Message from Camp Director
Thailand Youth Choral Camp started in 2016 with the purpose of building a choral community among young people through a week-long (now eight-day) camp spent rehearsing a program for a culminating concert. While fostering friendships among the campers through musical and social activities, we also work toward choral excellence by providing them with the best choral experience we can under the direction of Dr. T. J. Harper, our one and only guest conductor since the start. Seeing the campers come together from being complete strangers for some on the first day into a close group of friends is more than rewarding to us.
This year, our campers come from Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, Rangsit University, Srinakharinwirot University, Kasetsart University, Horwang School, and Triamudom Suksa Pattanakarn School. Seeing the campers come together, many of them meeting for the first time, and grow into a close group of friends is more than rewarding to us.
This year, we also added a string orchestra track to the camp, and the students will be performing together with the choir in tonight’s culminating concert. We are also fortunate to have five assistant conductors working with both the choir and string orchestra. As promising conductors of the younger generation, they have done an outstanding job throughout the camp. However, the excitement surrounding this 9th camp does not stop there. Tonight, we are also proud to premiere a new composition, There Will Be Soft Rains, by our choir member Nutthanan Yongpruksa, a composition major from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of the camp. Thank you for believing in these young choristers and for supporting choral music at Chula.
Until next time,
Dr. Pawasut Jodi Piriyapongrat
