined to only speak Mandarin to her at home, explaining to her that whenever she couldn’t understand my conversation, I would guide her to reply to me in Mandarin. No doubt, there were numerous unhappy moments during this process, but we are happy that we had gone through it. We started to watch Chinese drama, talked about Chinese culture and travelled to China a few times. I didn’t respond to her whenever she spoke to me in English. For four years, I hired a Chinese language home tutor to teach her on a one-on-one basis, from Year One level onwards. Now, Alison is doing her Year Seven Chinese lesson, and she communicates with me in Mandarin at home everyday. I feel so grateful to see her being able to speak Mandarin fluently in daily conversation. In conclusion, it is never too late to learn a language. It is most important to havedetermination to achieve it effectively.

我来自马来西亚。移民来西澳大利亚 时，我女儿宋传恩才一岁。不久后就把她送 到幼儿园照顾，自此我女儿就开始以英语沟 通，不知不觉我女儿在家就开始完全说英语 了。传恩一年级时候, 我发现她完全听不懂 中文了。直到她九岁我才开始每周六送她到 中文学校学习华语,可是她完全不感兴趣， 总是找各种理由缺课。过了一年, 传恩的华 语学习完全没有进展。我决定完全在家用 中文与她对话，她听不懂就解释给她，慢慢 帮助她用中文回答我。虽然这当中发生了不 少不愉快的情况，但我们还是坚持下来了。 我们开始一起观看中文古装电影，聊中国 文化，一起去中国旅行。每次她用英语回应 我时，就坚持不回答，直到她试着用中文作 答。后来，我也专门找来一位家教每周一对 一辅导中文从小学一年级的课程开始，学了 四年进展不错。现在传恩已经学习到七年级 的中文课，每天在家都与我以中文对话。看 到女儿能用华语畅所欲言，深深觉得这六年 的痛苦总算没有白费。虽然孩子学习中文比 较晚，可是只要下定决心还是可以成效的。

I always feel fortunate to be able to learn many languages as a Malaysian Chinese, especially the Chinese language. Therefore, I am hoping that my three-year-old daughter can learn Chinese language in Australia.

We speak Mandarin with her at home and learn Chinese with her together at the Chung Wah Leeming Chinese School every Saturday. During our work days, we send her to a child care centre, learning English. At this stage, we find that our child has picked up both languages quite well; hopefully this will allow her to gain more knowledge.

According to Monash University, type 2 diabetes affects up to 80 per cent of Chinese Australians over the age of 60.

iabetes – and more specifically type 2 diabetes – is often referred to as the “epidemic of the 21st century”. With one in 11 adults around the world now living with this condition, the title is more than justified.

In Australia, one person is diagnosed with diabetes every five minutes.

Experts estimate there are 1.7 million Australians living with diabetes.

Understanding the condition is especially important for people with Asian ancestry. Studies have shown that people from these backgrounds are at a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, when compared to those from white European backgrounds.

Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body becomes unable to break down the glucose found in food and convert it into energy, because it either no longer produces insulin or cannot use insulin properly.

Type 1 diabetes – often called juvenile diabetes – is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks the cells that produce insulin. No one knows what

Understanding diabetes and its seriousness is important – leaving diabetes undiagnosed or unmanaged for too long can lead to serious health complications including blindness, foot amputations and kidney failure. But the good news is that people can minimise their risk of these outcomes by making simple lifestyle changes, including exercise and healthy eating.

What is my risk?

Experts are still debating why people with Asian ancestry are at higher risk, but what they all agree on is that people with Asian ancestry are more likely to develop this condition at a younger age and at a lower weight.

Having an Asian ancestry is just one of a number of risk factors that can contribute to type 2 diabetes.

Some risk factors – such as your age and having a family history of diabetes – cannot be changed. Other risk factors, such as being overweight, smoking and having a poor diet, can be changed.

Knowing your risk is the first step in preventing or delaying a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. To calculate your risk, visit https://diabeteswa.com.au/prevention/ or ask a health professional to help you complete the Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool. If you score highly, you should follow up with your doctor.

Could I have already have it?

People with type 1 diabetes rely on daily insulin injections to remain alive.

It is very unlikely you could have type 1 diabetes and not know it.

Type 2 diabetes typically develops over a long period. In the early stages of the condition there are often no obvious symptoms. As type 2 diabetes is commonly (but not always) diagnosed at a later age, sometimes the signs are dismissed as part of “getting older”.

In some cases the condition is not diagnosed until the person develops a complication, such as a foot ulcer.

It is for this reason one of the themes for this year’s National Diabetes Week, coming up in July, will be around early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Some symptoms to watch for include: • • • • • •

being excessively thirsty going to the toilet more often feeling tired always feeling hungry having cuts that heal slowly blurred vision

What should I do?

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is the most powerful way to prevent type 2 diabetes.

This involves:

• maintaining a healthy weight • eating a healthy diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables • limiting the amount of fats and sugars you eat • cutting back on the amount of alcohol you drink • being physically active (half an hour of moderate exercise, five days a week) • quitting smoking.

If you have already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, these same steps – along with monitoring blood glucose levels, taking any prescribed medications and having regular health checks – will help you to live well with this condition and minimise the risk of serious complications.

Diabetes WA works with the Chung Wah Association to present general information sessions on diabetes in Chinese. We also run a range of education courses that cover more specific topics such as meal planning, foot care, living with diabetes and using diabetes technology.

The Chung Wah Magazine is a bilingual quarterly publication of the Chung Wah Association. Founded in 1909,the Chung Wah Association is the largest and most established Chinese organization in Western Australia. We are proud that members of the community and local service providers are increasingly learning about CAC and its offerings through this fun and unique service model.

Promoting independence and wellness, the Evergreen College offers different classes and excursions to satisfy clients’ needs, introduces them to new skills and helps them strive to achieve their goals. Currently, we host classes in physical exercise, cooking, tai chi, English and computer, at the Balcatta and Willetton hubs. For those who don’t attend our centres regularly or clients who only receive in-home support, we also want to bring Evergreen College right to your home, which is one of our working goals in 2018.

Our classes are flexibly tailored and provide choices to meet the needs of the participants. Speaking of this, it’s hard to ignore one of the highlights of this program - exercise class. This session is conducted each morning and led by CAC support workers, and it is the most popular activity among our clients and the most essential unit to keep our clients active and improve their wellbeing. Our famous “chicken dance”, where everyone moves their body to the beat of the music, and holds each other’s hand towards the end of the song with hearty laughter.

The purpose of the exercise class, or in that sense, the whole idea of Evergreen College, is to encourage clients’

physical, social and mental wellness, and to meet their full capacity. Wellness comes from our motivation and desire to achieve our life goals, and from doing what makes us feel proud about ourselves.

We believe the Minister for Aged Care – the Honorable Ken Wyatt AM, MP, shared the same feeling during his visit to the Balcatta hub on 14 March 2018. Our clients felt his kindness and were happy to talk with him, though they might not even know who he was. After the old folks gathered together and started the exercise, the minister watched them following the instructions with interest, and finally decided to join them. He held

clients’hands and did the chicken dance together with them. As we can tell, he really enjoyed the music and interacted with clients in a perfect and dynamic way.

“长青学院”项目已经推行了好几年了，如今，已经俨然成为了中华社区与长者服 务最有趣最吸引人的服务项目之一。我们觉得非常骄傲，很多的社区朋友和当地 的养老服务机构也开始通过这个有趣特别的服务模式逐渐认识和了解CAC以及 我们提供的各类服务。 为了提高长者们的自理能力和身心健 康， “长青学院”提供了一系列为了满足客人 们服务需求而设立的兴趣班和远足活动，帮 助他们学习新技能和完成生活中的目标。我 们现在在南北两个活动中心都设有晨练、烹 饪班、太极班、英文班和电脑班。对于不经 常参加中华中心活动的社区朋友，亦或是只 有家居服务的客人来说，我们2018年的工作 目标就是把“长青学院”的服务带回您家。

这些兴趣班为了满足参与者的需要， 并为他们提供更多的选择，因此授课时间 和内容十分灵活。说到这里，就不得不提到 这个项目中的一大亮点 – 晨练。这是每天早 上客人们的必修课，全部环节由CAC的照顾 人员带领。它是客人中最受欢迎的项目，而 且作为能帮助客人保持活力和健康的方式， 这是必须的一个环节。我们最出名的“鸡仔 舞”，可以让每个人都跟随着音乐的节奏舞 动身体，他们每次都互相手拉手一直跳到结 束，欢笑声不断。

晨练，甚至是整个“长青学院”成立之 初的目的是为了鼓励长者保持身心健康。说 到身心健康，它与我们希望做什么，做事情 的动机，达成目标的愿望和做什么能让我们 觉得自豪有关。 相 信 对于 这 种 感觉，3月14日参观了 CAC北部中心的专门负责养老服务的Ken Wyatt部长最感同身受。我们客人虽然不识 眼前人，但是却感受到了来自部长的友善， 并十分乐意与其交流。在长者们聚集在一 起快乐地做运动之后，部长带着强烈的兴 趣观察着老人们的动作，并决定亲身加入。 他与我们的老人家手拉手，并一起 跳了鸡 仔舞。如我们所见，他非常喜欢鸡仔舞的旋 律，并且将舞蹈和与老人们的互动完美结合 在了一起。

绪琼中医师。1983年毕业 于5年制中国安徽中医药大 学，从事中医临床已有35年工作 经验。擅于治疗各种慢性疾病和 专门研究中医养生保健和抗衰老 疗法，曾多次在社会团体主讲中医 养生讲座，现已在西澳华语广播 电台主讲“宝林堂健康之音”栏目 达十年之久。

中医养生精华特点

我从事中医临床35 年，来寻求中医治疗 的大部分都是慢性疾病，尤其以哮喘，月经 不调，不孕为多见，疗效都比较好。大部分来 看中医的都是在多年西药治疗不见明显疗效 的情况下来看中医。还有些人是对中医知识 不太了解，抱着试试看的态度来就诊。其实 中医是一门很精深的经验医学宝库，治病求 本，未病养生，因人而异的治疗原则，是独特 有效的。当然也需要患者有耐心坚持配合完 成一个疗程，而不是看一两次就停止了。 一、中医养生理论体系以阴阳平衡为基础。

通俗来说，中医养生的核心要点是要 补充不足的，清除多余的，保持人体的阴阳 平衡。即“虚则补之，实则泻之，热则寒之， 寒则热之”等等，过多过少都不好。这是中 医最基本的传统养生原则。 二、中医养生以“辨证施治”为原则

即针对每一个人的体质、年龄、性别、 家族史等的个体差异，会用不同的方药、食 疗等方法。也就是说不同的人用不同的方药 和食材，不能一视同仁都用一种方子来煲汤 养生。别人服用好，对自己不一定就好，甚 至有害。中医讲究因人而异，比如：人参大 补，但有些人一吃就头痛、腹胀、甚至出鼻 血等症状。 三、中医以“不治已病治未病”为重要的养生 原则 意 思 是 不 要 等 到 病 已 经 成 了再去 治 病，应在未病之前，就要养生保健，使自己 不得病或少得病。有病早治，无病健身，延 年益寿，是目前中医养生潮流。 四、中医养生注重因时因地制宜

因时因地意思是中医养生保健重视季 节、地区、气候等环境不同而制定适宜的方 法，比如冬天进补，春天养阳等。 五、中医以经络养生为优先，确保生命运输通 道畅通。

“是药三分毒”，养生不等于吃补药。 疏通经络，按压穴位，保证人体生命线的畅 通，才能使血气流通，才能营养器官和清除 体内的废物。

r. Julia Fu is a practitioner in traditional Chinese medicine. She graduated from the Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China in 1983, and has 35 years of experience. She is an expert in treating various chronic diseases and in traditional Chinese medicine methods on anti-ageing and improving general health. Dr. Fu has given talks on traditional Chinese medicine at many community events and she has been the announcer of the“Baolin Tang voice of health”program on Mandarin radio in Western Australia for ten years.

Traditional Chinese medicine methods on improving general health In the 35 years that I have been practising traditional Chinese medicine, most of the patients I have seen came to me for treatment of chronic diseases: particularly asthma; irregular periods and difficulty in conceiving, for which traditional Chinese medicine treatments are relatively effective. Most of the patients decided to try a traditional Chinese medicine approach after years of western medication and treatment did not give them any obvious improvement. Some other patients actually did not know much about traditional Chinese medicine and decided to give it a try.

Traditional Chinese medicine is actually an advanced school of medicine based on experience. We target the root cause of diseases and encourage improvement in general health for those who are not sick. This principle of tailoring the treatment to each patient is unique and effective.

1. The traditional Chinese medicine health improvement paradigm is based on the balance of “yin” and “yang”.

Core to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine health improvement is to supplement what the body lacks and get rid of what the body doesn’t need, and maintain the balance of “yin” and “yang” in the body.

2. Health improvement is based on assessment before treatment.

This means targeting the differences between each patient’s physical condition, age, sex and family history and using different methods, such as herbal medicine and food-based treatment. In other words, using different prescriptions and food for different patients.

3. The important principle: “not treating the sick but treating the not yet sick”.

This means do not wait until you develop an illness, you should start to focus on improving your health, so that you can avoid getting sick or at least get sick less requently.

4. Emphasises timing and location suitability.

This means that traditional Chinese medicine focuses on environmental factors, such as the season, geography and climate, in order to formulate suitable approaches or treatments. For example, dietary supplementation in winter and stimulating the growth of the “yang” energy in spring.

5. Prioritises health improvement through circulation, to ensure smooth circulation of “life transportation lines”.

“All medications have a certain level of toxicity”, so improving health is not only about taking supplements. Clearing your blood vessels, applying pressure to appropriate pressure points and ensuring smooth circulation of “life transportation lines” in the body are essential for the circulation of blood and “qi” (energy) so that our organs can get the nutrients they need and detoxify waste from our body.

orn in Malaysia and educated in Malaysia and Taiwan, Dad was very much an embodiment of the Confucian virtues – benevolence, righteousness, courteousness, scholarship, integrity, loyalty, and filial piety. In his practice, our father built a close-knit family.

Dad was caring and soft-spoken gentleman – often over-anxious for the welfare of his children, while also stern when we were little, guiding us unerringly towards the right path. In his professional life in Australia, Dad has helped countless others as a medical interpreter to the sick and needy. As one of the forefathers of medical interpreters for the Asian community in Perth, my dad was quite a well-recognised face here.

Over the years, Dad has cultivated many friendships, with his kindness, loyalty, generosity and sincerity. Bringing up a young family in a new and unfamiliar environment was not easy, but he was reassured that these sacrifices had come to fruition when we saw how proud Dad was at our respective graduations, cheering us on with each new task we took on as adults, beaming with happiness at our weddings, turning recently to his transformation as a doting grandfather.

Dad’ s finest quality was his integrity, his punctuality, and unassuming vast grasp and knowledge of the Chinese language as a poet. He also voluntarily wrote enlightening and thoughtful articles for the local Chinese papers, offering his wisdom to guide others.

We remember him as a kind, loving, diligent, thoughtful, patient and intelligent father, who spared no efforts in caring for his family all through his life. Our father’ s legacy are the ideals instilled in us – being kind to others, live a righteous life, and contribute to the welfare of the society – ideals that we will continue to take forward in his memory.

To our dad, Yit Chang Lee, we will remember you forever. A loving father, husband, scholar and true gentleman.

To the world, my dad may be just one person, but to one family, he was the world.

He loves my mum and they really epitomised the notion of a lifelong partnership.

A fittingly heartfelt tribute from my mum to my dad:

“With 45 years and 9 months together, both of us have now become one. Your caring and thoughtfulness transcend

beyond words. I wish for us to continue this romance in our next life.”

父亲的善良、真诚、慷慨与诚恳，在澳 洲的这些年也交了许多朋友。在一个陌生的 环境养家糊口确实是很艰难的事。父母亲的 牺牲换来我们今天的成就。从我们的毕业 典礼，到结婚迈入人生重要旅程，到升级成 为爷爷，父亲脸上所流露出骄傲和满足的目 光都证实了这一切都是值得的。 父亲最让人钦佩的地方是他的真诚、守 时和博学。他的談吐、书写、思想和言行，就 如古代诗人。父亲喜欢写作。闲暇的他最喜 欢写写文章，分享他的感想和体验，然后通 过当地的中文报章表达。 父亲所有的优点，例如他善良的心, 人 生的智慧, 對家人体贴的关怀, 對我们细心 的照顾, 耐心的教悔, 我们心中永记。他用他 这一生奉献于他的家人，而我们作为儿女是 会永记父亲的教导－对人友善，为人正直， 舍己为人。他为人的原则和教训，与我们一 起的美好时光都会永远留在我们的心里。

he 2018 Perth Chinese New Year Fair came to Northbridge on Sunday 18 February and Purslowe & Chipper Funerals was proud to support the occasion through its affiliation with the Chung Wah Association.

Cultural performances including the Lion Dance dazzled throughout the day. This year we celebrate “Year Of The Dog” and Purslowe & Chipper Funerals were pleased to be part of the 2018 Perth Chinese New Year Fair and to continue to support families throughout Perth.

The Lion Dance may be one of the most well-known events during the Lunar New Year, seen as bringing good luck and prosperity to the community. Chung Wah’s Lion Dance Troupe has a rich history dating back to the 1960’s and performing at International Competition and being ranked fifth best troupe in the world. Stephen Kum is the Chairperson of the dance group and grew up with a passion for the performance.

The team will be now be looking forward to recognising the Ching Ming Festival which falls in the third lunar month of the Chinese calendar, which is usually in the first week of April in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is very ancient, dating back in Chinese history around 2,500 years. The Ching Ming Festival,

or Qingming, is a special day for the remembrance of ancestors.

Dragon Boat Festival 端午佳节

An Incredible Man –Qu Yuan

No different from other races and nationalities, the Chinese people have numerous festivals of their own to celebrate throughout the year.

It is well understood that the Chinese have continued to follow their own traditional lunar system to mark the dates and festivals. The three major and most significant occasions such as ‘Spring Festival’, ‘Mid-Autumn Festival’ and the Winter Solstice, ‘Dongzhi’ are undoubtedly very much family orientated. Habitually, the Chinese spare no effort, energy and expense to return to their families for the festivities.

One festival, however, is celebrated, by far, in a different way. It involves big masses of people, communities, guilds and associations, even religious devotees and an entire region. This grand occasion is to honour and to remember the patriotism, the integrity and the sacrifice of one early individual, statesman, diplomat, strategist and a much loved, popular poet, in ancient China. 犹如各国家的民族，每一年华人都会庆 祝好几个传统节日。华人依据农历的日 子来庆祝传统节日，其中包括三个以家 庭为主导的重要节日，分别为春节、中 秋节和冬至。一般上，每逢佳节华人都 会不计劳苦地回家与家人团聚过节。 相比这华人传统佳节，有一个节日无论 是欢庆方式或意义上却截然不同。这个 日子是为了纪念一个中国古代人物的爱 国情操，他不仅是当代的政治家、外交 高手，也是一位受人爱戴的诗人。

u Yuan lived in the state of Chu (in present Hubei Province, China) during the Warring States Period (475 221 BC). During this time, the area known as Central China was occupied by seven states or small kingdoms of Qi, Chu, Yan, Han, Zhao, Wei and Qin, who were rivalling for control and supremacy.

Early in life, Qu Yuan was already a member of the ruling house of Chu. He had a brilliant career, was made a minister of the court of Chu and an envoy to a neighbouring state Qi. He was once trusted by King Huai of Chu. When the state Qin invaded the other six states, Qu Yuan advocated forming a pact with state Qi to resist Qin. His early success evidently caused jealousy and envy of his fellow officials, who made wrong accusations to slander him. As a result, King Huai dismissed and exiled him. As the affairs of state Chu gradually headed downhill, King Huai recalled Qu Yuan to assist him in governing.

In the ensuing years, the King of Qin offered King Huai some 600-li of land to lure him, pretending that the two states could live peacefully together. This infuriated the state Qi. Against Qu Yuan’s advice, King Huai eventually visited the state Qin. He was detained for many years and died there. King Huai was succeeded by his son, who ignored Qu Yuan’s advice not to yield to Qin. Qu Yuan was exiled again to a place further away than before.

Saddened, disappointed and lonely, he used the days of his exile to travel widely, teaching and writing his ideas. Qu Yuan wrote many famous immortal poems – on his love for his country and its people – and the longest lyrics of romanticism regarding politics in the history of ancient Chinese literature.

old man over sixty. He realised that his hope to serve his land and to find a new worthy ruler had come to an end. Once he sighed to an old fisherman: “the world is muddled, yet I am clean; all people intoxicated, only I am sober – this is the reason I had been exiled.” On another occasion, he simply said, “to live with the corrupt and the scum, I’d rather be perished in the guts of fish”.

On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, 279 BC, on the bank of Miluo River (in present Hunan Province), he noticed a solitary wild goose hovering above, quickly disappearing into the distance.

In complete despair and loneliness, he picked up a boulder, and with it, he jumped into the river.

Every year thereafter, the villagers and those who had heard of him returned to Miluo River to commemorate his life.

Over time, the event has since developed into an enthusiastic boat race. This was the beginning of the grand festival called “Duan Wu Jie”, often referred to as ‘double fifths’, or simply ‘Dragon Boat Festival’ to many westerners.

On hearing this, the people in the vicinity rushed out in their small boats in search of him. At the same time, they splashed the water with their short paddles, some clanging gongs and others beating drums, in an effort to scare the fish away from him. 屈原也因此被罢免官位，流放到江南，此后 长期居于流放地。

少的伟大诗篇，来诠释 他对国家和人民的 爱，倾吐自己的历史、远大的政治理想，其 中包括编写有史以来中国古代历史最长的 爱国诗篇。

怀 抱石头，遂 投 江以 身殉国，当天 正 是农 历五月初五。

附近的百姓听闻此噩耗，纷 纷 划船搜 索，打捞屈原的尸体，大家敲锣打鼓地盼能 驱赶鱼虾， 并把竹叶包着糯米的饭团投进 江中，但愿将鱼虾喂饱，免得牠们咬食屈原 的尸体。自此以后，村民和听说过屈原的人 们每年都会来到汨罗江纪念他。久而久之， 端午节划龙舟的习俗就这样流传了下来，这 个节日也被称为重午节，外国人一般简称它 为龙舟节。

Dragon Boat Festival 端午佳节

今年的农历五月初五，会是在阳历6月18日，大家一起度过这历史悠长的端午节。

This year’s Duan Wu festival falls on 18th June, lets celebrate this meaningful festival together.

D

uan Wu Jie has its special foods.

Glutinous rice is preferred. One typical type is stuffed with savoury fatty pork meat, or chicken meat with beans, chestnuts and salted duck egg yolk, all wrapped in bamboo leaves or banana leaves before being thoroughly cooked.

This is commonly called ‘zongzi’ in Mandarin. In China, each region or area has its own version of ingredients. These days, zongzi is available throughout the year. In Perth, in the Northbridge area, zongzi is also readily available in some of the Asian grocery shops.

These days, Duan Wu Jie is celebrated throughout China. Outside China, countries like Burma, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam are among the earliest to follow in earnest.

Unfortunately, and rather sadly, the present generation of people look at the festival as an organised carnival of feasts, of zongzi and of boat racing in regional and international contests, with little reference to its origin of more than 2,200 years and to the amazing poet Qu Yuan.

On 5 March 1953, China held a grand commemorative event in honour of Qu Yuan as a great poet. Little do we know, the same year, the World Peace Council held a special meeting to honour him, and called people to learn from him.

Qu Yuan was also listed as one of the four literary celebrities of the world – an accomplishment of no equals. His poems are already translated into many languages.

1953年3月5日，中国曾经举办过一个大 型的纪念活动来悼念屈原。估计不会有太多 人知道在同一年，世界和平协会也曾经在一 个特别会议上高度赞赏屈原，并鼓励人们向 他学习。此外，屈原也被列为世界四大文学 高人之一，他的诗篇已被翻译成多种语言。

or three decades, Chung Wah Chinese School, with campuses located across Leeming, Morley and Rossmoyne, has continuously delivered Chinese language and cultural education. Besides Mandarin lessons, students may also enrol in a wide range of cultural based after-class curricular activities on Saturday. We will start to introduce them in this column.

Guzheng Lesson

(Chung Wah Leeming Chinese School)

The guzheng group lesson is one of the extra-curricular activities taught at Chung Wah Leeming Chinese School since 2007 with Teresa Tan as the instructor. Teresa Tan has been the instructor all along. The lessons are held on Saturdays 11:30am to 12:30pm at Leeming Senior High School, Aulberry Parade, Leeming. Due to the limited time for individual attention in a group setting, it is preferable that students are nine years old and older.

There are at least two or more guzheng performances, solos and ensembles every year. We have performed popular pieces, like “Dance of the Yeo Tribe”, “Liu Yang River”, “Fighting of the Typhoon”, “Rainbow Cloud Chasing the Moon”, “Happy Days and Fishermen’s Song at Eventide”, etc. Students always try very hard to perform at their best.

GuZheng

Guzheng has a history of 2,500 years.

It is a plucked pentatonic zither with movable bridges and is one of the most popular Chinese instruments.

Its music is simple and elegant. The most well-known sound is the sound of water created by glissandos. The most commonly used guzheng has 21 strings that are made of steel wound with nylon.

The body, about 1.6m long, is made

of wood. Artificial nails are used while playing in order to enhance the tone and expression skills. Guzheng originated in Shaanxi and has spread across China and around the world. There are different styles of presentation as it has developed through the years. Two-hand skills are widely used to increase its musical presentation.

中华会馆黎明中文学校古筝课

2007年初，中华会馆黎明中文学校的 课外学习项目，增添了中国古典乐器-古筝。 自此至今的指导老师一直都是王慧兰老师 (Teresa Tan)。 上课时间在星期六早上十一点半至下 午十二点半，地点在 Leeming Senior High School，Aulberry Parade, Leeming。由于 是集体课时间有限，古筝老师要求学生最好 是九岁以上的儿童及青少年，以确保班内的 学生可以在短短的每周一小时的课堂中学 习弹奏古筝。

每年古筝组都会参加两场或以上的表 演，独奏和合奏都很受欢迎。曾经表演的曲 目有多首著名的古筝曲： “瑶族舞曲”、 “浏 阳河”、 “战台风”、 “纺织忙”、 “彩云追月” 、 “欢乐的日子”、 “渔舟唱晚”等等。学生们 每年都努力地练习，以最好的表现去演绎这 些曲子。

Born in Hong Kong, Teresa Tan grew up playing the Chinese guzheng (zither) and piano. She settled in Perth, Australia as a registered pharmacist and became involved in the promotion of Chinese music and Cantonese opera through performances and tutoring. Aside from the Guzheng and piano, Teresa also plays the Zhongruan (lute), Yangqin (dulcimer) and Erhu (Chinese violin) and sings. She is a Guzheng instructor at Chung Wah Leeming Chinese School and Methodist Ladies College. She is also the Acting Music Director of Chung Wah Chinese Orchestra. Some of her notable performances include the 2017 Cantonese Opera Concert in Brisbane, the United Nation’s 70th anniversary celebrations, the Kulcha’s 30th anniversary celebrations and the 25th Oz Concert held in Perth. She also participates in some local community

2018 Chinese New Year Dinner and Dance – Celebrating the Year of the Dog

n Saturday, 3rd March 2018, Chung Wah completed the Chinese New Year celebrations of the Year of the Dog with a dinner and dance at the Chung Wah Cultural Centre in Balcatta.

Over 320 members and friends joined in the celebrations, and having fun tossing Yee Sang, a traditional Chinese New Year dish, all at the same time while wishing for good health and prosperity for the Year of the Dog. President DING Shao Ping welcomed our VIP guests, members and friends and wished each and every one a Happy Chinese New Year. There were cultural performances from Chung Wah Dragon and Lion Dance, as well as from Chung Wah Dance, to entertain our guests. Line Dancing, New Vogue and Social Dancing music, giving each dance activity group dancers a chance to show case their particular dancing skills.

n the morning of 17 March 2018, the Chung Wah Association Women’s Subcommittee held a special Women’s Day activity. The subcommittee Chairperson, Ms. Jiping Zou and the Vice-Chairperson, Dr. Julia Fu, welcomed everybody.

The event was well attended by about 80 people. The Deputy Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Perth, Ms. Qian Jin, and Chung Wah Association’s President, Mr. Shaoping Ding, gave their festive greetings to the ladies in attendance. The Chung Wah

s part of the Chinese New Year celebrations, Chung Wah Morley Chinese School organised some cultural activities

throughout the Chinese New Year period. We invited the WA Chung Wah Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe to perform a lion

dance on the second day of Chinese New Year. On the ninth day of Chinese New Year, we organised a dumpling making

session to get students involved in Chinese New Year customs and culture. On this special occasion, students were given a chance to make and eat homemade dumplings.

n 24 February 2018, the ninth day of the Chinese New Year, Chung Wah Rossmoyne Chinese School welcomed a long-anticipated performance by the Chung Wah Lion and Dragon Dance Troupe. About 400 teachers and students were in the audience, some parents also brought pre-school aged children to the school to enjoy the occasion with their elder siblings.

Lion dance is a classic Chinese New Year folk performing art. The Rossmoyne Chinese School invited the lions to perform at the school during Chinese New Year to give Australian raised children an opportunity to experience Chinese culture first hand. Last year was the first time this activity was organised and it has been very well received by both students and their parents.

Chinese New Year Celebrations at Chung Wah Leeming Chinese School

黎明中文学校舞狮歌舞迎新春 O

适逢中国狗年春节之际，黎明中华中 文学校又迎来了崭新的一年。戊戌年正月初 九，迎着晨起的朝阳，各班级小朋友在老师 的带领下，整齐划一，齐聚一堂。伴随着欢 快明朗的节律，一声锣鼓震天响，舞狮团瞬 间映入了眼帘。几只生龙活虎的狮子踩着鼓 点，摇首摆尾，各种动作生灵活现，孩子们在 锣鼓声中异常兴奋，也跟着手舞足蹈起来。 接着，在教务主任黄宝玉的带领下，六年级 加表演班的全体同学为大家合唱了一曲《恭 喜恭喜》，下面的小观众们伴随着音乐，一起 哼起了这首歌，场上场下一片祥和之气。

n 24 February 2018, the ninth day of the Chinese New Year, Chung Wah Leeming Chinese School celebrated the Chinese New Year festival with a series of cultural performances. All students gathered early in the morning at the assembly, waiting for the arrival of the Chung Wah Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe. At approximately 9:30am, four lions entered, accompanied by joyous drums and cymbals. The children excitedly followed the lions’ every move. This was followed by a group of Year Six students and the Performing Arts group who presented a Chinese New Year song, “Gong Xi Gong Xi”. Many other students also sang along with the group. It was a festive assembly day that was full of joy and happiness.
